Could you all stop using the word "RIP" when people die?

isn't there something awfully summary about commenting on someone's death with a monosyllabic utterance that usually means something else? perhaps you could at least deign to use the humble period?

i always hear 'RIP' in a Junglist accent/tone

not really Michael, it's just like anything else where you have people talking but not saying anything. perhaps some things should remain as thoughts rather than statements though? why people choose to express thoughts verbally or in print that don't stretch beyond an obvious declaration of 'sadness' upon an individual's passing is a little curious though (to me at least). carry on.

exactly. same with birthday threads, though those are far less serious so it bothers me less.

The fact that you refer to it as a word is evidence that you're misreading it.

i'm not misreading it. you are. i want more respect for both language and the dead. i suppose i am taking ILX way too seriously, even in its treatment of serious subjects, but in my opinion this place is more for criticism than comity. other people on this thread have different values. even from my perspective, however, i suppose my objection is a bit too particular - just about any short post to a thread upon someone's death is summary, in fact.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I think that "RIP" is an automatic reaction-statement that people make in shocked response to the death of a famous person, kind of like something to quickly say, this is sad, I was a fan, rest in peace. As the RIP threads develop, people tend to collect their thoughts and post more cohesive rememberances of the person (this is happening on the Jerry Orbach thread as we speak). I guess the initial RIP phase is unnecessary, but it helps keep the thread near the top of the page and so helps people get the news, and it provides some consolation to the poster that they have expressed some sadness, however minute, until they can post something more apt.

Yes, automatic reaction statements like RIP and OTM are perfunctory utterances, and the overuse of these common expressions has rendered them devoid of meaning.

So, the next time I meet with friends, I won't bother shaking hands.

I regret that I agree with gabbneb. I don't like the way it looks, but I don't like the whole "rest in peace" thing. The whole idea of referring to death as resting gets under my skin for some reason. Maybe it is. Maybe when I die it will just be like a long endless summer nap. I just don't see why there's so much more reason to think that it is resting rather than oblivion (or for that matter, a continued existence of some more active sort than merely resting).

I have a inherited a lot of strong feelings about death discourse maybe because of being a Methodist's minister's son, and hearing my father complained about people saying "passed away" or "expired" instead of just saying that someone died.

contribute, Wednesday, 29 December 2004 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Why does something automatically lose significance just because it's commonplace? Sure, it often does, but often doesn't mean always. Often, people say RIP reflexively and without there being any real human sentiment behind it. Doesn't mean every time it's said/wrote, that's the case. Often, people will shake hands without really having it be a friendly, welcoming greeting. The problem lies with those who are flippant with such things, and not the things themselves.

So gabbneb, you're saying that you don't like RIP because you want ILX to be a "good read", whereas those who are saying it are more interested in ILX being a "good write"?

Nothing says "Requiescant In Pace" like furries slinking out of space labia.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 December 2004 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Your search - space labia - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:
- Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
- Try different keywords.
- Try more general keywords.
- Try fewer keywords.

does anybody have a copy of that issue? i really wanna know what Husker Du said to the esteemed journalist from the magazine wot shreds

kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 30 December 2004 03:24 (twenty years ago)

The weird part is that issue looks like it came out around the time of Warehouse: Songs & Stories. Not the most rippingish album in the Dü Hüskers canon.

Lord knows what Ron Wood was popping off about in there either.

how about the use of ROFFLE when somebody dies? just to lighten up the sad occasion. i wish people did that, just not be so grumpy all the time and look on the bright side, you know.

"What's up, chinese guy?"
"our great leader has just died :("
"aw, fuck! well, ROFFLE mao."

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 30 December 2004 11:37 (twenty years ago)

what are people supposed to say? it's just shorthand for whatever obvious thing you would have said otherwise.

Could we all stop saying 'happy birthday' etc.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

While we're at it, stop saying "how are you doing?" and instead say "as if i care how you are, let me tell you how i'm feeling today."
