Because everyone seemed to want one. Even though the last one loads slightly more quickly now that all the posts from the last two weeks have gone..

lupine lupin (lupinelupin), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 05:51 (twenty years ago)

At 52.41% in 26:40.
The last thing I finished was flight school.
I already own all the safe houses in LV and the complete Victim clothing line, but I haven't done any of Woozie's new missions yet.
Right now I'm on "N.O.E".

It's hard to kill a horse with a flute (AaronHz), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 06:50 (twenty years ago)

i'm trying to get my bro to bring his ps2 down to my parents house over the holiday so i go rent and finally play the game...

kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 06:59 (twenty years ago)

I just went and reposted most of the deleted messages onto the old thread. I saved it on the 17th...

It's hard to kill a horse with a flute (AaronHz), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 07:03 (twenty years ago)

I finally imported all the cars on the Import/Export list. Took me hours, but I am now a millionaire who can have a 300ZX Euros any time he wants.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 07:11 (twenty years ago)

huzzah, good save Aaron!

Finally started to find some more horseshoes in this game but the last 15 snapshots are elluding me.

Do you get any reward for buying all the clothes in each store?

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 09:40 (twenty years ago)

Don't think so. I just have around 6 million bucks I don't know what else to do with, and it's fun to have the complete wardrobe at you disposal, I guess.
Buying up all the clothes (excepting the last shop I haven't unlocked yet) has only cost around 35 grand, btw.

I finally passed that son of a bitching "N.O.E." by taking the western ocean route both ways (duh), and the next few missions were my favorite in the game so far, especially "Stowaway". So I'm done at the airfield and have finished the first LV Woozie mission. Tomorrow I'll try "Explosive Situation" again. I still need to do the Wang Cars and Trucker missions as well.

It's hard to kill a horse with a flute (AaronHz), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 09:57 (twenty years ago)

Trucker missions are fun but the last one had me swearing like a trooper most of the time.

I finally beat 'the cock' from Los Santos beach although the second mission that goes all the way around the island is a bitch, I just don't have the energy left for the final run down The Strip and everyone overtakes me.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 10:07 (twenty years ago)

70% complete, but I'm focussing on the gang wars at the moment. Man those Vacos come at you like the damn Luftwaffe.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 10:29 (twenty years ago)

as i mentioned before, i think i've done everything but the last storyline missions now (still on the casino missions actually). i've sorta stalled out though, today I just went back and played GTA3 instead - i've never finished it. it's been a couple years, but it seems a hell of a lot easier than I remember it being.

LOCKER ROOM TOWEL FIGHT: THE BLINDING OF LARRY DRISCOLL (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 10:35 (twenty years ago)

gta3 is such a great game, but it took me about 5 retries to get 100% due to a horrible bug that kept stopping me from completing the very last phone mission on the third island.

A shame they couldn't have the 'litter' effect in San Andreas.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 11:05 (twenty years ago)

man i'm on about 25% in 34 hours or something, but hey, at least i finally got to the catalina missions, just like a month after most people...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Finally went back and did all the schools which were relatively easy, except for that City Slickers bullshit. But I found an easy way to do it that involved driving down the railroad tracks rather than on the street...Did all the import//export missions and finally flew back to Las Venturas to hook up with Millie and the bitch STILL AINT FUCKING HOME!

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Do you need to make a certain amount of progress before a girlfriend becomes, eh, available? Or am I just looking in the wrong places? Cause I'm beginning to need......relief. And I don't do hookers.

Yours,

Carl

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 12:25 (twenty years ago)

I had forgotten about the litter effect --

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm soooo far behind on this! I'm struggling with Just Business and one of OG Locs where you need to go to that dudes house and steal his rhymes. I keep getting sidetracked, if somebody gets in my way when I'm driving I follow them and wreak revenge.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Rumpy, you're about 3 missions off denise "becoming available" (really it's not worth the wait ;))

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh well. Carl's just so handsome - especially running bare chested through the rain. If I was twenty years younger....

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I found some flowers on the roadside yesterday.

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm on the Wu Zi and the Toreno missions in San Fierro. I finished the driving schools, though I still have a few bronze and silver medals to upgrade. The Zero mission that I'm on is the first one, "Air Raid". Last time I played it, I shot Zero instead of the airplanes and felt a great feeling of satisfaction when the title appeared saying that the mission had failed because Zero was dead.

I have a really, really, really dumb question. It's a question so dumb that none of the GTA:SA sites will answer it because it's apparently so dumb: How do you take snapshots in San Fierro?

Seriously, I walk up to the camera icons and they disappear. No snapshots recorded. I stand where the rotating cameras are and take a picture. No snapshots recorded. I take a picture of the rotating camera itself. No snapshots recorded. I'm about ready to spraypaint the damned fool things.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 14:50 (twenty years ago)

take a photograph of a unique area, you should see a round spinning purple camera icon somewhere, zoom in until its visible in through your lense and press O. That should be done.

The icons only appear visible though a camera lense.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 15:11 (twenty years ago)

for instance, in the train station opposite your Cesar garage in San Fierro. Pick up the camera and then make your way to the platforms. Use the camera to view and look up at the ceiling, there should be a purple icon there. Sometimes you have to zoom in a bit for it to register, but it does tell you when you have successfully snapped one.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago)

So the floating cameras are clues that you're near a purple icon? I'll have to check that out later. I appreciate the help, Ste.

(I just asked the question "So the floating cameras are clues that you're near a purple icon?" on the internet. I need to go for a walk outside or something.)

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I hate flight school so very very much.

P.S. Those Zero missions don't advance the story at all, so if you get too frustrated with them, just move on. Those missions are crap.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 15:50 (twenty years ago)

The floating cameras are pick-up icons, like weapons etc. If you don't have a camera, they give you one with some number (60?) of snaps, and if you have one, they act as ammo, giving you 60 more snaps. They don't really have to do with where the snapshots (spinny purple things) are.

One of the missions explains this, I think.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 16:52 (twenty years ago)

I may splurge for the Brady Game Guide today at lunch. It's about the size of the OED.

ahem, users of lesser systems:
12/16/04 - Good news for PC and XBox owners: GTA San Andreas is coming to both on June 7, 2005. Source: IGN.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Andrew, a lot of the spinny purple things are very close to cameras though. It may just be a coincidence.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 19:52 (twenty years ago)

And you can only see them by looking through the cameras. I've been useless at finding them so far, I did decide to find all the tags, oysters, snapshots and horseshoes without a guide, but the snapshots are making me consider abandoning that plan.

lupine lupin (lupinelupin), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 19:59 (twenty years ago)

OK guys, having done the casino heist mission, here's a tip for Millie: just kill her. You can then go and break into her house to get the card.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Are you ready to party? These boys are. The lead singer just got out of therapy and is ready to date your sister.

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 02:31 (twenty years ago)

millie's easy to date if you feel like it though, just arrive at her house in the gimp suit and you'll automatically get a 10 percent relationship increase. i think i only had to do it 2 or 3 times before she gave me the card. I bought the guide btw, was totally worth it just for the maps of the snapshots/tags/horseshoes/oysters.

Hey, I heard that when you beat all of Toreno's missions the flamethrower/minigun/rpg/heatseaking RPG all spawn at his cabin. but, uh, I've checked a few times and have seen nothing??? Is this just a horrible, horrible rumor? :(

LOCKER ROOM TOWEL FIGHT: THE BLINDING OF LARRY DRISCOLL (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 03:36 (twenty years ago)

is that true about millie, cos it's doing my head?

lucifer, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 09:23 (twenty years ago)

if the cunt is ever home.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Rumpy, I'm about the only person reading this at a similar level to you, and that's only because I spent ALL yesterday playing it at my mate's house. The stealing the rhymes mission shouldn't be too complicated - stealth kill all the guards as you head to the studio, then either Uzi those motherfuckers on your way out or take it carefully from shadow to shadow picking off one at a time. On the way out you get a silenced gun off every guard you kill, too.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Also, just for all you fuckers who are currently on 95% but were once lowly paupers - I completed Wrong Side of the Tracks first go! Yay me!!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Should I post a link to the cheats that have just been published by Rockstar "for the festive season" or would that ruin everything?

haitch™ (haitch), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Markelby ,
i did the big smoke/tenpenny mission 1st go. when you've done that, i'll yay you. not before!

lucifer, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, which one was that? I got a few missions completed yesterday, but beer was drunk and I can't remember who told me to do what.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 14:23 (twenty years ago)

iM BACK TO LOS SANTOS NOW. SAD BECAUSE THE GAME IS COMING TO AN END.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 14:23 (twenty years ago)

it's the last one. it's a half hour of shooting, burning, chasing & running. i really was shitting it. have loads to do though, saved all the side missions like truck missions and plane and car races til last as i don't want the game to end. when it does, i'll do it as a fat bastard rather than the lean killing machine that is cj.

lucifer, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Did it involve shooting lots of dudes, including from the back of a motorbike? I have to admit I didn't - I only had one go, though, and my mate finished it on his second go and we moved on.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 15:51 (twenty years ago)

The final mission: (SPOILERS)

Steal a swat tank
Kill four floors worth of Ballas
Kill Big Smoke
Put fires out so you can leave a burning building
Chase Tenpenny all the way around Los Santos
Pull up to his bumper within about 15 seconds (a la the Cesar getting onto the tanker mission)
Re-enactment of the "Just Business" style of mission, except about fifteen times harder.
END

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Dom, where was the feeling in that?
So clinical man, no heart!

lucifer, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I actually tore up a little bit when it was finally over, especially the end credits...

Have you noticed that when you get into Sweet's car to start the mission, no matter when you do it, the song on the radio is always "Today Was A Good Day"?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Cheers Markelby. It took me ages to do Wrong Side of the Tracks, my bike kept performing insane stunts and then that fat bastard Smoke would get off, berate me and disappear into the ether before I got the chance to shoot him.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:04 (twenty years ago)

not noticed, i'll have a look tonight! tried to get gang members into a plane so i could jump out & see if they'd follow. i think they knew what i had in mind as they didn't get in. they did run alongside the plane though to wave me goodbye. such sweet boyz!

lucifer, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I completed Wrong Side of the Tracks first go! Yay me!!
Yeah, me too. I don't get why that one was supposed to be hard, maybe I just got lucky. Also as long as we're bragging, it got deleted but I did all those Zero missions. You know there's a little bonus minigame inside his shop after you beat those? You can fly the RC baron around and see how many vans you can blow up in the time limit. I think I did about 12 before I got bored and made it self destruct.
I'm on the first LV Tenpenny mission right now, "Misappropriation", but I'm splitting time between this and MGS3, Halo 2 etc.

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Dom> I always had 'Express Yourself' when getting into Sweet's car. The dialogue going to the mission was amazing though I did feel like things were getting sorted.

*maybe spoiler*

seeing Carl punch Zero in the face after the bank heist mission made me grin like a fool. Especially since I gave up on the very first Zero mission after about 60+ attempts.

fractal (fractal), Thursday, 23 December 2004 01:24 (twenty years ago)

i went to kill millie because i couldn't be arsed "dating" her and she dumped me! the cheek of it. then to make matters worse, i thought i best make an effort with denise and she come out and dumped me. ah well!

lucifer, Thursday, 23 December 2004 10:32 (twenty years ago)

WTF - all this micromanaging bs with girlfriends and eating and clothes - it's a little too sims for me. Just give me a rampage where I have to light 20 peds on fire in 2 minutes while the Columbian cartel is shooting at me and I'm happy. GTAIII was the best.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 23 December 2004 14:24 (twenty years ago)

577th have you played san andreas? if yes you must know it's better than III & VC. i do agree though, all the repeat dating things get boring. they could have used the programme space to have more murderous missions.

lucifer, Thursday, 23 December 2004 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Hey Luc, yeah, I've finished all 3. I just miss Head Radio, that's all.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 23 December 2004 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Boyz ii men, boyz ii men, boyz ii men, boyz ii men

Chorus:
Motownphilly back again
Doin’ a little east coast swing
Boyz ii men going off
Not too hard, not too soft

It’s long overdue but now
Philly’s slammin’
Boyz ii men, abc, bbd
The east coast family
Never skipped a beat, na
While cooling on south street
Jet black benz, plenty of friends
And all the philly steaks you can eat

Back in school
We used to dream about this everyday
Could it really happen?
Or do dreams fade away, yeah
Then we started singin’
They said it sounded smooth
So we started a group and here we are
Kickin’ it just for you

Chorus

Michael bivins’ rap:
Yo these four new jacks is real
Smooth on the harmony tip
Nate, mike, shawn, and wan
You know the mentality
Keep flippin’ the gift

The spotlight is on us now
Watch us do this
Da da, daaa da da, da da da da da da
Live and direct from philly town
Rap and hype and we can get down
We are ready to roll
So now the world will know that we flow

Back in school we used to dream about this everyday
Could it really happen?
Or do dreams fade away
Then we started singing them
They said it sounded smooth
So we started a group and here we are
Kickin’ it just for you

Chorus

Boyz ii men, boyz ii men, boyz ii men, boyz ii men, boyz ii men, boyz ii men
Then we started singing them
They said it sounded smooth

Michael bivins’ rap:
Now check this out
One day back in philly
Four guys wanted to sing
They came up to me I said
What’s your name? (boyz ii men)
Ya know what I’m sayin’
Than I said alright fellas
Well let me see what you can do
And then wan said
Yo mike, check this out
See if this one moves you

Doom doom doom da da, doom doom doom da da
Da di da di da da, da da, daa daa daa
Doom doom doom da da, doom doom doom da da
Da di da di da da, da da, daa daa daa ohh

Chorus

Boyz ii men, boyz ii men, boyz ii men
Boyz ii men, abc, bbd

(Repeat until head explodes)
THANKS A LOT SAN ANDREAS

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Friday, 24 December 2004 00:50 (twenty years ago)

can someone please explain to me why my dad(who of course has only heard about this game from the THINK OF THE CHILDREN reports on right wing talk radio) thinks that THIS game is unacceptable(e.g. randon violence), but that Call of Duty(WWII FPS that came out last year) is acceptable("
'cuz it's part of a way" e.g. only gov't sanctioned violence on a mass scale is alright)? you can cap germans with an M1, but you can't run them down.

57 7th is COMPLETELY BATSHIT. I spent the last week beating GTA3, and it was excruciating all the way through. I appreciate San Andreas so much more now.

LOCKER ROOM TOWEL FIGHT: THE BLINDING OF LARRY DRISCOLL (Adrian Langston), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago)

HA.

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:16 (twenty years ago)

I mean jesus, I needed multiple attempts for almost every one of those staunton/shorevale missions. And what the hell happened to Donald Love?? I WANT TO SNAP MY DISC IN HALF NOW.

LOCKER ROOM TOWEL FIGHT: THE BLINDING OF LARRY DRISCOLL (Adrian Langston), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:19 (twenty years ago)

My enabler fiancee gave me GTA3 for Christmas. I had never played this game before, only San Andreas. WHOA. It's like playing a video game based on that "When It Began" video by the Replacements.

And OH! Catalina's new mute boyfriend at the race. hardee har har.

Pleasant Pains, Monday, 27 December 2004 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Maybe its the nostalgia already but GTA3 just seemed like it was huge enough, but you could still get your head around and know where you were going most of the time. SA is too huge, unless you devote some really serious time to it. And III's homemade radio stations really are good - esp. 'Forever,' 'Fade Away,' 'Stripe Summer,' etc.

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Eugh, the radio only made it so much harder to finish GTA3. The two dance stations were ok, as was the classical station, but I ended up playing most of the game on mute. I dunno, SA isn't too big for me, but i DID devote some pretty serious time to it. Though I think it would've been infinitely cooler if instead of three cities, it was one HUGE city. just doing Los Angeles on a san andreas-sized map would be incredible.

LOCKER ROOM TOWEL FIGHT: THE BLINDING OF LARRY DRISCOLL (Adrian Langston), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:42 (twenty years ago)

I predict D. Love will resurface in the next iteration.

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Maybe its the nostalgia already but GTA3 just seemed like it was huge enough, but you could still get your head around and know where you were going most of the time. SA is too huge, unless you devote some really serious time to it

spent this afternoon driving on long motorcycle journeys across the map (not hit the las vegas place yet) and was just gob-smacked at the breadth of mood and atmosphere and ambience the game encompasses...

stevie (stevie), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I think it would've been infinitely cooler if instead of three cities, it was one HUGE city. just doing Los Angeles on a san andreas-sized map would be incredible.

OTM. I really wish that Los Santos actually looked like LA. They've could've split San Andreas up into 3 amazing games if they wanted to, using the same gameplay but just developing the maps to a higher level of realism.

I'm serious ... Ti-i-i-i-im (deangulberry), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:51 (twenty years ago)

EXACTLY. instead of 3 dinky little cities, try and approximate a real city. Though it just occured to me that TRUE CRIME already attempted a full recreation of L.A., though I know not how good a job was done.

LOCKER ROOM TOWEL FIGHT: THE BLINDING OF LARRY DRISCOLL (Adrian Langston), Monday, 27 December 2004 20:00 (twenty years ago)

B-but where would the bizarrely funny toilet humor be?

I have a lot of love for GTA3, and its brief crossover with San Andreas made me want to pick it up again. Pros: no sim bollocks, including being able to shoot/drive as well as you can from the start, better story & characters (no coincidence that most of my favourite parts of San Andreas were returning characters) Cons: I suspect that the lack of climbing and swimming would drive me crazy in five minutes flat. Also, I'm probably glossing over how long the offroad/sniping Columbians missions actually took me, but then I'm not looking forward to finishing the really fiddly San Andreas missions either.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:15 (twenty years ago)

"Joey Lips is stuffing his fat face in the St Marks Bistro..."

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:25 (twenty years ago)

"including being able to shoot/drive as well as you can from the start"

ie. shittily from beginning to end. the auto-aim is garbage and there's no real manual aim to speak of. and the weapon skills in SA can be collectively maxed in like 10 minutes!!! the gameplay is most of what made GTA3 unbearable for me, everything from the poor, poor vehicle physics to the unsophisticated melee action just made everything 100 times harder than it needed to be. "better story and characters" WHAT FRESH HELL. CJ is possibly the most convincing character ever to appear in a game, while GTA3 basically had no protagonist at all. The story is a bit crap, but it's pretty refined stuff next to GTA3 (and most video games ever) and at least manages some clever moments (james woods) and is even genuinely moving on a few occasions. tho I was sort of bummed that they couldn't come up with better lines for ppl like Sam Jackson, what's the point of having him in yr game if you just give him bum expository dialogue??

AIDS BENEDICT (Adrian Langston), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:30 (twenty years ago)

Dude, he's the protagonist. He's not supposed to have a character.

The story is about equal, and the characters are much better. El Burro, Donald Love, the japanese gangsters. Hell my favourite original character in San Andreas is Ran Fa Li, and he doesn't say anything.

I will concede the rest of your points, pending me playing GTA3 again. Which won't happen, because I sold my copy to make sure that I didn't decide to just play one more time, one more time.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 27 December 2004 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Donald Love was pretty great (I mostly attribute that to Kyle McCouahgdlsgin though). Haha, EL BURRO??? El Burro was more crazy-accent than actual character!! C'mon man, no love for Woozie? Or Ryder ("I'm a fuckin' genius!!")?? Asuka in gta3 was cool, but she's the only one who stands out in my mind.

AIDS BENEDICT (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 01:49 (twenty years ago)

I would like to point out that when I wrote that, I had completely forgotten about Maccer, and that five minutes afterwards, I played Cut Throat Business, with his paean to Margaret Thatcher. I would like to offer a complete apology. Also I'd like to stop laughing some time soon.

El Burro was more than an accent, he was a man, a man who carved a career out of pure filth! On balance, I'd rather play a new El Burro mission than a new Woozie mission. Except that I just remembered the "pick up all the mags" mission, which drove me crazy.

Catalina's much better in San Andreas, particularly the way her relationship with Carl keeps developing thorugh the game, so to speak.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 02:15 (twenty years ago)

fuck, I forgot about maccer!!! "I cant move my legs, I'VE WANKED THE USE OUT OF THEM--"

AIDS BENEDICT (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 04:04 (twenty years ago)

that pick up the mags mission was easy, I did it in one go!! TURISMO, on the other hand...

AIDS BENEDICT (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 04:05 (twenty years ago)

We are very different people, you and I (I loved Turismo).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 12:39 (twenty years ago)

the poor, poor vehicle physics to the unsophisticated melee action
WAH!

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Admittedly having since played vc and sa (where the vehicle handling has been improved) the cars in gta3 can seem a bit 'slippy'. Somehow though they're still fun to drive and put many other driving games to shame.

I so prefer the radio stations in gta3 to that of SA, 'fade away' and 'rising to the top' being my two fave songs of gta history, (Flock of Seagulls 'ran so far away' bringing up a close third)

I like the atmosphere of gta3 too, it's deliciously gritty with a populated city of devilishly naughty citizens. SA feels a lot less chaotic.

Having said that I am currently highly addicted to gang wars and being the 'king of the grove' in San Andreas, what with my expensive Didier Sachs green suit with matching green caper hat. Respect well and truly due.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 30 December 2004 16:44 (twenty years ago)

where is didier sachs?

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Tried the two-player mode last night with my fiancee. I was CJ and she was the stooped bald hillbilly. We took turns kissing each other and having a fistfight through the town ala Every Which Way But Loose. We had to quit after she squatted in one of the intersections and I accidentally hit her with the satellite news van. It was too much.

They should use the "kill 15 pedestrians in two minutes" rampage missions in marriage counseling. After arguing for awhile ("Will you get over here?" "I can't. The heels won't let me run as fast."), we succeeded in completing five levels before getting bored.

Pleasant//Plains, Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Could the fact that I've been waring the joke glasses/nose the whole game have anything to do with my stagnating respect level?

Steely Zan (AaronHz), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

My Didier Sachs threads (and also my Victim threads, which is next door to Didier Sachs) have seriously upgraded Carl's look.

I really don't want to acquire 35% of the gang land in Los Santos. I mean, sheesh.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

The last gang territory is completely taking the piss.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

I found Barbara and dated her to 100% but the cop outfit she gave me doesn't seem to give Carl the authority like it did in Vice City. Is there no way of getting into the Naval Base, Area 69 or even the Police Compound without getting wanted levels?

Andrew, which part is it? And why is there a gang territory in Las Venturos?

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Is there? Is it like the one north of San Fierro that belongs to you anyway?

The last gamg territory is one block of sidewalk. Not road, sidewalk.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

Yes that's the one I meant. I don't see the point of it as you can't start gang wars in LV or SF.

I thought I had all the territories now but I will check my percentage covered tonight.

I was putting it down to having played the previous games so much that I thought San Andreas was a lot easier, but I generally believe it's a lot less frustrating than those games anyway. Oh apart from City Slicker.

Found myself having great fun bulldozing trees down hills and watching them bob back up-right in the water.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 9 January 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I finally got round to having a decent run at this game last night after having it since Christmas. I'm absolute shit at it. The car handling seems to have been fucked up as I can't control slides properly. Might be something to do with all this skill attaining business (my shooting skill went up to gangsta level after I emptied a clip into a parked car :-/ )

Brilliant game all the same. The combat & shooting seem more smooth and intuitive and some of the dialogue cracks me up. Climbing and swimming are big improvements.
Shame it's taken me about 4 hours to do about 5%.

Don't think much of the threads in the first shop (Binko or summat?). Got some nice tattoos and big muscles to make up for it but my sex appeal is still very low.

Got down to the black on my first pool game then the fucker cleared up 5 balls to win $100 off me, so I beat him to death with a pool cue.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Sunday, 9 January 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Busting cues over heads is where it's at.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Yes that's the one I meant. I don't see the point of it as you can't start gang wars in LV or SF.

take a plane - i recommend the AT-400 - and just fly way the fuck out

after maybe two hours (just leave something pressing down the "go" button and have lunch) jump out into the water, and then intentionally drown.

when you re-spawn, boom, the other two cities will have gang territory.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

brother bought me the walkthrough book for christmas (his way of telling me i suck i think) and i spent 8 hours the other day painting over all the tags. only(!) took 6 hours to get through them all the first time (mostly on foot, the mounting / dismounting thing got old quickly) BUT the paint ran out during one of them and it didn't register so when i thought i'd finished i hadn't. had to go through them all again and the 76th one was the incomplete one. still, get me out the house. oh, wait...

koogs (koogs), Monday, 10 January 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 10 January 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Had a few lengthy sessions with the game in the past week, and now I'm at the End of the Line, which I think is the final mission to the main storyline. I still have a lot of other things to complete, like the zero missions and a few others in San Fierro. I actually have quite a few things to do yet.
The gang wars are nice to have again, though every time I went out with Sweet he'd stand in front of me. So I'd shoot him a couple of times.

the book explains all the weighted factors that influence the sex-appeal - clothing, haircut, muscles, last vehicle used (which varies according to state of that vehicle). i'm guessing that last thing is the one that is fluctuating given that the others change less rapidly. don't turn up on dates in concrete mixers and you should be ok 8)

I finally got across the Garver Bridge "legally" this weekend. I was able to drive around and explore the desert, beeping my horn to make my Roadrunner imitation.

I'm still amazed by how vast this game is. The fiancee was playing "Vice City" recently, and it seemed so claymated.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Aye, as far as I can tell, sex appeal is mostly about the car.

Anyone else have that glitch where the girlfriends just never seem to be at home when you come to visit? Worryingly similar to real life, to be honest.

So did everyone beat the game, or just get bored of talking about it? I finally finished the main missions a few weeks ago, but still have quite a few things left to do (import/export, races, zero, possibly dating the girlfriends, etc).

Jonathan (Jonathan), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I still haven't progressed past a couple of missions... I just grab an offroad motorcycle and go for big airs out off the hills.

I realized that I actually had become old when I was describing GTA to my wife (we were watching the L&O episode about it). As I described what the game was all about, I realized that I found the entire series really, really revolting.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

I've actually been thinking of reviving this thread as well. I forgot how I was having to scroll past everything in fear of reading spoilers. But for a long time, this was my favorite thread.

Since I last posted, my grandmother passed away. I got married. I hosted my bride's family from outside of the country. There was the honeymoon. Been going back and forth to Memphis for immigration stuff. Bought a dog. Spring has come. We have a new van now.

And the other day, I was sitting in the parking lot of a Mapco, looking at a boarded-up building next door. "Fool's Gold" came on the iPod, and I started thinking about from which corner I'd get C.J. to scale the wall. I stopped playing right as I opened up Vegas. It's about time I get started again, but maybe I'll wait until the weather gets just a little bit warmer.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

I stopped playing it. It got kind of boring.

BRO DIDDLEY (deangulberry), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I ever found the game boring. Frustrating, yes, but never boring. The boring parts, like girlfriends, are easy enough to skip over completely. The final mission (of the main story) took me about 15 tries, and I got so frustrated that I walked away from the game for a few weeks, but then came back and finished it. I had a huge sense of accomplishment that night.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

WELL I GOT BORED JONATHAN

BRO DIDDLEY (deangulberry), Monday, 28 March 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I finished the missions awhile ago and am working through the races slowly. I'll probably search out the hidden stuff after that.

57 7th (calstars), Monday, 28 March 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
The Triads and CJ robbed Caligula's last night. It made me think about how even though some missions start off so intimidating, where I sit there and think "Oh, fuck, there's no way", they're still so fun to play that it doesn't really bother me that much when I have to play through it a couple of times.

I was so close to finishing the Caligula's mission last night, but as CJ was scampering across the roof, I made him miss the parachute and fell off the building. Whoops. Had to do the whole thing over again, but I didn't care.

Also finally won the 8-track race in Los Santos. I had failed and failed that thing when I first started playing, and then forgot about it. It was a lot easier to drive there after having won all the road races. I just wish the monster truck had brakes.

On second thought... no I don't!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I finished the main mission some time ago but it's still keeping me occupied with the hidden items jaunt. I've also still got to find 26 unique jumps and not yet done the Paramedic mission.

I can't wait to complete this game 100% when it will give me infinite ammo. The shits so gonna hit the fan when that happens.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I checked my stats the other night. It said "17 of 50 Unique Jumps Found" and "11 of 50 Unique Jumps Completed". I was like, "Oh, shit. How could I have discovered six unique jumps and then just ride away from it like that?

I finished the paramedic mission, the stats even say so. However, damned if I can tell a difference in health now.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that will haunt you. Particularly since every jump still goes slo-mo even after you 'get it', and some of them are completely finicky.

I'm playing through with help of a big cheaty 100% walkthrough. I finally finished the NRG challenge!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Meanwhile, the vigilante missions are a bitch in the same area since sometimes you have to go through Area 69 and the men in black come after you.

Taxi missions were easy. Paramedic missions were easy in that town that Ken is talking about. Vigilante missions are a fucking bitch for me.

And speaking of that town, I really got fed up with that old stooped woman in the white shirt and cowboy hat who would take ALL FRICKIN' DAY to load herself up into the ambulance. Thanks bye.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 6 June 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I ended up with 99 out of 100 tags too, and just gave up trying for 100%. I did everything but the oysters, tags (well, one of them, at least), photos, and completion of the burglaries. 98.4% was enough for me to enter season mode in NBA 2K5 and start making my trades.

I don’t recommend this if you have a short temper like me.

Starting a new game because you’re bored of looking for horseshoes and shell things, then saving it over your 96% completed game by mistake.

Worst part of it is having to do that fucking dancing on the beach mission a thousand times again. I hate dancing in real life, never mind having to do it in a game.

Starting a new game because you’re bored of looking for horseshoes and shell things, then saving it over your 96% completed game by mistake.

gaaaaaaaaaaaah, that's grim.

i actually make a backup every so often. which is a bit sad considering i've only completed 20% :)

as for cool and weird ... all of it. it's GTA, innit? it's funnier than vice city, and (IMHO) more immersive. i didn't finish vice city before starting this one, and i'm not that bothered about going back.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Up north of the big shopping mall, there's a big submarine under the water. You have to line up w/the left hand side of the mall in a plane, helicopter or boat, then go directly north. when you get to the submarine, if you turn 90 degrees right and head off that way, there's another big sunken ship, like the one down near the docks and stilt houses. There's no reason for it to exist, like it doesn't feature in any mission or anything, it's just kind of there. The first time I happened across it, it really creeped me out. (likewise the big sunken ship by the stilt houses, I was like UGH when I saw it)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 9 June 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

There's some stuff like that in San Andreas, including a property that's fantastically expensive, quite remote, and completely useless. Nothing happens for miles.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 9 June 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

i've not seen anything interesting underwater in San Andreas, apart from the odd bits of sea weed and starfish. Although crashing your huge AT-400 into the sea and then swimming down to view the wreck is quite fine.

Andrew, you've done 69 of the unique jumps ?!! thats rather good.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 9 June 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

i've not seen anything interesting underwater in San Andreas

dolphins
turtles
submarine
getting cops to follow you into the water and watching them drow's great. am i sick?

driving cars off cliff's into the water is good as well.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 9 June 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

the submarine isn't underwater really is it, it's docked.
but i did forget about all the fishes and dolphins and stuff.

[spoilers]
for hidden stuff like the sub in VC, there's the pit in the desert in Las Venturos with the dead bodies in. the UFO cafe with the mysterious map and photos in the back room. the sign near the large Golden Gate looking bridge which lists game facts about how large the bridge is and how many polygons/textures etc it took to make. the ghost town. probly lots more i haven't even seen yet.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 9 June 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Ghost town? I know there's something like that in GTA3, where the little set location for the opening scene is over on the other side of the steep hills on the 3rd island somewhere.

IN "Vice City" I had something like a 3-star wanted level, and I (accidentally) drove the car into the sea. I pressed "F", and Tommy wound up standing on the roof of the car, which floated in the water. Watching hundreds of cops then driving & jumping into the water was almost as funny as when the cop tried to put the tyre spiker under the tank.

My dear wife's favourite trick in gta3 is when that lifter bridge to the third island is open, and there's a cop car in front of you, she likes to drive into the back of it so the cop car drives off the edge into the water.

there's fishes, turtles, jellyfish, a dolphin and a shark in "VC" as well. I like the shark!

I'm going to have to get this, I can see. I'm trying for 100% in "vice City", so I'll get it after I get close to that. 97 hidden packages found so far!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 9 June 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 9 June 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

reading this thread makes me feel like such a dobber. i'm still arsing about in the badlands, getting cross about having failed "farewell my love" a couple of times. i really need to do some serious-ass playing of this game over the next few weeks.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I even printed out a map, even went to the places that I know I hit at least once before. Nevertheless, I've got only 48 out of 50 oysters. That, and one of my tags is apparently half-sprayed since I've checked out all 100 and they were all there. (The game says that I have 99/100.)

I've got two cheats saved onto my current game. I downgraded my wanted stars twice I think, early in the game when I was scared to get busted and too far away from a pay n' spray. That shit better not be fucking with me now.

I heard of a Mad Max/Road Warrior mod planned for he PC. If done well, this would shit all over the original game as it is.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 10 June 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

Has anybody managed that unique jump over the Sphinx's paws? It's nigh on impossible.

You weren't kiddin, spent ages on it last night. Can’t seem to get enough speed, I tried it on a few bikes and a few cars with nitro.
No joy.

Did some gambling on the horses last night, I now have $20004643.

Has anyone got 100% on the gang territories, if so, what’s the secret?
The ballas don’t show themselves when I hang around.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 10 June 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

my secret was the AKA as you'd get bucket loads of ammo from previous gang fights. Try not to get caught out in the open, the gang waves spawn in 3 seperate groups surrounding you then they close in. get a position where you can get your back to a wall and just target them as they come.

I hated the gang wars at first when they were presented to me in the missions but now I love them to bits.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 10 June 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

I’ve no trouble winning on the gang wars. It’s just the few territories I have left to win over, ballas aren’t around to start on. Is there a way to entice them out?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 10 June 2005 08:02 (twenty years ago)

nah you've just gotta keep trying really.

went on a killing spree last night, my crim rating has gone up to 25038 Soldier.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 10 June 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

james fucking woods.

g e o f f (gcannon), Friday, 10 June 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm afraid to download this with b!tt0rrent, but I'm too poor to buy it. suck.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 10 June 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

ok I just checked and the ramp near the Sphinx paw is NOT a unique jump, but why did the camera change view when my mate played it?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

I have discovered some unique jumps in the most backasswards of ways. Drivin' down the road, hit a ramp, all of a sudden I fall off my bike, everything's in slow motion, eat some dust, earn $500.

My favorite one is in San Fierro, up on top of the hill near the Lombard Street entrance. It's where I take Katie on our dates. The other day, I hit it in a police car that was on fire, and the slow-mo alternate angle was fucking awesome.

I'm really jealous of that thirty second replay thing that the PCers are going to get.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I just got it for Xbox, and it's a little disappointing, though I've just gotten started. The graphics are super bad. Even worse than Vice City, I'd say, though the "acting" by the polygon characters is much, much better. When do you think Rockstar will revist it's 1998-quality game engine? God knows they must have the money at this point.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Saturday, 11 June 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

I got the PC version last week, and once again I'm stunned by a GTA game's enormousness and its verisimilitude. This game is too fucking deep with stuff to do and my first-person-shooter and driving skills so modest that I'm forced to treat it as something like a open-ended game along the lines of The Sims: it has short-term and mid-term goals, but for all intents and purposes, no long-term ones, 'cause they're far too far away for me to even think about.

I have a few annoying problems with the driving, much of which is probably totally my fault. This game provides me with some concrete examples of my miserable hand-eye coordination, like when I consistently press the wrong side of the joypad to steer if the car is upside down in my visual field. But the default view is such that if I make a sharp U-turn, the virtual camera goes deep down to the ground and to the side, and consequently I can't see where the fuck I'm going. While I haven't done any methodical research on the other view options, they don't seem to be any better. Also, does anybody know what exactly happens when your driving skill improves? Does it mean that the controls of any car you drive gets less wonky?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 13 June 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

if you hack around in the pc files enough, you should be able to improve your car-handling skills.

i have yet to play this game.

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Monday, 13 June 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

i got this for PC at the weekend. currently on the catalina missions. driving that rig around without diconnecting the trailer was a bit gnnnngh. shall try again tonight. awesome game though.

so pleased i didn't cop out and by a PS2 for this. 12x10 with 6xAA makes even these dodgy textures look nice.

any tips for non-trailersnapping action?

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 13 June 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

mmm GTA with Ansio and AA.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 13 June 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

g o s l o o o w l y ... then HAMMER IT on the straights.

Also, does anybody know what exactly happens when your driving skill improves? Does it mean that the controls of any car you drive gets less wonky?

AFAIK you can corner/hit stuff without spinning out of control so badly.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 13 June 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

when i go o o s l o o w l y the two guys in the car shoot my trailer to shit.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 13 June 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

ah. what i did:

- get in the trailer and hook it up to start the mission.

- get out the trailer and shoot fuck out of the guy's car with the biggest gun you have. (getting out of the cab doesn't end the mission; i don't even think you get a timer.)

- get back in the trailer and nick off, s l o o o w l y.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

whee, i managed to finish the mission last night. they rammed my reig too many times and exploded, so i did the s l o o w l y thing and completed it with no bother.

next i did the liquor store (i think) which involves chasing cowboys on quad bikes. a bit of a bitch, but after a few attempts, i managed to take them all out. however, on the way back to collect the briefcases, my quad bike got severely smashed up. i got off it, ran across the road to collect the last briefcase, got about 10 yards away and all of a sudden: MISSION FAILED flashed up on the screen. i was like 'what the fuck?', and turned round to see Catalina under the wheels of a random station wagon. i nearly cried. i blew the shit out of it and quit.

how frustrating.

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

haha

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

i just received my xbox copy. can't wait to play this all over again

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

the liquor store mission fucking sucks. it isn't fun, just annoying. and catalina is a dreadful shot.

try doing it on a sanchez. as long as you drive into the mission marker on the bike, it should still be there when you come out of the store. jump off the quad bike, get on the sanchez ... it makes the whole thing several hundred times easier because you can actually go at a decent speed.

i haven't played this for ages now and really need to get back into it. i got hacked off with the "farewell my love" race (which you're going to come across any time now) and just started messing about and not bothering with missions etc. i need to get back into the game proper.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

okay i just played it a little at lunchtime on Xbox. I'm actually quite impressed with what they've done, after having played it for months on PS2. nice use of shadows too.

(i only attempted the first mission, the bmx one, and i failed. oh the shame)

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

I collected all the horseshoes last night using a map from www.gtawh.com.
Have any of you tried to collect tags, oysters etc without a map, I’m sure it’d be impossible?

On this site there’s the best cheat in the world, “cars float away”. You just nudge or crash into cars and they float away like there’s no gravity. When the car gets to a certain height, the passengers jump out to their death, brilliant. Also there’s a Vehicle of Death cheat, Any vehicle the player is using becomes invincible and gains the ability to instantly destroy anything it touches.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

I've not used a map, so far I have:

99 tags
48 snapshots
37 oysters
46 horseshoes

i don't think it's impossible, but it's getting harder to find the last ones. my flatmate found all snapshots and tags with no map either.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

i'm trying to get CJ fat to avoid being a cliche CJ. unfortuantely, my favourite method of transport is BMX, so it's kinda difficult. waaah.

did anyone bother with the girlfriend thing? that first girlfriend, gee, i can't even remember her name. couldn't be bothered with that, seemed too intrusive on the game. catalina on the other hand, i think i'd put in the time fot her - she loves the insane stunts i pull. everytime i flip out over a massive hill on a Sanchez she's like "i love you, carl!"
much better than that wet blanket one that wanted to do drive bys and called me up every 10 minutes.

er, yah.

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

a couple of them have their 'advantages', that's all I'm gonna say.

but yeah, fuck Denise!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

well, like i said, Catalina seems worth the effort.
"DRIVE FASTERRR!"
"OH CARL, YOU'RE CRAZY! I LOOOOVE J00!"
is much more satifsying than "why yo nevah call me no more? let's do a drive-by!"
'you missed your date with denise! she'll be mad' zzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZ

i'd happily do insane stunts all day without encouragement! icing on cake k thx plz.

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

well, like i said, Catalina seems worth the effort.

haha good luck with that one.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

99 tags
49 horseshoes
99 oysters

and that's with the map! Grrrrr.

My advice for that kind of stuff is to either do them all with the map or don't use the map - period. There's a tendency, especially with the oysters and horseshoes, where if you can't find one immediately, you think, "Oh, well, come to think of it, maybe I've already picked this one up."

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

i finally finished the Catalina missions, yay. am now in San Fiero. that bitch ditched CJ for the putz from GTA3! zuh!! no more crazy stunt encouragement. boooo.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

The best bit of this game is that my name is Carl. My housemate asked me how it knew my name. The "learn to fly carl" phone calls from Mr Woods really annoyed me after a while.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

on the xbox i noticed that the tags, once sprayed, don't show up as much as on the ps2 where they glow bright green. so i know i'm going to be double checking tags all the time on xbox, grr

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

so what are the system requirements for the pc version? will this run acceptably on my pc if vice city did? i have a crappy graphics card and since i don`t usually play any games i don´t think i´d upgrade just for this... is there any playable demo around or something?

whatever, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to wait till the end of the year to buy the pc version of this. There's all this stuff I want to do, and if I buy this, I'll do 0 of it.

Is there a turn-cars-into-submarines cheat for VC on PC, BTW? I'm sure I read somewhere that there was, but I can't find it in any cheat lists.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

Just started playing on XBOX the last few days, and the big jumo for me (last played III on a PC a few years ago) is the storyline and the characters.

I'm trying really hard not to set my heart on getting 100% on everything cos that'll lead to so much frustration.

Even one of the very early missions (rescuing a homie and his gf from some flats near you house) is getting annoying now I've tried it 15-20 time Grrr. Still I can always go do something else.

mei (mei), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

i finally finished the Catalina missions, yay

christ. you've only had it five minutes and you're further than i am. i've had it since ... actually, no, i'm not embarrassing myself like that.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

> 99 tags... and that's with the map! Grrrrr.

spent about 6 hours one day just doing all the tags followed by another two because one of them wasn't finished. not sure if it qualified as fun. the tags are easier than the other two objects because they remain where they are when you've done them so it's easy to check. HOWEVER, if the spray can runs out whilst you're tagging then you can't assume that the tag is finished. it may even look like it's done but may not register. the only way to be sure is to try and target it with the spray can - you can't focus on finished tags.

(it's also a very quiet activity as you tend to have to do if on foot so don't have access to any of the radio stations)

100 tags, 50 snapshots btw (snapshot map, the official one, i had was inaccurate, and numbers didn't tie up between map and pictures. grrr). haven't got to vegas yet though, haven't played it for months.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 16 June 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

so if I've half sprayed a tag it will stay like that and not reset to completely unsprayed, even after reloading my game? oh that might be something i need to check then.

but i may abandon my ps2 game now to start afresh on the xbox. It's quite satisfying just to see the fresh unsprayed tags in the city.

and now I'll know better to keep track of my unique jumps!

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 16 June 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

i am upset by lack of bicylces in San Fierro. in my desperation, i drove all the way to whetstone, stole a bicylce and rode it all the way back to my lock-up to put it in the garage, just so i could bunny-hop down the MASSIVE San Fierro hills. wheeeee! it's helping me get over the Catalina thing.

SF is MUCH more difficult that the first city. damn.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 16 June 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

yes those Zero missions, hmm. Enough to drive you to drink i fear.

If you're having issues with the Catalina break up thing why don't you just load up GTA3 and play that until the end, then you'll see how much of a bitch she is PLUS you get to skin her skanky ass.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

haven't tried the zero missions yet, haven't got the 20k needed to start them.

GTA3 was bugged to death on my PC.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 16 June 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

I still haven't completed the first Zero challenge, and I'm finished with the rest of the missions!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 16 June 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

So how the hell does one complete "Wrong Side of the Tracks" anyway? Since the gang members always seem to die in the same order no matter what I do, I'm beginning to suspect that you really can't position your bike relative to the train to take out a particular gang member. I think perhaps the "real" goal is to make sure you closely follow the train as much as possible: gang members are picked off one by one only after you reach certain time thresholds.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

No, I've definitely gotten them dead faster by getting to the right position (just right of the right hand train tracks) as quickly as possible and staying there and roughly level with the gang (you're right, Smoke doesn't aim for the nearest one, there is a definite order) for as long as possible. But it is really tough.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

No big whoop, but some of you PCers and new players may also want to check Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Announced

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Get the bike as far to the right of the train as you can manage, whilst still keeping up with the part of the train with the gangsters.

so 2 nights on the run i had dreams about San Andreas

Yesterdays was short: i was awoken in the morning by my house mate knocking at the front door as he'd forgotten his keys, but i fell back to sleep and then i dreamt that it was Sweet knocking at the door and my mission was to let him in.

Last nights was much more involved and was a full blown 5 star wanted level being chased by feds all across the mutherfookin countryside into a scrapyard. I remember looking up into the sun and watching the trees strobe in the light and thinking how great the graphics were.

ahh.

take a plane - i recommend the AT-400 - and just fly way the fuck out

after maybe two hours (just leave something pressing down the "go" button and have lunch) jump out into the water, and then intentionally drown.

when you re-spawn, boom, the other two cities will have gang territory.

am i the only one who's amazed that this WORKS?!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 27 June 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

Argh. I got a new PC, or "rig" as people call it, last week and have been drawn like water down a plughole into this thing. It's really, really good isn't it?

I've got to San Fierro and like many I didn't spend any real time on the gang war bit before I was whisked away, much to my annoyance. In fact I went a bit too headlong doing mission after mission to try and open up the other areas and now I've got San Fierro open I'm a bit disappointed really. There's a hole heap of things I wanted to do in Los Santos - which I suppose is set up to make you want to keep on playing after you finish the main storyline. San Fierro seems far less polished than Los Santos and a lot smaller than I hoped, although I've only just got there.

I'm very impressed with the way the being-stole-away bit makes you feel cheated - the emotional manipulation of this game is probably the best I've seen from anything I've played. Those two cheap sell-out mudderfokas. I went back to the much-changed Los Santos and spent a good 2 hours driving round killing every Baller I could find out of anger even though it served no purpose. Oh well at least now I've got better clothes from Fierro's shops.

I must say that I imagine some bits of it are utter hell on a PS2. The Russian mission and House Party for a start. Basically any FPS bits. It's telling when you go into the Firing Range and win the shootouts 20-1-1. The RPG bits haven't really been a problem - I've never really had to eat, I did 3 sessions in the gym near the start and am still on 75%-ish on muscle and stamina. I do run a lot though.

Currently at 25%ish with very little extraneous stuff done. Sporting Kid n' Play hair, denim jacket, rocking blue khaki's with a crease, grey boots, a yellow watch and dog-tags. I'd get a hat but the haircut is too good. Even made my own custom radio station with appropriate Hip-hop (and Groove is in the Heart). God I'm really into this :)

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Monday, 27 June 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

San Fierro, on the whole, seems a LOT less well-wrought than Los Santos. Maybe it's the glamour of grime: it's just too clean-looking.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 27 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and if you REALLY want to off anybody in LS, it's the hoodie-wearing whiteboy dealers. They're lousy shots and are loaded with cash, usually carrying about $1,000 - $2,000. Plus, they're the ones flooding LS with drugs, if you want to give the act some empty symbolism.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 27 June 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

My favorite passerby in the game is the possibly 'gay' African-American germophobe: "Mind if we don't shake hands?" "Have you tried the new aerosol disinfectant?" "WHERE ARE OUR CON-DOMS?"

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 27 June 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Driving around with Catalina is fun. Just the irritated, bewildered way she blurts out "WHERE the fook is this?!"

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 27 June 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and if you REALLY want to off anybody in LS, it's the hoodie-wearing whiteboy dealers.

or the black t-shirt wearing muthafuckas, a quick creep up behind them and one shot to the head. a very nice little $2000 earner

How am I supposed to beat the firefighter R3 mission? It is hard!

Leeeeee (Leee), Monday, 27 June 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

OK, I'm in.

c/n (Cozen), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

that's one thing about this game, and the entire series that tends to get glossed over in the media hype/consternation. This thing is FUNNY; bringing along DJ Pooh to help write it helped.

I mean, shit, even AXL is funny.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 27 June 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

that only really gets glossed over in the most no-fun of no-fun media though, surely.

c/n (Cozen), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

HA HA! I FINISHED THE ZERO MISSIONS IN LESS FIVE TRIES EACH!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

thank goodness for this thread. i put san andreas down for like 6 months, but now i'm back and into the san fierro missions - how long until i get to fly the planes, etc.?

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

If you are already in San Fierro and you haven't flown anything yet, break into the airport (drive a vehicle through the entrance of SF airport, down the the circular grassy area in the middle, and jump on the car to get onto the hut by the gate and just jump over the fence), steal the helicopter (it's over on the right - don't try nicking the planes, the game won't let you), then fly to Los Santos airport, land near the western end of the runway, and steal the learjet.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

I discovered last night the homage to Donkey Kong on the transport plane where you have to jump barrels - thought that was neat. That plane goes bloody high - after you jump out you really need to freefall for a while - I ended up parachuting down for about 7 minutes (which was very relaxing, but still).

Also, how does one improve one's gambling skill? Playing the slots and video poker machines? Or anything more specific? I wanna play big money roulette!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

put on big stakes, winning lots i think.

i never realised the donkey kong thing, i think i was always avoiding the barrels by hiding in the sidings.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

work colleague has been playing this all last week on his days off, he's not stopped talking about it this morning. if you listen to yourself when describing moments from this game it just sounds barmy.

"park a car near the wall, climb onto the wall, walk along, drop down, get in the jet, fly to and high above the mountain, parachute down. Enjoy the view!"

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

collecting the horseshoes will up your gambling skill, i believe.

i recall quite enjoying that hijacking mission, but I opened my chute as soon as CJ jumped out of the plane which, yes, resulted in like a ten minute freefall.

CUT MY LIFE INTO PIZZAS ^_^ (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

a non-cheat cheat is to go to the off-track betting place, bet it all on the longest horse; if you lose, reload, if not, go save and do it again. i did it near the beginning when i thought everything would be MUCH more expensive than it was for the rest of the game (property etc) and was used to the Los Santos missions that pay dick, so i stopped when i had... 35 million dollars. ridokolos!! i would jack cars, completely trick them out just to drive across down to a mission and dump them. or nitro into walls until it blew up halfway there. so what!

g e o f f (gcannon), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

does anyone else think the wardrobe system is slow and sucks ass?

g e o f f (gcannon), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

i think half the hours i logged in the game were waiting for the goddamn wardrobe screens to load.

CUT MY LIFE INTO PIZZAS ^_^ (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

i figure they were covering for disk load times by having you walk in and out of the motherfucker and check yourself out every time, but something much more stripped down and paper-doll-y that you could flip thru would have made the clothes aspect of the game much more fun. i could have done with like 5x as many clothes too! (haha SA is just one big DOLLHOUSE isn't it) (plus there's the vaguely lovecrafty realization that all your wardrobes are ACTUALLY JUST ONE PLACE.)

g e o f f (gcannon), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

the one in los santos is in the middle of the north end of town underneath the freeway interchange, across the street from a big parking lot.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Slamvans are all over the place until you freakin' need one for your imports.

i never realised the donkey kong thing, i think i was always avoiding the barrels by hiding in the sidings.

There's so much in these missions that most people miss. For example, I've heard that if you FALL OUT OF THE PLANE during this mission, it cuts to a scene of CJ landing on the roof of a car and glass breaking all over the place.

I never fell out of the plane, so I missed out on this cool little montage.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

i've survived basejumping off of fake transamerica building sans parachute!

i managed to board a plane while fleeing in tierra robado (i was there prematurely, earning a 4 star wanted rating), and flew about nicely in a propeller driven hydro-plane. it reached extraordinary altitude before i was shot down by surface to air missiles over random military base. i can't find that plane again despite my Prisoner like attempts at reaching the proper inlet.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

I wish they'd made the out-of-car control a touch better this time round but it's only a minor quibble; the cars are a joy to handle.

I am completely hooked by now.

c/n (Cozen), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

That hydroplane is over by the dam.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

For the person who wanted to fly when in San Fierro - there's a crappy cropduster plane on a hill just south of SF airport. You can fly to LS airport with it and get a Shamal from there, or get a big vehicle and jump the LS airport fence with it if you're nearer to LS in the first place. Fly around for 10-20 minutes and your flying skill will be high enough for you to enter the airports on foot.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

One annoying thing is that whenever you enter any casino, they always seem to be playing that "Crossed the Tracks" song (you know: "...and I never crossed the tracks") and it's always cued up to the exact same moment!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

I always hear "The Big Payback" by James Brown.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

There's another hydroplane north of the flying strip. It's used in a mission, but it's there all the time.

I've not played much since Sunday but I'm up to the bit that made some people quit - Driving School + Supply Lines. Driving school seems hard but not too bad and I've had one half-hearted go at Supply Lines and it seems do-able.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

I can't seem to do the alley-oop in Driving School.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

i just got to Driving School last night, and i got stuck on the "doing laps" bit. I don't have the 30K to drop on Zero's store yet.

also, Deconstruction was fuckin' funny.

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh boy. Early yesterday evening I raptuously told a friend that this really was shaping up to be one of the best games I've played.

Then Flight School. Let me just explain something for the PS2 users - recreating holding the analog stick just a bit in one direction on keys would mean tapping the keyboard at an audible frequency. So instead you've got to veer and then correct which is pretty much like tossing a coin in the air until it lands on its side in terms of a challenge.

Now this is bad, but the fact you've got to do it to get any further and it takes you miles away from anything else that's interesting to do is extremely off-putting.

And just when I'd got my custom radio station perfected. Drive-by's to the strains of "Leather on my shoes" by Chris De Burgh could actually maintain my interest in the game if there was anywhere to do them.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Saturday, 2 July 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

i can't get my custom station to play...

kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 2 July 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

yup, i did:

makes the game FAR easier, and only $20.

Ste (Fuzzy), Saturday, 2 July 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

the good thing about being off work, recovering from tonsillitis, is that you have time to do things like keep saving/reloading until you win - say - $480,000 on the horses in the betting shop. hurrah.

right, i'm off to try these zero missions now. hmm.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

was there not a mission where you had to take a photograph of the submarine? playing it again i don't appear to have come across this yet, but maybe i imagined this.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

flight school ain't so hard. why does everyone moan about it? after getting the hang of controlling the plane, the missions were pretty pish. PC version, btw.

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

My secret discoveries regarding the Zero missions:

Mission #1: DON'T STOP FIRING. DO NOT LIFT YOUR FINGER FROM THE FIRE BUTTON.
Mission #2: The trick is to move the alter the plane's direction as little as possible.
Mission #3: After the first barrel is removed and the first plank placed, more-or-less concentrate on bombing the tanks.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I CAN'T DO FUCKING "AIR RAID"!

seriously, something like 20 goes so far. i get to about eight seconds left and the last transmitter gets bombed. i am close to smashing up not just the playstation but everything in the house.

still, at least this shows i've recovered from my tonsillitis, i guess.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

I never thought the flying missions were tough on the PS2. Matter of fact, you can get into airports without leaving Los Santos:

1) Get a car. Drive it to the Airport. There's a wall around back that's brick and just taller than the car. Drive the car up to it.

2) Jump on the car, then on the wall. You grab the top easily and go over. From here, there's a Cessna right in front of you and there's also a Lear Jet not far away.

3) Fly for awhile. Its something like an hour. Don't go into the airspace of the other cities though. If you want, you can get some tape, point the plane due south, tape the gas down, and go get dinner or whatever. After about a half hour or so, turn the plane around, repeat. You'll open up all those secret gang territories in San Fierro and Las Venturas while getting the mileage up enough that you'll probably be able to get your pilot's license. You'll then be able to enter Los Santos (and all the other airports as you gain access to those cities) through the security gate.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

btw, when I'd get bored, I used to take the Cessna (since it required the least amount of room to land or take off) and would try to land it places it shouldn't go, like the top of the mountain or on various buttes. Good times.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

i know, that's what's so strange about this game's pull: you can spend so much time doing utterly "useless" stuff. i tried for about an hour to land a helicopter on top of the golden gate bridge in a storm.

there's so much throwaway detail in the game, too. think of the hours programming bits of terrain you'll never walk over. and there are a LOT of cars. the 1st two games, each car more or less "represented" its class, except for the sports cars (a van, a family car, a station wagon, etc). but in SA i kept thinking i was jacking a familiar car and it was some slightly different thing (the alpha? the flash?)

speaking of representation: i think SA gets the balance of representation vs the place itself right in the city layouts. liberty city's downtown was only 4 x 3 blocks or something, but that stood in for a much larger downtown, same with all the other bits. everyone complained about vice city, "it's smaller!" well no it wasn't, there were more streets and a bigger game area, but 1 equaled 1 (kinda) (plus it was flat). none of the cities in SA are "real size" but it's big enough that the representation isn't as annoyingly apparent as in liberty.

g e o f f (gcannon), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

fuck the programmers and their clever fucking wasted detail. i just failed fucking "air raid" with TWO SECONDS LEFT.

i fucking hate this game :)

seriously: what am i doing wrong? i'm aiming in front of the planes (i'm getting a "doing well, don't get cocky" every single time i start); i'm concentrating on the ones furthest away ... it seems like no matter how much transmitter energy i have left come 30 seconds or so, bombs just start going off everywhere and i end up dead.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Shoot Zero. You won't win the mission, but hearing him say "Whoa, friendly fire!" before dropping dead is immensely satisfying.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

yes! i did that after about my tenth attempt.

after my 11th attempt i muted the sound.

after my - what, 30th? - go, i somehow, just managed to beat it. wow. i can now do the first minute and a half with my eyes shut; after that it just becomes free-for-all madness.

christ, hang on, i haven't saved. i've just left it on pause. erk.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

be thankful you don't have it on PC, where you can beat a hard mission only to have it crash or freeze-up.

kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

that did happen to me on the PS2, actually: right after i did that shitty-ass liquor-store mission for catalina. i was chugging happily back to her house to finish the mission and save, when - crunch - it froze.

vice city used to do it a bit too, IIRC.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Imagine having a spanking new graphics card that overheats and falls over all the time too (it's "passively cooled" which I'm beginning to think means "not cooled").

Despite my earlier aversions to flying I went back to Supply Lines and did it first try. The RC Helicopter mission afterwards is really, really good fun.

Basically I'm on a spree of going back and doing a lot of the side-stuff as I'm already fearing the end of the game (2 missions into LV). The Illegal Racing in San Fierro is very, very funballs.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

i already got freaked about my card overheating, so i'd keep the side of the tower case cracked open just for airflow.

kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm already fearing the end of the game (2 missions into LV).

You're definitely over with most of the missions, but you still have quite a few of them to go. Some of them are quite complicated.

mei (mei), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

there's a two-player icon in ganton, near the start. come out of the house, go up the street under the bridge, and after a couple of blocks (either just before or just after the bar) there's a building with a wire fence round it. hop in there and there should be a two-player roam icon.

if you've got denise as a girlfriend, there'll be one outside her house.

there's a rampage icon in pershing sq, IIRC.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 28 July 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
anybody still playing?

Great things to do #492: The crane magnet (san fierro docks)

i found great joy in playing with the magnet crane yesterday. I was being chased by a cop car, i was on the NRG bike, and i unwittingly past underneath the magnet (which was low). How I laughed as the cop car became stuck to the magnet and swung high into the air.

so i decided to try it myself. got a really fast car, fitted nitros, positioned magnet low down (car height) and just at the end of the dock. Took long long run up and drove stupidly fast under the magnet and wow I swung up so high!

The magnet doesn't appear to stick to a bike if you are riding it.

Word of warning though if you've positioned the magnet too high and the car never touches the ground again you won't be able to get out of the car. but i managed to wriggle my way off by turning left and right a lot.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 5 September 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 5 September 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

dunno. maybe. late june was a long time ago!
i'll find out and get back to you.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 5 September 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

I hate trying to get Gold! It's hard enough the first fucking time why do I have to go back (snivel, whine, etc)

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 5 September 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

i'm doing crap with finding the hidden stuff, the game is just flipping huge, but i intend to 100% this without the aid of guides. unlike my rascally house mate who has decided to use maps from the net to find his last horseshoes and oysters.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 5 September 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

I think I have gold on all except "take off, fly around and land again". I have most of the golds on the driving school. Some of the ones I'm missing are like the two-wheels thing, which is just a matter of trying it 10,000 times, there's no skill involved. But one of them is the "drive round in a circle for four laps", which is really annoying because I can't even get to the silver, and it's a matter of actual skill.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 5 September 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Your housemate is smart.

xpost

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 5 September 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

The jetpack is absolutely essential for finding the horseshoes.

Are you at least writing down where you find them, so that when you crack and get a guide, you'll be able to tell which ones you've done?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 5 September 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

i managed to get gold in the flight schools without too much miver, though i wus robbed a lot with the simple circle airfield and landing a lot of times.

It's the driving school that pains me.

xxxpost (yes! that stupid fcking "burn and lap" is sooo goddam hard)

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 5 September 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

i have gold on all the schools, i won't settle for anything less.

Circle the airstrip and land, very unforgiving, made me v angry.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 5 September 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Are you at least writing down where you find them

I tend to just try and blitz them, but at the moment I'm making do with just coming across them on my travels. And it's slow going.

when you crack and get a guide

Never!

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 5 September 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

i think i'll die or my playstation will become a relic before i find more than 15 oysters.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 5 September 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Ste, you are a crazy, glorious fool :)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 5 September 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

haha i know i'm a tad overly obsessed with these games aren't i.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 5 September 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Ste did you do the others 100% unaided?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 5 September 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

yes, well almost. there was a crafty mission in GTA3 where you had to get in a stallion car outside a multi-storey carpark to activate it. I don't think i would have ever known this was there if I hadn't looked it up.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 5 September 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

if i had a hat, i'd take it off to you.

I haven’t enough patience to get 100% unaided.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 5 September 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I feel awful now! Ste is a true GTA head. I am a failure...

I hate Burn and Lap. Total nightmare!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 5 September 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I tried to collect horseshoes and oysters without a book, too. Then I used a guide to get the rest and couldn't remember which ones I had done and which ones were still out there. It's quite frustrating to be swimming around underneath a bridge somewhere thinking, maybe I already got this one?

I'm playing GTA3 for the first time now. I'll walk through an alley and see a package sitting there and think, "Nuh-uh. Not without a map."

Call me a puss, but those "49 out of 50" stats burn me alive inside.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

gold in all schools was irritating but i didn't think it was THAT hard. i think the only one i gave up on was whe stoppie.

all gold in the air school gets you the hunter, which makes the cop mission vvvveeeeerrry easy

geoff (gcannon), Monday, 5 September 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I prefer stealing the Hunter from one of the flying 'races' and then stashing it at the airfield. I am cheap!

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Monday, 5 September 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

I thought about trying to get 100%, though I'm not so shy about consulting FAQs. Unfortunately, RACES SUCK MONKEY BUTT.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Monday, 5 September 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

oh i thought the races were grebt!! a couple of them were wicked fucking hard, but it's the only time you really have to drive like that in the game

geoff (gcannon), Monday, 5 September 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

but all that traffic dodging practice comes in real handy for the races.

Pleasant - I know what you mean. In Vice there were plenty of moments where 'apparently' I hadn't saved my game after finding a couple of hidden packages (but i suspected a consiracy). I remember picking up the same package 3 times at one point. In the end I had to revisit every single spot again writing them down to get the final 100. Best to do them all in one shot.
Also I thought it was more essential in finding the packages in Liberty and Vice to get the free weapons, to pass the game missions. San Andreas game missions are far too easy.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 5 September 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

YO can someone give me that cheat that lets you fuck the prostitue i need that shit hit me up on email demigod2945@aol.com

dEMi gOD, Monday, 5 September 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

The races aren't all that tough. With the long ones, you can hold back a little bit, because the computer has a tendency to kill themselves. The real short ones are the toughest because they give you the least amount of ground to be able to catch up, and basically force you into running a perfect race. But anything over like 4 miles is a sinch.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Monday, 5 September 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Not Vinewood, man. That's a complete bastard.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 5 September 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

and Freeway, that's a toughy too

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 5 September 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

I just end up nearly headbutting the screen. My main problem is oversteer, I just can't control my skidding! Great idea about the Hunter. Cheers Lee, I was wondering how to get my hands on one, I'm giving up on the schools.

Yesterday tried finding tags for the first time. Jesus wept but there are so many and they are so hard to find even with Brady Guide.

To all those doing it without help, I salute you!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

i was going to try for 100% but then i did a cheat once to make time go faster so i can bone my gf sooner, and that saved and now my game is marred. oh well

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

That's really shit man. Much sympathy. Still, it serves you right you filthy monkey. More old fashioned values and there wouldn't be this problem.

I miss Catalina. She thought I was cool. The nurse one is a nightmare when it comes to Fun. I gave up in the end!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

Forget about sexing them, all you need for 100% completion is to be going out with them! (I think.) But if you want to score, remember: girls like dildos.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

And as for guides: Forget about Brady! Check one gamefaqs.com! Made finding the gang tags 98% easy (there was only one tag that had me asking board nerds help for -- Kevin, let me know if you get to a block in East Los Santos that, on the map, has 4 rectangle buildings and a gang tag that isn't on them -- but is, in fact, in a parking lot BELOW them!)

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I will Lee. I had the misfortune of being dragged away from pc last night but have my hunter safely stored so I'll be checking out the vigilante later as per your advice.

All the later things take so long. God I love and hate this game in equal measure at the moment! Bloody races...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

Finest moment last night? Rampage with tank across the desert. Ah the joy of all those feds running off cliffs or exploding. Pointless excersizes are what make this game so great!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

i'm into fighting in the skys at the moment, also flying along roads blasting cars all over the show.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Fighting in the skies? You mean against the police? I can barely move let alone do fancy manoeuvures. All attempts at Vigilante in the hunter have ended with me nose down being rammed by the pesky law!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

Fighting in the skies, (excuse spelling of skys, tired and hung over) you get in your harrier or whatever the jet’s called then fly low over the no fly zone. You receive 5 wanted stars straight away and 2 jets are scrambled to take you out, plus many helicopters. Dogfight ensues.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

I have got to try that! Though does the harrier just fly like a chopper or is there a way of turning the jets?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

push R3 forward, and pull back to hover. did you not do the plane stealing mission?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

i just cannot control the harrier in hover mode, it just decides to go forward all the time. much better in normal plane mode.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

oh i agree, the hover setting is good for nothing.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Hold on, for PC what does R3 do normally on your controller? No I haven't done that mission yet. Reason being I'm trying to keep the later missions as a reward for all the races. So many races. Has anyone ever succeeded walking or using the jetpack underwater? I was trying last night (he talks about it here: http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/grand_theft_auto_sa_secrets.txt it's 7.A3 other glitches) but to no avail.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Last time I got in the Harrier I had NO idea how to make it go forwards. I pressed/pulled/tweaked all the buttons! Help!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Hold down the numpad 8 key to go into jet mode, and hold down the numpad 2 key to return to helicopter mode

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

The mission where I stole the harrier took the longest of any to complete. I just lowed around back and forth around the bay until I lucked out and shot down the other aircraft.

Y'all, do your vigilantes in the tank! Forget about that harrier. The tank! THE TANK!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

The apache helicopter’s the best for vigilante missions.
The tank’s good, but it sets on fire after a while.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

The mission where I stole the harrier took the longest of any to complete. I just lowed around back and forth around the bay until I lucked out and shot down the other aircraft.

on my first visit to the game i finished this level seriously spawnly, i barely knew that there were other planes after me as they just crashed straight away into other buildings
but when i played again on xbox i chose to take the dogfight high in air above the Gant bridge, probly much to the delight of the San Fierro citizens.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

No no the helicopter!!! the helicopter!!! Won't the tank just get battered until it explodes?

Ah too late (xpost)! Show off Ste, one too many times watchin Battle of Britain that boy...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

if you're doing the vigilante mission in the tank it should repair itself (slightly) after each succesful level done.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

One of the most glaring omissions in my San Andreas career is that, in my since-aborted effort to complete 100%, I never even came close to getting into a tank. ~*tear*~

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I completed my Vigilante mission in about six minutes with that tank. It won't really catch fire unless a helicopter or ANOTHER TANK gets involved. Just keep your wanted level to two stars or under.

Know when you have to catch like seven or eight criminals, and they're all in a convoy? KA-BAM - KA-BAM - KA-BAM - KA-BAM!

Stealing the tank and getting away with it was so much fun.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

Truly a cruel game they play.

It's terrible, my sister is finishing her thesis at my desk the past day or so so I can hardly stop her and kick her off! Or could I... I mean, 100% is so much more important than her Phd, isn't it?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 9 September 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

I never even came close to getting into a tank. ~*tear*~

get a fast car or bike, go to the no fly zone, drive through the fence (there is a weak spot in the fence somewhere, it's easy to notice), go to the hangers, get into one of the tanks, drive to your nearest safe house with LARGE garage, park up & save game.

and stop those tears soldier.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 9 September 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

Weirdly enough both the hunter and the hydra I nicked from races (I came home and was allowed at PCat midnight thusly am wrecked in work today) have disappeared from my hangar. Most odd. The Hydra immediately after saving and all...

Can you store a tank in that hangar? That would make life peachy for the vigilante missions. How does one keep the stars down? Please don't say finding the bribes, I'm terrible at catching Perps how the hell am I meant to get to them!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

yes you can store other vehicles in the hanger.

keeping your stars down just involves you staying low for a bit, i find that being in a chopper though does not lower your stars no matter how long you fly for.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Can you store a tank in that hangar?

i have 2 fbi cars, 2 tanks and harrier. that's the max amount.

How does one keep the stars down?

just save the game and the wanted stars go. if you mean during game play, then find the bribes

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

Nothing is ever easy in this game ;) Can I borrow the tank for the weekend not-g? There's a lady I wanna impress. I'm thinking Michelle the mechanic would dig me in that know what I'm sayin'? How you got and stored all those vehicles, well I am impressed!

Staying low fine, not much use during vigilante with time limit. Good advice though and shall be heeded.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 9 September 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

How you got and stored all those vehicles

I just stole them, dragging an FBI agent out of his car and having the rest them in it is cool. As for the ladies, I just shot them when they came out of the house, waste of time taking them out, they don’t appreciate it and it doesn’t get you anywhere.

As for the tank, it’s a shame I can’t e-mail you one.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 9 September 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

What amazes me about is how you weren't gunned down or similar making your way to the safe house! You are starting to sound like one of those right wing nutcases stockpiling weapons in Utah I think. Shooting a lady? Sir, you are no gentleman...

Not even gmail can help me now I fear. I'll just have to do it the old fashioned way: Grand Larceny.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

It’s either kill the people that annoy me at work or hold my anger until I get home and turn the ps2 on.

Playing a character called Carl when you’re called Carl is weird, especially the " learn to fly Carl" bits.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

I agree. My other use of it is to escape tv, I find the stuff on tv so violent and evil and... um... bugger.

That would freak the best of us out. Thankfully my name (Kevin) is odd enough, it seems that whenever it's used it's always some fat or weird kid. I was the latter but never the former. Until recently that is.

Want to go home now but have to go for drinks. Blasted social life, why must you mock me!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Ha, no social life for me this weekend, just alternating between episodes of 24 and spouts of GTA

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Swine that you are. I've booked Saturday afternoon for just me and my baby. I'll fire her up and we'll party together all night long. Sunday I'll apologise and buy her a new mouse or something to make up for my boorish behaviour.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

This weekend I:

Found all the oysters (even survived getting the two in Easter Basin) in under an hour. How I hear you say? There's a Seasparrow helicopter to the north near that beach you had to drop something off at for Toreno. It's near Verdant Meadows. It's tough as hell and meant ease of access to everywhere. At Easter Basin just stay next to the walls. Going into Sub Pen stick close to left wall and then on way out dive and curve around hugging the wall to under the Aircraft Carrier. The hard part is swimming ashore but there's a police bribe on the tracks behind Xoomer oil. Or you can high speed chase it which is how I managed it.

Took all the photos. I hate the camera and all the running around.

I'm 1 car (the Euros) off completing import/export. I was driving around the camel's toe for what felt like an age with no joy. Any help to offer lads?

Completed pimping. I can now say hit you upside the head to flatmates without fear.

Reached level 23 in vigilante in the tank. Ste, it was as good as can be hoped for. So many dead, so many... I don't think I'll ever see as lovely a sight again as all those FBI ranchers crashing out. Even shot down a couple of helicopters.

Only 89 tags and the races to go. Will this game ever end?!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

I too had a healthy dosage of the game this weekend. I went on a massive water hunt for the oysters in my dingy but I only managed to find 48, and that took me a lot longer than an hour (I'm remembering something like 4 or 5). I believe I have looked in every part of water on this game, which means I'll have to look everywhere again. sigh.
Still can't locate 5 tags, 4 snapshots, and 5 horseshoes.

Can't help you with the Euros, still waiting for a Comet to appear.

and I found an actual cave, it has a police bribe in it!

I like how you can take down choppers with the tank this time, tho it still doesn't beat wasting them with the mini-gun and a healthy amount of ammo.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

For the Comet, drive down the strip and turn right (if I recall correctly) just at Caligula's. Drive down that road and they spawn around there especially near the Royal Casino. Rule of thumb with oysters: have you looked under the bridges and ends of every pier?

Are you still determined not to use a guide? How about a FAQ? It's only kind of like a guide, more a mature and wiser friend...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 12 September 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah bridges and piers were all checked, I don't really mind checking places again. Just not tonight.

haha you cannot lure me over to the dark side kevin, I will never use an FAQ. To be fair me and my house mate both play the game a lot and (before he started cheating) we would sort of watch each other play and therefore in that way I've already been playing with a helpful friend coz I've witnessed him picking up hidden items in places i've never been. But now he's peeked at maps I cannot bring myself to look him in the eye. the filthy rat.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

I won't lure you but I do admire you. I wouldn't go on without one if only because I have to study as well as work so I kind of need to get that repetitive stuff out of the way. I won't look at anything involving missions because then it'd be no fun.

Does my having helped you with the Comet count as a FAQ/Guide? It's a slippery slope Ste, be careful there's nothing worse than a self-hating gamer ;)

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

well the Comets not too rare a car, i can wait until i see one prowling the strip or, more commonly, Vinewood area.

I've forgotten where you said already anyway ;)

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Ste, It is your destiny...

Not to worry, if you do get stuck I will hint and not give answer. That is the best I can offer.

Now more importantly how far are you in the missions? I've managed to get past fish in a barrel (a few more past but I can't remember names and spoilers are t3h suck).

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

oh did the missions long time ago, i thought they were a hella lot easier than vice city and gta3 games. most shooting missions were made easier though with the advanced aiming system i feel.

which one was fish in a barrel ?

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 12 September 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I think it was the one where they agree that they are partners. The aiming system is great! Only prob is that it has me going only for head shots making sure that a couple of shots always hit me!

I only found the missions with in the 4 Dragon's basement last night, I thought the symbol was for the gambling tables. A bit of a relief because repeating return to Los Santos and the Madd Dogg mission in his old house is a fecking killer. Bad enough it takes forever to get through but then you have to chase him down? Fuck that ;)

The last mission I completed for Caligula was the san marco's bistro one.

Forget it. I think I've found another one. I'm not sure though, I mean I'd love to try it it's just I've never used a playstation thing before so I'm just wondering whether it'll do more harm than good. It's the Cordless Rumblepad II Vibration Feedback Gamepad.

one year passes...

Anyone had any experience with that multiplayer mod on PC?

Ste, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 11:56 (seventeen years ago)

ah, i thought this was going to be on the games board. nonetheless

Ste, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 11:58 (seventeen years ago)

Three years after the fact, still nothing makes me laugh more than "Yo, this is MC Shithead"

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 20:59 (seventeen years ago)

anyway, i bought the game on Pc today and will try the multiplayer option this weekend. I'll let you know what it's like, if anyone cares.

Ste, Friday, 2 November 2007 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

early tests show that the multitheft client is nothing but a load of modded maps with gta graphics. I couldn't even leave my car.

but i could be wrong and i'll play more tonight.

i reckon this isn't quite what people think it is though.

Ste, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

San Andreas was pretty unplayable on the PC as it was.

S-, Friday, 2 November 2007 14:13 (seventeen years ago)

i can't believe the control pad defaults, what were they thinking ?!

SA:MP sounds better than Multitheft

Ste, Friday, 2 November 2007 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

Actually Multitheft was more fun, even though it lacked any free-roam on foot action because it was all car based. The deathmatches are a great blast!

SA:MP was more free roam but to be honest the RPG style was a bit crap and I didn't get it at all. Might be fun with yer mates though.

Ste, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

having completed GTAIV and its DLC last year - the first modern-era games i ever completed, iirc - and having owned GTA:SA as dlc since it came out on xbox 360 originals, am finally getting back into this. when i had it originally, for ps2, i didn't get too far - certainly never made it to las venturas, anyway. i aim to finish it this time around.

weirdly, it doesn't seem to have aged too madly, though i do wish for some of GTAIV's polish at times. and yes, the wardrobe sequences are bone-achingly slow.

it's the big narrative swerves that impress me most - like when sweet gets arrested and you get exiled to the boondocks for a while. as much as i prefer the gtaiv engine, none of its stories really took such left-turns - there's an eccentricity, a weirdness, to san andreas that's compelling and funny, and which eluded GTAIV and its dlc (though gay tony was fantastic). i'd like to see some of that weird pulpy flavour back in GTAV.
