ILX Mood Ring

In which we detail the shifting moods of ILX in general.

Right now, with the changing of the seasons, the air getting crisper and the leaves falling from the trees, ILX seems to be getting somewhat wistful, reminiscing over lost loves, the single ILXors feeling lonely and demanding help on "how do I meet girls/boys," and the ILXors in relationships asking for proposal etiquette. Despite a brief flare-up on the MoMA thread yesterday, hot tempers seem to have been dampened by cooler weather and a sense of something missing from our lives. Among the American ILXors, there is also an undercurrent of politically-induced tension.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris, I'm a little homesick for that. I called my mother yesterday and asked her to send me a bag of orange leaves.

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

She said "that's ridiculous, I'm not wasting my money on sending leaves in the mail. Besides, there might be a worm or something in them and it could reproduce in California and destroy the ecosystem."

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick's pretty OTM. I like how political tension is doing a really good job preventing ILXors from their usual sniping.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually it was this.

Mitch, That mood ring is hypnotic.

I want some Winter Warmer. Is that a mood?

When I was little, my sister and I would gather pretty acorns in a bucket to play with, but inevitably every year we would forget about it and discover it later filled with worms and rotten ick.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread was intended as a reflection of the mood of ILX as a whole, not for personal purposes, but these twists and turns are part of the meandering country road that is ILX, and if this is the route that we have chosen, then I have no choice but to follow it until the next exit.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, in which case... I think that postings have been rather been lackadasical lately. It's kinda hard to get worked up (for good or bad) about anything happening. The political threads can be fun, but most everybody's entrenched themselves so deeply for this election that besides the occasional snipery there's little but choir-preaching.

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i am really in the mood for choir-preaching! some of us live in political isolation and it is so refreshing to hear similar opinions!

Maybe it's just because it's Monday, but ILX seems be settling down for a long winter's nap, or maybe even a hibernation. We have made a comfortable pillow out of the brown and orange leaves on the ground and are getting cozy.

Man... nothing like an autumn nap, with the window just barely cracked, about 65 degrees in the apartment, big blanket, cats on your feet. Add a little wine, and it may be my favorite thing in all the world.

KISS MY FUCKING RING AND I AIN'T WEARIN NO JEWELLERY

Finchley Benchley, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet you all wish you were leaf peepers right now. The colours are amazing - and we've only just begun. I think Americans in general like to be nostalgic for things - The cool autumn breezes reminding one to go inside and have a nurturing cup of hot chocolate. Etc.
I talk politics with my family, and it was recently stated "Oh, well. By Thanksgiving we won't have to discuss this anymore."
That is the measure of our days. The Halloween display in my neighborhood is very prominent. I particularly like the fake tombstones and the ghosts hung from trees with the big American flag hanging from the front door. Ghosts? Tombstones? Patriotism? Pumpkins?

aimurchie, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'M NOT AMERICAN SO FRANKLY I DON'T GIVE A SHIT

Finchley Benchley, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Where are you from? What's your expected date of regime change?

sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Me? I'm from Massachusetts and expect the regime to NOT change on Nov. 2nd. But I'm cynical. The leaves are changing and it is very beautiful here. Stunning, in fact. The mountain that i can see from my apartment is, every day, a brand new vision. yesterday, some of the trees turned yellow. There is still a blanket of green, but every day it changes. The trees here in the valley are rioutous with colour - vivid reds and even purples. And all of the leaves are falling on the ground. I am very happy that i don't have to rake this year.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

what part of mass? im there too.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The police station I pass on my walk every morning has a huge Halloween display up in the bushes. There are lots of skeletons climbing up out of the ground, but also some huge scary monsters peering around bushes.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Western Mass. The Happy Valley. Easthampton, specifically. But i grew up in Holyoke and Springfield. So i have my down and dirty roots. And you, fellow Masshole?

aimurchie, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The armpit of Massachusetts. Worcester.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(Wrentham kicks Worcester's ass!)

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

OOOOh. Worcester. That definitely trumps Springfield and Holyoke. What are you doing there?

aimurchie, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Lowell kicks Wrenthams ass.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Great Barrington kick anywhere's ass? I've been there.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I grew up in Grafton, lived in Boston for a few years and then bought a cheap-o condo out here. Not all of Worcester is bad, im in a nice part. I work in Westboro though which is very nice.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ROUTE 9 EAST was a MESS this morning. WTF , house on fire

kephm (kephm), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

No wonder why i didn't hear from my wife until 10am.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Does Great Barrington kick anywhere's ass? I've been there. "

Oh my darling sweetheart - you have just stumbled upon a very historical conversation about Massachusetts and its environs. Great Barrington is in Western mass - but also in the Berkshires. So it's practically New York. Worcester is in the center of the state and is a notoriously sad place. Springfield and Holyoke are very sad. Longmeadow is a very rich town - right next to Springfield. Worcester, the very center of the state, is a bad town. Well, that's popular opinion.
Massachusetts is very much a history of labor and manufacturing. Each town and city has its pride - mostly from the defunct mills. In Holyoke, which was the "paper city", the irish do not get along with the recent immigrants. It's spics and micks. Westfield, which was the "whip city" in its heyday (the manufacturing of whips for horses and buggies) is now a run down city that manages to support certain local busnesses while, also, being very xenophobic about the recent influx of imigrants - from Ukraine.
Springfield is now the home to many West African people. And each town is very specific about its population.
Holyoke is for the Hispanics. Westfield is for the Russians (Ukranians, but). Springfield is for the Vietnamese and the West Africans. And god help you if you dare to cross a border.
Great Barrington is for rich people. Massachusets remains the birthplace of American democracy only because we can't seem to figure it out for ourselves. Our governor is a mormon Republican and our Democrat senator is running for president. Go figure.

aimurchie, Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah well, I'm (relatively speaking) rich, that'll do.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

and all that crap you hear about Worcester being a bad place is totally untrue. Granted its very depressing with its rundown mills everywhere...but it also has its charms. Diners, triple deckers, me, me, me.
