Do you love the rain?

It's raining in Helsinki right now... I've come to realize that, even though I'm not a goth, nor a poet, nor the singer from Garbage, I love the rain.

I love the warm summer rain, when you can just go outside and run through the empty streets and jump on puddles and roll on the grass, and in general act like a child.

I love the cool autumn rain, when you can stay inside and watch the raindrops fall on trees that are yellow and red and brown, when you can drink something hot and you have the perfect right to be melancholic and contemplative.

And I love the spring rain, when the water forms little streams and earthworms rise on the surface, and afterwards the grass smells nice and the air feels fresh.

Go ahead, you can mock me on my tweeness.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

naw I feel the same way, except when I'm without my umbrella.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I love THUNDERSTORMS, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

No mocking here dude! I love the rain. I love sitting on my porch watching it rain on the park with my son and drinking tea. I love listening to really heavy scary rain coming down on the roof, so hard it sounds like it's going to tear right on through. Just thinking about the rain makes me feel a little more at ease in my soul.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, thunderstorms are great too! As a kid I always went out during thuderstorms even though you weren't supposed to. One time a lightning hit a street lamp six feet from me.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the rain when I don't have to be in it.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i like rain more than the sun most of the time.

I love a good thunderstorm...

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

What about running outside during a summer rain, if the air is warm and the raindrops are big? Anyone up for it?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

not in NYC, but if I was in the country, sure.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

rain is good, yes. st swithins day

kephm, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i like running in the summer rain. part of why i like rain is probably just because i seem to look better in winter/bad weather clothing than summery clothes. partially because i end up sweating profusely when the weather is stiflingly hot.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I could've swore I just recently posted something about doing something in a thunderstorm.

I can't stand the rain

Bumfluff, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Whereas I, ooh now I wish it would rain down, down on me. Yes, I wish it would rain, rain down on me now.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Being in the rain isn't too bad, so long as you can change clothes soon afterwards. I mean, it's just water.

xpost good cause that means i won't have to

The Nickalicious POV albums to listen to when it's raining:

1. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
2. Morphine - Like Swimming
3. Explosions In the Sky - The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place
4. Lovage: Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By
5. Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I suddenly got this uncontrollable urge to get me some sweets, so I went out in the rain to get them. Now my clothes are wet and I'm eating sweets. I feel like a kid.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

blame it on the sun, tuomas, as stevie wonder said.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to go camping in the hope it will rain, because i love the sound of the rain pattering against the roof of the tent.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, it's just water.

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 29 July 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Rain is wonderful.

People run into shelters and wave umbrellas about the place like the water's going to kill them, or the ecosystem has a vendetta against them or something.

Careful with that Almanac Eugene (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 29 July 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Rain on the roof while I'm going to sleep is very comforting. Thunder in the night prompts my 75 lb. dog to jump on the bed and vibrate like a tuning fork, which takes a bit of the romance out of the whole thing.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 29 July 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Thursday, 29 July 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I love rain. I love being out in the rain. It used to be a pain for me when I wore glasses because I would always have to protect those glasses from getting dirty with rain water, but now that I don't, I don't have to fret about that and can even look up as the rain pounds down, if I choose to do so. We're overdue for a really powerful thunderstorm locally. I want it to rain so hard everyone on the local news broadcasts is talking flash flooding, you look outside and the street you live on looks like a small stream, and local dams are filled to capacity. That's the kind of rain I like best.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 29 July 2004 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how the rain sounds on the part of my air conditioner that sticks outside -- that, and that I don't need to turn the air conditioner on because it's rainy and cool.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 29 July 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I find rain both relaxing and stimulating. There's some music (like Twerk's Living Vicariously Through Burnt Bread) that plays particularly well when you stay indoors on a rainy day.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 29 July 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the rain. Always have. I love the sound, visual, everything. The light is wonderful; diffuse and cozy. It's nice to think about right now. Vancouver's had the hottest summer in centuries, with several weeks of 30-38 degree temperatures, which is really horrid when we're used to 25-30 being the very hottest. We actually slept on the balcony last weekend to deal with the heat in our apartment.

What I really dislike is warm sun right after a good rainstorm, esp. in the summer, so that all the lawns and roads start to steam and the air is chokingly humid. blech.

If I'd discovered twee music in high school, I would have been so damn twee, listening to The Sundays while looking at the rain, but instead I listened to shoegazer bands, Portishead and Joni Mitchell, which is pretty good in retrospect.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 29 July 2004 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, rain. It's turning out to be a wet winter in California thanks to El Niño; both up in Carmel from the 26th through yesterday and now down here in OC there's been nothing but fairly steady rain on and off. Lots of rain fell last night and a new burst has begun just now. It's lovely not to have to be at work at all for this week, so I can sit it for the morning and just enjoy it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Sit IN for the morning, I should say.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It's always raining here - gets mighty tedious after a while.

I do like really really heavy rain though, when it comes down in sheets and the drains can't cope and everyone gapes from their windows. Mostly we just get regular rain though, with occasional drizzle and the odd shower. Interspersed with smir.

Smir, is anyone outside my family familiar with that word?

Rumpy Pumpkin, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

God you lot are weird.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

john1, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Was ist diese 'smir'?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oh FUCK YOU. i didn't come to california mid-winter for this. the rainfall doesn't create a nice opportunity for me to experience what normal people have to deal with everyday because i'm a normal person and i have to deal with this shit everyday.

it's not raining anymore but it's cloudy.

john1, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ok it's raining again.

john1, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't come to california mid-winter for this.

Next time, check the weather reports. It always rains this time of year (Dec-Feb) - this is the only time it does.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

'Smir' is a word my gran used for very fine drizzle. Don't know if it's real or made up but all my family use it to make the distinction between rain types....

Rumpty Pum pum pum, Thursday, 30 December 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The rain stopped today but there were still lots of clouds and the air was very clear so the mountains were visible and everything looked sharp.

youn, Thursday, 6 January 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the rain and find it arousing.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 6 January 2005 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Very fine drizzle" = "sprinkles" when Mom and I are commenting on weather.

And I still ADORE rain, even now, having experienced rainfall in the past 24 hours. Driving in the rain can be a pain in the ass, mostly because people around here have no fucking idea how to drive in any sort of precipitation at all, but that's the only drawback to rain I can think of. Gimme lots and lots and lots and LOTS of rain, I say! Let it POUR down!

Samantha Baker (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 6 January 2005 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It WAS great but after 9-10 days straight and getting soaked in the Tenderloin last night I am a little tired of it. Though I did see one single flash of lightning this morning.

The rain went a little while ago. The thunder was exciting, though it is better when you're curled up on the sofa with someone else/a cat, instead of sat at a computer trying to concentrate on work.

I don't think I posted upthread, but I would have mentioned that my mum told me that when I was very little I used to dance around in thunderstorms wearing nothing but a pair of wellies. Erk!

emil.y, Monday, 28 April 2008 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

Surmounter, Monday, 28 April 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, probably. This is the first decent rain I've seen since probably August/September last year. Apart from a morning in December (where I got soaked ahead of the Xmas work party, THANK YOU) and an evening in February (where I got soaked at a Sonic Youth concert, THANK YOU), it's been bone dry.

The scary thing is that I'm used to it now...

King Boy Pato, Monday, 28 April 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

Amazing brief London rainstorm just now. It probably smells lovely outside.

the pinefox, Monday, 28 April 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

There are lots of kinds of rain that I do not like, most of them involving me being caught outside and in danger of catching cold. Wet feet are the worst. But some rain is great:

1) a big Midwestern thunderstorm, putting on a big, loud, Wagnerian performance.

2) the mid-winter rain that washes away the dirty snow and makes room for fresh snow.

3) the hot summer afternoon rain that makes being outside tolerable again, however briefly.

4) the quiet spring rain that's perfect for opening the windows and putting "The Rain Song" by Zeppelin on the stereo.

kenan, Monday, 28 April 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

i like a nice downpour. makes london look better and less disgusting and dirty.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 28 April 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

I really love getting soaked on the way to work and then sitting for a whole morning with trousers that are absolutely wringing/heavy and chafing. It's a rare delight. I also love standing at a bus stop that doesn't have a shelter in the rain for half an hour in Glasgow in December and subsequently having a bout of asthma that keeps me up half the night. Also I love being splashed by cars that have driven through a large puddle that was caused by rain, staining my newly dry-cleaned trousers.

Fuck is wrong with you people?

had a nice walk home thru Wagnerian skies, a flurry of light hail as i left work followed by intermittent brightness and dark spray

eremitic brid (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 19 May 2015 17:03 (ten years ago)

on Saturday evening i spent the absolute best 20 minutes sat with Han by the big fountain in town as the sky darkened and the wind kept swinging the spray around us

Beautiful, rainy day here in Seattle.

kate78, Saturday, 21 May 2016 19:57 (nine years ago)

raining so hard in hilo the lines on the roads have completely disappeared. keeps you on yr toes

le Histoire du Edgy Miley (difficult listening hour), Saturday, 21 May 2016 20:25 (nine years ago)

but yes it is my favorite. we had something like a drought last summer -- hard blue skies for weeks -- and i started telling people i had seasonal affective disorder

le Histoire du Edgy Miley (difficult listening hour), Saturday, 21 May 2016 20:28 (nine years ago)

ha yes, i sometimes feel i have "reverse" seasonal affective disorder. not a huge fan of the cold, however.

lute bro (brimstead), Saturday, 21 May 2016 20:30 (nine years ago)

my position's always been that cold's preferable to heat cuz you can always put on another layer but the reverse isn't true -- but this is just bias because i have extensive experience with steaming jungles and none with, like, minnesota, where i'm sure there wouldn't be enough layers in the world for me

le Histoire du Edgy Miley (difficult listening hour), Saturday, 21 May 2016 20:34 (nine years ago)

i can kind of get into intense dry heat, it makes me feel alive and present and more connected with the cosmos or something.

lute bro (brimstead), Saturday, 21 May 2016 20:44 (nine years ago)

Cold+rainy no, likewise having to sit at work in wet clothing. Otherwise love it, especially in the warm summer while pleasantly buzzed.

Ill take extreme heat bc you can run around almost naked and pour water all over yourself in necessary

always be charging (rip van wanko), Monday, 23 May 2016 21:02 (nine years ago)

always good social etiquette to run around scantily clad pouring water all over yourself while you wait to be seated at your favourite restaurant

I think I'd lose my job if I tried that at work.

I can't say my relationship with rain is a deeply-smitten love affair. I would say I am very comfortable with it. We're old acquaintances.

"acquaintances" is a good word for what oregon calls rain. here it fucks torridly

brimstead, Monday, 6 November 2017 20:09 (eight years ago)

Saturday night we had some monstrous rainfall, had to get out of bed and check outside because it sounded so great.

Ste, Monday, 6 November 2017 21:34 (eight years ago)

I really love getting soaked on the way to work and then sitting for a whole morning with trousers that are absolutely wringing/heavy and chafing. It's a rare delight. I also love standing at a bus stop that doesn't have a shelter in the rain for half an hour in Glasgow in December and subsequently having a bout of asthma that keeps me up half the night. Also I love being splashed by cars that have driven through a large puddle that was caused by rain, staining my newly dry-cleaned trousers.

Fuck is wrong with you people?

gah lol you are correct, i don't know why i was reviving some posi rain thread

i do agree that getting heavily rained on is no good. but that feeling when you come home and get dry/warm it rather heavenly.

brimstead, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 01:54 (eight years ago)

sometimes i think the best is a light misting.. by the sea.. that's good stuff

brimstead, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 01:56 (eight years ago)

wait i DO know why i was reviving some posi thread... because of the opening post.. oh well whatever *raindance*

brimstead, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 01:58 (eight years ago)

I've converted this to an mp3 and play this when I've trouble sleeping. There's something intensely soporific and comforting about the sound of rain on a car roof.

love the rain. last week i was on vacay in Portland and it was so nice just like living inside of a cloud.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 14:57 (eight years ago)

I loved the rain yesterday because some jackass had had themselves a great time recreationally spraying a fire extinguisher all over the sidewalk in front of the building, leaving behind drifts of dubious yellow powder, and the rain washed it away.

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 7 November 2017 15:09 (eight years ago)

yeah lurv the rain on a roof. Also the sound of rain dripping through leaves, which I get to hear from my bedroom window a lot.
