Six green bottles hanging on the wall...

:(

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Then I came along and drank from them all.

Or not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Argh, couldn't find a place for you in the title. Unless you're shrinking. Are you shrinking?

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Not necessarily?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:55 (twenty years ago)

*grumble*

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Then you are not eligible for inclusion in a thread title regarding shrinkage. I HAVE LITTLE TIME OR PANTS FOR DISCUSSIONS OF THIS NATURE.

where pants = patience

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Mike, I feel yer angst. (But not that way.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:59 (twenty years ago)

I'd loudly declare something along the lines of 'DEATH TO ((CERTAIN ILXORS))! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!', but I don't want to raise more of a storm than there is currently.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:00 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand the current storm, and I'm too scared to get involved. Sounds bad though. Kate's cool.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, well, just fear the acronym ESOJ.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:03 (twenty years ago)

Actually, it just seems that every problem that everyone on this board has had with anybody ever has been acted upon under the cover of Jon Williams and his huge ass pictures. There's a new board been formed, some ILXOR's have gone bugfuck fighting fire with fire and other ILXOR's have been having little breakdowns.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Eeek, one of my pooh sticks got answered by someone who knows what the topic means. I don't. Uh oh.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:07 (twenty years ago)

this is fucked

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:08 (twenty years ago)

It's been rough, Mikey. I will, however, counsel patience.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:09 (twenty years ago)

{SEAN BEAN}

Give me the ring and together we can defeat the Enemy!

{/SEAN BEAN}

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Well, if I wasn't so glum, I'd do a victory lap right now.

I think we should assume that the situation between two people we all like very much is entirely their business, and though we don't like it, we can be patient, as Ned says, and in the meantime grant them their privacy.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Very wisely observed, Mr. Mole.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:14 (twenty years ago)

What do you do when you're supposed to find something urgently because millions of dollars per hour is at stake, but you can't find it, and you can't find a way of finding it?

Assuming I care of course, which I don't.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Ask us. Wot you looking for?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Some shit in a massive fuck-off database that doesn't work properly.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:17 (twenty years ago)

start a poohstick. its a win-win situation!

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:18 (twenty years ago)

hahaha yes. I mean, we're tied aren't we? This is the final round!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:21 (twenty years ago)

I guess I'm just tired of Internet tantrums. Why can't these people get drunk and get into a fight like normal people instead of splurging their insanity across the bandwidth?

It used to be that people would be all, 'Hey, things are rotten with my life in this area', finish up at the Cotton Mill then drink a fuck'pennies worth of Gin and fight the biggest sailor they could find down by the docks. Your problems seemed that much more insignificant when you were digging broken teeth out of your jaw on a ship bound for the Cape of Good Hope.

I'm kidding, but only just.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:22 (twenty years ago)

There's one guy I know in person who hates me in real life, as a result of an internet argument about fish or something. I still don't know what that was all about.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:24 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps you didn't know your plaice.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Dude, you wanna see some crazyfuck internet arguments, you go to Livejournal, specifically LJ Drama.

As a gesture of goodwill to all my Australian homies on this wintry Thursday afternoon, have some drum and bass.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:29 (twenty years ago)

Also, I think that this thread is at is pike. If you don't think so, you have no sole. I don't want to carp on about it.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:30 (twenty years ago)

Hey, it's hardly my fault if he's breaming over with belligerence.

Drum & bass rocks my world.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:31 (twenty years ago)

There's no need to be a snapper - do you hake fun?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:32 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I'm just pissed because I can't find my guitar tuna, I'm no Flake. Do you want to to put this down in Whiting?

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:34 (twenty years ago)

You're all just doing this for the halibut.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:34 (twenty years ago)

Goscinny & Uderzo to thread!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:36 (twenty years ago)

These Australians are crazy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:37 (twenty years ago)

I can't think of any more fish names. Yes I'm floundering.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:40 (twenty years ago)

It's not very ex sardine.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:41 (twenty years ago)

Well at least Col's having a whale of a time.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:45 (twenty years ago)

and the poipose of all this?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:49 (twenty years ago)

Quiet, shrimp.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:55 (twenty years ago)

The porpoise of this is to smelt out our soles, and thereby get closer to Cod.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:56 (twenty years ago)

Jesus Gaz. It's faux naif rhetoric like yours that makes me crabby.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:56 (twenty years ago)

Nonsense, gaz's contribution is quite whelkome.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh like you're not toadying to Gaz or anything.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:02 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I parrot everything he says - I'm a weak-ling.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:04 (twenty years ago)

Parrot's not a water animal. Go back to school.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:06 (twenty years ago)

urge to krill...RISING

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:08 (twenty years ago)

Parrot's not a water animal. Go back to school.
-- The Ghost at Number Almanac

Hey yeah, you're right! And the sun isn't either - not to mention the cucumber, the dog, the cat or the snake.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:09 (twenty years ago)

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:40 (twenty years ago)

DON'T ALL LEAVE WHEN I'M LISTENING TO THE HOT ROCK! YOU'LL MAKE ME WAIL IN THE COMPUTER LAB! IT IS NOT PRETTY!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait, wrong joke.

Hello from last year *waves*

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:44 (twenty years ago)

(i'll leave now, so that gaz will stay)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:44 (twenty years ago)

WELCOME, TO THE WORLD, OF THE FUTURE!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:45 (twenty years ago)

So bored... have to set up 15 new ISDN connections in a day and a half for this bigass Transport company who are a HUGE client of ours, and it is so tedious clicking on the same options and links and typing in the data for 15 links... AARGH.

In better news I found out I will get 15 grand or more (mostly tax free) if I take my redundancy. WOO HOO.

xpost isnt it "WELCOME TO THE WORRRLLLD OF TOMORROW!" ? ;)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it prob is actually. I tend to be stoned when I watch "Futurama", you see. Good news, everyone! I'm a horse's butt!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:48 (twenty years ago)

and what a fine one you are.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:49 (twenty years ago)

Futurama tends not to be that flirty!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Sadly.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:54 (twenty years ago)

Mmm stoned Futurama watching. Add popcorn and you have Trayce's fave nite in.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 1 July 2004 03:28 (twenty years ago)

If anyone wants me I'll be in The Angry Dome.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 03:41 (twenty years ago)

"And Fry you have that brain thing!"
"I already did!"

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 1 July 2004 03:53 (twenty years ago)

'We love you Bender honey'
'Shut up baby, I know it'

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Now I want a Futurama marathon FAP at my place.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 1 July 2004 03:57 (twenty years ago)

"Hey baby... wanna kill all humans?" Trayce me and my dear friend should be in Melbourne sometime this year, so if you fancy doing that a bit etc

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 03:58 (twenty years ago)

Futurama FAP. Ahhh. Add chocolate and beer and I will die happy.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 04:01 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah! I would so be up for hosting a Furutama Mega-FAP at mine, especially if you'll be over visiting Andrew! That'd rool. If people weren't weirded out by visiting my home that is. I know Jim loves his Futurama too, as does my other 'alf, so yeah.

Beer, chocolate, hell, chocolate ice cream, popcorn, more beer, vodka, ... this could be dangerous.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:03 (twenty years ago)

Furutama Mega-FAP

Aha, sounds like a manga enemy. FURU-TAMA!! MEGA-FAP!!

Have you got all the DVDs, Trayce?

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:08 (twenty years ago)

I most certainly do! All 4 box-sets :D

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:16 (twenty years ago)

Well yeah that's the plan but I'm crap at plans, wish us luck, and thanks for the invite

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 07:08 (twenty years ago)

Two week downtime? This calls for a contingency plan, stat.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 July 2004 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Go out and have parties.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 20:34 (twenty years ago)

wish me happy birthday guys

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 21:22 (twenty years ago)

HI gaz! Even though I'm strictly a lurker on these threads, happy birthday, you good thing you.

Are there any good gigs in Sydneyland from around the 15th to the 20th. Ish?

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 1 July 2004 21:24 (twenty years ago)

lets ask col. i'm on hols then edward. we should catch up!

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 21:26 (twenty years ago)

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Yes, apparently you could see an awful lot of my arm and the back of my head.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 1 July 2004 21:29 (twenty years ago)

haha. what famous person did you tell that fan you were?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Sarah Whatmore. He understood.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 1 July 2004 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Happy the birthday! May there be many more. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 21:37 (twenty years ago)

The next door neighbour's kid just said: "My daddy dressed up as a girl. They he said, 'Ooooh, I'm a girl!!' Then blah! He vomit."

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 21:40 (twenty years ago)

haha. col its the last day of ilx and edward might be coming to sydney in a fortnight do you know of any gigs?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago)

kind of a scary story, there, Colin!

Skottie, Thursday, 1 July 2004 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Not might, gaz, will. It's set in stone, suckaz.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 1 July 2004 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Edward, can I suggest you ask whether there are anny Syd gigs on Mono?

http://mono.net/discussion.asp

They'll throw a thousand suggestions at you.

My band's playing on 11th and 22nd, so I can't guilt trip you into that one.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Depending on what happens in the next few days, I might go up a few days later and thus leave a few days later, in which case I am quite amenable to being guilt-tripped.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:33 (twenty years ago)

OK then!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Before the ILE outage, here's the details - club 77, 77 william st, Old D*s Peres, Ch*rry2000 (us), M*ink Engin*. The night's called Dr*pping Wet P*ssy.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:40 (twenty years ago)

thats a catchy name for a night.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Unforgettable hey?

Oh yeah, that's the 22 July one. My birthay. I'll be so offended if you don't come.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:44 (twenty years ago)

OK. You have to come to Canberra and see my band play, then.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:58 (twenty years ago)

What are they called???

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Had you there, I do not have a band, so you've dodged a bullet there.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:08 (twenty years ago)

bit early to be drunk edward!

gaz (gaz), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:14 (twenty years ago)

But you are from Canberra, yes?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm not drunk. But perhaps I should be, because regrettably, I am in Canberra.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:19 (twenty years ago)

My gf is Canberran.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Are you trying to rescue her from this place?

(actually, it's not so bad here)

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Most of her friends ended up in Syd or Melb, but some are still there. I enjoy going back with her, to visit her mum and sometimes do the odd gig.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:25 (twenty years ago)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GAZ YA BARSTOOL!

Youre a Canberran Edward? Or just visiting?

This ex-Canberran says "I am very sorry" ;P

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:26 (twenty years ago)

Transitional year. Moved from Queensland in January, likely to be moving to Wollongong early next year.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Ah crap, I'll never escape these threads now.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:27 (twenty years ago)

gaz (gaz), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:34 (twenty years ago)

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 2 July 2004 01:40 (twenty years ago)

Janne Karlsson, Friday, 2 July 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
shall we continue the foolishness...or has everyone come to a realisation over the break?

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 17 July 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago)

I came to several realisations. I might even come to another one soon, if I can just muster the energy.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 17 July 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago)

*hmmm...putting broccoli in these pancakes was a mistake*

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 17 July 2004 07:44 (twenty years ago)

That sounds quite unappetising.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 17 July 2004 08:17 (twenty years ago)

yes, more so when cold.

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 17 July 2004 08:19 (twenty years ago)

Anything else? Cheese? Mushrooms? Rice? I think you may have been heading in a blintz direction.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 17 July 2004 08:26 (twenty years ago)

Then again, I just found this:

http://www.drweil.com/app/cda/drw_cda.html-command=Recipe-pt=Recipe-recipeId=10076

Broccoli Pancakes

Even if your kids don't like broccoli, they will eat these pancakes. You can serve them as a side dish with the Thai Shrimp Brochette, alongside the Mock Sour Cream; however, they are certainly a meal on their own if you want to serve them as an entree.

1 large head broccoli
1/4 cup coarsely chopped onion
1/2 small hot chili pepper or 1 teaspoon chili paste
1 large garlic clove, peeled and sliced
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2/3 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/8 teaspoon dried dill weed
1 pinch salt
1 large egg or 2 egg whites
1/4 cup low-fat milk
A sprinkling of paprika

MOCK SOUR CREAM
1 cup plain non-fat yogurt
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice
1/2 small onion or large shallot, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce, or to taste
Sprinkling of chopped fresh dill

Cut the florets off the head of the broccoli and separate them by cutting the large ones in half so they are all more or less the same size. You should have about 3 cups. Discard the stalks, or save them along with any remaining florets to use in soup or a vegetable stir-fry.

Bring 1/2 cup water to a boil in a medium pan, then drop in the broccoli florets, cover, and let steam as they cook, for 3 minutes. Strain in a colander.

Put the steamed broccoli, onions, chili and garlic in a food processor and pulse on and off to chop (do not puree the vegetables), or chop by hand. Transfer the chopped ingredients to a mixing bowl and stir in the oil, flour, dill, and salt. Add the egg or egg whites and milk and mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon. Smear the bottom of a large, nonstick skillet with 1/4 teaspoon of butter and set it over medium heat for about 1 minute. Drop tablespoons of the batter into the hot skillet, placing them far enough apart so that the pancakes don't touch, and cook over low to medium heat for about 1 minute. Turn the pancakes and cook the other side for 1 minute. Transfer them to a hot platter to keep warm while you continue making the rest until all the batter is used up.

Mix all of the ingredients for the Mock Sour Cream together and spoon 1 teaspoonful on top of each pancake, then top with a sprinkle of paprika.

Heh.

Hi everyone!

You might remember me from such ILX posts as "I was bored aand drunk, so I rambled shit in here" and "please help me its 2am and I cant sleep".

These days I seem to be actually busy with work, and the leave of absence found me playing Sim City. I mean REALLY PLAYING IT.

I've somewhat got bored of reading loads of fora, but I'll do my best to try and at least keep up.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:25 (twenty years ago)

It was shit to be frank. I came fourth, which did not make me happy. Luck deserted me, bah humbug.

Mini rant? I think not, my rants are fully developed and they are like my children.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:28 (twenty years ago)

So you're abandoning us too Trayce? For Sim City?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:35 (twenty years ago)

good morning fellow australians.

purple patch (electricsound), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:42 (twenty years ago)

mini as in short edward ;-)

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm with Trayce, this forum gubbins has lost its charm on me. Not just ILx, all fora. Heh, fora.

I need a smoke.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Not abandoning, nah :) Workdays I might still pop the occasional blab in 'ere.

I just dont feel Ive anything much to say lately... had a birrova rough patch.

Still! I'll get better. I'm reading Don Watson's "Death Sentence" at the mo and its a cracking good read.

xpost - yeah same ere Ad. I didnt even go online all this weekend. I spent it on SimCity and playing that new Scene It! game (which is fucking excellent).

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:53 (twenty years ago)

Hi Jim! Howd the gig this weekend go btw. Soz I havent caught up. Been a bit in the doldrums lately, me.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:54 (twenty years ago)

and hello to you all.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:55 (twenty years ago)

We went away! Travelled all over the countryside &c.

xpost: Me too. Winter has a lot to do with it, though clearly not everything.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:56 (twenty years ago)

the gig went quite well, and we're finishing mixing this coming weekend, so a period of great relaxation is imminent. i'm getting into going out more and starting to read again, which is nice.

purple patch (electricsound), Monday, 19 July 2004 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Adam: Indeed. Me thinking of seeing some kind of psychoanalist if this keeps up, I'm sick of my hideous mood swings and manic obsessiveness and coping with it all in wrong ways and argh argh.

I need to start reading and writing a lot more as well Jim. I think I'll grab some Hemmingway and Mailer and stuff and get into the economic grumpy old men stuff.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 July 2004 00:03 (twenty years ago)

Hope the pic works.

Mr. Electric Purple Sound Patch of Jim, do you recognise this wonderful support act at my EP launch? Of course you do. We bought the 7" you put out as well.

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Monday, 19 July 2004 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps you should Trayce, if only to get an outsider's point of view. That alone can be more useful than anything.

I guess I'm fortunate in that I know exactly what's causing all my problems, but I can't change it, which fucking pisses me off. And I'm sick of whinging about it.

That's the Way (uh huh uh huh) I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 July 2004 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Ad: yeah, the main prob is I cant afford a shrink (I'd love to see a Jungian analyst, I think it'd be really interesting.. but I dont have health insurance). Last shrink I did see was a proper psych and theyre really just brain doctors "here take this Prozac". Nuh uh, not going THERE again. Useless.

I'd ask why you cant change whatevers wrong but you probably dont want to say online eh?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 July 2004 00:29 (twenty years ago)

oh my sweet mongrels and sheepfuxors! no amount of fun in the real world will ever demagnetise these threads for me.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 19 July 2004 00:41 (twenty years ago)

Ah, yes, the money problem. I know it well. My health insurance cover doesn't fund psychology for some reason, so I had to stop that.

Psychiatrists are shit. They're medical doctors, so most of them give you drugs. Psychologists aren't doctors so they have no such power.

What's my problem? It's my job. It's shit. No pay rise for anyone in four or five years [I've lost count], everyone gets treated like shit unless they're a senior manager, and there's literally no chance for advancement unless I want to be something like a wanky salesperson. I've spent so long working in the wrong direction, doing jobs that I hate and am crap at, that I can't get out and do what I want to do. Having applied for seventy hundred billion jobs and not got anywhere, I really am trapped in hell, and it really does get worse every single day, and in all seriousness that's not an exaggeration. But the worst bit is when I talk about it to someone, and they go 'ah well, things will get better soon.' They fucking don't. Ever.

That's why psychology and drugs can't help.

That's the Way (uh huh uh huh) I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 July 2004 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Aw man, I totally know that pain :(

I have a friend whos just come over here from perth. Shes young - 21 or 22 maybe? - and desperately needing work, trying to just get a foot in the door doing anything at all. Thing is, shes a good writer, very individual gothy type, lots of personality. She could do and be anything, yet she's been applying for these full on admin jobs where they tell her she must wear proper suits, conservative shoes, hair up, the lot!

She's now found a really cool job working at Galactic Circus where she gets to dress up whacky, play the games and get thecustomers all fired up all night long, and she has a ball.

Why is she now thinking of going for a shitty ISP helpdesk job?

Why do we do this to ourselves? I see 21 year old me in her and I want to yell NO DONT DO IT! (I have, actually), because I wish someone had done that to me at 21.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. If I'd turned down the job offer for this place seven years ago, I wouldn't be in hell now. But I wouldn't have met my wife either.

That's the Way (uh huh uh huh) I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and my job's a shitty helpdesk job. She's fucking nuts. Shake her.

That's the Way (uh huh uh huh) I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:20 (twenty years ago)

See? these fora ain't so bad...

gaz (gaz), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. I like this one because there's comparatively little megabitching and intolerance. Having spend the past six years defending myself against fucktards who don't like my opinion about something totally insignificant, and therefore see fit to spend the ensuing weeks/months abusing me, I'm over it. This forum's pleasant and congenial.

That's the Way (uh huh uh huh) I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:32 (twenty years ago)

I agree. This is a fine forum, and I have nothing bad to say about it.

HOw come kicked out?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:48 (twenty years ago)

did you deserve it?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm a part-time student obv, which means I do evening subjects. Usually it starts at 6pm so people who work during business hours can get there. This subject's latest tute was 5pm, which stuffs me up hugely, but it's the latest on offer.

I just checked the allocations, and the 5pm tute's gone. The latest is 4pm, and they're all full, but I can't get there at 4pm anyway. It starts THIS WEDNESDAY. I've just moved mountains to change my work hours so I could get off early on Wednesdays, and at the very last minute they go and do this. Fangry.

That's the Way (uh huh uh huh) I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:56 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but are there other options to explore? Have a chat to the course coordinator.

gaz, did I do a gig? I know I've got one on July 22 at Club 77 WHICH IS MY BIRTHDAY.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago)

This whole semester's fucked so far. It officially starts today, and it's today that I discovered this fuck-up [I last checked on Wednesday and everything was fine].

On top of that, our results came out on Thursday last week, which gives us a whole 1.5 days to change subjects accordingly if we failed something.

Usually Monash is really organised. I don't get it.

xpost: Yeah Gaz, but I've got until next Friday, and I'll have missed the first 1-2 weeks of whatever subject I change to. Some subjects mark things in the first week, so I could be penalised for Monash's cock-up.

I'm not quite sure myself.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 05:18 (twenty years ago)

Let me put it like this: it is ironic when a completely electronic act (with vocals) is not considered 'electro', but meandering jazz-funk with samples (and vocals) is. It weren't like this back in 1981, I tellz ya. Back then, electro were harsh and mental, and if there were vocals, they were pissed off and paranoid, not singing about bloody Coco shining her bloody raven hair.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 12:16 (twenty years ago)

And so you should. It reveals your inner geekiness - I should know, I never tell people about my chess championship past - d'oh!

I'll tell you something though, this friend of ours has an American boyfriend who's a bit of a Wire -style turntablist music star. Well, when he found out I was a chess player, that was the end of any normal social interaction - game after game, right through Christmas Eve, and beyond. He would not stop setting up the goddam board. He was really good too, it wasn't pleasant. He would find chess boards everywhere - even in the shopping mall. Then he'd drawl, 'Uh, yeah, we seem to be condemned to play chess forever... I believe the white pieces are mine on this occasion?'

I havent, no... I dont know if I could a) do meditation and b) stick to it. I have a terribly overactive, obsessive, noisy mind. I cannot shut down very easily. I also dont have much discipline when it comes to sticking to things like going to a yoga class or whatever.

I dunno...

xpost hahahaha ;P

Codeine's actually banned in some countries. I don't know much about it, much less that it can be addictive. Wow.

That's the Way (uh huh uh huh) I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 22 July 2004 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah its a mild narcotic, in the same fambily as 'eroin.

There isnt even a "this can be habit-forming" warning on the fucking packaging, and there SHOULD be. Apparently panadiene abuse is quite common among teenage girls.

Which makes me feel so much better about the stupid thing of course, dunnit. ;)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 22 July 2004 02:52 (twenty years ago)

habit forming != addictive

Whys the tardis pic make you pee yrself? Im confused (that aint hard).

They're shooting the new one this week. Like, THIS WEEK. Like, for the first time since I was 15. And, like, there's a whacking great TARDIS stood on some high street being filmed, like, TODAY.

Hey did you go hire out the Tom Baker chatathon video from Video Flash like I told you to the other week? ;P

Yes! It was boring. They'd play a clip of him getting attacked by cardboard fish people or something, then they'd cut to him going 'umm... I don't remember... honestly I don't remember anything about that. Sorry.' Repeat ad inifinitum FOR THREE HOURS. Mental.

I got the Colin Baker one too. He spent the whole tape using big words and saying 'dear old thing' heaps.

That's the Way (uh huh uh huh) I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 22 July 2004 05:11 (twenty years ago)

what was that, "be your own stereotype hour" or sommat? heh.

I actually found the end of the Tom Baker one very sad - there was this point where he dwelled on how Dr Who was the hilight of his career, how he's done very little since, he's really only known for that... and he sort of trails off and looks SO TERRIBLY LOST.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 22 July 2004 05:30 (twenty years ago)

My brain's broken.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 23 July 2004 03:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh, you guys are gonna love this story.

You all know how a bunch of us is being made redundant, right? Well. Every few months the company holds this "roadshow" which is a kind of "what we're up to at **PT" thing. They always have a lame theme - Effie the first time (obv), last time it was superheroes (uh, ok..).

The theme this time? Survivor. As in the show.

I fucking shit you not. They didn't even realise the horrible horrible unintentional "joke".

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 23 July 2004 03:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh fuck. How fucking incredibly fucking infuckingsensitive. Does your management have any kind of clue at all?

My work's done no pay rises or bonuses or ANYTHING since 2000, and they even stopped doing christmas parties completely. Earlier this year they gave us all these wank mouse pads telling us how fun it is to work here, complete with a picture of people having a party. A PARTY.

That's the Way (uh huh uh huh) I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 23 July 2004 03:53 (twenty years ago)

OMG thats so sad its hilarious.

We were told it was "mandatory" to GO TO THE XMAS PARTY. No wait, how was it worded? "I need not remind you all attendance at this party is not optional" or something. Apparrntly that upper manager got a lot of shit for that one.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 23 July 2004 03:56 (twenty years ago)

a fake CEO's newsletter or two were recently circulated here. it was like being a naughty schoolboy again reading them. those responsible were taken outside and shot.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 23 July 2004 04:00 (twenty years ago)

xpost: Hah. They're always telling us to go to dumb things here, and people don't go and nobody notices.

Today we got an email from the HR department, saying 'we don't have many performance appraisal reports from employees, they're months overdue, please send them immediately.' This, from a company that doesn't pay us properly, gives us no kind of career path, and now literally grabs great wads of employees and chucks them in jobs they're good at and don't even like. WTF good is submitting a fucking performance appraisal report going to do?? Get us a pay rise??

Fucking spacktards.

That's the Way (uh huh uh huh) I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 23 July 2004 04:00 (twenty years ago)

gaz (gaz), Friday, 23 July 2004 04:04 (twenty years ago)

A sense of humour is important for morale and improves efficiency in the achievement of the teams's ongoing goals. I myself am noted for my sense of humour and am able to match the joke to the skills and cultural background of the person to whom I am adressing my joke, taking into account all relebvant timeframes and appropriate technology, including spreadsheets, email and daily planners. I reframe jokes to take into account change in the workplace, and hold meetings to assess the effect of my jokes, taking on board constructive criticisms, and managing upwards where required. I am also a great practical joker and love to make people sick on the inside with my viciously acerbic wit, upturning their stupid world with my black humour and cutting sense of irony.

Fuck yeah.

I also found out how many people are sniping at other people because of things the company's done. I'm constantly pissed off, but at least I don't take it out on anyone. Having my head in the sand all day, I've missed out on all the fighting. It's like Parliament Question Time in this place.

Sorry to whinge in this thread again but I NEED TO WHINGE.

Last week we finally settled on a Wednesday 5pm tute. Since then, nothing about it has shown up on any website. Yesterday I emailed the lecturer asking what's happening, and she replied telling me to turn up to the 4pm tute, and if enough people want a 5pm tute they'll do one.

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

It's now WEEK TWO, and we STILL don't have a tute time. I can't get there at 4pm, and I'm willing to bet 95% of the other part-time students can't get there at 4pm either. I've just organised my work roster around Wednesday nights and they fuck me over like this. It's fucking the second week of semester, all this shit should be sorted out by now.

I replied telling her to be a bit bloody realistic. If I don't get a firm answer out of her I'm going directly to the head of faculty.

Hi Almy!

He's a musician, very talented one, and the sole member of Browning Mummery.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, welcome to academia. I ain't never going back there. The phrase 'it's academic' - what does that mean? I discovered the hard way.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Hah. Monash is usually good though. This is my 14th subject, and it's the first to fuck up this badly.

Browning Mummery? Sounds like incest.

That's the Way (uh huh uh huh) I Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 22:47 (twenty years ago)

It's actually the name of an Australian opera singer, but he liked it so much he adopted it for his band name. Here's some more info:

If you can get hold of an album by BM called 'Obiter Scripta', that's one of the best dark ambient records ever made.

Dilemma 2: The Terrorist

A terrorist is holding you and over 100 students at gunpoint in the school hall. You have good reason to believe that, while mad, she always keeps her word. She says that she plans to kill everybody, including you. However, she will spare everyone except the young child whose hand you are holding, as long as you kill him.

Should you kill him? Why (not)?

What if the child has an incurable terminal illness that will painfully end his life very soon?

Would it make a difference if there were 1,000,000 lives in the balance?

What if the child is the terrorist’s?

What if the child is yours?

I said let the kid die, seems like the obvious choice.

Katherine Alice O'Brien (ipsofacto), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:03 (twenty years ago)

I hate moral dilemmas like this. How would I know if I'd kill the kid? It won't even be an issue unless it happens, and the probability's so negligible that it's not even worth considering.

Should you kill him? Why (not)?

Depends who he is. If he's my son, probably not. If he's some shit who just tried to run me over, I might consider it.

What if the child has an incurable terminal illness that will painfully end his life very soon?

I'd kill him.

Would it make a difference if there were 1,000,000 lives in the balance?

No.

What if the child is the terrorist’s?

I'd kill him.

What if the child is yours?

I'd kill myself and miss the ending.

What disturbed monga thought this up anyway?

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:21 (twenty years ago)

Here you go, you can do my homework too if you like :)

Dilemma 1: The Lake

You see two children drowning, both having fallen through the thin ice of a frozen lake. They are the same distance from you, but 50m apart. It is clear that you can only save one. One is your child.

Which child do you save? Why?

What if your child has disabilities that require constant care and make a full and happy life unlikely, and the other is a gifted musical and mathematical prodigy and a delightful child as well?

Does it make any difference if: You have 7 other children and the other drowning child is the only child of a couple that went through IVF for 15 years before conceiving.

Alternatively, what if both children are yours?

x-post, nope only the options presented.

Katherine Alice O'Brien (ipsofacto), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:23 (twenty years ago)

Which child do you save?

Mine.

Why?

DUH, because it's mine.

What if your child has disabilities that require constant care and make a full and happy life unlikely, and the other is a gifted musical and mathematical prodigy and a delightful child as well?

I'd save the nondisabled one.

Does it make any difference if: You have 7 other children and the other drowning child is the only child of a couple that went through IVF for 15 years before conceiving.

No. If it's that important to them, they should be watching their own fucking kid.

Alternatively, what if both children are yours?

Save the closest/easiest one.

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:26 (twenty years ago)

That's pretty much the conclusion I came to, however the children are apparently the same distance away from you so there really isn't an easier one. What I wonder about is the method of rescue, are you likely to put yourself in danger saving these stupid kids?

Apparently the reason why we're doing this is because of how it plays into teaching. For instance, one kid might benefit from a lot of one on one time however if you spend this time, the other 20+ students you're teaching miss out. So do you save one and hurt the rest of trying to help the majority and let that one kid suffer?

Katherine Alice O'Brien (ipsofacto), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:30 (twenty years ago)

that was meant to read or try to help the majority and let that one kid suffer

Katherine Alice O'Brien (ipsofacto), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:33 (twenty years ago)

Here's another one based on a classroom situation:

What do you do if you're in a art class and a kid makes a bong and says "'[The bong] isn’t for me, I’m making it for my mum.'

The last person I asked about this to said "ask if she sells?".

Katherine Alice O'Brien (ipsofacto), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:41 (twenty years ago)

Hahah.

Toby the next door 4 yr old is having a sleepover tonite. Her and SJ are in their beds listening to the Mr Men CD and laughing hysterically every few minutes. Earlier, we turned out all the lights and went ballistic to some house music, dancing like crazy.

I wonder how Di's gig is going? She'll be on stage soonish.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:33 (twenty years ago)

Di is so sweet. I can't wait to see her in December. I hope her gig is going well.

The sleepover sounds fun Colin :)

Katherine Alice O'Brien (ipsofacto), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:45 (twenty years ago)

Those two are not sleeping. That much is certain. I have no urge to go in and get all scary parent on their asses though. Let them have their fun.

Did I tell you this before? SJ said, "But rules don't walk, so why should we follow them?' - I think I did tell you, but it's still blowing my mind 2 weeks later.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Have ya seen the 'Mummery yet Kate? And what you been painting of late?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember you telling me but it sounds wonderful for sure. Sounds like you're rearing quite the philosopher/deep thinker there.

No mummery yet, small black box is only once a month and he's Augusts feature. Sounds quite interesting though. I'm currently working on a sound piece for my intermedia class, it's a lot harder than I thought to reconcile what I hear in my head and what I can actually produce at the end of the day.

I now have a pre-amp though which is helping out amazingly. My condenser mic has a phantom power source set-up, so it's also quite nice to be able to pick up more fragile kind of sounds now. (I was unable to use the condenser mic before now)

Katherine Alice O'Brien (ipsofacto), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah what the f*ck is phantom power? My desk has it. I sometimes turn it on, sometimes turn it off, all the time wondering what it is? it sounds like something you'd want if you were into dungeons and dragons.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:57 (twenty years ago)

uhh...well usually my condenser mic uses a very odd battery indeed to run, in fact so odd i've not been able to locate the type in Australia, however due to the phantom power source the mic when plugged in via the pre-amp draws its power from there, therefore negating the use of any battery strange or not.

Katherine Alice O'Brien (ipsofacto), Friday, 30 July 2004 11:01 (twenty years ago)

Aha. And thereby does the cunning mic derive its power. From a phantom.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 30 July 2004 11:04 (twenty years ago)

something like that. All I know is mic-ing my vocals has become about a million times easier and clearer.

Phantom Power Source (ipsofacto), Friday, 30 July 2004 11:05 (twenty years ago)

Why are you on this thing? Similarly mundane computer-related commitments?

reading glasses = non prescription?

how was the arsehole at works last day? did you have a party?

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 31 July 2004 05:17 (twenty years ago)

Nah, prescription. I had my eyes tested on a whim, and three hours later I walk out with $360 fucking glasses. A highly recommended way to spend a Saturday morning.

Arsehole's got another week to go, but I've got that week off, which is excellent timing because I don't have to go to the bloody farewell lunch. It's not possible to eat and see/hear that thing at the same time.

Splitting wood? For a fire? Building? Fun? Competition? Matchstick factory?

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 31 July 2004 05:20 (twenty years ago)

yeah for a fire. horrific great redwood things that i have to really lay into and which never split fresh and nice. burns good though (we have a pot belly...courtesy the previous owners. can't afford to swap it for a slow combustion)

$360 glasses! photos pls!

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 31 July 2004 05:24 (twenty years ago)

Can't yet, they're not ready until next week.

$260 funky thick black Mooks frames
+ $100 lenses
= $360
- $200 health insurance rebate
= $160

...which isn't too bad really. I think you have to pay a bit for glasses. The optometry bloke said my eyes aren't likely to deteriorate quickly, so I should get a half-decent frame that'll last a while.

Oooh, pot belly. We grew up with a pot belly. Dad had a woodstove too. Bastard bloody thing to keep stoked though. Once we got central heating the woodstove seized up from disuse.

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 31 July 2004 05:30 (twenty years ago)

yeah its a bastard to keep the potbelly in wood for the winter.

my eyes have stopped getting worse for now. except in 3-4 years i am expected to probably need bi focals. then i will know i'm old.

$160 isn't too bad. esp if you got some frames you like. are they emo?

SJ was was a bit freaked out at first but quickly got into the swing - 'they're scary, but they're cool'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 31 July 2004 11:02 (twenty years ago)

It strikes me that this is the sort of conversation that some of our US and UK cousins find uninteresting - because it's trivial. Unlike, say, discussions about the semiotics of crunk.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 31 July 2004 11:03 (twenty years ago)

I tell you - goths really appreciate it when passersby compliment their dress, more than anything. The old fashioned code of bowing and yea verily still applies for some odd reason.

I'm horribly sterotyping goths saying this but some do follot it nontheless.

Ive had a loveley evening drinking and watching Deep Impact and taking the piss out of it (ok it has its good points), and futurama... nice and relaxing.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 31 July 2004 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Aha, Deep Impact.

Last night's television was a complete wash-out. That evergreen stalwart of Saturday night entertainment, Chartbusting '80s, was SHIT. Not only did Josie dress in clothing six sizes too small for her AGAIN, but the whole show was a 'hair metal' special, comprising such egregious poo as Whitesnake, Europe, Poison, Guns & Roses, Bon Jovi, &c. We ended up watching bits of the Grimm brothers adaptation, starring Miranda Richardson under twelve inches of make-up, and then the dumb Mark Trevorrow thing where he tries to be funny and interrupts all his guests. Then I taught myself how to play a stupid dumb patience game that sucked and went to bed. The end.

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 31 July 2004 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Chartbusting 80's with Whitesnake?! You turned it off to play patience?!!? Holy crap.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 31 July 2004 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Trayce, there was a lot of bowing, a lot of corsetry, and a lot of frilly velvet pantaloons. At one point I observed, 'Girl goths like to greet each other with hysterical squeals don't they', and R rolled her eyes and said, 'That's not because they're goths, it's because they're teenagers'.

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 2 August 2004 03:21 (twenty years ago)

i've 'ad glasses since I were 16 and I am sick of them. I mean they look good on me I guess, but I'm sick of them getting smeared with face oils and dandruff, I'm sick of losing them when I wake up in the morning cos I'm too blind as a bat to find the damn things. I'm sick of the fact it makes simple things like swimming a pain because you cant see wtf you're doing.

I want a pair that are just wider across the face than my current pair, and chunkier - more of an obvious FRAME to them. Bolder, if you will.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 03:23 (twenty years ago)

wow almy. i am imagining a crack team working furiously on an incredibly complicated pair of glasses.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 2 August 2004 03:24 (twenty years ago)

Poor Trayce.

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 2 August 2004 03:28 (twenty years ago)

So, like, until you find your glasses in the morning you're basically a bit useless? Do you have a predictable spot to leave them?

ANd have you ever cleaned them with aloe vera tissues by accident, and had to put up with them being all smudgy and crap all day?

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 2 August 2004 03:29 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Poor me. Pity me all of you and buy me some laser eye surgery >:)

xpost... yeah if theyre where I left em on the bedside I'm fine but I've been known to put them somewhere daft in a drunken haze and had to stagger about trying to find them.

Haha yes, didyou know those tissues now have warnings on them "Do not clean glasses with these" or something.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 August 2004 03:30 (twenty years ago)

its bad that thing where you can't find your glasses cos you need glasses.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 2 August 2004 03:31 (twenty years ago)

to be honest, i'm happy to pay that much as they are pretty unique, i get comments on them all the time. if i have to be a foureyed geek i'd rather have supercool unusual frames you see. i don't have health insurance either :( so the work subsidy is tops, i'm leaving this job at the end of the year so might have to get another pair before that i think.

How can you see the stripe? I can barely see the code number, let alone detail in the frame.

Right, I slimed up to some Heinemann representatives at a history teacher's conference at the beginning of the year and they put me in touch with a publishing mamanger - I sent him a funky resume and he gave me a job collating weblinks for a history textbook. Recently he got me to review a new series of textbooks with a bunch of other teachers and he was so impressed with my review that he offered me a couple of chapters spread across the geography textbooks - four chapters - about the equivalent of a whole book. I'll also be creating the crazy superinteractive cd rom that goes along with the books - pretty neat stuff.

If you know shit about shit and you have the qualifications, you should tottaly sleaze up to publishers. It's a nice little bit of cash on the side.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 02:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, um, shit, I'm doing chapters on Natural Disasters, Deserts, Polar Regions and Landforms.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 02:43 (twenty years ago)

so you are a geography teacher? is this something you really love? i would love to do that. although not about geography. so you just directly approached the publisher, no agents and whatnot?

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 02:45 (twenty years ago)

yeah, kinda. i teach a unit of basic geography to year 8's. history is my real bag though and this is kinda a gateway to writing history textbooks...and yeah, i just directly approached the representatives of the publisher at the conference. a couple of school liason officers/bookshiller dudes.

Kids' books? That's, like, a MASSIVE talent to be able to write kids' books. What age group?

Which Describes How You're Feeling All the Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Possibly toddlers... as we'd be illustrating them. Young adult fiction is bastardly hard to write, and the 10 year olds just want poo and slime stories. Little kids I think its a bit easier, as it focusses more on pictures. Having said that, my knowledge of that arena is extremely thin on the ground (Nick's an ace cartoonist though). We were gonna do a book for my neice called "My Aunty Trace" and poll the reaction, as it were ;) Never got round to it though, he's been too obsessed with coding his damn game engine. And me, I've been too depressed to write for some time now :-/

Jim: I think I saw a Bender doll at Alternate worlds, or Comics R Us - one of the Chapel st Comic Book Guy type shops anyway. This was a while ago, and Bender DID cost quite a bit of cashola. But he comes with a little Olde Fortan bottle and some Moms Robot Oil and everything, its so cool!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:13 (twenty years ago)

They ordered the wrong ones in, so they swapped them for the ones on the shelf. It's only until they get a new pair from the warehouse, so it's cool. At least I'm not having to wear brown frames for a week, really.

Sorry for being annoying/self-absorbed yesterday btw, had to vent somewhere :)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:53 (twenty years ago)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!^&%^%$#

I just walked into what was our bedroom, now half-converted into our study, to grab some clean clothes. I looked up at my long-owned, very rare, much loved Cocteau Twins Pearly Dewdops tour poster stuck as it always is above the bed (I'd not got round to moving it).

The cat has ripped two large chunks off each bottom corner of the poster. After years of me fending her off the ONE poster I own that she has not managed to tear/chew up, the ONE poster that meant anything. THE ONE FUCKING IRREPLACEABLE ONE.

I am so upset now. I might be able to tape it back together but it is ruined effectively. It was part of my mojo!

:-(

Were I not at work, I surely would. I *knew* I should have got the poster framed. Dammit dammit DAMMIT. Maybe i can tape it up and get it framed so it wont be so obvious. It'll be worthless collector wise now though.

yeah but it still works as a memento of your life :)

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:02 (twenty years ago)

True that. That poster's been like a "familiar", if you will, Ive had it since I was in high school. You can't buy them for love or money anymore. It was a 1984 UK tour advert for their Albert Hall show, plus plugging "Pearly Dewdrops" when it came out.

Chreiysy (trayce), Friday, 6 August 2004 00:19 (twenty years ago)

GAH my sw eng lecturer is making me angry. Students ask him a simple question and he turns on them like they're scum. I'm THIS close to tearing shreds off him.

Al'manach Oseni (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:57 (twenty years ago)

'ere this should cheer you up then:

I know you know what you know
but you should know by now that you're not me
Talk about a month of Sundays
Toffee nosed wet weekend as far as I can see
Hey diddle diddle
The cat and the fiddle
Piggy in the middle
Doo-a-poo-poo

Bible punching heavyweight
evangelistic boxing kangaroo
Orangutang and anaconda
Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse
even Pluto too

Hey diddle diddle
The cat and the fiddle
Piggy in the middle
Doo-a-poo-poo

(Stig is dead, honestly)

One man's civilization
is another man's jungle, yeah
They say revolution's in the air
I'm dancing in my underwear
'cause I don't care

Hey diddle diddle
The Cat's in the fiddle
Piggy in the middle
Doo-a-poo-poo
Doo-a-poo-poo

gaz (gaz), Friday, 6 August 2004 09:44 (twenty years ago)

He's OK? Cut lips and mouths can be deceptive - lots of blood, quick healing time.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 6 August 2004 22:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah he's ok. just some steri strips to hold it together, no stitches needed. unfortunately his nose is running all over the wound, which we've covered with some plastic skin.
