Okay how the hell do you get a Gmail account?

Everyone seems to be getting them, like they're in on this big secret and I can't score one.

I know one way is just to be an active Blogger then you get the option of getting one; but is there still no other way?

Aargh my hotmail account is at 90% and it goes account critical every time I get one of those virii in the mail helphelphelp

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, can't you wait?

"Gmail is still in preview mode as we test it to work out the kinks. So for now, it's not generally available."

Ok so hotmail sucks the big one, ESPECIALLY on dial-up, but I'm biding my time.

de, Thursday, 22 April 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

A: No I can not.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Esp. When everyone else is getting one OMG WTF it isn't fair!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Those are the Special People. They're fair and have stars in their eyes and flowers in their hair.

Also tall smart and sociable. Bastards.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Elves are getting Gmail first?

Yeah but see of course I put my email there de, but they lie! They are giving them out already I tell you! I bet the thing on the bottom of that page just goes straight to /dev/null or whatever.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe you. It's part of their strategy obv.
They're not going to need much help, mind you, unless Msn, Yahoo etc. steam in with vastly improved services, which they're prob. working on as we speak.
But by then gmail will have some cache. Amongst cool people, bloggers etc.

This is weird, I received 2 invites but neither one is working, what is up?

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 9 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'RJG has no idea that I about to PIMP HIS EMAIL!! Here we go, I'm just going to knock on his door and surprise the hell out of him...Yes, hi, Mr. Gillanders?! First off, wtf is this yahoo shit? I've prepared a place for you at fromthewindowsthethewalls.com."

j0hnc3na4rillz (roxymuzak), Sunday, 9 May 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never seen an episode of pimp my e-mail, is it really like that?

I just got a new e-mail address! I've had the yahoo one for...6 years, I think. maybe 7. I have to get used to change, though, if I'm gonna get my gmail, soon. woo!

Where, Carsmile? It's not on mine :( (could that be because I haven't used my blogger accoutn for like 2 years?)

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 22 May 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

gmail is weird. is anyone else using it? you have to want to use it's features in order to make it worth using (threaded messages in particular), and doing that requires some rethinking on how to use email my part. you can't delete messages very easily which is also strange. but I haven't gotten any spam at it either which is refreshing.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

by "it's" of course I mean "its". fuck I hate that.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The threading is an interesting concept yeah and so far seems to have good and very bad points. It works well if you use it the way they want it to work - by top-posting all your replies, which I normally HATE PEOPLE DOING, but its the only way the threading will properly work (as what it does is clip off the quoted text below your new text into a link, so the whole back n forth convo looks like a neat forum board or something!)

The problem with this is, it does this by subject line. Which is fatally flawed because, for example, LJ "reply to your post" notifications all have the same subject line, but you wouldnt want those threaded because theyre not all related! So for something like that, its a bit useless.

I havent used it enough yet to see where else it is good and bad, and I dunno if the threading can be disabled (I should look into that). Im liking the idea of how they might be able to deal with spam (by having such a large repository of spam-tagged mail stored, they'll be able to get pretty smart eventually at stopping it before it gets to us).

But the threading... ugh, so far. But, it is still in beta - I should use my account for good and send them some suggestions I suppose.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlfriend does like it but likewise says it's useless for LJ.

Re: the deleting thing, isn't the point that you'll almost never have to delete mail?

I still want one. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah I forgot about this thread! I ended up getting an account from some sympathetic person. I think it's going to end up being really good in the long run because my hotmail address is difficult to explain to people and it fills up and becomes "account size critical" if I don't log in and delete stuff like literally every single day.

I'm in the process of moving my archived emails from hotmail to gmail and even though I got a program that makes it a lot less laborious it's still a pain because hotmail only lets an account do 100 emails a day, so it's taking me several weeks.

Dan I., Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Im a bit confused over the deleting thing - Ive deleted mail without a problem, whats the issue with it being a problem? You delete it, it goes to the trash, then you delete the trash. It rather cheekily then tells you "why delete? You have 1000mb space!" but it deletes it anyway. Of course, their T&C says "residual material" may remain on the system but Im sure that applies to all webmail really.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I just mean that there isn't a delete button for every message, the way there is for most webmail . Or if there is I overlooked it.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh? You can select any or all emails by the checkbox to the left, then from the "more actions" dropdown, select "move to trash". Then click yer trash folder, and select "delete forever" if you want them totally blown away. Not the clearest system, I admit.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what I mean, it's hidden in a dropdown "action". I'd rather there just be a "delete" submit button; this makes me think they don't want you to delte anything for some reason. Bad usability! But it's still in beta.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah thats a fair point, and likewise that rude "you dont HAVE to delete stuff!" comment goes in the same vein. I can see some privacy paranoia nuts having issue with this, but eh whatever. Agreed, its in beta - we have the chance to make suggestions, and so should.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

OK I signed up for Blogger and created a one-entry blog. How do I get a Gmail account from this? There don't seem to be any obvious links to it...

DougD, Wednesday, 26 May 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I dont think just signing up for a blogger now will get you an account - in fact not even all blogger account holders got one. Only "active" users, and I dunno what they class as active - I'd used mine in March and I got one, but my b/f hadnt used his since last Sept I think and he didnt get one.

If you do get one tho, you'll see a large notice on the blogger dashboard page on the right that mentions gmail and you follow the links. If thats not there, no banana :(

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Meanwhile the Calfornia Senate votes to restrict some of GMail's terms of service

The bill by Democratic state Sen. Liz Figueroa would require Gmail to work only in real-time and would bar the service from producing records.

The bill also would bar Gmail form collecting personal information from e-mails and giving any information to third parties.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Thats an interesting conundrum. I'd agree with it, in the sense that there's a potential for say, the govt, to demand a handover of someones email for "investigation" or some rubbish. However that can be asked of an ISP now as it stands - the only difference (and the crucial one, I guess) being that with POP3 mail you download and delete it off thr ISP's mail server.

I'm hardly going to be using a webmail account for anything sensitive (eg work related, full personal info etc) anyway.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 29 May 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

would require Gmail to work onliy in real-time

does this make any sense to anyone?

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 29 May 2004 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

People at my work claim to be calling people 'in real-time.' Like you can call them on delay. Yeah, that'd work.

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What d'you mean "anymore" Leee? So far I havent seen any invites on my gmail account at all (I already have 2 people after me for an account... yeesh its LJ all over again).

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Garn, I signed up purely to reap material benefit. And also to break people's hearts, but now it would seem that my heart is at stake. I dismissed my blogger offer when it first appeared, and only read today that hipsters are after this and were willing to give up things.

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I was looking at the ebay auctions of gmail accounts and saw a couple of orkut invitations being auctioned off with the claim that they are the gateway to gmail. Is there any truth to this? I'd like to finally put my stupid orkut account to good use.
(I'm sorry to come out of the blue and ask such a dull question; I am a frequent lurker and I remembered reading this a couple of weeks ago. Any help would be very much appreciated.)

Not much point in being sent large files if you cant access them after youre sent them! Maybe I did something wrong or Mozilla is crap but Ive no other way to check, IE wont download files on my PC... hm.

i'm with mark on this one. my alumni account is crap, and hotmail is always full. so if anyone wants to send me an invite, i'll be grateful for ages. (and if you do and you haven't emailed me on hotmail before, it'll help if you put ILX in the subject so i can snatch it out of the spam folder...)

i suppose it's a long shot that's shorter than just hoping google invites me randomly!

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect I have the capacity to invite at least five of you but I tried to get into my account last night and it wouldn't let me in. I'll say when things have changed.

BTW, when Google bought Blogger, do you think they did it (at least in part) because it was like buying a huge, free street team for each new thing they want to create a buzz around?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

cozenx@gmail.com

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I now have too many e-mail accounts, not enough e-mail.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Urgh - my loneliness is killing MEEE!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

actually that's a point, it'd didn't occur to me that i could actually use it *instead* of my hotmail account and thus not have to constantly back it up. i'd love one...

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

toby - i've invited you

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I sent you an e-mail, pete.

: (

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i've invited you too, RJG.

and mark c, and colette. has no-one received the invitation yet?

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a new favourite Pete B.

Baran, you're going to have to try damn hard to get back into my favour...

(thanks! :)))))

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Right. Now what do I do with it?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh God pick me, anyone -- this is my email. You get OTFMs for life.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That was a semi-serious question. What are people intending to use the gmail account for? Most people I know have web-based email accounts for signing up to things on the web, anonymity, keeping chat off work email etc. But it feels a shame to expose it to the nasty world of marketing by using it to replace my Yahoo mail account.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Having some sort of huge ILX GMail MP3 sharing thread would be kinda cool...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

oh! I guess the invitation just takes a while.

thanks, a lot, pete!!!!!!

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Please, me!! I'll even be the mascot of your team!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

enrique and baaderoni invited. i feel like father christmas!

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

answer to mark's question - so far i've mainly used it for inviting other people!

i reckon it will gradually replace my other webmail accounts. lots of people i've spoken to intend to use it as web-based storage for photos etc.

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

no email yet, but thanks pete, that's great!

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

pete -- words can't express!

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 10 June 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost : omgwtf - Hooray!! PETE B 4 LIFE, BITCH!!!!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 10 June 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall pray for Pete's soul. Consider my thanks several years off your time in purgatory, buddy!

(NB I'm not catholic, but keep schtum about that, I reckon I'll be able to sneak it through. Omniscient schmomniscient.)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 10 June 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

someone should get IlovePeteB@gmail.com.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 10 June 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 10 June 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

adaml, I just sent you every Beatles song in alphabetical order.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 10 June 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks to Pete.

Ghostface Threadkillah (calstars), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yay, thanks pete! wow, continued funding for my project and a gmail invitation all in one day... i can't wait until i'm in my own office (as opposed to scary open-plan hotdesking like today) when i can try it out.

thanks again, you're super!

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

dunno what's up with that toby, other people have got them. if you've got an alternate email address let me know and i'll invite you there too.

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks pete! email sent.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

it deals with attachments in a weird way, particularly if someone forwards you mail from either hotmail or yahoo and sends the forward as an attachment (why the fuck do any email programs do this? i can't fathom this, and it seems to be the default). I couldn't even open one of them. so maybe they're having attachment problems.

Also, I already got a "bounced" email saying a message I sent from gmail had a virus on it (a message I never sent), within three days of having the account.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(why the fuck do any email programs do this? i can't fathom this, and it seems to be the default)

Because it keeps as much of the original mail (including its attachments) as possible, is the answer. Email programs that just spew out the original into text are the bane of my life.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

hurrah! i am actually sad enough to have spent the last five minutes sending emails between my accounts. oh dear. thanks again, pete!

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

if there's anyone who doesn't deserve to have the best email service, it's bloggers.

chrisco (chrisco), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

thankyouthankyouthankyou mr. pete.

Matthew Cohen (flightsatdusk), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it really wise to assume that gmail will be the best? Certainly while it's finding its feet I'm sure it won't be.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i've got one now too. excellent.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I just signed up for Gmail, but I think I only did it because it has this "super-secret club" cachet. Do I need to replace my e-mail account?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Gah SONOFABITCH. My server got served: it won't support gmail. Fucker. That excuse I needed to get a new 'puter.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Your server, or your browser? It said my browser wouldn't support Gmail but I could "click here" to try it anyway. So I did, and it seems to work so far.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

hey guys have you tryed new GMAIL? I was totally against it at first, like you might be, but i grew to love it. It is so rad. It looks just as awesome as hotmail and it has more space! What is not to love? Even my girlfriend loves it but she was getting fat from not having enough email in her GIGABITE OF SPACE so one day I was in the park checking my GMAIL on my LATOP and now I am dateing a model! Trust me, guys, it works!

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey: Someone told me that Gmail keeps your e-mails FOREVER, even if you cancel your account. Anyone know anything about that?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Not if you purchase a headpiece or 'hat' from Zinc-&-Tin Inc.: they provide total coverage.

THis being able to choose almost any name is too hard. I feel like I need to give up the flembach, and i doubt anyone will take flembach for at least a good while so I need to choose something different. But I have ALWAYS been flembach.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

fwiw I wasn't allowed "biondino", which is my default first choice.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i wrote adaml a nice letter and he never invited me

I settled for my last name, cuz I'll be using it a lot to send job applications. Boring boring..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought about using just my last name but it isn't too common and people could mishear it and misspell it, if I were telling them it.

RJG123 is pretty good, I think.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

pretty please?

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess Pete should invite Andrew and Mullygrubber, since he seems to have tons of invites to distribute while I can't figure out how to send out even one...? Is it hidden somewhere in the site, or do you have to wait a while after signing up? Does a button pop up or something when you can invite?

I wanted it to be "Doug@gmail.com" but the 6 letter thing screwed me. That would have been such unstoppable nerd cache... oh well

DougD, Friday, 11 June 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i just have my name, it is quite boring. i am going to invite myself a few more times and get some more interesting ones.

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 11 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll invite andrew, mullygrubber and lauren. i've got a load of the things because, er, well, i just have.

the names of all the songs, or all the songs?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

that's AOL's issue

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren, are you sure you want to allow bots to harvest your shiny new gmail address from ILX?

(I have chosen my surname as my gmail address - I didn't even really want it, but I just couldn't turn down the opportunity to get one over every other C4s4r0tt0 on the planet, yo)

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Bots aren't logged in, so they can't see the email addresses.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Just a thought - I wonder if there'll ever be a public roll-out of gmail - if they give everyone who's currently signed up lots of nice perceived-valuable invites, then it'll spread like wildfire but retain its coolness until it's taken over the world! And the only people who won't have it will be the people who never spend money on the internet anyway!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Can anyone tell me how I set my browser to allow javascript to set cookies?

IdiotMadchen (Madchen), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Bots aren't logged in, so they can't see the email addresses.

People, if someone wants an invite you dont send an email to the address they WANT, you send it to one they have now, doh! Coz I think you duffed the invite you sent RJG :/

BTW that bounce wouldve been because despite the large storage, you cant send a single msg more than 10mb in size. I've been RTFMing ;)

Im still having issues downloading large attachments on it tho - from my dialup it always fails, but it works on a fast connection. Am guessing its some timeout issue?

California Attorney General Acknowledges Gmail Privacy Risk

June 9, 2004... California Attorney General Bill Lockyer has acknowledged a letter sent by EPIC, Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, and World Privacy Forum regarding Gmail and California's two-way consent requirement in its wiretapping laws. Lockyer wrote in a response dated June 4: "The potential exposure of Gmail users to liability for violation of Penal Code section 631 is of particular concern, as are the rights of those who are not subscribers to Gmail but who send e-mail to those who are."

Interesting tidbit someone forwarded along to me today:

Another gmailhack:

how to get rid of ads

Just ask everyone to put the word “died” at the end of their messages. Gmail has this filter that tries not to be too insensitive by plastering your browser with ads for caskets.

The words “disaster”, “died”, etc. all caused ads to disappear.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Will be interesting to see how many of these "hacks" google's gonna wind up having to contend with to make sure the service works the way they want.

Kind of like how they always had to be reactive with their search engine ranking strategy to combat things like googlebombing.

I am testing my new (second) gmail to see if ILX attracts spam. I've been assured it doesnt but I'm not convinced, as my trusted email address of years spam-free mysteriously became riddled with spam when I started using it here (logged in, with munged addy).

I could be wrong... but who knows!

I have already asked Trayce, but apparently she spent her last invite spanking spam. I'd like to see that.

Samantha, it took a few days for mine to show up, so if you just activated it just wait a bit. Might help if you send/receive some mail from it as well (just guessing at what the 'invite' criteria could be).

Ghostface Threadkillah (calstars), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a bit concerned that the advent of email is going to see ILM degenerating into a 'please send that MP3 to my gmail address' request board.

I also find it a bit surprising that so many people never had access to a mailbox large enough to cope with MP3s before.

oh, for us pine users:

You can do this fairly easily from pine. First you have to enable the
aggregate commands. In pines setup there is a feature named
enable-aggregate-command-set under the Advanced Command Preferences
section. If you turn that on you can perform operations on multiple
messages.

Select the messages you want using the ":" key or use ";" to select a
group (such as all messages). After you have selected the messages use
the apply command "a" to bring up a list of options. If you apply the
bounce command to your selected messages they will all be bounced with
one easy step.

I sent a test gmail message to my Hotmail account, and it ended up in the junk mail folder - bastards!

(Though I got the initial invitation just fine via Hotamil, a few days ago. Weird.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

If you sent a technical bug/comment to user support, it seems to generate invites. I have 3 left if anyone needs one.

Most expensive gmail account on Ebay:

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 25 June 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the 'your message has been sent' message is very small and innocuous and has left me wondering a few times, I'm not used to it, if I've actually sent the mail, especially considering that gmail doesn't take you back to your inbox but leaves you presented with the mail you've just written.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

just a tip for Hotmail users, who don't want all the hassle of changing over to gmail

Hotmail to increase e-mail storage to 250MB in early July
http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=22101948&tid=13692

also Ask Jeeves to increasing storage to 125MB for the e-mail services it offers from its My Way, Excite and iWon Web portals, http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/06/24/HNaskjeevesincrease_1.html

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with you, Cozen.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Update: 250 still ain't 1000.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

it's still a lot of storage for a 2nd e-mail account - other than your ISP

plus with changing over is hassle re informing friends, and changing over mailing list subscriptions etc

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even have an ISP account.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

thorJESUHOY (Thor), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't been given any invites yet. Does it take a while, or do they just hate me?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they actually shifted the location of the YOU HAVE X INVITES message (from the top of the page to the left column), so you might actually have invites if you've only been looking in one spot on the screen.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

now, is there some kind of shortcut for sending the entirety of my hotmail archive somewhere without reading and fwding each one? (i know the answer is no but ugh)

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah - archiving mail to a file is one feature I wish webmail providers would offer.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i take it that if i had invites to give, it would be obvious?

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

and seriously, gmail is TOTALLY FUCKING SWEET

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Apart from that sometimes it actually doesn't bother to deliver the emails you send.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

wot!? is that documented anywhere?

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't had any problems so far. About the invites, it used to be obvious when you had them, but they made the link smaller and moved it to the left sidebar, so you have to look a little harder for it. I think now you also get an option to invite someone to gmail when you send them a message (if you have invites).

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have any invites left, sorry. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i've had a couple of instances of not receiving mail that was sent over a day ago. but I don't know if the problem was gmail or the sender.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

G--ff, it's documented by me in that it happened to me, twice. It's not the end of the world, but I've stopped using it for emails I need to get through.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have a gmail account - what exactly makes it better than a Yahoo account, now that Yahoo offers 100 mb?

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post - I know it was gmail as both me and the recipient were using our gmail addresses.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I logged into blogger the other day, they were offering me a gmail account but I didn't click the link.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

and 2Gb > 100Mb

ken c (ken c), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

1 GB, right? But still.

G--ff, it's documented by me in that it happened to me, twice.

Did they involve attachements?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I signed up now!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

will it affect my stats? I hope not :(

jel -- (jel), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan, no, they were simple text exchanges with my gf. I've no evidence that it's not worked the rest of the time, but, you know, I have 4 email accounts now, and it means I'll use one of the others for sending important stuff.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

nick what's yr last name? i'll send you an invite

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh martin sent me one, thanks though.
I tried to register to ILX under my new gmail account and ILX said it mailed off the passcode, but I have yet to receive it. Any idea why that may be?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm confused, what's all this talk of passcodes? I'm registered to ILX as far as I'm aware.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, try sending messages that don't have subjects like "enL.arg3 yr PE.n1s!" and your mail might get delivered.

I quit doing that, and it's made all the difference.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

okay - who wants to help a brotha out¿

dyson (dyson), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

So I never got the passcode, so I tried to reset the password, and again ILX said it was sending me an email with the info, and it never came. Hmm.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.google-watch-watch.org/

Meet Daniel Brandt. He is a self-proclaimed public interest activist and the owner of Google-Watch.org Mr. Brandt founded Google-Watch.org after his own site, Namebase.org, did not get a good Google PageRank. Promoting his site or putting more work into it apparently never entered Mr. Brandt's mind, instead he decided that the fault wasn't with his site, but rather with Google. Thus he has started a campaign that badmouths the search engine and complains that its ranking algorithms are unfair. Unfair to whom? Well to Mr. Brandt's site that's who.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

jones my '1 down' wz a lurker who emailed me directly; if you still want/need one i'll give you one.

hotmail's pissawful link thing (where it gives you your link in a "you are viewing something outside of hotmail" window) often fucks up other sites; cut and past the url if yr having problems.

g--ff (gcannon), Thursday, 26 August 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

S1ocki, I just rec'd a new invite after months & months of having only 1 (a spare, in case I wanted to change my geemail handle) - I'm not sure if activity has anything to do with it, or you need to offer indulgences to the G00gle gods, or what.

BTW, having your place of employment not allow Active X (&, as a result, geeemail) to be installed on machines because of "security issues" blows chunks.

I still like Chad, but Pharrell could probably be taken down a notch or two.

"Top" "showbiz" "reporter" Billy Sloan has an article in today's Sunday Mail about how Alan Cummings has just got a Gmail account and offers invites as a chat-up line. "Only the rich and famous have been offered accounts and the change to invite friends to sign up, making it the coolest pcik-up line in the States". I could shag my way round half of Hollywood with my "exclusive" batch of 50 invites.

Article not on-line, sadly, but isn't it nice to know that the Scottish popular media is so up-to-date with this here modern interweb?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 6 March 2005 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Only the rich and famous have been offered accounts"

Is this article from about last year? Who doesn't have Gmail these days? I can't get rid of my invites. ;-)

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Sunday, 6 March 2005 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I was trying to make the point that this is how crap our local papers are here, in that this was in TODAY'S paper, and is what constitutes showbiz "news". The article goes on to say that people are buying invites off ebay. Are people still really doing that?

Yep. I don't know why, when anyone can just post to any message board and get them for free.

musically (musically), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I see that what some sellers are doing is "selling" invites by having 1 cent auctions and giving away the invites for free in return for positive feedback. Lame.
