"He he, like, why is that guy on television?" "Uh, cos he's famous." "Yeha, but like, what's he famous for?" "Uh, cos he's on television"

Geoff, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Commentary on Accept's "Balls to the Wall" - "Hey, someone tell that fat roadie to get off the stage!"

tarden, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(while watching Blur's Parklife video) These guys are from that place... what place...? You know, that place. Uuuhhh... England. (slight pause) England sucks!

Oh, how wrong they got it all. They really loved the worst JAMC video ever made.

masonic boom, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Edie Brickell's "What I Am" - "Isn't this that chick who married Paul McCartney, then moved to Africa?"

tarden, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry - it was "...married that guy who used to be in the Beatles, then moved to Africa"!

tarden, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Got any more nutmeg?"

Or the one where Beavis was saying "Stay in school! Obey your parents!" backwards.

Phil, Tuesday, 12 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The one where they're watching Rollins Band's "Liar" and they keep talking about what a nice guy he seems to be and how he's got a nice smile. That and the episode where they throw all the food up into the fans at the fast food joint.

God I miss that show...

"I dunno, that's an awful lot of money" - Beavis

RickyT, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Watching Elastica video:

"Why do chicks always look at their hands when they're playing guitar?"

"They're looking at their boobs. If I was a chick I'd be looking at my boobs all day."

Samantha, Monday, 1 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
(Whilst watching some video with a load of faces morphing into each other)

Beavis: Hey, it's REM! No, err, Aerosmith? Christian Slater? Some dude, huh, your mom.... WOAH CHECK IT OUT! IT'S CAPTAIN PICARD!

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the frappuccino episode was the best ever, but there were many good times... doing the ass-slap dance and humping the couch (to 'nothin but a g thang'??)

one of my friends just had me on the floor with his beavis impersonation: 'c'mon butthead, give it a chance! you never give it a chance!!' hmm... i guess you had to be there.

the second best show ever on mtv (to austin stories) even though that may not be saying much

Ron, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Huh, yeah, it's like the only reason to even go to school."

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 18 November 2002 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"Goodbye to glue?"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 18 November 2002 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"huh huh, the only reason this video has naked chicks in is because the song sucks so hard" (or words to that effect) - Some shonky Beloved vid.

i caught the end of an old ep on mtv the other week, and it's still funny (or at least if one hasn't seen it for like 4 or 5 years)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 18 November 2002 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(in mock british accent)

butthead: i believe i will go spanky my monkey

beavis: yeh, bloody well right!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 18 November 2002 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The scene where they go shopping for porno mags after getting paid by the sperm bank, and then walk off into the sunset with huge piles of said mags.

tigerclawskank, Monday, 18 November 2002 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Beavis calling 911.

Operator: - ...have you heimliched the victim?

Beavis: - Have I licked his rectum?!?!

koogs, Monday, 18 November 2002 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Let me get this straight...you want a tattoo of a butt with a tattoo of a butt on it tattooed on your butt."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 November 2002 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The one where they're talking about the "special defects" in a video.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 18 November 2002 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The episode where they get "drunk" on non-alcoholic beer and end up almost arrested. And the Spanish Fly episode.

As far as music video commentary: the Helium video ("that chick's weird) and King Missile's "Detachable Penis" (where they don't even talk, just stare in disbelief).

mike a (mike a), Monday, 18 November 2002 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
KUYLER

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 4 April 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The one where they cut off their hair with scissors and glue it to their face, thinking that it will give them instant beards and attract chicks.

Beavis: "Damn I'm smooth."

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 4 April 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

watching a whale video: "the dude with the best nads gets his armpit licked"

g--ff (gcannon), Sunday, 4 April 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

beavis: [freakout about idea of manage a 4]
butthead: "if i were in bed with four chicks, i'd put my face in all the buttcheeks and go bp-pb-pb-pb"

g--ff (gcannon), Sunday, 4 April 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Fast food customer: Are your milkshakes made with real milk or that artificial milk substitute?
Butthead: Uhuhuh....Uhhh...Yes?
FFC: What do you mean yes, yes they're made with real milk or yes they're made with the artificial stuff?
B: Uhuhuh....Uhhh...Yes?

Sengai, Sunday, 4 April 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Watching a Nine Inch Nails video:
"Where do you get those shiny pants?"
"Uh... I think you just, like, take regular pants and shine them."

Also, the episode where Bill Clinton visits their high school and says he is happier than a pig in slop to be there.

And every appearance of Daria ever, of course. Where can I get tapes of this show with the actual music videos still included? Any of those circulating by chance?

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 4 April 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean, you have to make 500 drawings just to get 2 drawings?

ModJ (ModJ), Sunday, 4 April 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm so glad they're showing them again :-)

ron (ron), Sunday, 4 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as music video commentary: the Helium video ("that chick's weird) and King Missile's "Detachable Penis" (where they don't even talk, just stare in disbelief).

And Johnny Cash, "Delia's Gone": "Is this gangsta rap?"

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 4 April 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Do the current MTV reruns have the music videos?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 4 April 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit. The funniest episode EVER is the one where Beavis thinks he's pregnant. It turns out he just really has to take a dump. I almost peed the last time I saw it.

Some lines I still use:
"I can HANDLE it."
"Take one of the captain."

NA (Nick A.), Sunday, 4 April 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to go w/the nosebleed episode. Haven't caught any episodes again on MTV though, when are they sowing them?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 4 April 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the one where they wanted to be a band. "Hey remember when we were a band?" "You mean today?"

Aja (aja), Sunday, 4 April 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

they are on mtv2 and i'm not sure exactly when. but yeah, they have the videos and everything

ron (ron), Sunday, 4 April 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Is this, like, Todd Rund-gur-ren?"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 4 April 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

B&B singing along to Devo's 'Whip It'.

Barima (Barima), Sunday, 4 April 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Watching James Hetfield of Metallica:

"Check it out, he looks like the cowardly Lion"

And he fuckin' does! He does!

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ice Ice Baby:" They look at each other once, then twice, then change the channel without saying a word.

Prude (Prude), Monday, 5 April 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Yeah Beavis, stop "screwing" with him"

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 5 April 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry if these arent 100% right on, it's been a long while.

confusing "Sold my Fortune" for "Sold my Futon"

"check it out. I give to the poor" butthead, stuffing photocopied coins into a charity box at the store, trying to impress the cashier girl.

"chicks have crotches? well I'll be damned", B&B watching pj harvey dance on the back on a truck.

AaronK (AaronK), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

When Beavis thought that Tori Amos was Dave Mustaine and started singing along like Dave, I've got a BOWLING BALL in my STOMACH / I got a DESSERT, in my MOUTH...

Mr. Anderson: "I'd like a hamburger, a milkshake, and a small fry."
Butthead: "What?"
Mr. Anderson: "I didn't order 'what'!"

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"are you gonna die soon?"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(in the audience for some david koresh-type, who's reciting dialogue from the ten commandments):

beavis: he's good!
butthead: he's God!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Beavis and Butthead are on MTV2 right now.

ModJ (ModJ), Saturday, 10 April 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

When Todd's biker-chick girlfriend makes them steal stuff from the quickie mart and she slides a can of beer down the front of Butthead's shorts and he deadpans, "I love you."

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Saturday, 10 April 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"i am getting so sick of like smart-ass videos where there's like a bunch of college guys and they're standing in water and being all smart-ass"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 10 April 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, is that "Rattled by the Rush"? That's great. "Those guys are lazy."

daria g (daria g), Sunday, 11 April 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

haha no, it's some awful looking 1995 alterna-band. they get bored and turn off the tv and flip out. the rattled by the rush one is great too though.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 11 April 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That was the video they actually turned off, wasn't it? But then of course they didn't know what to say to one another. "So, uh... You get any lately?"

Prude (Prude), Sunday, 11 April 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"what did you do today?" "i've been sitting here all day with you"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 11 April 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't it a Pizzicato 5 video? -

Butthead: He looks like the idiot in 'My Three Sons' who's always saying 'Hey! Uncle Charlie!'

Beavis: My three sons of bitches!

Printed words don't do this proper justice, but it really was one of the funniest things I ever heard.

Also, the episode when they went to shop class and Beavis slices off his finger on the table saw.

Kjoerup, Sunday, 11 April 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike Judge is a genius. I mean that wholeheartedly. He captured something so perfectly with B&B. Whenever I watch that show I'm in awe of his perceptive/translative skills.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 11 April 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like, the 'Todd' thing is so perfect; the way these total losers act so supercilious towards EVERYTHING they encounter. Except whenever they encounter Todd, a guy painted even more dense and unfeeling than they are, they are in complete awe. I mean, they would do anything to get Todd's approval. Their complete fecklessness with females, the homoerotic "subtext", their disdain for all manner of garbage would-be "alternative" music. It's beautiful.

I like the one where they put motor oil in the deep fat fryer at the fast food restaurant they work at. Also when they are forced by the hippie teacher dude (!) to join the self-help group and they get all the recovering alcoholics to bag it and go buy them beer.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 11 April 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Daria may have been even better. It was absolutely fantastic.

I think one of the funniest lines on Daria was when they were going paintballing and one of the dorky kids asks the Vietnam veteran type teacher "will we be running a buddy system on the trip"

And he just seeths and his eye bulges and goes, "I HAD A BUDDY ONCE, THEN I GOT HOOOOOOOOOME, AND HE'D MARRIED. MY. MOOOOOOOTHER!"

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 11 April 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan, I am very disappointed in you.

Ricardo (RickyT), Sunday, 11 April 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I better than this?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 11 April 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. Preferring Daria to Beavis and Butthead is, well, a little infra dig dear.

Ricardo (RickyT), Sunday, 11 April 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Whenever I watch that show I'm in awe of his perceptive/translative skills.

OTM. When I was in high school and the show first started, I hated it, because I was like, "What the fuck, it's just like hanging out with the guys in the smoking section, so what?" After I'd graduated and caught it again in reruns, I said, "Holy shit, it's just like hanging out with the guys in the smoking section, that's genius."

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 11 April 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

did judge do daria?

i love king of the hill. not as funny as b&b but it has its great momentx.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Sunday, 11 April 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Judge did not do Daria.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 11 April 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"These effects aren't very special." Something else I say on probably a weekly basis.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 12 April 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone else have friends whose whole sense of humor, nay, their whole personality, is based on acting like Butthead, which probably started as a joke, but they couldn't stop talking like that and it eventually took over their life, or is it just me?

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 12 April 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I would have if Kevin Smith hadn't cockblocked Butthead.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 12 April 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Fortunately (I guess), the friend I'm thinking of missed that boat. No, wait, that's definately a "Fortunately."

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 12 April 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a fine, fine line, though.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 12 April 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
Does anyone else have friends whose whole sense of humor, nay, their whole personality, is based on acting like Butthead, which probably started as a joke, but they couldn't stop talking like that and it eventually took over their life, or is it just me?

i knew a guy from high school who has practically a dead-ringer for beavis -- both looks-wise AND personality-wise.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

Indeed, the Europeans.

An all too exhaustive fan page.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

The things you learn! The fate of the lead singer:

Fergus Harper has been elusive since the Europeans split back in 1985.
He is no longer involved in the music business, and now flies long-haul all over the world as a steward with British Airways

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

the europeans = a bunch of brits that look like howard jones or martin gore should not have tried to sound like oingo boingo.

the christmas episode was great

Beavis: Where's their kids?
Buzzcut (Ghost of Christmas Future): Beavis, don't you get it? They never had enough food to eat, thanks to you.

The time Beavis and Butthead were on Step by Step as blind dates is one of the only things for that (Step by Step) show I (even bothered to) remember.

Otherwise, That one time Beavis injured his head and ranted about the vileness of corporate rock was pretty OTM, no?

The threat of castration, represented by Woman's lack, is essential to subject formation, and Beavis is clearly outside of this system. Not only does his reflection tell him Bjork has a "schlong," but when he and Butthead watch another video, which features a (supposedly) nude woman in a bathtub, Butthead expresses the hope that the woman will stand up, revealing her body to them. Beavis thinks that she will not, speculating that "she's embarrassed because she has a stiffie." Butthead attempts to explain that women cannot get erections, but the existence of humans without penises is unimaginable to Beavis.

Beavis: [gasp!] [gasp!] I think that the problem with this video is it is highly derivative of many popular bands within the genre. Although when viewed on its own merits, it does have a deeper groove. However what it has in groove it lacks in originality. One can't help but be reminded of such bands as Pearl Jam, White Zombie, Suicidal Tendancies and other bands that bear the mantle of so called "Alternative Rock". One is even reminded of Laurie Anderson when she wore curlers. Hehehmhm! This video speaks less to the heart and more to the sphincter. In closing, I think Korn would do well to learn more from -

(Butt-Head slaps him silly)

Beavis: Ahhhh!! Heh! Oww! Heh! Whoa! What happened?

Butt-Head: You got all dizzy and started talking like a dumbass.

I fall asleep watching one of the King Turd B&B DVDs (which, if you don't know, Google it now) more often than not. I've gained such an appreciation for the sublime beauty of this show of late (which I failed to properly appreciate in high school as a result of being surrounded and thoroughly unamused by Beavis & Butthead analogues). It's very pure in its display of abject stupidity and as dead-on a satire as Office Space and Idiocracy, albeit more unjustly dismissed.

Given that context, the tone of this first episode felt (kinda unsurprisingly) a bit off to me. Beavis & Butthead were a little too...mellow, maybe? And I get the sinking feeling that MTV might've twisted Mike Judge's arm to include excessive references to their shows. But it still hit the spot, and I look forward to seeing more.

You may be right. Perhaps that is the gift of hindsight, when I watch a B&B from the 90s there's enough distance. In another 10 years, "Jersey Shore" may be a distant kitschy memory and feel the same as the no-name videos they riffed on back in the day.

loving the new episodes, but I was thinking - the contemporary equivalents of Beavis and Butthead (nihilistic, directionless suburban idiots) would more likely be trolling around 4chan's /b/ now than watching Mtv, but it would be hard to make a show about that obviously

but I mean, /b/ is the new incarnation of the Beavismind - destructive, perverse, backwards, totally suburban. Odd Future too.

the board even centers around Beavis and Butthead's two prime motivations - sex/masturbation and "lulz" (laughter at others' expense). 'lulz' is the new 'huh huh huh'.

Chris S, Monday, 14 November 2011 01:51 (thirteen years ago)

Seriously, has no one else noticed that nearly every one of the new eps features at least one joke about Beavis getting molested or anally raped? It's kind of weird.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 14 November 2011 03:15 (thirteen years ago)

i was sadly bored by the 2 new episodes from the other night. many of the jokes don't seem as effortless as they once did... but my hopes are up for the future.

also they haven't said that any videos suck yet.

billstevejim, Monday, 14 November 2011 04:39 (thirteen years ago)

Apparently I am alone in this, but I just do not get this show at all, never did, dunno whats funny about it. Daria I like, this, I find as unfunny as... well, as dorky 14 year old spotty boy humour.

youre probably not alone Trayce; I would bet Lex probably feels the same way as you

there's something about the orig episodes of B&B that just define the 90s for me: the way it mercilessly sends up American society from the vantage point of River's Edge-type teen-nihilism

Butthead looks accurate, Beavis is a couple decades too old. These are 14 year olds.

I interviewed Judge eons ago:

That's a great breakdown of the Korn video.

MJ: Yeah. I had this idea that he would, when he blows on his thumb, channel a rock critic for a while. I had David Felton in the studio at the time. He still works for MTV, but used to be a Rolling Stone writer, so that stuff just comes out of him like it was nothing. I said, just gimme some rock critic stuff, and he started feeding me lines. I messed it up and made it Beavis-like.

B&B had relatively good taste.

MJ: Originally, in the very beginning, when the show was starting, I thought, well, if B&B like something, maybe that’s an insult to the band. Then I decided, even though they’re really stupid, that they have primal good taste. I didn’t really set out to be a rock critic, but that part of it was actually pretty fun.

Uh, huh huh. Oh yeah. Plus. Ugh, math is stupid.

Yeah. Math sucks. I hate math. Like, "If one butt is traveling east, and another butt is traveling west, how many butts do we have?"

Uh, I don't know about you, Beavis, but I only have one butt.

Yeah, heh heh. Well I have two butts.

Huh huh, you have two butts? That's cool.

Yeah, heh heh. It *is* cool. Like, when one butt is doing something, the other butt can be doing something else. It's, like, multitasking.

Well why don't you multitask us some nachos, Beavis?

Yeah, Or maybe I'll just sit here and send my other butt to get it.
