ILX Planned Outage

Hey everyone.

As of 12h00 02/06/2004 GMT, ILX will become unavailable for precisely two weeks.

This should give me enough time and space to get the new server up and running, as well as do some much needed overhauling of the ILX code. While it's not strictly necessary for the server to be down for this, it'll certainly make things easier not having to worry about administrative issues on top of everything else.

Also, some of you guys could use a break.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I mean in, like, less than 24 hours.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay. I can actually get some much needed work done. I'll miss it for two weeks though.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Are we going to get that update on the contribs?

They totalled something like USD$1700 in the end. I've bought the new server and bits to go with it, unfortunately everything that can go wrong seems to be going wrong. :( Still, I'm working hard to sort everything out. I'll post a detailed writeup of everything that's been going down when all's finished.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

2 weeks back over to greenspun? as temp measure

Please, don't trash the guy's server.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew, you should hack the title of this thread so it's in a bigger font. Just so it doesn't escape attention!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Vic Fluro, Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yr FAP will have to be organdised through good old-fashioned email, Madchen.

xpost I'm sure this will be good for me, but my fingernails will be gnawed through - my job can be reeeeeeaaaaly boring.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

This is like the government banning smoking and it being greated with delight by smokers grateful for having temptation moved out of harms way.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

While you're at it, perhaps you should delete all the posts made to ILX ever. It would kinda cool to start from tabula rasa.

(I'm only half-joking.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

If Andrew bans smoking I'll murder his ass

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

madchen, I posted as you, on the newest big bro thread.

I REALLY DIDN'T MEAN IT

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

But seriously, what if I begin to get withdrawal symptoms? Surely there must be some other board we can invade for two weeks. And I don't mean Nightscrawlers or that sci-fi board. Someone please help!

For any omnisicent being there's going to be an ILXor montage sequence lasting two weeks, during which time we do interesting and new things, fall in love, live, die, and everything in between, before we return the diegetic ILE in a fortnight.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for doing the stuff andrew, but 2 weeks??!!! I'm never gonna cope!

I AM LOOKING FORWARD, TO THIS, NOW

thanks, andrew.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that kills the football and tennis threads stone dead, doesn't it?

Just as well England out of the Euro football and Henman out of the Tennis. Do you think they knew?

England could've done the decent thing and lost last night instead of last Thursday and Henman...well, the Wimbledon thread ain't exactly saggy with Timbolove. I'm a bit cheesed off about the timing of this but then I do only really care about four threads a year.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

asshoppers need not be 2-ply

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It is strange, the effect that the loss of ilx has.

I don't suppose I understand why ilx is shutting down.

At least Tim Hopkins will not miss it.

the bellefox, Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

PF, it's in the first sodding post!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe it doesn't really need to be shut down. maybe the Americans really did stage Saddam's capture. maybe i didn't love you...quite as often as i should...

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the thing at the top of the thread. I am not sure that as a result I understand why ilx is shutting down.

I don't think I know what the ilx server and ilx code are. Also it says that it is not necessary for ilx to be down.

If ilx is down, it's down. It is none of my business, in a sense. I am just registering a degree of incomprehension.

Hey Andrew, is the whole of ILX going down? I mean, if I loaded up www.ilxor.com would it bring up anything at all? Cos if we can maybe we should have something saying "Hey y'all, this bitch'll be down for two weeks, go to NU-ILX "INSERT LINK""?

A planned outrage would be fun. Everyone could designate a specific time and we could all just go off on one another, primal scream style.

Can't we all just leave and be board-less and come back refreshed and with a new perspective, etc. etc.?

Why do we have to have a new board?

Just keep in touch with the people you email and talk to on aim and crap and we'll all come back to a different, better ilx, i think.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 1 July 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

HOW ABOUT.. we let those who want to keep reading ILX look at nu-ilx and those who don't want to, don't.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 1 July 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Our DNA is the interface mechanism
between the nonphysical soul and
physical body. For this interface to
hold both together, genetics must match
soul profile. A slight mismatch in one
will cause a mutation in the other, but
too much of a mismatch keeps the the
soul from seating in the body. So to
genetically modify or create an entire
race, it is not enough to merely
engineer the genetic code, but to
synchronize its profile and growth with
that of the souls intended to occupy the
bodies.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 2 July 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

so, what's that in New York time?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 2 July 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I'll be the one to call bullshit. In the spirit of a cooperative board, which many members (not myself I may add) contributed their own $ to the running of, it would have been nice if Andrew if had presented this to the board as a question or a debate, rather than a fait accomplis. Ditto the recent moderator fracas (ceremonial disebabling of all moderators, followed by a quiet reinstatement of the select few).

The people running this bitch are exhausted (fair enough), I get exhausted just reading some of the threads. But if Andrew is now owner of ILX, maybe when the board comes back the name should be changed to I Love Anrdrew? Seems this is punishment for misbehavior, but are we such children that when we act up, the board is pulled away from us without any prior notice?

Mind you, I really don't care all that much, but if Andrew wants to be a dictator, I think it should be accepted as is, and not with thanks.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 2 July 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm. . .I don't think anyone's taking it as such. The fact is it will be much easier on him to do this maitaince without worrying about keeping the site running at the same time.

i'm sure if there had been massive outcry he would have rethought it but so far most of us (including myself) see it as perfectly reasonabe.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 2 July 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed, Mary, I was under the impression that it was being taken down for maintenance. Not as some kind of punishment.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 2 July 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh...what?

He's doing work on the boards. To keep them working well.

Is this a dictatorship? Ok, maybe we all just leave it up to chance and see if the server crashes or whatever so nobody gets their panties in a wad about someone having responsibilities.

Sheesh.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 2 July 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

1. This is a break for maintainance reasons, not for "you guys ar childish reasons."

2. Has there ever been a point since moving into Andrew's hosting space that he hasn't been in complete and total control of every board on ilxor.com?

3. I, personally, would take your complaint much more seriously if you had a financial stake in this, Mary. I can't speak for anyone else.

4. Despite points 2 and 3, see point 1.

5. Graham didn't vet every operational decision he made with the posting community (see for example that tracklink functionality, the blog view and the RSS feeds). Why must Andrew?

6. You did get prior notice, wtf are you talking about?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 2 July 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this the 'ILX Planned Outrage' we were promised?

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 2 July 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - Not you Dan, obv.

The Ghost at Number Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 2 July 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

While it's true I could spend a lot more of my own time and get the work done on a 'development' site as well as maintaining the 'live' site, I don't have that luxury. The downtime is pretty-much necessary. There's no room discussion.

the recent moderator fracas (ceremonial disebabling of all moderators, followed by a quiet reinstatement of the select few).

To clarify: A few of the then-mods had threatened to go on a 'deletion spree', hence I removed all mod privileges.

Seems this is punishment for misbehavior, but are we such children that when we act up, the board is pulled away from us without any prior notice?

That is certainly an interesting way of looking at things. I'm not doing this to punish anyone - I certainly don't feel like anyone is 'in the wrong' or anything so ridiculous. My comment that "some of you guys could use a break," is superfluous to the main reasons for the downtime.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 2 July 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

What Dan said.

Also hasnt there been a sizeable outage in the boards history anyway? Not 2 weeks I dont think, but some many days, wasnt it? It coped then, and it will now. We all keep whining for new features - now lets allow Andrew (who is doing this for love and not money dont forget!) get on and make those improvements people talk about. We cant have everything at once!

(In other words, thanks for the work you're putting in Andrew, its much appreciated from this court)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 2 July 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Friday, 2 July 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I, for one, would take your points more seriously, if you weren't Moderator Grand Poobah, Dan. Are only people who have invested in ILX now to be allowed to voice their concerns with its running? As for prior notice, I felt that one day was a bit short. I've spoken up in the past when Graham made decisions I disagreed with, and back when I cared enough, same for when I felt moderators were abusing their privileges.

I did read Andrew's original post as baiting, given the shortness of the time frame, his admission that the 'outage' wasn't necessary, and especially his last comment that some us of could use a break. I just didn't think that's the sort of thing that Andrew should be able to decide on his own. But apparently I am in the minority.

Andrew, thanks for your further explanation and apologies if I have taken things the wrong way.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 2 July 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Love Andrew" is a magnificent idea!

I think so too!

I am actually not Grand Poobah Moderator anymore.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 2 July 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

And obviously people who didn't contribute money to the server are allowed to voice their opinions because you did and you continue to do so and no one is trying to stop you. HOWEVER, if you're going to make "We put money into this!!!" one of the cornerstones of your arguments, you will look more credible if, you know, you've actually put money in. (And FOR THE RECORD, I didn't contribute any money, either.)

Just my two cents but Andrew's penchant to arbitrate and dicate and ilxors' willingness to tolerate and even encourage that behavior continues to utterly astound me.

Just my two cents but Andrew's penchant to arbitrate and dicate and ilxors' willingness to tolerate and even encourage that behavior continues to utterly astound me.

I think I run things reasonably well around these parts, when I have the time to do so. I'm generally a "hands-off" dictator. When I act, I usually act with some degree of forethought. It's for these reasons that I think the rare occasions on which I make strong, decisive decisions are well-received.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 2 July 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post regarding the y'all, Eisbar. I saved some of the links mentioned above to my favorites list.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 2 July 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

you know as much as I want to wean myself away from here it has nothing to do with andrew or the moderators.

first of all, this is a goddamned messageboard. *somebody* has to take responsiblity for hosting it and running it. I am not one of those people (although I've said I wouldn't mind being one I defintely realize I'm getting off easy by not being one). By posting here regularly I feel like I'm submitting myself, ultimately, to the decisions of these people and I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT.

Fuck, i can't even answer emails on a reliable basis and andrew's giving up his time to keep us going, post greenspan? yeah I Love Andrew. Who wouldn't?

And I have *no* problem with Dan, Sean, Ned, Martin or anyone else who moderates doing so. Out of all the people I've known while here I trust them more than any mostly b/c I know they'll admit when they are wrong.

I've almost never requested any moderation but I did so recently. if my request had been denied I would not have complained or whined. I would've taken that as a decision on the basis of the community. AND THAT'S WHAT WE AGREE TO WHEN WE COME HERE.

If you don't like it, go buy your own goddamned server, program some extensive open-source system and host your own fucking messageboards.

shit.

A board like this, filled with pushy, clever people needs someone like Andrew. He's never misled us as to the nature of the forum - and he's done a very good job at running it, firmly where necessary.

It's absolutely his right to take the boards down. Can you even begin to imagine the discussion if we had to make a democratic decision? 10,000 new answers, the first 500 of which would be arguing the deep semantics, moral rights and personal leanings, followed by 9,500 more posts of sniping and nonsense. The fact that, in a smaller way, that IS what ILX has been like lately makes me glad for the break.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure everyone thinks so too. It's a given, surely?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I absolutely agree. I think Andrew is doing the right things, for the right reasons, and a break will do us all good.

But still, I've got an hour and a half left to stomp around in my big boots until them.

My New Identity (kate), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

mary otm, in many ways.

I think the less-than-24-hours notice and the "not strictly necessary" and the final line, of his first post, are a little bit insulting and I know how much andrew dislikes insults.

I'm sure he thinks of himself as "hands-off" and thoughtful and "well received" but why wouldn't he?

that said, it seems, almost, fortuitous, that there will be one fewer thing, to distract, for the next two weeks.

I know, of course, that andrew dedicates personal time, to ILX and its server etc., but it shows. all the same, good luck, with the server switch stuff, andrew.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew is well-received*, Richard. What point are you trying to make?

*with the inevitbale small number of people who disagree, obv

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

thankfully, I don't need to make a point, mark.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

And yet you're making it anyway, or rather you're making snide insinuations. It's not very nice.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't care for andrew. it is allowed.

I don't think I was too snide.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

He looks like Lou Barlow, that's all I know.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

he looks as much like lou barlow as RJG is snide

ken c (ken c), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you are.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

No.

why so negative Mark

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Thankfully, Mark doesn't need to be funny.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Very clever, Ronan.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, for what it's worth, Andrew's someone for whom I have developped more respect for in the past few days, for actually taking the time to take stuff offboard, instead of going into overdrive on Moderator Fatigue. This is not a snipe, either, just an observation that some Moderators are very definitely suffering from Moderator Fatigue.

My New Identity (kate), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I never bothered pursuing an argument, with andrew, on ILX, for one pointless/slightly baffling moderation, but I did send him an e-mail about it, a few months later, just out of curiosity. he replied, once, in an apologetic, yet insulting (I don't think he realised), manner, never giving an actual reason. I also think he thought he didn't have to. oh well!!

RJG (RJG), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

he replied, once, in an apologetic, yet insulting (I don't think he realised), manner, never giving an actual reason.

You sent one email, I sent one back. I really think you're being unfair with me. I honestly didn't mean to insult you. The whole "sorry, but seriously..." thing was completely unintentional. "But seriously" is one of my verbal tics, I'm afraid.

I dont get why people are panicking and going on with this tabula rasa shit. The server's going offline for a bit for maintenance. Then it comes back, same as before, but with tidied up code, on a new machine many of you paid good shekels for.

And yet now some of those same people are whining and freaking out or saying its good and goodbye. WTF?

A pause for thought, is all it is. Chill dudes!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

it was like the time I got a haircut and the guy cut a few hairs, at the front of my hairline, shorter, than the rest. it only made me angry because I couldn't work out why he had done it, deliberately.

andrew, there was no reason for you to delete that thread. it was of no less value than any other thread (in my opinion), really, but, even if it was, you shouldn't just delete, on a whim. I realise it was a whim.

I often have human feeling but not right now.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 2 July 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"hike up your dress a little more/ and show your world to me:" is a funny line. dont you guys like humor in your music? do you have to really take music so seriously? its only music. I like music as much as the next guy but why do you hate a band so much. At least they play their instruments and write their own songs. Unlike those Pop idol 'artists'.
