How would people feel about doing a Gmail muisc exchange tree?

'Cos I can't use slsk, here. And because I've loads of stuff that I think is awesome, and that I'd really love to send people, but I don't really have an excuse for doing so...

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Monday, 13 September 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(I guess the way I'm imagining it working isn't so much a tree as, like, people just sending out mp3s to the list with enticing descriptions whenever they feel like, for people to download or not as they choose).

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 13 September 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds good.

C J (C J), Monday, 13 September 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait - can you htmlize a link to a file stored in a gmail account? How's that work? Seems a bit odd.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 September 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get why one'd need to, really! I was imagining this working with boring old attachments - the "download or not as they choose" comes from it being all webmailish, so I don't see what'd be the problem. (I could be wrong about all of this obv.)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 13 September 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ohh! Of course. I'm overthinking things, I suspect :)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 September 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

One must keep in mind tho that you can only send 10mb at a time (ie per email) to a gmail account or it bounces it.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 September 2004 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i will

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I started a thread on ILM for this the other week - if people just list tracks they'd like to be sent or describe the kind of thing they'd like to hear then people can just mail them it.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem i'd like to hear your nates cdr challenge you fucker!

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

heh, but don't post it to my gmail addy ;)

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

you can send music files over AIM too.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 13 September 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz if you there's any particular tracks you wanna hear from that then mail me

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 13 September 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

we could set up a open-access gmail account - ie post the username and login details here and then everyone could use it, with the proviso that someone would delete tracks every week. not sure how many you could have in the inbox at one time..

Jay G (jaybob79), Monday, 13 September 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

jay G took the words out of my mouth.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 13 September 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i also have a spare gmail invite that i would be happy to use for this if people are up for it...

Jay G (jaybob79), Monday, 13 September 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

what should be the username?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 13 September 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

ilxmp3

stop calling cis gay you big meanie!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 13 September 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevem, where is the ilm thread?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I slightly prefer the idea of a mailing list to a free access inbox, 'cos then we could praise stuff and get mail and what's not to love about mail? People with less free time/more mail already might disagree though...

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

this sounds like a great id'er

dysøn (dyson), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(If anyone would like in but hasn't got gmail at the moment, I'm totally happy to send invites, incidentally).

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd be interested in doing this as a lurker...i'll probably very rarely have anything to contribute, but really enjoy getting new stuff to listen to. is that too greedy?

colette (a2lette), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Not at all! Like, as far as I understand it, it would take as much time to send the same attachment to 30 people as 10, so lurkers seem like a greatness to me.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm interested. is this the place to make requests?

who can send me annie's "the greatest hit" & "chewing gum" so I can whine about them?

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Jay G great idea.

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

www.yousendit.com allows you to upload a file up to 1GB in size and then gives you a link so that a certain (unspecified) number of people can download it.

Maybe you can use that, or not

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

So whats the verdict - one account we can all access, or something like this thread where people say "please send X someone?" and they get sent it? Or both? Either work for me. I too have loads of left over gmail invites...

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i am pretty useless at saying THIS IS WHAT I WANT. I quite like the original idea where someone says "hey: this is good" and then if you want it you can say "yes please" (although obv i have nothing against the idea of people asking for stuff)

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Kinda like Livejournal's Talkee Walkee?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm with gaz, here - I'd feel silly saying SEND ME X, BITCHES, plus I figure I'd miss out on a bunch of great stuff that I wouldn't know I liked until I heard it.

I like the idea of a shared account, too, it's neat. I'd still slightly prefer the original plan, because it might feel a bit more like a community - with one account it might feel like you were uploading stuff into a faceless void, and you couldn't really get an idea what stuff people were really digging. But I'm fine with whatever.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 13 September 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I am kinda worried this idea will slowly fall apart due to my ineffectual girly-man indecisive non-leadership and fade away despite loads of people thinking it's a pretty good idea.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 13 September 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm well how about this: we keep the thread alive by posting occasional lists saying "this week on the st3alz0r gmail account..." and then people go for it?

One drawback - wouldnt want to disseminate any pwds via posting them here I dont think, in case of g00glers etc?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 September 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ok hit me whatya got????

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 September 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe we should have some sort of poll? I'll check it in twenty-four hours, and do whatever gets the most votes...

OPTION A: Original plan - we make a list of adresses. To upload a song, one sends it as an attachment to a message sent to EVERYONE on the list, which could have a header format like "[stealzor] Who feelin' some MILLI VANILLI?" or something, to differentiate it from non-list messages. I like this because there could also be messages, also to this list, which didn't have songs at all, but praised other peoples', OR asked for specific things, so it kinda incorporates the request idea.

OPTION B: Shared Gmail Account - wouldn't clutter up our inboxes, or fill up our space. Also simpler to adminster maybe? But we'd need to keep this thread up in tandem. I kinda suspect this might die away a bit quicker too?

OPTION C: We just keep this thread alive, and ask for specific things/ cool things people reckon we might like.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am votin' A, but I'm totally happy to administer B or C if people want me too, 'cos like hey, FREE MUSIC... (Um not that C takes administering)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I like a combo of A and C, myself.

I might just start things off by asking if anyone has a copy of "Stuart" by the Dead Milkmen and if so can they send it to trayce -at- gmail.com

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Just what we need, more polls. ; )

I don't really have an opinion on the options though, so I'll shut up.

But first! s1sk has been lame for downloading recently, so can someone hook me up with the Cocteau Twins' "Summerhead" and Mira Calix's Pin Skeeling EP?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Option B cuz then you don't have to worry about having your inbox fill up with mp3s while you're on vacation or in rehab or whatever.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

howzabout like a list of addys developed here and then used as a kind of mailing list for requests/offers offboard.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I can send you the Cocteaus song Lee! I just have to get it off my CD from home first (ie later tonite).

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Rah!

This is option C in action.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Email my gmail account as a reminder coz otherwise knowing me, I'll forget :(

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I assume not to the spamspanker -- what is your real one?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oh whoops. trayce at gmail, or trace (no y) at connect.net.au

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm for A. the point of gmail accounts is they don't get full innit ;)

(i have a stack of invites too, if anyone else wants to play)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone just sent me a frankly incredible Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal through Gmail. It's a wonderful thing, isn't it?

(My Gmail account is 20% full already, incidentally)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

oi send me stuff you bastard

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

OptionA, ta.

My Gmail: MattyBalaam@Gmail.com

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

mine is 2% full! send me shit too! (but not whatever it was Matt was talking of...some kind of goal?)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

If people vote for A, it is always possible to also set up a public gmail account for option B too. which might be the best of both worlds. (so people who don't want their gmail filled up real quick can just check the public gmail box which is part of the email list?)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt, could you send me that goal? It sounds like aceness.

Ken's idea is clever.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

We should generate a website listing our own personal MP3 collections and a contact email then people can request from that list.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve/Gravel I've sent something to you.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh i've wanted something like that for a long time now - if there was a script that could list your collection online automatically that'd be great (maybe working on same principles as p2p clients somehow)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

That goal! I like how the first dangle even fools the cameraman.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Carsmile, could you chuck one of those gmail invites my way?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

S - how about this?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd be up for that but then be aware that now i probably am inclined to only send lady sovereign and deus tracks.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

that could be useful Greg, i can list all my mp3 files and paste as txt using Powerdesk also - but would it be able to auto-update?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Could someone send me that goal too please? TVMIA

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Dyson/Leeee - I have sent you both the Cocteaus song :)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

can i have it as well? i want anything good!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, everybody feel free to send me anything they think I'd like. Especially a goal with a conspicuous amount of fannydangle.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve: sure! Does that degoogled gmail work?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(er, if you meant me I mean)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit I wish I wasnt on dialup at home :(

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

If people vote for A, it is always possible to also set up a public gmail account for option B too. which might be the best of both worlds. (so people who don't want their gmail filled up real quick can just check the public gmail box which is part of the email list?)

Actually, does anyone have any objections to this? It seems pretty perfect - option A'ers would get their list, option B'ers would get their unclutter, and C people could just use this thread and/or Stevem's...

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i think that's the best option. i'd be up for option A for a while (my email address here is right when you use gmail, obviously), and then see how it goes.

ooh, i'm excited!

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

OK! I'll set up the B account when I get home tonight!

People for A:

Trayce
Gaz
Colette
Stevie N
Chewshabadoo
Carsmile
Aldo?
C J? (address?)
Dyson? (address?)

Any more?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

is sending that info on this thread a wise idea? (given the googlability of ilx.com) and the existence of R14A and stuff

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm up for A (will mail you offlist, having taken ken's post into consideration).

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm in!
rob.bolton@ you know the rest

(i'm not afriad of The Man - we'll all go down together!! plus they have more to worry about than us emailing each other a few songs here and there...)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

method A seems a bit unwieldy doesn't it? if several people are going to be e-mailing mp3s to everyone on the list every day, which i presume will be the case?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

hello!

lukasb @ g mail

(although I agree with stevem, which I why I voted for option B)

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

seeing as no-one has set up option B yet tho, i probably will...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't g say he would tonight?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to be in!

This might be useful for refreshing people on lots of those tracks on that there 90s poll which Soulseek-less people might have loved at the time but never got round to possessing. Like for example the Trick Daddy/Trina one. And the Aaliyah ones. Etc.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevem - option B is getting set up in, like, an hour! Hold yr horses, y'all.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

method A seems a bit unwieldy doesn't it? if several people are going to be e-mailing mp3s to everyone on the list every day, which i presume will be the case?

This is exactly why Ken's idea is so good - that the option B account be *on the list*. (ie just checking the public-access B account will give you total access to everything ever posted on the A list)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry! should have caught up on the whole thread. gravel, please ignore me, I will be a B.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Coolio - anyone else who's signed but would rather B (I am dead proud of that), now would be a good time to say.

Barima, I don't have yr mail yet :(

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

actually I'd like to be a B as well for the moment, but hopefully I'll get home internet access back soon - would it be possible to become an A then?

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm home now and WHEELS ARE IN MOSHUN, so it's probably best for anyone who wants to join A to e-mail me from hereon out...

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

OKAY!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The public access account 'stealzor' should now be up. As an anti-g00gler measure, the password is 'what might one not feel like doing, with a hat' (7). Also, anyone on the mailing list should now have received a message, so let me know if you haven't...

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Barima, I'll add you as soon as I get your gmail; Michael B, can you tell me yours?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

God. I am very stupid and can't work out the password. Can someone cleverer than I email it to me please?

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool, I just logged in and it looks fine. I'll be uploading some Isis tonight...

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Lex - it's the four word meme that starts with a naughty word.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

nope, still don't get it. This is very embarrassing.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

s k i p l e v e l s @ g m a i l . c o m

I have no slsk this end either but am trying to make a compilation cd of my dad's favourite songs fr his birthday (they're all really obv. ones). if I ws to list them and you (ilxers!!!) had them, wd you send me the ones you have? I'll list them anyway, for the kind.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Its what you do to your clothes every so often. Jaysys.

I have just sent the first MP3. This is a momentous occasion!

WARNING - It is Estonian pop-metal with girls rapping badly. You will probably think its rub but it seemed a suitably silly place to begin.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

oh GP sent me the password in the end, I am useless and still don't get it but oh well.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

the list of mp3s to send, me:

'ticket to ride'
'the most beautiful girl in the world' (??) (sample lyric: 'say, did you happen to see the most... today?')
'shangaland' (??) (the bay city rollers, I think)
'crazy' (patsy cline)
'american pie' (don something?)
'the wonder of you' (elvis)
'suspicious minds' (elvis)
my dad's favourite elvis costello track
'tainted love'
'walking on the moon' (sting? the police?)
'all my loving'

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

this is a crass example of option C!

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt, it worked! The first five seconds are TATU BUBBLEGUM METAL MADNESS.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(although it's kinda odd sending it just to stealxor - I imagine people on the list won't be checking SZ so much, 'cos they'll think they have it all their inboxes anyway? I guess listees should try and send stuff to everyone (including SZ obv...)? But like do as y'all please from hereon, it's all yours.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

How else should c0zen have requested stuff? Or was that a joke?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no! Cozen's request is in just the right place - I meant MDC's mp3.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Should I send it to everyone? I wasn't sure how well that would be received...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

look, we're onto me now.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought everyone on the mailing list had agreed in signing up to receive all the mp3s? (That's why the enticing descriptions, 'cos the joy of webmail = not having to DOWNLOAD them all). O, I dunno.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

plus also gmail is like 1GB - so 4mb mp3 file, which is easily deletable (haha), isn't too much to cause concern?

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

If people feel like they've been tricked we could have the list just for discussion, but like this thread is fine for that.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought that I could just check in to see what songs were available at stealzor. That way, I can pick and choose which ones I want. I really don't need everyone on this list sending me eight mp3's, no offense.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, I didn't read the whole thread. Its gone to everyone on the list now just to see how Gmail handles sending an MP3 out to loads of people.

I think just logging in to see what's up is my preferred option, but I'm not hugely arsed either way.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything posted to the list will be also posted to stealzor, which is itself on the list. The list is a seperate thing - you should be on it if you find the idea of receiving many mp3-filled emails in your normal inbox appealing, and not otherwise.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're on the list because you thought it was the only way to get the mp3s, but would prefer to use stealzor now you know it's available, tell me now, and we'll get you off it...

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(Cheers Matt! That seems to have worked well)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

NANCY SINATRA AND VITALIC AHOY

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My address is cj2004 at gmail

Please add me to the list!!

C J (C J), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

List "A", that is.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Have a file.

(I seem to recall it being discussed at one point on ILM, plus I want to see how gmail works for sending)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha this Sk8er Boi mix is fantastic.

This is much better than watching Arsenal in the Champions League.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

pop me on. williambswygart being the in-tray.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha we've BROKEN Gmail.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

This will really come into its own the next time everyone on ILM decides to get into a froth of excitement over something.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

they have really ruined annie for me, you know.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it was me trying to bail off of the list! Sorry.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf is the password now? is this somekind of british thing?

artdamages (artdamages), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I have decided that I'd like to B, since it might get too hectic in the "send this to me" xpost frenzy. As for the password, couldn't someone just CC everyone who's signed up for B?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Do we know what is likely to happen if several different people all try and log into the same Gmail account at once?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I would do A if there is a clean interface, instead of willy nilly yelling on this thread.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt - the answer is seemingly that g-mail crashes. For everyone. On the internet. I'm pretty sure it's already happened with Vanilla Ninja, so either we're fine or GOOGLE COPS are circulating as we speak. Either way, things seem to be workingish.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah gmail seems really sluggish right now, haha did we kill it? :D

Anwyay, I've downloaded the nobukazu takemura track which looks good. I'm happy to stay on the list for now, as I'd never think to log into a seperate account anyway.

One thing probably worth noting to anyone sending a choon: cut and paste the address list into a NEW message if you can, rather than replying to an existing one, because the way gmail works, it threads messages into stupid discussions so at a glance, some songs might not be obvious if theyre buried 3 replies down in a thread, if that makes sense.

K? K :)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

K.

wez me orbital track trayce?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

SHITE I fergot to rip it. I think someone else at work has ripping s/w tho. Which Orbital trak were you after again?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

you said it was a diff mix of halcyon i think??

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah thats right. I'll see if anyone at work can rip to mp3, and send it yer way if so, otherwise I'll do it tonite.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

someone put me on the a-list.

artdamages (artdamages), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm down for this: andrewdg@gmail.com

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

How do I get a copy of the email list? I have a whole bunch of stuff I can send out to anyone who wants it. (click for list)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I also can't figure out the stealzor password. :( Somebody help me out here.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

its fuck [something] a hat. its the "something".

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently anyway.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

its yaknow, what you probably wouldn't do with a hat. i thought it was ironing but its not. like fuck ironing a hat.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

There are a million things I wouldn't do with a hat...

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(ie I still don't understand - Trayce just IM me!!)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

hey andrew how that sub oslo disc?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It's fucking great, you want a sample?

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

This Vanilla Ninja shit is off the hizzle.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure what I'm in, but I want to be in. Email address as above.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yes pls Andrew

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck it, I'm going to send the whole thing to stealzor. I'm going to RAR it (using WinRAR) so that it's split up into 10mb chunks (only one of the tracks is <10mb)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You know what, I want to be cool too. Put me on A.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

do i need RAR to piece it back together?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(It's taking it's sweet fucking time... I'm sending parts 1 and 2 (of 9) simultaneously.)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My wishlist, judging by my s1sk Q:

Woob - 1194 (don't need "dooshta" or "odonna")
And my plea for Mira Calix EPs (excluding Prickle) still stands.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Make sure whatever you send is 10mb with email headers and etc, with the gmail limit... I sent a 9mb file once and it failed.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sending files of exactly 10,000,000 bytes and the first couple have gone through without problems.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If I may make a proposal: in the stealzor account we should 'Star' all messages that contain successful mp3 uploads. Multi-part posts (like my Sub Oslo one) should only be starred once all the parts have appeared. This will make it much easier to avoid confusion when things get a bit messy.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

(it also means that upon logging into the account you can just click the 'Starred' tab to see a lovely list of music fresh for the downloadin')

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Why aren't you people as enthusiastic about this as I am? Damn it! :-)

gaz: I've fully sent that Sub Oslo album to stealzor, if you still want it.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm excited (figured out the password), but i don't know what i might contribute.

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Pick a couple of choice tracks from your mp3 collection and send 'em in! I'm so fucking excited about this shit, probably because I just had two sugary donuts and an espresso.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

haha...Andrew this has spurred in me fiendish ideas to get broadband. i'm gonna get that suboslo as soon as i can wangle it! thanks.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, nice.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i just realized most of my tracks are aacs, but i'll find some mp3s

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

As long as they're not iTunes Store-style encrypted AAC's, I'm happy to take 'em.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I've just sent a file to stealzor, mainly because IT'S COMPLETELY NSFW. (Warned enough?)

This is for two reasons:

1) It's full of bad language and is mildly racist in parts.
2) It features the out-takes as a 'tired and emotional' Tom Baker tries to record an advert for furniture polish, and is frequently very, very funny. You'd spray coffee over your monitor.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Add I to A - I'm sure you can figure out the addy.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 06:09 (twenty-one years ago)

What does 'off the hizzle' mean?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

so how does this work. say i'm in groupB and i want to effectively upload something. can i just email it from groupB to groupB?

and can i suggest we put a limit on uploads per person per day? say 2 - i'm uncomfortable with people uploading whole lps for one thing and think g00gle will come down on us like a ton of bricks if they find out (and, as, i keep pointing out, the law has changed on this recently, it's no longer a civil thing, it's a legal thing).

and delete everything after a week?

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got nothing against uploading whole LP's... I don't know if Google will really crack it at us, considering what a pittance this account will look like alongside all the rest of Google's traffic. But then, who knows how closely they're monitoring it?

I suggest that we only delete stuff when we're at about 800mb. Maybe we could set that limit a bit lower, and keep only ~200mb of stuff in the account at any one time just to remain inconspicuous. I suppose the most conservative policy will rule in the end, because once stuff's deleted there's no bringing it back.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 07:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose the 'safest' way of using this is just logging in as stealzor and sending messages to yourself. That's what I'll be doing from now on, anyway.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

> once stuff's deleted there's no bringing it back

well, apart from the 20 copies that went to everyone else. gmail, the world's distributed backup system 8)

i've also just been sending mails from stealzor to stealzor, i figure all the others will check in from time to time anyway.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I reckon the ideal way of running things is to have everyone logging into stealzor whenever they need a fix. Sending out massive attachments to tens-to-hundreds of gmail users is a surefire way of attracting attention.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

at a gig of storage stealzor could host, what, 100 albums worth?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

just sent Thomas Bangalter's 'Extra Dry' altho really it's not that great and i wish i'd mailed 'Ventura' instead (but that's longer)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

also Andrew otm, it just seems too chaotic and bandwidth-swamping

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Outrage is pretty great - really scuzzy and minimal with these big menacing strings that come in near the end. Totally not what I was expecting from Bangalter.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ok i am an idiot i gb = maybe 10 albums?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

That's more like it gaz :)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

make it 20

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Rah - I'm pretty happy with how this is working out! Stealzor is cluttered with albums and goodness, the list is a nice quiet way to get recommended music, everyone seems to have what they want.

I'll update the list tonight - once again, can anyone who's only on it because they couldn't find the SZ password just mail me, and I'll give you that.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

and remember to let people who opted out of option A know about whatever good stuff is being mailed around to everyone else

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Shall we say that there's a rough cap of five-or-so mp3s a day, total, as in from-everyone-put-togethor, on the list? That seems a good solid chunky amount of music for anyone to get free, and it seems safer, since the list is much higher-google-notice than SZ.

x-post: yeah, if people get really excited about stuff they can revive this thread, and then the stealzor hordes can descend (as SZ is on the list, it'll automatically be there).

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

jackuzi@gmail.com

Michael B, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

oh ok cool!

xpost

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ok now what do i need to do to send music?

Michael B, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

reply to an email an attach your file.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I would love to join the fun but I can't figure the password. :-( If someone wants to e-mail me it, then thank you. This is my real e-mail below!

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

the stealzor so far...

Vanilla Ninja - Liar
Nobukazu Takemura - Mahou No Hiroba
Nancy Sinatra - Babys
Sub Oslo - The Rites Of Dub (ALBUM)
DJ Krush - Trihedron
Saloon - Bicycle Thieves
Autechre - Lost
Autechre - Flutter
Polarbear - Safety
Autechre - Weisssensee
Indian Summer - In Town
The Go Team - Huddle Information
Thomas Bangalter - Extra Dry
International Jazz Day - Recurring

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I propose that perhaps we turn the A-list into something of a 'stealzor digest'. ie, they will get mailed two or three choice mp3s every day from the stealzor account. (let's say 20mb-worth, ie two emails?)

As for choosing the mp3s and who performs it, perhaps we should use this thread for nominations?

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

THIS THING DESERVES MORE ATTENTION

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

that's an lp's worth already today. what do you want, blood? 8)

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, that 'In Town' song is actually by Fancey - I think I confused matters with the mail header.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

do you know any more IJD tracks Jerry?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hanna, I've mailed you.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I propose that perhaps we turn the A-list into something of a 'stealzor digest'. ie, they will get mailed two or three choice mp3s every day from the stealzor account. (let's say 20mb-worth, ie two emails?)

Won't this take an awful lot of adminsistering when things quieten down to one or two uploads a day? I don't really have a problem with things as they are - the list seems a nice way of getting songs in your inbox, and gives a nice feeling of Things Not Disappearing Into A Void when you send it out.

Problems with it I can see:

i) security
and
ii) the current joining/leaving system is horrible, I basically have to send out an email to everyone each time the list changes (this why new people like N and leeee won't have been added yet, 'cos I only wanna do this once a day. Maybe we should an automated service? But then g00glersfret...

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That comes accross like I'm being all "WELL THINGS ARE FINE AREN'T THEY" which isn't at all how I mean, I'm really up for making this the neatest thing we can, so yay suggestions yay. I didn't mean to sound snappy.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

What would people like a list to do?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"LOCKDOWN IN SECTOR FOUR"

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"unusual usage"

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

wow! didn't take long!

the stealzor account has been shut down for 24 hours.

so clearly this approach will not work if everyone has access. i set up an account to share files with some friends and that seems okay so it seems accounts with smaller ratio of users is the way forward. perhaps we could do it by genre, as everyone has different preferences...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

very strange considering there were only what 20 files on there? (meaning we would probably have ended up with 100 or so a week). maybe 'too many people logging in to same account' was the problem?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't even get into my mail now!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe it's all the mp3s

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i know this sounds more complicated, and it's only just popped into my head, but why not run this like an actual phone tree? where we each have 3 or 4 people we email, who each email 3 or 4 people, and that way it's just a few people sending a few songs to friends. and also, that way if someone goes on holiday or whatever, they can just tell their sender to hold off for a few days or soemthing.

does this sound like too much work?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i doubt it is the mp3s but if so then the simple solution is to change the file extensions (to .txt for example) or zip the files before mailing

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm almost sure it'd be the number of login locations reaching some or another limit/rate.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

that's probably it. maybe the fact that more than 1 person at a time may've been logged in too.

dysøn (dyson), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think having one or two admins - Greg? Andrew? And sending out a handful of MP3s a day to everyone on the list would be the most manageable way.

By a handful I mean 2-4 really. I don't think its necessarily going to work for sending out whole albums.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

And the rest of us could still send MP3s to Stealzor for distribution amongst the others. Or to individual users if requested...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the office is all lookng at me because i keep laughing at tom baker.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Eye thang ewe.

But I did warn you not to play it at work.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Gravel, I mailed you, but now I'm confused as to what I'm supposed to be signing up for.

only thing that would make sense is multiple login/access from different ISPs

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

just in case you still you have trouble getting back into your normal account after stealzor has been locked out.. you can fix the problem by deleting cookies on your computer and try gmail again.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I CAN'T BELIEVE THE LEX COULDN'T WORK OUT THE PASSWORD

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Right. Um. Well, that was fun while it lasted.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

(Can people not use SZ for the next few days, please? I suspect if this happens again there may be Consequences, and it's very tracable back to me (source of invite, first login etc), so I'd appreciate it if we could lick our wounds and work out where we stand now)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(I still don't GET the password Barima)

So it's all aboard plan A then? If that's still going to be happening I'll set up a new gmail account for that list tomorrow... I briefly logged in to Stealzor (but didn't download damnit!) and there was loads of stuff in it, probably too much to put my normal email address on the list.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

there was only about 20 files. i'm sure plenty of gmail accounts house a great deal more than that.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I meant in terms of 20 emails in one day burying my normal email.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(Incidentally, if anyone wants to help hash things out now we are back to the drawing board-ish, a good way might be to AIM me? 'alizeesque') (especially if you know anything about php/mailing list admin)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps a single HTML/txt database of our collection hosted at some free hosting site, artist/title/whatnot, and who has it. Plus, a separate (non-online? downloadable?) directory of names + emails so that things cannae get harvested.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

How would people feel about a private newsgroup server?

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Now we're talking.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(not that I would know anything about one)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea how newsgroups work. Please don't tell me because I don't live in 1996 anymore.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew i was just about to suggest this!

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Let me see what I can do.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe use the stealzor list rather than here to advertise this??????

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This sounds like an awesome idea to me...

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(I think one might wanna wait till the dust settles before doing any more bulk-mailing? Here is kinda the established place for wrangling out mp3-sharin'-diddies)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Count me in on things as they happen plz (work is going to be very busy over the next few days and I suspect my ILXing will become appropriately sporadic).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I'd be up for that for sure. I was a little worried we'd land in some shit using gmail this way and we have :( Pity but o well.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(up for the newsgroup I mean)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure that I'd be able to get an ilx newsgroup -- the school news server seems to be pretty selective about what groups it carries.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm talkin about a private news server. It wouldn't be syndicated throughout mainstream usenet.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeh, which usually means you can get to it as long as you know the addy - plug it into yr newsreader and bingo. Some people I knew used to run a design discussion news server with a couple groups on it.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ohhhh! Revoke my technogeek status, pls.

Sounds good to me, btw!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

My only concern is that this endeavor will lack the geemail cachet.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

gmail has cachet?

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh darnit, am I 3 months behind again?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 16 September 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey all, I have been sitting on the sidelines so far, but I am interested in participating in whatever you guys come up with in the end.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 September 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay I've emailed some news server details to a whole bunch of you. If you don't receive em in the next 10 mins, send me an email (on my address below).

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 16 September 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe this isn't the thread for it any more but I really liked the two songs Jerry The Nipper sent out yesterday.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 16 September 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks a bunch for doing this, Andrew!

(Right now I'm failing to find any groups on the server - this is me being a retard, right?)

I really like that Go! Team track as well.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

No, wait, ignore that, I'm a retard.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(Stevie's song is still great though)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, could I be e-mailed the details? dymaxia-at-ripco-com. Thanks!

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Could I be e-mailed the details too?

(I'm a lurker who's been on vacation and I just saw this.)

alexandra s (alexandra s), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew, should I mail the newsgroup details to the list?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Gravel, do you still have a spare invite? I'm a frequent lurker / infrequent poster (mostly on ILM) and I could really use it. My e-mail is susan_van_pelt (at) yahoo.com. Thank you.

snazz, Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I would also participate in mp3 sharing, for sure.

snazz, Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Invite sent!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Apologies for anyone waiting for List Things To Happen - it's kind of in suspension, waiting to find its place in a new newsgroupy world. It'll re-emerge when a good use shows up, probably.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand any of this talk of news servers and news groups :(

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Got the invite, Gravel. Much appreciated.

snazz, Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

andrew i never got an email!!

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 16 September 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew, should I mail the newsgroup details to the list?

I'll probably do this before going to bed, unless explicitly told otherwise.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll probably do this before going to bed, unless explicitly told otherwise.

I hope you did this, if not let me know and I'll send out emails. Sorry, gaz, I didn't see the spamproofing on your email address. I'll send now.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 17 September 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Have now! I go to bed pretty late.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 17 September 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

someone recommend me some newreader software

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

freeagent seems to be the weapon of choice (windows anyway).

koogs (koogs), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks! now i just have to covince my boss that a standalone broadband connection is essential to my work!

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

um, i've since downloaded freeagent myself and don't like it. that's 4 i've tried now... thunderbird, OE, pan, freeagent (oh, and pine). maybe i'm just too fussy 8)

koogs (koogs), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i also get the feeling that plan A is happily trotting along oblivious to use plan D people (and we're blissfully unaware of them). can anyone act as a bridge between the two, somehow?

koogs (koogs), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

stealzor gmail account working fine again now...

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

what i really want is just a passworded server in which individuals can upload to their own folder and i can use ftp to grab that shit.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevem, repost from earlier:

(Can people not use SZ for the next few days, please? I suspect if this happens again there may be Consequences, and it's very tracable back to me (source of invite, first login etc), so I'd appreciate it if we could lick our wounds and work out where we stand now)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i've seen someone with a decent web-based interface to this stuff, works nicely (and isn't the heaving free-for-all you'd expect because it's subscriber only). there's a mechanism for requests and one for uploading and a nice comments box for, er, comments. and everything gets deleted after a specified time.

it's php but i'm not sure whether the bloke wrote it himself or donwloaded it from somewhere.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, I've changed the stealzor password, because people seem to keep logging into it. We have a newsgroup now! It is very exciting.

(Send an e-mail to someone relevant if you want in - most everyone whose e-mail is on this thread should have an invite already)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

newsgroups suck

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

koogs maybe you would like xnews?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I love it - it's working great for me.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i've decided on outlook (to my shame - thunderbird asks you for a username and password FOR EACH NEWSGROUP which is whack. it also seems to download attachments twice, one when you open the message, again when you save attachment. or does it?).

splitting the descriptions from the actual files has made things a lot easier.

all we need now is for people to post things...

koogs (koogs), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Count me in, too, if it's not too late (haven't read this whole thread.)

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

How do I get on this?

mcd (mcd), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Plan A still happening then? I don't understand what a news server is or how I get on one, but if A is still in effect then I would like to sign up to it - not the address below but lexusjeep (at) gmail dot com. Cheers!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 17 September 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Lex, do you have Outlook Express? If not, you could download a newsreader, but I'm not familiar with any of the other ones, so maybe someone else can help you.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah I don't have Outlook Express at the moment and don't know when I will again. I'll bow out of this 'til my own computer gets hooked back up to the internet then...

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 18 September 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Lex, maybe this will help you when you get set up on your own:

newsreaders.com

Kerry (dymaxia), Sunday, 19 September 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I didn't read the whole thread and couldn't work out why I couldn't log into the fake public gmail account.

For anyone who wants in, I have six invites for gmail. Can I be involved in some way please? ai1sa.wats0n@gmai1.c0m (ungoogleproofed though, obviously),

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 19 September 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone explain in layman's terms how to connect to the newsgroup in Outlook Express? Thanks.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 September 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt:

Go to the "Tools" menu, click "Accounts", then click on the "News" tab. "Add" the account. The server name goes in the "News (nntp) server": line

Kerry (dymaxia), Sunday, 19 September 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
Is st341z0r effectively kaput?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't been back i must admit :(

bulbs (bulbs), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I still believe.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

A result, of still believing: http://riters.com/stealzor/index.cgi/FrontPage

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

er, how does that work?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(this is for Plan A. subscriptions and unsubscriptions can be done by editing the page, I think)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree that A and B is better, but we can't have B, google seem cunning.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

When people feel like it, I guess they can just send music to everyone who's indicated that they like free music?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I realise this is far from ideal, I've just been having serious slsk withdrawal lately, grah.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

what i would like best is an actual site divided into sections as follows:

Column A: material requested, followed by no. of requesters and their (googleproof) addresses)...you click an 'add me' link to have your email added to the list of requesters. when you receive the material you click a 'remove me' link (otherwise you might receive it several times).

Column B: material offered, followed by offerer's details

Column C: where you add/edit/remove your requests

combined with a CDR/DVD swap page, this MUST happen...

anyone got mad enough PHP skillz to want to make this with me? or give me a couple of months and i might be able to create it all by myself but no promises...

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd like to get involved in this newsgroup situation if possible...
my email adress isn't the one below, its the same without the _ (ie my name is all one word) and its at gmail...
could someone email me details if they get a chance?

robin (robin), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there really only two people interested? I guess that explains why the newsgroup is so quiet. I will e-mail you, robin.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I've set up my newseader to automatically download the headers from Stealzor, but as there doesn't seem to be much activity, and my newsreader only reads (BNR - which I use for it's ability to combine more than one newsfead) I haven't felt compelled to upload. If there was more evidence of people using it I would, because it is a really good idea.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I still check it every other day, just in case, though not necessarily downloading because I've already got the stuff being uploaded. (Thanks koogs anyway!)

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I was away on a couple trips and missed all the hoo-ha about the newsgroup, G00gle's cunning ways, etc...

However I have songs I want to share, and will add myself to the list again. Although I'm soon about to go offline for age

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(oops! let's continue...)

um, I'm going offline for a while starting in December, so I'll only be able to join in the party until then...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"offline forage" i.e. actually going to record shops

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the newsgroup is actually a perfect system - plausibly this should be a "use the newsgroup! it is ace!" thread instead.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I may be of some help providing u p l o a d tracks, if someone would like to email the details to radiofreealbemuth@g m a i l.con
