One of my student workers, Hafsa Kaka. Who is incredibly cheerful and well-motivated, bless her! And it *is* a cool name!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I knew a guy named Nadir in school. I always thought that was so sad.

ALly, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, his last name was Noir. Nadir Noir.

ALly, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The funny thing about Lockhart is that he's this kind of weedy-grin computer nerd. And everybody calls him "Lock" anyway which kind of detracts. Maybe he's protecting his superhero identity.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nadir Noir is the greatest name I've ever heard! I hope he was a huge goth.

All of the unusual names I know of are really awful, like this girl I met whose name was Latrina. I was two seconds away from asking her if she had a brother named John and a sister name Toilette, but decided that it wouldn't be very nice, particularly since she was only 10 years old.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally McNally.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You'd have to be a goth if you were named Nadir Noir, wouldn't you? But I don't know if he became goth, he moved when we were 12. It's pronounced exactly how you'd think it was pronounced, too.

Ally, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was a dude in my class at school called Muhunthan Balasegaram, which was great (look!) cos it was hilarious watching teachers try to get to grips with it. The only better names in the whole school were either Sayannan Shrishanmugunathan or Patrick Fitzgibbon. FITZGIBBON!

DG, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I knew a short redhaired boy in grad school named Luke Kummer...

phil, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know a guy named Lockhart, and he's sort of a wiry computer guy...

I also know a lovely lady named Tinuviel.

marianna, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And I also know Thunder Storm.

marianna, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Marianna, does this Tinuviel live in Boston? I think she's friends with my cousin.

Kris, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does your Lockhart live in New York Marianna? Does he look both shifty and beatific all at once?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I knew a Kelly Honey, who fit her name perfectly. I now work with a Sterling Mock!

Tim, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A friend of mine in L.A. is called John Silver. I think it's definitely the best name out of all my friends. I've never told him that though.

There's a girl at work that I don't know all that well called Illuminata Taylor, but everyone just calls her Lumi.

Matt Couch.

rainy, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know if this counts, and I know the humour of it does have a lot to do with the cultural context but, the other day I had to do some (mumble mumble) administrative stuff for one of our clients whose first name just happened to be Manmeet. Fun Fact - if you laugh out loud when you're sitting alone at your desk, people will tend to look at you as if you're whacko.

Kim, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you're going to invoke Aborto the Dog, Brian, you must at least acknowledge his master, Fuckles the Clown.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Samson , and a wolfgang. One of my philosophy lecturers was a complete geographical feature: Heather Moorland, until she got married to a man whose surname is Dyke.

Menelaus Darcy, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omigod, I can't believe I forgot to say this story:

When I was four, I was taken to visit a friend of one of my grandparents whose name, honestly, was Peaches Eaton. My Dad introduced me to her, and instead of returning my polite greeting, she said in the voice of a screeching hag, "RAINY?????!!!!! That's a funny name!" and cackled very rudely. I was so humiliated and offended, my manners went out the window and I kicked her in the leg.

I was sent to sit in the car for the rest of the visit.

rainy, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hands down, my friend Fowzy Butt takes the cake. (His first name is pronounced "FAH-zee", like the Muppet bear.) He pulls the name off beautifully, and turns what would lead some people to a life of seclusion and self-loathing into an asset.

He's one of two Pakistani guitarists that was in my old band. The other, coincidentally enough, was named Nadir. It's pronounced NAH-dher, though.

I once knew a girl named Sargent Sargent, and a guy named Lincoln Ford.

Phil, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I though Nadir was a normal Indian name (although usually a surname)? I've known a few Nadirs.

I knew a guy whose name was something Latin like Stella Nova or Nova Filius(I hope it wasn't that because that sounds really girly, but I'm sure his name meant New Star or New Son or Star Son or whatever) anyway, everyone called him Jeremy.

I went to school with a guy called Zen Dane.

toraneko, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if names = destiny then ?? Where are They Now? Not wearing capes and fighting crime I'd bet. Shameful.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 1 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had a couple of dates with an Ariel Star Clapp - does that count?

Professionally, I have been in touch with Jenny Cockshatt and Linda J Wank.

Mathew Sebastian. Admittedly not very cool-sounding, but when you rearrange its letters you get cool phrases like "Beats meat in wash", "I am the swan beats", "We bathe Satanism", "I am the Satan's web", etc. etc.

Wow, that Molybdenum. Hard kid. BOOM

Just remembered: an artist named Rachel Elizabeth Goodnight.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is a bit dodgy, cos they'll probably read this and I'll look a right muppet, but anyway: Melody Butters, Farrah Butt, Leigh Hailstones, Judas Skelton-Robinson, Reuben Ganja Paris. I've always suspected the last one might be a wind up, but I'm assured it's legit.

Andrew Williams, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a friend of a friend whose name is Frampton. His first name, I mean.
This is mean, but in my high school, the girls who had kids when they were fifteen really could pick the names.. there was a Dylan Sebastian (after the character from 90210 and the singer from Skid Row), and a Mercedee Lane (i.e. Mercedes without the 's', no idea why).

daria gray, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There are chess players named Peter Butt and Semen Dvoiris.

By the way, my friend Fowzy Butt looks VERY much like Gareth.

Phil, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only time I ever hitchhiked I got in a car, overflowing with cigarette butts and windows rolled down - I was so nervous I actually asked if I could smoke! - and even though we were in Connecticut it turned out the woman was from Tennessee. She told me about her kids. One was named Dustin. She asked me who I thought he was named after. I said Dustin Hoffman. No, she almost sneered, "Dusty Roads - the wrestler!"

Nude Spock, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When I was at school, there was a memorial service for a teacher who had died and during it, they read out a list of all the other staff and pupils who had died in the last few years. Unfortunately, the very first name they read out was Amos Boner. My friends and I never heard any of the other names because of the effort involved in trying not to laugh.

A tragic tale really, but I like to think that Amos Boner gave his life so that others could laugh.

jamesmichaelward, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When my stepsister was a freshman at UofL in like 1985, her roommate was supposed to be Ojabberin Zayden Powpack. Of course, Ms. Powpack never showed up so we didn't get to see what she looked like.

hstencil, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Had a good friend named Pan0s Pappas (which sounds like a Thai-Frrench frozen toaster treat) and a school drama teacher named Chuck D!ck (the joke was "he certainly does!", although in point of fact I think he eventually got done for fiddling with feamle students).

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

A girl at the uni is called Foxy Demeanor. Which is just astonishing. I also know of a kid named Bibsy. Not a nickname.

Among about 25 people called to jury duty one day about a month ago was a woman named Latrina.

At my school there was a fellow named Morgan Mirvis. Also Amy Student, whose email username was, naturally, "astudent."

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

At my high school was a fellow named Udoiwood Udoiwood. Also a kid who was named after the town in which he was born, therefore: Evanston [whatever his last name was].

Finally as I have pointed out in an earlier thread there was a substitute teacher in my jr. high named Dick Seaman.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The least popular history teacher at my high school was Dick Manley (I always thought he'd do better for himself if he went by "Rich" -- when your last name's Manley and your first name can be shortened in like thirty-eight different ways, why pick Dick?) He was known to hit on recent graduates at the ski lodges.

... that's not a cool name, though. Oh, but the graduate advisor of the English dept. at my university is Peter Shock, porn star waiting to happen.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Cash Savage. The girl I wanted to *be* in highschool.

nellskies (minna), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Guy I was at school with was called Preston Gunn.

Funniest: I had a temp job where many of the staff were American expats. One was called Ricky Schafts and another Randy Bird. They were frequently called to reception over a tannoy, sometimes at the same time. They presumably never realised what "Ricky Schafts, Randy Bird in reception" sounded like to Brit ears.

ArfArf, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a Tom Morrow at my school. I kid you not.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 11 January 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i honestly don't remember. if galadriel had a sister in the books, that would've been it. i wasn't friends with the sister, so i forgot her name.

two of the weathermen here in L.A. are named Johnny Mountain and Dallas Raines. weird.

You ever know someone who tried to give themselves a cool name? I knew this kid in college named Trey, and we all thought that was a pretty good name, until it was discovered that he was a huge Phish fan and insisted that everyone call him Trey.

And people who are referred to by their initials aren't nearly as cool as they think they are. I know this fellow named D.K. who deserves a smackdown for being a smarmy fuck, and I blame his initials.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)
