Amazingly i seem to have lost weight over the xmas period, not weighed myself but i've been able to move up another notch on my belt. How's everyone else done?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 6 January 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

I gained some weight (and lost muscle mass, sob) over the weeks leading up to it, due to working full-time and not going to the gym, combined with excessive takeaways.

However last week I was very ill with the flu and couldn't keep any food down for several days. I weighed myself Monday and discovered I've lost the pre-xmas weight and more, and my weight is now at its lowest ebb in years. This is handy, but I don't recommend it as a dieting strategy--I would much rather have been having fun on NYE rather than losing weight in that manner.

I'm going back to the gym as soon as my lingering cough goes away--I miss having stamina and flexibility.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 6 January 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Nice going, Leigh - you seem to be so in the losing-weight zone I'm not surprised! I managed to not put on the 7-10 pounds I was anticipating in December, so I'm finding myself in the rather unusual position of starting January weighing less than 13 stone - a whole 9 pounds lighter than this time last year.

Which means that my motivation to diet is rather weaker, but I know I could still do with losing a fair bit - I just need to psyche myself up for a few days before getting stuck in.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 6 January 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

i've lost 4.5 kgs in one month because my upstairs neighbour keeps waking me at about 2 or 3am every day and i can't get back to sleep so i roam about my apartment and hence add about 4-5 hours 'exercise time' to each day. i thought you were supposed to put on weight if you didn't sleep properly; that it was supposed to make you crave sweet fatty fixes, but all i want is a fucken axe and 2 minutes with the prick upstairs. i should be thanking him cause it will mean i reach 60kgs before i turn 30, which is an arbitrary and pointless goal of mine.

remless (not entirely unhappy), Thursday, 6 January 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

I put on 3 pounds over Christmas. Although this sets me back a bit, I'm very very relieved that it wasn't a whole lot more!

I suspect it was due to:
1) My brother eating all the (mince)pies
2) Religiously exercising every day

It's the drinking that does me in every time! I was going to have a dry January to reverse the ill effects, but boys keep dragging me out and forcing pints of bitter down my throat.

Masonic Boom-Boom (kate), Friday, 7 January 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Might I revive this thread, to say HALF A STONE GONE BYE BYE? Might I? Thank you very much boys and gurls! I must say I note this loss nowhere on my pot-bellied crock of shit body but would the scales lie to me? Probably, probably they would, wouldn't they.

Still, even if it's misguiding, I have turned into the GYM GURU. 15 minutes on the running machine? Peasy! Stand aside Paula bloody Radcliffe.

Sarah C, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Whereas I am still a fat cow.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Good going Starbar. I think my diet is starting next Monday as I have just been to BODEAN'S and on Friday will be going to the OXO TOWER which is so fattening it's even named after food.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah for Starry indeed! Hurrah!

I am pleased to report that despite having comfort food stuffed down my throat all weekend by a boy, I actually hit eleven and a half stone for the first time since 2003.

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)

I will be disappointed if my dinner there consists of anything other than a single artfully arranged stock cube.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Aha my secret feeder plans have not been in vain. Hahaha. What? Hello! Another steak and ice cream sandwich?

I seriously can't feel this weight loss anywhere, but recently the improvement in my fitness levels at the gym has been utterly shocking. We'll see if this continues, I suppose. I can't say I've been particularly dieting either!

Mmmm is SGS taking you up the Oxo Tower Mark? I'm sorry, I hate myself for that.

hoho xpost!

Starry Sarah, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else here attempting BFL?

I lost 5kgs before Xmas, thought I'd put it all back on again but only put 1.5kgs back on. Psychologically, this is brilliant.

papa november (papa november), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

What is BFL?

Anyone got any ideas how I could lose a stone before my birthday (in a month)?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

go vegan. seriously. you'll lose a few pounds in the first few weeks, then blam - you'll probably drop about ten in the weeks after that.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but think of the shit you have to eat (and the ambrosia you're not allowed to).

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

God I'm not sure how I'd handle being vegan! No dairy!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Supposedly people who do our food intolerance testing programme drop a lot of weight very quickly and immediately, but I wouldn't reccomend it if you don't have several hundred pounds kicking around saying SPEND ME SPEND ME like none of us do.

I wonder if I can persuade them to test me in lieu of my contract being renewed...

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to get that done, but if they said wheat I'd have to say tough!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, me, too. Well, not wheat obviously as I don't really eat that. But if they said "coffee" or "cheese" I'd be devastated!

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

i ate really well when i was vegan. i'm not a big fan of meat or cows' milk to begin with, so it wasn't a huge hardship. then again, nyc is really vegan-friendly so that's a big reason why i didn't feel too deprived.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Lauren, I was being tongue in cheek. I could probably do it if I tried, but I certainly don't want my long-term diet to go the veggie/vegan route, so a moderation of what I like is probably the best move for me.

I can't see myself doing any exercise until it's warmer, although I did buy a skipping rope last weekend (I haven't used it yet).

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

I can't seem to lose any weight at all. I put on around 15 pounds in 3 months last year due to various problems with meds (Efexxor is the tool of the devil, btw) and I just can't take it off. I think I may be developing a milk allergy, and this has something to do with it. (Can't process the fat?) I am going to the doctor today so maybe she'll tell me what's what.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I've started yoga classes, but once a week isn't really going to help me that much. I wish I could be one of those types of ppl that can get up at 6 & do some exercise before I go to work, but I just can't! I don't really have any trouble being vegetarian, but vegan seems impossible. What would I have to avoid? Dairy, eggs, what else?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Milk, cheese, yoghurt, eggs, honey.

All the things that make life worthwhile, IHMO!

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Honey?! Really? I never knew that.

(it's not like we kill or abuse the bees, apart from a puff of smoke every now and again. And we even build them a home!)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Not all vegans are alike, but I know many that don't eat honey. It does come from animals, after all.

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

it's fine, mark. vegans are used to abuse!

xpost - dairy and eggs are biggies, but theoretically you should avoid anything made with animal products/by-products. this is what a typical vegan day for me was:

some kind of hippie cereal w/ vanilla soy milk and fruit
vegetable sushi or roasted veg wrap, pumpkin cookie from hippie bakery
sauteed tofu, sesame broccoli, rice

snacks: dark chocolate, homemade popcorn, crisps, fruit, granola, toast, etc

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I pretty much avoid all animal products (apart from dairy & eggs obv) so it shouldn't be too much of a bind tbh.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

But honey comes from animals in a mutually beneficial, renewable way. It just seems stupid and bloody-minded. Animalist bastards, these vegans.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Matt's basically vegan and wheat-free at the moment, though not 100% strictly. I share his smoothies and eat whatever he cooks me, but I don't enjoy preparing food enough to give up the sandwich option...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Cutting out wheat does seem to help a lot of people lose weight - I cut out wheat and most dairy after being diagnosed with colitis last summer and lost almost a stone straight away - and it's stayed off.

Mind you, being a vegetarian in the first place and then not being able to eat dairy or wheat either, doesn't leave a whole lot of food left to get fat on...

Mog, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine was recently disagnosed as gluten intolerant & she has lost so much weight by cutting it out of her diet.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I think my problem is that I've been off & on Slimming World for so long that it no longer works as a diet for me anymore. According to it I can eat unlimited amounts of fruit, pasta, pots, rice but how can that work? I don't even know what I shoudl & shouldn't eat anymore, all I know is what the Slimming World diet thinks of particular foods.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

go vegan. seriously. you'll lose a few pounds in the first few weeks, then blam - you'll probably drop about ten in the weeks after that.

Well, this didn't happen to me, more likely I just gained weight. You can eat unhealthy shit as vegan too. For the first six months I kept eating whole jars of cocoa nougat spread, because it was the closest vegan equivalent to chocolate I could find.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Well it's hardly surprising then Tuomas tbh!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

ha. yes, the success of my suggestion is totally contingent upon not gorging on dairy-free chocolate and chips and cola and things like that.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

I had to give up caffeine too, so cola and coffee went right out the window.

Luckily curries are fine, else I'd have really had no reason to live.

Mog, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

"I don't even know what I should & shouldn't eat anymore, all I know is what the Slimming World diet thinks of particular foods."

Perhaps you could go see an idependent dietician? they are more middle of the road than most diet organisations.

isadora (isadora), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

I think I might try that, but I'm sure it'll be expensive & I just don't have the cash at the moment!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 January 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Fuck fuck fuck - I'm back to a smidgeon under 13 stone, and that smidgeon won't exist after my posh dinner tomorrow night. Diet starts for real on Monday...

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 January 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry to keep harping on this, PinX0r, but I really think that getting some kind of nutritional/food intolerance advice will not only help you with your weight, but also might control your migraines!

But, same as you, though I'd like to do it, (I wonder how much of my mood disorders are diet related myself) I've not got the money either. :-(

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Thursday, 27 January 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Well I'm due a trip back to the docs soon actually Kate, cos his first solution is not helping, so maybe he could refer me or something. I cannot identify any food/drink myself that may be causing this.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 27 January 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

I have to announce that I have lost 8 kgs since mid december to present. I have also lost 1% of my total body fat. Yay!

papa november (papa november), Friday, 28 January 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

i'm starting to get back into yoga (for exercise, but also to relieve aches/tension). now i just need the discipline to stick with it.

amanda lear (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 January 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

I have a question that is not strictly about losing weight, cos I'm not trying to lose any (actually I'm trying to eat a lot more amnd work out more which will probably lead to weight gain), but it is about working out so maybe someone here has a suggestion?

I have a really weird back. Like my butt and thighs are pretty meaty for my size, but my back is like skeletal. It's weird, like I have muscles there, I can see them just fine, but my spine down to the back of my hipbones, it's like there's nothing covering them at all. Seriously, if I roll my shoulders forward a little bit you can see every bone back there. Which is weird, whatever, but the problem is that I started doing floor exercises again and I LOOK LIKE I'VE BEEN WHIPPED. I am covered in bruises, especially on my hipbones. At my old apartment, I had a carpet I could lay the mat down on, and at my old gym they had like very thick padded foam we could do the floor exercises on. Here, I have hardwood floors and I put down the mat with a towel on it and I'm still looking like I was just tortured in some BDSM extravaganza. It's to the point where lying in bed hurts because of the bruises.

Do I just give up on working out my abs? Does anyone have a suggestion for mats or extra padding? Do I actually have to go and purchase a 3 inch thick piece of foam that can't be rolled up?

It's really gross and unsightly and making me want to just go back to my old weight stablization method of smoking 2 packs and ingesting only coffee :(

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 4 February 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I've finally passed the 4 stone mark, seemed to take ages to shift. Am noticing a big difference now but still have a fair bit to take off.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 7 February 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Ally, try putting a cushion under the bits where it hurts. Or exercise on an eiderdown type thing. Or get one of those mat things for your own home. I can't do situps for the same reason - not my back, but my lower back and ass get horribly bruised.

(However, take note that excessive bruising can sometimes be a symptom of anaemia - so if this isn't the only thing that causes bruising, you might want to take an iron supplement or something.)

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Monday, 7 February 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Ally try one of those inflatable fitball things. You can do all sorts of ab exercises using it to support your lower back. It feels a bit awkward to use one at first, and you've got to make sure you're balanced on it in the right way so that it supports in the right places and you don't end up overextending, but the situps I do with one of those are more exercise per sit-up than just regular floor stuff. One important thing when using them though (for me at least) is to do as many back muscle exercises, side sit-ups whatever, as regular sit-ups on it.

sgs (sgs), Monday, 7 February 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

xpost with kate up there

you probably know what I mean already, but here's a picture:

sgs (sgs), Monday, 7 February 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

I feel like I've hit some kind of weight plateau which is making me a bit discouraged. My weight stays within the same 3-5 lb range and has done for a month. I'm still eating sensibly and exercising quite a lot so I don't really understand. I guess I am noticing a difference in terms of clothes that I can wear now which I couldn't wear before. I keep telling myself "muscle weighs more than fat" but that doesn't really help when I face the scales every morning. :-(

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Monday, 7 February 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Ally, what Sarah says - you have to make sure that you're doing as much for your back muscles as for your abs, otherwise you'll be unbalanced and various muscles will have to compensate for others, leading to further pain, problems etc.

Kate, if you have been exercising a lot then you are problem simply experiencing the muscle/fat paradox - the scales mean nothing when you know you're looking, feeling and wearing clothes better. Simply ignore the scales - this is a purely psychological hurdle.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking of starting triathlon training - was always a good swimmer and my running's improving. Not been on a bike in 20 years though.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 7 February 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Kate, back like, years ago, when I lost a shitload of weight, my weightloss plateaued at like 50 lb. loss -- so I upped the ante and started exercising two hours a day. It seemed to work. But in hindsight it probably wasn't the right thing to do as I gained it all back eventually.

I've read before that if you've hit a plateau you might want to consider eating a bit more rather than less.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Monday, 7 February 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Fucking hell Leigh, you are such an example to us all (or maybe you put us all to shame, one of the two)!!

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 7 February 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I dunno about that, if i hadn't put on such a shitload of weight i wouldn't have to resort to these extreme measures to take it off again. Having said that i'm reaping the rewards of my efforts and feel great for it.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 7 February 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

178 pounds this morning (12 stone 10 for our UK followers). 7 pounds to go.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Revive. I need some support, or something. How do people discipline themselves? That is my main problem, but at the same time I'm afraid of becoming someone who thinks about my weight/dieting/fat too frequently, ugh.

Leigh, what kinds of gym routines/meal plans do you go by? I know different things work for different people, but I can't remember what you are doing that's helping you, if you said it on another thread.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

I don't really have any meal plans and am yet to sort out a gym regimen. I've just been trying to eat lots of fruit, veg, fish and lean meat and walking lots. Am still falling off the wagon occasionally and enjoying the odd naughty treat but the weight's still coming off steadily.

It's worth bearing in mind that i was (and still am) seriously overweight and what works for me might not work for a slimmer person. I'm sure i'll have to be a lot stricter when i come down some more.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

dear ile agony aunt:

i have a single-serving container of miso broth that i'm considering having for lunch. i don't have any tofu to put in, but i do have some ramen. would you or wouldn't you?

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

I would, but my advice is maybe not to be taken. Except I know what I'm talking about above re: situps. Do you have any veg to add instead? spinach maybe?

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

waah, no spinach (seaweed would be better anyway).

lychee mello (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I had a free pass to the gym so I took a weighlifting class for the first time. It was fun. But every woman there was so much stronger than me.

A friend suggested this book to me "Food and Mood" -- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0805062009/102-9969809-3924953

Pretty interesting: apparently eating the bad type of food that you crave just causes you to continue craving it and to continue indulging -- like a vicous cycle.

Also, I noticed on the DS thread of '04 there was much talk of '50s-style bathing attire. Please continue that talk here, or any other swimsuit talk. I got a cherry-print two piece. Unfortunately, I don't have a '50s-type body,

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

I just can't get below 12 and a half stone (was 175.5 pounds this morning). Which isn't a disaster, but I'm going to need something new and different to happen to take me under. Maybe when I buy my new bike?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

I've managed it! I am the thinest and lightest I have been since I was 19! This is mainly due to dire financial circumstances menaing I have drastically dropped the amount I drink (Londoners may have noticed none FAPing), but I've been eating better too. Have stuck to wheat free - which I should because it gives me stomach cramps - cut back on cheese, switched to whole grain rice, made sure I am getting five portions of fruit and veg a day, eaten less potatos and smaller portions. I have also been walking EVERYWHERE.
I am now 8st 5lbs! Hurrah! My skinny jeans are now the most comfortable things ever!
Now I just have to maintain it.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

Anna, good for you honey! I'll buy you a g & slimline t if you come to Poptimism :)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Amazing what the walking does, though. Since September or so I've been walking to and from Waterloo station every day (about 50 mins brisk walking per day in total) and, although I'm hardly skinny, I can tell it's made the world of difference to what I can eat and drink.

On the down side, maybe if I hadn't done the walking I'd have forced myself to eat healthier. But I think I prefer the payoff this way round. Best thing is I maintained it though the whole winter, and now spring and summer is in the offing it'll be more of a pleasure and less of a chore.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Vodka and soda with slice of lime is the diet drink of choice! Not using coke as a mixer is very handy.

I have walked to Highbury from Crouch End and back four times in the last week.

(Mark, thank you, but circs. are dire until some mother fuckers pay me.)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Sigh. I'm starting to work on the Office Flab now. I used to walk for an hour every day, now it's curtailed to about 15 minutes walking every day (at least I do that, up the hill to Streatham Hill station). I thought I had not put on too much weight, but that was only due to dehydration due to the Extreme Death Flu. In point of fact, I have already gained in the vicinity of 3 to 5 pounds. :-(

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Aww kate, you'll get back on it!

Well done Anna!

I am trying again, I've got to do something! :-S

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

my man tits are getting bigger, so is my belly. I can't stop eating bacon. Im up to 220lbs....which is asinine. too heavy for 6'0 tall.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else find that they generally stay skinnier when they stay out drinking every night? Is it that you dance and stay up later, or is it that you drink alchohol and it makes you forget to eat or not want to?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Not really Roxy, because I tend to eat utter crap the next day to fight hangovers.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

i dunno... when i'm out drinking with friends we usually end the night eating starchy greasy things. and then i pass out when i get home. i can't remember the last time i did this though.

i love scotch, scotchy scotch scotch (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah, same. plus alcohol bloats me.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Drinking makes me want to eat. Or sometimes you have eat some greasy food before going to bed out of self-preservation.

I started going to the gym again last week. It felt great (although the "kickboxing" class I went to was pretty silly), I just have to keep it up.

xposts

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

No, I lose weight if I don't drink! I mean, alcohol is hardly non-calorific, dancing or no.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else find that they generally stay skinnier when they stay out drinking every night? Is it that you dance and stay up later, or is it that you drink alchohol and it makes you forget to eat or not want to?

Sorry Roxy, I think you're looking for justification here! I am totally and utterly the opposite.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Dang, guys! My sister agreed that she is skinnier when she is an alkie, too.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, maybe it does work for some - when I'm pissed, I seldom dance and always make sure I eat, and it's not usually healthy eatin'. So perhaps I'm not a good example.

I have just eaten a mixed fried Japanese lunchbox, and I swear I can feel it in my chin. Salad for dinner*, then.

*actually no, as I am allergic to lettuce**

**what a big poof I am

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I totally know what you mean Roxy. When I was younger I was skinny & I practially lived on cigarettes & wine! I did eat, but not so different to what i do now, so where has all this weight come from? arghh?!!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

my metabolism has totally crapped out. that's where i'm laying a lot of the blame.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

oh, and no more veganism and bad drugs.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Instead, carnivorism and GOOD drugs!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

oh, and no more veganism and bad drugs.

Oh yeah of course, that's why I was skinny, plenty of drugs!! damnit!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm bored with drugs.

Unless SSRI's count. Those do seem to make me forget to eat, though, so I guess that makes them *good* drugs.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I used to be a vegan, straightedge football player.

God, I was hot then (although retarded).

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I see photographs of myself when I was young and I want to murder my past-self for thinking I was fat. I was a skeletor with some muscles!!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Drinking usually means a weight gain for the week for me.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I see photographs of myself when I was young and I want to murder my past-self for thinking I was fat. I was a skeletor with some muscles!!

Yeah, no shit. I weighed 115 lbs. when I started college, and I was 5'7" then. I remember wearing a size 3 juniors, which is, like, a zero now. And I didn't even diet.

Shatterproof Glass (dymaxia), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

I've always been a fatty, so I can't look back all sad-like at pictures of me from the past.

My problem, in the past year, has been Domino's Double Melt Pizza. I was addicted to them, man. Also: donuts.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I ate about 4 donuts on Sunday. And most of them weren't even good donuts, they were just there.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Sample dialogue from the weekend

ML: And wow, you're looking svelte, lady! What have you been doing?
Me: Um, eating lots of donuts and drinking beer right now, whoops.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I think i've lost some weight over the weekend, although it's taken a nasty bout of gastroenteritis to do it - not to be recommended!

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

I will not be thin-ish much longer if I continue to eat shortbread and cheese for breakfast.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Isn't breakfast the meal where you're basically allowed to eat what you want, though? Because you basically spend the day using it up first?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

i had yoghurt for brekkie this morning - i've not had any solids since sunday evening. Think i may have returned to work too early.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

That sounds like my kind of breakfast Anna!

I would love to get back to my 25 year old self's figure & weight. Prada dresses fitted me back then, damn I must have been skinny!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

my friend and i are going to a stick-fighting and knife defense class next week. I AM SO EXCITED!

except you have to bring your own stick. i might have to take a saw to one of our brooms.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I've lost another couple of pounds which sounds pretty crap but considering the rubbish i've been eating yesterday i'm amazed i've not put a load on. Back on the straight and narrow now.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

Nice one Leigh. I actually *feel* skinny today for the first time in ages, but the scales told me I've put on some weight :(

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 8 April 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

Marianna and I have just done two hours at the gym. We are buff hotties!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 8 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and Leigh - that's great!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 8 April 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

I signed up for a free 2 month guest pass at a gym last night and worked out for 45 minutes. I need one of those i-pod arm bands... Anyway, I'm more skinny now than I have been since... since I don't know! Before college? But I'm still flabby and feel like a weakling. Thanks alot, Flu 2005! So, I plan to start gyming it up so I can carry amps up the four flights of stairs to the space without feeling like I might die.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 8 April 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

ugh, i've gained. i need an exercise regimen that actually works.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 8 April 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

I've actually been going to the gym, and it's been helping. Then again, I've had work nights all these week that have been filled with pizza, and the booze when I go home.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 April 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

I've hired a personal trainer. Hopefully this will work out.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 8 April 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm ready to give up. Nothing seems to work.

Kate / Productive Pedagog (papa november), Friday, 8 April 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

I've noticed something curious happening - loads of people are complementing me on how slim i'm looking in spite of the fact i've lost a max of 3lbs in the last month or so. Why now and not a few weeks ago?

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Leigh, maybe it's because it's been warmer out and so you've been wearing less frumpy clothes?

Jeff, are you serious? How much did that cost (you don't have to say obviously, just curious)? Do you mean one of those trainers who have their bio up with a huge photo on the walls of gyms everywhere?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Nah, it's actually been pretty chilly here, i've been wearing more clothes if anything. It's bizarre, not that i'm complaining mind - it's a nice ego boost.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

I bought a new bike! It's arrived! I now *have* to spend every weekenbd clocking up the miles as it cost me a fortune. Special bike shoes and religion-revealing cycling shorts! Yeah!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

I've been pretty good lately, going to the gym 3-4 days a week and not eating/drinking QUITE as much, but last night we just stayed in, drank beer and made oven-fried chicken.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

I've lost about 5 pounds by exercising and really watching what I eat. But last night was gloomy, so yeah, Chinese fried food and cartoons.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I was doing pretty good until I gorged on taco bell last night.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

I signed up for a total fitness package at Cheetah. It includes:

3 personal training sessions
1 nutritional consultation
1 fitness evaluation, 1 BIA
1 strength and cardio program

$119, not too bad. I just need to get a routine down, instead of doing whatever equipment strikes my fancy. I've been doing really well as of late, going to the gym at least 3 times a week. Not drinking in 5 weeks has helped as well. Plus my trainer is a cute little asian woman.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Leigh, I think I forgot to thank you for responding to my question up there! I have lately been trying to eat the 5-a-day fruit and vegetable thing and it's been a struggle, although when I do I feel better. Or maybe just smug. I think it took springlike weather to get me back into my gym routine. My membership came with several free personal training sessions and it really helped to have someone make up a routine for me. Now when I go there I feel like I have an assignment to complete and I feel like I'm getting somewhere, rather than just the vague idea I should work out until bored. It takes me the best part of 2 hours to get through the whole routine though, but I try to switch parts around sometimes to avoid boredom.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I think I have hit a plateau, ugh. I bought a new bathing suit to inspire me to lose those last 12 pounds.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

I've started going to the gym at 6am! I started working out with a trainer, and she told me to eat 120 grams of protein a day and eat about 1700 calories a day ("you'll need them"). She is tough! She kept poking my ass with her finger and saying "FIRE YOUR ASS!"

That's amazing! What does she mean? Like, your ass is not a hard worker and you should fire it from its job? Or like, your ass should step up the intensity (asstensity)?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

I just think of that one scene from Bring It On

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

I have kept off the 15 pounds easily so far from the "Lemonade Diet" (fast) I did from March 1 - 10th.

My girlfriend did it from March 15th to March 25th and lost 15 pounds as well.

My eczema cleared up, her skin problems cleared up. After the fast, we switched to a purely vegan diet whereas before I was a dairy and egg vegetarian and she was omnivorous. We eat almost nothing every day and we're not starving.

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

She means like, make your ass work!

If you're eating almost nothing, you are starving whether you realize it or not, buddy.

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

I've lost another pound which takes me to 1x stone on the button, am aiming to drop another stone by my birthday (8 weeks today) so i'll have to knuckle down a bit and cut out the 'treats'.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Lost another 2lbs, am well on course to ditch that stone before my 30th.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

Right. Today is supposed to be day one of SOUTH BEACH DIET PHASE ONE!

But for some reason I am finding myself REALLY wanting a beer.

Perhaps I could just follow the eating plan of phase 1 today but have a beer anyway. BUT THIS IS NOT RIGHT. Arrrrrgh!!!!

Leigh, I admire you :)

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

Maybe beer can be your ONLY SOURCE OF NOURISHMENT, Starry?

I was doing up my belt this morning and the prong slipped unheeded into the next hole along - result! I also seem to have slipped under 12 and a half stone, but whenever I do this, I have a celebratory lardfest and it all goes Douglas Tong.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

I am telling myself I can stick to the eating plan today, have wine and start the sobriety tomorrow. I mean, you've got to get yourself into training for this sort of thing, haven't you, moral panics abt obesity not withstanding. Cor well done Markster.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

Dance CONSTANTLY. Even on a fucking BICYCLE. On campus I rip everywhere at mach 5, completely deaf to surroundings cuz my mp3 player is ALWAYS maxed out volume, nearly killing like 10 students a day, and still manage to bust discernable moves while singing hot lyrics. If it's the right song, the right speed and wind and sun, I almost start crying from feeling so hype.

Drink only clear alcohol beverages, juice, water, tea, and stick to clean asian/superclean cracker food.

Smoke less than half a pack a day, FUCK COFFEE, you can do a little blow or tabs once in a blue but never jeopardize your skin with too much of them.

Laugh like a motherfucker all the time at everything, so dope for the abs.

PLAY HOCKEY.

I can type up my regimen if y'all want - I was chubby as fuck as a kid but since age 15 (a decade) I've ALWAYS been within 3 lbs of 135.

PLAY HOCKEY.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 22 April 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Do you mean field hockey or ice hockey? One is clearly better than the other, can you guess which? Anyway, I'm not getting on no BIKE, I like my atoms to stay human thank you very much.

Lucretia Myles Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 22 April 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

i gained about uh seven kilos. too busy (at work) to shake it off. i'm turning into a phat beeatch. kimora lee simmons (scheplling?) has got nothing on me. uh...

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

I am *loving* the bike, stationary and real thing (and always with tunes, oh yes, except when riding downtown). I just hit the love phase though, after slogging it out for 4 weeks to get there and before that just slacking on cardio, thinking that walking everywhere was enough (it wasn't, not in winter anyway.) So yeah, getting past the few weeks of adjustment seems the hardest part of adopting a good exercise regimen (and this is when most people quit, right?), but once past those weeks, it's good! So much more energy and happiness!

Perhaps I am cheesy, but listening to all the anniversary coverage about Terry Fox inspired me and I think about it when I feel like I want to stop exercising, that is, if a 20 year old guy with one leg and cancer! can run a marathon a day, day after day, then I can get my ass on a bike for 45 minutes (though I started at 25, and then it felt natural to move up in 3-5 min increments each time). Also: no chocolate or sugar, or only once a week, if it's, like, a gift (and then only a bit - plus, it messes up my skin). I do eat honey though, sometimes.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 22 April 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Gained back a big chunk of the weight that I lost last year, so some of my t-shirts are showing gut now when I try to rock 'em. Been biking to work (and it's heavenly, OTM rrrobyn), and I busted out the home gym for the first time in months a couple nights ago. Cutting back on the beer and the late night snacking.

Why do a couple extra inches around the middle freak me out so badly?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Despite not losing any weight, the personal trainer has been a success for me. I've got a routine established. I've been to the gym 4 times a week for the last three weeks. I feel a hell of a lot better, and my clothes are fitting slightly better, but no weight loss. I fear my medication is hindering my weight loss.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm not biking to work, but I've now started using my new bike, and so far I'm not enjoying it, but I can tell that's just a fitness thing, and in a few weeks I'll be lovin' it. I am still hovering around 12 and a half stone, but I reckon that another diet push plus biking *could* feasibly see me down to 12 stone. I'll have to work on it really hard, though - it's been maybe 12 years since I was that light...

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

I stopped going to the gym for like two weeks and LOST weight. Go figure.

(I think this has more to do with its being spring and thus my stopping eating like a bear bulking up for the winter than anything else. So keep on goign to the gym, kids.)

mouse (mouse), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

I've been going to the gym a few times a week. However, I was in New Orleans for two days and I ate:

3 shrimp po' boys
1/2 french fry + beef gravy sandwich
5 crawfish-stuffed mushrooms
2 lbs boiled crawfish
1 lb shrimp
1 Charlieburger
1/2 cheeseburger
Delicious chicken fingers (a few)
1/2 hot sausage po' boy

Um, maybe I should have posted this on the ipso fatso thread.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 24 April 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Lost another pound. Also had a health check at work and found out that my cholestrol is only 3.6. The lung function test said i had the lungs of a 21 year old which isn't bad considering i'm a few weeks off 30 and have smoked for 13 years.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

I feel like a total fattie right now because my bf's parents are in town and we've been eating out a lot. Then yesterday I was craving chocolate so bad that I left work to drive to the drugstore to buy a bunch of candy. I ate a whole TWIX bar! NOOO!O!O!O!O!O!O!O!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

I had a whole GOAN CHICKEN CURRY last night, but even so I weighed myself this morning and TWELVE STONE SIX*! Woo!

Next task - how to spend 10 days in the US and not put on an equivalent number of pounds...

*174 pounds

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

Where all will be in the US, Markelby? I remember at some point in your trip you're going to be outside of Boston, right? Anywhere else?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

oh wow, I just put on a pair of jeans that I thought were a different, bigger pair of jeans and had a moment of, hm, these fit well but feel a bit tighter than they usually do, but how could I have gained weight?! Then realized they weren't the bigger pair, but the smaller pair that I haven't worn for a long while. Hoorah! So going to the gym every day for mental sanity purposes is actually having tangible/measurable-in-inches (vs. "this is generally just good for you") physical benefits as well! okay okay, small victories, but nice.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Monday, 2 May 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

I joined the gym recently and met with a personal trainer for a consultation, in which my body fat was measured for the first time. What is an acceptable level? She said I was okay, but that I wouldn't want to go much above what I am. There is a chart I am supposed to fill out each time I work out. It feels like P.E. class.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 May 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

Precisely why I stopped using the chart after filling it out, oh, 3 times. I think I can take care of myself without a chart (and clipboard), seriously. But if you're new to weight training, it makes some sense - or write down your exercises on a small piece of paper if you're doing a lot in one visit. Body fat can be anywhere from 21-31% they say for women (who aren't pro althletes) - that's a pretty wide range though.
Anyway, hurrah! on going to the gym :)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 5 May 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm going again tonight. Also, last night I was crazy and did all my grocery shopping at Wh0le foods. I mostly bought fresh vegetables. I printed out a bunch of healthy recipes off epicurious.com to try out.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 5 May 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I was feeling very self-congratulatory today since I went to the gym last night and then finally mustered up the willpower to just get a salad for lunch (instead of the usual sub, Mexican, pizza, delicious deli sandwich, etc.). I was all "yeah, now I'm in summer healthy mode, gonna lose that winter belly", except now it's only 1:30 pm and I'm SO HUNGRY ALREADY.

Do I just tough it out, wait 'til dinner, have another salad tomorrow and assume that my stomach will get used to eating less for lunch? Or maybe keep eating carbs/protein but less of it?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Jordan, why are you on a diet anyways? You aren't fat!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Seconded! Anyway, I have found this to be true (hungerrr) when trying to eat better at lunch so I bring healthy snacks with me to work. My current favorites are fruit/laughing cow or string cheese/low fat wheat thins. Supposedly cheese is quite good because it takes longer to digest than sugary stuff.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Bring some snacks to have at work like some nuts and dried fruit and fresh fruit. Also, I like to have some nutrition bars on hand in case I'm really hungry and need some protein.

xpost.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I can lose any more. I've dropped another size this year, but my weight hasn't changed in the past couple of months. I hope this doesn't mean I'll start gaining once my free gym membership runs up. :-(

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I have not lost any weight past the initial five pounds. Time to stop beig lazy and start walking to work again.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, I feel like I've gained a few pounds since I last saw you guys. There's been a lot of late work nights and free pizza. It's probably 1/2 mental though, I already feel better after going to the gym a couple of times.

Anyway I got some trail mix out of the vending machine and I feel much better. Keeping nuts or bars on hand is a great idea, although historically I'm not very good at keeping food around "just in case" (i.e. I will eat it because it is there).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

I've lost 7 lbs... been going to the gym six days a week and cutting out refined carbs. STILL LOOK LIKE A FAETTY HOWEVER

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Thursday, 19 May 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

I am only about 8 pounds above my target weight, but because I look and feel pretty much okay 2 or 3 pounds below where I am now, it's going to be a struggle to get there. I also have two enormous restaurant meals in the next week, and have woken up this morning unaccountably carb-faced.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 20 May 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

TWENTY-FOUR grams of fat in a little thing of peanuts? Really?

45 grams of fat in the burger king tendercr1sp y'all. Just warning you...

I just checked the scales for the first time since christmas when I was 11.5 and now I am 13.6

I had slipped to 12.1 after christmas, naturally but now I am 2.5 stone over weight. GAH!

I need to lose this stat. I think.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Well done to all those working so hard to lose! I have lost 4 pounds after 2 weeks of dieting. I have this wonderful positive feeling about dieting & exercise at the moment. It's great. I am basically just getting of my arse & doing stuff. Usually when I get home from work I slump on the sofa & want to eat everything in the cupboard, but last night I got home, didn't sit down at all, just proceeded to mow the front lawn & do some weeding. Apparently gardeing is a good activity to do so that you don't actually feel like you are exercising. I have also just taken a walk to the shop & back. Maybe this renewed enthusiasm is all to do with the 5km run I have to do in a few weeks! *gulp*

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
I've lost another half stone. How much do reckon i'd need to lose to get into a lovely new pair of trousers that currently fasten but are eye poppingly tight?

leigh (leigh), Friday, 15 July 2005 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Why oh why did I pledge to eat healthily for the month of August? It sucks. No dessert, tiny snacks. And it's worse because we don't have any groceries right now so I end up eating peas and black-eyed peas for dinner to avoid eating pasta, or taking dry Wheat Chex as a snack. Fortunately I get paid today so I can go get some healthy but tasty food at the grocery store tonight, and that will probably make things more bearable.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

I've been having a hard time of it these past few days. Healthy food for lunch, walking the mile to the bus stop instead of taking another bus. No booze. Only two coffees per day. Fruit instead of snackies.

BUT TODAY I AM GIVING IN AND GOING DOWN THE PUB AFTER WORK!!!

I have just started another diet, as I aim to get from 11 stone 11 to roughly 11 stone 2. I had several pints of beers last night, then CRISPS appeared on the table. Today I have been mainlining dried exotic fruits, which will have UNFORTUNATE RESULTS.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't been doing that great on the healthy eating front (lots of meat and cheese), but I have been going to the gym a lot so I figure it evens out.

Eating pizzas that I construct myself has to be healthier than eating frozen pizzas, much less restaurant pizzas, right? Right?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

2005 was to have been the year I cut down on sweets. In some ways I've been successful. I worship at the altar of yogurt, I could eat it 8 times a day. My tastebuds do an ecstatic dance when I eat the plain stuff now; the presweetened fruity or vanilla yogurt is just too sweet.

But in these attempts to switch to less-sweet foods, I've become addicted to Trader Joe's Chili Lime pistachios. MMM spicy fat!

jennpb (jennpb), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

diets suck, but then again so does being unhappy with yourself! :-(

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

I had managed to lose a stone since christmas - losing a little in feb and march by just giving up booze and then losing the rest since June on south beach, but I just put on 5lb while on holiday in Porto for 5 days, so back to phase 1 i go :0(

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

I bet it was worth it. Was there BABY GOAT?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

we didn't have baby goat, but i had baby baby lamb - the main bit of the chops was smaller than the tip of my thumb!

there was also lots of salt cod cakes deep fried, and tuna fritters, and ham, and lots and lots of octopus, and rice and potatoes, and vinho verde and that eggy bread with cinnamon and syrup, and almond pie, and custard tarts, and rice cakes, and rabbit, and pudim, and those yummy croissant type things for breakfast with plum jam and hot chocolate. Actually, a 1lb a day wasn't too bad really.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Haha way to go with the diet support, well done us!

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

I've kind of stalled - not putting anything on but not taking anything off either. Lothian bus drivers are striking next week so i'm faced with a 7 mile round trip to on foot so perhaps these pounds will start to drop off again.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

Tim, you could be bragging a lot more on this thread :)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

I'm doing horribly at losing weight, but I'm running a lot more, so at least I'm healthy, I guess. I'm currently hoping for nice calf muscles to build up, that would somehow make me feel less bad about the other parts of my body I don't really like.

And chili lime pistachios sound really good. My fatty snack of choice is pepperoni...shh, at least I'm eating my vegetables now.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

How many pounds are in a stone?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

I can never remember whether its 14 or 20 (so it's most likely 16)

South beach isn't all bad - we just had rib-eye steak, spinach, mushrooms and garlicky chickpea mash (3 cloves of garlic and still vic couldn't taste it!)

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

It's 14.

And I'm happy to report that all this eating healthily thing and not drinking (except for last night oh dear) and walking to the bus stop thing appears to be paying off as I seem to have lost 2lbs over this past week.

(OK, it's probably only water loss, but still. It made me happy.)

Masonic Boom (kate), Thursday, 4 August 2005 07:14 (nineteen years ago)

Well done Kate! The opposite seems to have happened to me. OK so today is a new day right? Weetabix for breakfast.

Pink (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 4 August 2005 07:28 (nineteen years ago)

I have three pounds left to lose.

I am going to be very mean, and tell my not so nice boss that I made goal, as she has fallen off that wagon months ago. (Also reaching goal means getting recruited to work for WW which is my official excuse for leaving my current job.)

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Thursday, 4 August 2005 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
for those who have done weight watchers, can you share any good secret low-point snacks or meals?

nb this information is for my husband, who is seeing success! but it's still early on and he's so snacky. he is easting lots of fruits and veggies though so that's good!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

Is he a snacky ho?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

(sorry, I think that's a blountism)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

teeny, i don't know anything about weight watchers, but i do know from personal experience that if a snack has a lot of protein in it, i'm less hungry after. cottage cheese is a great high protein/low cal/fat option for that. nuts are good, but sometimes people don't like the high fat content. I keep string cheese around when i want a little something & want to feel like i'm not being *totally* healthy.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

I am now in the mid 12 stones!

so I figure I have lost about 0.8 of a stone

I'm doing OK

still gunning though

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

I've been infecting the chicago thread with all my talk of weight lifting. tonight I'm doing a deadlift for the first time. I'm pretty excited about it!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

i have lost 16 lbs. since may, but thats it! i keep losing 5 lbs then going on a wild eating binge and gaining it back

BAH

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

That's still impressive, Mandee!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

16 pounds is A LOT. Nothin' to be anything but proud of!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

I hope that didn't come off the wrong way. I just meant that 16 is quite an accomplishment. I can't lose 2 lbs to save my life.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

Quaker chewy granola bars are good candy bar replacement if you have a sweet tooth

And I like Rold Gold cheddar or honey mustard pretzels, 17 (or 19?) pretzels a serving

They are all around 100 - 120 calories, I think.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

So I've went back on Weight Watchers hardcore. I've been on 3 weeks and lost 11 pounds. From 196 to 185, I'm only 10 pounds above my lowest adult weight. 165 is my first goal, then 143, which is smack dab in the middle of they healthy range for my height. Also, but BMI finally dipped down into healthy, rather than overweight. Things are going good.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

Blimey! Well done you. First week of me back on my diet & I lost 2 pounds, so not quite as impressive as your loss.

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

Nice going Jeff! And you Pink!

I am still hovering round the 12 and a half stone (175 pounds) mark, oscillating upwards 3 or 4 pounds every now and again. I really need some kind of incentive to help me shift another 5 or 6 pounds and become properly gorgeous okay-looking. Any ideas?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

I find setting myself goals works. So for me there are 3 goals, a wedding in October, Christmas & then my 30th b/day in Feb. *gasps* *cries*

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Monday, 19 September 2005 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

It's that first 5 pounds, once I get past that I learn to detest food. Eating just becomes less and less relevant to me. That is of course when I hit the plateu right above my goal weight.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, good for you, Jeff. I'm still in the middle (actually the end, hopefully) of an eating too much/not going the gym phase.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

i've lost another 3 lbs.. yay!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

i lost about a stone since january by resuming regular gym-going, which has come as a total surprise. but a nice surprise!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

My bf (n/a) and I just joined a gym Thursday night. We went Friday night, Sunday morning first thing, and are going again after work today. :-D

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Monday, 19 September 2005 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

I found those little bite-sized rice cakes that taste like caramel corn, seven cakes = a one-point serving. Problem is mr teeny likes them too much and will go through three points' worth.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 19 September 2005 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

teeny, I know! I ate a bag of those once and realised afterwards, I could have had a small sandwich for the points value.

The full size Cracker Jack flavored rice cakes are good if you have a sweet tooth.

four weeks pass...
http://www.weightwatchers.com/ChartFX6/Temp/CFT1017_1158083020.png

getting better. I actually just started a new unrelated medication, and one of the side effects is weight loss!! hooray!!!

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 17 October 2005 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

You actually made a chart! Wow! Congratulations by the way.

nathalie, a bum like you (stevie nixed), Monday, 17 October 2005 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to stay away from bread and meat for a couple of weeks. Trying to eat fruit instead of sweets. (I may allow myself some candy on Halloween, though.) I busted out my juicer.

Scott has cooked me special diet dinners the past couple of nights. Last night I didn't give in to the temptation to drink beer though others were.

I was losing pounds steadily after having the baby, but I seem to have hit a plateau. At least I'm back to my prepregnant weight.

They say not to use breastfeeding as a diet strategy, but that's what I'm doing (while taking vitamins so the kid gets nutrients).

Maria :D (Maria D.), Friday, 28 October 2005 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

SIXTY ONE WEEKS LATER

I have finally gotten under 10 stone! And reached goal!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

Woohoo! Congratulations! I think I'll need to get on this thread once I have delivered. I had already gained some weight before becoming pregnant and now it's getting worse. I'll have to drop about 15 kilos (at the very least) after the delivery. Boo.

Nathalie is in Da Base II Dark (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

Oh my god, congratulations! Woo, Tokyo Rose!

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

Nice going. I am 12 stone eight and a half as of this morning. I guess it's a minor triumph to fluctuate so little as my thirties eat away at my trim physique :/

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

I seem to have shed all the weight that i put back on. Annoyingly this doesn't seem to be translating when i step on the scales, there's a stubborn couple of pounds that i need to shed to be the lightest i've been since the diet began. About the only good thing about the panic attacks i've been having is the lack of appetite.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks guys! I think the best part is I got my blood pressure down to a normal rate. And my 20-30 minute walk to the post office is doesn't feel like a big effort anymore.

Now I have to keep the weight off. Eek.

Nathalie, are you planning on breast feeding? That can burn a lot of calories!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

Well done!

I love south beach. I've lost another half stone since August, with lots of cheating going on, and can now fit in a suit I bought in 2001!

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

Help!

I'm tired and VERY emotional and I tend to overeat in these situations. There are TWO boxes of mince pies in the cupboard and I really don't want to eat them all. But I might! STOP ME!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 2 December 2005 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

I have lost a quarter of a stone this month down to not eating through love & illness

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

I blame my loss on stress. Stress and smoking and not dating someone whose idea of "dinner" is pasta and more pasta.
