John Mayer's Heavier Things. I had just returned a ton of records so I didn't even have to give actualy money for it. Aside from the two singles it's pretty disappointing, but it feels good to finally know.

a CD mp3 player (new, $70)
a pair of black loafers (used, $10)
a love seat (very, very used, $10)
an awesome green lamp (used, $4)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

For no immediately apparent reason, I bought a vintage mason jar yesterday, then went home a filled it to the top with the countless little 1" punk rock pins that had been cluttering up the drawers of my desk. It now looks like something Grandma Moses would have on her shelf....were she a big fan of the Misfits, Killing Joke, the Circle Jerks and the Plasmatics.a

Lots of books from eBay, including 2 by Stephen Jay Gould which make me happy whenever I look at my bookshelf.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Have I told my secondhand Stephen Jay Gould story?

My thread answer: birthday presents and the My So-Called Life boxed set (kind of for "work," mostly that's just an excuse).

Let's hear the Stephen J. story!

Yeah, seconded.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not a great story, but it's a story:

A professor of mine and Gould were visiting another biologist while they were in town for a conference, and said biologist had small dogs -- lots of them, like eight, all of them extremely hyper and people-oriented. So, Gould and the other biologist get into a discussion of adaptationism and Gould's spandrels paper, and in its own civil, professional way, it's getting very heated -- so my prof, who's a philosopher of biology but not a biologist as such, hangs back and has a seat on the couch, where she's batting dogs away and trying not to get fur all over her clothes since they're going straight to the conference, and she'll be presenting stuff.

The conversation is going on and on, and there's a dog humping her leg, so she looks up to the table where Gould & Biologist are sitting, hoping she can like give the appropriate look that means "help your dogs are humping my leg," without offending this bigwig biologist she only sort of knows.

The biologist is sitting perfectly untouched, but Gould has been swarmed by the dogs, so that from the tabletop upwards he looks perfectly serious and composed and engaged in the argument -- but below the table, he's constantly grabbing dogs by the scruff of the neck, yanking them off his legs, and tossing them aside, one after another, as they keep coming back to try to hump him.

anthony, Friday, 4 June 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

that stephen jay gould story is amusing, i'm actually currently trying to finish up reading his book "the Structure of Evolutionary Theory".

I recently bought a "like new" copy of Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy online after having a CD-R copy (which I burnt from a copy checked out from the library!) for a while. Is that album even in print anymore? I couldn't find it anywhere.

three months pass...
my two major girlish indulgences (i.e. things i always have to keep buying no matter how many i already have) are lipstick and purses. tonight i was carrying a perfectly good purse INSIDE my messenger bag, and for any sane person that should be enough, but this little fellow called out to me from inside the goodwill on livingston street and i couldn't resist:

Awww. V. cute.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought an ENORMOUS cuddly Tigger from an Oxfam shop yesterday. They're about £60 new, and it was in there for a fiver, so I couldnt' really say no. Howevere, I have no idea what to do with the bloody thing. Tigger pie would be quite unwholesome, and he looks really out of place in the living room.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Thrift adventures.. A 50s screenprint Darlene cardigan, a 50s Ballantyne cashmere sweater (may resell, it's an odd green/yellow heather that I now suspect doesn't suit me), and a neat slate grey straw tote bag with red/yellow/green details. Total for this, about $19. yay!

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I "bought" (well, used a gift voucher) a granite mortar and pestle, and a backpack picnic set for 4, and a pasta machine! My inner foodie is excited now and I wanna go on a picnic.

Tarkus.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought a jacket that matches a skirt that I had bought earlier. These purchases alternately fill me with apprehension. My sister just showed me two coats she got last Friday for $50. One is just perfect. I'm slightly envious. She said there was another houndstooth coat on sale, but they probably won't have my size.

youn, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

A Hard Candy make up kit, simply because I've never found an all-in-one set in which I like every single colour before. Even the blusher is good. I got 500 extra Boots points for it as well.

img tags don't work... to post pictures... do it like this

ihttp://theurlofpicture.com/here.jpg

i.e. type in the picture URL but put ihttp instead of http. and then the server will automatically turn it into a img tag (this is done so that it can restrict size of images)
