Attack of the Pugs, Coming to a Neighborhood Near You

I always thought Pugs were really ugly, as verified by the expression UGLY PUGly. But then they started showing up everywhere. Lots of stores nears my apartment have resident pugs. Our old downstairs neighbor had one, who I miss more than the neighbors themselves. I can't go on a walk anywhere without passing someone walking a pug.

Now I want one.

Have pugs used their powers against you yet? Do you have one?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

What stupid movie had the alien pug in it? Oh, was it Men in Black?

Has anyone else noticed this fad? And where do pet fads come from?

Also, what's the deal with Puggles (pug/beagle mixes)? Do you think they're the next big thing?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Pugs are cute. If you put them on their back, their eyes bug out. Like gremlins.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel sorry for them and their human-breeding-enforced respiratory difficulties though.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Boston Terriers are probably even bigger, as far as trends go.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Are pugs the new iPods?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

whats up with that photo of the girl? it seems to load when i click on other things

pugs are fun but i prefer english bulldogs

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to feel the same way, 'til I met my wife and she introduced me to a few pugs in person (most especially Maude at Paper Doll on Division Street). We got a faun female last year and we've never looked back -- she's our baby.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I like some pugs, but I was recently dating a girl with a pug and I HATED this f*cking stupid awful animal. I think it mainly had to do with the fact that she never punished it for bad behavior - but I immediately thought, this will never be the mother of my children (not that we were very serious or anything, but still). I knew another girl with a similarly haughty and ill-mannered pug.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(god, did I really just post that?)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(most especially Maude at Paper Doll on Division Street).

This is one of our local pugs.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Along with the pugs at Penelope's.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What girl, kephm?

I think Puggles were bred to resolve the pug breathing problem, but are they cute enough?

x-post - Yeah, Maude closed the deal for me.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I read an article recently that at a lot of people buy pugs because the breed is trendy and then end up giving the pugs up because the owners are not prepared to deal with the shedding and the high-strung personality. That's probably the type of people who like to carry their dog around in their purse.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

this "puggle" is an ABOMINATION!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, cooler than a pug:

http://www.akc.org/breeds/featured_breed/boston/boston1.gif

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks cute enough (the puggle).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Hstencil otm.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Pugs do shed a lot (pity you when you wear black in the presence of a faun one) and, uh, yes, they do have energy to spare, but I find them to be the friendliest, funniest breed of dog around. The few large-scale pug meetups I've been to have featured very few trendy types, too.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - finally! sheesh, blinded by the pug.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Pugs seem like sweet dogs. I'm just partial to the Boston Terrier because my grandparents used to own one.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I like dogs with short muzzles. The French Bulldog is another good one.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Pugs do not breed well with other kinds of dogs.

And how are French bulldogs to own?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know. But they look cool.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean I love just about any kind of dog, but getting any specific kind of dog because they're "cool" is of course nonsense.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Pugs do shed a lot (pity you when you wear black in the presence of a faun one) and, uh, yes, they do have energy to spare

Oh yeah, I hated the shedding. Pug hair was on every inch of her apartment, and she let it sleep in her bed (ARGH!). I took to only wearing certain clothes when I knew I would be over there.

Actually, in retrospect, I liked the dog and it could be very cute, but it was definitely the king of her apartment. I kinda feel sorry for them both.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Wiener doggies are much more suited for the "hot dog" look.
http://www.samuraiburger.com/jumbodog.jpg

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

French bulldogs are my *favorite*.

http://www.pcmtbulldogs.com/Jean

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

They are adorable. I've been really wanting a dog lately, but it wouldn't be fair because I'm almost never home.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF, it's like a little pixie-dog.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

they get bigger, at least some of them.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Do all French bulldogs have those weird pink ears? I mean, I know the ears stick up like a rabbit's, but that color is freaky.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I would get one if it dressed as a hot-dog. Baked Bean Teeth's pug is adorable.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 4 October 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps this points towards a disturbing trend in the cultishness of pug ownership (in Chicago at least--googling also turns up a Portland Pug Party):
Chicago Pug Party

From that website, the scariest pug in the world:
http://www.pugparty.com/pugparty/graphics/pug_pics/pic_4.02.jpg

robots in love (robotsinlove), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Leon, I too am desperate for a pooch but working full time makes the joy of dog ownership virtually impossible. It's not fair because the out of work drug addicts on my street keep dogs and are with them all day but barely feed them.

Something is wrong here.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Are pugs the ones whose eyes fall out if you smack them in the back of the head?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

PUGFAP.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

that last picture is truly terrifying!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

my ex has a pug. i didn't think i'd like it, since i generally don't love small dogs. but he's really quite sweet and cute. and his name is max. he's also the boss of their flat. maybe it's a characteristic of them. maybe only people that want to get bossed by their dogs get pugs.

i think the puggle is way cuter than normal pugs.

i fucking hate boston terriers.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Max is the perfect name for a pug, though I really liked Louis, which was our neighbor's pug's name.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Here is my Calvin, the best pug possible!

Seattle has a massive pug social scene. He'll be going to an all-pug halloween party, dressed as a PIMP. He's a really sweet, smart little guy, with much attitude.

People who don't like small dogs often like pugs - because they aren't *really* small dogs. They're just smallish mastiffs. :-)

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Repost it Layna! Use "i" before the http://,,, addy.

Our neighbors used to go to Pug meet-ups all the time. Have you made friends at those or is it all about staring at cute dogs?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.hawksong.com/~kingchiron/calvinhuh.jpg

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

We've made friends, AND stared at the cute dogs. :-) Note that Calvin gets more invitations than we do.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I LOVE YOU CALVIN

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Here is my Calvin, the best pug possible!

I'm at work, and I got this quizzical message when trying to view Calvin's photo:

Access Denied (content_filter_denied)

Your request was denied because of its content categorization: "Sex"

?????

p.s. the Pug Party is HUGE -- the last one I went to at "Joe's on Weed Street" had 500 dogs or something like that.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

BBT, I can assure you there's nothing sexual about the Calvin picture; although he does get up to some mischief in the dog park!

The annual Seattle Pug Gala had over a THOUSAND pugs this year. Surreal. :-)

Oh wow. You have no idea how happy those pictures just made me. When I'm bored, I spend time looking at rescue pugs available for adoption and try to think of ways I could actually swing owning on right now.

Did you see the article in the onion last week about the pug recall? It was pretty hysterical.

http://www.theonion.com/content/news/dog_breeders_issue_massive_recall

Also, I know I've posted a similar pic on ILX before but I love this one so much that I'll add it here. These are my parents pugs - Molly and Maggie:

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

The worst is those people who let their pugs get really super fat, and they look like little barrels skating down the street.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

wait, how is that "the worst"

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

The wurst.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

barrelpugs are very cute, but it's not healthy for the to be so round.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

it's not healthy for them to be PUGS lol

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

That's probably true. Poor wall-eyed little beasts.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

they can't even bark right because they can barely breathe.

OTOH the best, most incomprehensible part of DUNE is patrick stewart charging down a sandy hill with a gun in one hand and a pug in the other screaming some battle cry or some shit !!!!?!?!?!?!

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

I know that pugs supposedly have all these health problems yet my parents have had 5 and they've never had anything unusal except for some serious snoring problems!

Pugs and Persians at my house both lead to a lifetime of jokes about the subject having run into a wall at full speed. Ex "Did you see Audrey in the sunroom just now? She can't find her toy and she looks very confused." "You would too if you'd just chased a ping pong ball into a brick wall."

Laurel, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

There's no way that dog can reach the brake pedal. UNSAFE.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

Oilyrags, Thursday, 31 May 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

Especially since he's obviously already run into a wall.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 31 May 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

THAT'S what I'm talking about.

I am glad to help.

Did anyone see Denise Richards and her pugs and Boston terrier on the Dog Whisperer? They are funny when they stick their little faces right in the camera.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 31 May 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

i missed that one. i did see patti labelle and her 150lb mastiff, though, which was great. he took agin her at some point during his puppyhood, so she hadn't gone within striking distance of him in several years.

lauren, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yikes. There was a 150 lb mastiff at the bar last friday, but he was the mellowest dog I've met in quite some time. You wouldn't think that something that big and muscular and sharp-toothy could be so unintimidating, and I guess they aren't always.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

the few that i've met have been sweet and laid-back - total softies. they just wanted to hang out and drool and have their ears rubbed. this guy was a sweetheart in general but had unpredictable bursts of aggression when he sensed that he could dominate someone (due to an early lack of training), and patti's complete terror around him clearly fired him up. by the end it was all good. he went to live with his trainer and her family, and patti came over and walked him without incident.

lauren, Thursday, 31 May 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

One day I will have a dog, dammit

kingfish, Thursday, 31 May 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Just got offed, Monday, 27 August 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

They are nice, but they can't breathe right (like, audibly so) and are constantly all messed up with breathing / panting / temperature / water / exertion balances, and when you think about it they're just plain malformed and bizarre and have been made to have no faces, to the point where now they have to be crossbred with nosey dogs like beagles in order to restore the various important things that a face actually does for a dog, and ... also I find their tails sort of gross, though I don't know why, so ... I like a pug, don't get me wrong, they're very nice, but I find it hard to be all like pro-pug as a breed.

M&M are awesome. Neither of them are actually very good looking pugs by breed standards but the fact that they're pretty ridiculous looking makes them 100% more awesome. Also, they're best friends which is one of the cutest things ever. Sadly they're my parents' and not mine.

if these have been here for close to an hour and erica hasn't gone mental over them then she is probably lying incapacitated somewhere and i should probably call emergency services

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 17 August 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

FYI the number here is 911.

The pug loaf is almost as disturbing to me as the time a friend told me that a bunch of baby orangutans in a wheelbarrow in a pic I showed him were probably being hauled away to be turned into orangujam. ;_;

Way way way upthread I was WRONG about that pug and the person - we never dated again, but she's a great pug-mom and her pug has mellowed with age.

Henry met an 8 year old pug named walter at obedience class yesterday and they became fast friends - although there were a couple of weezing times where he kept giving me a look like "isnt anyone going to help this puppy he is choking!"

Aw at the wheezing. I would like to see Henry and Walter hang out.

At my favorite breakfast/coffee place just now one of the workers came in with one of her two pugs, a very energetic and goofy little guy.

Police: Dogs Fed on Owner's Body
Pugs Left Alone without Food after Nebraska Man Killed Himself

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/12/16/ap/strange/main5988667.shtml

PAPILLION, Neb., Dec. 16, 2009

(AP) The Nebraska Humane Society is seeking a new home for two small dogs that police say fed on their owner's body after he killed himself.

Police in the Omaha suburb of Papillion found the pugs named Harry and Sally late last week. Lt. Chris Whitted said Wednesday an autopsy showed the man was dead for two weeks of a self-inflicted gunshot before his body was found.

Humane Society spokesman Mark Langan says he can't verify the dogs had fed on the body, but he says it would be normal behavior for dogs left without food or water for two weeks.

Langan says the dogs appear to be well-adjusted and in excellent shape. He says they're unlikely to suffer from long-term psychological effects because "they don't have memories like people."

Poor puggies.

I used to feel the same way, 'til I met my wife and she introduced me to a few pugs in person (most especially Maude at Paper Doll on Division Street).

^^^^^^THIS X A MILLION. Maude is one of the most endearing dogs I've ever met. If and when I get to the point where having an animal around seems like anything resembling a good idea, I can totally see getting a pug. I cared for the sweetest little pug puppy for a summer and got very attached, and then she was sadly hit by a car only a couple of months later. ;_;

What a dumbshit. If there's any proof that life is worth living, it's the continued existence of pugs!
