On this Thread, we apologize for Boorish ILXing at the Expense of Others

- I apologize to Hstencil for informing him I was looking forward to his wake as a retort for some snipey comment he'd made about me being a whiney, headstrong New Yorker.

- I apologize to Lauren for summarily turning my fangs on her after she quite clear-headedly came to Stence's defense (not that he needed any, but still...it was a nice and admirable thing for her to do.

- I apologize to Amateur!st for coming across like a dismissive prick on his recent thread about rockism. I didn't mean it to be snipey, but given other exchanges he and I have had in the past, it'd be perfectly understandable of him to interpret my comment that way.

I hope these apologies are acceptable to the individuals concerned. Anyone else want to clear the air?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 30 May 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i apologise for seemingly having less worthwhile to say these days thus spending most of my ILX energy being annoyed at other posters and criticising them (albeit usually in a 'jokey' fashion) for committing such cardinal sins as copycat threads, defending trolls and saying something is good/bad without an 8000 word explanation detailing exactly why.

It's great, see, you have to spend loads of money on extra clothes, going out is torture, even staying IN is torture because even though we'll be coming back periodically to raid oil it still won't be enough to keep our fuckin' skyrise jerry-built little hovels fuckin' warm because nothing will be insulated properly! Everybody will be depressed and coughing and frostbitten and just wanting to fuckin' hibernate but instead we'll get to go to work every fuckin' day for the privilege of not fuckin' freezing to death! Cool huh?" "Umm.." "Wait it gets better! Half of the heating budget will go to leaving the water heater on all night and even then come morning there'll only be enough hot water out of the tap to fill a motherfucking piss bottle so everybody will be walking around even more depressed and violent cuz they're unshaven and look and smell like shit all the time!"

Why the goddamn FUCK did these idiots populate this fucking wasteland? Is this any way to live? (OK I'm 1/4 Hungarian which makes me some kind of pseudo-chink or something ["Mongoloid, he was a mongoloid, unhappier than you & me!"] but what's everybody else's excuse? (Embracing-dark-side dept., maybe that's why I don't really 'get' the historically pacifist [heh] Brits mass-demo'ing 'we're sorry about that other shit we won't raid yr oil no more' [not to mention trying to convince the world for the last 50 yrs that you're really a bunch of conscience-stricken commies] - doesn't convince me - it is in your natures. Repeat after me, "We are assholes who want to kill everybody and steal their shit but don't worry we will get our just deserts, ie annihilation, and it was all our own fault for MOVING TO A GIANT MEAT LOCKER" feels good doesn't it but the craven cowering in the face of cosmic destruction doesn't SUIT you, although if somebody can figure out how to keep a cup of coffee HOT for the space of time it takes to drink the fucker then maybe the prospect of WW3 would aggravate me a bit more (World responds - "You NEED more coffee?" Uh, sorry...)"

THE GLORIOUS LEADER COMMANDS YOU -- STOP SMOKING!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 31 May 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in a foul mood when I wrote that, but I still stand by it. Things I don't like about this: most obviously, that it's an in-joke inside an in-joke. For all that it's "the world's greatest archive of Pirosmani art", it doesn't do anything that shows up on google until 100+ posts in, because actually saying "this is the art of Niko Pirosmani" would let other people play the game - cross reference this with The Steering Committee complaining on AIM that people who posted non-P pictures were "ruining the thread". This is over and above my usual annoyance/embarrassment with anything that relates to art knowledge I don't have, IE any at all. ILX catchphrase bingo is ugly enough at the best of times, tying them to this excellent art even more so. And the explanation (on AIM) that the fun was to be had matching the phrases with "these sincere images" is Crypto-Momusian: See! we are the players! they are the played! It also doesn't seem true to my art history-impoverised eye: The pictures seem capable of being playful, as least as playful as dragging out Man of Oats one more time.

This is all the more embarrassing/annoying because the steering committee are some of my favourite people.

PS: I do recognize that I've gone a bit Barry on this, but I thought I might as well explain myself.

andrew what are you on?! i'm pretty sure everyone (after ronan) started in the same way viz looking at the source code to see what website he was looking at, then stealing more pictures. i had no idea who Pirosmani was before this, and i doubt i'm the only one. and surely the fun was obvious?

I have to admit, I thought this thread was amusing in a weird way until a couple people like Adam posted something and got told "you dont understand" as well. So theres some injoke of an injoke on AIM and people in it are complaining those not in the know are "ruining" the thread?

Riiight. Thats sadder than sad. Stepping away, right about now.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 31 May 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"you don't understand" is an ilx in-joke in and of itself.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 May 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I see. Been here over 18 months and missed that one somehow, heh. Ahwell.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 31 May 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think there really is an in-joke. i saw that people i knew (but you don't have to know them) were posting funny pictures here and matching them with references i think most ILXors would garner had they been here long enough, and i did the only thing i could do - attempt to join in when it was already too late. the 'you don't understand' thing was i think because people were linking pictures that weren't by the same artist, no big deal - but the reactions it has caused is interesting.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 31 May 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

and yeah who are the steering committee again? am i in it? i don't remember the ordination ceremony - is that a good thing?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 31 May 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve - yeah thats what I thougt too, I mean I got the "all the same artist" joke but Andrew's implying theres a bunch of people offboard having a laugh cos some people dont get it. Its no big deal really anyway...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Communities are inclusive, Anthony. I think Trayce and AF were entirely fair if a little oversensitive (which is exactly how I reacted too). Nothing worse than feeling like a clique is conspiring against you, however gently.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ummm as it's been said upthread, all you have to do is look at the image properties to see what's going on. I see no clique, although that there was apparently external AIM discussion is a tad weird. I mean, it's not like it's a complicated enough joke to require conspiring, eh?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Liz, people from the boards talk on AIM all the time, at different times, I talk to a few, but not many (the usual suspects really) it's no biggie, it's not as if you could really have a steering committee for a big lump of nonsense such as this.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The creepiest part of this whole thread is the suggestion that there was a "steering committee".

This thread reminds me of college circa 2nd year.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite frankly, Mark, anyone's responsibility to not make another person feel shit only goes so far. ie if a person is going to be oversensitive, are YOU responsible for THEIR personality quirk?

I mean, I can think of several examples of this sort of "palliness" in which Andrew was involved and got just as defensive as he is against everyone on this thread towards the people who were in his position on the other threads (uh, follow?). And you as well, Mark: cf This is the thread where I say pt 47568: We are still being gay and you will all still love it (ie see Ronan's retort vis a vis if you don't like it, just ignore it).

In conclusion, WHO GIVES A FUCK!!!!!!!! GOOD LORD!!!!!!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post Mark that's only true if your 'friends' (or 'regulars' as I intend to call my friends from now on) are being reasonable. I may have missed the bits where someone has been made to feel dumb but no-one has a responsibility to not post things which have an unexpected by-product of upsetting someone.

This thread has made me feel that everyone else is dumb. Maybe even as dumb as me.

Oh heavens. Why can't everyone just love each other? Shit, Tim, if you accidentally upset your friend, you try and make them happy again. Isn't this human nature?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(Maybe the only place that does the touchy feely stuff is the Thread Where I Say. Maybe it should just stay there, leaving the rest of ILE the edgy, unforgiving hipster utopia it wants to be.)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I told you last week that I don't believe in human nature.

But yes you're right I suppose, although I think I'd have shied away from the word 'responsibility'.

I think you reminded me of a post the other week where someone implied that it was ILX's responsibility to be welocming to newcomers, which is not something I agree with but that's another argument entirely.

There's plenty of pleasantness outside those threads, Mark.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Too much pleasantness, in fact.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I think of Nicole as a kind of pleasantness barometer. If she says there's too much pleasantness then she's not to be argued with.

don't be twee unless you brought enough for everybody.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(i really don't want to start anything, but i still feel that the notion that anyone can get upset because other people are capable of reading the source code is a bit weird. actually i guess what i find weird is that it didn't occur to people to try; surely you think "hmm, there must be a way that everyone's posting pictures by the same guy? oh, i bet they're getting them off the same website. how can i find out what that website is? well, if i could only see the source code... oh, wait a minute, i bet that's what that "view source code" option's for! hurrah!". or maybe that's just the way my brain works (i admit this is very plausible).)

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

you don't even have to view the source code you just right-click on the image itself. no point tho as no-one is funnier than Ronan or Gareth. it's true.

Toby = voice of reason. But I suppose ILX wouldn't be ILX without people overreacting to everything, so go about your business people.

I apologise wholeheartedly to anyone mortally offended because I participated in a banal yet amusing group joke that occurred all because we cottoned onto a similar idea at the same time and was not orchestrated in some sinister AIM chat purely designed to make you - yes YOU - feel like shit. But hey, those pictures are beautiful, aren't they?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And so this thread goes full circle once again. Can someone please lock it now for poetic justice to be served?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, you are of course aware that the legendary AIM chat basically involved about four people going "haha, isn't that thread funny?" "yeah, I've posted another one" "what happens when we run out of pictures" "can someone save this thread?", "why are we sitting in doing this when we could be out having fun?" and so forth? AND THAT'S IT!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I blame myself for starting it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 June 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Drunk now.

I think people ignored the last part of my second post: I know I'm being over sensitive, but I'm interested in why. Maybe someone could have talked about how as communities get bigger there'll be a tendency for people to have 'our thing' and at what size ILX will baklnaise (again!) and I Don't Fucking Know. Or someone could have expressed the slightest interest in what I said/felt instead of what you all thought I said, bastards.

Anyway, my point is that I am not someone who when they say 'I fele this' they mean 'you should feel this'. I'm happy that people enjoyed this thread, I don't enjoy not enjoying this thread, but I'd still like to put that under the microscope because that's what I do in lieueu of social interaction / being nice to people I like.

The only thing that really pissed me off was Ronan's crack about the High Moral Ground. I DON'T HAVE ANY, I NEVER HAVE HAD.

two years pass...

OK,

Unlike most of you, I'm unemployed. When I'm at home, ILX is my playground, my dandled trinket. I'm hard to keep quiet at the best of times, and times are fairly hard right now. Anyway, there are a couple of observations made about me by others that I assure you are always in my head when I post. One in particular - that my most annoying trait is to take a civil group-discussion thread and turn it into The LJ Show. I've been actively trying NOT to do this for the last couple of years, and it's largely been working.

Today, however, things have come to a head slightly and I've been posting at the rate of about once every three minutes or so (at least, it seems this way) and consequently a few threads have suffered a surfeit of some opinionated Limey tosser spouting off at everyone. I look back now on the wreckage of the day and I see you all sat at work, hoping for ILX's humane discourse and seeing only what Tombot once described as the idiot on the bus, running up and down the gangway, hollering his little head off. I understand how infuriating this must be.

Anyway, I'm very sorry. I don't expect this to be a long thread-revive and to ensure this I won't post here any longer, but I'd like you all to know that I'm fully aware of my own boorishness, and my cavalier attitude to keeping it a) classy, b) positive and c) within reasonable limits, and that I shall stay my hand with stoic affability should such an episode as this overtake me once again.

gracias.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 00:15 (fifteen years ago)

you're okay with me, LJ. no worries, you've usually got something unusual to say. a compliment.

i apologize for all the people i annoy by expressing half-formed opinions on subjects i don't really understand at great length. plus everybody who's ever had to read my Deep Thoughts On Race Relations. same thing, really, but yeah.

does that include your "deep thoughts on gender dynamics," too?

sarahel, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

this --

ILX is my playground, my dandled trinket.

― acoleuthic, Tuesday, September 14, 2010.

made me think of this --

keep in mind that our narrator into these events is someone who likes to think of the English language as a Victorian jack-in-the-box

― feel free to answer my Korn Kuestion (HI DERE), Tuesday, September 7, 2010

also, can't find satisfactory definition of "dandled trinket."

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 00:21 (fifteen years ago)

kinda like what Michael Jackson did with his kid on the balcony

sarahel, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 00:22 (fifteen years ago)

haha! that's actually the definition i found:

dandle vb (tr)
1. to move (a young child, etc.) up and down (on the knee or in the arms)
2. to pet; fondle

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 00:23 (fifteen years ago)

I apologize for derailing threads, abandoning threads, and attention whoring. (You didn't get the worst of the last one, thank God.)

oh yeah. not that this does not constitute a promise to refrain from further adventures in thinking aloud.

i kinda appreciate your adventures in thinking aloud - i might be in the minority there, but whatever

sarahel, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 00:32 (fifteen years ago)

thanks. and it's not like i have any self control anyway...

well, you apparently don't throw things around your apartment - so you do have that.

sarahel, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

haha. i haven't seen any of l0uis j.'s posts today, but his mea culpa inspires me to search for all of them.

only 10 people read l0uis j.'s posts today but every single one of them went on to become a thread derailer

i, for one, look forward to derailing some threads.

the 9/11 conspiracy thread, for instance . . .

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 01:24 (fifteen years ago)

too much sensible talk and rational discourse in that thread ATM.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

just to let you all know, I have <3 for you, but I have to restate my post here with the added mea culpa that I'm a complete idiot and won't be posting for a few days

sorry again to everyone I offended tonight, you have my oath I won't act like this again

I would like to apologize to my ex-girlfriend ida, who I'm now being told is actually a lurker on this side, for calling her 'bad' on the thread about Bono from U2 not being able to count properly in Spanish. I was trying to make a joke along the lines of 'Fred Bove and the Bad Ida', but then thought better of it. You are cool, Ida.

I apologize to tipsy mothra for my posts on the mixology thread yesterday, which may have come off as combative or defensive. I got agitated because, for whatever reason, I felt the need to prove my bona fides on the subject of cocktail history. I've been too embarrassed to open the thread since then.

I apologize to budo jeru and everyone else for throwing another tantrum. And I apologize to ILX as a whole for my periodic "acting out"-bursts and cringey sanctimony in general. I know that sudden rage can be a real serious trigger to folks and I truly regret any emotional pain I've caused any posters over the years. Probably won't be coming here too much for awhile. Again, sincerely, I am sorry.

What?

calstars, Saturday, 18 January 2025 19:48 (eight months ago)

<3 brimstead

i was searching for your most recent post, just because i was about to bump the milk carton thread. i know times have been rough recently and, well, i can't speak for budo and i didn't read that thread closely, but hope we can all forgive each for just about everything except for repeated, ongoing purposefully hurtful behavior. you certainly aren't like that, and we're all allowed (i think) to mess up on occasion, as long as we acknowledge it and really try to do better. i think you did acknowledge it, and i've seen many time that those bad moments aren't who you are. hope you're well wherever you are <3

z_tbd, Tuesday, 21 January 2025 19:10 (eight months ago)

all the same, i support taking a step away for a while and it's done me a world of good to do it a few times. just come on back and say hello sometime soon, if you can. :)

z_tbd, Tuesday, 21 January 2025 19:12 (eight months ago)

brimstead, i sent you an ilx mail, let me know if that doesn't work. i'm not upset in the slightest and hope you're taking care

budo jeru, Thursday, 23 January 2025 18:12 (eight months ago)

just sending <3 to brimstead, i hope you're ok

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Saturday, 25 January 2025 23:10 (eight months ago)

so many people on here not here anymore! a veritable who's who of ye olde ilx.

i apologize to butt boner and lagoon for the evil thoughts i had about them and everyone else on the politics thread last year. i blame trump. my ilx experience is much mellower now that i stay away from that foul foul thread.

i know! i was just THINKING evil thoughts! i didn't even have to apologize! but what the hell...sometimes its good to get rid of stuff.

budo jeru, i appear to no longer have access to the email address i used to register to ilx, but i appreciate you reaching out <3 relieved no hard feelings
