It's a damned lie pushed by the "research" giants who also happen to be the agra-fruit giants. Blame it on ADM. Supermarket to the world indeed. More like fruit-pusher to the world.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ON that note, why is fresh food good for you at all? It seems so full of microorganisms and dirt. Twinkie seem healthier.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey everyone ! I just discoverd something quite good! Sugar free apple sauce on waffles just tastes fine! hooray!

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I, however, aim for more than just *fine*.

Sean, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh try it sean! Try it ytri it! you'll see!

Sperm specifically use fructose (fruit sugar) as their energy source; a high level of fructose in the semen is an indication of virility. However, sucrose (table sugar) is immediately converted to fructose when it is metabolized. Both types of sugar will be stored as fat if they are not needed. It's all explained in this chart. So there's really no difference. But fruits contain other things such as antioxidants that will keep you from getting wrinkles and cancer and keep your DNA from becoming damaged. Microorganisms and dirt are good for the immune system.

Refined sugar = better educated sugar.

ice cr?m, Sunday, 9 August 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

i've been getting a bucket of peaches every week and eating them all. not sure if it's a 1/4 peck or 1/2 peck but i counted last week and there were 9 peaches. mangos have been on sale for like 2 months so i eat like 5 of those every week. and i try to eat a banana every day but sometimes i don't. so like 5 bananas a week. i also eat 1 cantaloupe per week and this week i got a small watermelon and a bag of grapes. i rarely drink juice though.

heavin' flho (s1ocki), Sunday, 9 August 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)

miracle fruit

What are these like, fresh? I've only had the dried powdered tablets (then of course drank straight lime juice)

I ate too many fresh figs earlier in the week. But they were so good.

handmaid of the demon bean (Jaq), Sunday, 9 August 2009 17:21 (sixteen years ago)

fresh or frozen they're way better

heavin' flho (s1ocki), Sunday, 9 August 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

Has anyone tried those white cherries? They keep tempting me but I always stick with the reliable blood-red cherries in end.

I can't find a peach that doesn't look misshapen. I've been eating cantaloupe (it finally tastes good to me, not just tasteless and full of water), watermelon, mango, grapes, cherries, blueberries, bananas, and avacado (I think that's a fruit, right?).

Virginia Plain, Sunday, 9 August 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't seen white cherries, but the rainiers are yellow with a pink blush and so so so sweet and good.

handmaid of the demon bean (Jaq), Sunday, 9 August 2009 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

I think that's them--I'll have to try them. Maybe I'll mix the two together.

Montmorency? Fresh tart cherries are difficult to find, I think.

I've had some meh rainiers - they can get mushy and flavorless. When you buy them, look for ones where the stems are still green and flexible.

permanent response lopp (harbl), Monday, 10 August 2009 00:09 (sixteen years ago)

o wait look: Without fumigation or irradiation as fresh fruit, mangosteens have historically been illegal for importation in commercial volumes into the United States due to fears that they harbor the Asian fruit fly, which would endanger U.S. crops. This situation, however, officially changed on July 23, 2007 when irradiated imports from Thailand were allowed upon USDA approval of irradiation, packing and shipping techniques.

the thing i worry about is that fruit is high in carbs and i am trying to keep a certain percentage of calories from carbs/protein/fat in my diet and the fruit thing kind of way upppps the carbs.

jaq, where do you go blackberry picking? blackberries are my #1 favorite of berries.

tehresa, Monday, 10 August 2009 00:16 (sixteen years ago)

they have mangosteens at a store here. maybe i will go buy one.

going to Discovery Park, probably on Saturday - want to come with? Magnuson Park is also good and I think jergins knows other good spots. There's a greenbelt on the Denny Blaine/Madrona ridge that has been good in the past, but I haven't been there in a few years.

handmaid of the demon bean (Jaq), Monday, 10 August 2009 00:21 (sixteen years ago)

maybe!

yesterday i had salmonberries on my hiking trail. pretty awesome! sour and tangy but still sweet, but i liked it better than a raspberry.

tehresa, Monday, 10 August 2009 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

ice cr?m no I live in the US, I confess that I've only ever had them in Asia as well, but I figured those crafty traders in Chinatown probably figured out a way to get them in

one cool thing about mangosteens: flip them over and they will have a little star-squiggle on the bottom, however many arms the star-squiggle has is however many slices will be inside. small mangosteens/large # of arms means a delicious mangosteen since there probably won't be too many seeds!

The worst thing to do with fruit is have those giant vats of fresh juice from a juice stand - if you think about it, you're drinking the equivalent of 3 organges and a banana, etc, they're such concentrated calorie bombs. Healthy at least, though.

tehresa, Monday, 10 August 2009 03:26 (sixteen years ago)

i would distress less if i hadn't gained like 30 pounds in the last year (and i wasn't skinny to start with)

where we turn sweet dreams into remarkable realities (just1n3), Monday, 10 August 2009 03:31 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i mean fruit is great i love it, i'm just in a place of being more aware of what i'm eating and its contribution to my consumed protein/fat/carbs every day. fruit's great, but if you are eating like 500 cals of it a day in addition to the other things you think of as carbs that you eat every day, you're gonna be super carb-heavy. not doing any atkins shit or anything, just being aware. and of course, everyone has a different metabolism and processes things differently. mine is super slow but i'm trying to reboot it (if that is the right term?). but now i am aware that the cup of grapes i ate earlier had more carbs than the piece of bread i ate at breakfast, so if anything, it makes me feel less guilty about that piece of bread!

tehresa, Monday, 10 August 2009 03:41 (sixteen years ago)

nb this has also made me feel SUPER guilty about the alcohol i've consumed and inspired me to consume less which is ;_;

tehresa, Monday, 10 August 2009 03:42 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i was thinking about this because *someone* admonished me about eating bananas because of their sugar content. but if i don't eat bananas i will be missing what's in bananas other than sugar, and i also eat fruit probably as a replacement for other stuff i seem to have stopped eating without even thinking about it. like bread and pasta. also i never really drink alcohol anymore. maybe i should pay attention but i can't decide.

permanent response lopp (harbl), Monday, 10 August 2009 03:47 (sixteen years ago)

the flip side is that a lot of times i realized i haven't eaten enough calories in a day and think 'well that means i can just have several drinks and it will be fine!' but that is not really a good idea.

tehresa, Monday, 10 August 2009 03:59 (sixteen years ago)

Glad these threads (this and the gluten one) have popped up, I was just thinking today how I need to change my diet. I always feel so run down. I'm not stressing so much, just trying to find the ultimate diet for sustained energy levels, basic well-being and longevity (okay, I'm stressing a little). I want to avoid the sugar spike-and-crash cycle. However, fruit only seems to enhance my mood (and I've never really noticed a crash) so I don't think I will change my fruit-eating patterns, except to increase them.

Slocks, coeliac isnt about carbs, it's specifically about gluten! You can get carbs from other starches that dont hurt coeliacs (rice, etc)

Spy in the Cab Sav (Trayce), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 05:08 (sixteen years ago)

The abbreviation for foods w/gluten that we memorize in nursing school is "BROW" - barley, rye, oats, and wheat. Those are what people w/ celiac can't have. (Which would suck, I think, but fruit should be free of all of those things.)

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 05:21 (sixteen years ago)

they also can't have spelt!
make it BROWS

tehresa, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 05:29 (sixteen years ago)

though technically spelt is a form of wheat, but i think that's not 100% common knowledge.

tehresa, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 05:30 (sixteen years ago)

Awesome tip; it's possible you have saved me from missing a tricky question on the boards, tza!

Sara R-C, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 05:37 (sixteen years ago)

I misread that as "they also cant spell!" and wondered why BROW was misspelt. haw.

four weeks pass...

It's really weird, how you don't notice how BAD refined sugar makes you feel (all fuzzy headed and weird and a bit GRRRR) until you stop eating it for a while.

You don't really notice its effects when you're consuming it regularly. But stop eating it for a bit, then have a tiny bit (two chocolate ginger truffles - tiny tiny tiny) and suddenly it's like you're on drugs. WTF?

one year passes...

reposting this here from the NN thread because I think it deserves more discussion

in a candied nutshell: fructose (found in HFCS and sucrose [table sugar]) is bad for you and will kill you

dayo, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 14:04 (fifteen years ago)

is dried fruit particularly bad for you? I've switched to fruit and nuts instead of other things for when i get peckish, but i'm concerned about the sugar.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

fruit sugar is mainly fructose iirc

dayo, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

it is a lot of sugar in a small amount of food xpost

just sayin, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 14:19 (fifteen years ago)
