With all the glasto hoo-hah i nearly forgot that i sorted this out yesterday as well.

It's The Chapel Bar, 29a Penton Street, Islington, again, it's still free and don't forget the happy (three) hours.

As you may guess from the title, this night is a companion to popular, so it'll be ALL UK number ones, ALL THE TIME.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ouchie, we land back from Honeymoon at 8.30 that morning and have work the next day.....

Yeah, I'll be there

chris (chris), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a fella on POPMASTER this morning who used to OWN every number one.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah there's a picture of such a man in the last Guinness Book Of Hit Singles. It made me think several times about my life path I can tell you.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I STILL own every number one and it's done me no harm at all!

If I can come to this I will make a point of requesting the Temperance Seven and Typically Tropical ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 2 April 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not playing Typically Tropical! Unless I get Typically Drunk.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 2 April 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well what about any one of Frank Ifield's FOUR number ones then?

(I am REALLY looking forward to your analysis of these)

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 2 April 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

At some point (probably a whole week) before this happens I am going to listen to all 50 or so CDs of #1s to pick out possible playlists and make sure all the tunes work. Frank Ifield will be 'given his due' then, I am sure at the end of all that I will be an impressionable wreck and will happily OK any Tom Dick or Boyzone.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

carsmile i am mailing you

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

OH GOD NOT BOYZONE!!!!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 2 April 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Westlife, then.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Goombay Dance Band must replace Andrew WK as final track

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I promise to dance and have fun this time as well

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It's OK stevem, shurely AWk has not had #1 record? Therefore CANNOT be played hurrah!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter, then.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Joe Dolce

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaddap you face.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess this means that The Archies will finally get an airing?

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

potential buzz-boosting final tune mentalism likely to feature a certain Dexy and his midnight runners then I reckon....or Bo Rap! fookin ell, sixth form flashbacks already...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess this means that The Archies will finally get an airing?

pitch it down a notch, turn the treble right up and it'll sound just like that Mary Chain version in your mind Kate :)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Pitch it up a notch and run it through a distortion pedal and it will sound just like the new Busted version in my mind...

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The first hour should be all pre-1964 tunes, and you should invite lots of OLD PEOPLE

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

bring yer parents!

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh me oh my. That's be classic. Can you imagine an ILX Folks Fap? I have never met any ILxor's folks, but the mind truly boggles.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

can we all have our birthday number one tune played?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Finally, it's Club Dad.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Club dud

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

You're telling me.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

No club that has a half-decent chance of playing 'Yes Sir I Can Boogie' could ever be called Club dud.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

and it can't be Club Dad either cos Eric Clapton's never had a #1 single.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

can we all have our birthday number one tune played?

this would mean 'Rivers Of Babylon' i'm afraid

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Seasons in the sun...

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You're lucky. Mine is Bridge Over Troubled Water. Boney M is SOOO much better than Simon & Garfunkle. :-(

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

'Wherever I Lay My Heart (That's My Home)'. So, no, don't.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Heart of Glass!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

God, that's scary. I remember dancing around to Heart of Glass in the back of a pick-up truck. With future trustafarians and shaggy dogs.

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Honky Tonk Women

http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/cont/choose.html

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine is Cum On Feel The Noize.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine is bastard Summer Loving from Grease.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Grease fever blessed my birth with You're The One That I Want... I cannot do midweek jollies but this sounds like fun, hope it goes well!

Archel (Archel), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, I forgot we are cursed Grease sisters.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

fuckin' a, mine's Uptown Top Ranking!

sgs (sgs), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Waaaaah I want a cool birthday tune!

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, at least you're not stuck with Paul ruddy Young.

And it could be worse - it could have been off the soundtrack to Grease 2...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I Will Survive.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

optimistic given the ruin prospects for next week deary

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Tighten Up (in America)

What a coincidence, my all-time favourite record.

I will try to come to this early doors as a dry-run for going to Club Carsmile early doors.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Lonely this Christmas

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My birthday #1s:
UK: Tears Of A Clown by Smokey Robinson And The Miracles.
US: War by Edwin Starr

I win.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno Rob, I reckon my songs might dance yours off the floor. My US no. 1? Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees.

sgs (sgs), Friday, 2 April 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Band of Gold by Freda Payne. Pretty good.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 2 April 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

we already have old people turning up at these events! Have you noticed me there? My birthday UK number one was A Fool Such As I by Elvis, and in America The Battle Of New Orleans by Johnny Horton. Let's not play either of them.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 April 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you the first reader to get their birth #1 actually written up in Popular Martin? Wow!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I would be, wouldn't I?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 3 April 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My birthday number one was Long Haired Lover from Liverpool. This is as good a reason as any for me not to come down for this (this is within a few days of the carsmileparty, isn't it?), though I'm pretty sure it's Cabbage's too so you'd have to play it anyway.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 3 April 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Message in a Bottle (UK)
Sharona (US)

Ed (dali), Saturday, 3 April 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes Ailsa, our US number 1 is equally shite I'm afraid, but I can't remember what it is off the top of my head

not Vicky, Chris (Vicky), Sunday, 4 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Rat Trap. I'm sorry I will almost certainly not be there. I do need an excuse to come down this summer though.

Ally C (Ally C), Sunday, 4 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I have spent all day making the CDs for this.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 4 April 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The Club Popular songlist fits neatly on 50 CDs with a bit of spare capacity for whoever gets the next few too. God the 90s were arse though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ET TU TICO?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

We have had this argument before Steve - 90s number ones = worst thing ever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

They start well and there's a patchy rally in the late 90s but otherwise K-BLIMEY. I'm playing back the CDs now to check they work and the number of nasty surprises is high, speaking of which here's Stiltskin.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

People should feel free to make requests from Matt's list though!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

the 90s will be no worse than the 00s for #1s

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Jamiroquai Deeper Underground

How on earth did that go to number 1????

On the other hand 814 Armand Van Helden featuring Duane Haeden You Don't Know Me 6/2/1999

: )

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The 00s have so far swung erratically between eye-watering brilliance and eye-bleeding toss, whereas for chunks of the 90s mediocre was generally as good as it got.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Well the 90s didn't have Michelle McManus I suppose.

Tom you totally have to play Come On You Reds in preparation for the FA Cup Final - that's one of the best football songs ever. But if anyone suggests The Stonk or Timmy Mallett I will come and slap you.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm putting a serious request in for Because We Want To.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i count only a handful of decent #1s from 2000 and 2001 for starters, but it's all down to personal onions

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

If you play come on the reds there will be hell to pay

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, Saviours Day was knocked off the top by Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter. Excellent work.

I would so dance to Billie. My serious request would be for Mmmbop.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i would request 'Turtle Power' as I can still recite a large chunk of the rap off by heart, but nobody wants to see me do that

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

If the sound goes wrong we know who to come to Stevem.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously the best number one of the 90s was "Back for Good" by Take That.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Also the 00s have already given us Independent Woman, Crazy In Love, Lose Yourself, Freak Like Me, All The Things She Said, Stan, Survivor, Crashed The Wedding and Toxic. This beats the whole of the 90s already.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

what on earth was I doing in May of 97? I have NO MEMORY WHATSOEVER of the Gary Barlow song, or Olive. Who or what was Olive???? The Eternal song with Bebe Winans was great tho - best thing Eternal ever did.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

You should just play them in decreasing order of singles bought. Get Candle In The Wind over with before the club fills, and that's presumably it for the 90s.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

A lot of it is taste (well, all of it is taste really) - the iconic 'great No.1s' of the 90s just don't really do it for me, I prefer other stuff in the same vein usually, whereas the 00s equivs have pressed all my buttons nicely.

Olive's song was a kind of spooky soulful dance thing, sort of a Billie Ray Martin feel to it.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

On the one hand I don't think the 00s have had a Dunblane, or a Robson & Jerome-like plague upon the top spot. On the other hand I don't think they've had an Outhere Brothers yet.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Olive's song is one of my favourites on there

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

On the other hand I don't think they've had an Outhere Brothers yet.

FATMAN SCOOP!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah the death of the serious charity record has helped the 00s quite a lot.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

that Oakenfold mix of Olive gets incredibly and wonderfully euphoric about 5 minutes in

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

FATMAN SCOOP!

Point.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

as Tico already hinted, the beginning of 1990 is one of the all time great stretches of #1s - 7 wonders in a row (tho 'tears on my pillow' is the possible weakling)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweet Like Chocolate was a good song, one of my favourites on there. Someone needs to play the White Town record as well to stick up for Interweb music geeks.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

we could ask jyoti to come and do it live for us!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a brilliant segue:

Whitney Houston I Will Always Love You 5/12/1992
2 Unlimited No Limit 13/2/1993
Shaggy Oh Carolina 20/3/1993

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

um...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I assume Liz means in a Song Connection way. Also blimey, No Limit for a month?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

heh, more title segue hilarity...

818 Boyzone When The Going Gets Tough 13/3/1999
819 B*Witched Blame It On The Weatherman 27/3/1999

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Well yes, the title thing is good, but the wonderfulness of going from wobbly-lip Dolly-Parton-covering Whitney straight to teknoteknoteknotekno 2 Unlimited is not to be sneezed at. Oh, and then Shaggy as a bonus 'cherry' on top. Sublime.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not sure anything can match Cliff Richard into Iron Maiden tho

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The Spice Girls' finest chart moment was pushing Elton's Dianafest off the top.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, Elton John into Turtle Power is a tad on the ridiculous side. (xpost!)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The Spice Girls toppled the Dunblane record as well. Fun vs Death - FITE!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the B-side about Diana too? Because Something About The Way You Look Tonight would have to involve the phrase 'in small bloody pieces' if so, surely.

xpost

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

And yet more Title Connections mentalism:

738 George Michael Fastlove 4/5/1996
739 Gina G Ooh Aah... Just A Little Bit 25/5/1996

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

how different the 90s list would've been had certain people not died. by different i mean INFINITELY BETTER (i have a list of the number 2's)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Ayrton Senna's rap record, Wheels of Steel, would have dominated the number one spot for eight weeks.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i appear to only have a real downer on 1991 - all other years seem pretty reasonable*. I think in a head to head 2000s might win going on 2000-2003 pro-rata so to speak, but this year has been rubbish and the SIGNS ARE NOT GOOD

*with obv blobbiness/cliff/footie/charity/mariah/whitney just for, ahem "colour"

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, if the 00s are shit from here on out, the 90s are clearly ahead in my not-biased-at-all view.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

we're not even halfway thru the 00s yet tho, everything to play for, and it seems the first half of the 90s was better than the second ('98 and '99 are real stinkers)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

There were two big sags I think - 91-93ish and a sort of 96/97/98 period if you leave out the Spice Girls.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember you claiming that if you'd heard Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen) when it came out, you'd have given up on this whole music lark.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the spice girls that do it for me tho. ahem

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes that is true but there are quite a few good ones from 99.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

all classic i tells ya!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I only violently disagree with four of those but a lot of the others are just OK.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

'Ain't No Doubt' is no worse than Will Young's 'Your Game' for example, which is alright. plus i have fond memories of mistaking Nail for that bloke from PM Dawn when i first heard the bridge bit of his song...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

TOTALLY SEPARATE QUESTION - What should we put on the flyer?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i will guess the four!

661, 668, 669 and 697?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

If you Google Image Search 'Hasslehoff Berlin' you get an ASTONISHING thumbnail of David Hasselhoff in what appears to be all-over grey skintight cotton holding two gold discs. Tragically, it appears to have been taken off the Interweb.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

steve: being a big gay comic reader obsessed with the charts is not enough?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i read that as McMallett for a second, and wondered why he'd kept his Caledonian roots a secret hitherto

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

683 Charles & Eddie Would I Lie To You 21/11/1992

Best number one single ever. I'm calling it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm, you've been talking to Swygart...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure I have mentioned this many a time before, but I will re-iterate. Timmy Mallett lives in a house called Mallett Mansions.

(Charles and Eddie would have been my second choice after Take That, I think)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Charles and Eddie is a highpoint yeah.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Timmy Mallett was the stand-by for I'm A Celebrity, you know?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

They picked MIKE REED instead of him?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

my favourite anecdote ever:

Tommy Boyd "Timmy you know I've known you for a while now...don't you think it's time you knocked this whole schtick on the head?"

Timmy (looking down at his feet briefly, then back up at Tommy) "noooooooooo no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no"

Timmy walks off still chanting 'no' over and over, leaving Tommy to reflect on how both of them missed his incredible accidental pun

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I am deeply saddened to find out that Long Haired Lover from Liverpool isn't my birthday number one at all. I always thought it was, but I believe it to really be My Ding a Ling by Chuck Berry.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it is LHLFL Ailsa, if you were born in 1973. (I'd rather have my ding a ling as #1 though)

chris (chris), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Born just before Christmas 1972. LHLFL went to number one days after my birthday.

gah, I wish I could make this, but I've got to work late and (as I can't book time off at the moment) would prolly have to leave early too, so I can't really come up to London tonite. Which makes me sound like a fun h8r, but I'm not. Will try to make the next one.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

7

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

PJM: real life has intervened and my plans have changed such that I am no longer certain I'll be there and if I do make it then it'll likely be 9 at the earliest, sorry.

You have your revenge, of course, by forcing me to post to ILE, against all the rules.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You're standing me up for Ikea, aren't you? ;-)

Sorry about making you post, didn't know it was against the rules.

Hope real life is good to you.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I have looked at the finances and am wavering again (also I have Flashdance and Footloose DVDs to watch YAY YAY). Oi'll see though. COME ON MAY hurry up and end would you?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you going to watch them one after the other without a break?

ALL ROUND TO SARAH'S!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

not being a snot or anything, but someone is going to remember to bring the dohickey cable thingy that was missing last time, right?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It was not our responsibility to bring no doohickey cabling, but yes I shall be turning up with all sorts of conduits and wires.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

good work pete...

sarah, you can just come to mine after, i've got them both as well!

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

PJM: obviously! I am also going to wear my legwarmers so I can truly get the "dance fever"! Or, FEVRE DE DANSE!!!! as they would possibly say in French. It goes without saying that anyone who wishes to be in on this budget mentalism is more than welcome to come round :)

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

alternatively, i will be there throughout proceedings, thus making wire-getting simpler, perhaps...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I personally am more than happy to take requests either today or tonight - Matt's has already been noted. The only problem I foresee is DJs fighting over who gets to play 'Seven Tears'. Also I have incredible segues in mind that I am aching to try and pull off unrehearsed tho this may not be wise under the circumstances.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

budget mentalism = the best kind of mentalism

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing is YES I know it's happy hour cheapo cocktails huzzah huzzah, but um, 2.95 a drink is still pushing it, really innit :) Man! I want to come out though, but I also want to wear legwarmers and watch Flashdance/Footloose (two in one box set for 9.99, GET THE F#CK IN LADIES AND GENTS).

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

sarah, you can wear legwarmers to FT, i did it last time. also, you can watch the DVDs tomorrow!

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

(listing the number ones alpha by title gives you some great runs, eg every number one that starts with a J)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be there around 7ish - I have to be at work early so sadly there will be far less drunken-ness on my part than the last Chapel shin-dig...

The mentalism of my plan is that I will be leaving early to go to the nearby 24-hour Sainsbury's to do some semi-drunken grocery shopping (my fridge is almost empty and I have no other time to do this in the foreseeable future). Yeeee-ha!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, I'm not going home first and then trekking out again ftb that is insanity, so boring old work gear sans legwarmers it would be. Um I am also going to consult with Lixi as to whether she would kill me if I took over the room for Flashdance/Footloose danceathon.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Also will Club Popular be providing cheese and jam sandwiches for staggered punters to munch on whilst they marvel at the amazing stevem DJ skeelz?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

And stevem, from the 90s list I'm torn between requesting either:
Whigfield - Saturday Night
Snap - The Power

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh sweet Jesus no Saturday Night PLEASE!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Because you are only allowed to play it on Saturday night. Similarly, It's Raining Men by law can only be played "just about half-past ten".

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The jury's in: THE POWER it is...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

nb: it's raining men was not a number one. it was kept off the top by lionel richie's blind sculptor-stalking song.

no requests for "barbados" by typically tropical? tsk tsk.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Because you are only allowed to play it on Saturday night. Similarly, It's Raining Men by law can only be played "just about half-past ten".

we'll have a long wait for Zager & Evans Exordium and Terminus.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

246 23-Mar 1968 Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich - The Legend Of Xanadu

Is the one that leaps out and goes WTF DOES THIS SOUND LIKE?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Rapper's Delight, please. See you at about 7.30.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

will the management be issuing the clientele with whips in order to capture the mood of this song fully if played?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

nb: by "this song" i mean legend of xanadu, not rapper's delight, which will not be played as it only made number three.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

we'll have a long wait for Zager & Evans Exordium and Terminus.
OH NO YOU WON'T

also, I will be playing ALL XANADU RELATED SONGS, thank you. (If THEY will let me)

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

How many Xanadu-related songs have been #1?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

2 that i can think of

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Babylon Zoo sounds a bit like Xanadu

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a REALLY GOOD remix of Whigfield 'Saturday Night' - I think Carl Cox played it on The Big Breakfast once. This was not a dream, alright?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah how much I enjoyed whip along a Legend Of Xanadu in my wacky students days. Never mind I could have taken someones eye out with the whip.

I shall be exclusively be playing records produced and engineered by more than one person. So expect Langer & Winstanley productions and much Stock, Aitken and Waterman.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I also intend to play a small eurovision medley

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

nb: it's raining men was not a number one.

May 2001, by Geri Halliwell. Evidently you aren't spending quite enough more time poring over sad old pop almanacs, MC.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, since nobody's claimed it yet, I'd like "Boom Boom Boom Boom" by those lovely Vengaboys please. Or perhaps "Whispering Grass" by Windsor Davies & Don Estelle, since that's my birthday No.1 and I've never had the pleasure of hearing it.

Damn the happy hour, that mean I might have to be there at 7 or something. Gah. Anyone got a spare...job?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Charlie the line's not good I can't hear you very well...it sounded like you said you wanted '3am Eternal' and 'Devilgate Drive', thanks!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, please, at the same time please!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't be there, but please can you play The Archies for me?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I personally am more than happy to take requests either today or tonight

the small print (enclosed in the dot of the lower case i in 'either' stipulates that requests only granted if i a) like the song or b) was going to play it anyway)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

and i'm pretty sure Windsor'n'Don were on your list anyway, right? RIGHT?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

'Blockbuster / Doctorin The Tardis / Can The Can ultra-meld must happen or this entire event is INVALID

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

*cries*. my secret weapon is no more. i genuinely had this lined up

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry Al, i'm really glad you are doing that tho

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

it's too dangerous to not hint at what tunes each DJ wants to play yet too buzz-harshing to spoil the surprise :(

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

nb: it's raining men was not a number one.

May 2001, by Geri Halliwell. Evidently you aren't spending quite enough more time poring over sad old pop almanacs, MC.

i'm quite happy to spend "enough more time" kicking your teeth in if you'd prefer, JtN.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Calm down, dear.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

don't try it.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Puh-lease.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

if I'd been there I would've asked for Rock Me Amadeus.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't Try It For Me Argentina

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(it took me about 3 minutes to think of that :(

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve, Mark, you're getting in the way of the fite...

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

oops! I TRIED IT AGAIN!!

hahahhahaha

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU BETTER FUCKEN PLAY BARBADOS TONIGHT OR YOULL B GOIN HOME IN A FUCKEN AMBULANCE

Jesus H. Clapton, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i will try and pop down tonite around 8 or 9, couple other things on at the minute, so not sure yet

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Jamiroquai Deeper Underground - How on earth did that go to number 1????

Ro, if I was coming, I might've liked to have heard this. So someone better play it in my absence or ALL YOUR FACES WILL TURN INTO MASHUPS.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Billy Don't be a Hero" by Paper Lace, please, as it's my birthday song and I've only ever heard it sung by Tim Hopkins. Thx.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

there is no chance of Jamiroquai i can quite confidently assume. it got to number 1 because a) it was released in a week so slow we actually went back in time and b) it was from the Godzilla soundtrack and that movie did quite well at the box office because everyone loves Matthew Broderick/giant CGI lizards

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone loves to watch Matthew Broderick stroke giant lizards.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Or perhaps it was THE FUNK!!!

Will be along fairly early ish I'd reckon. And if it's just the one, then 'Yes Sir, I Can Boogie' would do very nicely indeed.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

what is the funkiest number 1 ever?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

'Deeper Underground', by virtue of Jamiroquai having a really big hat and dodgy knees.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

bloody hell it might actually be 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Rock Your Baby by George McCrae?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Looking at Steve's list, it's 'Black Or White'.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

but "black or white" is a sack o' shite!

Jesus H. Clapton, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I request BLUE (da ba bee) please?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Soddit, 'Use It Up Wear It Out'. Final answer.

Sub-category - what is the skankingest #1 ever?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

flying without wings by westlife.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Christina Aguilera?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, you said "skankingest".

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ah i misread it i thought it said "stinkingest."

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I live in a world where any song I can remember must have gone to #1 -> "On A Ragga Tip"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm a little scared by how few of these songs i've actually heard of...

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

'Bop Bop Baby', of course, only made #5.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Skankingest No.1 = Uptown Top Ranking?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking that, but then there's also Israelites...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you allowed songs that sample #1s?

If so...PWEI IN THE AREAH!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

A fiver to anyone who will play Tubthumping.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

NOT NUMBER ONE

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

it's an easy rule. here is the list: http://www.freakytrigger.co.uk/popular_number1slist.html

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

A fiver to anyone who will play Masses Against The Classes or The Hindu Times.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF? How was Tubthumping not number one?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, please don't do that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Apart from the obvious: it didn't sell enough. But I remeber it selling shedloads. Maybe it was number one in Ireland..

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Tubthumping was kept off the top spot by Men In Black. Which is vastly superior.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I see your Hindu Times and raise All Around The World.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

don't forget 'Double Barrel' re skank

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Tubthumping was kept off the top spot by Men In Black. Which is vastly superior.

You missed out a bit of the last sentence I think - the bit that says "to swimming in a bath of hydrochloric acid, but not to Tubthumping."

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

don't forget "Men In Black" re. stank.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

remind me what foul apocrypha kept 'On A Ragga Tip' from the top spot. i'm still mad at Freddie Mercury for denying 'Everybody In The Place'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

WILL SMITH ROXX UR ALL ROCKIST BACKPACKER LOSERZ.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

time for another oh-so-subtle stevem hint: LET'S HAVE A NUMBER 2'S NIGHT SOMEDAY

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

You're looking at either 'Stay' (Shakespear's Sister) or 'Deeply Dippy' (Right Said Fred) there.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

and all this is why i'm not DJing...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Stay was #1 for 8 weeks, apparently.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

will smith is a republican shitehawk who should do an impression of nick berg quicksnap.

time for another oh-so-cliched carlin pun: SOUNDS LIKE TONIGHT'S GOING TO BE A RIGHT LOAD OF NUMBER 2'S!

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

B-b-but we are only playing number ones. I don't understand?

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't need to me to go "Total Eclipse Of The Heart!" do you?

I suddenly have a premonition for what is going to replace AWK as last song of the night. This is not a pretty thought.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

when did andrew wk have a number one?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

My Old Man's a Dustman was NUMBER ONE?!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello - he didn't, but usually the last song of Club FT is 'We Want Fun'. Tonight, it will be different. Allegedly.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Party Til You Puke was kept off the top spot by 73 records FOR POLITIKAL REASONS!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

My antivote goes to D.I.V.O.R.C.E, BTW.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The Roussos Phenomenon EP - I don't want to hear it, but I'll buy a drink for anyone who has a vinyl copy in their record box.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a fiver on last track being Come On Eileen.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i was too busy doing actual work to jump in to defent MIB, which is the first song mentioned here that i love.

and i used to do a mean will smith dance (although it's much easier to do to 'wild wild west' which i assume didn't make number 1)

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

FLAT BEAT.

cis (cis), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i reckon Matt was thinking of Bo Rap

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

sadly Colette, Wild Wild West DID get to #1 - I can only listen to the Cartman version

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

or else the last song will be danzzzzzing queen. or i will friggin survive.

whereas it should be god save the queen which was falsely kept off the number one spot in jubilee week for POLITIKKKKKKKKKKKKKAL reasons!

or possibly hoots mon.

but even i see the moon would be preferable to come on eileen for the xillionth time.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Blatantly Matt means the original version of Brimful Of Asha.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

wicki-wild-wild-west

[sorry, just wanted to say that]

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair, it did give you the whole plot, so you didn't need to sit through the film.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The poster gave away the plot.
As it was.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! All wrong. I was actually thinking of The Final Countdown. DAMN YOU BRITAIN OF 1986!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Will therefore condensed an hour and a half of pain into under 4 minutes. Which makes him a lot less sadistic when you think about it.

The poster wins though. Safest bet.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

well charlie has ruined my night by singing the best part already...way to peak too early!

i never saw the movie, but the crapness of the movie doesn't have anything to do with the brilliance of the song!

ugh. can't type right. that took me like 5 minutes. tummy hurts. too many nachos. help.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

why did Sisqo and Cerys never duet?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

haha (i think). hang on, who've you been talking to? oh forget it...

lIZ, THAT IS POSSIBLY THE MOST FANTASTIC THING EVER POSTED BY ANYBODY EVER IN THE WORLD EVER. tODAY.

(those caps were an accident but I'm leaving them cuz they looks pretty, like)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

steve just informed me that wild wild west did not actually make it to number 1. i might stay home now. :(

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

but ernie the fastest milkman in the west made number 1! and if that is not played tonight then ilx is a gaggle of miseryguts fit only for cat power outtakes and dismemberment plan syllabic reorganisation.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry guys, can't make this. Our new flatmate has just moved in and we will be doing house bonding in the pub down the road.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ilx is a gaggle of miseryguts fit only for cat power outtakes

I thought you said you didn't really fit in around here...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

*looks at anna

surely the best place for house bonding is somewhere where there are lots of external stimulii for conversation boosting, what could be better than lots of number ones you haven't heard for years???

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

aha! oddly, Marcello's just sorta answered the question I was about to ask...

If "Wild Wild West" wasn't #1, then can anyone find a #1 that's just as FUN as "Wild Wild West"?

In recent years, I've found:

Five - "Keep On Movin'"
Vengaboys - "Boom Boom Boom Boom"
Chef - "Chocolate Salty Balls" (also a strong contender for Most Funk?)
*cough* Peter Andre - "Flava" *cough*
Spice Girls - "Wannabe"

c'mon now...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i was thinking of playing two of those, tho i think others would like to. i really can't tolerate the Vengaboys on any kind of level and would rather hear 'Aserje'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Spice Girls - "Wannabe"

could take the roof off if judged just right, a rival for Dexy's these days

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're not going to be playing out Let Me Be Your Fantasy then I'm disowning you as a friend.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The most fun Number One I can find in that list is Because We Want To, although I have yet to hear the legendary Hoots Mon!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

nick berg had more fun the other day than i've ever had with that quintet of ghastly pseudo-pop consommes.

plenty of 1971-75 stuff please and i'll be happy.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the last dance must obv be "je t'aime."

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

or "mouldy old dough."

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, romance.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

no, but Son of My Father might get a look in with the Moroder mix

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i kiss you Alan (crosses Donna Summer off his burdgeoning short/setlist)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Turtle Power >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Wild Wild West fyi

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

turtle power OVER MY COLD DEAD BODY!!!!!!!!!!!

what a shame that "love missile f1-11" (produced by moroder) could only manage number three in '86, cruelly denied the top slot by the venerable sir william ocean.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

turtle power OVER MY COLD DEAD BODY!!!!!!!!!!!

funny you should say that

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

see i knew you were going to say that

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

OHHHH NOOOO YOU DIDN'T

the audience (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I genuinely cannot remember how Turtle Power went. "I am a turtle/I have a shell/And a bandana/they match quite well" perhaps?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i have memorised large chunks of it but i have trouble reciting them in the right order

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

thing is, if i go to this thing i'll miss the BRITISH SOAP AWARDS! that's a major sacrifice to ask of a war veteran.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Such a shame Gunman by 187 Lockdown didn't make no.1 as it'd be the ideal accompaniment for the inevitable Carlin-Mannion FACE OFF!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

mannion? who he/she?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps 'Sacrifice' by Elton John could be played to commemorate this.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

is turtle power different from the ninja rap?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Candle in the Wind '97, surely.

xpost

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, Ninja Rap was not a hit in the UK, for shame

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

what's Marcello gonna look like with a chimney on him?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

play dry your eyes. it's going to be number one for 98 weeks anyway, so might as well get in there first...

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh - this thread was violent, earlier!

the bluefox, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, i'm aiming for 6:30 myself. the only problem is that there's *just* enough time for a nap, which could be deadly...someone ring me at 6 to make sure i'm awake!

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

mannio, i so don't have bagsies on any of these choons BTW.

there is no meanness colette, merely boys playing.

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread has just attained greatness.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not a boy, not yet a cantankerous old geezer

(i think you should have the bagsies Alan. i WILL play Baby D tho)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ninja Rap >>>>>>>>>> Turtle Power.

Besides, Ninja Rap didn't commit the heinous mistake of identifying Raph as TMNT generale.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Turtle Power makes the offence of rhyming "please" with "cheese". Its even worse than Do The Bartman.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Turtle Power! Right, I'm coming! :)

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

DO THE BARTMAN!!!

(I am too pleased by this)

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt DC your logic is unsound. Remember the words of your teacher your master, evil moves fast but good moves faster.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Barima i think they were referring to Pops

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Gah! Work's actuualy finished for the day now. I could be in the air. Gah!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it would've been great if you waltzed in to Mark Morrison so we could holler 'return of yer man!' at you

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"Here he is, Andrew Farrell, he's going to buy a round!"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Colette! Wake Up!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

it would've been great if you waltzed in to Mark Morrison so we could holler 'return of yer man!' at you

I nearly thought this was about me, cause I was gonna yell "Stevem, stop associating me with every black person you can think of!"

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

hey i only associate you with every black person that's a good dancer, oh wait...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Billy Ocean?!

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

what, he's a good dancer. basically i just love black people, have you seen my website?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

That website just talks about black peopl loving you and your wife.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oh great now i have to play 'Ebony And Ivory' to smooth this little episode over...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Say, say, say.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder how they're getting on...

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, theyt need to take an ILX connected computer to every FAP and club nite from now on.

"OMG WTF, Marcello just kicked off on Stevem! Matt, Pete and Bazza are trying to intervene but he's having none of it! Gareth is strangely unconcerned."

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, PJM!

I am not at the Club. (Did you go, early doors?) I must be ... cleaning up my axe. I mean, act.

I trust, trustingly, that those present are having ... Big Fun.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Big Fun never had a No. 1!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry i didn't make it. i wimped out because i am teaching tomorrow. my students had better thank me for it.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

tell us stories

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

IT ROCKED!

That is all.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh OK then.

it was rocking, good turn out helped by random civilian having his birthday drinks with about 10 of his mates. high points:

the communal singalong to tainted love
lots of drunken dancing
random cilvilian and his mates begging us to play wonderwall at the end, "sorry mate, didn't get to number 1 did it?"
realising that the chapel has wifi and thus future nights can be blogged live (NB DO NOT DO THIS)

anyway, the chapel still love us (and who can blame them, i think we were the only people out in islington last night), so glastonbury reunion, wednesday 30th june is the next proposed date.

...i think i'm still a bit drunk actually...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 13 May 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Stevem dared to play ** ****** - aka THE NUMBER ONE WHICH DARE NOT SPEAK ITS NAME. It cleared the dancefloor - he wussed out after a couple of seconds and played a good record instead.

Quote from Pete Baran "I'd have played the whole thing. Hmph."

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Thankfully I made it home in one piece, I left just before Tom unleashed the dragon as I knew things were coming to an end.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"The dragon" being the mighty duo of Bohemian Rhapsody and Come On Eileen, which is how I presume things ended.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

also stevem played turtle power as requested above

it also cleared the dancefloor

alsoalso "here in my heart" by al martino is RUBBISH

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 13 May 2004 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevem's set was the best - the Because We Want To/Wannabe segue RULED. Also Let Me Be Your Fantasy = marvellous.

He also mixed my request (S Express) into my birthday number one (Heart of Glass) and I was touched.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Club Popular is a great concept, incidentally, from the evidence of all the random non-mentalists dancing. And there's loads that could've been played and wasn't (Crazy In Love being a big omission and I can't remember any Madonna being played at all) and would be ideal for a second event. More Club Popular please!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

crazy in love was played near the end as were both "get into the groove" and a terrible remix of "justify my love".

also that wasn't the real version of Apache by any stretch of the imagination...

i think more club popular is highly likely.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 13 May 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, "like a prayer" not "justify my love"...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 13 May 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i spent a lot of time apologising to steve for being such a total clutz with the CDs - I think I panicked him, but he managed a grebt grebt set. So did Tom. I somehow stayed shy of even the songs I wanted to hear - weird. No A-ha or Liberty X, no Human League, S Club or Mel & Kim. All my fault, sorry. Spookiest moment of the night was when we were privately saying oo I should have played Your Woman, for mannio to drop it in.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You did play DOCTORING THE TARDIS though! That makes up for everything.

That opening flourish of Here In My Heart was such a brilliant moment for La Bazetta to make his entrance.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and obviously, thank you everyone for coming and making the night such a success :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

This was an excellent night, but where was DO THE BARTMAN?! Thanks for Turtle Power by the way, I slightly grooved from the corner of the dancefloor :) Bloody hell, I am still in a good mood and not hungover! KIDS: here is the guide to a good night at the Chapel Bar!

1) Arrive early
2) Between 5-8 chuck as many cheap cocktails down your throat as you can. Try and get as many spirits as possible in
3) It's 7.59!! QUICK! LINE UP ANOTHER!!
4) CHANGE TO WATER for you are now poor
5) Top one!!
6) NB though at last orders you will be swearing your guts off for a drink (sorry and thank you WB Swiggit) :)

MDC you didn't even dance to Doctorin' the TARDIS!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Stevem dared to play ** ******

Mr Blobby? Or perhaps Aqua's Dr Jones, which I don't remember but choose to believe is a cover of the Counting Crows song.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr Jones roxx!

But no Mel and Kim?

30th June better be good, since I'll be back for it.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I nearly exploded with joy to C'est La Vie!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr Blobby was an accident...or was it? I nearly ran out of the club screaming when I realised all the CDs were in monged order and everything was a RADIO EDIT so you had to have the next couple of tunes ready to go sharpish. great fun tho, thanks to the powers that be - esp. Alan for cleaning up his messes

despite the indifference/downright contempt that 'Turtle Power' was met by generally I am more convinced than ever it is a fantastic record and you can stick your Ninja Rap up your bollocks.

glaring omissions = so many! no Dexy's, no Human League, no Take That (!!!!!), no Chemical Brothers (granted only i would've played them), no Archies, no Charles & bleedin' Eddie...but there's always next time (please God let there be a next time)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

no Dexy's

So what was The Winnah?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

end tunes were Bo Rap, Going Underground, Hoots Mon and Together We Are Beautiful

my setlist:

KLF '3AM Eternal'
Mr Blobby 'Mr Blobby' (un/intentional extract)
Baby D 'Let Me Be Your Fantasy'
Blur 'Country House' (non-ILX request alert!)
Vanilla Ice 'Ice Ice Baby'
Tori Amos 'Professional Widow'
S Express 'Theme From S Express'
Blondie 'Heart Of Glass'
Billie 'Because We Want To'
Spice Girls 'Wannabe'
B*Witched 'Oi Foight Loik Me Daad (That's Loife)'
The Beatles 'She Loves You'
Snap! 'The Power'
Partners In Kryme 'Turtle Power'
White Town 'Your Woman'
Madonna 'Into The Groove'
M/A/R/R/S 'Pump Up The Volume'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

OH GOD THE LINEDANCING TO C'EST LA VIE THE FEAR!

Was there really no Dexys? What was the last song of the night then?

I think the two records that got me the most excited last night were probably Always On My Mind and World In Motion. I can't believe I mistimed the John Barnes rap so badly.

Because We Want To is better than all the Spice Girls songs put together, I've decided.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe I mistimed the John Barnes rap so badly.

neither could John Barnes in the studio

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Because We Want To is better than all the Spice Girls songs put together, I've decided.

A bit like saying that Admiral Doenitz was an improvement on Hitler.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve, I applaud Whitetown and your Blur bravery.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

White Town was played in honour of the latest Central Line derailment (mmmm tenuous yet topical, who says i put no thought into my sets)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i think you'll find the train derailed at white city, not white town.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Great fun! I should have stayed to the end, but I had to go grocery shopping. This is what happens when you go to Sainsbury's after much bouze:

-Half fat milk
-Apple juice 1L
-Orange juice 1L
-Mars Malteser Ice Cream (X2 - 2 for 1!)
-Lloyd Grossman's Smoky bacon pasta sauce
-Lloyd Grossman's Thai Green curry sauce
-Heinz baked beans (mmmmmmm)
-Covent Garden soup (goats cheese and something or other)
-Sundried tomatoes in oil
-Yeo Valley Yogurt (Blackberry)
-Streaky bacon (i want bacon RIGHT NOW)
-Spring rolls x6
-Tricolore rotini pasta
-Butter
-Sainsbury's Mediterranean + Ham&Pineappe pizzas (half price!)
-Swiss Museli
-Baguette
-Cheese & Chives in a tube (what was I thinking? ewww)
-Beverly Hills whitening toothpaste (it MUST be good if it says Bevery Hills! Classy...)
-Courgettes (Zucchini to me!)
-Button Mushrooms
-Cherry Tomatoes
-Hearts of romaine lettuce

Not bad. And I ran into Ken C on the bus home! Sounds like he had narrowly avoided a buggering or something from a new friend he met at the end of the night...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 13 May 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi PF!

No, I didn't go. I went to B&Q, Comet and Sainsbury's instead.

Hi everybody else!

I think it might be time to start making BIG MONEY from the Club Popular concept before someone less cuddly muscles in and cleans up. Anything with the power to entice normal people to mingle with web loonies must have great potential.

Did Mr and Mrs Cabbage attend?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That Sainsbury's setlist is great.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

far better than the club popular setlist.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

No, we were up for it until I realised my car had gone on strike after being left for three weeks, so I was too upset (potential new gearbox needed - ouchie)

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello I am well aware it's White City and not White Town, like I say, tenuous

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

mr and mrs parkinson-brown did not attend as their car is very poorly. also, despite the bravado, i imagine they were shattered...

x-post oh, what she said ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

PJ - the real people were scarier than the interweb mentalists! That old bloke with the white shoes and the hot moves! He was like Michael Caine crossed with Bernard Cribbins and danced identically to EVERYTHING.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I am sorry about the car.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

it wasn't me.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Blame it on the weatherman.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I blame hstencil.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

for the record I can recall playing

Rolling Stones Honky Tonk Women
Sandie Shaw Always Something There To Remind Me
Zager & Evans In The Year 2525 (Exordium And Terminus)
Sweet Blockbuster
Timelords Doctorin' The Tardis
Wizzard See My Baby Jive
Belinda Carlisle Heaven Is A Place On Earth
Tina Charles I Love To Love (did I play this or imagine it?)
Baccara Yes Sir I Can Boogie
Kelly Marie Feels Like I'm In Love
Freda Payne Band Of Gold
Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich The Legend Of Xanadu
Olivia Newton-John Xanadu
Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers Why Do Fools Fall In Love

and ISTR Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby, and the Kinks - You Really Got Me.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i was really shy of playing stuff from 80s on, for some reason

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom and I commented on how 80s-lite the night was while you were playing - it was pretty low on 80s stuff altogether which is surprising when you think about it and NO ONE PLAYED ADAM AND THE ANTS!

I once spent an afternoon sitting in a boat on a lake in France in the sunshine with a girl I met on the holiday and a portable CD player with no other CDs except Don't Call Me Baby. It got played about 14 or 15 times... hearing it yesterday brought back happy memories.

I wish I could remember what The Legend Of Xanadu sounds like.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I need to apologise for sexually harrassing Dave B. It's upsetting to see a man cower like that.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Because We Want To is better than all the Spice Girls songs put together, I've decided.
A bit like saying that Admiral Doenitz was an improvement on Hitler.

-- Marcello Carlin (marcellocarli...), May 13th, 2004.

A bit like that, but, at the same time, not.

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

'Stand And Deliver' was played Matt!

Alan also played 'Can The Can' i think, dos quatro por favor

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone played "Stand and Deliver", I'm sure of it.

cis (cis), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

My memory of last night is very hazy towards the end - your end-of-night post upthread made me realise that I didn't leave during BoRap at all because I'm sure I remember Going Underground and Hoots Mon (mostly going "aaah, that's what it is!" during the latter).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

you left either before or during Hoots Mon i am 90% sure (?!)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

pete played devil gate drive, so i wussed out of can the can. i should have stuck to it tho.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine went something like:
Billy Don't Be A Hero
Atomic - Blondie
Whatchoo gonna look like with a Chimbley On
Stand And Deliver- Adam And The Ants
Hanging Tough - New Kids On The Block
Fame - Irene Cara
Where Do You Go To My Lovely - Peter Sarstead
Sterrts Of Paris - Winifed Atwell
Jailhouse Rock - Elvis
The Real Slim Shady - Eminem
Devilgate Drive - Suzi Quatro

And about five others I do not remember, but it was early and no-one danced.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What was the ragtime piano thing?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

the attwell song is "poor people of paris" innit? (x-post: which was the ragtime piano thing)

you also played HAVE I THE RIGHT by the honeycombs which is a TRUE CLASSIC

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was Tom that played 'Stand And Deliver', quite late on - or did you go on again Pete?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

proto-glam roXoR

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

so, no "Barbados" after all? :(

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Blondie and Madonna only acts to be played twice?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently including justify my love, which wasn't actually a number one.

no mouldy old dough either by the looks of it.

you meddling kids today don't understand the meaning of true romance.

Moaning Moaney from Moaney-sur-Moan, Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve corrected himself upthread (it was Like A Prayer not Justify My Love)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha holy shit, yeah so I thoguht this guy was looking a bit pissed off so I thought I'd cheer him up a bit you know, being a samaritan and all and we had a good dance-off earlier in the night. I think I did well but fucking hell this guy kept fucking talking, and telling me about the time when some dog was following him in the park and the park attendant was gonna put it down so he took it home and people accused him of stealing the dog. Sob sob etc. hahaha and I just drank my drink fucking quick so I could go but some lightweight loser from ilx must have left an ENTIRE PINT at the bar, so he spotted that and poured half of it in my glass so I'd stay talking with him about his fucking dog. Haha, so I drank that too, I mean the conversation was good (or my part was good) but I kinda wanted to go home. Haha, so yeah I drank all my bits and then he was gonna buy more booze from the barman (and the barman was totally like yeah ok but bottles only) and I muttered something about needing to work and then he poured half of HIS half drunk pint into my glass (what a generous man!) haha fuck I just downed that quarter pint of spitty bear and legged it. And in the fear of being followed I kinda legged it to a random direction and went to angel, and got on the 17 bus, and haha rob bolton was just there finished his shopping at sainsbury's, so I spent all the time telling him the tales of the man whose dog's been stolen, and overshot highbury and islington and ended up the wrong side of highbury fields (not far), but the 4 would take me home, so I ran back to the bus stop for the 4 and to realise that I had JUST MISSED IT. And so I walked through highbury fields and then all the way up holloway road and then home. Thank god I had an ipod I put if you're feeling sinister on the whole way through and the favourite band of my youth kept me through the trecherous journey.

so to amend Sarah's how to have fun to do list!
1) Arrive early (check)
2) Between 5-8 chuck as many cheap cocktails down your throat as you can. Try and get as many spirits as possible in (check)
3) It's 7.59!! QUICK! LINE UP ANOTHER!! (check)
4) CHANGE TO WATER for you are now poorset up a bar tap
5) have a DANCE OFF with scary man in white shoes and totally kick his ass
6) Top one!!
7) NB though at last orders you will be swearing your guts off for a drink (sorry and thank you WB Swiggit) :) talking to scary man looking sad and then end up drinking his spit after listening to an hour of how he stole a dog.

I think i cheered that guy up though, by the end his eyes were a bit teary when i told him that he was a GOOD MAN, and that it doesn't matter whether people thought he was a thief, as long as he knows in his heart that he's a GOOD MAN, and (twas a lie but) dances very well. aw bless.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

That's beautiful. You could at least have got to third base.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i could have had a homerun if i wanted to, but would you want to?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

haha wait, actually i did have a HOME RUN! as in ARRRRGHHHHHH RUNAWAY!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i walked from halfway down Essex Road to Newy green then got a cab wtf? damn call of nature...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking hell Alangs playlist is THE BEST SET EVER! Respect, Alang!

Did you go Marcello? Did you fight anyone?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

no. i wasted yesterday evening trying to rewrite my ile piece on 1962 for blog & re-listening to Consequences, also for blog, and then gave up.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a moral in there somewhere if i can be bothered to look deeply enough. something about the appreciation of music being fundamentally societal in nature as opposed to locking oneself in closeted cloisters to write about it.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

*blush*, why that's lovely Dr.C. I enjoyed it immensely too, one for the 70s kids, eh ;-) I didn't enjoy spraying dozens of CDs everywhere (like a fat-handed twat) just as steve was set to come up and replace me.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Why cant i post a question? Does internet hate me? (yes)

alix (alix), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

was that your question?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken's story just made me spew coffee, especialy "talking to scary man looking sad and then end up drinking his spit after listening to an hour of how he stole a dog."

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

especially, obv.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

was that THE scary man?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

or the man who discovered MY VITRIOL?!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

From what I hear, he nearly discovered Ken's vitriol.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 13 May 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

or the man who discovered MY VITRIOL?!

haha yeah that was a bit odd - that was Chr1s H0ught0n, a very nice chap I've not seen in a pretty while. Freind of...Marianna's it would appear? Why he showed up at five mintes to closing time, I have no idea.

Anyway.

Top nite, chaps. Bit scared by all the DANCING but that's cos i FEAR the DANCING when not already parabloodylytic. Thus, I half-heartedly wiggled just the one hip to "Like A Prayer" and then skulked at the bar for the rest of the evening. AND I lost my change from my one pint, thus meaning a Guinness cost me a fiver and I was scuppered for another - cheers Stevem for helping out a pathetic moaning git with a medicinal pint.

More nights like that please!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

still can't get over Alang's set. As Sandie morphed into 25-25 I would have wept tears of beery joy I am sure, and Band of Gold would have made me totally shapeless.

But wait, did someone say that Pete played 'Have I The Right'? Golly.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Was the Asian singer bloke from My Vitriol with the really bright eyes at your party the other week, Charlie? There can't be many people who look like him, put it that way.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Dancing. It Is A Good Thing.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus also, it was justified coming out on first day of new job cos they only wanted me for today anyhow. Would have been nice if they'd told me a bit earlier than just before I was going home, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 13 May 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I sort of want to apologise, in that I was still halfway depressed last night and I hope I didn't bring anyone down too badly. I think I was sort of mostly okay when talking, but there were a couple of times between conversations when I was very close to sloping off home absurdly early. Then later on I felt like dancing to some of the tremendous music on offer, but (and it was here I realised I was still suffering from the illness, as I know how irrational this is) I had visions of people sort of shuffling away from me on the dancefloor, and couldn't do it. I mean, I like dancing and there were people I call friends on the floor, and although I am old and all that, I'm not a terrible dancer or anything, so it made no sense at all. It was at this point I decided to get off home. Anyway, I hope I didn't mar anyone else's good time, and I expect I'll be kicked out of all this by being in Barcelona by Saturday lunchtime.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 13 May 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

dancing is an ok thing, but like sex, smoking or listening to music, i prefer to do it in private.

i was never much for school discos either. all these things make one feel as though one is being forced to have fun.

especially in terms of ilx. kate said something a few weeks ago about the horror of walking into a pub (for an fap) and realising that you knew/recognised everyone in there...quite a horrific prospect. one has nothing new to say or offer and therefore i end up retreating hastily. so it is better for me not to go to these events.

at school discos i would usually just sit around morosely. whenever anyone came up and asked me to dance i would always assume that they were taking the piss and tell them to fuck off.

oddly enough, at the time this seemed to work well in attracting even more prospective dancing partners - "oh he's playing hard to get"!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 May 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

You could say new things to old people! Or you could find new people and rattle off old things to them, - which isn't a great night out for anyone.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 14 May 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

couldnt make this in the end. vbusy at moment, next one is end of june?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 14 May 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The theory that no one has anything new to say to each other despite drinking together at least once a week since January is utter nonsense, I'm afraid.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 14 May 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(Actually, I misread the above post, apologies)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 14 May 2004 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

you knew/recognised everyone in there...quite a horrific prospect. one has nothing new to say or offer.

haha wtf??

whenever anyone came up and asked me to dance

and now i get visions of stevem asking marcello "you wanna dance?"

ken c (ken c), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin, for what it's worth I really enjoyed our chat and while some of the subject matter was saddening, your tone and approach was anything but. So in my case at least you have no need to apologise - quite the opposite in fact.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Mark - I did hope that I was pretty okay most of the time.
