ILX, help me decide on a laptop computer

I'm pretty sure I *DON'T* want a dell or hp laptop, but past that I'm a little behind in what's going on in the laptop market.

I'm furiously trying to do my homework, but so far all I'm turning up are various IBM/sony machines that are a little pricy and get mixed reviews.

Although I don't know how serious to take some of these review sites when the dells get amazing ranks from the professional reviewers, yet all the user reviews are negative and about severe problems.

So I'm turning to you, ILX, to tell me about your laptops and what you like/don't like about them. Also to make recommendations.

As for what I'm looking for, something decently powerful. I'm also going to upgrade my (4-year old) desktop system when I buy this, but I'd like to be able to do a decent amount of things on the go if at all possible (battery life is also important, since I'm a lazy bum about charging).

So ... hey?

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 18 November 2004 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What's your price range? I had a Toshiba Satellite for a long time. It was a lovely piece of equipment, but after travelling to 5 different countries and 8 different residences it shit the bed in a big way -- the monitor flipped out. At any rate, unless you're going to be doing hard-core travel I would recommend it without any hesitation. They're low-priced (starting at $800) and fairly fully loaded.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm, well it's going on to my last student loan, so I have like UP TO 2k to spend, but I'd like to spend a little less and save the rest for things like getting settled after graduation.

How full-featured are we talking?
I just have bad memories of the old old old-school toshibas being a little chintsy.

save the $2,000 for when you're unemployed after graduation. get a job where you'll have your own computer and internet access. make enough money to by a fuck off laptop computer.

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, what a prick.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

also, tks remy

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

toshiba has changed.

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

for some reason I just just feel the japanese behind the toshiba site.

it's weird, but even though everything is correct on it, I have this strange twinge of engrish-dar that's not present on other sites (not even sony).

I can't quite explain it.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

not to say I'm not seriously considering their notebooks at this point, though.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Wayne, are you totally set against the idea of an ibook?

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately so.
As much as I'm in love with the design/etc., for the software I need to use on a day-to-day basis macs just don't cut it.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

toshiba are mexican.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

'la toshiba es en mis pantalones con huevos y salsa blanca' feels like a sentence I probably said in middle school.

(xpost)
Yeah, I'm with you on that. I tried to switch to mac a year or so ago, but it was too difficult to port over all my projects.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately so.

shame, the battery life in my ibook is a good 2 hours longer than the pc laptop i had before it. i get well over 5 hours if i'm just using it to wordprocess.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

sadly there's no GIS software I know of for the mac.

That and a few other things are my main deterrants.

Also, the price is a bit high in general.
I know, I know, I mean I did fork out damn near $400 for an ipod, but still.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

here's another question, how worth it are the various extendend warranties for various companies?

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i extended the warranty on my old pc laptop by 2 years. the only time i used the warranty was when it was still under the 12 month manufacturer's warranty. however, it was a really good selling point when i sold it and bought my new one as it still had 13 months under warranty

gem (trisk), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

A search on GIS in the Made for Mac Directory (http://guide.apple.com/) reveals the following Mac GIS software (a cursory search theres much more in there):

iMap
ArcExplorer
Canvas 9 GIS
Grass GIS (free/open source)
Generic Mapping tools

Ed (dali), Thursday, 18 November 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Grass seeming to be a bit of an academic standard (I could be wrong).

Ed (dali), Thursday, 18 November 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, let me restate that as no FULL-FEATURED GIS software for macs.

But as I said before, that's not the only reason why I can't switch.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 18 November 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the industry standard for GIS is the shit ESRI makes, which, while terribly overpriced, is really really really good.

not to mention Autodesk's cad software is currently not for apples (despite apparant petitions for them to port it).

As much as I'd love to make one of those dumb 'switch' ads, these bits of software and some others aren't available on apples and probably won't be anytime soon.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 18 November 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had a Fujitsu Siemens for the last 8 months and i've had absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. Very quick, lots of memory (60gb) and stuff.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Thursday, 18 November 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Autocad is definately a big hurdle, Vectoworks is good but it isn't autocad.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 18 November 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Thinkpad X30 or x40 series. They're tiny and light, don't have a cd-drive in them (use a dock for that), built-in wireless, 12" screen, good memory and great keyboard. USB and firewire included. I think you can get an x30 on ebay for about $1000 or so.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

They are also fairly indestructable. You have to like the nipple pointer. though, that's the only downer with the IBMs.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite like my ThinkPad T40 - it has a touchpad as well as a nipple pointer if you don't like those and they are pretty sturdy as Ed said. I got it for free as well (as long as I still work here).

robster (robster), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea what GIS is, but if you can run it on a Unix variety, then there's a fair chance that you can run it on the Mac via Terminal or XTerm (depending on what it is). As I'm not entirely certain what kind of program I'm talking about here, I'll just leave that out there.

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 18 November 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Grass GIS is the Unix one, runs under X11 in OS X, there's a really handy os x installer for it and an Aqua port going on.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 18 November 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I already looked at the grass gis page and it unfortunately isn't as full-featured as I'd need.

The mac/PC issue isn't really up for debate here, it's a sad conclusion I had to make ahead of time.

But I'm definitely going to look into some of these models mentioned.
I've already been exploring IBMs multitude of thinkpad setups, I just worry that the more poewrful ones I was drooling at might have shit battery life.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 18 November 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

wayne! i didn't know you were using GIS!?!@

I used ArcView on a first gen G4 running virtual PC back in the day!

Does John Coltrane Dream of a Merry-go-round? (ex machina), Thursday, 18 November 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah dude
I'm all about GIS lately.

Unfortunately the copy of arcgis (I think 4?) is hella unstable.
Like whenever I try to make certain dataset layers visible it just straight up crashes. It really blows, because MassGIS is the only place to get a lot of the data, and they only have the one version that crashes it for me.

: (

But still, yeah.
Depending on what I'm doing I'm switching between arcgis and arcexplorer (for the really basic shit). Mostly arcgis lately, though. explorer is just too limited for most of what I need to do with it.

also, I had no idea you were into GIS stuff????
awesome.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
i've spent most of the day looking at thinkpads and i'm almost ready to pull the trigger. i basically know which model/customizations i want, but questions linger:

how important is processor speed vs. memory vs. hard drive speed? i read one article that said there's no reason to worry about memory as long as your notebook's hdd is at least 5400 rpm. if my thinkpad's memory is only 256mb, is there still "no reason to worry" or should i spend the $80 and upgrade to the more standard 512mb? also, would you say that 1.6GHz processor speed is more than adequate for someone who isn't a big gamer/overclocker?

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Upgrade the RAM. CPU speed is fine. Probably better for battery life too.

absolutego (ex machina), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what i thought. thanks.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the more ram the better your computer will run, it seems like the most important factor, relatively speaking

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

haha ok that bumps the price up to (*mops brow*) $1,578.99.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not a powerbook?

absolutego (ex machina), Friday, 1 April 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

the "i hate apple" thread didn't give me much confidence.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Go Fujitsu, Ive just bought a 1.7 kg notebook with all the goodies and shes a real sexy baby , very happy.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

save a thousand bucks and just buy one of the many used ones on craigslist or ebay. Most laptops have a very long life if you don't use them all day every day.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

eh, i'd rather not.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i like how "i already know which notebook i want" translates to "please tell me which notebook to buy."

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

upgrade the ram.
did you look at toshiba satellite laptops? ive had mine a year and a half with zero problems. i had wanted athinpad but have been happy.
heavy units though.

kephm, Friday, 1 April 2005 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I WANT THE THINKPAD. DON'T MAKE ME GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD AGAIN. I JUST SPENT ALL DAY LOOKING AT THINKPADS.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

You crazy. Get a Mac.

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The only reason people hate on macs is: FALSE GRAILS

Seriously, the laptop offerings are 1000x better than the PC world. There is no substantitive mac/pc price difference for laptops anymore. Oh and "no spyware (yet)" and no "internet explorer security holes"

absolutego (ex machina), Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm armed with some pretty good spyware detectors, and i mostly use firefox, so nyeh!

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

why are mac laptops so much better, other than "they just are, you stupid luddite, get with the program"?

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

and please tell me without throwing marketing buzzwords at me.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

they have more proactive synergy!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 2 April 2005 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

they "feel" better, and that's coming from someone who doesn't even use a mac all the time. they have better screen realestate, and you can get a really, really good computer for the money, which is often not the case with pc laptops

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 2 April 2005 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

to be serious jody, i converted from pc about 1.5 years ago and went with a powerbook & i have never looked back! all of the problems i had on a seemingly daily basis with my pc (programs crashing blah blah) went poof. but i dunno, i hear windows xp is totally better now, so what do i know.

also the people on the "i hate apple" thread are mostly talking about customer support (which i have found good the one time i had to use it) and weird quibbles about changing fonts in the finder or something equally incomprehensible to me

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 2 April 2005 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

they "feel" better ... they have better screen realestate

gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

also the people on the "i hate apple" thread are mostly talking about customer support (which i have found good the one time i had to use it)

i found my small handful of experiences with apple customer support pleasant as well. but i'm worried that as apple are increasingly identified as "the ipod company" they'll be too preoccupied refurbishing thrashed ipods to have time for powerbook repair.

and weird quibbles about changing fonts in the finder or something equally incomprehensible to me

that is one thing i've never liked about macs.

my bf, bless his soul, is a dyed-in-the-wool mac dude, and while i think he's a brilliant and wonderful and effervescent soul, i'm sure he'd be the first to admit that most of his apple computer luv comes from his days as a '70s/'80s california teenage haX0r. and that bird i cannot change, whoa-whoa-whoa. but it's 2005 now, and if you're reasonably well-informed and not a total moron, you can buy a damned good pc and keep it out of trouble.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 April 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

they "feel" better ... they have better screen realestate

This may be meaningless to you, but it's kinda true. I have a PC at home and a Mac at work, and while my PC does most things I want it to, I can't wait to get back to what I consider my more efficient, better-featured, and, yes, better *feeling* computer at work. Also, I'm addicted to Quicksilver now, which is this program that makes searching easier than you could ever imagine on a PC and lets you set up your own hotkeys for anything you want and does especially good things when browsing iTunes. This situation is only going to improve with Tiger, I am told.

The trouble with a Powerbook, though, is that they're not really comparably priced to PC laptops. They're still a good bit more expensive. Sorry.

I go back and forth all the time on what my next computer will be, and generally decide to wait for my next raise in either case. (Which may be soon!)

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Saturday, 2 April 2005 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

what if my pc "feels" fine? what if i don't believe the macs i've worked on "felt" any better? do i hate fun? am i broken?

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

you're not thinking different enough

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ahhhh.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i just am addicted to exposé!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but you probably haven't used a Mac as much as someone who loves them. It took me months to understand what was so great. In fact, at first I was totally frustrated. But there is a certain... I dunno... smooth action about them. Like that great pair of nailclippers that just works sooo smooth, and is really sharp. To form a totally weird analogy.

I'm no zealot, don't get me wrong.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

did you tell your mac about all those pictures of sony vaios you've been posting to ilx threads?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

also i just find the whole 2005-era self-mythologizing "cult of apple" and its 2001-meets-dianetics aesthetic kind of icky and unsettling.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

so do i, to tell the truth.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but you probably haven't used a Mac as much as someone who loves them.

i've owned one, and i've worked on them in two jobs.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Slocki... i have a brand new g5 at work! So Mac is happy with me. I have not angered to Gods in any significant way.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, ok, jody... not tryin' to fight. I'm just sayin'. They're very nice computers.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

just a little fun on the side, right? (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't loved a mac since the 512

kephm (kephm), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a big two-timer anyway. Here I sit, using XP. I am baseless and moralless -- I feel absolutely no shame.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

is this what "closer" is about?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i just am addicted to exposé!

Oh, I KNOW! So many times I hit f9 at home, only to get a big ol' nothin'. Such a letdown.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it's especially useful on my 12" laptop, especially f11 (the one that instantly reveals the desktop)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

f10 too, when working with a multi-window app

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i use hot corners for expose.... so nice

absolutego (ex machina), Saturday, 2 April 2005 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
ok i'm going to buy a laptop, like now. some things:

law school will not let me get a mac
it can't be heavy. i have to carry it around, possibly on a bicycle
must be inexpensive, really inexpensive
i want to watch movies on it sometimes
other than that i only need word processing and internet

i am considering the tiniest dell, but dells are bad, huh?
what do i do

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:12 (twenty years ago)

get a mac anyway and dual-boot windows, duh

gbx otm

Jena (JenaP), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

My parents have had really good luck with Toshiba Satellites over the last few years. Toshiba has a low-end 14" model w/ Core Duo processor, etc. for about the same price as a MacBook.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:20 (twenty years ago)

law school will not let me get a mac

wtf, does this school specialize in NAZI LAW?

The Jazz Guide to Penguins on Compact Disc (Rock Hardy), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:20 (twenty years ago)

oh, yeah, that's always an option - but getting Windows adds $200+ dollars to the price of the laptop.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:21 (twenty years ago)

only if you obey the law

JW (ex machina), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:22 (twenty years ago)

ok no the testing software they use only works with windows AND I ALSO SAID THAT SO NOBODY WOULD SAY "GET A MAC" SHUT THE FUCK UP OK

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I thought Windows was unpiratable these days. I am warez ignorant, though.

Toshiba MacBook: even has the same crappy integrated graphics
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=337637&pfp=browse&tabtype=ts#moreinfo

milo z (mlp), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

ok maybe i should get the macbook and just pir8 windows........................................HMMMMMMMMMMMM

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:41 (twenty years ago)

windows is still totally pirateable. is there anything that isn't?!

must be inexpensive, really inexpensive

that does rule out macs though, no?

toby (tsg20), Monday, 29 May 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

no, not really, i'm thinking. the dell i was looking at is not going to be a whole lot cheaper. not enough cheaper to be worth it, anyway. i'm still not sure though. the macbook would be $1049 with edu discount as long as i get nothing at all extra. is it that important to get applecare or anything else?

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 29 May 2006 21:08 (twenty years ago)

AppleCare gives you three years replacement and support. Totally worth it on a $2800 17" Pro, but I don't know about it on the MacBook.

You can always buy AppleCare later, up until the one-year anniversary of your purchase.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 29 May 2006 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I have the MacBook Pro and I'm running Windows in Parallels virtualisation, just alt+enter to flip between os x and windows, pleanty fast enough for MS Office and Outlook. My windows is legit, my work is an MS certified partner so we get a cheap site licence for MS products.

Ed (dali), Monday, 29 May 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

caitlin, at my school they wouldn't let me take my exams on a mac, even if the mac was running windows, so if yr planning on doing that i wd check with the school before making a purchase and get it in writing signed by like the presidetn of the universe. i ended up using a mac for class and a pc for exams - maybe you can rent? this may be more of a hassle than it's worth though.

i remember girlz who wanted ultralight cheapies carrying around VAIOs, though most girls carried around real machines. yr not going to use it after 3 years anyway, most likely, right?

applecare might be important when your machine dies in the middle of the semester and you're on-call in 2 classes next week and you don't want to spend half the day on the phone with the computer people.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 29 May 2006 22:26 (twenty years ago)

ok i was gonna check with them first anyway! i think i would not get the applecare right away as my dad is helping me buy this for my grad present. i want to make it look like it's not much more expensive. if i want it later i'll get it.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 29 May 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

the reason my school wouldn't let me use fake-windows was because i could easily toggle between windows and outside-windows world, i.e. it would be very easy to cheat on exams. never mind that you could probably easily hack your way around the exam app on a windows machine, but everyone wants to pretend that isn't true.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 29 May 2006 23:03 (twenty years ago)

Jon/Ed - if my uses are confined to Photoshop, a little inDesign and regular computer things (iWorks/Office, Firefox, iTunes), no games, video editing or 3d stuff, then I'm probably never going to notice the crappy graphics card in a current MacBook, right?

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 00:30 (twenty years ago)

You ought to be fine, max out the RAM and if you want to go the whole hog, swap out the disk for a 7200RPM one.

I got the MBP on a whim, mainly to run aperture which I haven't decided to get yet, however Im glad I did as Civ iV looks like it will require discrete graphics.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 00:49 (twenty years ago)

I've got a MacBook here. You're never going to notice the graphics card doing those things. Aperture runs slow, but Lightroom runs fast as fuck.

But you're probably going to notice the shitty screen, which has a pink tint and some shocking colour ghosting.

stet (stet), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 01:41 (twenty years ago)

Have you calibrated it (either by look or with a Spyder/Eye-One/etc.)?

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Yes-ish. I tried the Apple calibrator, but the default calibration is so off the scale that the controls are unusable. I tried a couple of other apps, with equally poor results. There's an Eye-One at work, so I'm going to try that tomorrow. ISTR early cinema displays also having a pink hue problem, actually.

Either way, the calibration shouldn't affect the colour ghosting (which is wild on text too: scroll ilx and the screen goes nuts).

stet (stet), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 02:10 (twenty years ago)

That doesn't sound good. Guess I'll have to go to the Apple Store and try a couple.

I can't decide if Macs have more problems than other manufacturers or if we owners are just more vocal.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 03:34 (twenty years ago)

It'd be good to know how you got on: I think this one might have to go back. There are other reports of the pinkness on forums, so I might wait a while and send it back when they're fixed.

(The best test, btw, is a flickr picture. Wiggle the window around and you'll see the control buttons disappear and the flickr logo go all turquoise)

stet (stet), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 03:38 (twenty years ago)

stet, performance aside on the MacBook, Lightroom or Aperture, which do you prefer?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 09:36 (twenty years ago)

It's hard to separate out the performance, really. Aperture probably edges it -- the loupe is good, and it does versioning much better -- but it's needlessly slow except on the hairiest mac. Lightroom is doing the same basic thing (ie working with RAW) and runs rings round it.

stet (stet), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 11:10 (twenty years ago)

toshiba or fujitsu
don't touch a dell esp. for "ultralight"

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 11:43 (twenty years ago)

My Dell is obscenely heavy. It's like a humvee in laptop form.

Crimea River (Mark C), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 12:07 (twenty years ago)

Caitlin, use the drill down search on newegg.com:

then plug the model you find into froogle:

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

The small Fujitsus are really good and I'm still a fan of Samsungs.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 12:41 (twenty years ago)

yeah i am now looking at fujitsu but law school now says the software does work with mac so it will be ok!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 12:53 (twenty years ago)

my macbook is "on fedex vehicle for delivery" and i am maddd excited!

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

i will let you know what i think because my uses will also be word processing, internet, and a school course.

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 13:18 (twenty years ago)

I covet the Panasonic Y5. The R5 is even smaller.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

The red color on the Y5 looks nice

JW (ex machina), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

ok new macbook is here and my initial reaction is that the keyboard's fine, i'm not getting a glare on the screen at the moment, my dad's dell now seems like a monster. my one complaint is the temp.

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

hmm, have you run all the updates? IIRC, the Macbook Pro had some temp issues resolved this way

JW (ex machina), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

the software updates? they are dling now

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

my advent died today after 12 months og okay service and 3 months of sitting in the shop being 'repaired'. i will have vouchers at the end of the week for a new one. options are limited, but:

a) will never touch advent again
b) it has to be a pc laptop
so
c) i should go for toshiba, yes? are compaq any good? and i run a bunch of programs all at once, so i should aim for the largest RAM i can get, yes?

thank you in advance...

samsung

Ed (dali), Monday, 12 June 2006 10:49 (twenty years ago)

oooh. the eveil pcworld/dixons/currys triumvirate i have to shop from don't seem to be offering samsung, but will see what i can do there - thanks ed.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Monday, 12 June 2006 11:03 (twenty years ago)

toshiba are not bad though, they seem to be bigger and heavier than the competition though.

Ed (dali), Monday, 12 June 2006 11:04 (twenty years ago)

given my last 3 months of woe, if it broke my back to carry it but was a sturdy mother, i would not complain.

one year passes...

have been offered one as a present. y'all must use em: some current advice pls?

Upt0eleven, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

cheapio ideally since I have a desktop and wouldn't be using it for much more than tinternet and maybe some bits of cooledit. dvd player handy.

Upt0eleven, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

get the best apple the gift giver can afford and slap some extra ram up in that bitch (buy it separate so it cost you about 50% less, it is so easy to install an untrained monkey could do it)

oh, xpost. uhh... cheap. second hand?

Will M., Monday, 24 September 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

no no no no no. i do not want an apple. i demand a right mouse button goddamit.

Upt0eleven, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

i'm working on an apple right now (not mine obv) and while i like the look of them and they are nice to type on i've still never developed much of an attachment despite putting in the hours.

and not second hand.

Upt0eleven, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

you know you can plug in any usb mouse and the right button acts as a pc-style right click?

Will M., Monday, 24 September 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

Then buy a normal mouse/trackball.

Whatever the Microsoft travel mouse is that works off a usb thumb-drive is great, it works better than any wireless mouse I've used.

milo z, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

the mouse is not my only grievance. i just use my pc for so many different functions and have found macs to be a lot less versatile. although i'm confident mac users will wax lyrical to the contrary.

Upt0eleven, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

"wouldn't be using it for much more than tinternet and maybe some bits of cooledit"?

milo z, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

I've never found myself lacking in software for the Mac. And you can always install Windows on it and run Parallels or BootCamp.

I'd look at the lower end of Lenovo's Thinkpad line if you want a Windows-only machine. Toshiba and Fujitsu have also been quality in my experience.

milo z, Monday, 24 September 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

i think i want a laptop that performs as a pc so i might as well just get one of them rather than adapting a mac right? cheaper too. i shall look into the toshiba und the fujitsu.

Upt0eleven, Monday, 24 September 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

I have a £500-£600 budget and don't do much gaming. I'm tempted by the Macbook linked below, but have only real experience of Windows operating systems.

Anybody got anything in this range that they're very very happy with? Should I go Mac?

Mister Craig, Friday, 23 November 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

YES GO MAC FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 23 November 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

Click "ok" and enter your systems adminstrator's password and it will be installed on your computer with full system access after which you are, to use the jargon, "pwned", or scuppered.

anyone who does this deserves what they get

DG, Sunday, 25 November 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

libcrypt, that Macbook says "out of stock"

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 25 November 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

I've got macbook, but I'm not completely convinced it wouldn't have been better to get a hp laptop - by the time you add in applecare, macbooks are pretty expensive for what they are.

The main reason I changed to mac is that i was totally fed up with all the microsoft security updates...doing a full clean install of XP would take hours because of all the additional security updates, and i guessed Vista would be the same.

Bob Six, Sunday, 25 November 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I got an iBook clamshell w/OS9 for $50 and it is love. For what I need to do, which is typing papers & playing SimCity 2k.

Speaking of retro Macs, anyone know a good place in London to pick up a cheap 12" G4 iBook? Everything on eBay seems a bit pricey.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 25 November 2007 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

Who wants to buy a 1st-gen clamshell iMac?

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 25 November 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry about that. The Apple refurb store tends to update very quickly. Guess they ran out between my posting and you looking. Anyways, it was a white MB, 2GHz.

libcrypt, Monday, 26 November 2007 00:00 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe someone bought it after looking at my post.

libcrypt, Monday, 26 November 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

Rock, do you mean you have one for sale, or "Why the hell wld anyone buy one?" I like mine.

Abbott, Monday, 26 November 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

We have one that might be for sale in a few weeks.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 26 November 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

I wouldn't mind one.

melton mowbray, Monday, 26 November 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

first the screen died
then the speakers died
then my husband put a dent in the keyboard
now we need to buy a replacement laptop

recommendations from the experts?

we want something fairly fast/powerful and are willing to spend a little more on this than we normally would

DAN P3RRY MAD AT GRANDMA (just1n3), Sunday, 1 November 2009 17:24 (sixteen years ago)

(no mac recommendations, please)

DAN P3RRY MAD AT GRANDMA (just1n3), Sunday, 1 November 2009 17:24 (sixteen years ago)

There's plenty of options, but narrowing it down is difficult without an idea of your budget and requirements re screen size - ie. is this intended for true portable work, or will you primarily be using it on a desk?

Bill A, Sunday, 1 November 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

a bigger screen - yes
truly portable - not important. will mostly be used at home.
budget... probably no more than $1200 at a stretch

my husband likes dell and is thinking of getting a dell studio xps

DAN P3RRY MAD AT GRANDMA (just1n3), Sunday, 1 November 2009 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

that's a good choice - top of the list for my recommendations would be dell or toshiba, just for sheer reliability and build quality, whilst retaining a keen pricepoint.

the xps studio 16 with LED display and core 2 duo processor options is a little less or a little more than your budget by the look of it, dependent on if you go for the faster processor option and bigger hard disk.

Bill A, Sunday, 1 November 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

from my husband:

"putting my initial budget aside for a second, is it really worth $500 or so more to upgrade to the core i7 processor in the high-end xps studio 16? or if i'm not gaming or watching movies all the time, is a core 2 duo more than enough?"

DAN P3RRY MAD AT GRANDMA (just1n3), Sunday, 1 November 2009 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

definitely not worth the upgrade - you'll find that a modern laptop with 4GB memory, Windows 7 and a c2d chip plenty fast enough for pretty much any "home" use.

Bill A, Sunday, 1 November 2009 18:12 (sixteen years ago)

four months pass...

I'm trying to figure out how to write a simple script to kill the wireless on a Thinkpad (with the alt-f4 command? something like that) for a period of every day tied to the computer's clock. Does anyone know how I could do this? There must be a way.

antexit, Thursday, 11 March 2010 14:59 (sixteen years ago)

ten years pass...

My 'buying a laptop for music and DJing' woes are continuous and well documented here on ILX and elsewhere. I'm really at the end of my tether now.

So far:

1. Bought a £500 Windows laptop from Dell as part of a special offer. A friend who described himself as a 'techie' recommended I snap it up saying it was increidbly high-spec for the price. Unfortunately the AMD processor meant that it was rubbish for DJ and music applications. Graphics on Serato were jerky and it generally felt laggy and unresponsive. After a good while with their tech department I ended up getting a refund.

2. Bought a £600 refurbished Mac. 16GB RAM running Catalina. I use a Mac for work so it's not like I'm completely new to them, but I found the interfacee a bit hard to use - lots of niggly little problems. Also it would get extremely hot and then lag.

3. The guy I bought it off switched out the insides into a supposedly better machine, but the issues continued along with lots of audio and USB drop-outs. Twice also it decided to disconnect my external hard drive for no reason and I had to first aid and remount it before it would work again. Plus I hated the fact I needed a dongle to plug in all my external equipment. I ended up cursing Apple and all they stand for. Bizarre since so many friends recommend Macs for music because they 'just work', whcih they clearly don't. I'm getting a refund on this one.

So six months down the line, and a lot of frustrating hours trying to troubleshoot all the issues, I'm still on my old trusty Asus 2012 Windows 7 laptop, which works at least even though it grumbles a bit when I ride it hard.

This review of a laptop especially for DJs really impressed me. Especially since it has a whole load of ports and great ventilation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqkUrgOvWx8 but a lot of comments were of the "no way, I'd rather get a Mac" variety. Is there really that much in it? I've always found Macs to be a bit haughty and fussy about the way things get done. I don't like how they ask for authentication each time I breathe in. I don't like their lack of inputs and ports. I don't like the way I can't customise column headers to show things like Bitrate or Artist in Finder. I don't like their attitude. But so many people tell me there's no contest.

So do I save up and get this XMG thing, or is it a gimmick? I'd mostly be using it to run Serato and Reason 11, but I might like to do a few other things at some point of course - wouldn't like to find that it's not designed to do, say, graphic or video editing work. I don't see myself gaming on it.

gaming laptop?

brimstead, Thursday, 12 November 2020 15:38 (five years ago)

lol didn’t even see the last work in your post was gaming. but yeah, I recently read some “best laptops for producing music” and a bunch/most of them were gaming laptops

brimstead, Thursday, 12 November 2020 15:41 (five years ago)

that surprises me. from what i've learnt there's a big difference between gaming laptop and music laptop specs, especially when it comes to processors: Gamers favour AMD whereas music and DJ software much prefers Intel.

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Thursday, 12 November 2020 15:57 (five years ago)

tbf, I would not evaluate Mac's "it just works" claim on a refurbished machine that had its insides completely swapped out

DJP, Thursday, 12 November 2020 16:02 (five years ago)

(This is not to say the claim isn't bullshit but you've effectively bought a used car from someone who has replaced the engine and drive shaft themselves, then complained about the original maker when the thing pulls hard to the left)

DJP, Thursday, 12 November 2020 16:03 (five years ago)

yeah yeah i know. but there are lots of inherent things about macs that make me wonder what exactly they were thinking when they decided to go down that particular ux/ui route. all a matter of choice, but the things are so. damn. inflexible.
