People that like the series MAD TV are too braindead to even take seriously

I will not hide my identity. I am not joking. This is the most unforgivable shit on TV. If you watch and enjoy this show, I do not want to know you.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Best show on t.v. blows SNL away without even trying. and has been doing it for years.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Brothers, sisters, come together!

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never watched more than a sketch at a time, because it seems so forced and unfunny.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pretty shitty.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

What if I watch it while seething with rage?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

broad ethic stereotype shit you don't even have to understand english to know it's crap. a step below making shadow puppets.

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ethic s/b ethnic

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

It is very forced... that's the word. It's like they're trying to make fun of themselves while trying to make fun of something else, and none of it ends up working. The impressions are uniformly terrible, the writing is insipid, the comedians are anal leakage. And oh yeah, the ethnic jokes! Hummus breath HO HO HO!!!

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had too much coffee.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

black people actually get to be "people" every week on Mad T.V. instead of always having to be "black" people like on SNL. Maybe someday SNL will stop seeing the very sight of a black person as some radical thing that needs to be pointed out with a heavy-handed ham-fist. but that's for another thread. It's possible that Lorne is still shocked by the very idea of black people.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It's true that the black people on MadTV are given an equal opportunity to be just as terribly terribly unfunny as the white people. For that, I applaud it (golf clap).

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The skit I saw last night consisted of a white woman's cellphone going off continuously in the middle of funeral. Everyone else in the funeral is black. No jokes/laughter whatsoever. Not even anything racial. Effect: zilch. Maybe this shit is funnier when they export it to the third world or something.

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It's often hilarious, but it isn't for snooty folks who don't enjoy broad, physical humor. They take more chances then most t.v. shows. They aren't afraid of failure. unlike SNL, a show that writhes in agony underneath its own flop-sweat. Mad t.v. would be even better live. Too bad they don't do that.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Even if the only good things on it were Will Sasso's Randy Newman and Kenny Rogers impressions it would still be better than SNL.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

We should have a thread about black people on SNL. I've always thought it's remarkable how consistent their agenda is. You watch "classic" skits like Eddie Murphy in whiteface, experiencing how craaaaazy all the white people get as soon as the last black guy gets off the boss (and at the bank: "Sure, you're white - take all the cash you want!") - exaggerating the issue of "white privilege" to a comical degree, in order to laugh it away and deny it. And whenever I see a little snippet of the show now - they're still doing that!

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

But I can definitely see how boring people could hate Ms.Swan and Stewart. You have to have a taste for the absurd. Or a taste for Mad Magazine for that matter! It's juvenile, puerile stuff! If you consider yourself an adult, go no further.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoy broad, physical humor, but I still think it's pretty stupid.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Mad T.V. is just way more enlightened. And healthier too!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just being a stinker, Luna. I don't really think you are boring if you hate Mad T.V. Lots of people hate silly, juvenile humor.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

But that guy who plays Stewart (Michael McDonald?) - every single one of his characters is exactly the same, some shrill, obnoxious wiseass who says "inappropriate" things very very loudly in a "funny" voice (all of which sound pretty much the same). It's somewhat amusing for like one sketch but that's about it.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Good stupid humor is secretly smart. MadTV is just stupid.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

nick otmfm.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean it IS "stupid"! You know? It wants to be. Mission accomplished.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Mad T.V. is smarter than you think.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well color me fooled.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

that'd be a good title for a show

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm being harsher than I actually feel.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's one thing I like about Mad T.V. And I'm sorry to keep bringing up SNL, but it's such an obvious horse to whip and I'm nothing if not obvious: In the 10 years or whatever that Mad T.V. has been on there hasn't been one cast member on that show who hasn't been willing to look silly/like a buffoon/like an idiot. I respect that. On the other hand, almost NOBODY on SNL is willing to look that silly. They are ruled by fear. A lot of people on t.v. are. They are looking ahead. Mad T.V. provides a healthy dose of anarchy. Will Ferrell shoulda been on Mad T.V.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

You're not being harsh enough.

xpost

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I halfway agree with you re: SNL, scott, though I think Amy Poehler and (sometimes) Will Forte are willing to go nuts for the benefit of a sketch.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm being harsher than I actually feel.

I know I am.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't say that i have watched much mad tv, but what i have seen i was not impressed with. and if it is so much superior to snl (which sadly isn't saying much these days) who are some funny people who launched their careers on the show? i can't think of anyone, but i am pretty ignorant on the cast, so maybe someone else can help me out.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ms. Swan can stink up the joint, as can Stewart, as can any recurring character. Will Sasso, however, is comedy gold. Also, David Herman (AKA Michael Bolton from Office Space). Also, ARTIE LANGE.

SNL ain't so bad, and Mad TV ain't so good.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

If you want real comedy gold nowadays, you have to watch cartoons.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

MadTv still sucks. Saying that it's great because it's better than SNL is smoke and mirrors.

Mad TV is just as guilty as SNL of inventing an annoying character and beating it into the ground over and over and over again. Nothing makes me reach for the remote faster than seeing that retarded Stewart character or that old lady "oh, dear, baby!" person appearing on screen accompanied by the studio audience applauding as if Fonzie just walked onto the set or something.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

when I used to have a TV I would literally CRINGE when madtv was on comedy central. Not that new SNL is much better, but jesus christ it is terrible.

Nowdays I'm quite glad I don't subject myself to that garbage box.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Nowdays I'm quite glad I don't subject myself to that garbage box."

see, now you were never gonna like Mad T.V. I guess that's what I was trying to say and still be polite: It ain't for everybody.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Nowdays I'm quite glad I don't subject myself to that garbage box."

I mean, no offense, but you sound like Snooty McHuffington when you write something like that. And Snooty ain't Mad T.V.'s audience.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What is their audience? Siberian laborers?

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

And don't get me wrong, I'm as snooty as the next guy, but the point is this: Mad T.V. is SUPPOSED to be a stupid live-action cartoon. And as such, I think it succeeds brilliantly.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"What is their audience? Siberian laborers?"

The young and the young at heart. Or the immature at heart at any rate.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i ain't no snooty mchuffington, but i know this:

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Good sweet Christ, yes.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Guys, guys, everyone has their cause celebre, and MadTV is scott's, so give him a break.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't take Jerry Lewis haters seriously, sorry. It's all coming together now. Was fun snatched from your grasp as a child!!??

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

snooty mchuffington!!!!!111

hahahahaha

also, yeah, I guess I'm not their intended audience.
I felt like I wasn't really any show's intendent audience in my final days of having television though, so I honestly don't miss it.
All I would watch was adult swim and the occasional science show (ooh, nova!)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

he liked chapelle? i like chapelle. i didn't always like the same stuff as goat guy. he could be prickly about stuff. he looooooved bob & ray but had no time for nichols & may, you know? he was a hard nut to crack.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i think goat dude is probably more of a purist than me. i rarely agreed with him about metal. in fact, all the "experts" on metal on ilm, phil freeman, ian christe, siegbran, john, all have waaaaaay different likes/dislikes than i do. almost total opposites at times. but i enjoy/enjoyed their posts. i'm easy like that.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

no (well maybe he did who knows) just debating mad tv vs snl is crazy. they have their moments and these moments usually have more to do with the performer than the premise of the sketch or the writing but man by and large it's dead air and tossing off catchphrases hoping one will take. mad maybe worse who knows, snl being live adds a charge in that every ten years something crazy will happen (even if it's just the musical act) plus they're a more well oiled machine, if both are mediocre 95% of the time snl has honed that mediocrity down, like a shark. plus snl will kiss celeb ass as much as madtv but at least it will be a-listers, madtv will fawn over mykelti williamson or somebody like they're fucking deniro. either way chapelle renders both options a moot point right now thank god.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not talking specifically "mad TV," just in general that "snooty mchuffington" was so mountaingoatse it HURT

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, forgetting SNL altogether, I don't think Mad T.V. is mediocre though, Blount. I've always enjoyed it. I haven't been watching as much the last year or two though cuz i'm an old daddy who gets up really early with junior. And it can certainly be bad at times. The newer cast members aren't really my faves.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I can only remember seeing one skit and it was a Randy Newman parody. I couldn't believe I was seeing a Randy Newman parody on Fox and loved the show for it. I think I blocked out every other skit I've seen.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If I bring up SNL a lot it's just cuz they are both sketch shows and Mad T.V. is on till midnight on saturdays. And many saturdays I have gladly missed a half hour of SNL.

and that stewart guy creeps me out, i admit. but not nearly as much as jimmy fallon did. that's it: mad tv is better than snl because they have never had anybody as useless as fallon (or colin quinn for that matter) (or joe piscopo give or take his "i love rock n roll" sinatra bit) on there.

elrod hendrix, Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Can anyone give a good reason why Mad TV is a quality show without mentioning SNL?

I do like their animated parodies. The Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer doing Scorsese took out a few ribs. Same thing goes for Davey Berkowitz and Goliath.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I would accept nothing but hatred for Mad T.V. from you, Alex. Nothing else would do.

I think I'd hate it if I was forced to watch it. I just find it more depressing than anything else. I mean, it's entirely stupid, lowest common denominator humor.

SNL hasn't really been worth watching, meanwhile, in eons.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, it's entirely stupid, lowest common denominator humor.

That's not even the problem. I mean, I chuckled sometimes during the American Pie movies (and yes, I've seen them all by now, on cable). It's poorly executed stupid, lowest-common-denominator humor. It's stupid done by people who have know idea how to do stupid, and every second of it is like needles in my ass.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Blue Collar TV is funnier. I mean that.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

who are some funny people who launched their careers on the show? i can't think of anyone, but i am pretty ignorant on the cast, so maybe someone else can help me out.

Orlando Jones went on to become the original 7-up guy and has had so fairly big movie roles (I don't think he was on the show for very long though).

Tim Smro, Thursday, 11 November 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Mad TV did a great Charlie's Angels parody that involved three "sexy" female PIs working undercover at a hot dog mall kiosk. Alex Borstein (aka LOIS FROM "FAMILY GUY"), Nicole Sullivan and Deborah Wilson are three of the funniest human beings alive.

Kenan (kenan), Thursday, 11 November 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to see Mad TV live, they'd be able to do it easy because they've memorized their lines for the most part. Try looking at SNL sometime, how rarely they actually look at each other while they're speaking. Or don't. But if even if you do, don't, because it starts getting creepy watching them face away from eeach other into that fake faraway space that actors look which is actually where the cue cards are.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 12 November 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

both SNL and MadTV are abominable. the best currently running comedy that i watch relatively frequently is trailer park boys. and even that show is really slipping. that fucking guy stewart whatever is truly a sign that evil exists and walks among us. so, yes, i agree with this thread title.

j.m. lockery (j.m. lockery), Friday, 12 November 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

MadTV was much better during its first seasons. And Will Sasso saved the series after that. I have to admit the Stewart, Miss Swan and other recurring characters are fucking annoying. But it's funnier than SNL this Days. Well, of course, herpes seems to be funnier than SNL this days.

The Great Cacaman, Saturday, 13 November 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ms. swan is the classicest shit ever.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 24 November 2007 07:54 (eighteen years ago)

I thought anything Paul Vogt did was absolutely hysterical, and Ms. Swan was entertaining too.

MAD tv was a show that had a funny sketch precisely once every year, at most. but SNL isn't exactly much better these days. I love low-brow humor, but I wish they'd both learn "brevity is the soul of wit" when they run sketches that go overlong

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 24 November 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

although the Action jackson sketch was definitely one of the better things they ever did

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 24 November 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

FUCK YOU FOX.
I WAS EXPECTING SEINFELD (BECAUSE I FORGOT IT WAS SATURDAY) AND YOU GIVE ME THIS MAD TV BULLSHIT? FUCK YOU!!!!

I like the way Seward stands up for his love rights on this thread. It makes me want to check out Mad TV again, to see whether I misunderstood something.

moley, Sunday, 4 January 2009 04:57 (seventeen years ago)

OK I just saw this:

To me, this is funny. Perhaps I'm a bit thick?

i like the sketch with bob newhart but i guess that one's not really characteristic of the show

lyndonna larouge (donna rouge), Sunday, 4 January 2009 05:27 (seventeen years ago)

I only get one channel (Fox). When Mad TV comes on, it is the highlight of the weekly television schedule.
