My friend told me Toadie had been kidnapped by the mafia, and I believed him.

I miss watching Neighbours, I could just put the telly on, but I can't concentrate on it for than 5 minutes. If I can't watch it twice a day, there's no point.

The highlight of my week was realising that Neighbours and Home and Away simultaneously have characters with an eye patch.

You can tell Comedy Inc is bad before it even starts, because they have that title sequence that does wacky BOING things all over the place, as if to say 'HEY LOOK! WE'RE ZANY! WE GUARANTEE THE ONSET OF HILARITY!' Any decent fucking comedy doesn't need to proclaim itself as such so bloody noisily.

This was good shit last night. Thank goodness I'm able to get home in time for this week's action packed episodes.

The latest is that half of Ramsay St (inc Susan, the Bishops sans Harold, Connor, Dylan and Sky) has gone on a joy-flight (which seems to involve dressing up in 30s clothing and piping trad jazz into the plane) to some holiday resort. But there's a bomb on board which blows up one of the engines and they have to make a crash landing into the sea! Who will survive? This is Dynasty type stuff, albeit with rubbish effects - we didn't even see the plane crash!

did the guy from big brother and cindi ever officially hook up? is toadie still around? hasnt there already been a 'bad harold' storyline? what happened to karl's woman? wasnt she hiding some dreadful secret that had something to do with her being preggers? are jow and paul played by the original guys?

Toadie's still around, lawyering and having a long distance relationship with a wrestler/teacher/singer. He's been wrestling recently. As has Connor as The Shamrock!

The Hazman had a mild stroke and went a wee bit nuts but is alright now. However, Aussie spoilers indicate he's gonna lose it when he gets some bad news.

Karl's woman was eventually found out after a long and protracted storyline. Izzy, for it is she, was eventually dobbed in when Darcy came out of his coma and showed Susan the medical records proving it wasn't her baby but Gus's (the mental mate of her brother who died in the Lassiters fire) But she lost the baby after a boating accident, so it avoided any controversial abortion story lines. When Karl find out he has a crazy breakdown in the middle of the street. It was awesome. She also had an affair with Paul. Poor Karl. He'll bounce back I hope!

Lou's been kicked out his house by Paul and now lives in a tent in the trailer park. Poor Lou! Loses his wife, his kid, his business...

Paul and Joe are played by the original actors, oh yes indeed.

Can't believe I just typed all this nonsense out! Oh well, I'm between calls at work.

It's hard for the people in Harold's house to be too sad, as they are obv. keeping their jobs.

The crash has been a catalyst that's sent Neighbours into new realms of ludicrousness, and it's been all the better for it. People turning up at their own memorial services! Drew's ghost haunting Steph! (Offscreen) prison riots! Deathbed weddings! Siblings of obviously different ethnicities!

Where you at now, Britishes? I've not been keeping up as I was further upthread, because in recent months they brought in a whole slew of new characters into one house (after Izzy left) and - and this is by Neighbours standards - they are THE WORST actors I have EVER seen in an Aussie soap. By god.

I especially hate that turdy police sergeant pig shooter fuckwit. Why did he get more of a major role? He's dreadful.

Is Skye gonna end up with Stingray? I hope so. I like Stingray. He's really cute.

But no more of the disturbing love affair with Lyn.

Stingray is not cute, but I always like how he gets drunk off like one beer. Episode titles are still super classic.

I like that they've stepped it up in to funny thriller mode, with the worst baby thief ever, she revealed her intentions way too soon - sitting there vigorously rubbing Sky's belly and talking to the unborn child.

Nothing's too much for Neighbours, this is what I think. It can do everything!

I love that Neighbours has shameless steals of everything! My favourite being half the story of Ghost World (Sky). It almost always offers up something great - like quite recently, Harold and Lou having an in depth conversation about the storyline of Howls Moving Casle - I think it's the greatest unsung comedy of our times. YES! You sort of sense the writers have a lot of fun and try and fit in as much reference to things they like and just mess around.

I love that Katya's dodgy past is now so overblown she is MASTER CAR THEIF and that it also TURNS HER ON like a weird sexual addiction. Even if she has a massive face.

Oh absolutely, the thing that sets it above other crappy daytime soaps is it's self-awareness, the writers know it's crappy and are not above putting in the odd slyly subversive touch.

On the new people: I quite like the gambler and the ridiculously dizzy blonde. They are notthe worst actors in it, I'd give that honour to Katya and the dreadful Ned Parker.

I'm comforted by Rachael being 16 now, although she's gottenb rather irritating recently. Stingray can fuck off. Janelle is fantastic value for money especially for her "easy on the eyes, pretty easy on the brain too" comment re: Ned. He is an absolute imbecile and Carmella is far too good for him. Lynn can also fuck off.

I am looking forward to th channel5 switchover for the sole reason that it should mean a neighbours omnibus. Not that neighbours causes me to put less energy into the job hunt but it does slightly temper the sorrow of unemployment. Working this week though and getting Ramsay Street withdrawal.

Last time I watched it, Jim Robinson was lying on the kitchen floor with blue lips. I remember the lips vividly.

Last night I dreamt that I watched Neighbours for the first time in ages. There was a crew of vampires who'd come to Ramsey St to prey, in disguise as a troop of travelling opera singers. Lou was the only one who'd sussed them out, and the episode revolved around him getting sectioned for going around ranting about vampires. When woke up I was like 'fuck me Neighbours has got good recently, must watch again!'

Lou Carpenter seems to have adopted a man of peace persona, and has taken to mediating between the warring factions and chairing unsuccessful peace conferences. The last shot was of him standing in the middle of the street shaking his head sadly. I expected a single tear to roll down his cheek.

I've watched Neighbours maybe once a year for the last ten years, and Toadie has been in it every time.

Dee is not Dee but a lookalike who is scamming Toadie for money with help from his other ex Sindi. It is insane and brilliant for being so.

I watched it pretty obsessively for ten to fifteen years! but the drop in interest was sudden and total.

I even did the 'meet the Neighbours' thing when I was in Melbourne and have a photos of myself with Toadie and Dr Karl.

any time I read about Neighbours in the tv guide etc I am always amazed at what nonsense they have going on and find myself going through spurts of watching it for a week then abandoning it for months. Recently we've had: Dee Bliss coming back from the dead to have a showdown with her doppleganger (played by the same actress), a polyamorous throuple, and Denise Van Outen as a cult leader. Teatime soaps weren't like that when I was young.

Neighbours has always a had a bit of an unhinged undercurrent, which is a major part of its appeal - cf Bouncer's Dream, or Jim taking magic mushrooms by mistake.

I remember actually seeing a breast once. It was a scene with a girl pinning up clothes on a washing line, for some reason the camera was positioned on the floor looking up at her and as she reached up you could see up her top and pretty sure I saw no bra.

somehow revisiting old Neighbours clips ca late-90s/early-00s is always a very, um, "hauntological" experience for me. I think it's something to do with the incidental music they used at the time, especially during sad moments. there was one piece in particular with guitar that often used to play during the Dee's disappearance storyline, someone on YouTube made an interesting reconstruction, it almost sounds like Resident Evil save room music or an Akira Yamaoka composition from Silent Hill

I haven't watched it in about 15 years but im still sad. I watched it from as far back as I can remember (it started on uk tv when I was 2) until about the mid 00s - when I left university, so probably 20 years.

Haven't watched regularly in over 20 years but every time I see a story about the final episode I feel a visceral pang of deep deep sadness, like death is near. I somehow thought I'd accepted my decline into middle age, but I believed the sunny Erinsborough counter-world would just exist eternally, generations of strange adventures for Rebecchis, Daniels, Robinsons. Not so. rip.

Ya me too. I've started watching the past couple of weeks - veers from tedious corny boreathon to weird in-jokes and random scenarios (just watched a whole 'corporate espionage' gag on the viewer within one ep). Will watch til the end.

I was reading that they've been doing some really nice things for the die-hard fans, for example naming characters who appear in one scene after people who campaigned actively on Twitter against the axing.

I don't know how the two actors who play Susan and Izzy kept a straight face during the scenes last week when Izzy turned up in a relationship with the Kennedy son and said to Susan "maybe one day I can call you mum"

that finale was really cheesy and it did make me roll my eyes a few times but overall I thought it was a really nice way to end the show. Kylie's appearance was utterly pointless though.

Kind of delightful how much Guy Pearce committed to it - it was all him!

This has convinced me to watch.

Susan was also exceptionally cruel to Izzy in their last encounter - I think it was meant to come across as pity but telling someone "you need to learn to like yourself" is actually quite harsh.

I didn't really click until a friend mentioned it - the show has always been based on families and family units, so the finale having two lesbian couples deciding to pursue their relationships and a gay couple decide to stay in Ramsay St with their "chosen family," that was a nice reflection of how the concept of family has changed in the 37 years or so since the show began. Especially as Home & Away seems to have had no homosexual characters last more than a few weeks.

Guy Pearce was great! I'm having fun clicking around the fan sites remembering mad old storylines. I watched this show for pretty much my entire life until the late 2000s. A nice way to go out, even if we never got to see Susan's rumoured arm tatts.

Biggest shock for me watching recent episodes: they have actual, licensed music now!
They even had British Sea Power playing in one episode.
