I have a parka, it's very black and has a kind of light brown fur on the hood. I think it's ace because it's warm enough that I can just wear a t shirt under it and go clubbing. Also my discman fits in the pocket, which is the first thing you check obviously.

Thrift stores are really the best for coat shopping...since coats are not worn very often (just in cold weather and then you take them off when you're indoors) they're often in fine shape even if they're quite old. Buying a coat brand new is dud unless you're some sort of professional who needs to look supersharp and can afford it.

I am managing very nicely at the moment with just a down vest (which is a handmedown from my mom and is likely older than me). They are stupendously warm, and I chill easily.

Parkas reek of Oasis so keep well away. A knee-length black/brown cashmere coat is what you need. I got mine on the cheap for 35 quid but don't know how much they are in the shops. I noticed that no one round here (The North) has this coat but when I went to London yesterday the streets were full of folks in similar coats. I didn't feel special any more.

coat advice is still welcomed from all quarters, btw - i spent something like 20 hours going round the sales in january without finding a single coat i wanted (benetton had a lovely one that was also dead cheap, but only in the sizes either side of mine, the bastards). it got to the stage where i just wanted to walk into selfridges and say "look, i'm prepared to spend (insert crazy amount of money here) on a coat, just give me something nice", but it was always too busy to find someone to ask.

Not to sound like a character from 12 Stories, but they really do not make warm coats like they used to. If I were jess (which I am not) I would spend the $200 on a second-hand cashmere or camel hair single-breasted overcoat (the style of Ed's is perfect) of the thickest material you can find. The weave should be almost as tight and thick as boiled wool. A torn lining is a shallow flaw and can be fixed by any old laundromat tailor. However, if the coat is fraying at the edges (showing the weave), that means the material is not thick enough and you should drop it like a cheating ex. Choose wisely, for if you find this holy grail of coats you will have eternal warmth. It will not be easy to find. toby's ongoing quest is completely understandable.

I love the fluffy-trimmed mod army surplus parkas. Again, old is better. They no longer manufacture the metal zipper.

toby, now is a good time to look if you want new. I saw a nice men's Duffer St. George coat the other day with the price slashed crazy low. The tailoring was superb. The material might not be warm enough for a lifetime of North American use but it would probably be fine for London.

I had a Camel overcoat very much like the one pictured. Nice quality (Aquascutum I think it was). I got it from that 2nd hand menswear shop in Fulham about six years ago when those coats first became fashionable again. Unfortunately it didn't quite fit right so I sold it to someone else. That's often the problem with vintage clothing I find. People's shapes must have changed subtly.

Lumber jackets are absolutely wonderful, if you don't mind being completely out of fashion.
I have one that's been hanging on the rack for the last couple of years since I picked it up in the Salvo's shop. I haven't had much chance to wear it because the winters in Melbourne have been really mild recently, and now my son's started eyeing it off since his mate got one. Next winter it will fit him (unless he goes through the growth spurt over summer) and I want to get one good winter out of it before I hand it on.

I have 3 now, having recently bought an awesome dual-layer black Paul Smith parka. The layer-thang basically mean that it's 2 jackets in 1. My brother is also offering me his 10-year old 1930s pilot-looking jacket, which has v.warm lining, as he figures I'm the only guy goofy enough to want and wear it.

For now my winter coats are.. a shawl collar 50's black top coat with a fairly straight silhouette.. and a charcoal grey wool plaid coat with a wide gold/red windowpane plaid & a camel collar & matching belt. Both never worn before, found in thrift shops ($15, $7).

Thrift shops? I can't afford J Crew, but I use credit. I have massive student loan debt and rationalize at times by saying, you know, $68 for a sweater is a drop in the bucket here. Mary, unless you really hate shopping, I'd recommend looking at discount places for a coat by a better maker than Old Navy. Try Loehman's, Macy's sales, TJ Maxx, Filene's Basement, Burlington Coat Factory, possib even Syms (Park and 54th) and Century 21 (WTC area) before settling for the absolute cheapest (and worst-made) version.

Luckily Loehman's (7th Ave and...17th St?), TJs and Filene's (in the same building on 6th and 18th) and Burlington (6th and 22nd-ish) are v close together so you could easily do a sweep.

The idea of owning one for the winter has intrigued me lately (mostly because it seems like it'd be easier to bike in it), but I doubt their keep-warm ability. Looking through the thread, there's one mention of vests. Thoughts, y'all?

Old Navy's pea coats are like $68! Hella cheap, but everything I get there fades/tears/buttons fall off. I'm still tempted though. It looks OK. n.b. they were playing great music last time I was in there.

i got a velveteen pea jacket from o.n. for $25. at that price, it doesn't matter if it falls apart or the fabric starts to bald. for my real winter coat, though, i'd want something from a more reliable brand.

vests are great for running, because your arms are warm from the motion but your stomach and chest can get pretty cold. possibly true for biking as well but your arms are more stationary so i'm not sure.

i want a pretty knee-length plaid coat, myself, but i can't excuse buying one when i do have a hip-length functional coat of the same weight. (i bought it five years ago and it's had buttons and sleeve linings repaired multiple times but i can't bring myself to give it upf or a new one.)

I don't really understand vests, I guess the idea is that if your core stays warm, the blood to yr extremities stays heated as well...but for me it's the opposite, my core is TOO WARM and sweats and I need back and shoulder vents, and it's my arms and hands that need extra covering. I should just make arm-warmers for regular wear, shouldn't I.

It's not all that warm, Laurel, but I walk to work so I don't need much cover. I have a proper parka with furry hood in case the temperature drops. To be honest, last winter was so warm my geraniums all survived being left in their window boxes. They are still in flower just now, actually, as are the roses and hyndrangea. We're all going to climate hell.

Where in London is selling decent medium-to-full length coats at the moment. They seem to be in short supply. Ideally I need one that will look good over a suit, go down at least to the knees and will be wearable in Berlin in December.
