Movies! Films! Etc.!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Some topics:

I just saw "What Time Is It There?" finally. It was not quite as good as I was hoping, but very good nonetheless.

I am reading Peter Biskind's "Down And Dirty Pictures". I didn't think I really wanted to read a whole book about Sundance and Miramax, but it is really quite engrossing and addictive.

What should I see this weekend?

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Alexander Nevsky a lot, so does Ivan the Terrible live up to that film's reputation?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

What Time Is It There? didn't make much of an impression with me. Oh wait, except for the gorgeous framing shots. Every frame was extremely well-composed. But other than that, meh.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I am overly excited about Shaun of the Dead. I am making Sarah go see it with me tomorrow even though she doesn't really like horror movies. Yay!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I have had Coffee & Cigarettes on DVD for 3 weeks and haven't watched it yet.

Huk-L, Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I just saw Guy Maddin's "Cowards Bend The Knee" and it was pretty great. I saw some of Janie Grei$er's animated films and thought they were mostly snoozy.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm seeing Silver City on Saturday.

Can someone tell me what Shaun of the Dead is all about? The title makes it sound like a Wayans-style parody.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I bought a great-looking compendium of Positif articles published by MOMA. looking forward to reading that one.

xpost-Ned, I haven't seen either of those, should I?

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Shaun Of The Dead when i was in the UK. I urge all of you MERKINS to go and see it!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it an actual horror movie?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost-Ned, I haven't seen either of those, should I?

I'd definitely see Nevsky at least. All three (Ivan being a two-parter) are in a Criteirion box.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I have had Coffee & Cigarettes on DVD for 3 weeks and haven't watched it yet.
Don't bother.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The Onion review made it sound like a real horror movie in that the zombies themselves are scary and act like "real zombies" from "real horror movies." The humor comes from the hero characters I guess.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

milo OTM

Is it an actual horror movie?
No, have you seen Spaced?

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaun Of The Dead also looks very slick for an English film. Nice.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea what Spaced is!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You poor thing.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you have a region-freee DVD player? I could send you the first series along with these CDs I STILL haven't got round to mailing you.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha freeeeee I'm freeeeee at last

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Right now, the only DVD player I have is in my iMac, which I assume is region-free?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

NO, do not assume that.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Most Macs allow you to switch the region a few times and then they stick with the last one you selected. Weird, isn't it? I'm sure there's a way around it.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

appropos of nothing I would like to tell the people on this thread, whom I consider friends, this story:

My wife just wrote to me to say that she heard an interview with Chris Isaak on the radio this morning. During this interview, he recounted a story of how he used to live on a houseboat on a huge lake and would go kayaking every morning and feed the swans who lived on said lake. The swans and Chris Isaak became fast friends and he felt at peace.
My wife then asked me why WE can't be more like Chris Isaak. I did not know how to reply.

End of story.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh! That's really beautiful and sad and awesome.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

P.S. I will check on this "region" business.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It certainly has no competition so far today.

xpost

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, "Wicked Game" is an amazingly good song.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Was she implying that you should play more country flavored pop and sleep with Asians or that you should develop a penchant for aquatic birds? Is she telling you to kayak more often? Is she saying you should come up with hokey ready-made blurbs about how to 'be at peace' that you can drop on people at a moments notice?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

All of the above.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Jimmy Wilsey played a mean gheetar.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Making love with his ego. Wait, wrong guitarist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Making love with you id is more fun, though, n'est-ce pas?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

movies!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris Isaak was in some movies! Like Little Buddha, with Keanu Reeves AS ... the Buddha.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

and Fire Walk With Me!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

What is Layer Cake about?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

chris isaak is from stockton, CA, scotland.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it would take more of Chris Isaak-type money to live more like Chris Isaak.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, that was my real answer!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope every thread today doesn't turn into a discussion about money, but it sure seems like it might break down that way. Thursdays are the pits.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Brass Eye dvd is coming from Amazon.co.uk, you should come down to L.A. and watch it!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I would love to :(

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

back to movies...anyone planning on seeing the motorcycle diaries?

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

no, probably not

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe on DVD

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I finally saw Shrek 2 last night. It almost made my husband give into my incessant nagging about getting a pet kitten due to cute Puss-in-Boots type character. Almost. Then he realised that it wasn't a real kitten.

Here is a thread where people talk about Shaun of the Dead. It's very good (the film. not the thread. Though that's OK too, I guess)

Official Shaun of the Dead Thread!

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not sure what i think of Walter Salles, I like that actor though, he was great in Bad Reputation.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Layer Cake adam?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even know what that is!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

bye

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

bye!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep seein posters for it!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, it's some British gangster film, forget I mentioned it.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What you do jel?

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I work in a library, and post rubbish on ILX.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

you could watch brass eye in the comfort of your own home if I bothered to loan it to you.

they are showing the Big Lebowski in oakland outdoors on saturday night. We might go. You should too.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 23 September 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

it will be cold! maybe. will there be w333333333d?

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it is a drive-in thing. also, maybe people will get shot

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i will see about that last thing this week. although i do not know if I can partake of it if your wife is going to talk about ducks and chris isaak.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

drive-in != drive-by.

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Drive in would be great! forget the other thing. someone might want to hire me to do a (different) job for them! hooray! pleasepleaseplease let this work out!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

nice to see you put your two cents in, cozen.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

come back to scotland.

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I will. How are the rents these days? Is there a film school?

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

A LAW school?

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

what did I just graduate?

rent is reasonable.

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I just saw "What Time Is It There?" finally. It was not quite as good as I was hoping, but very good nonetheless.

after several years of loving wtith, i finally saw the hole. next up is the river, which i'm told is even more depressing. i can't get the image out of my head of the guy's limb (in the hole) sweeping in an arc like a pendulum through the woman's apartment.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

someone rent my apartment please. $900. near fancy feast in berkeley. it's not scotland though.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

omg 'the river'!

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to, but will cat hair destroy me?

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

new carpet, cat hair will be minimal. you are in a lease though. also, your couch may not fit through the door. also, I would hate to profit off of you.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

what happened to the shortage of affordable apartments in the east bay????? why are there hundreds of other 1 bedrooms in berkeley for $900 making mine no longer seem like a deal???? what happened?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind. the lease is the thing. And the wife won't want to give up the patio.

xpost don't forget we subletted a nice but tiny 1bed for 750 before.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

So... has anybody seen goodbye dragon inn yet? Will it be good

adrienne, Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to see that, adrienne!

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

this 'the river'?

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but this is only a sublet in so far as I hold the lease, it's not "please don't break our special glasses or mess up our fully furnished apartment". I'm not planning on moving back in in six months unless my wife kicks me out. I plan on never moving back there ever again.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, that 'the river.'

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 23 September 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Thora Birch's accent is terrible in the Hole.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

hey Adam, would you say this looks like the worst film ever?

teh pow! (blueski), Friday, 24 September 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 September 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair, boob ARE funny.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i heart Selma Blair but she is clearly a mentalist of the highest order. that movie has the most wtf cast ever, and not in a good way.

teh pow! (blueski), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate Knoxville.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not that WTF for a John Waters movie. It looks really, really bad, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

JUST TO CLARIFY, "BOOB" IS THE GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT PLURAL FORM OF "BOOB," HENCE, "BOOB ARE FUNNY" IS COMPLETELY CORRECT. THANK YOU.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

N/A YOU ARE A TEAT

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the final scene in the trailer had me almost dying with laughter when I saw it in a theater

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

what was that again? i don't think i could bear to watch it again myself

teh pow! (blueski), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

hi adam. haven't seen any films lately, but d/l cage/tudor 'indemediacy' (sp?) - its funny.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

that albert finney thread made me want to watch WOLFEN!!! but the videostore doesn't have it

jones (actual), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Badlands! I watched that this morning from 5AM to 7AM because I couldn't sleep.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Goodamnn, it's good.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

is mark back?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

adam, have you heard of mountains of the moon? it was recommended to me this morning, but I know nothing about it.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Am: hi!

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

me too!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 25 September 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

how can you be bored when an cluiche cheannais na hEireann is on this weekend?

darraghmac, Saturday, 25 September 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, Someone tell me what the spoiler is in The Forgotten!! I had to work on a promo thing for that movie all day yesterday. After fiddling around with HTML for it for hours, I'm not about to go see it in the theaters, but I want to know what the lame suprise at the end is. Have any of you seen it yet?

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 25 September 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

(An FYI that's applicable for earlier in the thread: Trio is currently playing episodes of that "Spaced" show mentioned along with the newly-released-in-the-U.S. Shaun of the Dead, just in case there are Americans curious about this TV show. Which I am, kinda, now.)

(Another FYI: I'm so stoked a local movie theater's playing A Dirty Shame. I really almost desperately want to go see it, and hopefully I will get that chance.)

(Yet another FYI: I'm all out of FYIs for this post and possibly for this thread. Yay, maybe.)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 25 September 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I watched Them last night, it was as good as I remember. James Arness must be about 7 feet tall!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 25 September 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Alexander Nevsky a lot, so does Ivan the Terrible live up to that film's reputation?

Totally. It's like the Russian Godfather. I lurve Part 2, esp. Part 1 is a little slow at the start, but it builds well. The evil aunt is freaky!

I think I'm seeing Silver City on Saturday.

Can someone tell me what Shaun of the Dead is all about? The title makes it sound like a Wayans-style parody.

Oh, I wish I could see the new Sayles (my hero!) soon...

Shaun of the Dead is a decent zombie comedy film. I recommend it - it's not teh gratest or anything, but it delivers on what it is.

P.S. I will check on this "region" business.

Macs handle the region stuff via hardware (ie firmware), so you have to have a hacked patch (which voids the warranty). There's a guy who goes by the handle "xvi" who used to do a lot of them, but I think he's retired. Anyway, if you don't have the latest of Macs, you might have a fair chance of being able to use one of his patches.

back to movies...anyone planning on seeing the motorcycle diaries?

I keep on saying I'm gonna, but I don't ever seem to care enough. I think a lot of my peeps are doing the same.

So... has anybody seen goodbye dragon inn yet? Will it be good

Planning to check it out at the NFT soon (if I haven't already missed it...).

A Dirty Shame: Must stay on top of Waters films. When is it coming to the UK?!?!?
Badlands - intentionally avoiding this one right now, since someone thought that my latest "pitch" (not really a pitch to anyone impt) for a film sounded a lot like Badlands. I figure I'll avoid it so as to prevent influence, only b/c now that I've heard a possible influence, any viewing will magnify it despite myself. I actually nearly saw this a few years back, but in a stellar situation better viewed than described, I narrowly avoided being hit by a car. In the process, I dropped my rental DVD copy of Badlands, which was run over instead. That's the only rental film I've ever destroyed.

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 26 September 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Legally Blonde was on tonight, it's one of the best films ever made.

i just saw it last night (WARNING ! SPOILER: it's unnamed aliens and/or interdimensional beings of some sort conducting 'experiments' with the memories of julianne moore's character)

'"the forgotten"? more like i wish i could have forgotten it!'

anyway it's a dud.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 26 September 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Bus 174 last night. god it was depressing and sad.

adam. (nordicskilla), Sunday, 26 September 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I also bought this back from the UK. It is a flawed but interesting collection. There should be more short film DVD collections!

adam. (nordicskilla), Sunday, 26 September 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Which one is the Kieslowski?

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

why are you not watching cartoons you slacker?

I watched Bonnie and Clyde this afternoon. It is really weird, actually.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the sequels with clint are much better

darragh.mac (darragh.mac), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I watched the Alamo this afternoon. It was bad, except for the guy who played Juan Seguin and Billy Bob (of course). Take the most heroic/stupid/mythologized action in early American history (take THAT, yanquis) and make it long, drawn-out and boring? Yech. The odes to revisionism (slaves, Crockett and Bowie's legends, Crockett didn't die during the battle, etc.) were completely inorganic, it felt like the director wanted to do the standard Heroes of Texas thing and higher-ups at Disney recognized you couldn't do that today.

Some great moments marred by lots of crap.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

why are you not watching cartoons you slacker?

I just got back from that UPA Gerald Mcboing Boing special! It was great!

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw both Silver City and Shaun of the Dead this weekend. The latter was much better than the former.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 September 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaun of the Dead was great! adam told me today that it might not be as good as I wanted it to be. he thinks I have higher expectations of things, apparently.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 27 September 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he thinks you are a bit of a crank.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 September 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I just watched the Sweet Smell Of Success.

I think Kyle has trouble enjoying himself sometimes.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 September 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

what a movie

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 27 September 2004 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

darragh.mac (darragh.mac), Monday, 27 September 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 27 September 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam, where on earth did you see "What Time Is It There?" ? I've been dying to see it again since I first saw it as part of the film festival last year...

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 27 September 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

it's probably on video already no?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 27 September 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I rented it about a year ago.

jaymc, Monday, 27 September 2004 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It was a Netflix.

I can't believe it has taken me this long to see Sweet Smell Of Success. Yes, what a movie! It is one of Chuck Tatum's favourite movies.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 September 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaun of the Dead was fun.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 September 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Good for you, Nick A, good for you.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, right?

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Recommend me something really fun.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Rock'n'Roll High School

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Lightning Bolt: The Power of Salad and Milkshakes

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

MUSA THE WARRIOR is really good if like crazy Korean martial arts madness!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Rock N Roll fun? It looks a little ropey.

xpost - Alex, do you like Tetsuo?

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Rock N Roll HIGH SCHOOL, I meant.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Sweet Smell of Sucess is amazing! See Elmer Gantry too! And The Swimmer! Lancaster was untouchable for a while!

(x-post) I like the first one! And Tokyo Fist was pretty fun.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

just watch sweet smell of success over and over again, the read 'bright lights big city'

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

RRHS is funnier than you would imagine. It has Paul Bartel and his wife whose name I can't think of and Cliff Howard in it, in addition to the Ramones of course. One of the main characters is pretty fucking annoying (that girl from Halloween, not Jamie Lee Curtis), but the rest of it is great great great.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I just saw The Leopard two weeks ago (and a doc on Luchino Visconti last night.) Really good as well.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I REALLY need to see The Swimmer.

Burt Lancaster looks like he is made of granite. It's great!

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

On an unrelated note you should also go on a Bob Fosse bender Star 80! Lenny! All That Jazz!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't get the hype over notorious

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you are right, Alex.

Notorious by hitchcock?

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The Hitchcock? It's okay. It's certainly not his best.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha it's a damned sight better than Mission Impossible 2!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Motorcycle Diaries was good, in a modest, unambitious way.

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the Hithcock. it is okay. how did it warrant a Criterion Reissue? who picks those?

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i have started renting movies again after a 5 year break.

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

netflix frightens me. its the crack cocaine of movie watching

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

What did you think of Cross Of Iron?

Key Largo is secretly one of my favorite films.

the current, just-finished season of Six Feet Under really is as bad as you have heard, btw.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It's neat to be able to that though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Cross of Iron is okay. It's no Big Red One or Thin Red Line.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Sholay and The Night of the Following Day and The Duel are all pretty bad btw.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

So is Secret Window actually.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

it is better than most stuff though (six feet under that is, secret window was horrible).

i kind of miss netflix. but I never watched the movies I rented. why? because I rented pretentious movies. But when they finally arrived, I didn't really want to watch them. so they sat around. it started to make watching movies feel like a chore, something I had to do to make my $20 investment worth it. still, the selection was good.
I am very conflicted about it all!

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been watching films (esp. BBC stuff) like crazy, but I used to spend over a hundred dollars a month on rentals at video stores so I'm not sure if there is a great deal of uptick.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The top ten in no particular order btw:

1. Musa the Warrior, 2001
2. Evil Dead Trap
3. The Ruling Class, 1972
4. Small Change, 1976
5. Star 80, 1983
6. The Harder They Come, 1973
7. Melvin and Howard, 1980
8. Requiem for a Heavyweight, 1962
9. For a Few Dollars More, 1965
10. The Long Riders, 1980

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone said the third season (of Six Feet Under) was bad though and I thought it was great.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

What is Evil Dead Trap?

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Crazy mid-80s Japanese shock-horror flick.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds great!

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It is!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The sequel is supposed to be rub though. I have it my list, but it seems to get moved down a lot.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I REALLY need to see The Swimmer.
Burt Lancaster looks like he is made of granite. It's great!

You probably won't approve of this suggestion but you really should read the story as well.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Why wouldn't he approve of the suggestion?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael thinks I am a film rockist!

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

According to Netflix I have rented 92 movies between 6/7/04 and right now.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

adam do you like Bonnie and Clyde? I just saw this and I don't know how I feel about it.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not keen on Bonnie and Clyde.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss being a film student. I took it for granted. :(

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

could you get away with film analyses like "I'm not keen on it" in film school?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to turn in one word papers, "Meh."

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in SF,

'Cause it's usually too dark in the theater to read.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

kyle, I will send you my final paper.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.uea.ac.uk/eas/people/kramer/kramer.shtml

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does that sound so ominous, adam? I can see you dimly uplit from the front speaking in Bela Lugosi accent:

"I will send you my FINAL paper. Mwahahahaha."

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It will be the last paper Kyle ever reads.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

So it's like the Ring but for film students? "I didn't have enough money to make a movie, the watching of which would kill you, but if you read even half this film school paper, your eyes will glaze over, your breathing will slow inexorably down and your will to live will disappear completely."

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Something like that, yes!

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, isn't that sweet?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam, does Sky Captain go well with Sparks?

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing goes well with Sky Captain. Certainly nothing that keeps one awake.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I still want to see it!

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to see it too! Not badly enough to see it before it hits the video store though.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

King of Marvin Gardens!

{Sand in the [vaseline} on the lens] (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

We saw The Swimmer last night.

Has anyone seen Of Gods And Men?

Tous Les Garcons S'Appellent Little Lord Travolta (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)
