Lazy Bad Dinner

You left work late. You are knackered and can't think of doing anything but plonking your arse in front of the box for the rest of the evening. You certainly don't want to cook. You are about to pass your local corner shop on your way home. What items do you choose for your lazy bad dinner?

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

A pack of 'chinese style' chicken wings, a tub of cheese coleslaw and angel cake. Thank you Londis!

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

8 lucky strikes. thank you, londis!

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Either... pizza and a bottle of plonk.

Or... an egg mayo wrap, kettle crisps, a pot of coleslaw and CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES (oh Holborn Metro Sainsburys how I love you)

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Tin of microwaved 'Full Monty'. Possibly my lowest moment.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

this was last night btw

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i once had an apple and a giant *sharesize* pack of dorritos for dinner. i felt terrible for the next day or two.

DON'T DO IT!

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Full Monty that cooked breakfast in a can thing?

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

fraid so. not bad for hangovers if you can't be bothered to actually do a proper fry-up, but dinner? come on.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Pork pie and pickled onions

robster (robster), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a godly morsel

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i just like to suck the aspic out of pork pies. yum.

Robbie Lumsden (Wallace Stevens HQ), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't even want to know what the fuck "cheese coleslaw" is.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

aahhh aspic, if it's good enough for catfood, it's good enough for me.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't tried cheese coleslaw. Is it any good? Obviously, for those of us who like coleslaw, and, well, cheese.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Urgh, the aspic is the worst part and amounts vary from pie to pie. Buying them is like Russian Roulette for me.

robster (robster), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Corned Beef Sandwich with lots of ketchup, followed by a choc-ice.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, I really want some pickled onions now.

robster (robster), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Pork Pie roulette, sport of kings

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh cheese coleslaw is yummy!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It becomes more challenging if you like the aspic but hate the meat.

robster (robster), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I want some cheese coleslaw.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

god you people can ruin anything

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"i know...doughnuts...and minced rutabega!!"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

When I used to eat meat i always used to take the meat out of a pork pie, peel the aspic off & then put the meat back into the pastry slice. Simple!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

bread, vegemite

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Canned spaghetti rings, grated cheese, toast.

I crave the squidginess of canned nasty spaghetti - the cheaper the better.

Oh, and followed by Tesco Value 'Strawberry' dessert things: kind of halfway between yoghurt and blancmange in texture, purely pink in flavour. I loves them, precious.

What did you then do with the aspic, PP? Throw it at sibling?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheese coleslaw is like normal coleslaw but it has grated cheese added. Numnumnumnumnumnumnumnumnumnumnumnum.

The aspic is good, but I like the pastry if it tastes like porkfat.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't quite remember, but I hope to god I did throw it at said sibling Liz!!

Porkfatpastry (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed always says 'let's get a man to bring us dinner'. However if I am lazy it's a Top Nosh felafel and a G&T in a can.

I can't think of anything much more claggy than cheese coleslaw, bleurgh.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

But Suzy you don't even like regular coleslaw, so how would you be able to give an informed opinion on cheese coleslaw?

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

G&T in a can remains the only drink I have been made to pour down a drain by a policeman.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Easy...skip the corner store (you're trying to save money, remember?) and go home and have a nice meal of Cheerios and lager.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheese on toast smothered in baked beans.

If I am too lazy even to reach for the can opener then: chips smothered in vegetable curry from the local chinese. (This is such a slobby comfort food fave, I feel embarrassed asking for it in the shop.)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

lager ON the Cheerios?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Chips & curry = food of the godz

robster (robster), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

microwave popcorn. dinner of champions.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

OHHHH we had curry on toast yesterday. That was BLUDDY GRATE.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm now considering buying some chips on the way home and having them with a dollop of reheated chili.

robster (robster), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Chips on the way home may definitely be the way to go for me this evening!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i have constantly in stock a big multipack (30) box of instant noodles - the most versatile food in the world, breakfast, lunch, dinner.. when you're extra hungry fry an egg or put some meat in. amazing.

otherwise for lazy dinner it's a curry from hilmarton tandoori.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, someone in my office has chips, and the smell is driving me bananas.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been so hungry and lazy at times in the past I've eaten raw noodles.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, I like the coleslaw from Bodean's or those brands which have a quite thin dressing. Any supermarket slaw I have ever tried has been much claggier than these. Cheese, cabbage and carrots together sounds like a plan to manufacture methane and mucous while asleep, however.

(mm, chinese noodles)

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

What you describe is not cole slaw. You know not of what you speak!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

If I am too lazy even to reach for the can opener then: chips smothered in vegetable curry from the local chinese. (This is such a slobby comfort food fave, I feel embarrassed asking for it in the shop.)

you may find it less embarassing if you ask for "chips with curry sauce" rather than "chips smothered in vegetable curry". cos the former makes you sound less like a celebrity chef at a chinese takeaway!!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

You forgot the onions (which I think is what makes it go so well with the cheese)

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

mmm cheese, spring onion (or sliced up pickled onion) & mayo sandwiches are the best! Add lime doritos in there & I'm in heaven!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Grated mature cheddar and chopped celery mixed with a little mayonnaise makes a truly great sandwich. But Londis doesn't have celery.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

*drools*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop it, Madchen and Pink, you are making me drool.

x-post ha ha!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Right all round to my pad for sandwiches! Then we can trash it & see if the landlord can get 205k for the fuxing house then! Who's with me?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Wooo! Sandwich and Landlord party, woo!

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Did I mention the vodka & red wine. Spilling red wine on the carpet is U&K!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

all of those sandwiches sound vile. pink, please tell me you mean doritos on the side. please.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit, let's get some cheap plonk and die the carpet burgundy with it! Wooo! Man, I am craving some serious sandwich action.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, you'd never go to Bodean's to have their slaw as it is RIB CITY there, but it is *miles* better than tubslaw, which is not good enough to pass my lips, never will be, end of.

Someone once described chips and curry sauce as the national dish of Sarf London.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Well you have them on the side to begin with....:-(

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Partay! Salt 'n' vinegar square crisps go well in sarnies also.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Crisp sangwishes were the staple diet of my youth. Prawn Cocktail Walkers worked best, if I recall.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That is the ultimate hangover cure - salt and vinegar crisps stuck in an egg mayonaise sarnie. Mmmmmmm.

Super-Kate (kate), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh mine too JTN. Whenever we'd been smoking we always had crisp sandwiches. mmmmm

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

there seems to be a u.k./u.s. split with regards to love/hate of tub coleslaw and coleslaw in sandwiches.
my usual lazy meal is goya black beans in sauce, microwave-steamed broccoli, couscous (b/c it cooks way faster than rice), and lots of tapatio hot sauce.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Laure, *they* confuse 'side dish' with 'sandwich ingredient'. I blame rationing. War's over, kids.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Shop bought coleslaw can be the work of the devil, but sometimes it's ok. Homemade coleslaw is far superior!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

HEY! The very tasty curry I cooked for you last night was in no way LAZY or BAD, Ms Clarke! Even if we did have it on toast.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you Ricardo for pointing out that this thread is about LAZY and BAD. Steamed broccoli, couscous &c. does not have a place in this thread. Using foods for purposes other than the original totally do.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I can take or leave coleslaw really, it's a bit dull, but nice with salami on sammidges.

That really shouldn't be aspic in pork pies, it should be jellified stock, which is poured in through the hole in thetop after it's been baked

And curry on toast is fantastic!!

chris (chris), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

lazy and bad? pot noodle, or even better sausage and tomato pot mash

chris (chris), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and also my greatest invention yet - the ham and cheese wrap!!

not ham and cheese in a wrap, but you chop up a block of cheddar cheese, and then wrap a couple of slices of ham around it.. the greatest thing ever!

(it's second only to the chicken skin and mash potato wrap but that requires a lot of cooking)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh pot noodle, yum!
I sometimes just eat plates of mashed potato.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't mean "chop up" acutally, i meant "cut out a block of cheese"

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, Ken, have you tried the Ham Wrap? (take all the slices of ham out of the packet, roll them up together, eat)

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't help it! i usually sit on my ass all day in an office eating crap, so if i don't get a healthyish dinner in me then i feel awful. if i'm absolutely exhausted then i'll call out, usually from the vegetarian diner for a faux big mac.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

hot pocket, otherwise myself or my wife cooks every night.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Pot Noodles were my staple diet during a half-year spent working away from home and living in B&Bs.

robster (robster), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

sausage and tomato pot mash

Is this instant mashed potato in a pot? I saw some weird German brand examples of this in Lidl when I was in South Wales over Easter. Such a good idea, I can't believe it's not more widespread. Mmmmm instant cheesy/tomatoey/whatever mashed tatties...

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

YES! when i am hungover, and lazy, and hungry, and have run out of cheese oooh how the ham wrap has saved me.

(cue mark c or someone so talk about having a ham wrap every morning.)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I am contemplating a wotsit sandwich.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Faux big mac might be acceptable. Do you put crisps in it?

(Asda does an own-brand instant mash thing - same aisle as the pot noodles)

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

don't contemplate it, eat the, Focker

chris (chris), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

from all good localshops/supermarkets near you you can also buy All day breakfast in a can

beans, bacon, sausage, egg and HASH BROWN. in a can. that you pour on a plate and microwave. i have never tried it.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

also HP London Grill oh the HORROR

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

assorted little debbie snack cakes!
ramen straight out of the package with a little dip in the flavor powder

kephm, Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Naw man! The cuzza was roxx0r, the toast was even better!

Ken, I've tried it. It is of course brilliant. I think I love all lazy bad foods. Oh, I also have a colleague who has tried the Seedy Sanchez Pot Noodle. He says "not as good as Bombay Bad Boy".

Coleslaw = ming.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

no crisps in the faux big mac, but lots of chips on the side.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i just asked my current flock of 7th graders. Four of them said they ate chips (crisps) inside sandwiches. Sour cream and onions appears to be the favorite.

I told them this was nasty and Just1n said, "it's the same thing you just eat it all together."

is NOT the same. bleh.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Just1n = OTM

robster (robster), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, my latest favourite = smoky bacon crisps in a tuna mayo roll, oh boy

chris (chris), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Sam, how can the crisp & sandwich eaters of the future be wrong?!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

oh pink, if you saw these kids you would know they are wrong about so, so many things.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

At first glance I thought this was an anagram of Ozama Bin Laden, I even had to write it out to check.

Tin of Heinz Macaroni Cheese, if some energy left: on toast. If not absolutely knackered, I add a little grated mature cheddar, mustard powder & cayenne to make it taste of something.

Mooro (Mooro), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

cheese sandwich with beef and onion crisps is my fav.

dried ramen is good too, you can break it up in the packet, and then pour the msg in, hold the top and shake the packet goooood and you're in heaven.

i don't like the bombay bad boy so much actually yet i keep buying it. i like how it's "HOT NOODLE" on the packaging rather than "POT NOODLE" though.

still yet to try the "POSH NOODLE" but i can imagine it being crap.. is it gonna be Becks flavour?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

haha oh wait Becks has no flavour

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

just1n is so not OTM - eating them all together OWNS eating them seperate!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It has occurred to me that the laziest and baddest way of eating tinned food is cold, straight from the tin. Especially if it was London Grill or the Full Monty.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

His weenie tastes of Loos.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

stove top stuffing.

anthony, Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It has occurred to me that the laziest and baddest way of eating tinned food is cold, straight from the tin. Especially if it was London Grill or the Full Monty.

straight from the half-tin that you left in the fridge from last week.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha - in February I was so depressed/lazy, all I ate at home was tuna straight from the tin.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a guy at work today that just sat in the kitchen eating a tin of sardines for lunch, straigh outta the tin! He truly is the weirdest man evah!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man.

last week at work for lunch i ate a paté sausage thing straight from the packaging. it must have looked from a distance like a very pink penis that i was holding in my hand and eating

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It was.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, you did that in publick? My lazy bads are always very private and shameful affairs.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Either a ginsters cornish pasty or spicy chicken slice, heated up and covered with beans. This is usually if I'm having to go out to the pub early and haven't got time to cook anything (ie often)

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Pitta bread, cut in half, stuff in sliced cheese slices , slop pickle or chutney or brown sauce in , put in toaster, when toasted, dip pitta pocket into houmus or some other gunk in a pot, scoff. I think this would work well with cheese coleslaw too.

Followed by an evil pop tart .

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

no the cheese coleslaw has to be cold.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well you could dip the hot cheesy pitta into the cold cheesy coleslaw oh ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh god now I need to eat somethign NOW.

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Pizza(2 slices, one with a topping), glass of red wine and an American Spirit Blue. That was last night. I rue the day when some Dr. tells me I can't do this anymore.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Pitta bread, cut in half, stuff in sliced cheese slices , slop pickle or chutney or brown sauce in , put in toaster, when toasted, dip pitta pocket into houmus or some other gunk in a pot, scoff. I think this would work well with cheese coleslaw too.

to me, this is cooking.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i know madchen.. shame on me! i did like of try and hide behind my computer screen but the curse of the open plan office.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 April 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, hiding the fact that you're stuffing your face from disapproving workmates C/D?

I was caught taking three Celebrations at once yesterday :(

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i got blamed for eating all of the reese's mini peanut butter eggs, which is not true. i've had six, i think, and there were at least twenty in the basket on monday.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

lauren is the faux big mac the big mack daddy from tiny's? I may have spoken of my love of it before.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

no, it's from kate's joint. all things being equal i like tiny's version better, but kate's is closer to my house.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i love stove top stuffing, but one time i ate so much i couldnt crap for a week. dont anyone ever do that. it's not fun.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

For tea tonight I had a small bag of marshmallows and a handful of cereal straight from the box. I am too lazy to use a microwave.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 25 April 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Why would you microwave marshmallows and cereal? That sounds like the makings of a horrible Midwest casserole. Special K Surprise.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 26 April 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

That just sounds like Rice Krispie Treats without the heating-up hassle.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 26 April 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Tonight: a stalk of broccoli and a bag of frozen mango!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

I should stop reading nummy food threads when I'm supposed to be fasting for my ultrasound! Argh *tummyrumble*

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

so many days both me and wife come home tired and have this grumpy "what do YOU want for dinner," conversation where neither of us feel like elaborate cooking or even really thinking much.

Give me ideas of good, easy dinners where I can have the ingredients stocked. Our main repertoire of dinners when we don't feel like cooking or ordering right now:

1) eggs/omlette
2) pasta
3) Amy's soups
4) some combination of bread/good cheese/olives/hummus/other spreads/other veggies
5) A big-ass salad

Hurting 2, Friday, 8 February 2008 06:53 (eighteen years ago)

ROFL I love that I regarded this a "nummy food thread", shit I must have been starving.

Trayce, Friday, 8 February 2008 07:24 (eighteen years ago)

Cereal plays far too large a role in my evening meals than it really should.

Hurting 2 - We're in the same boat, pretty much, so here's what we tend to do:

1 - Plan on leftovers (spaghetti and meatballs one night, hot meatball sandwiches the next night; cook a lot of spaghetti / pasta and toss with some olive oil to keep from sticking, then pop into the fridge - improvise on a jarred pasta sauce, make a baked pasta dish, etc.; baked potatoes one night, diced into a hash the next).

2 - Purchase a rotisserie chicken from the grocery, have roast chicken one night, then shred the leftovers and make chicken soft tacos or chicken burritos the next night or baked chicken / pasta dishes, too. You can also poach or roast some chicken parts and shred the leftovers.

3 - Breakfast foods are good (pancakes, french toast, omelettes, etc.).

4 - Purchase some good cheeses and decent bread and make different types of grilled cheese sandwiches (also good with leftover roasted veg. and / or leftover sliced / shredded meats) - serve with a salad or soup.

5 - Instead of grilled cheese, purchase some decent flour tortillas and make all sorts of grilled or baked quesedillas.

6 - Roasted / grilled vegetables are really versatile, from being side dishes to toppings for salads to inclusion in all sorts of "assembled" dishes and in fritattas.

7 - Leftover steamed rice works well as a base for soupy casseroles and in steamed rice or as a savory rice pudding.

8 - Think outside the red sauce with pasta dishes - great with shrimp and garlic, cream sauces, pasta primavera - one of my favorites is broccoli sauteed with lots of garlic, then stirred into cooked spaghetti noodles with a couple handfuls of shredded cheese (I like swiss), a splash of milk, and then baked. Also pasta salads are great.

9 - When all else fails: yogurt and granola, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches; couple hand fulls of cereal and a glass of milk.

Oh god I've never lived in a neighborhood where the corner store had anything other than Chef Boyardee, diapers, and beer.

Laurel, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

a lot of people like to shop for food on their way home from work

Mr. Que, Friday, 8 February 2008 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

A big bowl of (not instant) oatmeal cooked with dried fruit, + toast.

A big-ass baked potato with a little butter and a lot of steamed broccoli.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 8 February 2008 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

Boil in the bag rice, slices of cold meat, tinned veg.

I eat this most nights, lazy without being too unhealthy.

Bodrick III, Saturday, 9 February 2008 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

that sounds terrible

Stuff hits the spot sometimes. Every year or two I get a deep craving for their dino-shapes can pasta.

Abbott, Saturday, 9 February 2008 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

my lazy dinners lately:

grilled cheese + tomato soup (usually Amy's)
burger + crispy crowns frozen potato product
kosher hot dog
grilled salami sandwich

Jordan, Saturday, 9 February 2008 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

that sounds terrible

Hahaha suppose it's pretty dull. Just trying not to get too porky on a budget. I hate cooking, if I'm going to enjoy a meal it'll be at a restaurant.

Bodrick III, Saturday, 9 February 2008 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

lol spadgetty ohs!

MsLaura, like the sound of your broccoli spaghetti bake. Broccoli and garlic are excellent combo. Tonight I got my daughter fish and chips. And made me a good quality BLT - excellent bacon derived from recent trip to Star Inn in North Yorkshire: smoked but not overly, very unfatty, very very yummy. Quality lettuce, cherry toms, slight spread of mayo on both slices of bread, sprinkle of worcestershire sauce.

salivating thinking about it now, cos it was over 6 hours ago.

and no beer either, trying to lose that belly. fuck 40

whatever, Saturday, 9 February 2008 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

I never grow tired of pizza.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 9 February 2008 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

lazy dinner lately: "hummus sandwich"
bread, spread on hummus, throw on some greens.
boring!!

tehresa, Saturday, 9 February 2008 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

Most of your lazy dinners are well beyond what I eat on a regular basis. Probably half my meals are something microwavable out of the freezer. I actually cook maybe once or twice a week, and that's usually like a grilled sandwich or something out of a can.

The Reverend, Saturday, 9 February 2008 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

(I'm actually a v. good cook when I feel up to it, but I don't enjoy cooking at all, so I never do it except for special occasions.)

The Reverend, Saturday, 9 February 2008 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

More in keeping with the spirit of the thread, I'll often get too lazy to make a sandwich, so I'll just cut off a hunk of meat, a hunk of cheese, and grab a couple slices of bread, and eat them separately.

The Reverend, Saturday, 9 February 2008 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

i am sad i no longer have a microwave and can't do amy's burritos anymore
my lazy dinner is now chinese food from the restaurant downstairs...i haven't been doing it as much lately though.

bell_labs, Saturday, 9 February 2008 02:38 (eighteen years ago)

though im contemplating some bean curd and broccoli at the moment

bell_labs, Saturday, 9 February 2008 02:38 (eighteen years ago)

My lazy (actually, not lazy - more like terribly rushed) dinner this evening: flour tortilla, spread with peanut butter, drizzled with honey, rolled, washed down with a large glass of milk.

Followed by a frozen fruit popsicle.

whatever - you have my stomach growling; never thought to sprinkle a wee bit of worcestershire sauce, but sounds like a delicious addition. Have you ever tried a "California" BLT (add sliced avocado)?

MsLaura, Saturday, 9 February 2008 06:34 (eighteen years ago)

i'll give the avocado a go, when i feel liberal with the calories!

whatever, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

a fave: two slices toast, marmite, two fried eggs, chilli sauce (pref. windmill).

also works as an excellent stomach settler the morning after.

whatever, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:17 (eighteen years ago)

i will never get why people freak out abt the calories in avocado

rrrobyn, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:28 (eighteen years ago)

e.g., "The correct answer is 150 calories. Yes, its higher than most fresh fruits (for example, and average orange has 75 calories and and average banana, 100 calories)"

another site says 275 cals in one med avocado but again, most of these cals are from 'good fats'

rrrobyn, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:34 (eighteen years ago)

i ate two bagels with cream cheese for lazy friday dinner
would've eaten avocado but i don't trust avocados out here esp in winter - it's pretty heartbreaking cutting into an avocado and seeing that it's all dark and gross inside :/

rrrobyn, Saturday, 9 February 2008 07:37 (eighteen years ago)

i ain't freaked about the calories in avocado, just about cals in general. cals are cals, whether they're good or bad fats. eat more cals than you expend = get fatter. at least that's where i'm at now.

whatever, Saturday, 9 February 2008 09:49 (eighteen years ago)

my lazy breakfast - 3 clementines and a spoonful of peanut butter
i need to go grocery shopping!

bell_labs, Saturday, 9 February 2008 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

my lazy breakfast/lunch/(and probably dinner) was trader joe's chili - it tastes remarkably like the chili i make, which either means i should be impressed with myself or my chili is crap that tastes like it's from a can!

anyway... lazy and i need to do a hardcore grocery trip but not until loan checks come!

tehresa, Saturday, 9 February 2008 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

This thread has just popped up at the right moment because I had a lazy bad lunch today = 1 giant bar of Australian stem ginger rocky road made with fake chocolate. Yumski!

giant bar of Australian stem ginger rocky road made with fake chocolate.

i don't understand what this is. but it sounds interesting.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 10 February 2008 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

Last night's lazy bad dinner was a big handful of Triscuits. (sun-dried tomato & olive oil flavor)

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 10 February 2008 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

six years pass...

Not exactly lazy, but the dinner which resulted from my purchase of an Old El Paso enchilada kit was fucking awful.

Madchen, Monday, 3 November 2014 19:41 (eleven years ago)

I am having a packet of Fox's choc fudge crunch creams for pudding.
