sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably Mandee.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The poster of Chairman Rofflemao.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

positive or negative? different answers for both

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I don't remember names too well, but the negative effects I've gotten from these particular posters is that I come on ILX too often.

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

good save!

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did I post the same fucking message twice? Shit!

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Jon/Ian, no doubt.

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

That was an accident? I just thought it was a statment of how you're on here too often.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. Yeah, it was.
I actually haven't been coming on here lately. I don't got much to say.

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

You sure don't "got" much to say if you can't say it correctly.

(Don't say anything about my poor spelling!)

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok! I don't have much to say. Happy?

Fight Club: The Thread

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No.

I'm ever so proud of you! Aww! The two year older than me person that people think is me is a fast learner!

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

x post

There's no fight clubs for girls. And fight clubs didn't exist before the movie (or the book).
And I've just changed my e-mail - not that I think anyone cares (not a grab at pity), but I don't want you to think that I'm someone else. Or something.

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Aja, don't hate me. Cuz if you do, I'll CRY.

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Just kidding.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't hate you Nowell. How could I hate a replica of myself?

I am starting to hate this Algebra homework. It's easy, but it's just too many problems. I GET IT ALREADY!

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

A replica of yourself?

I am not a replica of anybody! And that was funny, Wooden.

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, ok. A two year older replica.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Asshole!

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't mean that.

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Nowell, you're like me, except you curse a lot.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

unless it's someone famouse like umm, uh, who's a good example, umm, oh, who's a famouse person that, oh forget it. Just be a replica of me, it's a lot easier.

Alright, I'll stop. I'm just trying to procrastinate because I don't want to do my homework.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Laura!

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Jeremy! You're like a burst of sunshine this morning.

I was going to say Ian/Jon too btw.

Laura E (laurae55), Thursday, 21 October 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It is still surprising to me, considering the negative effect he's had on ILX, that I know people who know people who have actual regard for Jon Williams as a human being, and would be sad if he dropped down dead tomorrow.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 21 October 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it is queer how the thread no longer reflects its title.

Should it be restarted?

the bluefox, Thursday, 21 October 2004 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably not.

There are several people who post to ILx who have had a transformative effect on my life, but I think of them as friends first and ILxors second. I couldn't say that any ILxor as such has done this.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 October 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

A Million Talking Hot Dogs (AaronHz), Thursday, 21 October 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

you have all touched me in some way or another

*moves hand away*

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 21 October 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The most immediate and longterm positive transformative effect on my life? Probably Suzy. Considering what I was going through when I met her, I probably wouldn't be alive without her. [/aw shucks]

Danger Whore (kate), Thursday, 21 October 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

There are five or six of them I think. People who have opened me up to new circles of friends, looked out for me when I've been in a particularly bad way (and vice versa), taken me to exciting places in Europe, introduced me to fantastic new music or just provided a lot of good times. They know who they are I'm very grateful to all of them.

There's one ILXer who almost did transform my life in a very real sense, by almost sending me on a completely different career path. It never actually happened and maybe that's a good thing in the long run but it was wonderful to be given the opportunity.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

we're all quite alike tho. it would be like incest.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate perhaps, me nevah!! Stevem & Matt DC are like brothers. That kind of brotherly love is just wrong! bad, bad, BAD!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt’s very confused, as he walks with Stevem and no Alba, out the doorway and into the street. Stevem never says no to him when he looks at him like that, not even when Matt wants him to do something like dance on a table in some random pub so Matt can take pictures and pretend to stuff pound-notes he doesn’t actually have into his waistband. Not that he’d ever make Stevem do anything like that.

Maybe it’s just a Stevem thing, the not saying no, because Alba just did, he said it more than once, actually, and didn’t even weaken when Matt called him a treacherous dog, abandoning his comrades in their hour of need. So it’s just them, just him and Stevem and the rain.

Stevem’s arms are looped around his neck, hands linked loosely, head back on Matt’s shoulder. Matt’s arm’s around his waist, hand curled at his side, Stevem’s skin all nice and warm where his shirt’s ridden up, and Matt’s chilled fingers dig in a bit, trying to hide from the rain.

“Matt?” Stevem whispers, and Matt stops elbowing people out of the way, pausing under a lamp post to look at him.
“Yeah?”
“Right. Just checking.”

Danger Whore (kate), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops, wrong thread.

Danger Whore (kate), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The official answer to this question is now 'Kate'. I'm not sure anything will ever be the same again.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My pleasure. ;-)

Kissing Time At The Pleasure Unit (kate), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

time to diffuse the situation with a thread-title based joke answer: jel

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

This scenario, coupled with that of Club Popular dancing in a linked circle to "Waterloo," has very nearly caused me to eat my breakfast a second time.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure my mind can comprehend ilx today

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello. I work in subtle ways, you probably won't notice the effects for a good few years yet. An epiphany awaits.

I've always found the writings of Hanle y to be very sage.

jel, Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

You are confusing sage with parsley.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

if you'd put the space before the y that'd be funnier, jsl

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I did put the space before the y! You are tripping all over my life. Stop it!

jel, Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i was not referring to you

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The space thing is overdone. Spice is the new frontier.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Behave yourselves or I'm going to get Constable Knapweed to take you in for a stern reprimand.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Now, I see. I was dumbfounded by the jsl, which I assumed was a typing error, or typo as the kids call them. A thousand apologies.

jel, Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think 'jsl' is his secret bed name for me. Frankly, it makes me want to throw up.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

jsl is an abbrev. of 'jus sayin like'

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

What Alba said in his second sentence, except subsitute "ILx sex" for "it."

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Megatron. I KNOW he's here.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 21 October 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't know. I've been distracted into thoughts of Carol Vorderman's sram.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 October 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I posted an answer to this, but ILX ate it. It's either K4te St. Claire, whose existence indirectly and in a weird roundabout way eventually led me to ILX. It was a circuitous route that began in around 1997 when I randomly visited her website. What if I hadn't and had never found ILX? I wouldn't listen to Daft Punk or Basement Jaxx and I would still be a corny indie fuq and wouldn't know Ken Chu...

Which brings me to answer 2: Ken Chu, who I talk to every day and who is one of the best people I've ever known, and without a doubt the kindest. He manages to be one of my best friends, despite the distance.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 21 October 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew Perpetua, in terms of suggestions of musical avenues to take. Sometimes he was right, sometimes he was wrong, but my tastes were expanded, certainly. Plus, he’s been kind enough to hook me up with a lot of hard-to-find stuff. We actually met on the Fake Matador Bulletin Board, which often felt like a haven from real (crappy) life when I was in college, and Matthew helped make that board a brighter place for me (so did Paul Cox).

Probably Luna and Mandee, because they're the ones I've most corresponded with outside ILX. Also Ed, Mark H and Hanna, who've I've met outside ILX (Ed twice now).

It wasn't particularly transformative, but it was certainly weird meeting RJG and Cathy in real life a couple of weeks ago: I was walking down a mountain in Barcelona, and there wasn't a soul in sight, until suddenly I hear someone yelling "Are you Finnish?!", and I see two people on the other side of the road, and it was RJG and Cathy.

nathalie, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently they spotted me walking down the hill, but didn't know how to pronounce my name, so they just decided to yell "Are you Finnish?". At first I didn't realize who they were, so I was like, "Huh, does it show?".

Did you recognise them as RJG and Cathy after they approached you (and before they told you)?

ailsa, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Then again, I'm pretty bad at remembering anyone's faces. Just the other day some girl came to talk to me on the tram, but I had no idea who she was, so I just tried to pretend I remembered her, and I was thinking "Who the hell is she? I hope she isn't someone I've fooled around with and then forgotten..." It was only after I left the tram I remembered that she was someone I knew from the uni, I'd even stayed overnight at her place at a pyjama party.

It is now me. For all of you. Hello. I predict your hostility and welcome it with stinky ballsack.

dean ge, Saturday, 30 June 2007 03:24 (eighteen years ago)

^ I predict your hostility

yeah, for good reason.

My favorite part, so far, is about 24 minutes in, when the narrator says,

"At Luke 22:10 when Jesus is asked by his disciples where the next passover will be when he is gone, Jesus replies,

'Behold, when ye entered into the city, there shall a man meet you bearing a pitcher of water...follow him into the house where he entereth in'

This scripture is by far one of the most revealing of all astrological references. The man bearing the pitcher of water is Aquarius, the water bearer, who is always pictured as a man pouring out a pitcher of water. He represents the age after Pisces, and when the son, God's son, leaves the age of Pisces, Jesus, it will enter the age of Aquarius, as Aquarius follows Pisces in the Precession of the Equinoxes. All Jesus is saying is that after the Age of Pisces will come the Age of Aquarius. Now, we have all heard about the end times and the end of the world..."

and so on.

Capital R Retarded.

qualx, Saturday, 7 October 2017 05:04 (eight years ago)

all those ILXoRz who lured me out to Seattle that one year. 2007? was it that long ago? that totally had a profound effect on me. it really helped build my confidence when i really needed that in a serious way. just getting on a plane was huge for me. flying and public speaking! two of my biggest fears. everything about it was some sort of step forward. it was hard and so rewarding. there are too many people to even name who led me there and who i was fortunate enough to spend time with. but i never would have done anything like that in a million years without the encouragement of the people here. it was so scary and it really did change me. everyone was so nice. ned has always been so encouraging and positive over the years toward me and i really appreciate that so much. it means a lot. i feel the same way about filthy phil freeman putting me in that book of his. that was also huge and a lifeline to a wider world that i needed desperately at the time. it also taught me that i could do better work than i thought i could. again, a push forward. EVERYONE i've met from here - and i've met dozens of people irl - has been SO nice and funny and fun to talk to. no exceptions. so many smart people. i always feel enriched after a conversation with them. i even get to hang out with tarfumes the escape goat sometimes. and learn new keith moon info.

oh actually one that i'm not ashamed to say is that BradNelson has introduced me to like, a half a dozen of my favourite albums of the last few years, and in the process has gotten me to rethink and ultimately completely rewire my tastes in rock music, in a way not unlike how '07 era teenybopper/r&b crews did

frogs, clouds, nxd, brim, and everyone else on the vaporwave thread. I salute you

calstars, Saturday, 7 October 2017 21:29 (eight years ago)

Number one for me is Aldo who challenged me on eating cheese on some terrible old thread about vegetarianism, and because my arguments just felt like rote bullshit, it led to me doing some actual research and really questioning my dietary choices, and as a result of that I went vegan. Have now been vegan for over ten years and apart from improving my health and introducing me to a shitload of excellent new foods, it really fucking rearranged my head and made me question so much more about the assumptions that my worldview was built on. My wife went vegan too so her life was changed as well. Maybe this would've happened anyway, but Aldo's was the hand that gave me the final shove through the door. Kind of ironic that he's a meat-eater I guess.

That aside there's a whole bunch of other people that have made me just plain *think more* and I'm really grateful for that. Don't want to start listing people cos there are many, but I do want to give a shout out to Kate and Lex, both of whose presence I miss

Feeling this, and perpetually in the midst of therapeutic engagement as a result of feeling this.

There are lots of folks here who have transformed me. Just being here for a decade and a half and engaging with a gaggle of people who have demanded more of me than I might've demanded of myself in isolation has been transformative. I know I'm pretty much a gag poster to those who even notice my presence, but I'm undoubtedly a better writer and a better thinker and, yes, even a better person because I've spent an unreasonable amount of time in this particular haunt rather than any number of other online hellscapes. I'm genuinely grateful for this place and pretty much everyone who engages with this place.

You must separate the two plies, then unwind just the outer ply once, after which, the perforations will line up properly. This works! So thank you, long ago poster, for changing this aspect of my life.

Started reading sf again after decades-long layoff, so my first instinct was to say Martin Skidmore. but I was leery of going for the Get Out Your Handkerchiefs effect, and it was really him and sinkah along with that other Sluglord Tracer Hand. Damn you, Tracer Hand!. Oh yeah, James Morrison and Shakey too.

DJP and Kate for reasons shared with a lot of people above. Tom Ewing, Mark Sinker for lessons I've not learned well enough.

Also J0hn D, which is kind of cheating - but him as he appears on ILX and on his blog is also an excellent context for him on record, like having a commentary track.

If I had to pick one though, it'd probably be Starry Sarah - I met a bunch of ILX people at Glastonbury about 15 years ago, and she was the one that was delighted to sit around and talk about the Moldy Peaches and Pokemon, and from that came friendships with most of them, and eventually moving over here, which has been very very transformative.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 13 October 2017 14:22 (eight years ago)

Kate! Yes, definitely.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 13 October 2017 14:52 (eight years ago)

About 12 years ago somebody on ILM posted "In Brooklyn" by Al Stewart on a "great lost songs" thread. Since then it's basically become me and partner's "relationship song" and thinking about it is a great reminder of being younger and sillier in our twenties.

Weirdly the lyrics are totally sour! We just like the jauntiness.

Also the book recommendations on ILB basically run my life now.

My answer is anyone who ever forcefully disagreed with, or even ridiculed my posts when I first started posting here. At first I would become very upset, especially when the pushback came from posters I respected. But after a while I learned to roll with it and not try to win people's approval all the time. I value the way this site has pushed me to change my mons on a number of issues, but more than that I appreciate how, by posting here, I learned to stick to my guns when I felt that that was the right thing to do.

I would say DJP and Mordy are the posters most likely to challenge the way I think about something on the non-musical side, and on ILM I would say similar things about Ned, xhucx, and probably a few other people from the anti-rockist contingent.

Treeship, Friday, 13 October 2017 15:37 (eight years ago)

There are so many here. So many, and I'm worried about missing anyone but off the top of my head:

Sick Mouthy offered me my first writing gig back in 2004
Branwell, despite falling out with me a huge number of times, did make me reassess my position on a number of issues. That could be said for other ilxors, Lex, DJP and many others.
FGTI gave me some fantastic advice about songwriting once which I'll never forget
And then there are those who have either inspired me a great deal, offered advice and opinions, or just helped me in my life with friendly encouragement, among them Le Bateau Ivre, imago, Rev, Ned, marcos, wins, NickB, chewshabadoo, M4rk H3st3r (can't remember what handle he goes by now), Johnny Fever, man alive, Kerr, Gravel Puzzleworth, seandalai, Moka, emil.y, Michael B, Drugs A . Money. Like the latter says upthread, the Outloud chats were so so great and I miss them a lot

i keep writing tl;drs (true love doctors) here and then deleting them, so instead this is the quick summary: ilx is more of a "community" for me than just about any irl community. in certain ways that is endlessly rewarding, and i don't even want to know how many times i click the ilx bookmark everyday. it is weird. it's too much. when i think about transformative effects it's not so much one person or group of people that i think of, or a specific thread, but just the overall influence of what i'm reading and thinking and talking about all the time with you all. true <3 doctors

with all that said, big ups to pplains. dr casino said something about pplains' "finest hour" on the steely dan thread today, and my first thought was "more like pplains finest year, with 8760 one-hour blocks, each one featuring a pplains greatest hit. god, 8760 hours isn't really that long for a year, i really expected the number to be higher."

also: if you're having a bad day and need something to lift your spirits, check out the only song by The Bonzai Predicament. it is really good:

I don't know whose name is Abby, all I was trying to say was that name never came up on here, the dropped 'Abby' only made me wonder 'who?', and one might not use it that freely if the person itself didn't use it that way either on here.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 30 October 2017 23:57 (eight years ago)

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 00:03 (eight years ago)

agree that "let's not do that going forward" is a good way to proceed wrt that issue

idk the answer to this or that it has been one person so much as a community presence for me (like KM)
it's a place i can go reliably, a place i can jib jab about stuff without much concern because no one can see me or know who i am? ilx can be relaxing in that way (except for when it's being toxic or i follow the wrong threads) + it's also a place where people like talking about music. you don't get that everywhere, or the people who like the same music i do or are interested in music the way i am aren't always compelled to talk with me about it in person (more now than before, but it was a long time between high school/college and a time when any of my close personal friends cared about music as much as i did)

i will say that i have gotten positive vibes from all ilxors i have met irl
and there have been quite a few!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 00:07 (eight years ago)

i have gotten positive vibes from all the vast majority of ilxors
it needed to be corrected and i am not interested in talking about it

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 00:10 (eight years ago)

If now it comes across as if I am berating you, of all people, that is totally not what I intended! Just thought the transition from "we sure miss horseshoe" to "yeah Abby is the best" felt weird to me (which wasn't you even doing that in the first place).

Ilx is totally relaxing, a safe space for me too, very much so, and it should stay that way. I met good friends on here, stayed at ilxors places abroad, but don't get called by my first name on here because I don't use it as a dn. And that is awesome.

So ilx is awesome, all positive vibes for me for so many reasons. And it should stay that way imo, is what I meant. Without calling users by their real name when they themselves haven't used that.

But don't get me wrong, all <3 to you LL. 'LL' is fine.
