This is the thread to talk about the results trickling in from the Canadian federal election 2004. Newfoundland results starting to come in, with vote counts of like, 11 or 6. Nothing too major yet but it's a-coming.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

And... it's a four-way tie!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

7:21 Liberals leading in 4, Conservatives in 0. That could change at any time because it's still pretty early.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

voting is fun!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

is there a handy website you're checking, sean? cbc or summat?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you vote for the Marijuana Party, s1ocki?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Also http://www.theglobeandmail.com/generated/realtime/specialDecision2004.html

Globe says Liberals leading in 5, Conservative in 1.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Liberals now declared elected in Rnadom-Burin-St.George's, in Newfoundland. Seems rather early for that, but what the heck.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish i had a tv. maybe my neighborhood bar will be broadcasting results.

Symplistic (shmuel), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Conservatives declared elected in St. John's North, another Liberal elected in Humber - St. Barbe - Baie Verte.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Liberals now declared elected in Bonavista-Exploits.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

8pm eastern:
Liberals elected in 5, leading in 11
Conservatives elected in 3, leading in 4
NDP leading in 2

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

halifax - mcdonough is in. no big shock.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you following on TV also, Sean?
CBC says Lib :20, C: 7, NDP:4 (elected or leading)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's great that after the merger of the right and everything - support for the libs has increased on the east coast (as it seems so far).

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, have spent the last hour or so troubleshooting my digital TV terminal. Watching CTV now, but flipping back and forth. Glad the NDP is still doing so well out on the east coast! Elected in three so far!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

After some of Harper's past comments about the Maritimes, it's not a surprise that the Conservatives are faring poorly.

BanjoMania (Brilhante), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rolling"

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say they've also bought into the Liberals "A vote for the NDP is a vote for Harper as PM" rhetoric.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like Harper is suffering from the "culture of defeat" on the east coast.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

So far so good for the PM, but as soon as it hits the Manitoba border it's going to get a hell of a lot tougher for him.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, i don't think so barry. the ndp also seem to be doing beter out east.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

& more good news - scott brison is in.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It's true that the NDP are up 6% in Atlantic Canada from the last election (compared to the Libs 3%) -- but that still doesn't mean that they haven't lost votes to the Liberals.
Look at it this way -- this is a strong region for the NDP, but they have 21% of the popular vote, which is more or less what they poll nationally.
(xpost)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

you're right - the ndp may be down by a seat.
this has been the trend for the ndp of late - more votes (up 6%) and less seats. ontario ndp are in a sad state now as a result.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(the boring part of any election night ... nothing new for some time, nothing decided in the big picture ... time to cook some food, methinks)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't go, Barry! The Bloc are going to be in the lead before too much longer!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

They're on the board -- leading in one seat! Don't worry, I can still hear the TV from the kitchen.

(Rick Mercer just did a monologue and made fun of the voting process. Can you imagine Chris Rock appearing on CNN to do a bit during election night in November? I don't think so. This is reason #87594 why Canada rules)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you vote for the Marijuana Party, s1ocki?

National Pots fans can check http://www.canada.com/national/features/decisioncanada/index.html

sean loves pot!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i think i ended up voting bloc pot in the last (provincial) election!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

scott brison is in
And he just RIPPED into Stephen Harper during his acceptance speech. I changed my mind -- the lifting of the blackout is a positive thing.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That Rick Mercer thing was CLASSIC if only now I can say to friends who didn't vote, "Pffft, you're PRO-EVIL!!!"

Actually, I've never ever smoked pot. I think the National Post editors have smoked their fair share, though, based on some of their headlines over the last few weeks.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, it is looking very early like the strategic voting masses were out in full force.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

only 10 more minutes till the real results start flowing...

chrisco (chrisco), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

goddam i hate the bloc.

chrisco (chrisco), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Right now the NDP is at 7 leading or elected, which is the same as the Conservatives. Whoops, back to 6. Oh well.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: these analysts on CBC (strategists from the respective parties) -- you can tell which party they're with just by LOOKING at them.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

For the benefit of us non-Canadians, what's the difference?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend of mine is running the campaign of the 18yo NDP candidate for Eglington-Lawrence. They're going to get crushed (apparently that's the norm though)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit, the Marxist Leninist party is reported ahead in Mississauge East - Cooksville!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

!!!!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The Marxist-Leninist guy is leading in Missisauga east -- 2 polls reporting!
28-21(xpost!!!)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be incredibly cool if the Marxist-Leninist guy won...not that I think we should go ML up here, but it would certainly be more interesting than those other bozos!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's how to follow the race to see if the commie gets in!
http://www.cbc.ca/canadavotes/riding/155/

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned:
Conservative: early 30's, blond preppy guy with glasses, dapper suit, looks who showed up to his 1st year basket weaving with a laptop and a shirt and tie, while everyone else showed up in shorts and t-shirt with two sheets of paper and a broken pencil.
Liberal : older guy, late 50's, smug facial expressions, looks like one of PM Paul Martin's poker buddies.
New Democrat : mid-40's female, dressed professionally, constantly has a "I'm better than all of you and this petty bickering is above me" look on her face.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Early, early result : Jack Layton is trailing by 38 votes!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That could change dramatically as more polls come in, I think. Most of the neighborhoods I've seen here in Toronto-Danforth have had pretty even signage, but more Layton in a lot of the ridings. There's only 2 ridings in so far...I'm still predicting that my man Jack Layton will rise above all the hatin'.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was just joking around, 36 votes means nothing with 1% of the votes counted ...

Liberals are kicking ass right now in the early results ... if it still looks like this in 20 minutes, the election is over.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Even if Jack doesn't get his own riding, his party's still doing well...and if at the end of the night Harper has to eat shit for his "we'za get a MAJORITY yo" comments, I'll still be happy.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I still don't get how they can declare a candidate "elected" with only 25 out of 180 polls in.

Bloc Quebecois is ahead of Martin!!!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack's still losing by a *lot* with 10 polls reporting ...

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter Mansbridge was just commenting on that...but also noted that that one really depends on which polls are reporting. There's a lot of heavy Mills support in some areas, and some heavy Layton support in others. Could be interesting!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

end of the night Harper has to eat shit
The conservative preppy dipshit on CBC is starting to fluster ...
(xpost ... agreed Sean ... and I think we'll see the same trend in Trinity-Spadina with Chow v Ianno ... Chinatown v Little Italy, etc.)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The Marxist seems to have peaked :(

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Chow v Ianno

You guys are potentially electing Spencer to parliament? It'll be the suavest government body around.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahah, looks like Sheila swung em...the NDP is now ahead of Tony Valeri in Hamilton!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, a Green party candidate ahead in one of the Vancouver Island ridings.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Tony Ianno over Olivia Chow so far. :(

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did Jim Harris run in Toronto-Danforth again? He's getting killed there, going up against two big names. I'm not a fan of "parachuting" candidates into ridings where they don't ordinarily live, but getting your party leader into a riding where he's likely to perform half-decently has to be a priority.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Tony Ianno over Olivia Chow so far. :)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

dude municipal politicians don't get more useless than tony ianno

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I voted party this year.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

CBC just declared a minority win for the Liberals!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I voted party this year.

PARRRRRTY!

Jack is pulling a lot closer now. Could go his way!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

None of the Leninists had jobs, so they all got to vote early.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Tony Valeri DEFEATED by the NDP. YES! That's what you get for effing with Sheila.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Belinda Stronach is running behind the Liberals in Newmarket Aurora so far. Boo hoo.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Are these particularly goofy people, Sean?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack's only behind Dennis Mills by 84 votes now. Go! Go!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

NDP is taking over the Hammer!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, coverage!

http://www.cbc.ca/newscast.html

They're talking about tour boats. Uh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Belinda Stronach is a lifelong do-nothing who inherited the presidency of Daddy's auto parts giant for a few years and decided to run for leader of the Conservative party on the basis of that resume.

However, she did marry (and divorce) multi-gold medalist Johann Olaf Koss, so at least she has that going for her.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure Tony Valeri's an okay guy, Ned, but there was an issue where the prime minister redrew the lines of the ridings in Hamilton, pitting two popular Liberal MPs against each other, one his own guy (Valeri) and one who was more allied with the previous prime minister--his nemesis--basically forcing her (Sheila Copps) out of politics altogether despite her popularity and long service. Her supporters protested this and suggested everyone swing their votes to the NDP.

Stronach is funnier because she's not a politician at all, she just parachuted into politics out of nowhere trying to become the leader of the new Conservative party. She's the star! And she's getting beaten!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(Koss -- Lillehammer '92 speedskating champ turned doctor)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack's now trailing by only 12 votes! 12!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

WOOHOO JACK'S NOW IN THE LEAD YO

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

... but the missus is still getting rocked! I really thought that one would be close.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This is turning out brilliantly ... Liberals in power, with the NDP propping them up and making sure the Liberal actually follow through on their platform instead of letting their heads disappear up their own asses.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yaaaaaaayyyy!

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i was hoping this would happen

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

And Jack's pulling away now.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm surprised olivia is behind tho. i thought that one was a lock for the ndp - more than jack at least. this makes me sad.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Trinity-Spadina has been called ... Ianno wins.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, they're predicting she's lost the riding now, oh well. But it means that we get to keep her all to ourselves in Toronto! It's still a win for Toronto!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yet another reason why Toronto is the heartbeat of Canada!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

right

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

so what did brison say in his speech¿ i had to run to the girlfriends to use her shower and missed it.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Interestingly, the Liberals have 38-39% support nationally, which is about what they had in the last three elections. That's the united right for you.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

He let loose with a long string of profanity on air! No really! Really, though, he just implored voters to vote for the martin agenda and reject Harper's shady ways.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

kindly-looking omar aktouf unfortunately did not take my riding of outremont! i tried!

(but hey only 11 out of 163 polls reporting so far)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Brison's speech wasn't an acceptance speech at all ... he mainly attacked their views on social issues, saying that Stephen Harper wants to rewind the clock 30 years in social policies, etc.
(xpost)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

the ndp is really rocking bc. hurrah!

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"their" = Tory views, of course

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ndp = the balance of power¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

according to cbc, change from 2004:

liberals -2.9%!!!!
conservatives -8.6%!!!!!!

tentative yay!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

layton done it

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack wins !!! (but not by much ... a LOT closer than I thought it would be)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

oh rick mercer you are such a cut-up.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Mercer was definitely the winner of this election.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"The first thing I want Paul Martin to see when he wakes up in the morning is Jack Layton in a speedo coming out of the swimming pool, with Olivia Chow in the kitchen whipping up some smoothies".

Funniest thing I've heard all month.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

peter's right tho - why does mercer always have to be fucking walking during his rants¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

he has a medical condition

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Broadbent just tore CTV News a new asshole ... for saying that he'd give up his seat to Layton in a by-election if need be ... I happened to flip to CTV just as they were discussing that issue, and I thought it sounded a bit suspect (not least because Broadbent wasn't winning by too much at the time).

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh oh, Tony Valeri's gone back into the lead in Hamilton East. What can this mean?????

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

STREET LAW

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Stronach's gone into the lead. Help!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oh crap¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The good news is that Olivia could still pull ahead...she's only behind by 1500 votes, and there are still 100 polls to come in...

Of course, that means Jack could also fall behind.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict that a few people that have already been "elected" will find that they're not, by the end of the night!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"anyone" "specifically"¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Valeri has now been "elected".

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Only" 1500 votes ... that's a huge number. They've got all sorts of probability models for these things, and the likelihood of that sort of turnaround is miniscule.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Somebody get Jack a calculator ... the NDP have NOT doubled their vote number, it's gone up by only ~60%. They have doubled their seats, though.

And people think this guy could have balanced the budget? :)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Valeri did it already, though! C'mon man, I'm holding onto a dream! Don't bum me out!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

not even jack thinks he could balance the budget¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

and what's with that massive phallus mic the cbc gave him¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack ... the election is over, we know the issues, there's no need to pimp the party's platform at five to midnight.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost -- that IS a cartoonishly large mic/dildo.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't concentrate on anything he's saying with that thing waving around infront of his mouth¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

that's kinda shitty - the gay mayor fellow from winnipeg didn't win.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Olivia's closing in...brought Ianno's lead down to 1100 from 1500, and still 60 polls to go.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The gay mayor shoulda run for the NDP instead....he probably would have won.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Or he could have stayed mayor, I think he already won that race.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Proctor could still pull Palliser, in Saskatchewan!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm watching olivia too, sean.
what is "gay mayor" man's name, btw¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Olivia's brought it down to under 1000 now!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The gay mayor is Glen Murray.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Glen Murray was the drummer for Gay Mayor."

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised they haven't called Stonach's seat yet.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear god, did you just SEE Stronach on the see bee see? She looked like a BARBIE DOLL in that hot pink outfit.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought glen murray played for the bruins

xpost - she's mp barbie¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The Trinity-Spadina count hasn't refreshed for a while. I'm sensing monkey business! Inquiry! Inquiry!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks to the citizens of Barrie for not electing the Conservative candidate, even if it was only narrowly. I heard him on the radio in a debate and dear lord was he ever a smug fuck.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a shock.
i'm watching the ndp seat count flip between 21 & 22. what riding is that¿ vancouver island north¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Could be any of a number of these ridings...a lot of ridings are still VERY close, like a couple hundred votes apart. I really don't know how they can be calling a lot of these.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, LIB + NDP seats = 156 right now, only one more than necessary for a govt!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, they just fell behind in North Delta it looks like...

The good news is that the logjam in the results in Trinity-Spadina can only mean a last-minute swelling of support for Olivia!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is the independent MP?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That'd be Chuck Cadman in Surrey North, a former Alliance mp who lost the nomination this time around.

kakak, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh oh, it just dropped to 135 Liberal and 20 NDP.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the Gay Mayor when I was in Winnipeg. But I decided not to get it on with him.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Sean, ... wow, Cadman dominated in his riding.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly you guys understand why I just don't dig Sask lately? (but at least the dangerous fruitcakes like P@nkiw and Sp3nc3r got turfed)

in other news, the first 2 tracks of tM3's new album are really good, and as I write, the third track is maintaining.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The NDP back up to 21....They could still take Palliser in Saskatchewan, it's literally down to a handful of votes. They retook the lead in New Westminster.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's really surprising how many of these ridings are being won with 100 or so votes or less. there are going to be an awful lot of automatic recounts here.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Newton - North Delta is still close in three directions. The NDP was in third recently, and now they're back in the lead. Still a lot of polls to count there though.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Vancouver Island North is now in the Conservatives' hands but only by 4 votes.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops, I'm looking at old data on the Newton North Delta. Looks like it's gone Conservative. Bah.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The logjam has broken in Trinity Spadina! Olivia's closing in! Down to 750 votes!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Palliser's me. I really hope Procter can pull this out.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

or ProctOr even.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

olivia update: less than 300 back¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless the last poll is really heavilly skewed to NDP not likely Huck...it looks like Conservative is 100 seats ahead now instead of just 8.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

oops - that's 3,000¡
shit

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still seeing Olivia about 750 back...?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost obviously

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I just can't believe my province has gone so (seemingly) whole-heartedly to the right. Like without really a stop in the middle. I guess Lorne Calvert is likely to blame. A lot of people are really pissed off at the provincial NDP right now.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

okay she's about 900 away
xpost

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Now it's 1100. DO NOT DOUBT ELECTION PREDICTION PROBABILITY THEORY.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

NOOOOO, Lorne Nystrom lost to another smug grinning Conservative????!?!?!?!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, a grinning little teeny-bopper. but the bonnie and clyde of racism and bigotry, p@nkiw and sp3nc3r are gone, never to be heard from again, and for that, at least, I am thankful (also very thankful that S.H. won't be hiring a moving van)

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Olivia's closing in again, under 1000 votes.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

with 19 polls left - i don't think she's gonna be able to do it man.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Liberal 135, NDP 22. (Bloc 54.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Conservatives 96

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

So, uh, what happens now? Do the Liberals do everything they can to keep the Bloc and NDP onside?
I can't see the NDP siding with the Tories (though they're not really Tories, they're that other thing), and I can't see the Tories siding with the Bloc, so the Liberals, who have always sort of been elected on the basis of their common-groundedness, are in for some hard work.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

grits & ndp. unless there's some shocks in the recounts - that's what we'll have.
and yes. lots n lot of hard hard work.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Not having a majority might at least keep the Liberals a little more honest.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(as in not being kleptos, I meant.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Grits + NDP = 154 now ... one seat short! Well, we'll see if this holds up once the smoke clears and the recounts are done.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

as in now we find out why they call it a whip.

shit, xpost.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

arrgh

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i really wanted hedy fry and john reynolds to lose

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god, fuck the libs for their strategic vote shit, and JESUS CHRIST, FUCK THE GREENS. It's not a simple 1+1, I know, but when Nanaimo-Alberni, Victoria, Vancouver Island-North, New-West-Coq, are decided by so little, a massive amount of blame needs to be sent in the way of that bunch of status-quo, eco-capitalist, immature, unanalytical, oppositionally-defiant dolts.

blech. I'm in Van-East, which Libby took by a landslide, which was heartening. I spent 14 hours scrutineering in a pool that we won by some 85 percent. fun times.

LIB+NDP = 154
CON+BLOC = 153

CHUCK CADMAN = THE FATE OF THIS PARLIAMENT.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

he used to be reform or something, didn't he¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yup.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

christ.

so are we going to see a recount anywhere¿ could the status of any seat change¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Proctor's officially out.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

New-West-Coq was settled by 45 votes. I'm not sure what the rules are concerning automatic recounts, but that one surely qualifies.
But has any seat in a recent election turned after a recount? I can't recall -- they're pretty good at getting these things right.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

what should be interesting is to see if the goddamned newspapers (and other media) finally get off the pollsters' cocks.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

any result with less than a .1% difference gets recounted. so if there were 50,000 votes counted, a 50 vote difference would mean a mandatory recount.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"New-West-Coq"

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

fucking idiot vote-splitting paul martin moherfucking. It would have taken a very small difference to make this election much much better. The BQ certainly is being gentlemanly about their new omnipotence, though: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20040629.elduceppe29/BNStory/specialDecision2004/

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, anyone know if there are any recounts going on?

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i think there's 3-5 that should be getting recounted but when that happens i have no idea.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yep, recounts in New-West-Coq(heh) and Western Arctic, which was only a 52 vote difference, I believe, between the Libs and NDP.

and the NDP shutout in Sask. Crazy.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

crazy shitty

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

BC results bode well for our provincial race next May, though. We were a close second in all the island seats we didn't win, and were close too in the Kootenays. Strong second places through the lower Mainland, esp. Surrey, are heartening.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the left-of-right needs to unite now to stop all the vote-splitting that will inevitably lead to a Stephen Harper majority.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
derrick made some very accurate predictions on this thread
