Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes. It's the adjective part that's difficult about this, though.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Even.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Still?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Is 'even' a noun?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Or "still"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, it is an alternative word for "evening" and it can be used to refer to an even as opposed to an odd number, eg "you add the evens and the odds together".

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

er wait, maybe that loses on the "verb" front.

sgs (sgs), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

that's why you should try and include an example before you post :))

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

bum.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

my house will house the house party, Sarah.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"how does one house?"

this estate housed 5 families

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"A house party" sounds a bit unclear on the adjective side, "house rules" would perhaps be better?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

house wine.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaft Driven?

Davel (Davel), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

26. phone "pick up the phone" "i phoned you" "phone sex"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"shaft driven" would be an adjective, but shaft itself isn't in this example

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm confused... In English, does any noun that's put in front of another noun as an attribute automatically become an adjective? In "snowball fight", is "snowball" an adjective?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

27. well "draw water from the well" "tears welled" "i am well"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm confused... In English, does any noun that's put in front of another noun as an attribute automatically become an adjective? In "snowball fight", is "snowball" an adjective?
-- Tuomas (tuomas.alh...), August 9th, 2004 11:16 AM. (later)

it's objectionable really. in this example i guess "snowball" in "snowball fight" qualifies the word "fight" to a particular kind of fight, i.e. with snowballs.

of course there are some words that you can put a lot of random nouns in front of to turn them into an adjective... the challenge in this thread is to try and find adjectives that are actual ones that are applied to more than one occasion (like, it's hard to use "snowball" to describe any nouns other than "fight")

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

another crap one 28. bitch "what a bitch" "are you going to bitch about me?" "bitch slap"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, in Finnish a "snowball fight" would just be a composite noun made of two nouns.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

29. rear "kicked in the rear" "she was reared by wolves" "rear bumper"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

29. slave
i'm a slave 4 U, slave ancestors, slave to the rhythm

isn't "well" an adverb?

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it's an adverb as well as an adjective noun and a verb! it's amazing!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

30. thin - mint x, to x out, the x man

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't the verb for "slave" "enslave"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ace.

1)A playing card. 2)"That shit is ace!" 3) "I was up all night studying, but it was worth it - I aced my chemistry final."

(The third one is a quote from the Freesearch dictionary.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

enslave is when you make someone a slave

to slave can mean to be working in a similar manner of a slave (i.e. hard)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

sgs (sgs), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

37. lead "a piece of lead" "lead me to your leader" "lead role"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Do "close" and "lead" count if they are pronounced differently in their different roles?

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, are they even the same word?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

38. star

lucky star, to star in a film, a star performance

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

39. camp

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

kate it's BEST when they're pronounced differently (as long as they're spelt the same)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

oooh 39. was a good one.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

40. blank "that was a blank" "i blanked her" "blank expression"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, no, Ken. If they are pronounced differently, it's often a linguistic sign that they are different words with different sources and meanings which have been standardised into being spelled the same. Those don't count!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 9 August 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

41. right
a human right, to right a wrong, do the right thing

42. wrong
the wrong girl, to wrong someone, a wrong turn

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 9 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

messed up that last example, but it still works.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 9 August 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuomas is far too good at this for someone who's not a native English speaker!

I agree that some of these adjectival uses - 'snowball', 'house' etc - are really just compound nouns. Also, surely homonyms don't count?? (oh xpost w. Kate.)

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

43. bukkake - "calum sure enjoyed that bukkake" "i bukkaked over calum" "haha omg check out calum's bukkake face!!"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

44.

i know they're not really same words but homonyms are kinda clever!

anyway lead can be a noun like "power lead".

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

oops!

44. end "the end" "end it" "end game"

Ex: He's one "Jive" dude.
Perjorative. Someone not well liked.
JAMF - Jive A-- Mother F----R.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 9 August 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yellow.

1)A yellow flower. 2)"He was wearing yellow." 3)"I yellowed my shirt."

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

47. read - "a good read", "i'll read it", "i'm a read person"

tuomas hates numbers

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm, colours are weird. I don't think that second example of yellow works as a noun. You CAN say 'a yellow', like 'a bright yellow' 'this yellow is nicer that that yellow'. But is it still implicitly an adjective, with the noun ellided?

'Read' is NOT an adjective ken!

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a bit dodgy but what about like "i'm well read" "i'm sparsely read" "this philistine is so thinly read" etc.?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Substitute.

1)"You can substitute soy for meat." 2)"I'm his substitute." 3)Substitute teacher.

Archel, according to the Freesearch dictionary yellow can be both a noun and an adjective. If you say "I have a bright yellow T-shirt", it's an adjective, but if you say "You should wear more yellow", it's a noun.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes but that is a past participle of a verb, just being used in a similar way to an adjective.

xpost, to ken that was.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure that is correct Tuomas, it just feels wrong. Both of those sentences feel like adjective phrases to me.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

but so are words like "deceased" "incensed"???

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. But since they are not spelt the same as their infinitive, there would be no temptation to use them [WRONGLY] on this thread ;)

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, in this case "a yellow" is a hue, and "a hue" certainly is a noun.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes in that usage yellow is definitely a noun. But in 'more yellow' it's ambiguous.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, okay, sometimes the semantics escape me, what with being a foreigner and all...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell, they escape me 90% of the time too :) I'm just making it up.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread is getting hard.. so like, if they didn't come from the same thing it's not the same word even if it's spelt the same way??

so words like "fast" shouldn't be in?? because in something that's "fast" and "to fast" the words came from different roots?? even if it's spelt the same and pronounced the same way?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

49. home - "my home" "homes in" "home ground"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Colours can be nouns, they're just abstract nouns. I mean, sure, you can't have a Red. (Well, unless it's a pill.) But neither can you have A Justice (well, unless you mean a Justice of the Peace) but the quality of justice is still a noun.

I know I'm contradicting myself here, but...

Either way, I have more of a problem with yellow as a verb than as a noun.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I think 'fast' is ok. Couldn't tell you exactly why though!

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

50. chance

take a chance on me; i wouldn't chance it; a chance meeting.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Maria D. (Maria D.), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

52. Deal. 1) a good deal 2) deal the cards 3) a deal table
(Admittedly I have no idea what a deal table is, it's like wooden or something right?)

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

wow 50 was good!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"telling" isn't the verb though is it?? (that'd be "tell"?)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, if we allow "-ing" words, this'll be too easy. I think we should have verbs in their basic form only.

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

53. Glass "don't break the glass" "i wanted to glass him" "glass table"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

similarly
54. stone "nice stone" "let's stone chris martin" "stone wall"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

55. grass "nice grass" "oi! if you grass me i'm gonna snap you in 'alf innit" "grass court"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

smurf
"Oh yeah, I fucked that smurf."
"It was smurfy."
"She asked me to smurf on her tits."

i am so going to smurf hell for this (nickalicious), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, but "smurfy" is a no no, it has to be the same exact form in every case. Are you sure it wouldn't work without the -y?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

56. roast "sunday roast" "Kieron Dyer and Frank Lampard sure roasted that chick good last night" "roast chicken"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I was walking home just now and thought of "blow"--but then realized I only had the tenuous "blow fly" as adjective. Sure, there's he/she/it blows, and let's all do some blow off a mirror...sigh.

sgs (sgs), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The adjectives are definitely the trickiest.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Mass.

1)A mass of sand. 2)"People massed on the shore in order see the fireworks." 3)Weapons of mass destruction.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

They are! and hahaha I forgot blow job. Although I assume that's really one word.
(xpost)

sgs (sgs), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still wrestling with the problem of whether something is automatically an adjective if it goes before, or qualifies, a noun. Or whether it just becomes part of a compound noun. It's making my head hurt, I know that.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the difference between compound noun and adjective is if the same word can be applied to multiple different nouns. Snowball Fight is clearly a compound noun, because you can't have, say, a Snowball Table or something. But you can have, say Mass Destruction or Mass Panic, for example, which makes Mass an adjective, rather than a compound.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Can "to game" be used as a verb? You can have "a game" and you can also say "I'm game", but can you "game"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

mmm i've never heard it.. but you can be a gamer, and enjoy gaming.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the difference between compound noun and adjective is if the same word can be applied to multiple different nouns. Snowball Fight is clearly a compound noun, because you can't have, say, a Snowball Table or something.

what about Snowball maker?? Snowball chaos!!

(kidding :))

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

although

59. snow - "patch of snow" "when will it snow" "snow man"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah "telling" was kind of cheating.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The casino industry (in the U.S. at least) uses "game" and its deriviatives to avoid using the word "gamble," so they are probably already using it as a verb.

Pink.
Noun: the color, or a flower related to the carnation.
Adjective: of or pertaining to the color.
Verb: to cut in an ornamental fashion.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you Kate, that clarifies things! (So not sure about 'snow'. 'Snowman' is one word really.)

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

TV producers these days are yelling "Gay it up!"; Oh to be in gay Paris; Gays will soon fight for the sanctity of divorce.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I've only heard the noun used in plural form, so again I'm cheating. You wouldn't say "Is he a gay?"

Maria D. (Maria D.), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

so, is PinXor the only ilxor who is a noun, a verb and an adjective?!

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

snow fight? snow scene? snow storm? snow dome? snow graffiti? (oh wait)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

In the UK the noun form of 'gay' has become fairly common. 'I'm the only gay in the village!'

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

would you believe it, there's an actual entry on dictionary.com for best as a verb! listed as colloquial but ok. i guess we had "dope" "chill" and "butt"!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

in which case
86. ok - "he has given the ok" "did he ok that?" "that song is ok"

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not colloquial according to m-w.com

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

There are far too many dodgy adjectives on this thread.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

m-w.com also sez that "cash" can be used as an adjective but its proferred definition is too specialized for me to use in a sentence.

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

87. Front

"They had sex"
"She is sex" (not too sure about this as verb)
"I wanna sex you up"

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think your second example counts as an adjective -- it is equiv. to "She is Sex" which is noun.

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

And 'sex up' is not the same as 'sex' (though Cathy has just started using sex as a weapon verb on another thread and I like it. I never knew what sexing the cherry meant.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Well you could say "sex me" - colloquial, but a verb in that usage.

As for adjective, saying "sex" instead of "sexy" is a stretch I realise. Im sure it has been done though.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

too obvious, but "fuck" fits pretty much anywhere in a sentence.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck is not an adjective though. I wish some grammar whizz could come along and tell me the name for 'fuck' in 'fuck buddy', snow in 'snow angel' etc.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"That shirt you're wearing is totally fuck, bro"

oops (Oops), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

My grammar is poor to middling to these days, but if you're willing to admit common usages, people say things like "he's over there doing fuck all" where fuck seems to act something like an adjective.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, someone already has. Compound nouns.

x-post

Alba (Alba), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck buddy isn't a compound noun though! unless your buddy really is a fuck. although that's true as well. but really your're referring the sweet sweet verb you're going to perform together.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

'Screw flicks' and 'suck girls' are both things I've encountered in late night porno excursions.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Both are compound nouns.

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I wasn't paying attention.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Hrm.
Snow ball and fuck buddy, well, it could be argued that you could make those compound nouns by joining the words together ("adj that is a noun" + "noun"), hence compound. Nouns *can* be used as adjectives to "define or describe another noun": house fly, porch light, snow ball. The first noun becomes, through the magic of grammar, an adjective b/c it's "describing a noun" (which is the definition of an adjective.) The adjective/noun then joins the noun in some grammatical unholy evolution and become the compound noun: housefly, porchlight, snowball. Fuck buddy is slang, really - I think that's what makes it confusing. I'd say it's short for the gerund "fucking" simply b/c fucking buddy just makes things even more confusing. The fucking fuck is fucking fucked. But I love it.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

nice one.
stone - a skipping stone, to stone someone to death, stone cold (steve austin)
This has now made me wonder (afresh) about the noun/adj thing - just because a word goes in front of the noun does not make it the adj. See French. So, in "stone cold", cold could be called the adjective and stone the noun. Same with snow ball and fuck buddy (ball of snow, buddy of fuck(ing)). Stopping now.
