I'm moving to Philadelphia in September to attend Drexel. Any tips on good neighborhoods, where to live, how to find an apartment? Close to campus would be good. How is Drexel anyway?

I think there's some info about Philly on the thread about me and Sarah moving (search for Nick Sarah move new city or something like that). The only advice I can give is go get brunch at Astral Plane. It was really really good.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been a long time since I lived around Philly, but I seem to recall the neighborhoods right around Penn/Drexel to be kind of sketchy. Fortunately, the city is small enough that no spot is really too far out of the way. My sis goes to Penn and she lives in Northern Liberties, whose gentrification is accelerating. Might be a nice place to look, though.

Other option: seek out the Real World house and move next door. You can be the guy who gets busted for stealing cable!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I happened upon that Real World house when I was there a couple weekends ago. Yeesh.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Look in West Philly. There are still some good rents there. And you wouldn't be far from Drexel. Drexel is cool. Cool radio station and T.V. station too. You should know that college students looking for good spots to live start looking now. Or even before now for September. Not that you won't find something, but it has gotten harder to find a decent spot.

West Philly has really come a long way too. Great African food! And the anarchists will play punk rock for you.

if you're going to attend drexel, definately check west philly. [i live here, fyi] rent is cheap for students and penntrification has made the area nice.

Pick up a copy of the Philadelphia Weekly, for the best Philadelphia apartment listings I know in print.

It's pretty much too late now. This is the first time I've seen this thread. I hope you, original poster, found one of the other threads and found an apartment and so forth.

yeah, the PW has great listings. the best kept secret though, are the upenn newsgroups. thats how i found my new place.

Boycott Yuengling Beer Products
From Daniel Grace, Secretary-Treasurer, Teamsters Local 830

http://phillyunions.com/teamsters830/

The Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters has announced that it supports
Teamsters Local 830 in its efforts to protect its members' jobs and
officially endorses Local 830's boycott of Yuengling products.

SITUATION:

On March 9, 2006, D.G. Yuengling & Son withdrew union recognition,
declaring it would no longer continue negotiating with Teamsters Local 830
Mgmt. Yet, the contract between Teamsters Local No. 830 and D.G. Yuengling
& Son did not expire until March 31, 2006. By these actions D.G. Yuengling
& Son is jeopardizing the working standards, conditions and livelihoods of
many hard-working Local 830 workers whose efforts and dedication have
helped this local company achieve the national acclaim and success they
now enjoy.

Several attempts by Local 830 management to resume good faith negotiations
in hopes of coming to a fair and amicable agreement have been spurned by
the beverage manufacturer.

Local 830 has filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board, which
are pending.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

1) In support of those local 830 workers whose livelihoods are now in
jeopardy because of this very serious situation, the Pennsylvania
Conference of Teamsters is urging Philadelphia area union members, their
families and supporters, as well as local tavern owners and liquor
licensed establishments and all those who patronize these establishments,
NOT TO PURCHASE the following Yuengling brands until further notice:
Yuengling Premium Beer, Yuengling Light, Lord Chesterfield Ale, Dark
Brewed Porter, Traditional Lager, Light Lager, and Original Black & Tan.

2) Local 830 urges you to contact D.G. Yuengling & Son at the address
and/or phone number below and express your support for the workers of
Teamsters Local 830. Let them know you will not purchase or consume their
products until they resume good faith negotiations with the Local,
recognize the union, and demonstrate their willingness to maintain fair
working conditions, wages and standards.

Yuengling Brewery
5th & Mahantongo Streets
Pottsville, PA 17901
(570) 622-4141

Additional information is available on the company web site at
http://www.yuengling.com/contact.htm.

3) FORWARD THIS MESSAGE to your fellow union members, family, friends,
local taverns and liquor establishments, etc. and ask them to boycott
Yuengling products and support Local 830 as well.

We thank you very much for your support!

NYCNative, Thursday, 10 May 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

a friend of mine is selling a house in italian market, about a block from pat's. move there.

No, but I do want to say: Go Michael Nutter!

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 10 May 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

what sort of situation are you looking for? where is your job?

btw, i grew up here and have been living here for the past 5 months after leaving school for bit. all i can say is that this city is fucked up (drugs & homicides), has an outrageously bad music scene for a city of its size, yet has this weird charm to it. everything is so spread out that it's totally fun to actually explore.

a few classics off the top of my head:
- a night of bourgeois beer-drinkin at Monk's. remember to bring at least $60.
- the wissahickon park in the northwestern area of the city (germantown, mt. airy, chestnut hill, etc)
- all the cool abandoned boats on the river. so sweet to look at.
- the gayborhood late at night. more outrageous tranny hookers per block than any other place i've been.

there's more. i'll be back.

at the end of the day, tho, i'm glad i grew up here, and am glad i am getting the fuck out of this shithole.

the table is the table, Thursday, 10 May 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

more classics:
- Critter & Guittari on Indian Queen Lane in East Falls
- the giant vietnamese shopping center on washington ave.
- the spicy pumpkin soup at My Thai. has shredded, red-hot chicken on top, with lots of lemongrass. sooo fucking good.

the table is the table, Thursday, 10 May 2007 03:24 (eighteen years ago)

for records it depends on what you're into. AKA (lots of everything, but especially great psych/prog/avant shit), 611 (dance) and Philadelphia Record Exchange (used) are the best in their areas for the city.

there are shitloads of good independent bookstores. one that is catty-corner to eastern state penitentiary (also awesome) has everything you'd want of used books for pretty cheap. joseph fox on sansom is good for new and more literary stuff, as is robin's. big jar has a lot of stuff, but quality is sort of spotty.

This I need to investigate. I haven't been down to My Thai in years.

the end of the day, tho, i'm glad i grew up here, and am glad i am getting the fuck out of this shithole.

I didn't exactly grow up in Philadelphia (well, I partly did), but I too feel really glad to think I'll probably be getting out of here soon, even though I'm more than happy to talk about the city's good points.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 10 May 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

The mayor' race (primary, but that pretty much is the mayor's race in this case) is pretty interesting this time around: five Democratic candidates. Race is still obviously a factor, but it's playing out in a much more complicated way, with lots of white voters supporting Nutter, and lots of black voters supporting Knox (while Fattah recently took a swipe at Nutter, seeming to imply he was not black enough, etc.).

i had it at dinner.

the table is the table, Thursday, 10 May 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

This is the worst time of year to find an apartment -- students moving, etc. You might want to look into subletting for the summer. That way you'll have a place on the short term and get a sense of the city before dropping the cash on a lease.

I found my place (in West Philly) through the Usenet newsgroups associated with Penn and my previous dwellings through friends.

theoreticalgirl, Friday, 11 May 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

if you want to live in port fishington (yay murders and the best heroin in philly on your corner...erm), my friend's boyfriend owns a house there with an extra room. it's a big house, with lots of space, but he is kind of wacky. examples: he heats the three floors using a complicated system of woodburning stoves. he smokes 20+ handrolleds a day. he bathes rarely. he goes to home depot right before it closes all the time because he's a neurotic hoarder and a welder. by the same token, he drinks good wine, makes good food, and smokes great ganj. also makes some beautiful sculptural pieces, and knows a pretty good amount about art.

uh, yeah. if you want a temporary place (very cheap), i might be able to hook you up.

Penn sends alert alleging crimes by kids as young as 9
By GLORIA CAMPISI
camp✧✧✧@phillyn✧✧✧.c✧✧ 215-854-5935

Groups of youths as young as 9 have been harassing, assaulting and robbing students, staff and residents on the University of Pennsylvania campus, a school official said yesterday.
Karima Zedan, director of academic & external affairs for Penn's division of public safety, said an alert had been issued about six incidents involving separate groups of youths beginning July 3.

Philadelphia police last night said that groups of youths had committed 10 assaults and some robberies on the Penn campus between June 9 and July 7.

The incidents listed in Penn's alert took place between 4:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., in these areas: 33rd and Chestnut streets, Locust Street near 40th and near 42nd, and Locust Walk near 37th Street.

A similar incident also occurred at 35th and Spring Garden streets, in the vicinity of Drexel University, the alert said.

The youths involved were all male, up to 13 years old, and walked the campus area in groups of three to eight, according to the alert, which was issued late last week.

Two youths have been arrested in connection with one of the incidents, on Locust Street near 42nd.

Patrols have been stepped up in the area, including covert operations, and security cameras were being monitored. City police and safety personnel from the University City District also are involved in the investigation.

The university began installing more closed-circuit cameras and emergency phones early last year, after a student was hit in the thigh by a stray bullet during an aborted robbery and a man was killed in a diner just off campus on Christmas Day 2005.

A Drexel graduate student was severely beaten by four University City High School students in January 2006 at 36th and Spring Garden streets.

i mean seriously, for all the good they've done in the area, fuck Penn. West Philly will never be a playground for spoiled racist Jewish kids, so stop fucking trying.

the table is the table, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 04:24 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, let's just accept that groups of kids are regularly beating people up and mugging them in the area. Like it's really in Penn's interest to advertise this if it weren't serious. I've been reading story after story about these things happening lately.

I mean, I could just as easily translate your comment as: "Stay in your Center City ghetto whitey, or else you deserve to be beaten by groups of black kids with weapons!" (Not assuming you're not white, incidentally.)

I'm moving here on Friday. This thread needs updating anyway. Can someone recommend the best:

restaurants
bars
venues
record stores
museums
general things to do (sights, parks, whatever you can think of)

I've literally spent like 24 hours total in the city so I'm pretty much in the dark here.

restaurants

my fav is the pho place on 6th and washington, its the first one you see when you drive into the parking lot (on the right hand side if youre driving down 6)

don't really go to restaurants that much tbh

bars

no clue

venues

used to go to shows a lot at the first unitarian church, heard johnny brendas is good too

record stores

repo records on south street, some others on south street

museums

dunno, maybe try to go see the barnes collection before the city steals it all?

general things to do (sights, parks, whatever you can think of)

dunno

Restaurants (vegan): loving hut on south is cheap and good, new harmony on 9th is default for Chinese, HomeSlice is grebt vegan pizza, and Horizons is expensive but also te best meal you will ever have

Bars: I adore Tattooed Mom on 5th and south; it is kitschy, cozy, inexpensive, fun, all around tops. The Barbary in fishtown is also p cool. Predictable bit still fun indie dance night on Mondays seems to be the thing to do these days. El Bar in fishtown also rules

Record stores: Repo Records on 5th and south is my favorite ever. Aka music on 2nd above market is bigger and has a larger selection, but the staff at repo is way more friendly and informed and fun to talk to; it feels like *your* local record store

Venues: the tla, the trocadero, electric factory, starlight ballroom, first unitarian church basement, Johnny brenda's, Kung Fu necktie (the last 2 are also cool bars; brenda's has a killer beer selection)

R5productions.com is your friend

How is the cost of living in Philly? I'm seriously thinking about picking up sticks and moving across the river from NJ if I can convince my boss to let me do my customer service bullshit from a home-office setup. Probably won't be able to, of course, but I am sick to death of being within spitting distance of city life for the first time in years and only getting to visit as a tourist on weekends.

Museums/etc: Phila museum of art is great, mütter museum is creepy and morbid medical oddities, Franklin institute is this kickass science museum where you are a kid again

The magic gardens on south and 10th is tiny but an absolute must-see, and also the first friday of every month is First Friday where all the galleries have openings, and you bike around and see them, and it is fun

The last drop on 13th and pine is nice for coffee too. 2 more rad bars: POPE in south Philly and north star in fairmont. Also if you dig punk/hardcore there's a really great warehouse space in north Philly called The Ox; I saw Lightning Bolt and Pissed Jeans there in June or July

Where generally did you move to?

(Simple) (Elegant) (Stevie D), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

The thing about Philly: it is dirt fucking cheap. Last night I met a guy with a nice studio at 13th and pine and it was just over 700. If you do north/south/west Philly you will be paying between 2 and 500

More etc:
Wooden Shoe, an anarchist bookstore on south st
Monday is $3 movie night at the trocadero and you get a free beer
Essene on 4th and bainbridge is a totally kickass local food co op
Philly aids thrift on 5th and bainbridge is the best thrift store I have ever seen. If you need any misc household items or kitchen shit, go here. Dirt cheap too
The book trader on 2nd above market near AKA is a very very nice used bookstore with a very very knowledgable staff

Theres also Making Time which is where all the cool kids go to dance their asses off the last fri of the month. It's at Voyeur I think. The great thing abt Philly (vs NYC) is that in addition to everything bein so affordable (drinks, covers/ticket prices, food, etc), no ones afraid to dance at shows. I love this so much.

saw great shows at the first unitarian church basement and at the Troc; seconding Mutter, and uhhh, that's all i'm remembering right now.

anyway, had no idea you could snag rents so cheaply...

We've had a running thing for about 8 years that's almost become a joke at this point where every time we visit certain friends in Philly we say for like the next week that we're going to move to Philly and then it wears off. I really like the city and it's cheap as hell. My friends are mostly in West Philly right now and it's a great area -- the big park (whose name I am blanking out on) has a good farmer's market on the weekends and giant all-ages larper battles which are kind of amazing to watch. There's a decent but small food coop. There's a decent vietnamese place that I think is called Vietnam. A few good ethiopian places. Once, Gojo, also has an upstairs bar that frequently gets used as a jazz venue (more by the west philly post-college crowd than the local ethiopian community). In general there always seem to be a million house and warehouse shows, art events, etc. and people seem friendly so if you just talk to enough people you will find out what's going on.

the South Phila. Tap Room has amazing beers and food. a little pricey, but worth.

the Abyssynia(n) at 45th & Locust has amazing cheap ethiopian food, as well as a bar upstairs that is nice if it isn't crowded by terrible UPenn students.

i also highly rec the Ox and the First Unitarian Church. for dancing, making time isn't bad.

Wooden Shoe, however, is a mere shell of what it used to be, and it made me terribly sad to see it turn into such a shitbin.

people seem to like banana clips. i don't know if that's still ongoing. robotique was good but the last one was this past wknd. people seem to get excited about broadzilla, night train, ten commandments (reggae, soul), england belongs to twee (indiepop, oi! wtf?), sex dwarf

they have dj's, dancing upstairs some nights at the dive and at teri's in the italian market. maybe some of that totally fun and awesome and great, i have no idea

phrequency, fiftyonefiftyone, philebrity btwn the three of them seem to do a good job of listing stuff

is fiftyonefiftyone a Philly thing??? I remember they took pix at this one basement show in New Brunswick 4 years ago. I always saw flyers for Robotique but never went--it's over now?? And yeah the Broadzilla DJs are everywhere.

When you gone/when you get back? I'm AWOL for a while because I have $0 to spend but like infinite more space on my phone to take dancing pictures. And yeah the DJ scene is like... Dave P, Dave Pak, Adam Sparkles, Broadzilla DJs, Rock Tits, ALL OF THEM ALL THE TIME.

Good luck with the moves, guys.

Yeah, Telephone, to chime in with Stevie, there are not really any for-real grocery stores in Fishtown proper at this point, so that is a little weird. But depending on your transportation situation and different inclinations, maybe that is not a big deal. Many folks loooove living there. There is a store just over the border in Port Richmond, plus a huge Pathmark in NoLibs that may or may not open any day now. Plus there are a couple of little markets scattered about. Anyway, yeah good luck. I guess follow your instincts, go with a part of town that seems a good fit to you or that you feel comfortable in

Of course if I eventually move to a phily firm I can probably live the good life on my eventual salary, buy a nice victorian with a garden in the university area, send my kids to public school with all the profs' kids, get season tickets to the orchestra, etc.

It's best for me to start before 7:30 bc of baby bedtime, but I'm pretty free every night except Friday. No bars I'm particularly fond of, though there are some nice places in Manayunk + in Ardmore if we're looking for location suggestions. Up for most anything, tho.

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

How far are you from the Schuylkill? Maybe we could do something in west phl or ritt/logan square area?

Joan Cusack clumsily running into a water fountain (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I can travel a little. Just the further I have to go, the earlier I have to leave to be home by bedtime. Which isn't necessarily a problem. 6:00-7:30 could be nice PHAP.

Mordy, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:20 (thirteen years ago)

ya I was thinking like 7

Joan Cusack clumsily running into a water fountain (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

Stupid question: where can one get a decent haircut in Philly? I'm, um, a number of months overdue for one and kind of unsure what to do after years of terrible Supercuts in New Jersey.

muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Saturday, 7 April 2012 02:03 (thirteen years ago)

I used to get cheap ones from students at Jean Madeline at like 4th and Bainbridge but now I go to my friend who works at Sulimay's Barber Shop on E Girard; excellent cuts for only $10

I went to the Mutter Museum, this brasserie off Rittenhouse Square called Parc, and Franklin bar, where there was a large contingent of people in sailor garb with the added innovation of suspenders. It's so fun here!

Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 June 2012 04:04 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, those were Mennonites boozing it up

How was Parc? That place is always packed

dell (del), Monday, 11 June 2012 04:18 (thirteen years ago)

It was good! I wouldn't have necessarily picked it, but my sister made the reservations. Tonight she wants us to go to a Peruvian-Cantonese restaurant?

We just negotiated my mom out of a bus tour of Philly in favor of a trolley to the liberty bell. If I remember correctly, there are cute stores in the historic area (are those just along Chestnut . . . or)?

Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 June 2012 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

Nice work, heh. Yeah, if you walk along 2nd and 3rd just north of Market there are shops, galleries, etc. It's a nice area to walk around in... plus there is a coffeeshop that legendary radio personality Jerry Blavat ("The Geator") frequents. Alas, Danny Bonaduce left the neighborhood last year, but you can probably still drink in his spirit. Eww.

Chifa, hmmm, haven't encountered any feedback on that place. Sounds interesting tho. Cool, I've always been curious about that brasserie jawn

dell (del), Monday, 11 June 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

Funny, you don't strike me as a brasserie kind of guy.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 June 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

I don't strike me as being that kind of guy either, which may partly explain why I've never been there. I imagine that it's exactly like a cross between Arby's and Dunkin Donuts, except with outdoor seating, topless servers and maybe better coffee

Please rate these Philadelphia establishments, recommended to me by a random local I met at Tank Bar.

Bob & Barbara's, El Fuego, Oscar's, Little Pete's, 4th Street Deli, Tony Luke's. I was not so inebriated that I neglected to take notes.

Virginia Plain, Friday, 15 June 2012 23:23 (thirteen years ago)

tony luke's has been my go-to for sandwiches & cheesesteaks for a long time

worried that they 'sold out' because they have a stand at citizens bank

un® (dayo), Friday, 15 June 2012 23:24 (thirteen years ago)

dayo y don't we hang out?

Mordy, Friday, 15 June 2012 23:27 (thirteen years ago)

Funny, you don't strike me as a "cheesesteak" kind of guy.

Virginia Plain, Friday, 15 June 2012 23:35 (thirteen years ago)

tony luke's above all those imo. roast pork and broccoli rabe, yo. little pete's is okay if you're drunk and it's late, or if you're stranded overnight waiting for the first regional line out of the city. there are definitely better diners, but i am lucky to be not far from a couple of them. oscar's is a hole-in-the-wall that has good cheap beer specials (i used to hit it up every friday for a couple before going home when i worked a few blocks away) and did a surprisingly edible cheesesteak (at least they did a decade ago), but nothing worth searching out unless you already happen to be there drinking. bob and barbara's is an institution, with all the positives and negatives that implies. ditto fourth street deli. el fuego i've passed by a bunch of times but never been. might be pretty good, food-wise, but seems hipsterish, clientele-wise. my favorite cheap burritos in the city are still santa fe's, but a large part of that is college nostalgia.

also, many days later: i am back in the city proper, living in south philly, but i am still forced to commute to the burbs for my job, until i find something here.

i will wash blood and guts out of the gutters of the italian market by hand if it means i never have to commute to the burbs ever again.

Here's a tip: If you want to go to the Hop Sing Laundomat ("speakeasy") make sure you go on Thurs.-Sat., when it's open.

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 16 June 2012 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

My favorite time in Philly was like 2000-2005--Big Jar bookstore, Molly's Books in the Italian Market, the Philadelphia Independent (indie newspaper run by Matthias Schwartz, who writes for the New Yorker now), the leaky-ass Sam Eric theatre, all those anarchist shows at the Rotunda in west Philly, the McSweenys festivals at the Free Library, Charles Bernstein, Ron Silliman & Bob Perelman showing up at every poetry reading, the Fringe Festivals.

President Keyes, Saturday, 16 June 2012 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

poor sam eric :( i definitely got leaked on there. when i moved to philly i swear there were ten regular movie theatres in center city. i went to all of them.

Tank Bar A, see above, friendly, generous bartender, nice locals
McGlinchey's A, horseshoe bar, smokers, cheap beer
Trestle Inn A+atmospheric

now all my posts got ship in it (dayo), Thursday, 5 July 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

Everything is expensive but that being said the Dogfish Head brewpub and the Purple Parrot are both ace; the latter has a crab quesadilla that will make your mouth jizz. Both are on Rehoboth ave which is mostly tacky gift shops, though the Spencer's-y Gidget's Gadgets has a couple cute things. Grotto Pizza is the best and also there's a no-frills decent coffee shop called The Gallery Espresso with decent iced coffee and outlets to plug in a laptop or phone charger. Skip Cafe a Go Go a few doors down bcz they have no outlets for patrons, wtf is that shit? Oh and be sure to hit that ice cream place on the ave right by the boardwalk that has like 70 flavors. Also, Fractured Prune has absurdly decadent donuts (like Oreo-mocha and stuff; you can pick one of like 10 glazes and like 15 toppings and they fry/glaze them to order). El Dorado makes good fish and shrimp tacos if you don't mind paying $3.75 ea but they lose points for not having horchata

Yah, are you going to that? I don't think I like them that much? though so many of my friends do? I haven't been there yet. Maybe I should go.. Will it be raining?

dell (del), Saturday, 14 July 2012 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe, I'm not sure. I'm going to try and get just drunk enough for going out in public first; I'll probably be there if I can manage that. It's just stopped raining in Fairmount, so hopefully it will stay dry later tonight.

muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Saturday, 14 July 2012 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

alright, well, click on my name and "webmail" me if you need a chaperone or something. what i've learned over the years about going out in public is: at best people are happy to see you and very expressive about it, at middling they are too wrapped up in their own shit to think about you very much, and at worst they are drunk in an unpleasant, looking to start fights way. i can only imagine that ppl at a pains of being pure at heart show will be somewhere in-between the first two categories. kinda like a middle school dance but with less social skills in evidence.

dell (del), Saturday, 14 July 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

Fuck it, I'm doing this.

Say hi if you want. Longish hair, pink shirt, glasses, awkwardness.

ok, i am supposedly meeting ppl in old city and then walking there or something. i will look for you. i look like God, or at the least his spoiled child, i don't know how else to put it

dell (del), Saturday, 14 July 2012 22:31 (thirteen years ago)

oops it started like a half-hour ago. never mind, sorry!!

dell (del), Saturday, 14 July 2012 22:36 (thirteen years ago)

For real though guys we should really do a FAP at Morgan's Pier for one of their themed food specials. Though I suppose it's kind of a hike for Mordmeister

alan is more upset (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 14 July 2012 22:51 (thirteen years ago)

The band hasn't shown up yet actually...

I know they have DJs late on Saturday nights as well- I saw a flier advertising Alan Braxe and Tim Sweeney this month

muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Saturday, 14 July 2012 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

Saturday is a shitshow; I tried to go for Braxe and I left after like 15 min (a good 40 before he went on). Tim Sweeney DJs at Snacks too and that's much nicer for dancing IMO

Fuck all these disgusting people who are the alleged children of mafisoso codes, fuck you forever. Get a taste of your own medicine. Where else would be the perfect kingdom of present-day capitialism fucking itself forever? What happens to you and america at large when you get yourself out of your guy fieri/mitt romney ass whenever you have finally exhausted the physical bodies of the peeps you are bleeding. had such a crush on cecily tynan. i even had a crush on monica malpass. i have a thing for news anchors. its like one of my only things! i know, too much information. in an alternate universe i totally live alone and devote all my time to my obsessive anchorwoman fansite.

scott seward, Sunday, 19 August 2012 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

i used to wait on monica when i worked at saladalley at the bourse and i always got a little nervous putting her french onion soup down on the table. was afraid my love for her would make me shakey and drop it in her lap. plus, i was always hungover so i was always a little naturally shakey.

I feel this. I'm glad to be able to live comfortably in a nice neighborhood surrounded by friends but... the bar seems to be set sooooooo low here. I feel like all of the creative and ambitious people have left. I feel bored in a way I didn't know existed until I moved here. But I can't undervalue not having to worry about money and being able to live almost anywhere in the city that I want.

elan, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 00:10 (thirteen years ago)

One of my jobs has a really stellar set of coworkers, though. Some of them are from Philly and the suburbs and I like them. But I get what you're saying. This place seems like it's still in the 1970s.

elan, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 00:12 (thirteen years ago)

I guess I always thought a time machine would be cool

elan, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 00:13 (thirteen years ago)

what's weird to me is that almost every time i'm in philly, i only hang out with people who also grew up in philly, or are friends with people whom i grew up with in philly.

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 00:18 (thirteen years ago)

also, not all of the creative and ambitious people have left. evidenced by many friends who are doing quite well working in art and so on. eh.

for reasons of sass (the table is the table), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 00:24 (thirteen years ago)

some of it depends on where interests lie, you know? philly is great to me because a lot of friends who live there are into communal living, punk rock, and/or weird art. it kind of reminds me of oakland writ small, plus its cheaper.

muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Sunday, 14 October 2012 05:36 (thirteen years ago)

My friend was at that show; apparently there was glitter and gongs and a clarinet?

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 14 October 2012 05:50 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't notice any glitter (just the usual scraps of confetti from previous shows falling from the fans, rafters, speaker stacks, etc), and for most of the show I was too far to the left to see one of the two drummers (Thor Harris, I think?) who seemed to be on random instrument duty, but presumably he would have been the guy with the clarinet. What I did see of him was awesome, though- ridiculously buff shirtless 40-something dude with waist-length hair swaying back and forth and sawing on what I presume is the Handmade Violin Thing from the LP credits list.

Gira was on top form, too; I got tired just standing for three hours, but he was jumping across the stage, screaming, spitting, everything.

I wish I'd taken some video of the three fratbros who were standing in front of me, though, because they were fucking hilarious. All three were drinking constantly, and each one had their own little routine:

Bro the First: SUPER FUCKING INTENSE AIR DRUMMING. Like, head bowed down to waist level, headbanging, dramatic drum rolls all through the show.
Franz Broseph II: Conservative haircut, Fonz jacket, hands in pockets, lots of weirdly aggressive chin-jutting.
Third Bro For Whom I Cannot Think Of A Pat Nickname: Actual booty-shaking. Stomping. Air guitar to totally different songs. Mimed banging his head against a support pillar. <i>Literal honest to god jazz hands</i>.

Toward the end of the night they formed their own little mosh pit of three and I was seriously worried I would end up having to call 911.

#REV! (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 19 August 2013 22:46 (twelve years ago)

I thought it was amazing! My gateway into Pretentious Art Filmz when I was a kid was stuff like the Quay brothers, Peter Greenaway, etc, so I really love that kind of arch, heavily composed tableau style thing. I would have said hi but the people I was there with stuck around for a bit and I lost you in the general run for the exits. I was there with <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Whitney-Strub/e/B003UHAEOM/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_pop_1";>this guy</a> and his partner (you probably heard him asking about Parajanov's sexuality and the place of his work in the tradition of queer cinema). I'm just sad I had to miss out on the rest of the Parajanov program...

You won't regret the IHP membership, btw- doing that was the best decision I've made since moving here; it'll pay for itself before you know it.

Anywhere in Center City bounded by Front Street to the East, the river to the West, South Street to the South, and Market to the north

Walking along Kelly Drive is nice too, past the art museum to and to the Rowing Man

, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 11:02 (eleven years ago)

Maybe try the Italian Market (9th st btwn South and Washington)?

DERE is no DERE DERE (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 6 August 2014 11:21 (eleven years ago)

Chestnut and Walnut btwn like Broad and idk 20th-ish are mostly retail, Spruce, Pine, and Lombard are almost entirely residential, South st between 2nd and idk 10th or so is kind of a spot ppl like to go but idk

esp in terms of comparing philly area (which is obv part of the country i know best). i assume central PA is split by most recent championship wins (steelers before eagles and phillies before pirates). yankees more of a protrusion into PA than the giants. south Jersey obv i always knew was big philly sports territory. not sure about delaware coast tho -- i assume that's like bethany area? if so i guess that makes sense.

Seriously, like 90% of people stop in the fucking crossing with their back tires on the white stop line.

*and yeah, I know I'm not supposed to be on the sidewalk, but they were tearing up Broad Street, which is already godawful for cyclists, I was going at a walking pace, and this guy could've just as easily run into a pedestrian

There were some Philly episodes of Parking Wars about just that.

Yo Gotti Nutter Ting Hummin' (President Keyes), Monday, 6 October 2014 12:29 (eleven years ago)

Okay, so I'm planning to move to Philly next year and I'm looking at subletting a place January-March to get my feet on the ground. It's in East Kensington (though the posting for the apt. said "Fishtown"), which looks from my research to be a kind-of sketchy area, but on the upswing. My sister tells me not to go anywhere *near* there. Is she right? Should I keep looking in other neighborhoods? I'd like to live in a walkable area like NoLibs or Fishtown that's relatively close to Center City and close to public transit.

zchyrs, Monday, 13 October 2014 12:50 (eleven years ago)

Eh, it's sorta sketchy? But definitely on the upswing. Your sister would have been right 10 years ago, but probably not anymore. Also, you'll be quite a ways from public transit.

What type of living are you looking for and what's your price range? I try to convince everyone to move to West Philly because it's cheap, highly walkable, great food, lots of parks, etc, and very close to public transit to Center City, but it's a few miles out. NoLibs is not cheap and it is kind of super yuppified at this point. I'd recommend South Philly, maybe?

rad het chilly poppers (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 13 October 2014 20:20 (eleven years ago)

oh wait you're subletting. Where are you moving from?

rad het chilly poppers (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 13 October 2014 20:20 (eleven years ago)

I'm coming from rural/suburban northwest NJ. How do you mean that I'd be a ways from public transit? I've looked at maps of the area and the Berks El stop isn't too far a walk away. I'm definitely planning to go somewhere where I won't need a car.

zchyrs, Monday, 13 October 2014 20:59 (eleven years ago)

I guess I'm just spoiled because my apartment in West Philly ($725/month for a spacious 1br with an eat-in kitchen, gas/heat included, onsite laundry, back patio with a bike shed, hollaaaaa) is half a block from a trolley stop and I get cranky if I have to walk more than, like, 2 blocks to get to/from transit. All my friends who live off the El in Fishtown/Kensington live like almost a mile from their stop, it's so annoyyyyying

You won't need a car anywhere you live in Philly, especially if you consider getting a bike (it's super duper bikeable).

You should consider coming down for a day trip and checking out a few neighborhoods to get a better feel; they're all vastly different.

I don't know just how expensive Fairmount is but I know a few people who live there and love it. But besides that, you'd probably be content with anything South Philly-wise between South and Washington, and between Washington and Snyder east of Broad Street (or maybe a little bit west but not more than a few blocks).
