He already gets more touches than any other nominal forward in the league. I don't think dropping deeper still would be a good idea.
His side needed a different kind of midfielder yesterday but Rooney wasn't it.

were he to be dropped deeper officially he would be a midfielder and utd could play one of the actual forwards they employ

Rooney's statement settles his short-term future but does nothing to address long-term issues over his future.
long-term? he's more likely to die than he is to play more than 30 more premier league games.

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says Rooney would be an "ideal" signing for United's Premier League rivals Arsenal.
"Arsenal lack somebody like Rooney - a winner, a leader," he told BBC Radio 5 live.
"He could easily go into somewhere like Arsenal and get a few of their players by the scruff of the neck on the pitch and improve their performances."

He's a million miles away from Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand or any of those in terms of myth vs reality vs salary vs harnessing an entire footballing infrastructure around.
A million miles. Each of the above was a player that significantly improved the teams they played for consistently throughout their long careers. Everything United or England have done since Rooney became their completely white hope has been despite the heaving infection.

rooney gets even worse and the same cult of morons around him continues to boost. before the match tonight bbc live text, essentially rooney's political base, said "if only everton had two rooneys" - i think it was shearer. it all sort of makes sense as the language around the fa cup becomes more and more brexit, though would prefer if liverpool everton didn't get dragged into some pride of britain affair.
seems england or english football just won't give up on this useless moron - i swear the last two everton games i've watched on motd he's given the ball away for a goal, and yet there's some desperate narrative that needs to act like the world would be a better place if only we had 7.6 billion wayne rooneys, all chuntering into each other.
anyway - the atmos seemed good - and welcome vvd. kinda hoping his performance and goal and general ego combined with his productive hectoring of karius might suggest one player in this team has a backbone as well as talent.
― Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Saturday, 6 January 2018 01:14 (eight years ago)
Good post. And of course it was Shearer stanning for Rooney; he's his mirror image in today's football, TWP could be Shearer's son. Both are essentially Brexit players: entirely opportunist, morally bankrupt, infantile and hyper-capitalist. Always first in line to swap embodying one unpopular opinion for the next. I'm sure they'll have a right laugh at the next debauched wedding of some footballing millionaire dummy they'll both attend. (Hope they'll grab a cab afterwards instead of driving themselves. For other people's sake.)
have to admit that VvD at Liverpool is genuinely exciting. I placed a bet on VvD scoring tonight. Nothing to pride myself about, but he's the unique kind of player you kind of expect to score on his debut for Liverpool. 84m for VvD isn't a lot if he's a good fit and the fans grow to love him. He's already proved worth the money more than Bale has managed in years and years at Madrid. If it's a perfect fit, it's a perfect fit. That's invaluable nowadays.

I'm trying to get into baseball. As in seriously trying, reading the threads, the books, the websites. I watched most of last season and most of the play-offs, and pretty much thoroughly enjoyed it. But I just don't feel I can *connect* to it like people who grew up with it. I feel like I'm way behind you guys all the time, which is frustrating.
The whole transfer and trading stuff ~is a mystery to me~ for one. In football, club A just buys Wayne Rooney from club B for an insane amount of money, and he'll still be shite. It's comforting to know how things play out. I'm trying w/ baseball, believe, but it's not easy.
― ♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 6 January 2018 03:01 (eight years ago)
When you saw you "watched most of last season", were you watching one team in particular or just random games? Because I think most people connect to baseball by being a fan of a team first more than the game in general, especially during the regular season.

He definitely said that. The bit that Holgate reacted to was afterwards - when an Everton player’s head was blocking the view of the camera. If Firmino did say anything else he was pretty close to the ref when he did so.

― Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Saturday, 6 January 2018 10:14 (eight years ago)
He does say filha de puta but holgate doesn’t react to that, he reacts few seconds after when firmino mouths the word “negro”, you can’t see it clearly because of stupid jonjo Kenny’s head pic.twitter.com/5UQUB2BvSK— ! (@ThibautSave) January 5, 2018
Obvs no way to know what he said when Kenny’s noggin was blocking the view but that seems to be what he reacted to, unless he took a bit of time to translate the previous insult.

Why, among US sports, is American Football the one that's always pushed on the frankly uninterested UK populace? Basketball would have a lot more potential, being the least prolix of the big three. Something to do with broadcast rights?

At the weekend, one of Depay's former United team-mates, Wayne Rooney, revealed a failed attempt to help the Dutchman ingratiate himself at the club."He came on at Stoke away and messed up for their goal so (manager) Louis van Gaal made him play for the reserves the next day," said Rooney, who now plays for Major League Soccer franchise DC United."I said, 'Look, it's a bit difficult [for you]. Just don't come in with all your fancy stuff.'"And he turned up for the reserve game in his Rolls-Royce, wearing a leather jacket and a cowboy hat. And I just thought, 'What's the point?'

I'm not a football fan, but when I think of Wayne Rooney I always remember the plan to make a five-volume autobiography of Wayne Rooney, because ghostwritten football autobiographies were so hot back in 2006:https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2006/mar/10/books.bookscomment
"Everyone knows Wayne Rooney has a way with words. Usually very short ones, consisting mainly of asterisks, like this recent verbal sally aimed at a Premiership referee and faithfully recorded by the tabloids: "You f***ing t*** ... you're a f***ing disgrace."
Computer screens were really narrow in 2006. Rooney was apparently given a £5m advance. This was back when the biggest-selling author in the UK was Katie Price. The joke at the time was that he was only 20, but that didn't seem particularly bad, and I imagine that nowadays there's easily enough material for half a million words about Wayne Rooney. His story is the story of Britain in the early twenty-first century, and also the 1960s, because I always felt there was something 1960s about him ("local boy done good", that kind of thing).
"Rooney's deal comes a day after Alan Greenspan, former chairman of the US Federal Reserve, signed a $9m (£5.2m) deal with Penguin for his memoirs. That deal eclipsed Pope John Paul II's $8.5m for Crossing the Threshold of Hope in 1994, but remained behind the $12m Bill Clinton is rumoured to have received for his memoirs."
I don't know if the moderators can see it, but notice how I put the italic tags inside the quote marks. Because the quote marks aren't part of the quote, they define the quote. The words are italic, not the quote marks. I may not have progressed to CSS and Javascript etc but I do know how to write clean HTML. If anybody needs someone who can add italic tags to blocks of text, email me and we can come to a deal.
It seems that one volume came out later the same year, My Story So Far, but four years on the whole thing was scrapped because England did poorly in a bunch of international tournaments. It was ghostwritten by Hunter Davies OBE, who also went on to ghostwrite John Prescott's autobiography, Prezza, My Story: Pulling no Punches. "And then I hit him" probably features in both books.

he did ok at Derby, maybe he's only any good at crisis clubs who aren't paying player wages and teetering on the edge of bankruptcy etc. His record has been just as bad as Darren Moore's and he wont get sacked. Then again we weren't in a playoff place when the useless fucker got the job.
Cook said: “Wayne’s role here is to be a leader, to drive a successful, ambitious and winning mentality.” This is another milestone for Birmingham City. With it comes great expectation.”

looking into his time at Derby, a lot of their fans consider that Rosenior was the brains behind the operation and the way their respective careers are going bears this out, well the latter is doing ok at Hull while Wazza likely won't get another job at this level.
