In the 70s Hoges VERY occasionally scored a bulls-eye (with about the same frequency as you'd expect of a blind darts player) but the rest of the time it was pretty puerile stuff. Sort of Bazza meets Benny Hill. And as an Oz kid living in England at the time of the Bazza films, DGMS.

Actually I recant on the last one, I reckon it's pretty much true for everywhere.

Nellie (nellskies), Monday, 8 November 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I grew up watching Eddie Charlton on Pot Black with Ray Reardon, John Spencer, a very young Alex Higgins, Fred? Davis and some Canadian called Cliff someone who looked a bit like Sonny (as in Cher) and was always either brilliant or awful. I remember the booming voice of the in-house announcer, in contrast to the whisper of the TV commentator who always seemed worried about distracting the players (Ted Lane?). Eddie wasn't as flamboyant as some of the younger players but he was always very definitely the master of his craft.

A sad time for Australian sport continues. Keith Miller, Johnny Warren amd now Eddie Charlton. RIP Eddie.
