Another New ILX Server

Aaarghh.

The company that gives us free colocation has decided that - since we're moving to a smaller server room - my machines are too big. (ILX currently uses two medium-sized desktop tower boxes) In order to continue to make use of the free bandwidth and rack space we'll need to get a machine which only utilises 1 or 2 rack units. We have around 30-60 days to make new arrangements or lose our connectivity altogether.

Plan A: Buy a new machine.

Minimum specs are:
Around 2ghz of single or combined CPU power
1gig of ram
>40gb hard drive space
Standard 19" rackmount case (1u or 2u)

I've been having a look on eBay, and it looks as though second-hand machines of this calibre tend to sell for a little over USD$1,000. (in Australia, anyway - overseas shipping would be nightmarish) There's one ideal machine whose auction closes next Wednesday.

I'm prepared to contribute AUD$500 of my own cash towards this machine. (Something I can't really afford to do, but will do anyway) To afford buying something like this I'd need another USD$700-800.

Pros: A machine I can get at and play with if it breaks. Offsite backup would be a lot easier, as I'd have a high-speed link to the machine every day. I like hardware.

Cons: I'll have to foot the bill in the case of hardware failure. The corporate sponsorship could be cancelled at short notice. (Although I believe this to be unlikely, due to the fact they are happily moving us to the new datacentre - provided we take up less space.)

Plan B: Lease a dedicated machine.

http://www.servermatrix.com/ has what we need for USD$300 setup, and USD$60/month recurring.

Pros: Less upfront costs. Managed (so if it breaks they'll fix it).

Cons: We'd have to continuously raise money. After 8 months we'd have spent as much as it would cost to get a new machine.

Plan C: Somebody gives us a new machine and/or colocation space.

Is there anybody out there who can offer something better than I can? It would make me sad to lose ILX, as I feel a strong emotional connection to it. I also feel I've gained the trust of the ilxors, and kinda enjoy my status as custodian of our little community.

Is there anybody out there who works for a hardware vendor (like Dell, IBM, HP, Apple, etc) and who might be able to cut us some sort of deal?

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously I prefer Plan A.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be happy to contribute some cash but apart from that I have nothing else I can offer.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah time to reopen the contributions drive i reckon

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad someone else noticed this. I was starting to feel very embarassed of us all.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Right now is the quietest time of day for ILX, so I'm not discouraged by the lack of responses.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ah good.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

(just posting to bump the thread up. sorry. nothing more i can do, my income's about to be cut by fifty percent or more :(

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a dual Pentium 3 motherboard knocking around and may be able to lay my hands on some more bits through work. Either free or at cost.

I won't be able to say for certain what I'll be able to lay my hands on and at what it might cost as the guy in charge of our manufacturing department is away this week.

(part of the business is building dual xeon or pentium 4 video playout or capture servers)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm for another fundraiser too - we've seen that we can get the money that way and I'm sure everyone will pitch in.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Appreciated, Ed. Would the board fit in a 19" rackmount case? That's the crux of the issue here...

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It came out of a 19" rackmount case. Might struggle with 2u though as it is a slot 1 board.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Hrmm. Well, we'd also need to get a case for it. Let's see if anybody else can come up with some bits 'n' pieces.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately we tend to hang on to rackmount cases. A witnessed by the number of upended rack mount boxes under people's desks here.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i didnt contribute last time, i will this time though.

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

oh bollox. Plan B is right out I think. so it's either (preferably) scrape together a 1u server or, less likely, find new (free!) colocation. damn.

I don't think I can help at all, but I'll obviously make some efforts.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

gareth, what does your work do with redundant computer bits?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, i may be able to liberate some parts here, tho i would need someone to tell me what to look for!

will definitely contribute some cash

don't think i can match Andrew's specs regarding hosting but will look into it

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I can only get my hands on a network card and half a dozen or so hot-swappable hard disks (4.3G) that would suit a 1 (or 2) u server. obv the disks could be unmounted from the swap sledges (or whatever they are called). It's a bit dismal, but there you are. Not sure of network card details...

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i have one of these - it's dedicated but there are several other sites running on it and i have experienced bandwidth problems in the past (granted this was mostly down to gratutitous mpeg hosting with blatant linkage) but it sounds like it might fit the bill unless something the size of ILX requires true dedicated hosting (it would be the biggest site on there tho) - i think the RAM has been upgraded so is more than 512 but will confirm. i currently pay for this server with my own money.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if I can contribute money from back here, but I'd be willing to do so if possible. It won't be much though, my current income is very limited.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew is money a good option right now? Just thinking you should start a "help ILX!" thread/link for that asap if you only have 1-2 months to sort this thats all. Im sure as many as can will help :)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem, ILX would probably run well on the machine you're colocating, but the bandwidth allowance (40gb) is less than half of ILX's monthly requirements.

Alan, thanks for your offers but I've already got plenty of network cards and hard drives. :) (probably for the same reasons you have them spare)

Trayce, I don't really want to start a donation drive unless I can be reasonably confident we can collect enough. We'll see what happens with this machine I've got my eye on - I may be able to snipe it for AUD$1k, or a bit over that. It's very much a luck thing at this stage.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I may subsequently sell the current servers, if they prove to be worth anything.

Who knows, maybe I could auction them as "The ilxor.com servers circa 2002-2004" and get some decent cash for them. ;)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm with Plan A all the way then, some cash on the way asap

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I have some other bits salvaged from a compaq proliant skip dive this weekend as well. I see what exactly it was that I got though before I offer up anything. it was all pretty old.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Who owns the current machines? Are they yours Andrew?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, they're mine. In the third quarter of last year some ILXors helped me finance the newest one.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I know you don't have a solid deadline, but could you make up a target deadline and we could advertise it in a countdown where the "Contributions" link is at the top, i.e. Contribute (X days left) to keep it alive in everyone's mind

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay well it looks like it'll most likely be a donation drive again. If you'd be willing to donate please register your intention in this thread. I'll organise this better when I get back from writing-an-essay-land on Friday afternoon. To give you an idea as to how badly I am procrastinating: I actually hacked my university's firewall to post this message.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

As ever, willing in both kind and money.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

yes

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll throw some money in as well.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Bump-a-dump.

(And as mentioned offboard, I'm in on the contributions, obv.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

as upthread, yes

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm down with the contribs.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

will be donating.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

We may have to trim the bells and whistles back if we are moving to a weaker box. Though I hope A) is the route to go.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

you can have a bit of my birthday money if i get any.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

How exactly do you donate?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll donate. i should probably tithe a portion of my salary, since this is the thing that makes my job enjoyable...

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to donate a bit. Sadly it's not going to be too much, I'm sorry I'm pretty skint at the moment otherwise I'd donate more. :-(

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds good. how do i donate?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I will also donate what I can. New ILX hardware - hooray! It's so easy to forget the reality of how ILX actually exists on the interweb...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, donations have been opened. It looks like Noodles has coded a little 'x days left' script for the 'Contribute' link above. It was originally set to 50 days. I think 30 is probably better.

Click the 'Contribute' link (at the top-right of every page) to find the Paypal Donate button.

As with the last endeavour of this sort, I can't accept foreign (non-Australian) cheques as they cost too much to process. Paypal is the only viable option for me, as it lets me handle everything pretty easily online.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll do my bit too... might need to be cash in hand over a beer tho if thats ok Andrew :)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

And I'll state now that the goal of this exercise is to raise about USD$700 to go towards the purchase of a new server. I'll stop accepting donations after 30 days.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

(I changed the link - just so you know)

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, so it was Alan. Yeah, I changed it back to the donate page. Thanks for doing the codework though! :)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have a credit card so that's me off the hook

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

send me a cheque and i'll add that to my donation ;)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Paypal accepts debit cards too, no?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have one of those either

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you some kind of insolvent scum?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Donation just sent.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you some kind of insolvent scum?

Scum certainly, solvent abuse likely

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Don't give him a Switch card - he'll only use it to buy superglue"

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

hey i don't have a credit or debit card either.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

B-but - how do you waste money online??

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I gotta wait until my next credit card cycle, but I'm in then.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

(haha I just checked and that's like tomorrow!)

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have any money, I'm a student :)

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

aight, done

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

You're not getting any of my money. Just let it die. It's run its course.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Where do I sign up?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

But as soon as I get some youth allowance andrew, i'll send some down your way. Let the government pay for ilxor.com i say!

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"We're cheapskates anything'll do
We're cheapskates what are we supposed to do?"

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

heh, Marcello has a point - tho the response of the majority is kind of heart-warming and suggests that ILX should continue. i would rather it stopped because enough of us wanted it to rather than stop because of technical problems like finance and hardware location.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in (cash-wise, too useless to offer any other services).

Mark C on someone else's computer, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in.

Can you put some kind of 'fundraiser barometer' up so we know what's still needed? (Something really cheesy, if possible.. )

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

is there a suggested donation per person?

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Couldn't you just sell your record collection or something to raise the money?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe start ilxforcheapskates@yahoogroups.com

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

$115 received already. :) Fantastic!

You're not getting any of my money. Just let it die. It's run its course.

I'm really pleased you've decided ILX has no future. Now could you finally follow through on at least one of your pathetic bluffs and leave? For good this time?

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

well hey i plan to donate money, but i'd like to know how much other people are putting in.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The amounts thus far have been $30, $20, $15, and $50. As per the last time, I'll not associate amounts with names, and not reveal the names of those that wish to remain anonymous.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

well i gave $50 but this was not as much as the blind man, for he gave all he had

Do You Pharisee (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Further donations: $25, $50, $40, and $20. $250 total!! :)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

seems like 30 hours should do it, rather than 30 days

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

...it was a woman with a coin of little value btw.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

she should have donated herself

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

as food aid

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if Andrew didn't have to put up all $500, that would be good for him ...

xpost - if only an old woman had any value.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not on my own computer at the moment Andrew, and don't have my credit cards with me - but I'll happily make a donation when I get back home tomorrow.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

HUGE REDUCTIONS

EVERYTHING MUST GO

I am excited about a possible re-birth of ILX. what if (as has been mooted before) we start on the new server with a clean slate? will ALL data be transferred over?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy fuck! A further $60, $50, $10, and $35. That's $395 total. I'm quite overwhelmed.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit, bad timing for me this time around, just having lost my job. Andrew, do you need specific hardware again this time around beyond the case? I can check my stash, but let me know quickly.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we have a totaliser please? It'd be like watching those charity evenings on TV..

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Sean, it looks like I can probably afford to buy a whole machine. I doubt you'd have any rackmount/server bits, would you? Any extra ECC ram could probably be of use. Of course, don't fret if you don't have anything. You were incredibly generous last time. :)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Let the donations run for a while though. It would be good to overspec the server now rather than do this again in 6 to 12 months time.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

For sure. We may even afford something *gasp* new, with a warranty and everything!

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i will have to donate later this evening when I get paid. right now im working a negative bank balance.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

mmm xserve running gentoo ppc64

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

All done. (like I said I wish it could be more!)
x-post
is there any other kind Chris?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha. I haven't had a negative balance in my bank account for a long time. Unfortunately my mortgage and car payment and assorted other bills all hit at the same time. luckily its only -$1.61

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Instead of wasting your time insulting me, Andrew, why don't you adopt my previous suggestion of selling your record collection, or something else if you have anything else, to raise the money? Don't you think it would be somewhat more dignified than all this panhandling?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I laugh at your overdraft Sir!
x-post
marcello, we're donating because we want to. if you don't want to donate, then don't.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh fuck off Marcello. You're so boring.

mmm xserve running gentoo ppc64

I'm currently looking at Intel (HP/Dell/IBM) boxes. I'd love to get an xserve, but they start at AUD$4,700!!!

(+ $15 + $20 + $10 = $440... wtf! It keeps coming...)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

most of us seem happy to donate Marcello, nobody is being forced to. who are you to be concerned with dignity of all things as far as ILX goes?

(x-post x2)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It looks like Noodles has coded a little 'x days left' script for the 'Contribute' link above.

I don't even like to write emails before my morning coffee so it will never be me at 9 in the morning :P

will ALL data be transferred over?

If we do it right it will be.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

is Marcello not totally kidding? Surely?

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I should note that last night Andrew and I were talking a bit about this before he started this thread, and he was VERY uncomfortable about asking others for financial help. He felt the same way during the last fund drive. But there is a spirit of community here throughout all the weird ups and downs and all that, and it shows in the donations, among many other things as well. There is nothing wrong or worrisome about that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I think $4,700 is getting carried away Andrew, but who knows eh??!! ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

can you get one with flashy lights that do nothing, and makes tea for us ;)

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

DO NOT HOLD YOUR BREATH FOR X-SERVES (even if you have the money). apple stopped making the G4 xserves at the start of the year, and only now are the G5s appearing in europe. we've had one on order for MONTHS. bah

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

that is true

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh. I don't know about Tea, but I'll find some sort of bonus feature for all those that donate.

(+ $10 + $15 = $465. We've just exceeded the grand total from last time! In less than 3 hours!)

The XServe thing was a joke, by the way. :)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops. Andrew, I just donated $35 but I forgot to allow my name to be attached to the donation. Just so you know.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i know, still it WOULD be nice, num num

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

(+ $10 + $15 = $465. We've just exceeded the grand total from last time! In less than 3 hours!)
Woo!
I got a 'Turn back you poxy fule' for my trouble of donating. hmph!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Erk. Those POXY FULE messages suck. I hereby proclaim I will do everything in my power to eradicate the poxy fule once and for all once the new server is in place.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm just glad this is US dollars and not £££...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(Incidentally, a friend of mine is raising money to get two of her grandfather's sizable architectural models restored by the American Folk Art Museum. I've offered to set up a website and paypal account for her, but I don't know if there's any way I can set up a paypal account for her so that she can recieve the money directly rather than using me as a middleman. Any ideas?)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Poxy fule rules!

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike can she not set up an account on a computer somewhere herself? this could be done from any PC and you could guide her through it even. People only need her Paypal ID to be listed on the website but if she can't access computer/internet often then I guess that's a problem when it comes to collecting payment.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

There's always a few people going "I don't think ILX is good for me, I should cut down/out". If Marcello knew better, he might be one. But right now, I definitely am, so I can't see myself contributing to this, sorry. Not that you aren't doing well without me :)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't apologise, Andrew.

If you have any reservations about donating then PLEASE DO NOT DONATE. Don't feel bad.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I am excited about a possible re-birth of ILX. what if (as has been mooted before) we start on the new server with a clean slate? will ALL data be transferred over?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$

you know who, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hrmm. I've been toying with the idea of moving older threads into an archive database, to speed things up. This would kill thread revivals though, which are a big part of ILX culture.

TRON FIGHTS FOR THE USERS (ex machina), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't remember how much I offered to donate, on my GET YOUR ASS TO MARS thread. it might have been £3, 000, 000.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, cough it up motherfucker.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(We're over $500 now, btw)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't remember.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

if we donate enough money can we have an online scrabble server set up too? (i'll do it when i get home)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The ILX Globe!

we need this

TRON FIGHTS FOR THE USERS (ex machina), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, a donation now sent, a little start for now!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

and don't forget the link to the FAP Diary ;)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

with steak fries on the side

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

since I actually have a job now, unlike last year, I'll be happy to donate by next paycheck (the 15th).

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

and seabrooks crisps

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought you said "i'm happy to donate MY next paycheque"!!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahahahahaha NO.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I could donate a pretty significant amount, though. I don't mind blowing off the creditors for another month.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

keep the money and blow us off instead

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Pardon me?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I will donate for myself and for my hubby, Scott Seward.

Maria D., Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, that's fucking rude, thanks a lot pal.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry bro.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

bro me.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that an orientalist remark?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Peace, let us keep our eye on the goal. :-) Which apparently as Charltonlido notes may be achieved in but a few more hours, though as Andrew also noted there's also the idea of seeing if we can raise enough to spring for a fully new machine with warranty, never a bad thing. Either way, amazingly great!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

aw crap you mean I won't be able to save the day with last-minute heroicsdonations?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha wtf! Thanks Maria, Hstencil, and everyone else who's donated/said they will donate.

We're now sitting at $600 after paypal fees (which I'd neglected to include in all previous totals).

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Then we can buy Marcello some sweets to cheer him up

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

damn next time I'm unemployed I'm just gonna ask ILXors for a new "server"... ; )

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention....

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

as I'm sure he will confirm in due course

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this fund is benefiting from favourable USD/GBP exchange rates :)

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

<economiks> is the Aus $ linked to the US $, or will Andrew lose out by having to covert back to Australian $s? </economiks>

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

however it works out it is probably best for someone to buy the computer kit in the US and ship it out to Oz.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i think paypal will take care of all of that for him, jb.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed, Madchen. :) We're at $641.

The Aus $ is quite strong at the moment, but yeah I will lose a little on the conversion. No big deal, though.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i think us$ -> aus$ xchange rate is quite too so it's a double winner

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

oh oops sorry

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed, I've considered that, but I'm going to give HP a call tomorrow to get them to give me a quote and see how it matches up against their prices in the states.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sorry i can't donate more, andrew. how great would it be to hit $1000 by end of day?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

of course you probably wouldn't get the warranty then and the shipping of bit would be a better idea than the shipping of a whole box.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it goes without saying that that would be fucking fantastic!

Anyway, I'm off to bed. I'll probably be a bit incommunicative because of uni assignments and whatnot over the next 36 hours. I'll keep you all updated, though.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed, HP's warranties are global. Not sure about their onsite assistance though. (something I'd definitely purchase if we had the cash)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Rather then archiving, lets ditch trackback. Or index the wonderfuly insane log table in some logical manner.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Feel free to delete any posts from "ken c", with keywords "work" "dossing" "hate" "bukkake" "jizz" "poo" in order to speed up server.

you'd actually clear up quite a lot of space, too.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think we'd then lose all of your posts, Ken.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

woohoo! my job is safe

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

you know what he means by "job," bro.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

blow me

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

don't ditch trackback, but def clean it up and make it work better - so many empty lines in that table!

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

flow bee.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Bump a bit. Keep the contributions coming if you can!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

They've sent round Ned to rattle a tin

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I will rattle my bones.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the deal on the deadline for this again? Is it really 29 days like it says above? I'd like to help, but won't really be able to for another week.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, 29 days as noted. Andrew's post starting the thread makes the reasons for some sort of deadline clear enough...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I am giving you the money that I saved by downloading the new Wilco album. Enjoy.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP, I am not gay.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

would you like him to be?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

This is not a fund drive to make Dean gay.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, come on Ned. Do you fear losing your paycheck?!?!?!

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

all you gotta say is the three magic words (i am gay) then the money's transferred

Shisty (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Dean should contribute what he'll make in the class-action lawsuit after suing Wilco for emotional distress.

This record is the source of my riches, and distress:

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The last couple of weeks have made this question a little more interesting and perplexing.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll pony up some cash if cXlXm never posts again.

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Just like hstencil, I get paid on the 15th, so expect some cash then. As for now, a Blue Peter-stylee cash-o-meter is required. Who knows Flash?

Johnney B, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I can bung in a good contribution, I think. I am wealthy these days!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

if we donate enough money can we have an online scrabble server set up too? (i'll do it when i get home)

If anyone really does want to set up an online scrabble server, i can send you one I wrote a couple of years back. The only problem is, I never got round to writing clients for it - but I'm sure that shouldn't be too hard.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

caitlin, you moran!

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahah!

(it was an occasional ILXor who I wrote the scrabble server for, as it happens. I didn't write clients because I figured that most of the potential users would want a client for Windows, and I don't have a Windows machine)

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

caitlin, java!!!!

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, I know. I even vaguely know Java. I hate having to program GUIs, though.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, I can only send cash money, I have no credit or proper debit cards, so can't really use paypal. If you email me a postal address, I'll stuff some notes in an envelope, and hopefully it'll get to you. (wow, this method sounds cool and exciting)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Caitlin, for lame gui crap, java is ok

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just added to the donations pot.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

*pulls out her debit card*

I'll do my bit, too.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

If I get a job this month, then. Otherwise, next time.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Jel, you could pass the cash to a London ILXer at an upcoming event and we could pay Andrew by Paypal - I'll do it if you want.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Jel, it does indeed sound exciting :) but as I said, it's a bit too complicated for me to accept anything but Paypal. Martin's suggested method is preferred, if you feel comfortable doing that.

Well, as of now we're at $974. Pretty impressive for a bit over 12 hours! Let's see how much further we can take this...

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

My goodness, we really did hit $1000 or near to it! Amazing! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Just kicked in some $$

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

$1059 :)

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Just hit you up with $20USD.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like you won't neeed it but... maybe you should post this on ILM too? Get some of those combative bastards to shell out a bit of the change they blow on records/cds.

Maria D. (scott seward), Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

There it was behind me television set the whole time!

Mike Skinner, Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I've priced a new HP server (Proliant DL140) at about USD$1650. (2x Xeon 2.4ghz, 1gb ram, 2x 80gb hdd, in a 1RU rackmount case) Less USD$275 for a single CPU configuration. I'm putting in around USD$350.

We can already afford the single CPU box, and at just under USD$1100 we're only USD$200 away from the dual CPU configuration. Yay!!

Nothing's final yet, though. I'm going to have a chat to some people at work about this and see if there's any way I can get the hardware cheaper (and thus get better/more stuff). We have quite a few HP machines in the main server room so I gather they'd have pretty good connections with the suppliers.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

We can already afford the single CPU box, and at just under USD$1100 we're only USD$200 away from the dual CPU configuration. Yay!!

Wonderful! And if as you say there's a way to get that level of stuff even cheaper, then we're really flying. :-) Let's see if we can all help get that final $200 together!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, does anybody want to do me a favour? I'll paypal USD$1100 to anyone who can write a High Distinction standard essay on Allen Ginsberg.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I wrote an essay on him in first year, only got a credit though :)

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, do you guys still need $$$? I've derived too much pleasure/gained a lot out of ILX over the years I have lurked and sometimes posted.

What's a good donation amount in AUD for a semi-lurker like me?

Mike Stuchbery, Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, there's no real exact amount, Mike -- it's whatever you feel able or comfortable enough to donate. I'd say keep in mind the remaining amount Andrew has mentioned would help us lock down a good machine -- $200 USD -- and contribute what you think you can to help take care of that. The donation ranges are varying for many reasons and you can see some individual amount totals listed upthread for reference.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

People have donated between $5 and $100 so far. Any amount is acceptable.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool, well I'm supervising a detention here at the moment, but when it's over and I'm done banging heads together, I'll go kick you guys twenty or thirty bucks.

Oh shiiiit, some kid's mobile just went off. It's asskicking time!

Mike Stuchbery, Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahaha.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously guys, you'd just blow what you'd donate on books or records or comics or hatsful of Sake with a single Plum floating in them, so kick in!

Mike Stuchbery, Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I believe it was a single plum floating in perfume in a man's hat.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, guys, Paypal doesn't wanna work.

Mike Stuchbery, Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's working for me. Just sent $90.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's working for me too, I just sent a payment

C J (C J), Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks guys!

At $1202 we're just $100 away from our target...

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 June 2004 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Momus, I've been meaning to ask: do you get much in the way of donations for the music you provide on your site? I've been enjoying Klaxon of late, but figured it a little daft to pay for a file I downloaded from my own server. :)

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 June 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Well frankly by the time I get some cash (sunday) I can't help but think it'll all be paid for. Maybe I can send a $20 to the buy-andrew-slab-of-beer fund for being such a marvelous administrator.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 3 June 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

If it means I can get onto ILX more than about twice a day, then I will happily donate a few-ish quid. Things are going to be getting very money tight round these parts, but as Colette says, this is one of the things that makes life bearable!

Now I have to figure out how. You say it takes debit cards?

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I've tried about four times now and it will not accept my debit card. I'm sorry, I did my best. :-(

I hate this damn chip and pin card more than anything else, it never works anywhere.

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Alright, just donated 15 Yanqui dollars to your cause!

Mike Stuchbery, Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't say Switch or Solo anywhere on the card, it says Visa. I tried all three options, it still wouldn't go through. Does anyone else have a stupid chip and pin card, and can they tell me how to make it work? Thanks...

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Double-check the billing address. I had to try two different ways of entering my flat and street numbers before it matched up to whatever their records say.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

How can I find that out; there are about 10 different ways of putting my address, with regard to the flat, the house name, etc. - I generally don't go carrying my bank statements around with me!

Possibly Kate Again (kate), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Momus, I've been meaning to ask: do you get much in the way of donations for the music you provide on your site? I've been enjoying Klaxon of late, but figured it a little daft to pay for a file I downloaded from my own server. :)

There has indeed been a nice Paypal trickle since I've been making mp3s available, and that's why this donation could be the first of many, if need be. I actually tried to donate earlier in the year, only to find the donation page closed.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool! It's great to see that the small donation system can work. :)

(btw, The Water Song is really great.)

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

oh cool! Martin, I'll be at the next event, so can I pass you some cash then? cheers.

I don't get paid till tomorrow, but count me in for a couple of quid.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 3 June 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

jeezus fucking wept marcello, although i wouldn't lose any sleep if ilx died, i'll contribute a few quid because i post here. my posting here has cost me nothing for two years and it's occasionally bee worthwhile. it's all thanks to andrew putting the time and effort into hosting the fucking boards. if you're posting here, you're part of it so why in the name of arse is it a problem to hold the occasional fundraiser and ask you to put something into it to make sure it continues to work? the fact that any contrary opinions are appearing ON THESE BOARDS (which you told i should get off the other day for being rude!!!) destroys any point you may have.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello Carlin, obviously we can afford it. I don't understand the relevance of that quote.

Unfortunately my paypal account is really screwed up and I'm not sure what I'd have to do to straighten it out. Sorry.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

why should i contribute dave? what's in it for me? what returns can i expect on my investment? a substantial qualitative improvement, or the continued decline of a once helpful and interesting message board? no, best to let it die. immeasurably more dignity than being reduced to begging cap in hand. the fact that there are evidently enough flush suckers on ilx to fill said cap doesn't negate this truth.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

We've already hit the target. Don't worry about it. :)

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcello: I wouldn't accept your money regardless. YOU are a direct contributor to any perceivable decline. You are utterly selfish, wholly self-interested, and your behaviour on these boards is disgusting. Your hypocrisy is somehow simultaneously astounding and utterly predictable.

I repeat myself: would you just hurry up and make good on your many threats of leaving ILX for good? You bring nothing but bile and negativity.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

And Ginsberg
Ginsberg so annoying, the people around him and before him are more fun. Though I'd love to know how he ended up in the video for Subterran Homesick Blues.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

can we reprogram ilx so that it recognises marcello's IP and shows a page saying "ilx is dead R.I.P.", and maybe if we contribute enough money we can even install a gravestone of it on hampstead heath?

This way he'll happy that ilx will appear to him to be finally dead, and we'll be happy to be free of the constant whinging.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess Blogger must be down cause he hasn't been this annoying since winter 2001.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Marcello, I'd like to know what fucking planet you live on where server hardware and bandwidth are free? In case you haven't noticed, almost every single volunteer/community-based project of the last few years has either had to be commercialised, closed down, or received some serious sponsorship.

If you know of a better and/or more interesting discussion forum then I urge you to spare yourself any more of my 'panhandling' and take yourself there immediately.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not saying you should contribute, but to carp on about dignity and suchlike is a bit rich. i will be linking to you from my blog once a day for the next week, by the way.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have the time or desire to plunge into whatever "debates" are currently raging. Suffice to say that ANYONE who rejoices at and/or sneers at and/or tries to excuse (emotionally, intellectually or politically) the destruction of art, be it deliberate by looters in Baghdad or accidental by dodgy gas cylinders in Leyton, should go off now, break bread with Henry VIII, Josef Goebbels, the Ku Klux Klan and the Daily Mail, and stay the fuck out of my life forever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

So is that funny because Sarah Lawrence herself was pregnant with hstencil's girlfriend, OR, perhaps even more hilariously, hstencil's girlfriend lives in the 50s or something and she had to drop out because of the shame of her lovechild???!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

what's involved in this scrabble server? just what does it serve? i'm wondering if a php web front end is feasible and what would be required.

It runs on Linux. It would probably run on other Unixes.

It talks to clients via an unencrypted ASCII net connection - when we actually played it, we used a Telnet client. It would probably be possible to add a second, parallel networking layer using Unix sockets or pipes of some kind, which would make it a lot easier to add on a PHP front end.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

dude Spencer when my girlfriend was at Sarah Lawrence, I was like 4 or something. Honestly I can't recall the reason she told me as to why she dropped out, but it's moot (at least as far as education goes) 'cause she finished at New School anyway.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 June 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

> It's called a bluff, and part of being a good player is getting away with bluffs.

yeah, i know. i was curious why the scrabble nazis upthread had banned 'illegal' words in the software. i guess it eliminates the need for handling the challenging and removal of words. (and how do you agree on validity of word when you're playing remotely?).

how many points is 'exvin'? 8)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 4 June 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, now that I think about it, it didn't automatically ban bluffs. However, if a player challenged, it would check the word for you and decide whether the challenge was accepted or not.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 5 June 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I talked to Andrew last night about it briefly and it's great! We're around $1450 or so and possibly have even more now. He and I exchanged some ideas on what we could use a touch more money for, since some folks want to donate but haven't had the chance to yet, and I'm sure when he gets the chance he'll post his thoughts on the matter. Suffice to say, though, in terms of a dual processor server, new with warranty, we're now golden.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 June 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

And damn if we're not both overwhelmed and overjoyed by this all. Just a couple of days ago when he first told me about it I know he was unsure whether fundraising would go over well, and I had hopes but no sure thoughts. ILX, though, comes through again. :-)

donna (donna), Saturday, 5 June 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It's PayPal only at this point, Donna -- have you tried setting up an account there yet? It's not that hard if you have everything in place with a bank account, though I don't know if it would be different for folks in NZ. http://www.paypal.com If that doesn't work, check with Andrew directly, although I have a feeling he's going to post here and say you don't have to worry! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 June 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ok thanks Ned, I had a quick look and I think it should go through, but um, I have to wait til Thursday ( blushing now but oh well )

donna (donna), Saturday, 5 June 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

$1480 - we've easily got enough to cover a new server with an extra 512mb ram (bumping it up to 1.5gb). There's no need for anyone to donate any more, unless they just want to give me money. I'll close the donate link in 6 days time, just to give those that really wanted to give something a last chance.

I can't express just how happy I am with the generosity you guys have exhibited here. It is truly remarkable, and I can't thank you enough.

I felt kind of obligated - I've had a hell of a lot out of ILX (pretty much a lifesaver to me at some bad times) over the last two years plus, and I have plenty of spare cash now. I actually felt slightly uneasy about donating as little as $100, as it didn't seem enough, but on the other hand in the context of what was needed and how the donations were going, I decided it probably was about okay. It seems entirely right to my lefty principles that I donate that while a lot of people can't donate anything - I have the means, nowadays.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to donate but I won't be able to until the 15th. Is there a way to keep it open until then?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Drop Andrew a line directly, Stence. We really are covered with about everything we need now and then some, but Andrew and I were talking briefly about holding some cash aside for any future work/upgrades and I'm sure he can figure out what to do with spare funds.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Should we put some aside for a rainy day in case of hosting issues?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Couldn't hurt.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Build a robot with the extra cash, then have it fight against inferior interweb fora.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be a long and hard battle.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Build a robot with the extra cash, then have it fight against inferior interweb fora

This is the one plan that I approve of.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 7 June 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

My tank cat plan was killed before it had a chance to breathe.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 June 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

threw in a symbolic 10$ for all the fun i've had over the times. i have been away for a while and i only became aware of the situation today.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

El Diablo, do you still approve of the me buying you chocolate plan that had slipped my mind for the last two months (sorry!)?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a way you can keep the donate link open a little longer, Andrew? Two days, maybe? My PayPal account was at $0 when I noticed this thread and it's taking a few days to fund it.

J (Jay), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Barry -- yes! You can still be my chocolate pimp.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

J, I don't think you need a paypal account to donate, just a credit or debit card.

mei (mei), Thursday, 10 June 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

At this point you don't even need that! Really, J, don't fret about it -- the totals have gone even higher now and we are covered and covered again. If you really want to kick in something here, drop Andrew a line privately, but do not feel obligated.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 June 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't care if you've reached your goal. i owe ILM money for existing, and so i have now paid. bank it for the next fundraising drive if necessary.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 11 June 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Dying to know how this goes, also just curious as to the schedule and the mechanics of it all. Just being a pain in the arse really, as it doesn't actually make ANY difference one way or the other.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I've stopped taking donations. The final total is USD$1821.43. Amazing stuff.

It was fortunate to receive a bit more than I originally expected, as the hardware supplier I'd initially contacted has since told me their quote was "well below their margins" and thus would cost me AUD$200 more than expected. They were idiots, so I placed the order through someone else.

I'm told to expect the new hardware this week, so we're probably looking at having the new server installed and running in a couple of weeks' time.

Once again, thanks to everyone who contributed!

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

:-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, for you hardware fetishists out there, I'll take photos of the new gear when it comes in.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you think we are, a bunch of FREAKS?

(pssst, Andrew, where's the secret ILX server photo directory??)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I managed to get in under the wire yay!

Ghostface Threadkillah (calstars), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

What's happening with the current hardware anyways? I assume some of the drives, etc are being used in the new one? Any chance of getting a gigabit interconnect between the web server and the DB?

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, that's a point - seeing as there is extra cash, could the new server manage image hosting for logged in regulars to upload images to, keeping the bandwidth in the family basically..?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

jon will require 2gb on his own

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Will we be imprisoning him, like in Superman I/II?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Animated GIFs are the highest form of wit.

Jon in R'lyeh (ex machina), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really sorry I couldn't donate to this. Current cash situation is pretty grim (ie. please don't let the cheque for the water bill bounce). But thanks to everyone who has.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Look what just arrived for me at work:

Wheee! Take that as proof that I didn't spend all your money on strippers and cocaine.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

So you bought a cardboard box, what does that prove?!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

hp make a damned fine cardboard box

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe it, there is that shirt thing again.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Shirt thing?

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

it's gotta go.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

how much was the big blue ball? 8)

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Annoyed by the underwhelmed reaction, Andrew does indeed trade in the new server for hookers and coke. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

There better not be coffee grounds in that box.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmmm coffee.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Those are full of porn, y'know

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Xeon is a funny name for a hooker

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Or a nudie mag. Though it might be a nice name for a strain of top BC weed.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmm weed

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Xeon is a great name for a Greek hooker

C J (C J), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hang on, are we talking about sex hookers or rugby hookers here? (and is there a difference)

C J (C J), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I have an image of some burly, hairy-legged, Aussie baritone plying 'her' trade on a dark side street like some steroid enhanced version of Barbara from The League of Gentlemen and I'm terrified. Thanks CJ. Incidentally, this just shows that, regardless of what Jon feels about it, description more than imagery rules my psyche. Eh, Il en faut de tous les genres.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I'm fucking horrified.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to see pictures of Andrew and the server NUDE!!

(but, y'know, nothing too full on straight away - build up to the money shot, as it were)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

What would a nude server look like?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Stripped down to the motherboard.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

you could put an ilx thong on it.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

CLASSIC

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew or the server?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Both, but especially the server if it gets its kit off and sports a thong.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

unfortunately it then has to be tucked away in it's 1u housing among all the other servers, and they might not appreciate such whacky attire
