I had a blackened shrimp Caesar salad, crappy office coffee, a diet coke, and some chocolate covered espresso beans.
Dinner is yet to come.

LONDON (Reuters) - A leading British brain surgeon has been suspended from work following a dispute over a bowl of soup.
Dr Terence Hope was sent home from the Queen's Medical Center in Nottingham, where newspapers say there is a 39-day waiting list for brain operations, after being accused of taking extra croutons without paying, hospital sources said on Monday.
"A consultant was suspended following allegations surrounding his personal conduct," the hospital said in a statement. "He was due to operate today on three patients. Their surgery has had to be postponed."
Hope, 57, who has been working as a neurosurgeon in Nottingham for 18 years, is an expert in traumatic brain injuries. Efforts to contact him not immediately successful.

It seems like a lot of us are having little epiphanies about our eating habits as a result of posting to this thread -- I think that's good, but is it weird that I had this thread in mind (and wanting to feel good about my post on it) when I packed a lunch this morning? Yes. Yes, that's really weird, I think.

My menu outlook for the day:
Oatmeal w/raisins and cream, some water, arugula and carrot salad w/red wine vinaigrette, some leftover mashed potatoes, salad + pizza slice for dinner. And a good, say, 20 oz or more of wine. The red sort, to go with the pizza.

Dinner: The beef poor boy from Bill Miller's, with a side of fries. Liquid refreshment -- iced tea.
I've been drinking glass after glass of orange juice since I've been home. Went to get groceries today and satisfied my urge for orange juice by getting a huge carton of it. (I would make a snide comment about oranges and Billy Bob Thornton because he's here in town at the moment, but seeing as though he's being really nice to the locals I'll pass.)

Turkey, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes (with actual, real butter), (Wal-Mart brand canned) corn, yams (made with Splenda and walnuts), cranberry salad, rolls. And a half a slice of tres leches cake, which is all I could choke down because I really don't like that (waaaay too rich). Washed down with a diet root beer and a bottle of water.
And some little candy mints, a handful of pecans, and another bottle of water.
And I don't think there's enough room in my entire body for anything else. But I was good in that I didn't add any butter or margarine or gravy to my meal. Uh, "good".

Orbit, your meal day thus far sounds GREAT!
What I've had for eats thus far -- a bowl of cereal and a banana, for breakfast. I'm going to be sitting down now to a bottle of Diet Cherry Coke and a package of salted peanuts. I know already what I'll be having for dinner, i.e. a bowl of homemade caldo de res and some corn tortillas. And that'll be my meal day.

1 slice of wholegrain toast and a cup of tea for breakfast
Coffee mid morning, 1 litre of water between breakfast and lunch
Huge salad of iceberg lettuce, watercress, cucumber chunks, cherry tomatoes and black olives for lunch
Cup of tea about 3pm-ish, another litre of water during the afternoon
Snack-attack : 1 banana, 1 clementine
Supper : salmon fillet marinaded in light soy sauce, freshly-squeezed lime juice, a little clear runny honey and a sprinkling of red pepper flakes, then pan fried and served with steamed broccoli. Dessert was some strawberries, but they're imported ones at this time of year and they're hard, crunchy and fairly tasteless. Bad move getting those.
Today so far : tea and toast for breakfast, a cup of coffee during the morning. I am so hungry! Ravenously so, which is not like me at all. I will munch a banana and drink some water to take the edge off this, as it's not even midday yet and far too early for lunch!

haha, on the rare occassion I communicated with a parent it was usually when they would come up to the school in their pajamas, slippers -- braless -- to berate me for being "racist" because I wrote their kid up. Most of my parents had no clue what their kids did in school nor did they care. Man, I need to find a exorcist to rid me of my teaching memories.
dinner last night was pizza as expected. But it was pretty late for us as I think he was holding out to see if I would give in and cook. So I had quite a few sugar cookies to hold me off. num.

* chopped dark chocolate* candied orange and lemon peel soaked in ... um bourbon? Aimee may remember, I gave her some and might have written it down for her. I resisted the idea of using tequila. Ahhh, it might have been rum. But really, either way works.* a little candied habanero and the syrup from it. This would be optional, I don't expect people to have candied habanero handy.* plenty of cocoa powder to taste* pecans* cinnamon, vanilla, a little allspice, and ground chile (I used tabasco pepper -- not Tabasco sauce!)
You have to taste it as you go, realizing that it'll be a little less spicy in its final form than the batter is, but that the chile heat will build with every bite -- so you want it to taste a little more cinnamony and a little less chile-y than you're aiming for.
Okay, where's that base recipe. Here we go, it's this: http://redfusion.livejournal.com/35605.html minus all the ingredients after and including white chocolate.

Well, it is a mystery to all. I gave the packages to my mother to mail because she was sending Lindsey a quilt, and they may have lingered long enough for excess rum/bourbon to soak through the label.
The white one's the Amaretti one -- amaretti cookies, hazelnuts, anise seeds, citron and orange ... cherry brandy and rum, I think? Man, I just make these up as I go, every year.
This year though, I'm gonna candy all kinds of fruit, maybe do a Campari-grapefruit fruitcake, etc., do my thing.

by far the best thai food i've ever had. its kinda funny - they have a regular dumbed-down thai menu like the usual chicken satay, spring roll, pad thai, curries, etc, but they have this 7-page menu only in Thai script just for Thai people and I guess also for people on the internet.

okay, so pretzel bread is kind of crunchy on the outside and doughy yet 'thick'/dense on the inside? it would be nice if it was like a montreal bagel with a hard crust. damn straight.

What is this? If they sing about goose fat, I want to hear it! I have so many wide-mouth ball jars of rendered fat in my fridge (and jellied stocks): lard, goose fat, duck fat. We went out looking for a goose today because I'm about out of goose fat! (found one, but the wrapper was torn - also, no price, in giant asian supermarket) Also, I'm down to 1/2 a jar of lard, so next weekend it's time to render again.
btw, that Beauzeaux (bo-zos) wine is not bad, but has some bottle sniff (maybe from the tempranillo, maybe from the shiraz) right off the mark, so needs to sit around for 20 min or so before you stick your nose in it.

I didn't bother with any lunch cos I wasn't really hungry. I've made some chicken puttenesca for supper tonight, to have with tagliatelle and a green salad. Home made mango ice cream for pud.

The beauty of carrot cake is how good it can be, and how dessert-appropriate, WITHOUT being super-sweet, so when they super-sweet-ify it (or do so in the form of a cupcake/muffin), it's just ... dumb.
See also coffeecake, barbecue sauce. "Slightly sweet" can be great if only it'd be given a chance more often.

Our food editors were split down the middle as to whether this cake was better when made with extra-virgin or regular olive oil. Using extra-virgin results in a fruitier, more pronounced olive-oil flavor, while regular olive oil yields a lighter taste. Both are delicious — you won't be disappointed with either result.
click photo to enlarge 3/4 cup olive oil (extra-virgin if desired), plus additional for greasing pan1 large lemon1 cup cake flour (not self-rising)5 large eggs, separated, reserving 1 white for another use3/4 cup plus 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
Special equipment: a 9-inch (24-cm) springform pan; parchment paper
Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 350°F. Grease springform pan with some oil, then line bottom with a round of parchment paper. Oil parchment.
Finely grate enough lemon zest to measure 1 1/2 teaspoons and whisk together with flour. Halve lemon, then squeeze and reserve 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice.
Beat together yolks and 1/2 cup sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer at high speed until thick and pale, about 3 minutes. Reduce speed to medium and add olive oil (3/4 cup) and reserved lemon juice, beating until just combined (mixture may appear separated). Using a wooden spoon, stir in flour mixture (do not beat) until just combined.
Beat egg whites (from 4 eggs) with 1/2 teaspoon salt in another large bowl with cleaned beaters at medium-high speed until foamy, then add 1/4 cup sugar a little at a time, beating, and continue to beat until egg whites just hold soft peaks, about 3 minutes.
Gently fold one third of whites into yolk mixture to lighten, then fold in remaining whites gently but thoroughly.
Transfer batter to springform pan and gently rap against work surface once or twice to release any air bubbles. Sprinkle top evenly with remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar. Bake until puffed and golden and a wooden pick or skewer inserted in center of cake comes out clean, about 45 minutes. Cool cake in pan on a rack 10 minutes, then run a thin knife around edge of pan and remove side of pan. Cool cake to room temperature, about 1 1/4 hours. Remove bottom of pan and peel off parchment, then transfer cake to a serving plate.

L: Hoegaarden draft, Scotch egg, 3 "mini lamb burgers" (disappointingly tiny but actually turned out to be the right amount of food because of the egg) with Old Bay mayo and housemade ketchup that was surprisingly heavy on the allspice but still the best housemade ketchup I've had. Vanilla kreme donut from Dunkin Donuts. Coffee regular (is "regular" = "a little cream, a little sugar" a Dunkin Donuts thing, a northeast thing, or an everywhere thing that I just hadn't heard of until this year?)
D: Haven't needed it yet, man! I got a Moxie right now.

L: Leftover piece of pizza (Fantasy pie -- sun dried tomatoes, basil, spinach and cheese), yogurt and a banana.
D: The most delicious meal ever: Kotapita (filo dough with some delightful Greek cheese, and chicken inside) with rice and green beans. Also had a cup of this fantastic lemon / egg white soup.

there is no nutritional difference according to what i've read. although, i am hooked on sparkling mineral water which has trace nutrients in it & a tiny pinch of calcium.
i'm assuming you drink either the plain stuff or something with a flavor but w/o sugar?

― humansuit, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)
ms. misery, you're totally good. it's like drinking still water.
one drink i love to make is with gerolsteiner (my fav sparkling water) + a splash of pure cranberry juice (no add ins, sugars, etc. just the bitter straight stuff) + a squeezed wedge of lime. it is so so delicious. if i want something a tad sweeter, sometimes i'll throw in a splash of grapefruit juice.
― sweet tater, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)
That sounds like the non-alcoholic drink I'll get at bars! Although obv their cranberry juice is the sweet kind. Bastards.
― Ms Misery, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)
I must say that after drinking that & converting to unsweetened/plain yogurts, I am kind of over having the sweets in my food foods. I do love me some desserts, so I can't say with any sliver of honesty that i'm totally over sweets.

Stole some crisps from my husband. As well as some coke and dr pepper
Plus a squeeze of lime juice plus some chopped fresh basil on top! I know, it was rly good! I've taken to using the grater side of my grater (as opposed to the side that makes little worms) for the onions & ginger, cos that way the consistency of both is better.

I've lost 30 pounds in a little over 2 months doing Atkins.. and I've gone off the diet twice (more than a couple days both times). Both times I thought I would be able to handle a minimum amount of alcohol but then after a few beers I said "what the hell, why not". Maybe I will have some good before and after pictures once I'm done with Atkins. When I hit 190 (another 15 pounds to go) maybe I'll take a picture.

^^Actual brownies have a Pollock-style chocolate spray over the cream cheese batter layer, this is an example of the marble approach.
I tortured an entire office of fashion people with a pan of them; editor was making O faces. Once he'd explained he wasn't eating cake this month, only to jam it into his mouth. To be fair, though, I cut them up into 'fashion-sized' pieces so everyone would get some.
LOVE Tunnock's teacakes (and the wafers are droolsome) but they don't have tiny chewy bits of vanilla pod in them.

Skirt steak salad for lunch! With lots of veg toppings incl raw broccoli, cos someone said "cruciferous vegetables" the other day and it reminded me I had broc in the fridge.
And half of a bag of Pepperoni Pizza Combos that I bought in a starving moment last weekend.

No breakfast.
It's restaurant week so I went out with co-worker to local Cambodian/french place and had fresh veg spring rolls followed by grilled vegetables and tofu in a ginger curry sauce. We split some sort of mango mousse thing for dessert that had fresh pineapple. AMAZING.
