More people went to go see "Seed Of Chucky" than "Ray" this week

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, I was mentioning this on Friday. Here is worcester every theatre in a 10 mile radius of my house has "Seed Of Chucky" playing and not one has anything I would like to see like "I Heart Huckabees", "Motorcycle Diairies" and "Sideways".

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Im also willing to bet that half of this city went to see it as well.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(I mean, I'm not helping things because I went to go see "Garden State" (which, BTW, was AWESOME) at the budget theatre but FOR FUCK'S SAKE PEOPLE A D-MOVIE ABOUT JENNIFER TILLY GETTING FUCKED BY A HOMICIDAL DOLL IS MORE APPEALING THAN A MOVIE ABOUT RAY CHARLES????????????)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently. its things like this that piss me off to no end. it reminds me of the time my wife and i went to see "Punch Drunk Love" when we first moved to Worcester. Half the people walked out in the middle of the movie. We also got to hear numerous complaints like "What the fuck is this shit?" and "I thought this was an Adam Sandler movie?" Of course my wife and I quite enjoyed the movie and were given the stink eye by the mullets as we were talking about how much we liked it on the way out.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

ray's been out for awhile yall, seed of chucky just opened.

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Point taken JB, but that doesn't answer the main issue I have:

What makes you flip through the movie listings and say, "Oh look, the most unnecessary movie made this year opens this week, I should go spend $10 on that"?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

(Yes yes, I R snobby asshole etc)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

IT WAS META AND PEOPLE THOUGHT "THIS COULD BE THE NEW WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE" AND POW! HIT MOVIE

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

john waters was in it too, plus the ads said 'britney spears does not appear in this movie': pow! hit movie

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

plus poor man's team america

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

plus i hear jennifer tilly fuxx a puppet in it

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

PEOPLE THOUGHT "THIS COULD BE THE NEW WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE"

I don't know if I'm amused or horrified.

(xpost okay, I'm horrified)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

seed of chucky + tim allen in ANOTHER xmas movie = end times

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

tim allen in ANOTHER xmas movie

Yeah, I caught the trailer for that and thought, "What, did Santa Clause III: The Final Reckoning not pan out?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Ray Charles, but I have no strong urge to see Ray. I don't know why. Maybe because I've read a few bios already and sorta know the story, and, uh, there's plenty of archival footage of Ray Charles singing Ray Charles songs. But I don't generally like biopics anyway. I didn't see Seed of Chucky, I saw the Incredibles.

Huk-L, Monday, 15 November 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Who the hell goes to Chucky movies???? I'm guessing they're the same sort who think "White Chicks" was the veritable zenith of comedy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(Hi Emily! I would like to apologize for unnecessary liberal-on-liberal bickering and invite you to join with me in reaffirming our cultural superiority over people who like Chuckie movies.)

(Also, Tim Allen eats babies.)

(haha Alex!)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i hear the ray pic gets alot wrong and pretty much ignores his jazz side. whereas maybe the chucky flick gets alot right and doesn't ignore his jizz side?

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Recognizing that "Chucky" movies and their vile ilk are lo.com.denom crapola doesn't make one a snob, it makes one insightful.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(Also, Tim Allen eats babies.)

Fricasseed or just lightly boiled?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Blount, I am going to punch you in the face once I stop laughing.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

this also reminds me of a conversation i had with some friends of mine this weekend. i was talking about the new wes anderson movie as my friend was setting up his surround sound and put in "Gone In 60 Seconds" to test it. I asked him what this shit was and he proceeds to tell me that its one of his favorite movies. He most likely thinks "White Chicks" is the pinnacle of comedy.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i've never seen a chucky flick, he always reminded me way too much of the kid in the problem child flicks (o dear god just typing 'problem child' nearly swelled up enough loathing in me to make me wanna hurl) and i fucking hate wisecracking horror killers*. yay jason! boo freddy!

* except leprechaun. and maybe dr. giggles, i forget.

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and he owns the original chucky vhs.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

* except leprechaun. and maybe dr. giggles, i forget.

Wasn't Frank Gorshin as the Riddler a wisecracking horror killer of sorts?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

with future a's third base coach jim lefebre as one of his henchmen!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Nicholas Cage should put every action script placed before him to "The Rock" test:

1) NC reads the script.
2) NC remembers he was in "The Rock" and will never be in an action film better than that.
3) NC throws away the script.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh good lord, I saw the trailer to National Treasure as well. ARGH.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

harvey keitel's george washington in that!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG now I am conflicted!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

stealing from the DaVinci Code. I hope he has the mullet and shitty accent from "Con Air". Yes, I've seen Con Air. Said friend above owns it.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Con Air" was a big shit sandwich on celluloid.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

was con air when cusack started to suck ballsack?

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

stealing from the DaVinci Code.

That's like saying, "Dude, I ripped off the BEST recipe from Pizza Hut."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

harvey keitel's george washington in that!

Well now I get the image of him giving Benedict Arnold (Jude Law) a Colombian necktie and then telling Jason Lee as Jefferson and Ethan Hawke as Adams what to do with the body.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

or maybe he'll stip butt naked a'la "Bad Lieutenant" and ask some ladies if they want to suck his cock.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Betsy Ross, it's time for you to show how much you love your country."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"I cannot tell a lie! I want you to do me!"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe he'll pimp out a 12 year old dolley madison and then tom paine will get a mohawk and pop a cap in gw's ass and then chucky will come in dressed like an indian and quip 'tea's on me fellas!' and then jizz on everyone. fade to black.

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Bruckheimer is filming that as we speak.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

next week on csi: jamestown

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i am profoundly disturbed by these ideas.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

this is because chucky represents "the other"

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking more "the uncanny" myself.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

then chucky will come in dressed like an indian and quip 'tea's on me fellas!' and then jizz on everyone.

"Tea's on me, fellas! Or is that C?"

Spelling out the joke is FUN! (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

FOR FUCK'S SAKE PEOPLE A D-MOVIE ABOUT JENNIFER TILLY GETTING FUCKED BY A HOMICIDAL DOLL IS MORE APPEALING THAN A MOVIE ABOUT RAY CHARLES????????????

I'd probably go see Seed of Chucky too! Biopics almost without fail bore me to tears.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, on that description chucky wins hands down. who the fuck goes to the movies to self-improve? did any of you like the hours over not another teen movie?

d.arraghmac, Monday, 15 November 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

who the fuck goes to the movies to self-improve?

Who the fuck would go to see a movie (about Ray Charles) as a means of self-improvement?

did any of you like the hours over not another teen movie?

That's a completely loaded question! "The Hours" sucked monkey balls!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd probably go see Seed of Chucky too! Biopics almost without fail bore me to tears.

Speciesist. You'd rather see a biopic on a DOLL is what you mean!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

a biopic on doll sperm that is!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

sadly the car 54 pic is probably the closest we will get to the david johansen story

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Who the fuck would go to see a movie (about Ray Charles) as a means of self-improvement?

merely a comment on the tone of the argument from the anti-chucky side. where is the belief that a ray charles biopic has more merit coming from?

That's a completely loaded question!

okay then- joe dirt was better than american beauty. happy now? :-0

d.arraghmac, Monday, 15 November 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's my position from the anti-Chucky side:

"Ray" looks really interesting and fantastic and features someon whom I think is one of the most underrated actors working today.

"Seed of Chucky" looks like it was made by retarded chimps.

FIN

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Ray was good, but not great. Jamie Foxx, OTH as Ray was great, if not brilliant. Well, okay, brilliant. He was brilliant.

But the Chucky vs. Ray comparison, sadly, is spurious. The people who go to the movies every weekend--on average--will always choose Chucky over Ray. Actually, they chose The Incredibles over everything. Because only--again, on average--and more and more so--only kids go to the theaters. Ray will hold up well on DVD. But, sigh, so will Chucky.

EComplex (EComplex), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Seed of Chucky" looks like it was made by retarded chimps.

so "seed of chucky" is a community scheme project for differently-abled simian empowerment. shame on you for not supporting such a worthy cause.

d.arraghmac, Monday, 15 November 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

For the entire film, the microphone boom—or multiple booms—were visible in virtually every scene. Very visible. Fully visible. Probably in every scene where production sound was gathered.

Hahahahaha! Okay, maybe my thread premise is flawed.

(xpost I am a very bad mang.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

is that re: ray or re:chucky?

d.arraghmac, Monday, 15 November 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

ray was mostly pretty boring, sorry dan! like leon sez, biopics stink

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

also 99% of the time you can blame the projectionist for visible boom mikes

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The quote comes from EComplex's review of Ray. I am a very bad mang because I hate chimps.

(xpost: BUT FUCKING DOLLS IS UNNACCEPTABLE!)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

s1ocki otm, if you could see booms for most of the pic it's the projectionist's fault

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the boom thing was the fault of the IMAX release print/or projectionist. SURELY, pleaseOHplease, for the regular prints and DVDs, that won't be a problem. Will it?

But don't let even that put you off, Dan. If Jamie Foxx is the actor you're referring to as one of the most underrated actors working today--and I agree with you--definitely see it. After seeing Foxx do the role, you'll forever be confused when you see a picture of the real Ray--is that Ray? or Jamie?

AND THE MUSIC ROCKS

EComplex (EComplex), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

BUT FUCKING DOLLS IS UNNACCEPTABLE!

Dolls fucking, on the other hand -- Team America, fuck yeah.

So it's the projectionist I can blame Being John Malkovich on for the boom mikes in nearly the last third of the film when I saw it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

blame the beastie boys

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That would leave me with a hollow feeling.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Ebert goes nuts whenever anyone e-mails to tell him about boom mics being visible -- like at least once a year, he prints one in his column (with the explanation that it's the projectionist's fault) just so no one asks him about it again.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

But what about when they're visible on the televised version of the movie?

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Then it's the TV technician's fault!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, if you can see booms-or dead people--on your tv, it's broken. You should rush out and by a plasma screen. It's the only way, can't you see?

EComplex (EComplex), Monday, 15 November 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Look when your movie is called Seed of Chucky and the tagline is "GET A LOAD OF CHUCKY" and the website features a lot of dripping sperm well you're seriously suggesting that people should have spent money to see Ray (!??!) rather than this?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Bride of Chucky aka Chucky Gets Lucky aka the third par of Ronnie Yu's Bride With White Hair Trilogy was a laff riot.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"deliver us some evil" is also its tagline, which is brilliant

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Really Dan I don't know where you are coming from here.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be more surprised if:

*) Dan hadn't already made it clear that he thinks Jamie Foxx is a fine actor, thus his specific praise of his work in Ali

*) that while Dan is clearly obviously appreciative of things squelchy and ridiculous, like any aficionado he wisely concentrates on that which he finds to be good

*) there is something to be said for the fact that the life story of a guy who helped invent and redirect modern music, all while not being a specific saint and while dealing with shit we'd never have to deal with at all, would be worthy of interest, though Leon's right about the fact that biopics tend to be dreary

(This said, maybe Dan will see Seed and like it anyway.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I can see why someone would like Ray (and I will admit I am curious to see it at some point myself) but Dan not comprehending why people (lots of people, sensible people) would want to see Seed of Chucky is still beyond me.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

To be utterly honest, *I* can't entirely comprehend it, but then again I was never a fan of any of the Chucky movies -- or a lot of horror franchises in general. As it was I ended up seeing the trailer somewhere -- I think it was before Team America -- and thought it was more than enough. John Waters notwithstanding. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

fun goofy horror movie over overlong biopic, it makes sense! not that neccessarily would be my reasoning (though it might be), but i find easy to comprehend how others would be thinkin' that way friday night at the multiplex

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, see, I think I catch it now -- I've never been of the mindset to just go 'see a movie' and only decide when I'm there. Is this actually the way a lot of people think? (I'm quite serious!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it is!

(it's not really material to my point though, these hypothetical people could be poring over the movie listings in the paper when the decision was made as well!)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

hey I thought the plot to seed of chucky was that chucky had a gay son who rejected his evil ways!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

no, he has a gay daughter who manages his campaign

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Slocki otm. While Jamie Foxx is a great actor (I've been saying so since Any Given Sunday, though it is fun to remember he got his start chasing Tommy Davidson around in drag and making ugly faces) the film is directed by a real lame-o, Taylor Hackford, whose last movie was Proof Of Life. These days I'd rather see something I know will reward me on some campy, crass level than risk being bummed out by something that should be great but disappoints. I want to see Ray, I'd probably see it before Chucky, but its highly possible I would check out Chucky with friends first.

m1cc1o, Monday, 15 November 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

in all fairness taylor "hack"ford did rock the campy and crass pretty wickedly in THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

true.

KEANU, I AM YOUR FATHER! JOIN ME ON THE DARK SIDE OF THE ACTOR'S STUDIO! RAAHHHH!!!!

TOMBOT, of course, wins.

Who directed Seed?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 November 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Alan Smithee?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Don Mancini. Sounds made-up.

Almodóvar's Bad Education, an examination on the effect of Franco-era religious schooling and sexual abuse on the lives of two longtime friends, opens this week in New York to qualify for Oscar nominations. It will open nationwide in December.

TOMBOT, Monday, 15 November 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

bad education was awesome

(especially the light-sabre battle)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I can see why someone would like Ray (and I will admit I am curious to see it at some point myself) but Dan not comprehending why people (lots of people, sensible people) would want to see Seed of Chucky is still beyond me.

Because I saw Child's Play 3 and it was soul-crushingly awful to the point where I wanted to eat the television to put both it and myself out of our respective miseries.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

there's nothing more painful than seeing a television in misery

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(hahaha I now have a mental image of a television cowering in the corner screaming "ANNIE NO!!!!!!" while Kathy Bates chases it around with a sledgehammer)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I just saw John Waters in the Barnes & Noble in Chelsea, NYC. Sadly, I only thought to ask him, "Aren't you in 'Seed of Chucky?'" after I came back to work.

Nemo (JND), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ray looks like something my parents would rent for a nice, comfy night on the couch without having to be too interested or moved.

Seed of Chucky also looks terrible, but at least it's slightly less baby-boomerish.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

but there's fuck all playing in town and I have the day off because of rain - I can't decide if I want to see Chucky or the Incredibles.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Ray isn't a very good movie. Personally, I'd rather people a) go out and buy a bunch of Ray Charles' music to learn about him or b) read a biography of his life instead of watching Jamie Foxx go through the rote mimicry people are calling acting.

Go see the Incredibles instead of Chucky, Milo.

don weiner, Monday, 15 November 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

In what bizarro universe is mimicry NOT acting?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Seed of Chucky" is a much better title than "Ray."

shookout (shookout), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Seed of Ray (of Light)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a shame, about Ray.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The real question is, of course, has Dan seen Ray yet?

EComplex (EComplex), Saturday, 20 November 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ray seems to be over serious melodramatic biopic, with a person who i have never been convinced can act, mimicing someone (ie will smith in ali)

chucky seems to be a perfectly self aware, campy peice of media skewering candy, staring an actress i have always enjoyed, and sometimes is brilliant (tilly)

i choose chucky.

anthony, Saturday, 20 November 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm with anthony, tho i doubt i'll bother with either movie.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 20 November 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I will again ask:

In what bizarro universe is mimicry NOT acting?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 20 November 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

In what bizarro universe is mimicry NOT acting?

Are you ignoring my qualifier of "rote" to ask a rhetorical question?

don weiner, Saturday, 20 November 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Rote mimicry may not be your bag, but how is it not a type of acting?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 20 November 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes Dan, all portrayals are acting of sorts. Why are you so interested in splitting hairs about this on a fine Saturday morning?

don weiner, Saturday, 20 November 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

DAN SMASH PUNY FALSE BINARY

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 20 November 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

u know, i WAS gonna start a "come anticipate SEED OF CHUCKY" thread, then i saw this one.

(though they should really get Bushwick Bill to play Chucky ... or Chucky's slightly-less deranged ghetto cousin ... or something.)

DAN WILL RULE THE DAY HE SMASH MY PUNY FALSE BINARY.

don weiner, Saturday, 20 November 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

CHUCKIE, by the geto boys:

Verse one: bushwick bill

I told you size wasn’t shit
That’s why I murdered your neices
Wasn’t my fault they found they head cut in 88 pieces
Don’t let ’em run
Hurry up and catch ’em
You grab an arm I grab an arm let’s pull ’till we stretch ’em
Play pussy, get fucked
Means you’re better off dead
I wanna see food so I fished in a child’s head
Motherfuckers be worried ’cause I’m sick
Dead heads and frog legs
Mmm... cake mix!
Friday the 13th
The night of the living dead
? ? ? ? ? ? walkin’ ’round givin niggas head
If you didn’t die, I’d say you got lucky
All bodies found dead
Fuck it, blame it on chuckie
But this is child’s play... motherfucka!!!

Verse 2:

Aw fuck, chuck’s on a killin’ spree!
Gimme some barb and I’ll start by killin me!
When I murder, I tried to slack off
Now 100 missiles blew a little girl’s back off
My name is chuckie, some say I’m insane
You give me some gin, and I might eat a dog’s brain!
Give me a motherfuckin 15-pack
And I’ll be damned if I don’t bring 15 dead niggas back!
A murder contest,
You know I’ll win it
Cause in every mailbox, there be a head with a knife in it
I’m gettin hungry
I need to be fed
I feel like eatin’ a bag of barbequed broke legs!
Bustin’ necks with a motherfuckin’ brick!
Half my body is chuckie
The other half is bushwick
A short nigga
Always pumpin’ some lead
Haven’t figured out a way to get my fist out your forehead
What up
Get up
Sit up
You get lit up
A knife in his neck made a polar bear spit up
A 9, a uzi is my only utensils
Inside his chest they found 10,000 pencils
You have the nerve to try to go against chuck?
With fifty guns aimed at you
How the fuck you gonna duck?
Yo,
When I’m mad, I’m ready to slay
The graveyards are packed
But it ain’t nothin’ but child’s play

Verse 3:

You’d better murder me
Put me to rest
Cause if you don’t I’ll come out shootin
With my head in a bird’s chest
Pissed off,
The way I’m always soundin’
Killed a punk in ’82, and they just now found ’im
Some say I’m crazy
Some say I’m on crack
Before I die
Cut off my leg and let me die in iraq
A born loooser
Some say I’m mindless
If I get pissed off
You leave naked and spineless
Worse than charles manson
Never havin’ a equal
Went sleepwalkin’ last night and killed 300 people
When I woke up they had me chained to the floor
When they told me what I did I killed 300 more
Yo
You wanna rumble?
Then go get your war hat
I went to jail for assault with a carjack
I might be small
But my nuts are big
The worst that you could do is let me keep your fuckin kids
Cause I’m a teach ’em how to act
And if they ain’t actin’ right
They dyin’ tonight!
So, uh
Ain’t no use in you tryin’ to spot ’em
I send you a motherfuckin note that says chuckie’s got em!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 20 November 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

and EVERY RIP on "seed of chucky" is just making it EVEN MORE APPEALLING ... and it was VERY appealing to me right from the start!

and sorry, i really couldn't care less about a film about ray charles. actually, i'm not sorry about that ... i ain't no rockist!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 20 November 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

In what bizarro universe is the future of the art of cinema dependent on the success of Ray, of all movies?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 20 November 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the point's been made many times but...

Dan, why do you think a lot of people are planning to see Alexander, for instance? Heeeelllo.

donut christ (donut), Saturday, 20 November 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Granted, Oliver Stone has a better track record for movie quality than...um, whoever made the Chucky films.. but.. well, people like to go out and see stupid movies that don't exactly pretend to be anything but.

(OK, maybe Alexander needs to be in a category of its own)

donut christ (donut), Saturday, 20 November 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

This is much more about the fact that Chucky movies suck ferocious ass than it is that Ray will redefine American culture.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a difference between exact copies, and making something new w. the material

anthony, Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

woah, according to imdb trivia Jamie Foxx played the piano in all his scenes AND since he had to wear eye prosethetics, did it BLIND! method acting, goddamn.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

And the reason you would want to "make something new" when portraying a non-fictional character in a biopic is because...?

"He does such a bad job in Ray, it's like it's Ray Charles in the whole movie!"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

though this is a pretty lame anachronism: At the 1965 Newport Jazz Festival scene, Quincy Jones is wearing "Ray Bans" sunglasses bearing the familiar Ray Bans logo etched in the corner of one of the lenses. Bausch & Lomb did not begin to etch their Ray Bans lenses with the logo until 1990.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

(I will admit that if Foxx had portrayed Ray Charles as a version of his Wanda character from "In Living Color", I would have already seen the movie.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM! There was some snarky pop cultural "who's up? who's down?" type item on Jaime Foxx a few weeks ago that had him up, but only with the caveat that he not follow Ray up with a movie based on Wanda. And I was all "What the everloving Christ do they mean by that?!?!" As far as I'm concerned, the collective Wanda segments taken as a single performance easily trump his performance in Ray. (I haven't seen it, but I stand by my value assignments with total confidence.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 21 November 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

and he's gunna rock our world.

kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 21 November 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I being pessimistic in agreeing the Foxx will be popular, but feeling that he has done nothing to show he has much acting ability at all? Also, I like the Chucky movies - enjoyed them when I was young. And Bride of Chucky had Jon Ritter in it, which means it is great.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 21 November 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

HAve you seen Ali or Any Given Sunday???

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Or "In Living Color", for that matter?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen Ali and Any Given Sunday and hated them both, and wasn't impressed with Foxx in either. Sorry. I'm unaware of 'In Living Color'.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Collateral, which is still maybe in my top 5 of 2004.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Sunday, 21 November 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i have seen both, thot one was flashy but basically useless and the other i walked out of.

anthony, Monday, 22 November 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Bride of Chucky was a surprisingly good little movie. Directed by one of Hong Kong’s true masters (Ronny Yu), whose “Bride of White Hair” probably poos over most of the films in your DVD collection Mr Perry. I’d advise, therefore, you check out “Bride” and realise what a stylish and well- directed film it is. This is not “Leprechaun In the Hood” or some such B-grade nonsense, but rather a high quality genre movie. In light of the last sequel I find it hardly surprising that the fifth in the series should be a hit – although without Yu on board I’m not sure it can be better than the fourth. Still, surely on the strength of its predecessor it has more to recommend it than Ray.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(If "Bride of Chucky" is way way better than "Jacob's Ladder", "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and the first two extended version Lord of the Rings movies, I might as well kill myself because life as I know it is irrevokably wrong.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

WHEN WILL HORROR BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY AS A GENRE? IT'S NOT FAIR, I'M OFF TO LISTEN TO SOME SUEDE.

Fango saddo (Ex Leon), Monday, 22 November 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow Dan, so let’s see then – your list of four great movies begins in 1991??? I bet you’re one of these guys who insists that Terminator 2 is a classic. And the only foreign language film you can think of is Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (and many would certainly vouch for the superiority of The Bride with White Hair over that film, and Ronny Yu – unlike Ang Lee – never went on to make anything nearly as bad as Hulk). Bride of Chucky is probably more fun than Jacob’s Ladder. I’d sooner watch Bride of Chucky over it anyway, and Adrian Lyne is still unforgiven for such rubbish as Fatal Attraction. Anyway, check out Iron Monkey – that’s at least as good as Crouching Tiger.

C.Taylor, Monday, 22 November 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Iron Monkey" is fantastic, I just don't own it. I don't spend all that much time watching movies and I don't own very many of them. I also misread your post, which I though was comparing "Bride Of Chucky" to my DVD collection rather than this other movie I haven't seen.

Actress Jennifer Tilly Wins Poker Event

LAS VEGAS (AP) —

Actress Jennifer Tilly is no poker pretender. Tilly won the Ladies no-limit Texas Hold 'Em event at the World Series of Poker, marking the first time a celebrity has won a bracelet at the famous tournament.

Tilly's skillful and self-admitted lucky play earned her $158,625. She beat 600 players to capture first place in the grueling two-day event that featured some of the top female pros in the world. The buy-in was $1,000.

"I think she showed an incredible amount of talent," WSOP media director Nolan Dalla said. "She had an enormous chip lead and never looked back. It was almost as though her victory was never in question."

Tilly, 46, said she's learned plenty of pointers from her boyfriend, poker player Phil "Unabomber" Laak.

"When you're living with Phil, you kinda learn by osmosis," Tilly told CardPlayer.com. "Even in the middle of the night, he wakes up screaming out poker terms. Most guys scream out other girls' names. He'll wake up and go, `I should have bet more on the turn.'"

Tilly, an Oscar nominee for her role in the 1994 film, "Bullets Over Broadway," is the first woman in this year's WSOP to win a bracelet.

The WSOP is being held at the Rio hotel-casino.

HI DERE SO I FINALLY SAW "RAY"

Shocker, I really, really, really liked it. I kind of feel like everyone who criticized Jamie Foxx's performance in this movie were accidentally watching "The Jamie Foxx Show" instead of the movie.
