Trying for LA FAP Weekend of May 15th...

...to see Ned's cousin's art exhibition that weekend, and also to see ol' LA ILXORs and see my family and their new Great Dane puppies.

But I can't find a fucking flight less than $400, even leaving on a Thursday.. :( And all the surrounding weekends are half the price.

Is that weekend Mother's Day weekend, per chance?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

even Priceline couldn't find me anything less than $397 or something, even with insanely early/late flight departure/arrivals.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, DB. Mama's Day tis the weekend before (9th May). Tried Jetblue? Cheaptickets? If you can flex your dates a day or two, you might strike gold.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's fuel prices, DB, I'm willing to guess. Ticket prices have really gone up recently, and I'm just glad I got my Portland and Caracas tickets when I did. However, JetBlue I'm pretty sure *does* run between Seattle and Long Beach...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, Jetblue doesn't have any Seattle-to-SoCal flights at all. Not even Long Beach or OC or even San Diego.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, thought they would. What's the closest connections you can make?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

This is just comedy. I can go to NYC from Seattle roundtrip TWICE for cheaper than one 2.5 hour flight down the west coast.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

That's really strange, I thought they were offering it...I must be thinking of Long Beach/SF connections.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, then maybe it ain't the fuel!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Here I thought Seattle was a major flight hub.....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Southwest has $333 from SEATAC to John Wayne roundtrip (still horrendous).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Seattle can only go to:
Buffalo, NY
Burlington, VT
Ft Lauderdale, FL
Ft Myers, FL
NYC, NY
Orlando, FL
Rochester, NY
San Juan, PR
Syracuse, NY
Tampa, FL
West Palm Beach, FL

So basically, Jetblue can only take me to Vermont, New York, Florida, or Puerto Rico. (Admittedly, this is now tempting me to take a last minute flight to elsewhere other than L.A. now)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I CAN FLY AND PARTEEEEE WITH NUMBA ONE TERRY RILEEE FAN!!!!

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

If you fly JW out to LA I will be there in a <3beat.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I know of a good show in NYC on the 15th.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it good enough for a $198 flight? (Jetblue is offering $99 each way between Seattle and NYC for the next month and a half)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

well, I could put you on the guest list.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF? Tis twisted that you could fly straight here (Ft. Laud), but not down the West Coast.

"Airport smackdown vs. Customer Comfort: C/D?"

(xpost)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax, if you score me a nice clean benjamin, I can fly JW out to Seattle... is that a good compromise? Will Seattle ever be the same afterwards?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, I don't think I'd pay $200 to see PG6, Double Leopards, Simon Wickham-Smith, Samara Lubelski and, uh, me, but if you're in town, it'd be something to do.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

DB:

Do you have a ring modulator or an echoplex and a joystick?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I can simulate ring modulation on my computer, but no echoplex nor joystick sadly. However, I do have a friend in Portland who has both.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

h, i'll be in NYC twice in June, so while I'll certainly be missing that show sadly, I will be around just a month later, if that will make up fer it.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmmm. I smell a subpop single cooking.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

ah cool well perhaps we can get juleps or whatever.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

(keep in mind, once JW comes out to Seattle, I'll need another benji to send him back to Rochester)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Juleps with Stencil is a perfect title for a June NYC Fap!

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask JW about his experience with people with wads of benjimanz.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

actually after like 3 pitchers worth of homemade juleps on Saturday, I think I'm due for a julep moratorium.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, back to this No Less Than Three Hundred Something Bucks Bullshit For A Flight To LA From Seattle In Mid May bullshit... and how to avoid the bullshit and the bullshit.

h, there are plenty of substitutes for juleps. And a month is a long period of time to get over dejulepization.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(If worse comes to worse, I do plan to come down to L.A. in late May some time, possibly right before Memorial Day Weekend, if I'm not working by then, and I can find a last minute cheap ticket)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Elvis Telecom to thread! Actually, maybe the answer is to get down to Portland and then fly from there?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

No Jetblue service in PDX.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(although I've saved $150 one time on a flight from O.C. back to Seattle with a three hour layover in Portland, so there's an idea)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

how much are Amtrak Seattle to LA tickets these days?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, but other airlines? xpost slightly

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

$350 instead of $400 out of Portland to LA.. then again, the cost of the train/bus ticket to Portland from Seattle will put me right back up to $400. :*(

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I ended up paying close to $300 (by the time you added in airport tax, etc.) for my LAX<->PDX ticket. I flew United, but I bought the ticket through Priceline. JetBlue cross country is cheaper

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned: that last quote was Priceline.

h, you have a point there... although, I'm not sure I want to do another 40 hour ground trip again... (I'm done the Seattle-to-LA train ride before, and while it was fun, it was really really exhausting.. and to do that twice = ugh... good idea though)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

DB, the only way to avoid that seat-mate-falling-asleep-a-drooling into-your-lap bullshit is to fly the plane yourself. Shame of it is, might turn out cheaper in the end.

Otherwise, try http://www.qixo.com (Another cheap flights site.)

Keeping fingers crossed.....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

my bro lives in PDX and has a pilot's license. But he's sorta rusty and may be busy that weekend anyway.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

he doesn't live in PDX i.e. the airport or "Dignity Village," either.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(sigh, going to Ft. Lauderdale for a weekend instead is sounding more and more enticing, sadly at the expense of my LA homies)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

WAH. Yeah see if I care...oh wait I see you in a few weeks anyway.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(Ack! Seattle to Ft. Lauderdale and back is $700 on Jetblue!!! WTF!)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(But, Seattle --> NYC --> Ft. Lauderdale and back is $400 altogether... WTFingF??)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Check Southwest. I did a search for leaving Seattle that Friday and arriving at LAX that following Monday and it was $198 maximum.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, my final plan:
* Stence will fly to LA to drink juleps with Spencer
* JW will fly to Ft. Lauderdale and become a top Miami turntablist
* Ned will fly to Alert, Canada
* I will sit here on my fat ass and go back to my last plan

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

* see what dean just posted

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

* JW will fly to Ft. Lauderdale and become a top Miami turntablist

see also: Rat Bastard/Monotract/To Live and Shave in LA/Harry Pussy.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dean, the $198 max is one direction

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

However, as you and gygax noted, this is indeed the cheapest option I've seen so far, and is tempting.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

But, Seattle --> NYC --> Ft. Lauderdale and back is $400 altogether... WTFingF??)

Well, damn! Taking "Pong" a bit too literally.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

* Ned will fly to Alert, Canada

I have questions.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck it. I did it.

Thank you, Southwest airlines, gygax, and dean. I paid the price gygax quoted above. Ah well. I really want to see my family and those goshdarn lil' great dane puppies. This is will my last chance to see puppies that small. And I can see George Raggett's art!!! and FAP in LA on the 15th!

And possibly have an Oakland airport breakfast FAP on Sunday! @d@m, don't forget to bring MARMALADE!

(Sorry, it's the Minnie Riperton that's doing it to me right now, as far as my current marmalade fetish goes)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Score! Congrats! But beware of sunburn....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been hot and sunny all month in seattle.. aside from three days in the past week. I already have it.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay, thank you Global Warming for making northwest weather like California weather and Bush for ensuring that for the next decade... PLUR AND PUPPIES!!

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Whee! Oh wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(Needless to say, rah for the Brian and his visit! Art! Fun!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(wince) What's the highest SPF you can get away with?

(The subtitle for this thead should be : "How To Defeat The Airline Price Nazis")

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Dean, the $198 max is one direction.

My apologies. That's what I get for trying to be helpful. I hope you got the FUN FARE.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't even given the Fun Fare column.. and the next higher level were all unavailable, too.. but I got the "Advance Purchase" fares both ways.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Not bad. The FUN FARE is where it's at though. FUN SIZED plane ticket, that is.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Not as good as the FUCKING FURY FARE. That's worth a shot next time you go Southwest.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You're thinking of the FUCKING FURRY FARE, db.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't need that image in my head.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I more than qualify for that fare, Martin! And so do you! So what gives?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 May 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Plan anybody? When does George's exhibit start? I'm totally down for a Westwood/UCLA area lunch, yo... that area has tons of great food options.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

At this point I have to speak with George more thoroughly about his schedule, so we can get the grand tour and all that. (Such as it is -- it's a gazebo installation right in the front hall of the Armand Hammer and the exhibit as such has been running for some weeks now -- here's the webpage again, with a photo of him as well!) I don't mind going up early for lunch, I still need to check with Stripey to see if she can make it or not. If not, I'll make arrangements to at least get over to Westwood or thereabouts somehow.

Meanwhile, SPECIAL SECRET EXTRA GUEST!

George told me the other night that in fact his brother and my other paternal cousin Mark will be in town -- this is the feller I'm staying with up in Portland for the first night or two, at least. So you'll have a chance to meet THREE RAGGETTS IN ONE PLACE, can ya stand it? I'm half tempted to try and persuade my sister to fly down as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

RAGGETT OVERLOAD

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

YAY!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I really want to see that exhibit. The more Raggetts, the merrier.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, you'd better show up, ya punk, after this 'I have to do productive and creative things this Saturday' excuse of yours for Chakifest. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I will probably be working that weekend, but I am in the area and should be able to break away. Should be fun.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

dean, if you don't show up on may 15th, I'm totally going to put on my trucker hat and come over to your house and do your roommate in the ass on your couch.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, DB, that was GEAR!...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(Not that this isn't a good threat anyway.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew that. I'm just letting this be a warning to dean.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

*wonders if dean's roommate is a 300 lb. Hells Angels member currently out on parole*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Even so, this is HIS COUCH we're talking about.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

*wonders if dean's couch is in fact Edward Gorey's Curious Sofa*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Taken by Dean at a recent party.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

dean, if you don't show up on may 15th, I'm totally going to put on my trucker hat and come over to your house and do your roommate in the ass on your couch.

One of my roommates is actually an ILXOR! TAKE THAT DONUT BITCHES!

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeeeeeeeehaw, double the fun!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you won't have to bring your Weezer and JEW CDs on the plane with you as I already have them here. You can throw them on the floor after you get done making sweet love to my roommate.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

hey im playing a really great party at club good hurt on the 15th if you guys wanna come!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

There'll be a lot of good hurtin' that day, that's for sure.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is Good Hurt?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's on Venice, west of the 405 a bit.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the west side dude. its not a bad place. they got a writeup in the latimes a couple months ago for being a westside club that wasnt shitty.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

NOT FAR FROM TITO'S TACOS

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

GYGAX I H8 U OMG

Bill, you shouldn't show your face around here with DB threatening your private starfish.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

No worries, Bill.. Dean's couch will be taking the brunt of the butt buntin'

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

O U BASTERD I H8 U 2

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(the irony is that it actually is my couch that is in the living room)

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not irony, that's delicious coincidence.

Good Hurt: As long as I can get home early enough for my hideously early flight back to seattle on Sunday morning, I'm down with Chaki party accion Saturday night. Chaki, please tell me you will go on at a decent hour.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i'ma get up in this??

rgeary (rgeary), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Good, good.

Yeah, Kaycee mentioned that Venice thing to me as well. Depending on what the day's plans are, I will more than likely be wanting to hang around with George and Mark for the evening, but again I need to see what Stripey wants to do also. At the very least, I'll talk to George and see if we can plan for the Armand Hammer thing for the afternoon, maybe followed by dinner instead of aiming for lunch?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Keep in mind, guys, that I will have no rental car. I will depend on the glorious bus systems in Los Angeles in order to get from A to B to C. Getting to UCLA from my house (in the Palisades) will not be a problem at all. Certainly getting from Westwood to Venice Blvd. near 405 will not be a problem either (and perhaps might be walkable.). Getting from Venice Blvd. to Santa Monica and hence a taxi ride back home might be a slight problem. So, yeah, where I go depends on MTA and the Blue buses, for the most part.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon, we wanted to take you to Whittier and bury you in soft peat.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Soft Peat the hot new Whittier emo rock sensation band?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Terrible name, anyway.. I think Softer Than Peat would have been a more emo band name.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The Soft Peat

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

or

The Soft Peat Truth

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

With their album Woe Upon the Houses, You Judges, You Pharisees

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

No Ned, that's from the other new Whitter band called Rubberneck You Black Asphalt.

Maybe I'm confusing this band with Softer Than Pete.

Oh, and btw, is Arthur going to be around? Will I finally meet the man, possibly?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to call him tonight about both this weekend and next -- hopefully he'll be free!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

OK THE PLAN:

Meet at the Armand Hammer museum (off Wilshire in Westwood I believe) at 2:30pm!!!

We will meet, hang out, see George Raggett's cool exhibition, say hi to each other, plot from there. I will be there. I might want to go to Amoeba in Hollywood afterwards (since I've yet to go to the LA Amoeba) or after an art exhibition late lunch FAP of some sort, but it's not urgent.

Okee?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

This is for Saturday May 15th, I should clarify!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I BET NED WONT BE A MAN ENOUGH TO MEET ME AS AN L.A. VISITOR (MAKES SELF-SETUP INSULTS OR REFERENCES TO PHIL COLLINS' WILLIE)

What time do you go on, pablo?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

around 8-9 o'clock!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be there!

I'm so sorry for missing Chakifest, I was having a bummer of a weekend. And now I can't make it to Chaki's show cause I'm DJing at the gay bar that night. Don't hate me, Chaki.

If anyone want to drop by after the Chaki show I'll put you on the list, but it hasn't been so hot lately. I'm having to pander to the wrong crowd. Although they still go apeshit every time I play "Don't You Want My Big Head", DB!

It's at Akbar, on Sunset and Fountain in Silverlake.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 13 May 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay for Arthur!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 May 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ROC ON!

Maybe I should try to show up for this one.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 13 May 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, nick, I owe you 1978 and 1988 CDR go!s

(and I've finally got a sac of packages to send out next week to other ilmers and ilxors... huge apologies to l custos and his patience).

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 13 May 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

msg to ned to elvis T....

wasn't able to have time to dub "d*g!" for you... so I won't have it this weekend. but I will mail a copy to you instead, maybe for your 1973 CDR GO!

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 May 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'm here in L.A.

Had a great conversation about the upcoming Prince shows with two older women on the bus to SeaTac early this morning. ("I don't care what kind of music Prince will play, I just want to see that boy dance.") Afterwards, they kept on talking about all these shows they saw in Seattle... Mary J. Blige, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes... one of them talked about D'Angelo and how "then he took some clothes off.. i saw his thing. yes i did." They then commenced making barbs against Timbalake. Just when you think you've overheard the best bus conversation ever, along comes the BEST FUCKING OVERHEAD BUS CONVERSATION EVER!

Sacramento Airport was, well, an airport. Except their Home Turf sports bar/restaurant is far better than SeaTac's. They have a full four-screen wall blasting nu-metal videos and actually is filled with nu-metal ultra beef broheem dudes drinking beer and punching each other's shoulders really hard.

Their warning about unattended luggage is far more boring than SeaTac's, though. SeaTac's announcement goes, said in full joy, "Unattended bags or luggage can and/or will be confiscated and destroyed! :-D"

OK, now i now the reason this weekend was an expensive weekend to fly to Los Angeles. E3. (I saw "E3" shuttles) Fuck. I shoulda known. My slightly haunting past comes back, kinda.

I have taken some Great Dane puppy pics already and more will come. Most importantly, I took a mini-AVI movie of the puppies playing with each other. I can't host it. If someone can host a megabyte of space for a small amount of time, get back to me by Sunday or something.

Preparing for LA FAP Saturday!

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 15 May 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I was in a shared shuttle van back home filled with visitors from London and Australia. They were all excited, asking me about Hollywood and what to expect. I said, "um, I'd spend a good day in Santa Monica and Venice, then check out Fairfax and Farmer's Market, then Westwood Village, then parts of Century City, then maybe if you feel like seeing really grimy touristy hell, the heart of Hollywood." They made the fatal mistake of asking a native. I feel bad now.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 15 May 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit, I should have told them about Club Good Hurt this saturday!

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 15 May 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, E3. So that's why the traffic was so shitty driving down Figueroa on my way home from school today.

Do you have any of CDs for me? I have to trade in my Ipod and I'm gonna lose all the stuff I'd gotten from the sock drawer, darn.

Well, see ya tomorrow, DB!

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 15 May 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I will be there (although I'm sort of on call for a visiting friend - though that should be later). If you're driving, park in the lot under the Hammer itself (and validate at the museum - although they'll give you the validated price if even if you just say you went to the museum). Don't mess with the evil Westwood parking meters.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 15 May 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

What are the plans post-Hammer but pre-Chaki? I may be able to join up mid-FAP.

nickn (nickn), Saturday, 15 May 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Arthur: I have a CD for you.. hopefully something that's perfect for your djing later that night (unless you already have it)

Spencer: I'm not driving. I'm bussin' yo. Although there might be a plot to have me driven to Amoeba records right after the Armand Hammer... we'll see about that. I also have that same CD for you as Arthur.

Nick: I have your CDR Go!s for you that I promised. And I partially answered your post-Armand pre-Chaki FAP activities. I'd be up for food thing after Amoeba if that was desired. But I'm restricted to either a) bus or b) whoever's willing to give me a ride somewhere convenient for me to get to Club Good Hurt, although I will not impose.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 15 May 2004 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

and Arthur, why in holy heck do you have to trade in your iPod? Why don't they take your wife, your children, your MANHOOD TOO! :'(

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 15 May 2004 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

After the Hammer, I think we should walk a block or so away to the Westwood Brewing Company. It shouldn't be overrun by undergrads at that hour (although who knows), and it has nice outdoor seating and food etc.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 15 May 2004 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i may be able to join at or before chaki-time. i will find you by shouting "I-L-X" the way DMX says his name. i think i know what ned looks like.

if anyone (donut?) need a ride in reasonable distance, just hit me at my email address for my phone number.

.rob (rgeary), Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i know what ned looks like.

Actually, I won't be around for ChakiShow, alas -- pretty much I'm only up there for the afternoon with friend/sometime ILX lurker Stripey. But as last week was ChakiFAP, merriment was had. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

oh no ned!!

.rob (rgeary), Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

See, sir, this is why you have to show up to other events too. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i might try to meet up post-hammer time then, if i can figure out when and where that is.

.rob (rgeary), Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

rob aka InverseNed... I emailed you!

I'm off to catch a bus pretty soon, so hopefully those of you who have my Seattle phone number know it and will use it. If not, there are certain ilxors in L.A. and, of course, Seattle that know it. and you can contact them virtually (oooh, haven't used that word since 1996, I feel all warm and retro now) if they are not incredibly busy as well

DB are you guna come up and freestyle with my ass tonight?

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Saturday, 15 May 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry to everyone for leaving the last FAP unexpectedly without saying bye to anyone but birthday boy Chaki but I have been having a very moody past few weeks. I emailed Ned an apology but I don't know if he got it.

My 7-year old nephew has slowly been dying of cancer for the past month (the malignant tumor was removed in January, and he was given "3-6 months"), so everything is a wreck. But of course it's no excuse for further erratic behavior or rudeness on my part. I just try to compartmentalize my mind even more now ("DON'T THINK ABOUT IT, ...DON'T"), to mixed results. Hope you guys have fun today, see you around.

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 16 May 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I emailed Ned an apology but I don't know if he got it.

Not received, alas, but don't fret -- and now that I know what's up, I don't blame you at all for having to leave last week. My best for you all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 May 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Vic, I wish you the best... that's really terrible. No worries about moodiness, as it's completely understandable; and I remember you being perfectly fine the one time we did meet for a FAP, so I think everyone's got your back here.. still though :(

in any case, thank you all for the FAP fun/love today... Ned and the Raggetts, Stripey, Arthur, Spencer, and Rob G (thank you for the rides!). .. and later Chaki, who is absolutely a blast to see perform live (nooooooow I know). It's been a great day and a half here in L.A.. very action packed.

The only slightly disappointing thing was actually Amoeba records in L.A... I had a pretty extensive and broad mental list of things I wanted and searched for, and the store had none of them, new or used... and nothing I wanted was exactly really hip or rare either. I found the first Pointer Sisters CD from 1973 -- my only successful find, but I wasn't in the mood to wait 30 minutes in a humongous cowherd of a line to buy one budget CD. LA Amoeba may be the single greatest record store in the country as far as massiveness, but it certainly isn't the most comfortable record store at all. I felt like I was in everyone's way all the time. That's not a very conducive record shopping setting for me. It makes the Berkeley Amoeba feel like a hole in a wall your-friend-owns-it independent record store in comparison, as far as personal space and tension. In comparison to Amoeba in LA, I found several amazing used deals at -- of all places -- Penny Lane around the block from the museum in Westwood Village, that neighborhood of which is now half deserted and up for lease.

But the photos.. this is a landmark weekend for photos, that's all I'll say. I hope they cheer everyone up once I post them tomorrow or Monday. :)

Congrats to Rob for his first ILX FAP too. Hope we didn't outgeek you or anything :)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 16 May 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry to hear about your nephew, Vic.

I got to Amoeba at about 6:30 and never saw any of the FAPers, but I figure you were there earlier. It wasn't so crowded then, but the bins are overstuffed so that made browsing hard. I ended spending a bit over $100 anyway (including a Lollies CD for $5) At the end I felt too wiped out to try and go back to Good Hurt for Chaki. Hope you had a good show.

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 16 May 2004 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I found several amazing used deals at -- of all places -- Penny Lane around the block from the museum in Westwood Village

Penny Lane was always a standby in my undergrad days, glad to see it's still good for that. :-) I will say that shortly after DB had expressed his desire not to wait in line, Stripey and I went up to purchase and we only had to wait about a minute, so the line looked MUCH worse than it did -- there's a reason they have all those registers open! I agree, though, that it's a pretty overwhelming experience, and while you can browse (especially in the less crowded sections -- Stripey concentrated on world music and the crush was far less of a problem), it's almost better just to go in with a specific shopping list in your head, check on those, and then move on.

Anyway, yes indeed, rah for the FAP! Pity about missing Chaki but I admit I was pretty tired towards the end of the day. The early photos were hilarious so I can only guess what the Chaki ones are like!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 May 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the westside is the best side!

i feel like i've entered some secret club. thankfully the initiation ritual is pretty gentle. you are all a joy to be around and i'm sorry i could only spend a short time! props to donut for putting up with my poor navigation choices on the way to amoeba and entertaining me with stories of this mysterious "seattle." amoeba itself, as donut noted, was a little overcrowded and i didn't find anything i particularly needed either, but i can think of worse things to do than poke around a record store for an hour or two.

so sad i completely hit the wall around 6 and had to skip the show. i went home and crashed almost immediately. but in any case everyone was lovely and i only regret that we didn't get more time to geek out about music, seriously!

.rob (rgeary), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

There will be time enough for that, sir.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

also i don't want to spoil the surprise of the forthcoming photos, but spencer's sunglasses are awesome. i wanted to steal them when he wasn't looking.

.rob (rgeary), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

There were actually two confrontations at LAmoeba!

The first one involved me and this "homey" who stretched his arms across three aisles of vinyl (which were, of all things, bootleg remix 12"s) behind him, probably so he can "hold" the section for his other "homey". I kinda gestured very gently "um, I want to look here, get the fuck out please k bye?". Then he did this "psssss"/*laugh* gesture like I was the most anal person on the planet, jumped off, lifted his hands, and sarcastically offered me to look there and left. End of confrontation. OK, that wasn't really a confrontation, but more like an awkward moment.

The real confrontation involved four people trying to vie for the last copy of the latest Pinback CD-EP "Offcell". Long slim hipster dude w/ attached wispy girltoy vs. two short Shellac & Bellini T-shirt wearing milquetoasts guys. They argued about how ridiculous each other were for trying to covet this CD, and the most hilarious part was when the girltoy detached herself from longslimhipsterdude and said "OK, LIKE, if you're soooooooo into Pinback, why don't, like, go home and order it on Amazon Dot Com, instead of arguing with us like a bunch of dickwads!" It's the most unnecessarily tense moment I've ever witnessed at a record store. It was pretty much the deciding factor that I don't think an Amoeba sized store is really my kind of record store.. Either that, or L.A. indie dudes have become FAR more prattish since I left.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

(anyway I'm home now... photos will be coming soon...)

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, ridiculous joy. You entertain me with this folly of theirs, you do. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 May 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

la indie dudes get the gas face.

i've generally found the hip hop, electronic and reggae-bleeding-into-world sections of amoeba to be friendly and polite, though i think the overall weekend crowding overrides this sometimes.

and of course the back room (jazz and classical) is like me and the occasional cool old guy.

Shamelessly, I have to say I'm incredibly proud of myself for the Steely Dan joke, I made it literally five seconds after we first saw the photo.

great pics db! nice job on the mar vista area, i know that stretch pretty well and you nailed the cool/odd vibe there. naked saucy mannequins wearing fabulous wigs behind bars mostly sums it up. i like the bowling alley that's right near the kenpo karate place you can see in one of the shots.

those action shots will teach me to miss another chaki show. i would have honestly died if i tried to go, though!
