Gary Groth: What's your position on Ernie Bushmiller?
Clowes: I'm pro-Bushmiller. I mean, I don't like to get up on my soapbox and pontificate about Bushmiller as much as some of these people because I think that defeats the whole purpose. But to me, Nancy had an amazing atmosphere to it that I found kind of scary and off-putting, and really interesting. So yeah, I love Bushmiller, and this new guy who does Nancy should be shot.
G: For betraying the Bushmiller ethos?
C: Yeah, that's just awful dreck.

I like the weird hydrocephalic Nancy; my gut tells me it's a licensed piece from the strips nuttier period. Why is there no reprint set of Nancy material? It's certainly as marketable as Pogo.

Even '20s-'30s strips when it was Fritzi Ritz before Nancy spin-off, she didn't look like that.

haha forks I would get that
next tat I have lined up (hopefully as an xmas gift!) is a tat of the old Comics Code of Authority seal of approval
"Art Spiegelman explains how a drawing of three rocks in a background scene was Ernie's way of showing us there were some rocks in the background. It was always three. Why? Because two rocks wouldn't be 'some rocks.' Two rocks would be a pair of rocks. And four rocks was unacceptable because four rocks would indicate 'some rocks' BUT IT WOULD BE ONE ROCK MORE THAN WAS NECESSARY TO CONVEY THE IDEA OF 'SOME ROCKS.'"

I would think the tramp stamp comics code would be the classy way to go.All that Kitchen Sink stuff seems to have more or less disappeared from used book stores and comic shops in the city.I think Tundra did Cages? Kitchen Sink did fold, yes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitchen_Sink_PressA shame, cause they were simply a decade or so ahead of their time.

From an interview this week with Brian Walker:
GB: As a creator yourself, it must be interesting to track, if you even can, how your scholarship affected your own strips through the years. Is there a thought you have on that subtle dance?BW: In the late 1980s, I wrote a book about Ernie Bushmiller’s “Nancy.” I had always looked down on this strip, convinced that its appeal was limited to children and senior citizens. But after researching Bushmiller’s career I developed an appreciation for the deceptively simple and occasional surreal qualities of his work. Ernie’s advice to other cartoonists was, “Dumb it down.”

I got that first year Fanta reprint of the complete Nancy & there is defs some filler, just doing it so many decades there are a lot of standout ones, too.It does make me look at the comics page differently. Marmaduke is dumb as fuck for example but sometimes it will have composition, or a premise, that would seem avant garde out of context.

Everyone is posting about the new Nancy writer. To help you make your own comparison, here is an entire Nancy strip from a few weeks ago by the old (and I do mean old) writer, followed by a strip from the new one. pic.twitter.com/efOeUJWm8t— Cybernetically Enhanced Abby Denton (@mizabitha) April 18, 2018

I don’t think pluggers is that sentimental about thirty years ago. that’s some weird specific fixationdo you think a slightly-younger cartoonist would say “we had that 70s show and seinfeld” because... uh, damn

Thankfully that comic seems to have been published long after his death
Supposedly from 1998? That has to be a miscitation, right? Or the Gilchrists were showing the world that rock acts could have orchestras when... god, I can’t unravel how dumb and backward this is

tbf pbs stations even now show stuff like a special evening with the moody blues

That's because they buy programming from national PBS and stuff like Moody Blues concerts were paid for a long long time ago.

iirc they mostly show the “live at red rocks” which was kind of donated as a fundraiser show in 1993 or something. It’s up there with the mannheim steamroller christmas music shows in the rotation.
― mh, Friday, 20 April 2018 04:05 (seven years ago)
I'd be willimg to believe the Moody Blues paid for a Nancy feature back in the 60s. It was a prestige move.

maybe it's churlish to say but artwork-wise she doesn't really come close to the virtuosity of bushmiller
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 31 May 2018 22:01 (seven years ago)
nancy should've ended after bushmiller died imo. i like this new artist ok but i feel like her stuff would be just as good if she were drawing her own characters rather than her own versions of nancy and sluggo. (and yeah i realize that drawing a legacy strip that's already in a lot of papers results in more exposure for her work, which is fair.)
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 31 May 2018 22:18 (seven years ago)
The new strip has a melancholy, introverted sensibility that wasn't really in the Bushmiller comics. I think of Nancy similarly to Calvin ... she seemed unflappable and capable of anything. New Nancy seems a little more unsure of herself.

maybe it's churlish to say but artwork-wise she doesn't really come close to the virtuosity of bushmillerI mean, duh? She's a baby cartoonist, he was a zen genius who just saw a 300pp book published analysing a single strip Legacy strips are poison and ownership should always remain with the generating artist, BUT Jaimes is fantastic and I doubt there's been a better successor on any daily post-1950

Has there been any suggestion of who she actually is, yet?
I think it's settled into a comforting but rather blah groove since the amazing first few weeks. But at least one strip per week makes me laugh, which means it's 20% better than almost every newspaper strip ever.
I recently discovered this strip (now finished) which went under the radar in the UK - it's a twee but a pretty likeable kin to Peanuts / Calvin&Hobbes / the new Nancy: https://www.gocomics.com/culdesac/2017/05/09

Comments on the new strips are a window into another world
CHUCKBOWEN1 5 DAYS AGOActually, we have periodically taught algebra in primary schools. And the kids mastered it. Math reforms are always being pushed by the professional organizations, like NCTM, and by educational reform laws at both the state and federal levels. So, it is proven possible, and at some level, has been required of schools. With modern instructional methods, e.g., the progression of mastery as students age from concrete to semi-concrete to abstract algorithms, it is quite possible for children to think mathematically. The problem is not the kids. It’s the backlash from adults. That was true when I started teaching Second Grade in the 1970’s. “New Math” suffered pervasive complaints and ridicule and died off within a few years as.The most recent iteration is the ‘Common Core’ (http://www.corestandards.org/Math/), which is frequently the butt of negative memes in social media, as well as a target of unhappy parents’ complaints at PTO’s and school board meetings. It even garners the sometime attention of the broadcast and print media. As evidenced in this comment stream, most of the complaints boil down to two types. 1) Little kids can’t learn that stuff, because even (I) don’t understand it. (Yes, they can. Instruction has advanced. See “concrete =>semi-concrete =>abstract algorithms,” above.) 2) Little kids can’t learn that stuff, because I didn’t have to until high school. (Yes they can. See research summaries linked from the Common Core website URL, above.)In short, it is a fact that young kids taught appropriately can learn to operate and apply a type of algebra. It is also true that what kids can learn is irrelevant in public schools, because schools don’t operate rationally They exist politically in the American democratic environment. Schools are subjected to the whims of public opinion, politicians’ ambitions, and lobbyists. So what it is possible for kids succumbs to whatever happens to be the political flavor of the day.

Starting my next project---a graphic biography of my cartoon hero, "Nancy" creator, Ernie Bushmiller. Peeling back the layers and finding a nuanced, complex man whose life paralelled the evolution of comics in New York City from the Nineteen teens to the Seventies. Who knows, I may even uncover the identities of Sluggo's parents.

Why did you decide to lead off your run on the comic with the strip about Nancy eating corn bread?I went back and I looked at the end of [previous “Nancy” cartoonist] Guy Gilchrist’s run. Nancy as a character had drifted from where I envision her, in that the Nancy I know and love is a total jerk and also gluttonous and also has big feelings and voraciously consumes her world. And I was like, I need to do a character-reset week. Just kinda being like, Here’s who Nancy’s gonna be right now. And also, I love corn bread. So, that’s it. That’s the reason. I wanted to reset expectations and pay homage to my favorite food.

From a recent TCJ interview with underground comix legend Bill "Zippy the Pinhead" Griffith:
Can you give us a preview of your next project?I'll just say that it's a deeply researched biography of Nancy cartoonist Ernie Bushmiller--and the cartooning worlds he lived among in New York from the late 1910s to the 1970s--helped along considerably by interviews with Ernie's still-living friend Jim Carlsson and the generosity of Mark Newgarden in giving me access to interviews and research he and Paul Karasick did for How to Read Nancy. I'll just add a line of mine from an introduction I wrote for a Nancy anthology: "Peanuts tells you what it's like to be a child. Nancy tells you what it's like to be a comic strip."

last week's strips were all pretty damn funny
i get where the schulz comparisons are coming from, a lot of the non-meta nancy is dealing with the ridiculous things we do, and it's expressed through children on top of that
like schulz nancy's behavior is genuinely childlike most of the time, but her selfishness, laziness, and petty narcissism is something that's easy to relate to as an adult
it's actually kind of interesting how relatable a character nancy is for being a narcissist

Iirc, Jaimes draws and colors the strips on an iPad. It also seems like any papers still running daily strips run them in color (the last time I looked at the Houston paper--admittedly awhile ago--they were cut down from two b&w pages to the color back page of the culture/style section).

I haven’t clapped eyes on a daily comics page in aeons but I assumed they were still black and white
― silby, Monday, 4 May 2020 00:06 (five years ago)
Guess I also assumed that the color strips were produced in the traditional way where the artist hands in a black and white version and some hack at the syndicate does colors.

I follow the 'Nancy Comics by Ernie Bushmiller' account on twitter (@JohnnyCallicutt), as the name suggests it mainly posts Bushmiller strips, but it's recently done a few strips from early on in Guy Gilchrist's run, and they're actually ... quite good? Obviously paying homage to Bushmiller's style, I don't know how or when it went from this to four panels of Phil Fumble talking about his favourite classic rock albums.

those were co-created with his brother Brad Gilchrist, so maybe Brad was the talented one?
