My girlfriend asked me to buy her some underwear for her birthday...

Where should an easily embarrassed man shop for women's underwear in London? Or are there good online alternatives? What are the chic brands? I'm clueless, all I know is that the only underwear I've ever seen her in is either black or white.

Off to lunch, I'll check in in a couple of hours' time for all your good shopping tips.

S&M or M&S, that's the question...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn right.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

victorias secret online.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

you could try http://www.figleaves.com/uk/home.asp if you really are that shy. maybe http://www.agentprovocateur.com/homepage.php if you fancied something a little spicier. Or alternatively, most womens shops sell lingerie, so you could just go to any of their websites.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

you need to look at the underwear she already has - find out where she usually buys it, look at what it's made from - is it fancy, patterned, cotton, etc. Check out sizes - v. important. I think it would be perfectly acceptable to ask, if you haven't already.

Brands of underwear doesn't really matter, unless they matter to her. What's your budget? Obviously don't go for cheap or boring - M&S is probably a no-no, unless you go for the posh stuff. Again, look and see what she usually wears.

Go for sets, as it's the one thing women don't tend to buy for themselves. And make sure you get the right kind of pants - no point buying her the matching g-string if she won't go anywhere near it.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Where you go depends on what style you're looking for, your budget, and what size she is. Pink's on the mark with figleaves - and so long as you don't buy it too far in advance, if it doesn't fit or she doesn't like it, it's extremely easy to send it back.

The best choice in the centre of town will be in any of the department stores, but they tend to be very cluttered and very busy most of the time. There's a good shop out in Ealing - Bravissimo, which is very good for larger cup-sized bras. They're on-line too, will come back with the address.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Do gurlz like boyz in pantz even 10% as much as boyz like gurlz in pantz?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for all the excellent tips. I will certainly get her size.

I'm wondering is there some sort of balance to be struck when a man buys underwear for a woman? Sexy certainly, but then again not too much of a present to himself? Or is this not a worry at all? What do women here think?

logged off for the moment, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

My top 5 favourite girls in pants moments:

Kirsten Dunst jumping on the bed in Bring It On
Cameron Diaz dancing in Charlie's Angels
Scarlett Johanssen in Lost In Translation
all French films
Sigourney Weaver in Alien (not that sexy as such but a great scene anyway)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't even THINK about 'outrageously sexy' crap involving too-shiny satin. Also red&black+lace is bad.

Do gurlz like boyz in pantz even 10% as much as boyz like gurlz in pantz?

Well, boys out of pants make me giggle (sometimes for the right reason, sometimes, conversely, for the wrong) but boys in pants can be cute. I don't think it's quite as much of an issue as girls in pants seems to be for you girl-loving boys.

xpost Sigourney Weaver in fatigue boy-short pants and sweaty vest is HOTT AS HELL. Transparent knickers a la LIT are v obv but get the job done innit.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

what's with all this talk of sexy summer dresses and underwear on ILX? you are all giving me the horn. more than usual, that is.

I'm surprised you aren't swimming in a pool of naked, beautiful ladies after your controversial TB triumph. I was told this was the prize, hence my strop at losing so early.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

shhhh, that was only if a Brit won

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Re. the balance to be struck, seeing as she asked you for the present, why not ask her - does she want nice underwear to wear out and feel special or does she want stuff that will be probably confined to the bedroom, or if she wears it out she'll be suffering discomfort but for pleasure later?

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask Nick South4ll to google for crotchless p4nties.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe you could actually take her shopping. Obviously it's not as nice as opening a present, but you could choose together, no?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Agent Provocatuer, Agent Provocatuer. They make beautiful stuff and it comes in a ribbon tied box and I have to say the bra I have from there has caused my female friends to (drunkenly) comment on my breasts.

But Vicky is super-right about checking out the kind of stuff she has already. Do this, then buy a deluxe version.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I think you should go for something she can actually wear during the day but also since she asked you to buy her underwear (and you mentioned that she's a traditional black and white girl), you should feel free to go a little sexy. I wouldn't ask her another question about it. Just do your best and she'll love it. Yes, I am a man.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed. You must have some preferences yourself regarding the underwear she wears - buy her something in a style you know she'll wear, but in a shape/colour/material that you find particularly sexy.

Don't forget that she will also be aware that you bought underwear you found sexy, and will almost certainly make a special effort to let you benefit from your largesse :)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.ebay.com surely.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

now i have this image of this pair of underpants that roams through charity shops and ebay that's perpetually being bought as a present by boyfriends to their girlfriends who hates them then sells them to ebay/give to charity shops.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

If you want to pad it out a bit, the Paul Smith sale shop have very nice sheer vests and pants in black or pink for c. £13.50 for a set.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only ever been bought pants by girls and they've always been a bit on the small size. Maybe they didn't want to insult me by buying a larger size, or maybe my tallness is deceptive. I will hope for the latter.

http://www.redoute.co.uk has hideous crotchless knickers and those ones with (fake) pearls instead of a gusset. Their mens' pants are about as unsexy as I have ever seen.

(Vicky is wrong that girls never buy themselves matching sets btw - I always buy matching knickers when I get a new bra)

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

men's

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too madchen. I love to wear matching sets! unfortunately i have to buy mine from bravissimo, so they're always expensive!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It's probably just me being miserly, cos I find it very hard to justify £12 for a little bit of fabric.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah Vicky, I totally agree, but it's so nice to have matching sets!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I have bought two matching sets ever I think. And I can't actually remember the last time I bought knickers for myself, as my mum always gives me a drawerful for Xmas oh dear how sad. Bras though I would not trust with ANYONE.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Bras are a tricky one definitely. I wish i cuold just walk into shops like la senza, but they stock maybe 2 different bras in my size!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Pink, I have the same problem ('problem'?) I've looked at Bravissimo before, but am not sure about buying without trying - what's their return policy? I get mine from department stores and M&S has got a lot better lately. Bikinis are an expensive fucking nightmare.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh it's great Madchen. if you've worn it or even washed it, you can return them & they'll refund you. Obviously not like 6 months later, but you get the picture. I love it in there, it's all I wear now. It's so great being able to choose from every style!! Their bikinis are really nice too, although I haven't purchased one as yet.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

a call for girls to try and go out with boys with the same breast size.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

re. bravissimo and figleaves - I tend to order quite a few at a time, then I can try them all on and keep the ones that fit best, rather than trying on one or two at a time and potentially waiting an age before I find the perfect one. It does mean they take the money off the card, but it goes back on again once you send the ones you don't want back.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I will try it then.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

cool, make sure you report back with your choices madchen!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

added benefit obv. is that you don't have to go into a cramped cubicle that smells of sweaty feet to try them on, you do it in the comfort of your own home, and can try them on with lots of your favourite tops to make sure it looks good!

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

and I get to watch

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Do Bravissimo pay your travel expenses for this service?

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, no but you can order from their website!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

So, that's one bra, one pair of knickers and one voyeur. The perfect combo.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Report back with piXXorz plz k thx bye.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

re: My girlfriend asked me to buy her some underwear for her birthday...

buy something decent/ stylish, AND something kinky like crotchless red knickers. Wrap them up separately, hand her the gift parcel with the kinky knickers first - and see her reaction !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Bravissimo is on the same parade as Hippy Heaven and a computer games shop, I like that sorta balance.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I've ever gotten underwear as a gift, it seems kind of like a creepy present, but only in general; in this case she asked you! But since she asked you you might want to just go ahead and ask her what kind of underwear she is thinking of because if she meant cartoon summer fun panties and you come back with some sort of naughty french made cut-out crotch get up she might hurt you.

Or immediately fuck you. It is diffifcult to say.

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Thursday, 12 August 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i second anna on the AP front. most of their stuff is so so gorgeous, and not many girls will buy it for themselves. plus, you've got cute salesgirls dressed up like nurses. bonus for you.

really do think about what she normally wears. and red is rarely a good idea-- can look too trashy. black is usually good, as are pastels. notice if she wears a thong or not (loads of us just WILL NOT wear a thong)

if you can't afford AP, knickerbox on oxford street has some pretty nice stuff. actually, topshop's undies department is pretty fantastic as well.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

If you can't afford AP then M&S do their diffusion range. If you are feeling flush and want to bring her to the shop, check La Perla.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 12 August 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it seems kind of like a creepy present

God yeah. When I lived in Sydney, the company I worked for had Secret Santa (or Kris Kringle, as they oddly insisted on calling it) at Christmas and one of the young/chav/bogan/white nigga lads in the office bought one of the girls a barely-there lacy thong thing. She actually quit the company in the embarrassment and confusion that followed.

La Perla, La Senza and the aforementioned AP are all good. Avoid Primark and Madhouse. If in doubt, Top Shop vouchers innit!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it La Senza that don't have sizes in any conventional sense of the word?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone gave me a barely-there lacy thong type thing in an office Secret Santa thing two years ago. To this day I have never identified the culprit.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

La Senza had the same sizes as everywhere else, last time I looked. But their bigger bras were made of stretchy material and had overstretchy straps, which is no good.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it's La Perla then, or maybe I have imagined the whole thing in some bra reverie.

Someone gave me a barely-there lacy thong type thing in an office Secret Santa thing two years ago. To this day I have never identified the culprit.

I thought you were going to say: "To this day I have never worn it".

Well OK, but really I'm just intrigued by a shirt that's a work of genius.

it seems like the thing that's different about them is the sizing, not the way they actually look. if you're that curious, you can have a look at the website. that's what i did.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 14 August 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I have looked and it is clearly a work of genius.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

so are you home on a saturday night, looking at women's lingerie on the internet?

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

So... it's a fitted shirt with ribbing then?

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I have been out and come home, but yes. Thanks for the idea.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait - I thought I wasn't such a loser because it was after 1am (I know, this makes little sense) but the ILE datestamp is saying it's half an hour earlier. What time is it?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

12.21am where you are, according to my clocks. i'm sure you went out and did lots of fun stuff tonight, but that was just such an easy shot that i couldn't resist.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's 1.21am. We're on BST (GMT+1). The ILE timestamp for your post is 12:58am. Never mind.

I didn't really have fun. I caught up with a friend, which was nice, but the band was bloody awful.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Why aren't the models on the Bravissmo site as pretty as usual. Are they saying big-boobed women can't have nice faces? Actually I don't like the bras much either. All in all it's been a disappointing Saturday night.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i was very disappointed in the bras, myself. really blah. i'm about to go out, so i'll take over the saturday night mantle and try to turn things around.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 14 August 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the idea of Saturday night transatlantic tag team. Have fun.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, now I think I have no rational choice but to buy this little number for my special someone.

It's all about the subtlety. I love how he's pointing at it with both hands, as if it might not otherwise attract our attention.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 15 August 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

This one is more insouciant:

The perfect gift for Clarence Thomas!

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Sunday, 15 August 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually think it looks like an oversized microphone falling out of someone's glitzy evening bag.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 15 August 2004 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

You might be right about that. If only there were garment manufacturers out there that were sincerely dedicated to the art of creating true-to-life faux penises.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Sunday, 15 August 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Gwar. ALL I can think of now is Gwar.
