Is the speed increases in RAM and CPU really worth it? I don't need a SuperDrive also.

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the powerbook has a faster system bus as well. However, right now, for general computing, (i.e. not music maqking or video production) it comes down to wether you prefer shiny plastic or not so shiny aluminium.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the ibook is more physically durable, the powerbook has a little more UMPH to it

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

iBooks are so unphysically durable it's not funny. I'm quite careless though but not rude.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

well all laptops are unphysically durable, the ibook is less unphysically durable than the powerbook. whew.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post

Or my iBook is [was :( ].

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, I'm not going to be doing anything *that* cpu intensive other than some occasional compilation of moderately sized programs(actually I build stuff all the time... :/), running big Java progams, maybe some realtime sound mixing stuff and maybe some light graphics stuff.

the powerbook is 4.6 pounds
the ibook is 4.9

I'll probably be hoofing this around by bike so durability, size and weight matter. Hmmm..... cozen, what happeend? Anyone have any links about this?

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and adding Airport extreme to the iBook brings it to $1198

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

iBooks can be tiny. Plus I am in love with the girl who sits upstairs with a tiny one.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

jon:

i'm actually in the same position. choosing between ibook/powerbook for law school in the fall. i'm going with the ibook, because it's $1099 and i will keep my dual g4 desktop at home. not trying to replace that.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahh, it just feels so flimsy now - there are slight (hairline gaps) between the casing parts, the little rests (plastic small mats, in the four corners of the bottom) come out and leave the bottom uneven, the plastic on the top corners of the lid (which make sure the screen doesn't touch the keyboard) break off easily, and overall it just feels like it could break. The weight doesn't help: giving it a constant feelign that it'll drop to its own suicide. Also my screen starting blinking out and got to the point where it ws making me pretty angry and het-up when I ws trying to write (suzy ws reporting a similar problems with hers.) I've had other problems. Doesn't stay gorgeous for too long either as the resin scuffs up REAL NICE REAL QUICKLY (but that doesn't bother me so much, tbh.)

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No mac. Yes Gobook.

http://www.itronix.com/products/notebooks/gobookmax.asp

This thing is indestructable...i got to demo one at FOSE last year.

ITs not a Mac though...

Spinktor, Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And I haven't really even been lugging it about so much (especially not since I installed Panther and all I get is 20 minutes at full charge.)

Still love it though. : /

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

cozen, what generation iBook was that? Also, Panther messes up battery life wtf? Is there any good solution to get reasonable battery life.
How big/heavy is the AC adapter?

Spinktor, those things look pricey. Also, I ****need**** a UNIX environment.

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

replacement ibook batteries aren't that expensive.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i have an older iBook. i love the machine, but the factory included RAM is really puny, like 128 or some such nonsense. so that would be a consideration, except that the iBook and the powerbook have the same RAM(!)

Also, the harddrive is small on the iBook, only 30GB. That's just not going to cut-it. I ended up buying a 120GB external hard drive. so you might want to consider the advantage of having that extra 30GB on the powerbook.

I love my iBook by the way.

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

They are guaranteed to still work after like 5 drops onto concrete from like 10-feet. And you can load linux on them, of course. Close enough.

But yeah, they are expensive. There is a cheaper version, not as beefy. Water/sand/robot proof.

Spinktor, Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm wondering about replacing.

I think my iBook is the penultimate generation model but I'm not entirely sure. The AC adaptor isn't that heavy and rolls up nice and neat.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 20 May 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

pb: 50-watt-hour lithium-ion battery (with integrated charge indicator LEDs) providing up to 5 hours of battery life (12-inch models)

vs.

iBook G4 with 12.1-inch display: 50-watt-hour lithium-ion battery provides up to 6 hours of battery life on a single charge (1)

The ability to hook up an external display and use that to extend my desktop on the PB is exciting!

Yea, if I'm going to replace my desktop with this, I think I will need the 60 gigs of space.

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm, with all the upgrades I'd want to the iBook it'd be $1,373.00 (without edu discount). I think I better go for the powerbook.

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

With education discount

powerbook with 512 megz of ram: $1,489.00
ibook decked out: $1,240.00

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

jon, don't order the RAM from apple. get it from crucial.com and you will save money.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Also my screen starting blinking out and got to the point where it ws making me pretty angry and het-up when I ws trying to write (suzy ws reporting a similar problems with hers.)

Everyone I know with a white iBook has had this problem. A bad connection between the screen and the rest of the machine means it starts blanking at all but a few angles. My flatmate got hers replaced under guarantee. Mine is a 2001 model, though, and developed the problem later. Here's what's wrong with mine:

*Gone through about four power cables. They rip at the slightest tweak.
* Screen only works at one specific angle, even vibrations can make it blank out.
* Several keys don't work: I use a shareware route-around and re-assign function keys.
* The CD drive is completely kaput.
* Battery life is down to about 20 minutes.
* It runs Jaguar pretty slow.
* Only 9 gig hard disk! Everything has to be kept on USB external drive. Firewire external drive I bought in Japan turned out not to work with the iBook!
* Cracks all over the lid: it looks like thawing ice.

I will replace it with a new one. In fact, I went to buy one today, before discovering that Berlin has some obscure bank holiday Thursday thing going.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty, thanx! That is a huge savingz! Wow, I might just end up buying an addtional 512 megz!

Momus, have you heard if people have any of these problems with the Powerbook? Yours is a G3 right?

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Jon, Jon, you're so fickle, first the big ups on the L1Nu><, then the Windoze CD questions now this! Anyhow, if I recall correctly, the Powerbook is the better choice as well if you want more ports 'n' such, because I think the iBook is pretty light on connectors.

* Battery life is down to about 20 minutes.
That's pretty typical with any notebook battery if it's three years old. My Toshiba battery cakked after about 2 years and a no-name notebook's battery did the same. It's my least favourite thing about notebooks, really.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, my 486 laptop is all but useless now because of that!

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Momus, have you heard if people have any of these problems with the Powerbook? Yours is a G3 right?

It's just the iBook, I think. The 12", specifically. The build quality on the old clamshell iBook was vastly superior. Much more robust. No doubt the Powerbook is better. Yes, mine is a G3. I will be replacing it with a G4 and just hope they've resolved the screen issue. As for the flimsy power cable, they now just give you the option of ordering several when you buy the machine. It must be a nice little earner for them, when new ones are $70 a pop.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure third parties will sell power cables (are you talking about just the cable part and not the whole AC thingee).

What is your reason for getting another iBook rather than the Powerbook. I'm sure there will be more resale value for PBs.

24 hours with the King of Snake. (SNAKE!) (ex machina), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Obscure Thursday Bank Holiday thing".

That'll be Ascention day, then.

In a country where they pay church tax, it isn't all that surprising that it's a public holiday.

(x-post with lots of things actually related to the thread topic)

___ (___), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure third parties will sell power cables

Oh, yes. But they fail too. Sick of the Apple string-cables, I bought one from Madsonline. It lasted a bit longer, but also frayed just beyond the heavy duty metal plug.

What is your reason for getting another iBook rather than the Powerbook. I'm sure there will be more resale value for PBs.

I never resell. I just work them into the ground then throw them away or use them for a doorstop or a CD player or something. (Literally what my orange clamshell is now doing.)

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 20 May 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The iBook sounds like a major lemon. I think my only hope is the 3 year apple care protection, so they can give me a new one when it shorts out.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I LOVE my Powerbook.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

me too!!

(ps the new g4 ibooks are apparently not lemons)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

ahh my apple dorkery shall never die

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 21 May 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

you still love the iBook though right, momus?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still not sure what this screen issue is. My power cable has broken twice and the shop has replaced it free each time; my logic board fritzed out several times (I think I'm on my 6th one?) and they keep replacing it -- this was a problem with a certain era of iBook (mine is from Feb 2003). The video chip is on the logic board but I'm not sure that's the problem you're describing.

Jon, the iBook doesn't have an audio IN port, and the dongly things you can get (USB inputs) are annoying. That might or might not matter to you.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah the main reason we got the Powerbook over the iBook is the audio line-in. Handy for recording music and such.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Whoa, no audio line in! I'm looking at getting a powerbook. Any truth to the rumors of a price drop on 6/28?

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Monday, 14 June 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

unlikely to be a price drop, unless they release new product which is unlikely.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

well are they going to do anything to the machines? like spec bump them? (bigger hds?)

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the last spec bump was april 19th this year, so unlikey, but its probably worth waiting anyway.

i've got a $60 USB "dongly thing" for my PB and it's fine, RCAs in and RCAs out

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

of course what i really want is a real 2nd sound card, so i can do music stuff and then use the built-in sound card for headphone cue

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, maybe i can do that already

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracer, yeah I'm going to be getting a usb audio thingy for that reason

*ROGERING GEAR!'S ROOMIE* (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

jon, check the iMic.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What I use for djing with audio preview is an audiotrack maya. It doesn't explicitly support mac but OS X core audio picks up all 6 audio outputs no problems.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the iMic just mic-level ins, no? i imagine jon wants line-level. if you want both though, jon, there's some really good roland gear that's rock-solid pro stuff and even has like XLR inputs and shit. and is less than $200. or this Ed palaver.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the iMic supports both

some of those edirol thingies don't work with digital performer

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i would recommend getting an M-AUDIO OZONE. i love mines.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Does the 12" PB have an audio mini-jack? I would like to get a hold of those cube Apple speakers, but they don't work via USB or headphone jack.

Ghostface Threadkillah (calstars), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Audio

* Audio line in (minijack)
* Headphone out (minijack)
* Built-in stereo speakers with midrange-enhancing third speaker (12-inch and 15-inch models)
* Two built-in stereo speakers (17-inch model)
* Internal omnidirectional microphone

*ROGERING GEAR!'S ROOMIE* (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought a minijack WAS a headphone jack..?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

it is

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a special audio minijack on some Macs apparently that is just for those speakers. I know it was on the Cube and I think the new imacs have them too. The 12 PB doesn't though, I looked it up on google.

Ghostface Threadkillah (calstars), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Player Piano Gamelan (ex machina), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

godmanit I want them to relese something like a vaio x505 or tr5mp. Apple really needs a sub notebook so I can buy one. WOn't happen though. There have been some 'screenshots' of tiger floating around the web showing extra widgets, some clever extra scripting gubbins but nothing to set the world alight. Expect better x11 integration, at the very outside Cocoa for Linux (very outside); formal launch of xgrid, maybe xgrid redering in FCP, Shake and Motion. Hardware likely to be limited to new displays and a recap on things like airport express, reinforced iTunes etc.

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

what do you mean by sub notebook?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

sub notebook????

Player Piano Gamelan (ex machina), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

smaller and thinner than the 12" powerbook/iBook

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/11/14/sony_launches_0_4in_thick/

I'm considering getting a c1ve on ebay to tide me over what with my pbg3 out of action.

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

how much smaller can it get?!?!?! any smaller and the keyboard is worthless....

Player Piano Gamelan (ex machina), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just today taken delivery of a new 1GhZ 14" iBook, 60gig hard drive, DVD, etc etc. This is my first ILX post with it, in fact. Despite the fact that the keyboard is German, which'll take some getting used to, I'm in 7th heaven. Big bright clear screen, much faster than my wrecked little 12" 500MhZ of course, just a big white chunk of happiness.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(I was a bit pissed off that you can't use the old Airport cards with the new G4s, though.)

Momus (Momus), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you doing that well financially that you can afford to replace one that often?

Player Piano Gamelan (ex machina), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

what you doing with the old one? Talk to suzy about it.

I just played with that x505 at lunch time the keyboard is suprisingly good

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been three long years since my last purchase, and the old one is so broken. I mean, if Suzy is really desperate it might be worth a couple hundred quid, but this is what doesn't work:

Keyboard (several letters bust, replaced by function keys)
Screen (has to be at exact angle to work, very annoying; also dim)
CD drive (kaput)

Momus (Momus), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

what did you do to the poor thing? am i to expect my powerbook to be in such a sorry state so soon!?@!?

Player Piano Gamelan (ex machina), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe it could be used to make a mutat mac with all of the bit from dead powerbooks/iBooks we have lying around the place.

Ed (dali), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been around the world dangling from my neck in a soft bag with no case. It's had to sit on the loo while I posted to ILX from the bath.

Mutat Mac is difficult, because they keep changing the spec. The old clamshell iBook keyboard doesn't fit the white iBook, f'rinstnace, and now the Airport architecture has all changed too. Same with the power cables. They do it on purpose.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

If they do it on purpose, I wager it is to confound 3rd party replacement parts.

Player Piano Gamelan (ex machina), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Momus, the screen/angle problem may be related to either the logic board, the harddrive, the lack of the latest OS, or all three. In any case, Apple has just extended its logic board replacement warranty to all iBooks, and the logic board seems to be the most directly related to the screen/angle/blackout/backlight problem. They'll upgrade the OS for free, too. Mine's in the shop getting fixed as we speak, gratis, so I'll let you know how it turns out

And when in doubt, just max out on however much RAM your iBook can handle, since OSX eats a lot of it up. You'll all be happier.

(BTW, I've dropped my iBook three times, and it still works like a charm, other than the manufacturing flaw that Apple's fixing).

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the iBook is supposed to be more rugged than the Powerbook

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the screen problem has been addressed by apple who started a program of 'recall' to fix some chip. my uncle explained this, quite often the connectors, there are loads, on moving the iBook around break. the earlier models' screens broke due to the video-cable or whatever being run through the hinge at the back of the iBook being worn and ragged.

mine is all fixed now and I'm in love.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 28 June 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

cozen,
My screen on the 12" ibook I'm using now used to black out entirely and they replaced the whole thing because of factory default. The repairs cost more than the computer, so everyone should get applecare even if it costs a bunch right now. Otherwise, I love the size, though I understand how it feels like it might break. Mine has been knocked around post-repair and is still fine.

iSkin ProTouch PB Keyboard Protector for PowerBook/iBook

All the important electronics that make your iBook or PowerBook G4 tick are under the keyboard. If anything gets in between your keys, it poses a serious threat to your computer's health. If you love your iBook or PowerBook G4, you will want to protect it against everyday hazards caused by spills, dirt, crumbs and other unwanted elements. The ProTouch PB is precisely molded to fit and protect your keyboard by creating a protective barrier without restricting use of the keyboard

What are the differences in sound capabilities re: speakers? because a friend of mine attempted to articulate them to me but I wasn't sure what he was on about. Mainly that the powerbook could run non-powered speakers (so, can you just hook monitors up to it and be ready to go?), and that the ibook did not have this capability, and you needed to have powered speakers?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

A proper HiFi. My cyrus 1, Rogers LS 6 combination does me proud. If you do just want powered speakers though, some of thehigh end creative labs ones are very very good. A friend recently got their top end 5.1 surround rig and its as good as a home cinema rig 2 or 3 times the price.

Other than the new Airport architecture thing, I've been pissed off that I have to choose a DVD region, and can only switch five times in the life of the laptop. But there does seem to be a solution: to play DVDs through VLC rather than the Apple DVD player software.

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Friday, 6 August 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

protective sleeve from http://www.radtech.us

not much cushioning, though. check out their hard case too, it has locking ability. you don't need a keyboard, but check out the bluetooth mouse.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok mine is the slightly older PBG4/1GHz model. The 256MB it comes with is apparently PC2100 but the manual says upgrades should be PC2700, does that make sense? Yeah, but it's a very well-made one. Aaron W. advised me to get it, after a mutual techie friend of ours said it was the best around. I'm using it as my backup drive. I also have one of those 250 gig Lacie Porsche drives. What's awesome is that I leave the Lacie at home, and have the Mercury one hooked up to my work computer. 220 gigs of music whereever I go!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I said above, but it's not taking cds in any more. You can push the cd in almost all the way, but the cd player doesn't 'grab' it and pull it in. I can hear it making these whirring noises like it's trying to work but nope. I followed all the shitty advice on the Apple website.

na (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

So if I, a person with little technical knowledge, were to open up my Powerbook with the intention of seeing if there was anything really obvious keeping my cd drive from working (e.g., huge globs of peanut butter, wasp's nest, etc.), what would be the odds that I would fuck things up even more?

The iBook sounds like a major lemon. I think my only hope is the 3 year apple care protection, so they can give me a new one when it shorts out.

can you add an airport card later? or is that more expensive? i won't need one now, but i might want one eventually.

If you need something now, then you have to deal with what's on the table today.

However, if you don't NEED need it, you'll feel a lot better waiting than you will when the new update comes, knowing you just missed it. That's my advice.

BTW, if you're just waiting for Tiger, it's not worth the wait until it gets insanely close. Hardware may be another story. Just be heads up that an OS update is coming in early '05 and will cost about $129, and you'll be cool.

Oh, and totally second the RAM thing - get as little from Apple as you can, and as much from a good retailer as you can. I highly recommend Crucial (www.crucial.com).

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 27 September 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I would say get the iBook as juice as you can. The iBook is a warhorse. I doubt this 15" I'm typing this with is going to last nearly as long as my old model iBook. Apple is the fucking VW of personal computers, you drive them long enough you realize the better models are the cheaper ones.

TOMBOT, Monday, 27 September 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i could get an education discount through my mother, and i have a friend who works in a big ad agency and says he might be able to get me a good discount--i'll have to look into that.

do NOT buy RAM from apple.

don't you void the warranty if you add third party memory?

i'm thinking of just getting a pc, actually. i'd prefer a mac, but i actually do *need* a new computer now. i can't even open pdf files on this one, the modem keeps crapping out, the cd player doesn't work, keys are falling off the keyboard, etc. fuck a wallstreet powerbook.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

no you don't void the warranty... RAM is RAM.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck a wallstreet powerbook.

DO YOU SEE?!?!?!?

my caps lock has already come off too! I'm sticking to plastic from here on out!

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the "b" key on mine fell off so i just end up tapping the little spring underneath, one of these days that'll fall off too and i'll be all, "will you e my ay tomot?"

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i had this fucking thing repaired three times under the warranty and then, after that expired, probably spent upwards of $500 on repairs.

i'm tempted to get something cheap i can replace without regret when it craps out.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Make sure you get one that can run Mac OS 8.1 *at least*

i had a wallstreet powerbook until 2 weeks ago. i loved the thing until it met the unfortunate fate of hard drive failure. now i have an ibook [14 inch screen, blah blah] and its OK. im not feeling it just yet, i guess.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

get the ibook w the discount am, it's relatively cheap and will most likely serve you well

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

forgive me, but what is a "wall street powerbook"? Sounds cool!

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the black powerbook g3s IIRC

Free the Bee (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the first generation of black powerbooks, i think. i have the very earliest g3 powerbook (it doesn't have the slightly translucent keyboard of later models). i think it's a bit of a lemon.

i might borrow a computer to get me through grad apps, and then buy the new ibook when it comes out next year.... will keep everyone up to date! ;-)

I just placed an order for a 12" iBook and a 20gb iPod. Wheee!!

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 21 October 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I am about to order a 14" iBook and a 40GB iPod - EXTRA WHEEEEE!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 21 October 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

we'll be matching andrew, i got a 12" ibook and a 20gb ipod about a month ago. best money i've ever spent.

gem (trisk), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay!

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

my friends are all heartily sick of me raving about my lovely toys. they are totally functional AND BEAUTIFUL. you won't be sorry.

gem (trisk), Friday, 22 October 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The new iBooks make the lower end powerbooks look a little poor value. New Powerbooks in January.

Ed (dali), Friday, 22 October 2004 06:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i just don't think i need a powerbook. i only need a laptop for the most basic of computer uses (mail, web, create documents, play mp3s, etc), so an iBook is fine. i'm so glad i waited until this week - i was about to buy everything a couple weeks ago, but then got lazy and didn't do it. anyway, i check the apple UK site this week and the new ibooks are on there, and come bundled with the stuff i was going to have to add before. in other words - a better deal! yay!

i'm still a bit panicked about making THE SWITCH from pc, but i'm sure i'll cope. i hope i have the same happy buzz as gem (although i suspect you are a 'mac type' arleady)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 22 October 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

no rob, i just made 'the switch' from PC too. it has been tricky learning the new keyboard shortcuts and whathaveyou but i love my ibook. i bought a book called 'the switcher's guide' or some such to help me.

gem (trisk), Friday, 22 October 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

that is a damn fine idea - i should look into getting some sort of 'mac tips for newbies' book or somesuch too...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 22 October 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i will have a look at my book when i get home and let you know its name and author, i found it very helpful. also i looked up 'keyboard shortcuts' in help on my new ibook and printed them out, i've learned some new ones that work on my pc at work too! everyone's a winner.

gem (trisk), Friday, 22 October 2004 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks gem! i can't wait to start raving about my new toys...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 22 October 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It is called "Macintosh Switcher's Guide" by Robert Standefer, 2004, Wordware Publishing Inc. Good Luck!

gem (trisk), Saturday, 23 October 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought an iBook because the Powerbook is out of my price range. I just can't justify spending that much on a new laptop. I know I'll still probably feel annoyed in January when the new Powerbooks come out, but I'm glad I'm buying just as the new iBooks have been released - guaranteed maximum tech longevity.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 23 October 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i bought an ibook because i knew it would be totally sufficient for my use - i couldn't justify the extra $$

Is anything happening soon with ibooks/powerbooks?

estela (estela), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

They're so useful, I'm sure things are happening all the time with them!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Not hat I know of, estela. There'll probably be another specs upgrade over the next few months, but if you're considering holding off in lieu of better things on the horizon I'd say just buy one now!

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a bit odd that they weren't updated in January, since it's been nearly a year since the last upgrade. So surely they'll be updated in April (or whenever the next confab is). Check out http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

uhhh dude, they're upgrading powerbook REALLY SOON!!!!

read 1 mac rumors site; shortages of pbook.

ps - having a pbook is great; i win wang size with my ibook using friend even though he has a 17"

Reviewer: Sir Potomus (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks everyone. I'll probably go ahead and get an ibook if there's going to be no changes with them soon. I can't really justify the extra expense of a powerbook for me even though I'd love to have one.

Sir Potomus, that means you win wang size with me as well!

estela (estela), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The iBooks are a really good deal right now anyway.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, is there any reason I shouldn't get an ibook for $950 tomorrow? I'm looking for a good argument against -- otherwise it's basuckly a done deal.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

gem (trisk), Sunday, 15 May 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Expect new product announcements at WWDC 15th of next month although some might not be available till later in the summer. Especially iBooks which normally get a refresh for the back to school season.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 15 May 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

Actually, iBooks were last updated october last year and are long overdue for a refresh.

http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

However the fact that there's very little difference between the iBooks and Powerbooks right now and hasn't been for some time means there has to be a pretty big update to the powerbooks for the iBooks to move on. There's a big problem in that the processor and bus technology in both the PowerBook and iBook is ancient with not a lot to replace it. G% doesn't seem ready for the laptop and Apple don't seem to want to use the very good dual core G4 class Freescale e600 based chips as their bus technology is significantly different from the G5.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 15 May 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

i need a new laptop by august; should i wait until mid-july to see if a new ibook arrives? or just buy one now?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 15 May 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

i'd wait for a g5 ibook. not that it'll appear soon... but i'd rather wait...

my isync is completely fuxored after installing tiger. bastard. i tried to download it from my mac account (reinstall it) but it doesn't work as the one on there'sthe old one. SIGH

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Sunday, 15 May 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

I'd wait till mid-july.

G5 iBook is a long long way off, g5 powerbook still doesn't seem that close.

p-p-p-powerbook!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to get a laptop in july. no use talking me out of it: i need one by august, and even if superduperbook were to come out on august 30, i'd need one before that.

my cap is about $2,000, so i figured on getting an ibook w/512 MB RAM and an 80 GB HD.

any suggestions to the contrary? should i up the RAM even more? any pressing reason to get a powerbook 15" instead (for about $500 more)?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 18 June 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

i should note that i get the education discount.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 18 June 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

also i have an old walstreet powerbook w/no cd burner, no usb (just the old scsi ports).... any ideas on the cheapest way to get stuff off of the hd from that machine onto a new mac? ( i'm not gonna buy a usb floppy drive or a zip drive just to do this.)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 18 June 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

The iBook is plenty fast for 90% of what you'll end up using it for, for sure. But when in doubt. just max the RAM. It makes everything run better, especially since OSX alone eats up so much of that memory.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

amateurist the best way (if you have high-speed) is probably to just stuff all your files into a zip or sit file and email/yousendit to yourself!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 18 June 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

but i don't have internet access on my old laptop!! i don't think my dsl is even compatible with OS 9 (O!S!9!)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 18 June 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

i'm sure you can work it out if you have an ethernet port in your old laptop.

doesn't mac os 9 have a built-in internet connect program?

if not... what kind of "outs" does your computer have? there's no disk drive, no cd burner, no usb... how did you used to get stuff off your computer?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 18 June 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

i have a floppy drive (now broken) and a scsi zip drive.... but i'd need a usb zip drive to get that stuff onto my new laptop. which is not worth buying.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 18 June 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

maybe you could go to a copy shop/computer lab place and borrow/rent one. i'm sure a lot of places that rent computer time by the hour have usb drives, you could probably just get a console for 30 mins and hook the usb zip drive into your superduperbook.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 18 June 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

if you go to a mac dealer/servicer they should be able to tranfer the stuff on to your new for a relatively low cost.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

also i hope the sequal to the powerbook is called the superduperbook.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

http://www.applelinks.com/p5/index.php/more/connecting_two_macs_using_an_ethernet_crossover_cable/

ethernet. crossover. cable. this has instrux for os9. for the new powerbook running OS10 you will obv have to do something slightly different, but this ought to get you most of the way there.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 June 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

samsung x50 is everything that the 15" powerbook should be (work are buying them at the moment, hopefully I get one). High res widescreen, PCIe 16x ATI X600 graphic, 1gig ram, 2Ghz, 533Mhz system bus, plays DVDs without booting into the OS. 2.4kg. This is what Apple Intel laptops have to kick out of the park.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

plays DVDs without booting into the OS

but i never shut my powerbook down anyway, so it's already booted :)

seriously, though: yes, you're right. indeed, by the time we see the apple intel machines, things will have moved on even more. they are going to have to be shit-hot.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

the not booting movie playing is good for plane rides, no cpu hosing the battery.
