It wasn't so much a decision at the time as it was an accident with birth control pills. I was on antibiotics and apparently they cancel out the pill! (Though, so I don't seem like a total asshole, I did ask my doctor about it and he said the ones he was putting me on 'should be okay.')

Otherwise, I wasn't making a conscious decision - had I not gotten pregnant when I did, I would have waited another year or two to try. I don't necessarily think there's any right time to do it, it all depends on how you and your partner feel. People put it off because 'there isn't enough money', or 'we work a lot', or 'I'm not grown up enough', or 'I don't know how to be a parent', and while those seem like valide reasons, they're all sort of crap, too. There will never really be enough money unless you are a Spelling or a Gates; works schedules can be worked around; growing up takes pretty much all your life, and I think to be an effective parent you need to retain some of your own childishness; and no one knows how to be a parent - you pick it up as you go along. It's a learning curve. You simply do the best you can with what you have. As long as you can be patient and kind and loving, you should be okay. Practice: borrow someone else's kid for the day. It'll give you a teensy bit of insight into what it's like to have a kid around, but don't put too much stock in it. You will endure things from your own child that would make you drown someone's else's in a barrel of water. If you have the capacity to love someone endlessly and completely, you have the capacity to be a wonderful parent. The end.

It's a big step, and it's scary as hell, but it's the most rewarding thing I've ever been a part of. Sure there are days when I've thought about what might life might have been like had I not had Spencer, where I'd be, and what I could have done, but at the end of the day, I know what all-consuming and unselfish love is and it works for me.

Does your gf know you feel this way? I assume it's come up, but maybe you should talk about it again. Find out why she does, explore why you don't. Perhaps you can reach a happy medium? I know couples who have a zillion kids and are the happiest things in the world, but on the other hand, I know people who are equally happy and fulfilled who don't.

I don't embarrass too easily, actually. I think the nearest thing to embarrassment was last weekend - I had a bit to drink on Saturday and ended up saying something quite appalling to someone on another message board. Admittedly he is known for being a bit of a twat, but to post publicly "You don't get much sex, do you? With women, I mean" was rather needlessly cruel. I was embarrassed when I saw the thread the next day :(

My family. Otherwise -- I'd like to say I'd die for the salvation of mankind, but I think if push came to shove I'd probably wimp out. I'd also kinda look forward to the endtimes, fireworks and dragons and all.

I dunno, the reason I asked this is because I don't consider myself to be selfish, and yet I'm not sure whether I'd die for anything, not even for my children. Although that's probably going to change once/if I really have them, right Luna?

Also, I'm an atheist, and I don't believe in any sort of afterlife, a fact which has significantly diminished my willingness to die for any cause. No seven virgins waiting for this dude!

I don't know, I guess it's a question which points towards regrets, but I can't think of many, well I can, but I can't think of many regrets I could have changed by acting differently, which maybe means they aren't regrets at all. I think really I'd like to go back to a general time period; when I was a teenager, and back then I think I'd like to have been nicer to people perhaps. then again maybe I wouldn't be who I am today. maybe that's why I want to do it, I don't know.

I realise the question says "one decision", but I can't think of one huge defining decision I've made in my life to date, perhaps cos I'm only 21.

As I've said elsewhere, the biggest regret I have about my teenage years is that I never had a teenage relationship, and it seems to be a sort of rite of passage maybe. I don't think I could have done much differently, it's water under the bridge to a certain extent.
