This be the top fifty. Do we associate these users with a specific musician or musicians? I was just thinking while reading some of these posts how I'll think "Alex in NYC" and then think "Killing Joke", or how roxymuzak is always going on about Widespread Panic. Any others?

I'll say Belle and Sebastian for all this lot, as that's how I know them.

Of the people I don't actually know:
Alex in NYC = Killing Joke
Nickalicious = Fishbone
Jel = Poison and/or Bon Jovi
Kate = Sonic Boom/Spiritualised, and the Lollies, obviously

Everyone else I could do an answer for doesn't appear to be in the top 50. I could have a fair shout at other people's taste, but these are the ones that are inextricably linked in my mind.

2 ||amateur!st|| - basically there's a whole canon of old school R&B/folk music/other stuff that you might find a few pages devoted to in "Mojo" but that doesn't get discussed all that much on ILM, and Amateur!st sort of takes care of that stuff. I mean this only as praise, because it's almost always stuff I lurve. Oh, and due to recent developments - Bruce Springsteen!

3 Ned Raggett - probably the easiest one: MBV, Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure. Quite verbal about his likes & dislikes.

4 hstencil -laptopism, Drag City

5 Alba - The Smiths

8 Tuomas -Pikku G!

14 roxymuzak - Blur, Oasis

15 Gear! - Herbie Hancock, Wilco

16 the neurotic awakening of s - early 90's Dance

17 Huck - Country

18 CeCe Peniston - almost as easy as Ned: Good Charlotte, Limp Bizkit, AC/DC

19 nickalicious - Beck, Outkast, Ween, Fishbone.

20 I CAN LEAD YOU THROUGH THE ZONE - Wolf Eyes, Boredoms (I'm not sure the first group actually exists outside of JW's mind, tho, they're like his Lloyd Cole!)

22 Kate The Saint- VU, Spacemen 3, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Delays

25 oops- Jamaican music

29 lauren - The Normal (due to e-mail addy), Bruce Springsteen

30 Matt DC - Run-D.M.C. (again, e-mail addy, don't even know if he likes them!)

31 Alex in NYC - the Simpson sisters

36 Liz :x -wait, is she the same person as The Lex? If so, Sugarbabes, Shystie, Blue.

39 jaymc -Outkast, Jesus & Mary Chain

40 jel -Pavement, Bon Jovi, Poison, Slayer, t.A.t.U., Neil Young

44 Cozen - Britpop?

46 stockholm cindy - Talking Heads, Wilson Philiphs, Bob Dylan

50 suzy - The Jesus & Mary Chain, especially that one time when she met them at a party with Alex James of Blur and Tony Blair's second cousin who told her some VERY INTERESTING things about John Peel and...;-)

No, I do. You always start posting in my wee hours.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Maria D: I meant Cradle of Filth for Maria Lyra. Unless you're her.

oh okay - nope i'm not.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That's when me daily insanity takes grip

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok how about other people who don't rank in the top 50?

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah! How about some of the TITTWIS crew? (*click click wink*)

Chris V I always associate with Kings of Convenience for some reason.
Julia I always associate with Ben Harper, again for some reason.
Sarah McLusky -- duh, McLusky themselves!
Casuistry -- uh, maybe R.E.M.? This is just a wild guess.
Sam totally reminds me of Elliott Smith and the Beasties.
With luna, I will always make a Al Green and Tower of Power connection.
Nichole Graham will always remind me of Pulp.
Trayce I can see listening to Skinny Puppy or VNV Nation, since she reminds me of a really close personal friend of mine who listens to the aforementioned.
nickalicious I will never stop connecting with Fishbone and Ween.
Tep (dude, where are you?) will always remind me of David Bowie.

Leee, I will always associate you with Sleater-Kinney and Autechre.
Ned I'd easily associate with Depeche Mode, The Cure, and MBV.
With Dan Perry I will always make a The Cure and Prince connection.
It's be way too easy with a notably sizeable chunk of you to connect you guys with Belle & Sebastian, since you came from that fan list.
Alex in NYC? Killing Joke, DUH. (Also Belfegore.)
Kate Masonic Boom? A huge number of artists, but I think her most current association could be made with Busted. Oh, and always anything played by those Dirty Dronerock Boys she posts on about. ;)

I'd have to do some seriously wild guessing with the rest of you.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

(Oh! And SF Sean will always = early-era Japan to me, because we spent quite a few hours discussing Japan in chat last summer, when I was still kinda getting to know everyone around here.)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

(Oh! And dude! Melissa W is totally all about the Radiohead love.)

(Trayce, I just read the earliest parts of the thread again and I apologize for foisting some more "darkpop" on you. Eek.)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehe its ok Dee ;) I dont mind VNV and I guess I cant be suprised at eveyrone saying Im a goth when I keep posting pics of me looking such.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Trayce = Birthday Party!

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Suzy's the only one who's got me so far. Do I really talk about music so little on these boards? (answer = yes)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't cross over from Sinister. I'm not even sure what that is. Is it something for British people? I am Amurrican.

I associate Chris V with Rye Coalition because he looks like he should be in Rye Coalition.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it something for British people?

It's for Belle and Sebastian fans. Extrapolate accordingly. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Weird. I don't think I've heard more than 3 or 4 Belle and Sebastien songs. They were pleasant, but not something I'd really buy or get obsessed about.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It is good, how no-one associates me with any - pop music.

I liked RJG's post.

JtN = ?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

When I said people not on the top 50 I really meant ME.

(Thanks D!)

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought a Chavez CD once. It scared me, so I sold it back the next day. Then I got into Belle & Sebastian.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Leee, I did you earlier!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

This is what I get for working- I fall off the Top 50 list, who knows what'll happen next? Things snowball (in the twinkling of an eye)

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The Chavez/Belle and Sebastien split is where every single one of our personality differences came from. I think we were essentially the same person before that, and you are the alternate universe me where I decided to like Belle and Sebastien instead of Chavez. It's like a terrible terrible Philip K. Dick novel.

na (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry and thanx JMC!

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Morley = Pavement

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Chavez was the best band to ever put out a record on Matador. They were really loud and had RIFFS and yet were catchy and weird. They put out two albums and then just stopped doing stuff. They never really broke up, just never played any more shows (well, they played one reunion show a few months ago) or recorded anything else. One of the dudes (Matt Sweeney) went on to have his talents wasted in Zwan (Billy Corgan's post-Smashing Pumpkins band).

Some people I know (cough cough, lurker) find Matt Sweeney ridiculously hot.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

They were a pretty hot band in general. James Lo is a fucking awesome drummer and I am tempted to email him, find out what he's up to, and if it's not much, if he wants to be in a band with me.

Well I guess I've managed to keep my music tastes pretty well hidden!

Nobody has associated me with any music save the White Stripes, which I assume is merely in jest, though I have made a few direct and several oblique references to music. I should probably attempt to encourage the mystery.

BEST LYRICS EVER

I hear the roar of a big machine
Two worlds and in between
Hot metal and methedrine
I hear empire down
I hear empire down

I hear the roar of a big machine
Two worlds and in between
Love lost, fire at will
Dum-dum bullets and shoot to kill, I hear
Dive, bombers, and
Empire down
Empire down

I hear the sons of the city and the dispossessed
Get down, get undressed
Get pretty but you and me,
We got the kingdom, we got the key
We got the empire, now as then
We don't doubt, we don't take direction
Lucretia, my reflection, dance the ghost with me...

We look hard
We look through
We look hard to see for real
Such things I hear, they don't make sense
I don't see much evidence
I don't feel
I don't feel
I don't feel

A long train held up page on page
A hard reign held up by rage
Once a railroad
Now it's done...

I hear the roar of a big machine
Two worlds and in between
Hot metal and methedrine
I hear empire down...

We got the empire, now as then
We don't doubt, we don't take reflection
Lucretia, my direction, dance the ghost with me...

Yes, OK, the ghost, yes, let's all do the GHOST. Man I'd love to hear this song one day.

It was quite fun to see what other posters associated with me. Thing about ILX is because it doesn't rely on avatars it's often hard to remember what conversations were had with whom. I don't think I really paid much attention to the various posting habits of different ILXORS until about 2005 - until then I pretty much viewed it as a sort of soupy hivemind that I interfaced when bored at work.
