new stoner comedy, featuring "the asian guy from _American Pie_" and "the indian guy from _Van Wilder_", and directed by "the white guy who did _Dude, Where's My Car?)_"
and they actually call them that in the trailer.
oh yeah, and it features Neil Patrick Harris....as "Neil Patrick Harris".

The title of the movie really offends me, the White Castle bit. More than anything because people don't actually crave White Castle.
And if you call this movie "subersive" I will rotate your tires without telling you.

" Its director is Danny Leiner, who made "Dude, Where's My Car?," and he seems at first to pick up more or less where that movie, or any of its illustrious predecessors going back to "Porky's," left off. An ex-frat boy type, with a roomy office in a New York high-rise, is finishing up his work week. His pal, immediately recognizable as the wilder half of a classic buddy-movie pair, shows up proposing a fun-filled weekend of babes, booze and bong hits. But what about that big report due on Monday? No problem: just dump it on the Korean guy in the far cubicle. Our hero is free to pursue the carefree debauchery that is his birthright.
Except, of course, that the pale-skinned frat boy type is not the hero at all. He and his friend (who happen to be played by the screenwriters, Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz) are walk-on doofuses who pretty much walk out of the movie, leaving it in the hands of that unassuming Korean guy, Harold."
It seems as if I am going to be eating crow as that actually sounds pretty witty.
I'm still hoping people get passed the race thing and judge the movie on it's merits -- if it turns out to be a big retarded gross out comedy I don't care who's being gross and stupid and forcing jokes. Still don't like the White Castle in the title.

I am also quite excited to see this. It's not to be sneezed at that the leads are both non-white... that's pretty significant. I hope it's a hit, even if it is a dumb gross-out comedy.
I'm not sure I buy Dan Savage's claim that "Road Trip" was progressive, though...

Here's Dan's actual quote:
Speaking of TAs fucking their students, has everyone seen the new Tom Green flick Road Trip? By way of an awkward segue, one of the characters in Road Trip is a TA who wants to fuck a student. (He comes to a bad end, which should please those who disapprove.) For a gross-out teen sex comedy, this movie is remarkably sex-positive. Unattractive people are shown having sex--fat black girl on top of skinny white guy--and while the shock of seeing the two of them rolling around plays as something of a sight gag, they're not held up to ridicule by other characters in the film. Indeed, no one questions their right to be sexual, or their attraction to each other. It's really heartwarming. As if that weren't revolutionary enough, Road Trip also features a girl who initiates kinky sex (videotaping what could be a one-night stand), and not only is she not punished or humiliated or dead (or all three) as is customary in teen sex comedies, but she winds up getting the guy in the end. And to top it all off, a studly straight boy gets finger-fucked and no fag jokes are cracked, and he's not made out to be any less studly or straight for enjoying it. In Road Trip, people aren't worried about what normal, good girls do, and ugly people get laid--it's like sex in real life. It's mind-blowing.

"On the surface, "Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle," due out Friday, is your average summer teen gross-out flick.
But behind the burps and potty humor is something remarkable: the first mainstream Hollywood comedy to star two Asian-American actors.
The buddy comedy genre is nothing new. What's novel is casting Asian or Asian-American men in starring roles other than martial arts masters.

which is of course a VERY flawed question - as it automatically sets up this false dichotomy. AHEM it assumes that minorities never are irreverent sex&fast food obsessed stoners in the first place - and considering the irony of who's authoring this post - as well as the large and increasingly visible subculture of minority youth (that was unfortunately distorted in the empty, posing caricatures of Better Luck Tommorrow) who go aginst parental expectations, it's basically meaningless. so ignore that question, perhaps, and ponder this one:
why would a "dumbing down," if it were, of any sort of character be necesary to render him or her more likable/accessible to the American (youth?) public in the first place? is American culture so deeply anti-intellectual to start with ? or is it just the appeal of seeing people do just as foolish things on screen as we do in the privacy of our station wagons ?

Dear Friends, Fans, Haters, Players, and True Money Makers,
Hey! This is Kal Penn (aka Kalpen Modi) and John Cho writing to encourage you to go see our upcoming comedy from NewLine Cinema, "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle," opening nationwide on July 30th. This film marks the first time amajor studio is releasing a project with two Asian American males as the leads. We don't have stereotypical accents,we don't passively tread through the story, we're not asexual or hypersexual, there are no martial arts scenes,one-dimensional cab driver segments. We play a couple of all-American guys who happen to be of Indian and Koreandescent. Our characters (Harold and Kumar) are post-collegiate buddies who get the munchies and end up going on theadventure of their lives as they set out to satisfy a spontaneous craving for White Castle burgers. Ebert and Roeperjust gave our movie "Two Thumbs Up"! We hope you will too. Read on.
The opening weekend for any film is extremely important. Studio executives (the people who make big decisions aboutmovies) track the numbers from that first weekend's ticket sales and make all kinds of decisions based on that data. They decide if they will add more screens to show a film, if they will spend more money in promoting it, if they willstart investing in a sequel... but most importantly, they decide if elements of the film work and whether they shoulddo it again. In our case, that means they will be asking, "Will a strong script and story succeed or fail with 2Asian American guys in non-stereotypical roles?". We personally think it will succeed, but we need your help! Thisfilm is our chance to prove that realistic, nonstereotypical depictions can make an audience have a blast, and takein enough money to make this happen in the future.
By buying a ticket to "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle", you aren't just gonna get to see a really funny moviewith two dudes who look like you. Nope. You're also going to be saying to media outlets, "I support accuraterepresentation of Asian Americans and would like to see more." You have the power to change things simply by buying aticket to a film that we believe you'll have fun watching anyway!
Please go to the theaters on the weekend of July 30th, and watch "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle". We look at this awesomeopportunity like we do voting in an election. Every movie ticket someone buys is a VOTE, and the cool part is, you'reallowed to vote as many times as you want. With your support of the film, we will show decision-makers in Hollywoodthat supporting movies like these is not only the right thing to do, but is also good business. We'll also show YOUwhat it's like to ride a cheetah, hang glide off a cliff, pick up a hitchhiking Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser),tell off a bunch of ignorant punks, get love interests, and sing Wilson Phillips at the top of our lungs.
So just hold on for one more... week, and check out the website at www.HaroldandKumar.com. This film opens theweekend of July 30th! Send this email to all of your friends. Throw parties. Order food. Make a night (orweekend) out of it and go see "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle"! This is a landmark opportunity for the AsianAmerican community, and we are proud to be the faces involved. With your support and the success of this film, wehope that it's only the beginning of many more Asian Americans on screen...
Enjoy the movie,
Kal Penn and John Cho"Kumar" and "Harold"

I have the same experience, but for the sake of charity to all mankind, I prefer to think of this as a food issue rather than a class issue. Because if I think of it as a class issue, I'll only get depressed about class in America and maybe capitalism in general. No one could ever argue that White Castle food should really be *eaten*.

This was really funny, way better than Dude, Where's My. Less repetitive crap masquerading as comedy. The only thing that fell flat was the EXTREME ATHLETES gang. Doogie's strippers routine played better in the commercial, but it was still funny.
