I'm signed up, "giganticmag," though I'm not exactly sure what it does or why.

now that i have a digicam i should get up on this shit.

You're all so talented.

Lil' Trick Thug (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 December 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i think im going to use mine as a place to deposit all my cameraphone shots. fyi: the stuff before december is all 35mm, which is why it looks nicer.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 30 December 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorites: T = “FDSC02029,” M = “I am a superficial person,” C = “sandylands.”

I didn’t know this was an “in/out” kind of thing, but I did use it to host a terrible what-you-look-like picture.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, that photo wasnt taken by me. its a polaroid from my friend lauren. i should note that on the page.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the fact that you're in the picture keeps you from needing to explain that.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

sandylands is a remnant from the time when my home town & its neighbour were the main summer holiday destinations of the glaswegian working and lower-middle class. today it's a bit 'in a resort like sandylands, no one is innocent...'

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going to try to take a picture of every building in my neighborhood in like ten blocks in any direction. Right now I think my neighborhood might be on the cusp of a lot of change.

I think the fact that you're in the picture keeps you from needing to explain that.

-- nabisco (--...), December 30th, 2004. (nabisco) (link)

not necessarily true. i tend to shoot a lot of my own portraits.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 30 December 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

But you'd have to have a super-invisible arm-and-shoulder deal to have managed that one! (Or a timer, okay.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 December 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

NB I thought my favorites of J's would be the asses, but then dreamy old Archer Prewitt made an appearance.

I really like those 'pinhole' photos (esp. the quality of light.) could you explain how you did it a little, fr the unitiated and stupid.

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 31 December 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

looks like 110film , but i doubt it

kephm, Friday, 31 December 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

TG's "Cheeseburger Cheeseburger" is fun.

The pinhole pics were made from a homemade pinhole camera. I used a Holga ($20 plastic medium format camera), took the whole lens assembly off, then taped a piece of soda can over the hole, and painted the inside with flat black spray paint. A piece of electrical tape works as the shutter.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Friday, 31 December 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

dude no idea what any of that means.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 31 December 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

TG's "Cheeseburger Cheeseburger" is fun.

thanks david! it was using my 35mm, set at ƒ11. i didnt have a sync cord for my flash, so i just opened up the shutter manually, then used my other hand to trigger the flash and closed the shutter as soon as it was done.

the technique's a bit unwieldly but i managed to get shots that were fairly sharp. im fairly critical of my work but i think these photographs look really fun.

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 January 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

ok now that I've done flickr, I'm tempted to try this instead: http://photostack.org/

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Teeny, that's awesome! I was trying to figure out a simpler way to put together my photoblog without creating a secondary Movable Type blog, which is a pain to maintain. You are an internet goddess and you have cool hair and I like you a lot.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, it looks like this with the default templates and everything:

http://giganticmag.com/photos/

Looks very modifiable, too.

http://giganticmag.com/photos/manual.html

Everything is template tags (inspired by Movable Type), the values of which are defined in config files, peppered with some very nice css. You could play with it all day long. I think I may.

Other good things: It searches your image folders dynamically, which means all you have to do is upload the image into the appripriate directory (or "album") for it to start appearing on your site. Most time-saving photoblog ever.

This flickr hack, Colr Pickr (this no-e thing really is a stroke of geniuos) is lovely. Uses a colour spectrum to group pictures. TIP: you have to double, rather than single click, on colours to get the matching pictures, at least you do on Firefox.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 31 July 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

30th July, 2005

Now you can block obnoxious, unfriendly, annoying, suspicious, smelly, confusing, politically questionable, disconcerting, pernicious, creepy, putrid, dismaying ex-boyfriends, people who want to be your boyfriend who you don't want as a boyfriend, hamsters, people who dislike Mogwai, that girl who laughed at your hair extensions, insurance salesmen, your ex-husband's second wife, your ex-wife's second husband, turtles, astronauts, nose-pickers, people with ugly anime characters as their buddy icon or just about any people you would like to block. Sometimes life is complicated.

When you choose to block someone, it means they:

* can't comment on your photos (all comments on your photos made by them are deleted)
* are removed as your contact, and you are removed as theirs (they can't add you as a contact again)
* can't add your photos as favorites anymore (any of your photos marked as their favorites are removed)
* can't blog your photos
* can't add notes or tags
* can't send you FlickrMail

You can access this feature from the delete page for a comment they have made, and from their profile and photostream pages.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 31 October 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

the 'flickritis/invite everyone' pool seems really pointless - i didn't join.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 3 November 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

I thought they converted all the photos you upload to a smaller size/lower resolution? Are you ordering prints of the originals or what they have stored on their server?

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

You can click the "All Sizes" button if it's your pic, they store the originals. Less so with the free accounts, I believe.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 3 November 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

It's not just your own pics you can get the original res versions of. It depends on how the (pro) user has set their options. I think maybe by default it's set to only allow other people access to the lower res versions, but you can easily change it. All mine are up for original res download, for example.

I think they're a bunch of weirdos.

I don't really.

Question: If I upgrade to PRO status, do I get all my old photos back? I have only just realised that you only get spece for 200 at a time if you are not PRO.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 19 May 2006 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

I think you get your old photos back if you go Pro, PJM. Go Pro!

Views = just hits on that photo's page, I think. I don't think it distinguishes individuals. I used to think that "your photostream has been viewed x times" was a grand total of these views until I realised that it would mean my pix were averaging about 7 views each; it actually means all the hits on your "home page". I don't know whether it continues to increment if people step through your pix having not been put off by page 1.

Maaaaan. Y'all are all like, photographers and shit. I just have a bunch of photos of my friends. Most popular/interesting seems to be all about milking the tags. Fans of THE PUSSYCAT DOLLS have flocked in droves (179 people = 3.34 droves) to view:

I have a flickr question. I uploaded a bunch of photos in one go, and they've come out chronologically back to front. I've looked everywhere on the site, but I can't seem to find any reference to re-ordering and reconfiguring photos. Am I just being really thick? If so, could some benevolent soul point me in the right direction? meanwhile, if you fancy having a look at my pics, which I took at the World Cup a couple of weeks ago, www.flickr.com/photos/danielgiraffe - please note this is still very much a work in progress.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Monday, 3 July 2006 09:50 (nineteen years ago)

The order in the photostream view is fixed by order of time of upload. But within the Organizr thing you can move about the order of photos within the set view (if you have put them in a set).

Alba (Alba), Monday, 3 July 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

(both manually and by setting them to be ordered in chronological order of date taken or uploaded)

Alba (Alba), Monday, 3 July 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks very much, Alba. I'll have another look for the manual thing in Organizr.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Monday, 3 July 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
I opened a flickr account a couple of days ago, and I'm slowly uploading some of my photos, but when I log out and search for them (using words either in the name, or the tags, or the description) it never finds any of them. None of them have been viewed, and they're never found by any search. Am I missing something really obvious?

Teh littlest HoBBo (the pirate king), Thursday, 27 July 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

Are they definitely public and not private?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 July 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. It seems you can find them if you search for my username, but it's very unlikely anyone wanting to see a picture of Primrose Hill (for example) would do a search for 'captainzep'.

Teh littlest HoBBo (the pirate king), Thursday, 27 July 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

I just found one by searching for highams park butterfly.

Maybe you were just searching on too-common terms, like peak district?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 July 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Oops – I tell a lie. I was accidently searching on your own photo set rather than everyone's. Weird. I should email them about it. I'm stumped.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 27 July 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

You're right. Just found in the middle of about a million FAQs:
Why aren't my photos showing up?

When you sign up for Flickr, your new account is marked as 'pending', until Flickr administrators have reviewed it to make sure you aren't posting offensive images, or junk downloaded from the web.

one month passes...
Just found this in my flickr inbox (obviously the XXXXs are changes I've made):

Dear Sir

I am writing on behalf of Polish travel agency - XXXXX. We are an incoming travel agency to Poland and operate a very popular travel portal at: XXXXX.com

We are now expanding outside Poland and would like to offer similar services in over 30 cities in Europe. Currently we are working on our website www.XXXX.com to make it more attractive for our customers and people interested in our services. We are now working on new design and look of the website. The effects of our work you can see at www.XXXXX.com

We found your photos at www.flickr.com and like them very much. In fact, we would like to use them in the new version of our website. The Policy at www.flickr.com requires us to ask the author whether we can publish the picture and that is why we are writing.

Should you allow us to publish your pictures of Mellieha Bay at www.XXXXXX.com, we will be happy to put your name along with all your contact details in a special section of the website, which will be easily accessible from the page with your pictures.

Kindly, please, let us know if you agree on using your pictures on our website.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.

I'm not really sure what to do. I don't mind them using a couple of pictures of Malta, but if I give them permission does that mean they can just help themselves to all of my photos forever? Do people normally charge money for this (and should I?)? Is this some kind of bizarre Polish scam to steal my identity?

Teh littlest HoBBo (the pirate king), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

My username is nicolars, but about the only picture I have is a picture of my dog, which I uploaded so I could show you all how adorable he is.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

There is no dog.

Teh littlest HoBBo (the pirate king), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

People normally charge, yes, and with licences that restrict what they can use them for, and which images they can use. But lots of photographers just want to get used, and offer their stuff for free, which is a pain. This surprises people, who think that photography wants to be free.

stet (stet), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

I know absolutely nothing about licenses and I'm probably too lazy to do any research (apart form posting here). Maybe I should e-mail them and say 'just a few pictures for free and you have to tell me which ones first'. Does that have any legal force? Or should I demand a million pounds and get myself a hot-shot lawyer?

Teh littlest HoBBo (the pirate king), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and I was wrong. There is a dog.

Teh littlest HoBBo (the pirate king), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

It's a commercial entity trawling for free images. Charge them money or tell them no, and keep an eye on the site to make sure they don't use them anyway (if they do, you can sue - easier if they have a physical entity in your home nation).

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

I love Flickr nowadays. I'm sure anyone interested in me would be able to find me.

-- (688), Thursday, 28 September 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

No, it is AN FOREIGNER for a Polish travel agents. I'm torn between:
- saying 'take whatever you want but ask me first'
- asking for £20 per photo (but is this against flickr rules?)
- ignoring the message

Teh littlest HoBBo (the pirate king), Thursday, 28 September 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

i got pretty much the same e-mail a while back. i don't think my photos are worth much as it is so don't care if someone uses them on their own site or whatever (obv. crediting me would be nice). but if you can get some money out of them without hassle i may well reconsider my position. the flickr objection hadn't occurred to me, but our photos exist outside of flickr too of course so that needn't be an obstacle.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

the guy showed me which couple of photos from La Coruna I'd taken that he wanted to use and I said fine (esp. as he said he would credit my name - tho i've never checked to see if i did).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

the other thing to be consider is whether the subjects (people, buildings, even in public domain) of your photograph itself are the copyright property of someone else and implications of that.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

I was going to ask on the Flickr help message board, but then I thought that might cause more trouble than it's worth. I'm weighing up the pros and cons of an easy life v fame and fortune in Poland.

Teh littlest HoBBo (the pirate king), Thursday, 28 September 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

Flickr has no rules against you selling your images -- you keep all your rights. You can't work out a price until you know how busy the website they want to use them on is.

Also, unless you're taking pictures of films/TV shows, you're fine copyright-wise. (In the US, however, there are rights of publicity, which means you'd need model releases for anyone in the image -- but public areas are grey ones.)

Buildings can't be copyrighted, if the image is taken from a public place, though some have security restrictions -- again mostly in the US and other fundamentalist/security-conscious nations.

stet (stet), Friday, 29 September 2006 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

You want to set a price by number of page impressions, £20 to start and £5 per 100,000 or some such

Just changed permissions on 277 photos - sorry if you're a contact and not a "friend", you can no longer see them.

This is actually the second bit of Flickr oddness in a week - uploaded four pix and they were immediately favourited by someone; turned out to be some Japanese religious organisation (they "commented" on one too - an enormous screed on their cult). Blocked them, deleted the comment.

Flickr has obviously reached that point now where the nuts have realised its potential.

I was mildly concerned that some loonytune would look up photos of the children but then I figured if you don't tag them or call them anything then they can't really be found through searching anyway or am I am missing something?

Edward Trifle (Ned Trifle IV), Monday, 15 January 2007 09:50 (nineteen years ago)

Ned, that meal you just put up looks awesome - a meal with an intermission. If I'm ever in Orange I'm gonna have to get some of that.

No, I think you're OK if you don't tag them - there's no way they can search a bunch of compressed pixels ;)

In the Natural Light Child Photography group, there's an ongoing discussion about dubious Flickr accounts - people who "fave" photos of your children, who don't have any public photos uploaded themselves and whose favourites are entirely random pics of kids. ::shudder:: Only two of my 300+ pics of Ava & Tallulah are now public.

Used a website last week that does a clever bit of searching to see if anyone is blogging your pix; someone had pinched a screengrab I'd uploaded from His Girl Friday (which is fair enough, I was already violating copyright) to illustrate an article about journalism as a career and an Italian blogger had used a macro photo of my CD player as some tangential reference to his/her theme. No permission sought, of course, but no harm done so far...

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 15 January 2007 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

There's always the chance somebody could spot your picture on the random front page bit. I found a hilariously unrealistic transvestite that way and made her a contact for a larf (cruel, I know). I hastily uncontacted her when she started posting pictures with enormous erect cock protruding from miniskirt. None of her pictures were titled or tagged.

This is a "fantasy tattooing" car parked in Nunhead which NEVER MOVES. I assume the tattooing takes place inside? NB don't click on the large size picture because it reveals quite how shaky the picture is, ie, how drunk I was at 4am when I snapped it hem hem.

I'm on self-imposed Flickr exile until I get a new camera.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 15 January 2007 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

Ha - I got a new camera for wobs and obviously I'm too intimidated to use it....

I did take it on Saturday's tubewalk though, and took a grand sum of three pictures. One of a van bearing the logo writ in dirt, "Russell Brand On Board". It's Art, you know.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 15 January 2007 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't we do this on "Should Stalking Be An Acceptable Part Of Courtship"? I think we agreed, like... don't do it (unless they are kerazeee dressed up and begging for attention outside Kashpoint etc etc). Then again I may be old fashioned and CREEPED OUT in this respect.

I've thought for a while that Google or someone should be able to offer something that analysed photos enough to at least allow you to click on a "more like this" button and find other photos that resemble the original one. Would be fun to use as well as useful when you're looking for the best quality reproduction of an artwork or album cover.

Edward Trifle (Ned Trifle IV), Monday, 15 January 2007 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

It's some kind of "special sauce" mixture of views, comments and number of people who've marked it as a favourite.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 15 January 2007 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

That's probably because that one is also the most 'favourited' one then. I have no idea why though. This is much better I think.

FWIW, this is what I would consider to be an interesting pic of mine (there's bound to be at least one group for photos of photos, or even specifically photos of slides, so I should probably get it out there, as it were...):

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/111/305993365_f4ccc54526.jpg

I'm rapidly approaching the 1000-photo mark on my photostream. Presuming it's not just another picture of the kids wearing amusing hats, what should it be?

Starry - you need Gocco in yr life! www.gocco.com (though it's not been updated since 1997).

any other old skool members disappointed by the forced migration to yahoomail IDs?

seems like such a backward move tech-wise.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

I was pissed off, mostly because it's impossible to stay logged in to Yahoo for more than five minutes. But that doesn't affect Flickr, apparently.

Finding a short ID was fucking impossible though.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 02:07 (nineteen years ago)

any other old skool members disappointed by the forced migration to yahoomail IDs?
YES!!!

Yahoo also is bitches because they have their own non-interoperable distributed identity standard. I am pissed about having to sign up for yahoo though. Seems like I'll have another useless email address.

Probably a stealth move towards getting people using Y! messenger and to steal gmail users back, now that Y! mail don't suck

UART variations (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 02:14 (nineteen years ago)

It's seriously time for a better way of authenticating to websites than all this bullshit. OpenID is nonsense as well.

One login, to the browser, with private/public keys or something, will do me. Even better if I can put the private key on a USB stick and carry it about.

Fucking cookies.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

What's wrong with openid

UART variations (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

Partly because people aren't urls, except by some stupid metaphor overloading; mostly because I want something better than yet more uname/password stuff. Nobody's going to dominate with that, because too many big sorts have too much vested in keeping you as "theirs".

stet (stet), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 02:37 (nineteen years ago)

I always thought it was funny that I was deemed "old skool" for having a superior, more advanced email.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 02:46 (nineteen years ago)

1) "People aren't URLs" is a stupid criticism. People aren't email addresses, public keys, usernames, RSA SecureIDs, keys, hats, nametags or passports either.
2) I want something better than yet more uname/password stuff. OpenID can be implemented using any authentication method between the user and their OpenID provider. Like some kind of public key thing.
3) Nobody's going to dominate with that, because too many big sorts have too much vested in keeping you as "theirs". What the fuck are you going on about? Are you complaining for or against?

UART variations (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 02:48 (nineteen years ago)

1. Yeh, I was being too flip. But at least email effectively can "be" someone -- you send a message to it, it gets to them (er, ish). I think of jon@wih as "you" much more than I would www.wih.com -- I'm too used to URLs being a collection of things.

2. Right, but it can also be just uname/pass. One that *didn't* allow that would force sites that want in to support the groovy Nu Way and not just cop out by making me log in. Again.

3. I'm complaining against another "Sign In to This Site with your Username and Password", because Yahoo/MSN/etc etc all want you to use their own ID, and trying to introduce just one more leaves us in the same place as IM.

Course, I *am* talking mostly bollocks, because even a completely different system wouldn't truly take off, because of #3.

If open ID took off so much that even 50% of the sites I have passes for used it, it'd be a huge leap.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

re 1) Using URLS is more practical since everyone deploying this has a web server but people are going to be adverse to deploying something like kerberos or whatever. There's ample precedent for this with Web Service APIs, etc.

2) I'm not sure what you're saying here.... You can use any OpenID supported site with any crazy shit your OpenId provider wants to do.

3) Well duh! There's some progress being made towards this with IM (Google and AOL). I bitched about some annoying parts of OpenID on my blog: http://wizardishungry.com/blog/archive/six_aparts_support_for_openid_is_a_one-way_street_trife_bitches_still_love_money

UART variations (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

2. (been reading up). Hoo shit, that is cool. I'd misunderstood that about OpenID

3. "I’m not going to be convince my less technical friends to setup their personal blogs/homepages/whatever for OpenID if it won’t work as expected." Is spot-on.

Also, goddamn Anil gets about a bit!

As for password control, I don't know about OpenID, but someone was recommending GenPass. Haven't tried it myself.

man, flickr just gets better and better (except for the yahoo account merge thing, which i can live with).

-you can now nest your "sets" into "collections" (good if you have a lot of sets with shared themes)
-if someone leaves a comment saying "you should add this shot to such-and-such group," there's an "add this photo" button underneath the comment
-you don't even have to join some group you don't want to join just to post your one or two pictures there

get bent, Saturday, 17 March 2007 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

i am thinking of going pro.

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 March 2007 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

i've been pro for two years! well worth it.

get bent, Saturday, 17 March 2007 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

the only drawback to flickr is i wish there was more of a sense of community -- it's cool to have contacts and be able to post and receive comments, but the group messageboards are very underused. i think if they were to tease out the "social networking tool" side of flickr i'd really like that... i'd rather meet weirdo photographers than random myspace douches.

get bent, Saturday, 17 March 2007 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

JBR's right there re: social networking being underutilized on flickr (and right on going pro -- VERY well worth it). I do like the 'collections' feature, it's a nice touch; allowed me to combine various trip sets, plus big concert overviews (Terrastock, ArthurFest, etc.)

how do you all upload your pics? specifically mac users. i am thinking of paying for the aperture/iphoto uploader plugins.

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 March 2007 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Paying? Heavens no, man, use Flickr Uploader. Costs nothing.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 March 2007 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Download Mac version here

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 March 2007 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

do they still insist that you do the "official" link thing when you post pictures elsewhere if you're pro?

also does the uploader integrate with iphoto/aperture?

i guess i'll find out in a moment!

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 March 2007 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

I use the uploader separately from iPhoto or anything else -- just drag/drop the files into it. I love it because it makes batch tag editing/title/comments/set creation simple on my end rather than the site's end. Then I just get everything to upload and forget about it.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 March 2007 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

As for 'official' linking I've never heard about it. I set my photos to CC use and they turn up in various spots, with people asking me for use beforehand. Amusingly a number of my shots have ended up on official sites for hotels and restaurants and the like -- even some libertarian property think tank once.

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 March 2007 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

I do, sure. Why not? The medium size snapshot is good for most viewing but someone wants to go nuts, it's there.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 March 2007 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

yeah it seems like it would be a good idea for backup purposes as well—though it'll take a while to upload bunches of 3-4mb files.

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 March 2007 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

i think there's a cutoff to how big/hi-res your photos can be, but for most amateur users it's a non-issue.

get bent, Saturday, 17 March 2007 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I always* upload full size - as slocki says, it's like having an online backup.

(Not quite true - when Pam and the neighbourhood mums have social gatherings and Pam fires off 30-40 pix of the kids, I usually run them through Photoshop Elements in batch mode [25% resize, autolevels] and then just upload the lot to a new, private set; Pam captions and prunes online and sends out guest passes to that set).

Michael Jones, Saturday, 17 March 2007 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

hey pro people, do you upload full-res versions of all your pics?

Never. I use Flickr to try and generate traffic to my website and blog (kinda working so far...) and as an easy way to host images for the blog w/o having to screw around with h0stway or whomever it is that hosts my site. I also don't like the idea of there being a full or high-res "negative" floating around the internets.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Sunday, 18 March 2007 04:27 (nineteen years ago)

I used to upload hires versions of my work before i realised people could access them, and when I noticed people favoriting 200+ of my images at a time I wised up.

Kate, non masonic, Sunday, 18 March 2007 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

Yup, I do full-size upload too. I'm not particularly proprietary about my images, in the end (I just had Carnegie Hall use one of mine in their latest Berlin campaign). I just ask for samples of the work they're used in. Images here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/guymauve.

I also use a nice wordpress plug-in that allows me to use flickr images in my posts. Very handy.

guymauve, Sunday, 18 March 2007 04:44 (nineteen years ago)

omg i made the "explore" page with that reading room pic! i think that's definitely a sign i should go pro!

is there not a way to upload full-size while only making smaller versions available to the hoi polloi?

s1ocki, Sunday, 18 March 2007 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

Unfortunately there is always a work around for people who want to nab your hires pics, so I just don't put them up.

Kate, non masonic, Sunday, 18 March 2007 05:39 (nineteen years ago)

ya, i never upload my hirez. i think i have a decent enough size for viewing but if someone wants to use the pic, or print, it they can ask me first and i can always send along a larger version.

it yes, i've only had it a month and already i want a new lens.

not--goodwin, Sunday, 18 March 2007 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

If you fancy a nice, solid prime to complement your kit lens, the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II is kind of an essential for the 300/350/400D family of D-SLRs; it's very cheap (and feels and sounds it - the AF whirs idiotically and is very "seeky" in low-light) - about 60 quid in the UK ($60 in the US, damn them) - but the jump in image quality and the gains in speed over the 18-55mm are huge, I think.

(You can pay 3-4 times as much for the 1.4, which some reckon is worth it, or 15 times as much for the 1.2L, which surely isn't; there's a separate argument that using a 50mm prime on a 1.6x-cropping D-SLR - which I think they all are, aside from the high-end full-frame Canons - is a bit restrictive, as it's like using an 80mm fixed focal length lens on a 35mm film SLR. The shorter focal length primes are very expensive though).

Beyond that, i.e. 28-40, 70-300, etc, I dunno - all out of my price league.

michael i have one those "thrifty 50s" myself. it's pretty useful, plus it's small & light and easy to carry around.

It's great, isn't it? My wife finds the kit lens more useful in social situations (I'm sure she'd stick to the little Ixus if she hadn't (re-)caught the SLR bug) but even she's been won over to the 50mm. For low-light and portrait work, it's ace.

Good post on photo.net about the Canon range of lenses - it's a bit out of date (written with the then-new 300D in mind) but is really comprehensive:

Mike, after seeing your photos above, I am seriously thinking about getting a decent camera again. I suspect, though, that I would still lack one other thing you obviously have in spades, namely talent; kitting myself out with anything other than a point-and-shoot would smack far too much of trying to polish a turd.

peteR, Monday, 19 March 2007 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really not much of a photographer! Honestly, I take hundreds of photos of my kids so if half a dozen have some special quality or appear technically well-executed or have some other artsy flourish, it's basically luck.

My wife has a better eye for the moment and composition than me, but I think I have a slightly better handle on quality of light and the technicalities of getting that onto the CCD. Between us, we take some nice pix of the girls. And house numbers. And play-doh animals.

Will DSLRs ever be affordable?

g-kit, Monday, 19 March 2007 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

Check out the Nikon D40x

Ed, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

Has anyone taken advantage of the Collections feature? I'm not terribly keen - I struggle to put things in Sets most of the time - but I had a go anyway (SE19 kids (all the neighbourhood birthday parties - all private, accessed by guest passes to the local mums), London and Holidays). Had trouble getting my selections for the mosaic to take though.

Michael Jones, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

My 300D was about 260 quid (with kit lens) secondhand on eBay. In very good nick and the previous owner had even done the firmware hack which turns it into a cheap 10D (mirror lock, ISO 3200, more parameter options, JPGs embedded in RAW, etc).

Judging by the photo counter, we've used it as much in 3 months as the previous owner did in 2 years...

But, yeah, Nikon D40 is the cheapest new D-SLR I think.

Michael Jones, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

I really need to get an f1.8 50mm lens (or similar). Those shots are great.

Ed, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

Friend of my husband just paid 1700 euros (instead of the retail price of 2200 euro) for a DSLR!!!! He's only started taking photography seriously end of last year, enrolling in a course. WTF!

nathalie, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

What I mean is, are prices coming down? Or have they been? Nikon D40 is way too expensive for me.

g-kit, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

The Nikkor 50mm 1.8 is a bit more expensive (80-90 quid?) than its Canon equivalent but may well be better built, have quieter AF - I don't know.

It's really difficult to stop using my 50mm wide-open - it's like driving everywhere at top speed! Even though I know it isn't at its sharpest until f/3 or so and f/1.8 is really not appropriate for group shots or very bright conditions. I've messed up several potentially great shots through my obsessive use of 1.8.

Michael Jones, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yes prices have been falling and lower end products have been introduced.

Ed, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Ed, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

Prices are still coming down, but the steepest fall was probably 2004-05. My 300D was the world's first sub-$1000 (sub-£1000 here) D-SLR in 2003! Now entry-level D-SLRs are less than half that new and are significantly better specced.

The 1D still retails for well over two grand. 5Ds seem to be the very popular with press photographers round here.

Some great point-and-shoots out there, but it's hard to go back to the Ixus i.

Michael Jones, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

i like the phrase "kit lens" a lot.

g-kit, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

Ed, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

Kit lens - they give you the glass and some glue and off you go. Numbers on the focus ring are Letraset.

Michael Jones, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

peteR, Monday, 19 March 2007 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

Do you guys think I could pick up a DSLR on ebay for < £300 without too much pissing around? Or would that be a rare bargain for which I'd need sackfuls of luck & some degree of ebay skillz?

g-kit, Monday, 19 March 2007 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

FUCK. I just did something a bit silly.

g-kit, Monday, 19 March 2007 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

Ed, Monday, 19 March 2007 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

My 300D was an Xmas present. I've only recently discovered how much it was and how many auctions Pam watched/bid on before she got lucky; it tooks a few weeks of fairly intensive eBaying to land the camera. She didn't get the absolute best deal that was out there but did pretty well.

(You didn't just bid more than you can afford, did you? Or Buy It Now?)

g-kit, Monday, 19 March 2007 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

It's a tremendous bargain, g-kit. The 350D was something like 750 quid when it first came to market and even now I think Jessops sell what stock they still have of this model at 370+.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 19 March 2007 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

jimmy what's wrong with the 18-200mm Nikkor VR?

i've seen some incredible barrel distortion but nothing that's not easily fixable.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 19 March 2007 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

my problem w/ the last statement is that is that you shouldn't have to "fix" anything that the lens does; if you do then the lens if faulty by design. That doesn't take into account vingetting or distortion @ the wide; that's just the nature of the glass in a zoom; the big 1,000$+ lenses distort @ the wide end too, it's a matter of what you can live with and what you cant. I've futzed around w/ distortion correcting in PS2 and find the results a little wierd in the 'I know what I shot and this isn't it' kind of way. Just not for me.

Re: the nikon 18-200, my answer is mostly personal and has to do with the fact that I don't want a lens that ramps up to a 5.6 at the long end and lives somewhere around a 3.5 at the short end, and I certainly don't want to compensate for having a slow lens with a SLOWER shutter... anything I shoot I want to be able to live @ a 2.8 @ 1/60 or better; I don't like my shooting style dictated by the lens i.e. the master controls the tool, not the other way around. the idea of saying 'yeah our lens is slow... but look! you can shoot hand held @ 1/10 and not have any camera shake! nevermind that your subject is sliding all over the frame and is blurry!' is absurd.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 19 March 2007 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

I have a Canon f 2.8 70-200mm which is apparently a pretty nice lens but I barely use it as I had no idea what lenses to get when I was in the market for them and was sold this one because I had to do a live gig (something i never usually do and hate doing). So I have this nice lens somewhat pricey (for me at least) that is completely pointless in my every day shooting. I think I should sell it.

Kate, non masonic, Monday, 19 March 2007 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

The only 70-200 f/2.8 lenses in the current Canon range appear to have L designation (Canon's way of saying they're pro grade) - they retail for 900-1300 quid!

I guess this is marginally less high-end? What's the rest of the bumph on the lens body, Kate - IS? USM? Not that I'm in the market (unless you're selling for £100 - which you're not after reading my first paragraph).

Michael Jones, Monday, 19 March 2007 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah - and is it an EOS (EF mount) lens? If it's an FD it would fit Pam's 1970s FtB (for example) but not anyone's D-SLR.

Michael Jones, Monday, 19 March 2007 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

Jimmy,

Thanks for the reply. I rented that lens and took some pics that came out a little wonky.

Take a look at the arc distortion on this one:

Steve Shasta, Monday, 19 March 2007 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

it's too bad they can't or won't grind the lenses to correct for spherical abberation like they do with loupes. Maybe just too costly?

Wiggy Woo, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 01:37 (nineteen years ago)

It's an EF mount. And yes, it's L series :)

Kate, non masonic, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

Kate what's your asking price? Email me I may be interested in it.

Wiggy Woo, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 06:39 (nineteen years ago)

Well it's barely seen any work and I'm not 100% sure I want to sell it, but I'll let you know when I've made up my mind :)

Kate, non masonic, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 08:05 (nineteen years ago)

Gosh, L-series. Out of my league. I assumed it wasn't because of your understated "apparently a pretty nice lens"!

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 08:38 (nineteen years ago)

i still feel guilty x 1,000,000

g-kit, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

g-kit, there's two ways of looking at this. The better one is that you just saved a small fortune over buying one in the shops. Also, guilt can be mitigated a lot by getting out there and making your purchase worthwhile; if Steady Mike's stuff is anything to go by you can get some really good results here, so I suspect that once you start taking pictures with it you'll probably regret the purchase a lot less.

I'm quite jealous, if that helps.

peteR, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

The thing is Michael, I don't really know anything about the technical side of photography, I just wing it, so the "apparently" came from a very sincere place rather than me trying to appear modest :)

Kate, non masonic, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

Understood. You wing it rather well!

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

despite it being something i really want, i think i'm going to sell on this 350d; trying to justify buying it to myself is making me feel really lousy.
i feel particularly awful because i was given an absolutely awesome Powershot S3 for my birthday, which is fucking great for a point & shoot, but by ordering this dslr I feel SO fucking ungrateful, even though I'm buying it for completely different usage, and it's in no way a replacement for the S3. i just feel like an utter wanker for doing this, and the fact that it's something i can scarcely afford and that i'm having a new bathroom fitted next week which i need to pay for just makes me feel like the biggest cunt in the world for spending the money.

g-kit, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, don't. It's awesome to have one camera for just point and shoot crap and your pricey DSLR for the good shit, plus there are times when you don't want to take your fancy camera out and about in case something happens to it. It's always nice to have the option of taking a not quite so flashy (not to mention bulky) camera.

Kate, non masonic, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

mei, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Hey guys, I dropped my Canon ixus the other day and now the zoom doesn't work. The camera is fine otherwise (actually it has developed a tic - it now gives a little yelp, like the tiny bark of a newborn poodle, immediately after the shutter clicks - but it takes photos fine as far as I can tell) - it's no longer in warranty, so what's my best course of action? It's a relatively new camera, quite decent and I don't want to have to replace it, but I use the zoom a lot (it's the lazy photographer's best friend) and I'm pretty mifffed.

Mark C, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

Best advice I can give atm: don't do anything rash that you may regret.

g-kit, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Hehe thanks Greg :)

Mark C, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

It's a relatively new camera, quite decent and I don't want to have to replace it, but I use the zoom a lot (it's the lazy photographer's best friend) and I'm pretty mifffed.

What with 350Ds going for under 300 quid on eBay and Kate maybe selling her 70-200 f2.8L, I'd say the solution was obvious. But devastatingly expensive.

(Sorry to hear about this, Mark. Pam's old APS Ixus L1 just packed in one day in 2002 and never worked again; they're delicate little buggers).

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, buy Greg's! It's so obvious!

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not helping, am I?

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

Buy Gregs as a belated birthday present to yourself. Go on. You'll still use the ixus when you're going places you don't want to take the SLR to.

Vicky, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

I can't even pretend I'm savvy enough to get the best out of a proper camera - maybe one day but not now. I need something I can have in my pocket at all times.

So, I guess what you're saying is that it won't be possible to get it fixed? :(

Mark C, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

I took a peek at the other 10 DSLRs that I tagged up for "watching" on eBay and it seems that I did get a decent bargain - other 350D bundles that were ending at around 290-300 were not selling due to reserves not being met, and a bunch of Nikon D50s going for £300-330.
Plus, if I decide to sell, it looks like I'll easily make my money back (and maybe pocket a couple of tenners if I'm lucky).

Still feel guilty though.

g-kit, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

xpost to Mark, me too. my current camera is just too big and bulky for slipping into places and taking sneaky pics on the street.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

I can't even pretend I'm savvy enough to get the best out of a proper camera

That didn't stop me, dude.

g-kit, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I don't want to be unnecessarily pessimistic, but I've seen the electronics go on a couple of compact cameras (both well out of warranty) and there wasn't much that could be done. Worth a trip to a Canon dealer though, just in case it's easily fixable.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

What is a Canon dealer? Man this sucks, I am really annoyed. If it had happened a year from now it'd be a reasonably excuse to upgrade, had it happened 2 months ago I'd have been in warranty.

Mark C, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Jessops, maybe? There's a repair centre in Borehamwood (which is probably where they'd send it) but I doubt you could just drop in.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

I have a Samsung camera, I just looked in the Argos camera for ones that could do movies as well, and bought it. I'm happy with it.

jel --, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

the duty free at Schipol the other day was doing a really rather good Sony point and shoot for just yr 150 europes. I suppose you have to fly to amsterdam though which may put the price up a wee bit.

I have severe hankerings for a dslr - but as Vic points out, I don't even use the lumix to it's full extent yet so it would be a bit silly. I do have some cracking old school 70s pentax lenses for my Dad's old slr which i should dig out (fancy checking them out for me Jonesy?)

Porkpie, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

If you've got some of those great Pentax lenses it would be well worth checking out the new Pentax K10D which can use all K series lenses and is meant to be a rather good camera.

I bought my *istDS Pentax dslr because I had a bunch of manual lenses for an old K1000 and I still find that I get my best images using them.

treefell, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

I took one of the best photos what I ever did took on the way home last night. Clearly this is some kind of sign from TEH ISLAND that I should fully get this DSLR and stop moping about winning it like a fucking baby

g-kit, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

(Or so I keep telling myself)

g-kit, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think your Pentax lenses will fit my Canon EOS, Porkpie, but I'm happy to plough my way through a couple of boxes of Fuji Velvia at your expense on yr Dad's SLR if you like ;)

Mind you, I did just find this:
Sadly it also appears that it isn’t possible to make adapter rings that let you mount Pentax K (bayonet mount) lenses on EOS cameras with EF lens mounts. The Pentax K diaphragm coupling lever physically interferes with such a possibility. So you’d have to modify the lens (or the camera) to make such a conversion possible. Note that this does not apply to cameras compatible with the EF-S mount. The design of the EF-S mount, with its smaller mirror box thanks to the 1.6x crop factor, coincidentally permits the use of such lens adapters.

I've seen quite a few comments on various Flickr groups about how old manual lens + adaptor ring beats many modern AF lenses for pure image quality - y'know the sort, "I'll stick to the Leica my grandfather gave me on his deathbed" kind of thing. I'm sure it's true.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, Porkpie, if those old lenses are M42 screw mount, rather than K bayonet mount, then mounting them on an EOS body isn't that hard. The adaptors seem to range from 30 quid to 80 quid (the expensive ones have built-in chipsets so that the camera still gives a focus confirmation beep even though you've got a manual lens attached), but there's a low-end one on eBay at the moment in Hong Kong for 99p without any bids! £4 shipping. Tempting, innit?

ok, it just happened again when i clicked onto page2. flickr be crazy!

g-kit, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

It was busting my balls at first too!

I've started updating my flickr with pics from my trip to Cambodia (with just under 1,000 pics taken there I'm hoping to be done sometime before I'm dead). Here's one of the ones I threw into the ILX pool:

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

See, I was worried there because I've been friended by people on there who have no pictures available to view, and then I click on their 'favourites', and then I'm spending the rest of my lunchour checking our acceptable use internet policy.

Mippy, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

God, I have a load of Holga prints to scan in. I need to build my TTV filter this weekend after having a Duaflex kicking around for about two months waiting for me to pull my finger out and go get mountboard.

Mippy, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

ok, Jonesbot and I are fiddling with my lenses (and drinking) - the stock lens onthe slr is a takumar 55mm F2 (part code 4850703) (M42 type) with a skylight filter attached. and it's k-chunky :) Unfortunately the slr seems to be buggered :(

Also - Telephoto lens is on one of many unpacked boxes, which is a shame. I have found a 2x collar though.

there's a separate argument that using a 50mm prime on a 1.6x-cropping D-SLR - which I think they all are, aside from the high-end full-frame Canons - is a bit restrictive, as it's like using an 80mm fixed focal length lens on a 35mm film SLR.
I've noticed this too, and really don't understand it. 85mm is the perfect focal length for portraiture. You get a bit closer than most people are comfortable standing, and faces get nicely compressed.

The best thing about the fixed lenses is their speed, though. I hired a 5d with 85mm f/1.2 for a thing last year, and it's completely addictive. Wide-open the focus area is so thin that at some angles you can't get a whole eye in focus. You get a lot of duds, but otherwise it's a good way to get much softness. Can't really post any of the pics I took with it here, but did this one of Grimly Fiendish. I like how the pint and shirt just dissolve.

.stet., Friday, 23 March 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Having just said all that about fast lenses ... I've got a canon 75-300 f/4-f5.6 lens for sale if anyone wants a shout at it. It's not ace -- hunts a lot and bit soft wide open, but is a lot better on a tripod and stopped down a bit.

.stet., Friday, 23 March 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, slocki is doing HDR. One day I'll get round to having a go at that...

Stet - good point about 80-85mm forcing you to stand further away from the subject and hence having a beneficial effect on the act of portraiture - you're not shoving a lens in someone's face.

I don't think I'm in the market for your 70-300 though; I've got the manual lens bug now that I've ordered a M42-EOS adaptor. I'll see how it works with Porkpie's Super-Takumars and then start scouring eBay for cheapo '70s Pentax and Zeiss lenses. It's the only way I'll ever be able to afford any more lenses. Manual focus on the 300D is going to be difficult unless I splash out for a proper focus screen (didn't get the chipped adaptor) and am brave enough to dismantle the camera in order to fit it, but we'll see how I get on.

(This should be on the camera thread!)

Michael Jones, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

i paid for the 350D today. ouch.

g-kit, Friday, 23 March 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

Does the focus indicator not light up when you've got focus on a manual lens? I'd steer clear of opening it up -- had to do that once on an EOS 5 and don't want to try it again!

.stet., Friday, 23 March 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Friday, 23 March 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

what's up with people who post weird awards and shit on your photos?

Er, they're idiots? I think I'd delete a comment like that on one of my pictures. Not that anyone is likely to give me any awards.

Does the focus indicator not light up when you've got focus on a manual lens?

It does if you get the more expensive chipped adaptor, which gives some kind of feedback to the body, allowing it to do the focus beep thing in manual (I'm really not sure how this works). Otherwise you've basically got a hunk of metal and glass on the front of the camera and the body doesn't communicate with it at all, so you're on your own with focussing (things are easier if you replace the focussing screen with a split-prism screen, which involves dicking about close to the mirror with a knife and tweezers). The viewfinder on the 300D is pretty dark and the focussing screen of practically no help in manual. You need lenses that step-down for metering too (otherwise your TTL metering in Av is useless). Keep watching my Flickr for experiments!

I didn't know colourspace could differ from browser to browser. But then Canon FVU 1.3 and Photoshop Elements 3.0 seem to show RAW images differently.

I'm gonna test this new HTML conversion thing with a proper Flickr link:

Michael Jones, Saturday, 31 March 2007 08:32 (eighteen years ago)

It's not so much that they differ, it's that Firefox completely ignores profiles, while Safari uses Colorsync and other tricks to match the colours. There's a website out there where a guy spends an amazing amount of time girning and griping that this ruins his wonderful web-designs.

Ok, so I have another offer for some of my work pics to be included in a book, but they neglected to mention paying me. I've done this before, like 2 pics, for free, in another book. Another time, I was actually offered MONIES for another batch, but I missed the publishing window for various reasons. This time, I have, on one hand, work saying "do it, it's good publicity 4 us" and on the other hand I want to turn around to book people and say "fuck you, pay me". What to do?

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

I don't care about any of my work shots tbh, but I'd like to say fuck them and get paid, because it'd be a first for me. Plus I just bought a lens and it'd be so awesome to get the money back for it, I'd probably have to go and have a wank.

I think we need to get to the bottom of why Porkpie's photo of Carsmile (embedded on the WDYLL 4/07 thread, but not as a link) has garnered 1,456 views! I think one of the first photos I took with my Canon Ixus i three years ago was of a rain droplets on a leaf. If I'd been on Flickr at the time I'm sure I'd have uploaded it to every public group going, amazed as I was at the quality of the image. Thankfully, by the time I did have an account, I'd sort of got wise to that particular cliche and so was spared the collective yawn it might've produced. Looking at it now, it's not even a very good macro shot and the colours are rubbish.

xp - Yeah, I prefer that shack too. Some mad post-processed contrast/saturation, surely?

A couple of things:

1) My 50mm f/1.8 just arrived! Can't wait to go home & play.

how many of you don't use tripods, or how often do you use them when you do? I think I need one for everything, I took a shed load of pictures inside the house yesterday and virtually every single one had the shakes.

kate's pics = pwnj
stitching: no idea
tripod: i use one at work for every shot, but have never used one outside of work. i just take lots of shots of everything, and choose the least shakey one. i am a pretty shakey motherfucker, unfortunately.

g-kit, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

xxpost Indeed so. Those are wonderful!

nathalie, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

Fast lens, high-ish ISO, exposure compensation down a notch or two - my only recipe for blur-free indoor shots (and seeing as I'm usually chasing a two-year-old around, tripod is kinda out of the question), but I'm sure you're doing all that already. Outddors at night, I find a wall to jam the camera up against or (better) actually rest on.

I have a cheap'n'cheerful telescopic tripod that tends to sag a bit under the weight of the SLR/D-SLR; I could do with a good one really. I'm amazed that Kate doesn't use a tripod!

I've only used the automated stitch function in Photoshop Elements a couple of times, producing the likes of this (which isn't much cop):

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/49/126562747_3a6a1992a0.jpg

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

Fast lens, high-ish ISO, exposure compensation down a notch or two

hmm, i've been trying the fast shutter speed and then compensating and getting no luck, but not really messed with the sensitivy part.

the lego men pic was taken on a tripod, which shows. i think i'll need to stick to using one as often as I can because i'm generally a shakey person, like teh kit.

Ste, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

What camera do you use, Ste? (Sorry if we've discussed this before).

I'm fairly steady (!) - I actually regulate my breathing in an attempt to get shake-free shots, which is fine unless you pass out. But now I have this old Zeiss 135mm telephoto, there's no substitute for a tripod (I'm all over the place with it). I'm thinking of experimenting with some cheap extension tubes for bargain-basement macro next (but this really belongs on the camera thread) and that, with the Zeiss, will make the camera stupidly long and unbalanced - so I might even need a monopod under the lens.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I always hold my breath before hitting the shutter release.
I also tend to shoot sequences of three shots to compensate for possible heavy-handed shutter release technique - if shot 1 is fuzzy due to pushing button and shot 3 is fuzzy due to release of button, shot 2 is likely to be the pick of the bunch. Obv this is expensive technique if you're not using digital.
That said, I can see that my brand spanking new Thrifty Fifty is really going to help shakeyhand kit; wide open, it really lets you crank up the shutter speed, even indoors.

g-kit, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

I've been looking to enroll in a photography course but they are all THREE EVENINGS a week. I can't do that sadly. :-(

nathalie, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

it's a fuji s7000, it's not actually mine. i'm just starting out and a friend let me borrow this for practising with. i just had a blast with it at lunchtime, was a little better. I'll try the breathing thing as well.

erm yeah sorry if i've taken this thread too far from flickr topic.

Ste, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

You don't need lessons Nathalie, I never had any. Just muck around and experiment a lot!

Kate, non masonic, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

I'm shakey, but Stet taught me the trick of pressing the camera really hard against your forehead/nose and holding your breath, and that sorts me out.

Madchen, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

S7000 looks like a nice camera; don't think you can change aperture on it, but it seems to operate in the f2.8-3.1 range, which is pretty fast. What usually lets down P&S cameras is the CCD is necessarily pretty small which means high ISO settings are very noisy (ISO 400 on my Ixus is worse than ISO 1600 on my SLR).

(Hey, it's my fault if we wander into camera geekery - I can't help myself. I've been looking up hyperfocal distances and DoF calculations this week, like I'm a first-year physics undergrad again. Not that I recommend anyone else should do this.)

I actually don't hold my breath, but breathe out very slowly as I press the shutter. I think. I'm not sure, I'd have to go and take a picture.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I always hold my breath before hitting the shutter release.

ah! don't hold yr breath! exhale before squeezing! like a gun!

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

To be honest, pushing the camera into your face makes more difference than the breathing, I find.

Madchen, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

I really don't think a photography course for £££ & 3 nights a week will give you any more an improvement in your photographs than reading books and looking stuffs up on the interwebs. That's all I ever did.

I like that people are finally reminding me that I need to breathe. My mum always said this day would come.

i wish tripods were magically light and telescopic and able to pop out of my camera's base at the touch of a button and then disappear when i'm done with them.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

I really don't think a photography course for £££ & 3 nights a week will give you any more an improvement in your photographs than reading books and looking stuffs up on the interwebs. That's all I ever did.

It depends on the type of course, I'd imagine...I've learned tons from the interwebs but the foundation for anything resembling photography for me is taking a couple of darkroom classes in college. The sheer labor involved in getting a good print out of an okay negative teaches you LOADS, the hard way, about getting great negatives to begin with.

As for the shakes, indoor or outdoor it's the same deal, don't go any faster with the shutter than your lens can handle. I've become by necessity a sad expert in the dark art of squeezing decent shots out of razor-thin depths of field tho - http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=423680490&size=l is a recent one that came out especially good.

Or use flash, I guess.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

i had a great set last night after work, sky was gorgeous clear blue around our nearby nature reserve. and not a shaker among them.

Right at the end I was taking a photo of large brick tunnel when a white dove landed on the top of it, against the blue sky it looked fab. Then I realised I'd used up all my memory card and then see me scrabbling about trying to find the delete frames option for a minute until unfortunately the dove flew off.

I got one shot of it, I'll post it later.

Ste, Thursday, 19 April 2007 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

Ok I lied, apart from the odd picture of my kids it's still mostly rubbish in there apart from my snowy tree and cool shark. Add me anyway! I shall take pictures of my gerbils being cuet!

onimo, Thursday, 19 April 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

Stet taught me the trick of pressing the camera really hard against your forehead/nose and holding your breath, and that sorts me out.
Did I? Breathing out slowly is def. the way to go. I may have been drunk. However, having been shown how to use one properly, I now think monopods are aces.

How do you use a monopod properly? Brace it against your chest (that is, in situations when there's no solid object to rest it on)?

Bnad, Monday, 30 April 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

stick it in the ground (soft earth is best), and have a friend help you up onto it. stay perfectly still (it helps if you have a good sense of balance), and take your shot.

yes

Ed, Monday, 30 April 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

yes, i think so. i actually was going to come on here and ask a question about groups, that's funny. do you guys join up many groups or anything like that and share your photos to try to get more comments/contacts etc? i started doing that out of boredom a couple weeks ago but i'm starting to wonder how it actually helps to get "constructive criticism" from people whose photostreams i look at and am totally disinterested in and/or actively dislike. it also seems that 9/10 times the first comment sets the tone for everything that gets said? so if some crazy kitsch fan comes in and raves randomly about some goofy figurine, i get 7 other comments that just say cute.

are the groups basically a bad idea and i should go back to my old way of collecting contacts (ie reloading the "everyone's photos" page occasionally and looking at stuff that catches my eye)?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 30 April 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

i mean i am into getting comments/criticism/suggestions but when i get comments, good or bad, and then i go to this random person's page and it is nothing but obvious failed attempts to get on flickr's explore page (ie boring landscapes)/wannabe getty images/fucking macros of flowers, i mean it's obvious we're doing v v different things and this isn't v helpful.

BUT what the hell is the point of posting these things to flickr otherwise? conundrum etc.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 30 April 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

You turn one of your feet outwards, and angle the pole in so it is wedged in the curve of your foot. Like option 2, here:

I'm a member of 40-odd groups but only one of them is a "look at my pic, please" kinda group and I don't know why I bothered. I'm not interested in getting scores out of 10 or stupid bloody animated trophies in my comments.

It's chiefly London and camera/audio/craft/baking-geek groups (it's Pam's account as well as mine). Oh, and a Natural Light Child Photography group cos, well, that's what I do most of all with the camera. They're the only strangers who can see pix of the kids.

Michael Jones, Friday, 11 May 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, Ste - thanks for favouriting that Charity Shop Fire pic of mine! That was actually one I submitted to an attention-seekers' group cos I didn't feel it was gettin' any love. I don't know what kind of film I had in the FtB that day but the colours and the contrast are pretty rich, I think.

We still miss the Evergreen Trust shop - five years on they haven't built anything on that site.

what does a ned have?

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 28 May 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

A two-year-old Canon PowerShot A510. Already beyond outdated, I'm sure.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 May 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

it seems to be holding up OK? that's a real hard situation with a shit-ton of light coming through from one side like that with no fill aside from the white walls...

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 28 May 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, the camera itself works like a charm, don't get me wrong! And I knew the light issues were going to be like that -- actually I kinda liked it for a number of shots. ;-) But I need to figure out what to do with proper extended exposures for low-lit scenes. There's no rush, it's just one of those things I want to finally get down.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 May 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 May 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

monopod! or just close your elbows in, practice breath control and squeeze slow :-/

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 28 May 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

Monopod you say? I investigate. Anything in particular I should look for?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 May 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

one that has good weight to it. the thing abt a monopod is that it should not only act as a footprint, but also add inertia to the setup so that you're not wigging all over the place.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 28 May 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

Is good, thanks. I'll try to get one and get used to it before my next 'go to a festival and take tons of photos' orgy, which will be Halleluwah on Labor Day weekend.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

hott bitches be gettin a lot of hits. half of the traffic to my flickr is just ppl looking at photos of me and my female friends. i'm lucky if i get 10 hits on photos like the beach shot of richard, but 700 hits for a picture of drunk girls in a bar putting phones in their mouth. it's amazing.

Actually, if you do a search for "tourists", my shot of the Euro gals comes top, ordered by relevance. So maybe there's just a lot of people doing image searches for generic tourist shots for their bleedin' webzines. I must keep an eye out for unauthorised use...

How does Flickr decide what's an 'interesting' photo?

I ask because if i view my photos in popular order, and under the 'interesting' tab, the top photo has only been viewed 4 times and has 1 comment.

So why is it interesting ?

Ste, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

It is some formula based on views, comments, favourites and notes

Ed, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

Here is an article about Flickr interestingness. And another.

It's a bit complicated (though, going by my most interesting pix, you could well believe that it's just some weighted product of views, comments and faves).

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

(Actually, that's not true. My interestingness top two:

#1 Kristin Hersh standing outside the ICA in 1993 = 209v, 2f, 2c
#2 Hope Sandoval at a Mazzy Star gig in Manchester, 1993 = 286v, 4f, 5c

Now, KH is more interesting than HS but who is clicking on her pic has made the difference).

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

i had one (1) picture on explore for like, one (1) day at, like two-hundred-fifty (250) before it dropped off.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

According to Scout, I had three minor hits back in the spring of 2005 (none higher than #287) - a macro of loose typewriter keys, a framegrab from Ghost World and a 1973 pic of me & the folks in Southport.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

I have one rampant hugely popular (for me) picture that got as high as number 6, though right now it's sitting at 74.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

It is some formula based on views, comments, favourites and notes
And something to do with what context viewers see a photo in and then click through to it, and some other weirdness, I think.

I've never had a photo in interestingness, probably because I rarely put mine in groups. My doofus dog is my most interesting photo:

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

exactly what kind of dinosaur is that?

my "most interesting" picture is my brother being hassled by Imperial Stormtroopers. And it will be forevermore, i'm sure.

Err, that was a male one. The others were. heh

nathalie, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

(Actually, I didn't know until now that the selection was Flickr-based).

Quite a few things pass me by on flickr despite the fact that I spend about an hour on it everyday. I hadn't heard about this until someone in another group told me to put one in. There's something flickr-based at the Tate as well I think.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

do they let you know before they use them? i hope so.

g-kit, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 09:42 (eighteen years ago)

Tate group

I will contribute something to that one when I have time to think about the categories. I doubt I have anything that would merit final exhibition display but I guess I've a good chance of getting something on the screens (even if I'm not there to see it).

No, they don't but I'm fine with that. When you post an image in that group you basically agree to let them do anything with them. If you don't like that you don't post on that group.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

gee ok sorry

g-kit, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

i better go remove stuff from groups :(

g-kit, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

I think that only applies to groups which define their terms like that - i.e. "by joining this group you agree that we can make a big mural on the Falls Road out of yr best pics and not credit you, ya big dummy." In most cases I would've though that yr copyright prevails (in so far as anyone observes that).

A couple of friends have nicked my photos and put them on their own Flickr accounts, which annoyed me a bit. I ended up being all passive-aggressive and putting bylucy tags on them.

Madchen, Monday, 18 June 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

flickr aggression

sunny successor, Monday, 18 June 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

i try to be very careful if i'm uploading someone else's photos to my flickr and note on the set and usually on the individual picture who took the photo (it happens on occasion that SOMEone else uses my camera and takes some test snaps of friends and i upload them to my site so the ppl in the picture can see themselves). i don't understand why people wouldn't credit their friends.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 18 June 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, thing is, i'm really careful wrt to other peoples' pics; ie, this weekend someone borrowed my camera to take a few shots, and i was really careful to pick out which they'd taken and make sure I didn't upload them to my flickr, since they weren't actually "mine".
so i was a bit gutted when somebody had taken like half a dozen of my shots from the same night and spammed them all over myspace & facebook and whatever else without even asking, let alone a credit. especially considering that I've quite obviously and deliberately enabled all the flickr 'security' faffage. it was quite disappointing.

problem is, Ally, is that i'm convinced that no matter how I ask for credit/linkage, I'm still going to sound like I'm arsey about it.

g-kit, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

and I'll freely admit that I *am* being arsey about it.

g-kit, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

fkin hell Ste, that pic is great

g-kit, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

fuck em, be arsey about it. why'd they nick your photos anyway?

Ste, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

because they're so good, obv ;)

g-kit, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

why would anyone steal photos unless they are of themselves or some event they attended? are they trying to pass them off as their own? i dont get it?

sunny successor, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

they are of some event they attended. but that doesn't make them any less my photos!

g-kit, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

perhaps your friends don't realise that they are high art photos or photos by which you make your living or maintain your reputation or photos that represent personal emotions or individual character

RJG, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

indeed.

g-kit, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

hmmmm i dunno about that situation. are they just snapshots you took at a party? i mean, i personally am not really bothered by people taking photos of themselves or their friends from my flickr and posting them on myspace to be honest.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 18 June 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

scroungers need to buy their own camera tho?

it's like going to a party and drinking everyone elses booze

Ste, Monday, 18 June 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

it's just that i didn't get a credit at all, otherwise i wouldn't care. by all means, LINK to my flickr or something, but DON'T find a workaround for the flickr transparent image thing, download the photo, upload it to your own photobucket and then bandy it around like it's your own image. it's just a matter of politeness/courtesy imo.

g-kit, Monday, 18 June 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

if you wait until everyone has drunk their booze then access their stomachs and copy their booze to your own stomach

I love flickr but the bods in charge seem to be fcking up the whole censorship thing and being a bit insensitive about it at the same time so I post this in support of All The Germans Who Want To See Rude Bits.

-- Madchen, Sunday, 24 June 2007 12:05 (2 days ago) Link

Well, it's not just Germany. It's Singapore and some other places. I haven't read anything about nazi imagery. All the anti-censorship sites are going on about not being able to access the rude stuff. It's certainly very confusing. What I don't understand is that some people are migrating to ipernity or zoomr but if the problem is with German (or wherever) law won't they all have the same problems?

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

For all that, I have to say I also support Germans who want to see Nazi imagery.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 09:39 (eighteen years ago)

Not that I'm supporting Nazis, obviously.

oh man, it happened again. stolen photos. this time by a musician i took some shots of at a gig. i wasn't asked, and i was given no credit. thing is, i'm really proud of this particular shot.
this is starting to make me either not upload stuff to flickr anymore or splash big pawprint watermarks all over them or something.
i also feel like it totally devalues what i do, if that makes sense.
should i say something in an email? it sucks that people are putting me in this position where i feel like an asshole for asking them not to do something they shouldn't. GNNGH.
why, at no point when they are deliberately evading flickr "security" do they not realise that I don't want people using my photos without asking?

I borrowed a mates IR filter for my D80 last night. Not great quality shots (i had to expose for almost 30 seconds on some leaving the foliage edges blurred) but certainly made these locks near my area more interesting.

Did a search for Storms on flickr recently and was annoyed at the high number of awful HDR photographs people are now uploading. They look dreadful, and are clearly now becoming an excuse for people who are unable to manage camera exposure properly.

Ste, Thursday, 11 September 2008 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

I wish I had been able to get the composition just right and had the flag pole unobstructed but there were too many people and things around to get the right position:
