Madchen, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Daddy, daddy cool!

Madchen, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lupo is kind of bonkers, at least for a car ad.

mark s, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I quite like that headache pill advert...where the mother is dancing about in her undies.

james, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That Dandy Warhols cell phone ad almost makes up for how much I hate them and how much I wish we had ads of any decent note in this gawdforsaken marketing tundra.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Zest Soap one with the elevator armpit sniffing scene. The way the woman meekly yet lovingly says "hello" just makes it, baby. Do they have this ad anywhere else in the world?

Arthur, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Johnny Vegas and his wool monkey cohort, since the monkey talks exactly like Sideshow Mel.

Al, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

MONKEY!!!!! shurely the only way to get people to switch to digital, stuff the acres of football, 7 zillion channels etc etc GIVE THEM A STUFFED TOY!!!!!!

get yer monkey cheque book out!!

carsmilesteve, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Saw one from somewhere in which a large-muscled lovable-lug-type black man shaves with a particular sort of razor, puts on a suit and tie, picks up his briefcase, walks into the bedroom of his very young, sleeping daughter, puts his cheek against hers, and gives her a kiss. She says: "Bye, mom."

I thought this was a pretty great commercial.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why is ska the new ad soundtrack of choice? Is it the jauntiness?

Ellie, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

LC sez DG = ITV Digital monkey. Hmph.

DG, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Marks and Spencer - is this the first time that they have used TV to advertise? I can't remember any before.

Jonnie, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jonnie, there is a particular reason you like that advert though isn't there? a certain Mrs Slim perhaps?

chris, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well there is that too, but I am intrigued by M&S having to advertise on telly now. God knows why but I am.

Jonnie, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

these threads qualify you all for 24 hr mime gulags near slough.

Ed, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Lupo ad rules 'cos it reminds me of going down the greyhound track at Romford.

Trevor, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Adam and Joe are on the Virgin mobile advert! However I don't particularly like the rest of the Virgin brand (my god, another one for the worst advert thread: their post office thing!) so hrmph chiz. I also admit to larffing at the Post Office thread with Elton John getting some PUPPIES in brown wrapping paper oh whot joy! I also like the advert for the Winnie the Pooh sleep soother and think more adverts should be shot from a babies eye point of view eg the Pampers ad. Also, who can forget the classic I'M A BIG KID LOOK WHAT I CAN DO! I CAN WEAR BIG KIDS PANTS TOO! tra la la Huggies pullups, I was almost tempted to get a pair myself.

Sarah, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was an advert on the other Saturday morning for a doll with a cock that wees. It made me shriek.

Jonnie, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BABY WEE WEE!! And the cock is detatchable for toddler genderswitch action.

Tom, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does '..of the moment' preclude the Guiness adverts? I'll nominate 'Surfer' anyway. I know its the obvious choice (No. 1 of all time etc) but it is great. Jonathan Glazer said he made a whole feature film on only slightly more money than that 30-second ad cost! I also read a Creative Review article on how it was made and it was awe-inspiring. The work that went into it...

Will, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The surfer ad is my grandad's favourite ad. He will be 89 on Monday. Grandad, grandad cool!

Madchen, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The curent trend to have several subtly different versions of the same ad (Nivea, the one where the bloke sings "Can't take my eyes off you" down the phone and wakes up with a donkey in his room, etc.) - classic or dud? Sort of classic, but they could do so much more with it. Looking forward to seeing it done really well.

Mark C, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will, that surfer ad is the worst in the world ever. Yeah nice horse effects but there's something about it that just sets my spine on edge - maybe the dead hand of J.Glazer who has also made all the world's worst music videos.

Tom, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surfer ad = so vile it makes me ill, my ex had it on his PC and would insist on playing it OVER and OVER and OVER to me in an attempt to brainwash me into liking it. As I said on the other ad thread the Persil Capsyoules advert is the best advert in the world ever.

Emma, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm with the anti-surfers posse on this. And it was surely a fix that it won the best ad ever.

Your ex sounds like a prize arsehole, Emma.

RickyT, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well duh, RickyT, he is my ex = he is asshole. He was also the one who taped Eno for me.

Emma, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best Guiness ad is the dreaming competition. It reminds me of my grandad who was 90 this year. He can't see a fig anymore, yet he still has the best dreams evah. He says that nature has compensated for his physical shortcomings by opening his third eye - every night he sees in glorious technicolour, futuristic vistas of alien landscapes, curious semi-prehistoric creatures that attempt to communicate with him in a language he cannot yet fathom, but he's working on it. My grandad would thrash anyone in a dreaming competition anyday.

Trevor, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best Guinness ad is Carsmile Steve. He always looks so jolly with a full pint in front of him.

Tom, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yep, I saw Sexy Beast and it looked right cheap too.

Pete, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, *I* get it! Its 'gang-up on Will day', is it? Hah! Well, I only tried to put forward an opinion! I'm going home now and taking my ball with me. ;-) ;-) ;-)

Seriously, Bet on Black is pretty good too. I love the sense of speed in it. I also like the 'ring of fire' Curry Super Noodles advert.

Will, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Super noodle ads are great. One of my favourites being where the dad blames his baby for getting Mummy's blouse dirty.

Jonnie, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SOopah noodle ads are rubbish and the product is nasty (despite me living on them during my student years). my favourite one is the Pampers ad, where they claim that the nappy soaks up pee and soft poo. what is the deal with that?

katie, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I WANT HAIR

um, and also the timeless Garden Claw- although said Claw is actually rendered useless now, because MiniClaw is best for potted plants (and clawing people's faces off), and the Garden Claw Gold is adjustable, for the taller or shorter gardener. I guess GC original is for the skanks who can't afford an adjustable claw. Hmm.

Oh, and that Steam Clean one (can't remember the actual product) where the glass is so clean Mr Moustachio Man walks into the door when he forgets his briefcase, oh the hilarity. It's not just for glass, though, it can be used on ovens, kitchen surfaces etc, it's great. No really it is.

I hate Lupo.

emil.y, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The impersonating a tiger frosties ad. tho best ad of all time is the john west salmon kick-boxing bear.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

do you think the ad men had been playing tekken as kuma? HE'S JUST A GRATE BIG BEAR!!

carsmilesteve, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lupo also has a stencil-spray graffitti dimension to its campaign: perhaps they are targeting joyriders?! It's actually not all that, except insofar as it's so anti anything that car ads are....

Sexy Beast = OK, esp.Ben motherfucking Kingsley giving only good perf. of life.

Surfer ad = greatly hated by me, I think largely becuz of "the fat-hearted drummer hit the beat with all his might" etc, which inflames the anti-hornby in me for some reason, and say YAY for mathematicians w.drum machines etc etc

Ad I quite like has two cartoon tots eating "junk" straight from a rubbish bin, then they stop and have some hovis.

mark s, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
yes, I like that one.

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

what is the name of the japanese (chinese?) style of puppetry used in it?

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
saw that new one that uses Nouvelle Vague's I Melt With You about half a dozen times last night. think it was mobile phone related, er, t-mobile.

there's another one for boot's cosmetics that rips off a bjork video something rotten but still manages to be entertaining. again, good choice of music and clever visuals and no real hard sell.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 1 April 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

Advanced Hair Studio! A bizarre and extremely long infomercial which only ever appears in the wee hours of the morning, presumably to target some kind of demographic of balding insomniacs. Various sporting stars of yesteryear extoll the virtues of a dubious-looking hair regrowth process. My favourite is the guy who demonstrates the strength of his "new" hair by doing lots of vigorous sporty things like heading a football, sailing a yacht etc, and at one point letting a guy grab hold of his fringe and yank it in a truly wince-inducing way.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Friday, 1 April 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

it's all about the toyota verso advert with the women dancing on the beach

and i need to know what the song is

i did find out months ago but i forgot and essentially want some one to yousenditme...

secondhandnews, Friday, 1 April 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Either the phones 4 u one with the bloke in the window and the fat kid in the street with megaphones, or (and I'm probably in a minority of one here) the latest Michael Winner one ("it's not a real mouse").

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Saturday, 2 April 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

me again 8)

the Kia Sportage advert with the hoarde of little plasticene characters chasing the 4x4 full of Cthulian passengers.

ha, the mouse that roared.

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

wrong thread for this i know but i just want to say how much i hate the Sainsbury's (i think) 'little tiny bill' one - the same song was used for Domestos (BIG BAD DOM) in the 80s.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Worst TV adverts of the moment

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

The last advert I really liked was the one for throat lozenges where the lumberjack tries to shout out "Timber!" but can't and the so tree falls on some other dude

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

One of the reasons I miss being in Japan: their ads. Far cuter than ours.

nathalie's body's designed for two (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

that new one for plasters with added silver (wtf?) but only for the spangly noise that the plaster makes whan it talks.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

I love the ads for Sonic drive-ins with the freeze-frame and punch SFX at the payoff. Those things are funny and well-edited.

Truckdrivin' Buddha (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Rock. I hate those Sonic ads. Though I am curious about just what exactly that short-haired red-stater wife did in New Orleans.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Otherwise, "Um, you look pretty?" THWACK! = Dud.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Shatner -- what a total fucking whore, btw -- sure looks puffy even when they digitally helped him back onto the Enterprise bridge in that direcTV spot. (his last head toss in the elevator is admittedly perfect)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, well, we bought those All-Bran oaty bakes he's been peddling, and I can tell you if he thinks they're healthy, I may have found part of his problem. They're 27% sugar. It's like eating sugary biscuits for breakfast. Bleuch.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

What about Ray Winstone whoring it about with some new oaty breakfast cereal?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, u lucky Brits. Ray Winstone commercials!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

I revived this thread just to talk about the return of Jonny Vegas and MUNKEH! And what should be the first two posts that appear before my eyes?

Johnny Vegas and his wool monkey cohort, since the monkey talks exactly like Sideshow Mel.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

I felt a bit... emotional... when I saw that advert!

OK it was PMT time, but still! Well done PG Tips, JOB DONE etc etc.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

*chorus* "overtired..."

fuck i love them northern lads and their comedy parents.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

I do too! Can the naysayers explain why they don't?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

It's like telling the same joke over and over again, which merited a "heh, that's quite clever" the first time but rapidly becomes an irritant.

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

I like Pedigree Chum ads because they have dogs in 'em.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

They're solid nourishment.

vita susicivus (blueski), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

the safira advert is also a rip of those two kids talking about insurance using the voices of fry and laurie, oh, years ago. ("choccy topping? oh, go on...")

My Koogy Weighs A Ton (koogs), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I remember that. But "overtired" is funny, where "choccy topping? oh, go on..." is not.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

"oh, they're tired"! on second thoughts let's not start that again.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

It's not blimmin' "oh they're tired". The intonation would make no sense, and anyway "overtired" is exactly what parents say when kids are acting up and anyway they clearly say "overtired".

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

It's not blimmin' "overtired". The intonation would make no sense, and anyway "oh they're tired" is exactly what parents say when kids are acting up and anyway they clearly say "oh they're tired".

hohoho.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

it is overtired.

> But "overtired" is funny

even after they've trotted it out for the third time?

(besides, the 'choccy topping' was funny. they were kids, talking about insurance like grownups = juxtaposition. then he throws in the choccy topping and the juxtaposition suddenly has juxtaposition. minds are blown.)

(or do i mean 'irony'?)

My Koogy Weighs A Ton (koogs), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I remember that. But "overtired" is funny, where "choccy topping? oh, go on..." is not.

otm

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

The point is "tired" is just tired, with all the usual connotations of lethargy and sleepinesss. The parental theory is that when children are in need of a sleep, they often instead become fraught and badly behaved. They are "overtired".

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, Alba's tired.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

if you're (over)tired you surely don't have the energy to behave badly. it suggests some other deficiency is at work.

vita susicivus (blueski), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

i love this idea that once you're a parent you gain access to all these absurd terms unknown to anyone else.

vita susicivus (blueski), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

omg, someone in my office just said he was 'overhungry'.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not a parent! I just remember being a kid and being told I was overtired and disagreeing fractiously with the assessment.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

You are overhungry -> you are too hungry to eat! I have known this.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

I always thought it was "Oh, they're tired". And it seems even the people who made the advert aren't sure!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

The people who made the advert are sure. The letter at the end is signed by Franco Zeffirelli and is a joke.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

i know that feeling too but that's not what he meant.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

For anyone whose parents used the phrase overtired when they were kids you KNOW with the pure truth of a billion universes that they're saying "overtired".

Overhungry is a nice word though.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

The difficulty parents face is when a fractious child is up past its bedtime and has pals over. Is is overtired or just showing off in front of its friends?

Ah I see. Oh well.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

The latter I think trumps the former - he may *be* overtired - to be revealed once everyone has settled down - but the need to impress means it's simply wilful bad behaviour and overexcitement.

The old pencilly animated Aquafresh one which they're re-screening at the moment. Now that's a proper jingle.

Wingwalker (1977), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

vita susicivus (blueski), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

Dear Mr ****,

Thank you for your e-mail received by this office on 5 September 2005,
regarding the recent Vauxhall Zafira TV advert.

As requested, I can confirm the last word in the advert is 'over tired'. I
trust this resolves your query, however, should you require any further
information, please do not hesitate to contact us again on 01582 427200, or
by return e-mail.

I cannot believe so many people have a) never heard this term and b) believe that you have to actually be a parent in order to hear and remember the daft things that parents say to excuse their inability to shut their children up.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

hush now, or our screens will be once more overrun with mash potato eating robots and 'Just-So' Jones.

speaking of which, the new cgi gary lineaker advert was interesting.

My Koogy Weighs A Ton (koogs), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

My parents used to use the word 'overtired' and yet I've *always* heard 'oh, they're tired' on the advert. It never even occurred to me they might be saying 'overtired'. It's a shite advert anyway. I like the IKEA one they're showing in Sweden where the lady keeps saying OCH.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

It's so obviously 'overtired' that it had never even occurred to me that anyone could hear it as anything else. You 'oh, they're tired' people are mental. Did you hear the PG Tips Chimps saying 'it's the paste!' or that flymo cricket bloke saying 'it's a lot less hotter with an otter'?

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, Rock. I hate those Sonic ads. Though I am curious about just what exactly that short-haired red-stater wife did in New Orleans.

I am vindicated by the fact that "btw XXXX, you look very pretty" is now an ILX meme.

I love the Geico caveman commercials. The latest one with the therapist is priceless.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fovgkvX2H08

I'm surprised not many people have mentioned the Mitsubishi ads featuring The Fall; I'd have figured a lot of you would've been falling over yourselves with excitement over that.

Me, I'm bemused by the Buzzcocks playing on a commercial for the AARP (something I wasn't anticipating until 2027 at least). According to an article I just read about it, it's supposed to be part of an effort to court future members of the AARP currently in their 30s and 40s, but -- Buzzcocks + AARP currently do not compute in my brain.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 25 June 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

There was a piece about it in the Independent today as well. I've not seen it.

accentmonkey, Monday, 25 June 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

You can just click the link above :)

I can't find a a link to it in the Independent, was it part of a bigger article. Do you have a link?

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Stand down...I've found it.
http://news.independent.co.uk/media/article2702428.ece
I agree with whoever Claire Beale is...This is sweet, funny, really quite bizarre. I wonder if it'll sell any shreddies though?

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

Added bonus! On that article there is a link for the fantastic fabulous old Go To Work On An Egg ads featuring Tony Hancock.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 25 June 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

it also strikes me as the kind of thing the trading standards people don't like - they (maybe apocryphally) made them change the irn bru slogan 'made in scotland from grrdrrs' because irn bru didn't actually have any girder content.

koogs, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 09:42 (eighteen years ago)

Recently saw a nice ad for a storage company - have only caught it once. Shows a room with all its contents going back and forth like waves on the seashore.

Zoe Espera, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

as a kid i think i thought Grrdrrs was just some guy who made the Irn Bru. it's not like we drank it and thought 'mmm you can really taste the metal beams'.

blueski, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like the Shreddies ad - trying too hard to think of wacky concept to explain how they're made. Like that Coca-Cola bottle advert. Cease this shallow pretense you additive-peddling con artistes.

blueski, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

You can just click the link above :)

It's not the same as seeing it on telly though.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

Shreddies ad is sweet.

I'm liking the 'April Showers' one, looks like it was shot in Scotland somewhere, can't recognise where though.

The Skoda 'cake' one was good the first few times but has started annoying me.

The Nissan Qashquai 'skateboard' one is cool too.

*rumpie*, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

I'm liking the 'April Showers' one, looks like it was shot in Scotland somewhere, can't recognise where though.

I like it too, but it's one of those ads that irritates me, because it looks like someone shot it as part of their show reel or something, and then they basically stuck the product name on the end, almost as an afterthought.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

I know what you mean but there's something about knitting a shreddie that just makes me smile. Also I like to eat shreddies so I'm biased towards it already. They could have an ad with "Buy a packet of shreddies" on the screen for 10 seconds and I'd still go, 'good ad, I think I will'.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

Can't stop singing the "April Showers" tune in my head now - aaaaaaaaaarrrrrgh!

Tom D., Tuesday, 26 June 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

> The Skoda 'cake' one was good the first few times but has started annoying me.

the two bits of genius in this advert are the golden syrup 'oil' and the wobbly jelly tail-lights.

koogs, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

something annoys the shit out of me on that skoda advert, and i don't know what. it's got something to do with the smart arse looks off the people at the end.

Finally Volvic have made a water ad I like. The Volcano vs Alan the T-Rex are just daft enough to make me smile!

Much better than the Evian Busby Berkeley Babies. It struck me that to remove the genitalia on all these babies, some ad exec would have had to concentrate on these areas for a couple of days in an FX suite, which make sit all the more creepy.

Pete, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

if you made a Skoda cake you are entitled to feel pleased with yourself. kudos to them i say.

of course it makes you think 'must eat cake' rather than 'must buy Skoda' but i'm sure they realised that.

Surely he's the dude from Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, no?

Matt Berry is his name, IMDB reveals.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

I mean of the dude in Darkplace. I don't know if the volcano voice is him. I like that ad as well.

it's the zoo owner from boosh.

koogs, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

but the volvic advert annoys me due to their careful use of language - there's a very obvious fudge word in there so that they aren't implying that volvic makes you alert.

it also sucks because it's an ad for water.

koogs, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

it's the zoo owner from boosh.

ah yes - not the US zookeeper but the other guy right? i think he also appeared in Roman's Empire WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DID NOT WATCH THAT?

You know, I still like the Harvey Keitel "Direct Line" Mr Wolf ads, but he come over too avuncular to be truly threatening when he says "It's time to put you to sleep", just before he produces a flask of cocoa.

Maybe for the next ad phase, they should get Javier Vardim to recreate his character from "No country for old men", then the bods looking for cheaper insurance would look genuinely terrified when he said "hmm, heads or tails?"
