i've never been to milwaukee -- for some reason, i've had an inexplicable urge to see that place since i was little. maybe too much laverne and shirley?
-- Eisbär (llamasfu...), May 12th, 2004.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

laverne and shirley ... the show that made basement apartments seem cool!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Not with Lenny and Squiggy always in it. But better them than Carmine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

You can pay $5 and get a brewery tour, four free beers at the brewery, a lovely pint glass and two tickets for free pints at nearby bars.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

lenny & squiggy are the ONLY thing about that show that i currently like.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You can walk almost anywhere in the city in less than two hours.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

what about the brewers?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The art museum is beautiful, the streets are relatively clean, the beer is cheap, and there is no shortage of old men peddling canolli. I probably spelled that wrong, but see, we have very cheap beer here, and I've been taking advantage of it this evening.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

including The Beast?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Home of PABST! MILLER! SPARKS! STEEL RESERVE! SCHLITZ! BLATZ! and any number of others, and yes, Brewers games are very, very fun. During the 7th inning stretch, they play "Roll Out the Barrels" and everyone polkas.
x-post...Yes, and the BEAST!

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, there is a vibrant local band scene, a gorgeous lakefront, and the best secondhand shopping I've found anywhere.
I do love drunken gushing about my hometown.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Milwaukee has the (first? only?) Concertina Bar in America, and one of the biggest annual festivals in the country, and it's less than an hour from Madison and less than an hour and a half from Chicago if you are a decent driver, and you can go to dollar Pabst night and not be surrounded by hipsters, because there's always been dollar Pabst night here. And you can see Mike Schank on the bus. And it's so cheap to live here. And Milwaukee was voted "most lesbian-friendly city in America" last year, I think. Yay, I love it here. Yay, I love Steel Reserve!

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

As a sidenote, I have always wanted to work in a brewery like Laverne and Shirley. Just hanging out all day with my best friend, making sure caps fit properly onto bottles. What could be better?
The answer is: NOTHING.
I had a friend who was a tourguide at the Miller brewery a year or two ago, and if you work there, you get a free case of beer every month, and two free cases in December, for the holidays. Should I try to get a job there?

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I met Mike Schank while playing buckets outside Summerfest one year.

Anyway, Kirsten OTM, she has it covered.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Only tried it a few times -- to me Milwaukee looks like Chicago after a neutron-bomb attack.

I've been out in Milwaukee on a Saturday night, and it STILL looks like that. Not a soul to be seen. Unless the Brewers are playing or they're in college, seems everyone just sits home with a 6-pack. No thanks.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, Ann, aren't you from some tiny town in the middle of nowhere, Wisconsin? I'd think you'd appreciate Milwaukee after that. And if there was not a soul to be seen, you were clearly in the wrong part...unless you're someone like me. I happen to seek out the vacant parts of the city on weekends so that I can go to a bar and actually have a conversation with my friends, instead of being smushed up against a wall and feeling like I need a hearing aid.
Jordan, doesn't Mike Schank RULE? I see him on the bus a few times a month, and he just makes my day every time.
I wish I wasn't so drunk, because I could probably make a better case for Milwaukee if my head was clear.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

wait there's old men on the street selling canolis?!!?? that means Milwaukee is a third of the way towards being my utopia.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I'm just pissed because a junkie from Milwaukee stole my candy-apple red bass guitar and sold it for drugs before -- you know, I think he may have died of an overdose, come to think of it. Music kills! Anyway, I started in a tiny town but I wud gone soon's ah could be. Wow, I wish I were drunk. I spent all my money on CDs. Have fun!

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh ooh, there's Jimmy John's and Pizza Shuttle and Atomic Records and Gallery Night, and unpredictable weather and ten degrees cooler near the lake and McKinley Marina and Sendik's and people who are unpretentious and will stop to give you cash if you're out of gas, and cheap, huge breakfasts at Jean Pierre and Riverwest basement shows and Beans and Barley and tons of darling Scandinavian boys and people who say "Uffda" and strong coffee and fried cheese and UWM having one of the best creative writing grad programs in the country, and I want to get in but I think I won't.
x-post...Oops, what are the other two thirds?

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

when you go to the milwaukee county museum, go and see the big diorama of indians hunting buffalo on the plains. on the right side of the stone guard wall, at knee height, there is a secret button that will make the rattlenake's rattle rattle! best thing ever!

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

4 Words: Frozen Custard at Kopp's.

jennpb (jennpb), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahh, this thread is making me love the MKE. I have a week off at the end of the month, and I decided last night that I'm going to spend a portion of it drinking and going to Riverwest basement shows in Milwaukee.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Milwaukee is fantastic. Don't miss out on Farwell Records, yo.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I like milwaukee OK.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(Cameron to thread, btw)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

What made it famous made a loser out of me.

:'(

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Beer?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

cheese.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(I think that was tim hopkins')

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Badgers.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I was kind of let down by Milwaukee; is Madison any better? Clinton was speaking in a park when I was there: that was the extent of excitement to be found.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

madison rained on me, once, and wasn't minneapolis (maybe for the best), another time.

I bet it's okay, really.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Madison's all right but Milwaukee's a little more diverse.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Madison has its good points. It can be very pretty, I like living here, and I'm pretty fond of the music scene (the bands and people, if not the venues for the most part). I'm pretty sick of State Street/central downtown and there isn't much else around, but I'm warming to the Willy Street/east side scene more.

(x-post, agreed)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I should go there sometime. I just imagined it being dirty and industrial, but it sounds kind of cool.

I liked Madison. The parks and view of the buildings and water are beautiful on the drive in. The shops are cute, though a bit artsy in an 80s sort of way.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

a recent NYT What's Doing. Brady Street sounds interesting.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

That's cool that they mention Jazz in the Park, I did it for the first time last year with Mama Digdown's Brass Band and I get to do it again this year with a quartet.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha they listed Real Chili in that article. You can get into drunken oyster cracker fights. It's fun.

4 Words: Frozen Custard at Kopp's.

OTM. That stuff is addictive.

Kiersten has covered it well. Milwaukee's a great city. I love the lakefront. Of course it's quieter than Chicago, it's a much much smaller city. I like that about it, actually.

Also, when the wind is blowing in the right direction, everything smells like brewery.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I just acquired a massive craving for a Kopp's fish sandwich.

I think on my week off I should do things that I never actually did while living in Milwaukee, like take a brewery tour and go to the art museum.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan, you totally have to! You should go on the Lakefront Brewery tour. That's the one I mentioned upthread. The only thing that sucks about the tour is that they have Bernie Brewer's old slide into the giant beer mug, and it just sits there and makes you want to slide down it so, so bad, but they won't let you( batting eyelashes doesn't even help) because some bitch cut her hand on it or something and tried to sue. I think I remember the Miller tour being pretty fun, too, but you don't get as much free stuff.
And you should also get drunk and go to the Domes and watch how excited old people get over exotic plants.
Let me know when you're going to be here, anyway. We can go to Art Smart's Dart Mart and buy Shit in a Can. Or something.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan, Saturdays are optimum for Lakefront. Riverwest shows are happening, although the Machines are out of town til the 11th.

Camtron (Cameron), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I'm happy that Milwaukee is finally getting the props it deserves.

Camtron (Cameron), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

That's too bad they'll be out of town when I'll be in town. We should definitely hit up a brewery, museum, show, and bar either on a Saturday or a weekday if you have off (Kirsten too!).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm game.

Camtron (Cameron), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

milwaukee is good
madison is good as well
(all i have to say)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be up for a fun tourist day. When are you going to be in town, exactly?

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

We should totally have a Milwaukee FAP.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay!

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Road trip!

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, I think I have a jazz gig in Milwaukee on the 29th, so I'll definitely be in town most of that day. Besides that, I'm guessing June 1st and 5th are likely options.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss road trips to Milwaukee. : (

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, good. I will be in town. Are you playing at the Nomad again?

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Where are you playing on the 29th, and you should let me know about Saturday, it's gonna be a great show.

x-post This FAP should happen.

Camtron (Cameron), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Missing road trips to Milwaukee means time for a road trip to Milwaukee. Come drink with us!

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, some bar dowtown, with Ryan's group. Can't remember the name, I'll find out.

This Saturday - Uncertain. Probably not.
FAP - Hell yeah.

(x-post)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

milwaukee rules because mark mcmarkelson lives in that blue building downtown. remember, kirsten?

oh and kirsten lives there, too!

mandee, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the road trip from NYC is considerably longer than the one from Chicago, so I can't.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god, I'd forgotten all about Mark McMarkelson! I should pay him a visit.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to go back to Milwaukee solely to go shopping for one of those puffy vests with Kirsten.

mandee, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Come back, Mandee! There are so many hilarious long-haired 70s cover bands we haven't seen!

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Milwaukee is great, it's Chicago's finest suburb

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear!, you are so off
the money it's not funny.
Hey I made a rhyme.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah we all know Harvey is Chicago's best suburb.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Milwaukee's okay
it has some good citizens
such as this fellow
http://www.angelfire.com/pokemon2/rabidbaboon/selig2.jpg

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

milwaukee sounds amazing. i want to go, now.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i would be game for a milwaukee fap, i mean, i drove down to lexington, kentucky for a frigging zombies show.

you cant put anything past me.

todd swiss (eliti), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yippee! I think we should plan one.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Aren't we in the midst of planning?

Camtron (Cameron), Thursday, 13 May 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

just name a date and i will try to make it... i, however cant make it from may 20-24.

todd swiss (eliti), Thursday, 13 May 2004 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

And Sarah and I can't come the last week of May (until the 30th) because her mom will be in town. But maybe Memorial Day weekend or sometime in June?

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Do they still have that festival in Milwaukee in June where bands play for free in all of those parks along the river that goes through the city? I was there a few years back during the festival, the city definitely didn't look empty then. It was packed. Also, you could walk around outside drinking beers and no police would even look twice at you. I liked Milwaukee. Madison is nice (I lived there last summer), but a little too small and a little too upscale for my tastes, though the bike lanes and trails are great.

webcrack (music=crack), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I was walking down the street one night in Milwaukee and a carload of girls came by and catcalled at me like you would expect from construction workers. It was funny as hell.

webcrack (music=crack), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're talking about Riversplash, yeah, we do.

Chris F. (servoret), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan, you're playing jazz the same night that the Frogs are playing at the Cactus Club? What time is your show that night?

Chris F. (servoret), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, there's a lot going on that night. Apparently I'm playing 8:30 - 12:30 at John Hawk's Pub, which I've never been to. It's on Wisconsin Ave. on the river, it looks like.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there any restaurants honouring Jeffrey Dahmer? Dahmer's Diner?

Charles Dexter (Holey), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh weird, I didn't know John Hawk's had live music. It has a nice patio on the river, though. Anyway, I'm going to try to be there. My boyfriend's birthday is that weekend, but it's on Friday and he might want to hang out and have BUDDY TIME or something on Saturday anyway.

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

mannnn, i wanna go to milwaukee fap. but it looks like my BIG SUMMER TRIP will be to nashville this year. (big=3 days)

mandee, Friday, 14 May 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool! I'm sure Camtron will be there too. Right, Cam? :>

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 May 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Why the hell not, I haven't been to John Hawks since... you, me, and Anna ended up there one evening for no apparent reason. I forgot about that until just now.

Camtron (Cameron), Friday, 14 May 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
FYI, my gig at John Hawk's tonight got cancelled (well, rescheduled to next month because of some double booking or something). I'm still planning on coming down this week for brewery/museum/drinking fun though.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 29 May 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, I showed up anyway and had a good time. My buddy that I went with was very happy with the band that played in your stead-- they played "Cantaloupe Island" for him and were pretty good. When are you actually playing, then?

Chris F. (servoret), Sunday, 30 May 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Madison is nice (I lived there last summer), but a little too small and a little too upscale for my tastes, though the bike lanes and trails are great.

we are too small yes
"upscale" is true only if
you just stay downtown

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 30 May 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, man, I'm glad you had a good time Chris. I think we're playing the last Saturday in June, I'll check it out. I'm doing Jazz in the Park in a couple weeks too, the 17th I think.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 30 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

hey jordan my friend
how was le tigre friday?
I could not make it

because plans got changed
now me and Jeff are seeing
Soul Plane late tonite

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 30 May 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It was cool, both what I expected and not. I drank Rob Roys and whisky sour old-fashioned's, because it seemed like the thing to do there. We split around 11:00 before we could get kicked out for swearing, got some La Bamba's and went to bed.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 30 May 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I have class in the evening on the 17th, so Jazz in the Park is out for me. I'll try to make it for your show at John Hawk's, though. Try to see if you guys can get the management to turn off their big screen TV while you play-- it's right next to the stage and annoyed the shit out of me until I got a waiter to turn it off about halfway through the other band's set. Woulda done it sooner than that, but the bass player was watching it while he was playing, so I felt a little guilty about spoiling his fun.

Chris F. (servoret), Monday, 31 May 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan, I was looking in the Shepherd Express yesterday and I thought I saw something about your band playing at the festival on Locust Street this Sunday. I haven't been around here much lately because I just moved and haven't had my computer hooked up, but is that true?

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Bumping because most people in Wisconsin were probably at work when I posted that last one...?

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 11 June 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Kirsten, I never saw this! Yeah, we played at Locus Street Days, it was a nice time. Free Lakefront beer! FYI, I'm also doing Jazz in the Park tomorrow (the 17th) at Cathedral Park with a jazz quartet.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay, it's the Jordan Spam thread. Anyway, this Friday I really AM playing at John Hawk's Pub.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I should post this on the Green Bay thread, but since this one is revived...my sister will be moving to La Crosse (sp?), not in Green Bay.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only been to La Crosse once or twice, but it seemed quite nice.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops, wish I'd read that message about Jazz in the Park last week! There's no way that I'm going to make it to John Hawk's this Friday, either. Ah, well.

Chris F. (servoret), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

hi. i like never post on ile, but milwaukee dudes come see me open for !!! this sunday at mad planet. you bring the money, ill bring the positivity!

Camtron (Cameron), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm... Maybe I'll go see !!! after all.

Chris F. (servoret), Friday, 25 June 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweet, I wish I could go.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 25 June 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Is your band likely to play again at John Hawk's, Jordan?

Chris F. (servoret), Saturday, 26 June 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think so. There weren't that many people there because of Summerfest etc., but staff seemed pretty appreciative and said some things about asking us back.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 26 June 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

That's cool. Keep us posted. I'll try to make it down to your next gig, if I manage to find out about it in time.

Chris F. (servoret), Sunday, 27 June 2004 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

milwaukee has had 3 socialist mayors.

would i (jbr) like milwaukee?

bird-person-person (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 November 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

i know haikunym is going to big up madison here but i have a reason for wanting to know about milwaukee.

Yes.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 5 November 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

Wait, you like beer and rock n' roll, right?

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 5 November 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

bird-person-person (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 November 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

Attn Camtron and Chris F: my band is coming back to Onopa Brewery this Saturday night. If you don't have other plans, come on out!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

That 70s show location is in Wisconsin but isn´t Milwaukee? we had this discussion last weekend at home

olenska (olenska), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to Milwaukee this weekend to hang out with Camtron, but I was planning on coming home Saturday night.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Boo.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Sounds good actually. I have no plans as of yet.

And I'll try and get all the stuffy indie kids I know to step outside of their usual coke lined bar bathrooms to attend.

I liked Milwaukee. It has the best bookstore I've ever been to. But at least the part I was in seemed reasonable. I would like to go back and explore more.

My wife got into Marquette Law and so I think I might have to move here. I know nothing about it. Is it just a smaller, drunker, somewhat colder Chicago?

Back from Milwaukee. Fun times. Milwaukee seemed really, really quiet.

We did:

1. Went to a brewery...Lakeside? for a tour, but it was sold out, so we bought a couple beers and chatted with a very nice bartender who hinted that we should join the tour w/out paying. We found the group in the bowels of the brewery, and found that the guy who turned us away from the tour was leading it.

We hid behind a few tall guys, and Courtney and I were cutting up a little - pretending to kiss and taking pictures of the guys' butts (that was my doing). As I was showing Courtney the picture my beer slipped out of my hand and both the beer and camera crashed to the floor and sending the battery and memory card flying, and soaking my sleeve, the camera, and most off all, the butt that I had just photographed. The guys were very nice, and they laughed a lot and assured us all was OK.

We LOLed and tried to sneak out, but the tour leader noticed us again. We went back and chatted w/ the nice bartender.

2. Went to Wild Hop and ate maybe the best nachos we've ever had (w/ buffalo meat).

3. Walked around the lake a bit.

4. Went to the casino and lost a few bucks on nickel slots.

Very visually interesting town! Very beautiful in parts.

It is quiet. It is nice for a weekend getaway. If you're living there, you are close to all kinds of recreation for your leisure times. Also, it is nothing like Chicago, which is much ruder.

That's how excited I am to move here in August.

I was standing around before the start of the Labor Day march the other weekend and Mayor Barrett walks right up to my wife and me with his good left hand extended, all "hey, thanks for coming out." Have to admit I was a little starstruck. Took me a second to register where exactly on the TV I knew this guy from.

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 16:57 (sixteen years ago)

I absolutely despised living there in my angsty 20s. But I think it's a fine place to, er, settle down in one's slightly less angsty 30s. Haven't lived there in a while so I'm not sure if any of the below are still in biz but:

Fave bars are At Random (where Peg Bundy would go to meet her secret lover...amaaaazing decor and positively jaw-dropping drinks...share a Tiki Bowl with someone) and This Is It (where Al Bundy would go to meet his secret gay lover...VERY difficult to find even when you're standing right in front it @ 418 E. Wells Street)

Woodland Pattern Bookstore - tons of poetry books but I went for the art music vinyl (e.g. Joan LaBarbara, Robert Ashley, etc.) and the great monthly avant-garde films

The Cactus Club - fave place to see a band like my beloved BRMC (still open?)

Basilica of St. Josaphat - We lived LITERALLY across the street from this and never went in. :(

The Calatrava - Gorgeous but, um, you can't really put much art in it. Soooo Milwaukee. But the art museum is indeed lovely.

Atomic Records - Most of the record stores I loved are prolly gone but I'm sure this one is still going. Tad pricey but always found sooo much great shit in the Compilations section.

Food - The only thing I love about MKE over any other city I've lived in is the food. Your ass gets FED in Brew City! Plentiful and unpretentious for the most part. Love the Greek family restaurants! Jalisco's! Tres Hermanos! Grecian Delight! Shahrazad!

Lots of places that are fine to visit once (The Domes, Pabst Mansion [still open?]) but after that...

Vile, avoid like the plague, should be razed: Summerfest

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

Cactus Club is still open. Saw Neil Hamburger there last month (and dined at the booth next to him at Palomino before the show).

I'll have to stop in to At Random for an alcoholic goblet sometime. I've walked past it a number of times and would probably have mistook it for a public library if it didn't have the sign on the side.

I love how if you order a bloody mary in this town it is customary to be served with a High Life chaser. The cheddar and sausage garnish was less surprising.

eleven months pass...

hey, i'm pro'lly going to milwaukee for a few days in a few weeks.

any suggestions?

what are the best venues for live music? are there good milwaukee-area music and film calendars i can check out?

vintage stores? record stores? restaurants? parks?

by another name (amateurist), Sunday, 15 August 2010 06:00 (fifteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure literally every good record store in Milwaukee closed in the last couple of years. Beyond that, I dunno...

I don't know enough to make worthwhile recommendations about live music or vintage stores-- maybe some else here can help you out with that.

The Union Theater on the UW-Milwaukee campus usually shows interesting things but they don't publish their film calendar until school starts for the fall semester. Right now they're closed for the summer, and otherwise the only film venues of note are the Landmark theaters on the east side, which are vintage buildings and really pretty, but just show basic new arthouse releases. If you come between September 23rd and October 3rd, the 2010 Milwaukee Film Festival will be going on at different theaters around town, but they haven't released their calendar yet either.

Any park on Lake Michigan is basically pretty nice. Lake Park and Veterans Park on the lakefront north of the art museum are probably the ones most worth checking out for a tourist.

Restaurants, I dunno. Comet Cafe has good food and drinks but gets incredibly crowded on the weekends. I'd recommend eating fish fry somewhere if you're around on a Friday for the full Milwaukee experience. Also, get frozen custard somewhere, preferably either at a Kopp's location (where you can also enjoy a delicious cheeseburger with the works) or at Leon's on the south side. Jake's Deli makes really good corned beef sandwiches during lunch hours if you don't mind going to the inner city to get it.

What else... The Lakefront Brewery tour is the most fun brewery tour in town and they make the best beer too. If you're a beer snob, I'm pretty sure that the best bars for that are in the bar district along Kinnickinnic Avenue, including Sugar Maple and the Palm Tavern. The best liquor store in town is Discount Liquor on Oklahoma Avenue. Huge, cheap, and they have a really choice selection of beers. And, um, I guess that's it. Milwaukee is a pretty nice place to be when there's leaves on the trees, so enjoy, I guess!

We are coming upon the best time of the year to visit Milwaukee - between the end of the summer into early fall. What types of outdoor recreation are nearby, I can't remember?

i like barbecue ribs (u s steel), Sunday, 15 August 2010 10:57 (fifteen years ago)

I don't get out a ton, but there are a lot of parks with mountain bike trails in southeastern Wisconsin. Maybe the Kettle Moraine region would be the best for that? Or just go out for a drive and maybe go up a hiking trail to a lookout tower like the one by Sheboygan. Also muskie fishing or whatever on any of the lakes in the area. It's the one month of the year that Lake Michigan isn't too cold to swim in, so you could do that or go parasailing or rent a jetski at Veteran's Park. You can also rent rollerblades at Veteran's Park and go up and down all the parks by the beach on Lincoln Memorial Drive. Bradford Beach in Milwaukee has a ton of nets set up for beach volleyball that are open free to the public. Also there are a ton of good public golf courses in the area.

tricked by a toothless cobra, Sunday, 15 August 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

Well, I'm a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers began visiting here in the late 16th century.

This is a touristy thing but I thought the Pabst mansion was actually pretty impressive.

Also there's a massive used book store downtown. I don't remember what it's called but it shouldn't be that hard to find. MASSIVE.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 16 August 2010 13:10 (fifteen years ago)

If it's the book store I'm thinking of, it's godawful. The owner's a prick; the used vinyl is sealed with tape which ruins the jacket (they honestly think someone's going to make off with a $2 Sa-Fire record with no jacket???); and, worst of all, there's nothing to buy. It's full of disogranized junk, more a graveyard than a store (although the wiki above suggests that it's improved).

Atomic Records - Most of the record stores I loved are prolly gone but I'm sure this one is still going.

Ugh I should have done my research. Atomic closed six months before I wrote that! :( RIP. Here's a Popmatters requiem all about it.

Is Ren Books the same store that has an offshoot in the airport??? Because I love that place and wish I could fly through there EVERY SINGLE TIME I FLY AT ALL.

Also the Milwaukee airport has a bar with a smoking fishbowl/area right next to it, so you can take your beer in and smoke INSIDE the damn airport.

I attended a summer college program there in 1993, when I was 15. I made friends with these crazy punk dudes & we snuck out of the dorms one night & saw a triple bill of Ed Hall, Flipper & The Dwarves. It was one of the best shows ever!

Also there's a massive used book store downtown.

I guess you were talking about Renaissance Books, but speaking of massive used bookstores in downtown Milwaukee, there's also Downtown Books, which is on Wisconsin Avenue east of Water Street and has a much better used comic book selection than Ren Books does.

Also, the UWM Union Theatre just mailed out their fall 2010 film calendar. Hopefully they'll update their website pretty soon. Lourdes, Trash Humpers, the films of Bruce Conner-- any of this sound interesting? Also, mini Kurosawa fest at the end of September.

tricked by a toothless cobra, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 02:43 (fifteen years ago)

I love that there IS a used bookstore in the airport, but I find their prices weirdly high and never actually buy anything there.

The Milwaukee Art Museum is great -- as you'd expect from Milwaukee, some good German Expressionism in the permanent collection, and as you might not expect, some good, weird folk art too.

I have always heard good things about Serbian food there, esp. Three Brothers, but have never been. I like the Polish restaurant in the Public Market.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 02:59 (fifteen years ago)

Endorsing the art museum, with its flapping wings and fun and manageable yet extensive collection. The public market had a great lobster dinner (I know, not exactly local fare) for $12. Waterpark in the Hilton Hotel was great for kids and isn't just for hotel guests.

ljubljana, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:48 (fifteen years ago)

The Expressionist print room is my favorite part of the art museum by far. They have a gazillion of them in the collection and rotate them out on a regular basis.

I live about a half hour south of Milwaukee and have really been enjoying getting to know more about it after years basically ignoring it while living in Chicago and Minneapolis. The art museum is very good and compact enough to pretty much see it all with little stress. There's a lot of food and drink to be had in the Historic 3rd Ward and Bay View neighborhoods, as well as record shops and small venues and such. The close-in burbs have some good stuff as well in my experience.
