i think it's for on-the-cusp-of-has-been celebrities. it helps nudge them over. however, in combination with a pill it's honest in its self-confidence giving. but christ, you need so much (as an ordinary, split-with-wotever taker) that it's maybe better to stick with a pill and keep reminding yourself to like things a little less. and maybe be less demonstrative here and there.

Take a couple while you're coming down and you'll avoid any depression as it is a natural supplement that helps your brain reclaim some of the lost serotonin.Magnesium take a couple of hours before - it will stop the idiotic teeth grinding.Vitamin B6 and grapefruit juice is also excellent for comedowns. And take a tip from my friend Gravel Puzzleworth and wear sunglasses to stop the shark-eyed "aesthetic".

― Abbott, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)
dudes, I know what MDMA is! But there's a big difference between good ecstasy and stuff that's mostly amphetamine. I took both. The 90's rave scene was not centered in Texas, sadly.
― kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)
The worst = cut with ephedrine. I was a mess for two days after I took that stuff.
― kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)
apparently what it was is there are a bunch of drugs chemically similar to mdma going around some of which were considerable easier to produce than the real thing. also i think it just has a lot to do w/yr state of mind. anyway last time i did this stuff was new years 2000. do they still really have it?
― jhøshea, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)
I doubt it exists within a 500-700 mile radius of me.
― Abbott, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)
ok also i was discussing this w/a friend the other day: are there new drugs that the kids are into these days or what?
― jhøshea, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)
there are a ton of drugs that are cheaper/easier to produce than MDMA commonly passed off as ecstasy or used as adulterants, ranging from stimulants like amphetamines and ephedrine and caffeine to structurally similar psychedelics like MDA, MDEA, MBDB, and PMA, to PCP and K and sugar and pretty much any host of other active and inactive things.
but not cocaine, and not heroin, because they're more valuable when sold as what they actually are. it makes zero sense economically for a dealer or producer to use them.
as far as what kids are into these days: prescription drugs, salvia, a host of research chemicals for those who can still get them.
― pretzel walrus, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

spin magazine i owe you an apology. im sorry.
― jhøshea, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)
well salvia is sorta newly popularish, but it's not exactly "fun" so i don't think it's a good candidate for huge popularity/newsweek covers. research psychedelics were perhaps on the verge of that at one point but the DEA has cracked down very hard on the internet vendors who made them so easily available; there are a ton of legitimately new psychedelics there, but again, they're not always fun, and now they're much, much, much harder to find.
khat is pretty big with north african immigrants, but i don't think it's made too many inroads beyond their communities?
i guess cheese (a newish term for the combo of cheapo low-grade heroin and crushed up benadryl/tylenol pm for diphenydramine) has been getting a lot of panic attention in texas, where it's killed a few teenagers, including a middle school kid.
― pretzel walrus, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, i know, cheese. so stupid. get a better name, kids.
the vast majority of research chemicals were synthesized by alexander shulgin, who's generally credited with reintroducing MDMA (which he hoped would find favor as a therapeutic aid) in the early '70s. he's a fairly famous chemist who used to have a schedule I license from the DEA allowing him to work with illegal chemicals, and spent a large chunk of the '70s and '80s synthesizing a few hundred new psychedelics from the two major psychedelic chemical "families" - tryptamines and phenethylamines.
he published the syntheses in two books, which were then used by chemists to make many of the chemicals contained therein. those chems occupy a gray area, legally speaking - not specifically illegal, but they were structurally similar enough to chemicals that were that their use or possession could probably constitute an offense under the analog act.
although some, like 2c-b and a few others, were available from "smart shops" in europe in pill form, most were generally sold as powders, requiring mg-accurate scales to safely (and when i say "safely," please consider that there are virtually no published safety studies for any of these guys - certainly nothing like the data available on classic psychs like lsd and psilocin and mescaline) consume.
anyway when this stuff hit the internet in the mid-late '90s, a bunch of kids bought a ton of shit online and then consumed it in fairly unsafe ways - not measuring doses appropriately, snorting the powders, good shit like that. as noted, the safety margins on these guys are not necessarily what they are with any of the old big guys, and a few kids died after having snorted pretty large doses of a chem called 2-ct-7. that one got banned.
DEA raided a bunch of the online vendors earlier this decade in what i think was called "operation web tryp" and shut em down. you can still get some stuff from europe and asia, and from certain clandestine vendors in the U.S., but it's way, way, way harder. generally you can't just look them up on google and get good stuff anymore.
shame, because some of them were totally fantastic (if you like psychs) and every bit as powerful as any of the older guys, if not more.
― pretzel walrus, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)
shulgin got raided a while back and lost his sched. I license, but he keeps working on things to this day - recently he's been doing a bunch with isoquinolone cacti derivatives.

― Bill Magill, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)
Really? That seems... odd. I suppose it *sounds* like a good idea, but it's just amphetamine, speedy but hardly the big dopamine surge of cocaine, and very effectively time-released. Great for studying, I imagine, but not so much fun you want to snort it at a party. At least, not twice.

The only person I know who does adderall recreationally is not a student and does it to stay up all night on weekends because her boyfriend won't let her do coke because she'll "end up a cokehead," but now she's pretty hardcore fixated on prescription drugs (she uses ummm one of the anxiety ones I forget way more often) so I dunno what good it's doing. Everyone else I know uses it to pull all-nighters for papers and stuff. Honestly coke is probably bigger recreationally, at my school at least.

I think more people probably do it/have done it rather than coke overall, just not recreationally. I know probably twice as many people who do/have done coke recreationally than adderal recreationally. Maybe a class thing (I dunno financial makeup of 0xy college sry)? Maybe a coast thing? I could be wrong, too, because obviously it's a lot easier to pick out someone who does a lot of coke. FWIW acid is probably more popular than both of them, now that I think about it, 'cause it's kind of easy to get.
Prescription drugs were HUGE at the high schools in my hometown, tho.
I have also never done E, but then I don't really do a lot of drugs (except for obv two).
― jessie monster, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)
i think its in part a class thing b/c adderal is way less cost-prohibitive (tho on the other hand you have to go to school w/ the kind of rich kids whose parents send them to therapists) but i think it might also be a coast thing? altho a good friend of mine goes to umass amherst and says most of his friends take adderal every couple weekends.

cid is probably more popular than both of them, now that I think about it, 'cause it's kind of easy to get.
how true is this...? I have heard quite the opposite, particularly from *ahem* uh people on the supply end of things. It's seemed like acid's been on the way out for awhile - combination of punishments for posession/selling being completely insane and lack of interest from kids not interested in such an iffy trip when more predictable things like coke n ecstasy and pharmaceuticals are around

3. You feel shit the next day untill you have a pint, after which there's no stopping you.
OTM.
I do miss it on occasion. I can't stand Matthew Klam's fiction, but when he wrote that NYT Magazine cover story in 2001 about taking X in the mid eighties with friends so that they could Look Into Their Souls, it struck a chord. It was a bunch of bullshit. None of my three dozen experiences were in the right "intimate" setting, so his article read as wish fulfillment.

most of mine involved lots of dancing and foiled attempts at making out with friends.

I always enjoyed the comedown from E better than the, uh, main event. Less bad music, more feeling the love.
