three things are certain in life: death, taxes, and that no team coached by marty schottenheime will ever go to the super bowl.

but who will it be, in the end?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 9 January 2005 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

or marty schottenheimer, even.

my dream superbowl = jets v. eagles. though i think that it will be the steelers that will represent the AFC this year. and the eagles will win it all (terrell or no).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 9 January 2005 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

well, it certainly wont be any team from the nfc.

i think that pittsburgh will do it this year.

I love that group that did the Rams game! They do the Sunday night games on ESPN, and I'm pretty sure I've heard them clinking bottles together during games.

Today's games were shockingly decent.
Seattle scarfs it yet again -- on what else? A dropped pass.

WHO WAS THE CRACKHEAD DOING THE RAMS GAME
At the end of the game they were fighting in the book to be the first to suck Holmgren's cock, "Holmgren's one of the greatest coaches in the game ... they'd be nuts not to bring him back next year ... the team is young and improving, they'll be back in the playoffs next year ...".

Er, HEY DIPSHITS, HOLMGREN'S NOW IN YEAR SIX OF A FIVE-YEAR PLAN TO OVERHAUL THE SEAHAWKS, AND HE'S YET TO WIN A PLAYOFF GAME.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 January 2005 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

... fighting in the BOOTH ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 January 2005 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

My Chargers laid an egg in overtime.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 9 January 2005 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Disaster! "The Sport Reporters," which I usually watch, includes Stephen A. Smith this morning in the Chargers/Seahawks autopsies. Mute button mute button mute button!

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 January 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck both the Rams and the Jets as they apparently conspired to keep my beloved Saints out of the playoffs. Cocksuckers. As such I am left rooting for the Colts and their wildly inconsistent (and frightening) play style.

adam (adam), Sunday, 9 January 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

but Madden is right about that! it's incredibly horseshit stupid to basically give up once you are in field goal range.

ryan (ryan), Sunday, 9 January 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally pumped! They might even start showing games here before 3am! Imagine.

Barry's NFL-watchage is another Canadian worry ticked off my list.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 9 January 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-but canadian football is supposed to be totally rad!!! he's a goddamn traitor izwhatheiz!!

let's talk about how mike martz is the most arrogant, priggish, smuggish, crybaby wussiest sonofabitch in the galaxy. god i want to punch his fucking face in. i mean he's great for shedding the west coast (which is/was killing the nfl, seriously) but...what a fucking pompous pussy.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 9 January 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Canadian football is good too! You'll have to pay attention to both. But be prepared to see nothing but Bills games when Sunday rolls around (at least in Toronto).

Don't worry about Martz -- he'll get duly squashed by Philly next week.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I hadn't even realised there was a CFL! *sweet*

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

it's really awesome! they have extra-wide fields for added zigzagging and teams with names like the ARGONAUTS. but i know aboslutely nothing about it other than that.

wow denver is already getting steamrolled.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark are peeing all over the Denver secondary. I could probably go do a couple hours of errands and not miss anything...

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear Channel 5,
Plz show this instead of 'A Knight In Camelot'. Also maybe rerun Popular?
Cheers, Greg

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(sigh, so I found out that itv2 had bought the playoffs off five and got excited and went downstairs and switched to itv2 and they were showing football and I thought "awesome" and then suddenly they were all "NFL! PLAYOFFS! HIGHLIGHTS! MONDAY! 8-9!". Grah.)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"highlights"

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, though.

at least the second game has a chance of being interesting.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Canadian football summarized : twelve to a side, wider and longer field, deeper endzone, three downs, larger ball.

Since there are only three downs, it's a more passing-intensive game, which results in higher scoring games compared to the NFL.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Manning, 360 yards passing IN THE FIRST HALF OMG.

Interesting to watch players late in their careers doing tryouts for their broadcasting careers after their playing days are over. I've heard Strahan in radio interviews and he's usually great, but he was a bit fumfumfuh yesterday on ABC. Jerome Bettis on ESPN this morning was excellent, and by comparison Michael Ervin is revealed again as a screaming mass of hamburger.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I consider Irvin to be the Flavor Flav of ESPN's NFL coverage. Meanwhile, Chris Berman is the Weird Al Yankovic.

did randy moss moon the crowd???

not quite

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

he made a mooning gesture without taking his pants off. the announcers apologized profusely.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Culpepper to Moss (again) for the TD, then Moss goes to the goalposts and pretends to pull down his pants and moon the crowd. Joe Buck's "That's disgusting" makes me think that Buck thought Moss was pretending to take a shit on the Frozen Tundra.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The announcers can stop apologizing for Randy Moss and his not-at-all-vulgar celebration dance (it looked like he was just rubbing his ass up against the goalpost like cats sometimes do to their scratching posts) any time now.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to suspect that they're simply running scared of the Fundies now.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHA... just as I'm contemplating the Fundie undercurrents of their programming, they cut to the Packers in a prayer circle.

Fuck FOX. Fuck them big time.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Remember kids, being angry and losing your temper on the field and shoving or hitting other players is OK. We at FOX are happy to show you 49739 instant replays of that and talk about the "intensity on the field". But being happy and pretending to moon the fans isn't OK, and we can't show you that anymore".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 January 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

ESPN declines to show the Moss mooning on NFL Primetime.

Moss after the game: "I was just enthused." Off-camera, reporters or players laugh at him.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

If the steelers don't make it (and I want them to, tho I have a sneaking suspicion that they'll fold) I'm gonna have a big Super Bowl party at my house, y'all are invited. If they do make it, well then this PGH guy I know is gonna like make a leg of lamb, let's all go over there.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Being a long time fan, I'd love to see the Colts blow the Pats out of the water. NE has had Indy's number forever.

The last three times they have met have about killed me. In week one, if Edge doesn't fumble on the one, they win. Last year in the AFC title game they played ugly, kept it close and the Pats got away with mugging the Colt recievers (especially Harrison). During last season, the Colts couldn't punch the ball in from the one yard with three tries at the end of the game. Tough losses, but the Colts are due. It used to be Tennessee that seemed to have the Colts number, but they got over that and have beaten them five straight, so I hope it is now NE turn.

I don't think the NFC is quite as wide open as the prognosticators are saying. Have you seen Atlanta play this year? I have and they are an ugly team to watch. Vick is an amazing athlete, but the guy turns the ball over three times a game and seems to come close to giving away a couple more times. I wouldn't be suprised if he eventually has a horrible game and breaks Roman Gabriel's fumble record for a game, which is seven. He is so sloppy protecting the ball, I really think it could happen. The Rams can't keep the ball and their D is only a bit better than the Viks, which is pretty bad. I think Philly even with out Owens will show up, McNabb is better than before and their defense is very good. Dante Culpepper is fun to watch play, that guy has a freaking cannon of an arm.

If the Colts don't win it all, I would not have a problem with the Steelers winning. It would bum me out the Colts lost, but Pitsburgh has great fans and i'd like to see The Bus get a ring. With all of the talk about Big Ben, Troy Palomalu is not getting the press. That guy freaking tough and might be the new Ronnie Lott, he even has the USC background.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not rooting against the Pats in honor of Chris V (but really I Want the Steelers to win the AFC).

Dante is THE MAN. Also the NFL seriously needs to get off of Randy's dick. "Grrr grrr we hate this talented black athlete who knows how talented he is and isn't afraid to show it! Why doesn't he know his place???" (This is also known as the Terrel Owens effect, only Terrel is a cock.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I fully expect the Eagles to lose to the Vikings. The Eagles haven't really played used their first-team offense in THREE WEEKS. They've established not even a whisp of a gameplan since Owens' injury.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

You have no idea how happy I will be if the Vikings take out the Eagles. I will run to Green Bay and pdeudo-moon them myself.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 January 2005 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Easy, Dan, I'm pretty sure I could throw 20/30 for 250 yards and 3 TD's against the Packers shitty defense.

This is probably a good time to mention that the Toronto boy has been a big Pats fan since 1993. GO PATS, MAKE PEYTON YOUR BITCH LIKE YOU DO EVERY YEAR.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 January 2005 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm kinda amazed the Vikes looked so tough today.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 10 January 2005 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Fox deserves to have the NFC title game being the 8-8 Vikings vs. the 8-8 Rams. By this point in the season, Troy Aikman is probably a whisper away from cracking Chris Collinsworth in the jaw. Theismann and Maguire for ESPN are very annoying, but they are nothing compared to the shrill voice that is Chris Collinsworth. I was a Bengal's fan in the 80s and I can't stand that guy.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 10 January 2005 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

This is also known as the Terrel Owens effect, only Terrel is a cock.

Owens is the smartest man in football, I swear...

that's what i used to say too jimmy but then i realized that he is, nevertheless, a cock.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 10 January 2005 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Owens is brilliant because he correctly pointed out that he had never been convicted or implicated in a crime and yet he is considrered a bad guy -- whereas Ray Lewis had been, and is somehow the league posterboy.

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Monday, 10 January 2005 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Testosterone rules, showmanship drools, Buck & Co. can ramalam it up their dingdongs if they're going to (like you fine folks mentioned) have the gall to talk about disgusting displays as employees of the network that brings you Who's Your Daddy, and then MAKE IT WORSE by talking about Moss' gesture all the live long day (which only exacerbates the problem, chumlies) (like, y'know, if you just unclenched & took your hands out of your pants, the problem would go away).

I am holding out hope that Paul McCartney, during his Super Bowl Halftime Bathroom Break, performs shirtless, wearing some nipple jewelry.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 10 January 2005 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

It's more than FOX, as William mentioned, ESPN was bitching at Moss on NFL Primetime. The NFL must have sent out a bulletin to all the networks.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 January 2005 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ray Lewis maybe have been implicated in a crime, but I'd rather hang out with him than an asshole like Owens.

Note I never said Owens was stupid or that he was wrong (in fact I think naming the Moss situation after him would be an explicit indicator that Owens is correct). I would much rather hang out with Moss because I think I could get along with him; I don't think I could get along with Owens. There is more than one flavor of primadonna at work here.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

the seattle-st. louis game featured the worst coaching i've ever seen in my life. yet holmgren and martz each got wet n wild rim jobs from madden and michaels. hot!

i too think minny will beat philly. of course minny is the perpetual cock tease, but then again so are the eagles, and randy has a way of getting fired up when the bullshit really starts to fly.

and yes atlanta wins ugly, but they win. their running game -- dunn and duckett, thunder and lightning! -- is top notch, and vick's big-play ability means they are almost a threat. the question is: can the defense continue to play well? i think so.

pittsburgh will have a tough time with the jets again, but the jets won't be able to score a td. pitt wins 17-9 or thereabouts.

new england will miss ty law, for sure, but they are in manning's head so deep that he'll self-destruct again (he really is brett farvrvrvrvre!). it's an ugly one: new england wins 24-13.

atlanta over minny in nfc championship game, pittsburgh over new england in the afc (24 more patriots'll get hurt next week), and pitt wins the super bowl.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

almost = always in reference to atlanta

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Moss seems like a great guy. We could smoke a bowl and play Madden.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost to Dan

I agree with that. Moss seems like a fairly mild-mannered person who sometimes gets excitable and does stupid or selfish things.

Owens seems like he's a freak 24/7.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

As a Pats fan, right now I'm more scared of playing Indy at home than playing Pittsburgh on the road. I'm not sure why that is.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

if you had ever been to the town that moss and jason williams come from, you'd love them even more. the fact that anything could come out of that shithole -- much less two professional athletes -- is INSANE

There was a story about Earl Campbell a few months ago on ESPN -- all those years of going through tacklers instead of around them had totally broken him down. He walks with two canes when he walks at all, can't sleep more than 2 hours at a time, etc. I think about that story when I look at Jerome Bettis. He's a monster now, but in 10 years he might not be able to move.

WOW! OVERTIME TRIFECTA!

Unless he makes something impressive in overtime, but yeah he's totally lost the plot.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

he looks good. great guy. One of the only Seminoles I actively root for. He seems to be running "downhill", as they say.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 16 January 2005 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i've had a crush on him ever since i was like 12 years old

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish Siragusa could pronounce his first name.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 January 2005 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

michael vick will. not. lose.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

heee-yah!! this is great.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Holt remembered how to catch the ball. I fucking hate Daryl Johnston. I hope Siragusa keeps calling him Warwick if it's irritating to Moose.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 16 January 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to hate people named Jim Mora. I guess some of 'em aren't so bad.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 January 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Marv Albert is doing the radio broadcast. He should be on the TV instead of Dick Stockton or Dick Enberg or Dick Shaft or Penis Engorged or any other multigenarian that passed their sell-by-date back when Dick Cheney had hair & total control of his body.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 16 January 2005 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

YESSSSSS!!!!!

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 January 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Aww, I actually love Enberg's "Oh my!!" He busted that one out a couple of times today.

It makes me feel all warm inside. Reminds me of when I was kid and he was paired up with Merlin Olson.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 16 January 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Enberg/Olsen -- man, that makes me feel old. But not as old as thinking about the Garagiola/Kubek baseball broadcasts I used to watch.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 January 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

how did the falcons score their latest td? fuckin ilx. set me straight here.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Vick pass to Price. Challenged unsucessfully by Martz.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 16 January 2005 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Do try to keep up, John.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 January 2005 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Enberg and don't really have a problem with Dick Stockton as both are better at play by play than Joe Buck or Jim Nantz.

The guy that needs to be on NFL tv broadcasts that is pretty good on the radio is John Riggins. I heard him doing a couple of games on AM last year and was impressed.

earlnash, Sunday, 16 January 2005 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

He's hilarious on Tony Kornheiser's radio show. His sense of humor is so black it's ultraviolet.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 January 2005 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Riggins is probably a bit too oddball for primetime TV, but he would be better on any of those Pre-football shows than some of these clowns they let on the air. Merrill Hoge? Sean Salisbury? C'mon these guys were not even that good as players.

earlnash, Sunday, 16 January 2005 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

you know you guys are being totally rockist or seomthing. this is a kickass game hav u ever heard of the MUTE button?? or NELLIE MCKAY AND PULP played at excessive levels to drown at out the commentary???

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I was SO hoping that Salisbury would take that job as the quarterbacks coach in AZ last year so he'd get off the air. His best work on TV was the season he cohosted that robot wars show. (xpost)

John, go breathe in daddy's face.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 January 2005 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The Falcons looked so awesome last night. I'm pretty excited about Colts/Pats later today. I guess I'll try to watch a bit of the Vikes/Iggles game as well.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 16 January 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Will we see Manning Meltdown II?

Or will the balance of the Patriots (7th Offense, 9th Defense) cancel the Colts' (2nd Offense, 29th Defense) "explosive" imbalance?

nader (nader), Sunday, 16 January 2005 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

That second Mitchell touchdown makes me think this game is gonna suck, even though that was a hilarious play. The Eagles are indeed looking better than last year, showing that TO is nice to have but this is still a Super Bowl contender without him. Sure looked like Pinkston looked at the defender again when he dropped that pass a couple of possessions ago. He needs to see a sports psychologist.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 16 January 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

So...Randy Moss, making lots of friends in Minny today.

WTF was he thinking?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 16 January 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

He's totally radioactive now.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 16 January 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY SHIT I FORGOT ALL ABOUT THE FUCKING GAME...motherfucking..dregs.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

This game appears to be over...everything's bouncing Philly's way.

The best game of the playoffs comes next. Go Colts.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 16 January 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

go eagles!!! (culpepper still scares me though) eagles defense brings a tear of joy to my eye.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 January 2005 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

manning is not going to meltdown guys.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, Manning is not gonna meltdown. Indy will win that game, no question about it. BTW, when I posted yesterday, NE was a solid two point favorite. Big money has been coming in on Indy, and now it's a pick 'em!

http://covers.usatoday.com/data/odds.aspx

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 16 January 2005 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, i'm not scared anymore. if culpepper can score 20 points in 6 minutes he deserves to go the super bowl.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 January 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Well that was impressive. If not very surprising. It's do or die for the Iggles now. They have to beat the Vickster next week. It should be a classic.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 16 January 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i disagree (eagles by 12+)

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I think you're right. Philly has a great great defense. Which apparently everyone forgot when they were bemoaning the fact that TO got injured.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 16 January 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

their offense aint so shabby either with westbrook in there. he leaves other people open.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

not like t.o. used to leave practically the whole team open, but still...

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus, the Patriots look great. Edgerrin James might as well be running on ice skates, as nimble as he looks in the grass.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Nope, Manning is not gonna meltdown. Indy will win that game, no question about it."

Once again underestimate the Patriots at your own peril. Jesus, what a fucking great team. They are stomping the shit out of Indy in every segment of the game.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

i was so wrong abt manning. still: streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetch the motherfucking field!

(heh xpost)

John (jdahlem), Monday, 17 January 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Well shut my mouth and call me sassafras. I guess I misread this one.

Still went 3-1 on the weekend. 6-2 in the playoffs so far. I'll put that record up against ANYONE.

New England is really something else. And for the record I don't DISLIKE them or anything. Brady is a Michigan guy so of course I'm a fan.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 17 January 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Dillon is a monster. Next week's game is going to be fantastic. I can literally not wait.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

yeah I'm happy for Corey Dillon. He deserves a taste of the good life after being so solid for so long, but buried in mediocrity over in Cincinnati.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 17 January 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

I still don't understand how so many people could pick Indy (who have never won shit) on the road against the two-time champs who have owned them for years.

Bellichick is Jesus.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 17 January 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

"I still don't understand how so many people could pick Indy (who have never won shit) on the road against the two-time champs who have owned them for years."

Because no offense (and this includes me cuz I FUCKIN' picked Indy) people are dumbasses who completely ignore all the evidence that the Patriots eat the Colts' lunch repeatedly. I wouldn't want to be Peyton for next year (yet again.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Boomer Esiason just called Peyton Manning this generation's Dan Marino because of his inability to win championships RIGHT IN FRONT OF DAN MARINO. He backpedalled by saying it was because of weak defenses but still. Holy shit.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 January 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

The CBS team is easily the shittiest. Marino's ego is too big, Sharpe yells too much, Esiason...well my last post covers him, and Gumbel? He's a Gumbel.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 January 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

Shocker: Balanced team beats unbalanced team.

nader (nader), Monday, 17 January 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

(of course "so many people" doesn't just mean ILXors, I'm talking about football fans and so-called experts in general)

The NFL practically ordained the Colts as the Chosen Team. In the extreme parity age, I guess they figure that any team can beat any other team, so they steer the publicity juggernaut to favour the better story. And in this case, the Offense That Cannot Be Stopped finally winning the big one presented a better story than the Pats winning their third SB in four years.

They never used to do this -- in the 90's, it was all about Dallas and SF being the best in the NFC and that's the game that everyone wanted to see when it counted. Elway used to get no respect because he'd never won a championship. Once he won, it became acceptable to call him one of the all-time greats. That's the sort of situation Manning is in right now -- great QB (and considered a 1st rate choker until he won his first playoff game only 12 months ago) who hasn't won anything, and yet people were lining up to hand him the SB MVP after the Denver game.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 17 January 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

Boomer Esiason just called Peyton Manning this generation's Dan Marino because of his inability to win championships RIGHT IN FRONT OF DAN MARINO.

HAHAHAHAHAHA.

And I can't feel bad for Marino here -- all season, he's been Manning's #1 fan, always going out of his way to compliment him, saying he's the best QB in the game, the answer to "which NFL QB would you want starting for you in the most important game of the year?", always picking the Colts to win ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 17 January 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Shannon Sharpe is fantastic (he almost makes crappy halftimes bearable.) If I was Boomer though I would get someone to test his food for a while though. It looked to me like Marino was itching to stick a shiv in Esiason's eye ("how many playoff games DID you win?")

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

Well, that sucked. But I dare say that the weather again played a huge part in a key Pats victory. The Colts can handle the cold, but the slow field conditions really hampered their offensive attack.

Guess I'll be rooting for a Falcons/Steelers Super Bowl.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

"But I dare say that the weather again played a huge part in a key Pats victory."

I know this is going to be the popular storyline out of this game, but I saw nothing in this game that indicated to me that if this game had been PLAYED anywhere else that the result would've been any different. The Patriots didn't just dominate them in one facet of the game. They creamed them at EVERY opportunity at virtually EVERY position in EVERY way from basically go. They outcoached them, they smothered them defensively at the line and also in the secondary, their offensive line pounded their defensive line, their runners sliced them up and their QB made adjustments and played a nearly flawless game. They could've playing in Indianapolis or in ideal weather conditions and while I'll concede that the score might have altered slightly, I have little doubt that the result would have been exactly the same. The Patriots--any time, any place--are the far far better team and their record against the Colts over the past four years speaks volumes to that. The only amusing thing is that as MIR pointed out so many fans (myself again included) and pundits and commentators seemed so willing to ignore the evidence in front of our eyes and predict a Colts' victory against all logic.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but remember the score was 6-3 at halftime. Not exactly a rout.

Both teams were struggling a bit.

Sure, it looks like the Pats SMOTHERED teh Colts defensively, but if your wide receiver corps is comprised of speedy guys -- guys who depend on getting a big jump off the line of scrimmage -- well, they ARE going to struggle in inclement weather. Sure it looked like Peyton didn't have anyone to throw to, the coverage was good, etc. .. but bottom line, a lot of that is due to the fact that the Indy receiving corps could never reach top speed. So yeah I'd say the weather was a factor. But I also don't take a single thing away from the Patriots: after all, they EARNED the right to play in that weather. If Indy doesn't like it, the answer is simple: win the freakin' home field advantage in the regular season next time...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

Not an original observation (have I ever made one?), but the Partiots are the New Jersey Devils of the NFL and they bore the shit out of me. I don't like the Steelers either (I've just generally always had an anti-AFC bias, perhaps because so many of the teams have shitty light-coloured uniforms and I used to hate Enberg and Olson's broadcasts back when NBC had the AFC games) but I hope they beat the Pats next week and then the Eagles rip the shit out of them in the Super Bowl.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

"So yeah I'd say the weather was a factor."

I'm not saying it wasn't a factor (I mean the score was 20-3--I'd like to assume that under better conditions both teams would have gotten closer to the over-under of 52-something!?!?!) What I am saying is that no matter what the weather was the result was most likely going to be the same. The Patriots have proved now time and time again that they are the better team. There is no convincing argument that the Colts even under ideal conditions would have been able to keep up with them (because ya know, they haven't.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

but the Partiots are the New Jersey Devils of the NFL and they bore the shit out of me

The Pats scored 437 points this year, 4th in the NFL (and 4th in the AFC). So they scored more than the Eagles, Packers, and Vikings -- teams that are routinely praised for playing an exciting, dynamic offensive game. The Ravens' SB-winning team were like the Devils of the NFL -- playing not to lose, capitalize on the other team's mistakes, get two big plays and win 13-7. The Pats have been handily beating their opponents all year by scores like 30-13.

Today, they focused on the running/time of possession game, took to the air less often than they normally do, and still scored 20 points. It could have been more, but they settled for FG's twice at the goal line. And they had, what, seven possessions for the whole game? That's damn good offensive efficiency.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 17 January 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

I don't like the Steelers either (I've just generally always had an anti-AFC bias, perhaps because so many of the teams have shitty light-coloured uniforms and I used to hate Enberg and Olson's broadcasts back when NBC had the AFC games) but I hope they beat the Pats next week and then the Eagles rip the shit out of them in the Super Bowl.

yay :-)

what IS with the eagles hate around here, anyway?!? did TO steal someone's wife or something?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 17 January 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i understand dan's dislike (he's from MN and went to harvard, so of course he'll root for the vikings and the patriots). i can understand blount's dislike (if he does indeed dislike them, i dunno), b/c they will go against the falcons next week. and i can understand the open hostility here in the NYC metro area (given the bitter, longstanding rivalry b/w the eagles and the giants). but everyone else -- OMGWTF?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 17 January 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

People who hate Terrell Owens hate fucking fun. How can you hate a guy who put a MARKER in his sock to sign his TD ball and then give it to his AGENT?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

Barry, you supported my point with one word: efficiency.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 January 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

Who exactly is saying they hate the Eagles? I haven't seen it. Here, or in the sports world as a whole. Seems to me a lot of people pity them for their lack of success in the championship games.

I'm not sure who to root for next week. God I love Vick. But I feel for Philly. That city needs a championship. BAD.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 17 January 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Hmm...just thought about what it is that bugs me about the Eagles, even though they're my team and have been for 25 years, and it's Andy Reid. It's his lack of emotion especially when they're down and have momentum against them. Hopefully that won't be a problem over the next three weeks. I do like to pretend that he's ordering up some take out when he has that play sheet over his mouth and he's talking into the headset, though.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 January 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

I like the Eagles, Eisbar! Only because of Rush Limbaugh, but still...

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Monday, 17 January 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

Actually fuck it, I'm officially rooting for Philly. Their window might be starting to close ... while Vick and the boys will be around for a while.

and McNabb is a Chicago guy, so I have to like him. i actually know a guy that went to high school with him.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 17 January 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

I actually think the Eagles' window could be open for years to come given McNabb's age and their cap situation, but please cheer for them anyway, Jim!

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

ok ok i was wrong y'all aren't iggles hataz :-) i just get a little antsy, sitting in the middle of eagles-hataz central and all ... plus since the jets are out of it, i gotta root for SOMEONE.

and this --

I do like to pretend that he's ordering up some take out when he has that play sheet over his mouth and he's talking into the headset, though.

andy reid = the rick wakeman of the NFL?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

Now if he's only wear capes.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

They creamed them at EVERY opportunity at virtually EVERY position in EVERY way from basically go.

The important thing to remember is that when the Colts played teams with strong, fast linebacking corps (Chargers, Ravens, Pats), the Colts struggled to score. It has nothing to do with the snow and wind and everything to do with Ray Lewis, Donnie Edwards, and Willie McGinest.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

He's was a bit of a slip there, eh? A big man he is.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

I'll give this much to the Colts... that play where Dwight Freeney spun twice and then bounced to the left and burst in on Brady was maybe the single most impressive defensive play I've seen this year, despite the fact that he didn't get there. I mean, I had no idea how athletic that guy is.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

McGinest is an absolute beast. No doubt about it.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

and how about Teddy Bruschi after the game? how pumped up was that guy?

Man. there is no player on my beloved Lions who cares that much. Sad but true.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

How can you deny Joey Harrington's passion? Haven't you heard him play piano? Dude has soul.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

i think that the colts-love was simple ... many wanted a falcons-colts bowl, upon the belief that the score would be something like 63-57 or something. kinda like those old san diego chargers teams w/ dan fouts, that could put up a gazillion points but had such a suck-ass defense that they'd also give up a gazillion points. this is "interesting" and "fun" and "high ratings" football (in the minds of network executives and certain NFL officials, presumably).

not to be smug and no hatred intended towards the colts, but their elimination makes this a bit less likely (a GOOD thing, IMHO).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

The Colts defense played pretty well today, I thought.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

I have heard Joey tickle the ivories!!

Backing up, um, Blues Traveler or some shit like that. Dude get DOWN.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

People who hate Terrell Owens hate fucking fun.

Thank you Alex.

I am trying to find a way to speak in hand signals like Peyton Manning; y'know. In every day life. I know all the ones that we film people use, but I need stuff that I can use while changing my order at the Deli.

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Monday, 17 January 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

yeah the colts d (read: freeney) looked pretty good today, held two LONG drives to field goals: not bad. i went to the falcons game yesterday, ten yard line, six rows from the field, MOST FUN OF MY LIFE MAYBE. i like our chances against the eagles. pats over steelers, i like cowher but you don't ignore history (i learned this the hard way last week with the chargers). i don't know yet who wins the super bowl but if the spread's crazy, plus eight and a half say, i'm taking the nfc. ESP since it'll be either the pats or the steelers in there. i've been skeptical of the "huge gulf of quality between the afc and nfc" storyline baited about this season. i can't decide who's more full of shit: blowhards ready to proclaim peyton manning the new jesus before today's game (my fave moment of moongate besides the "straight cash homey" dialogue: chris berman lambasting moss as classless and then seguing by going 'and now we go from a guy with no class (moss) to a guy who's all class' and he's talking about PEYTON MANNING, apparently faking a moon when you're black vacuums your class away whereas getting your school sued cuz you rubbed a trainers face into your nude ass when you're a white guy makes you as classy as ted dibiase. who knew the human ass was so powerful and mysterious in its judgments?*) vs. blowhards dismissing as "just" another dan marino (WTF) today. yeah you take trent dilfer and brad johnson and i'll take dan fouts and fran tarkenton no problem. anyhow pats over steelers, falcons over eagles, FALCONS OVER PATS O YEAH YOU HEARD ME WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

* except sir mix-a-lot

Haha when the blowhard is DISMISSING him as another Marino in front of MARINO I give full props to the blowhard! It almost made me like Boomer haha, but not quite.

yeah that really is incredibly fucking funny as hell (i'm not quite as impressed with manning's td record as some - lots of 3 yd td passes it seemed like to me - but it was fun to see marino have to talk about it or, better yet, sit there while others talked about it in front of him), i can only imagine boomer's combination of arrogance and stupidity made him forgetful for a sec there (when you're boomber esiason it can be tough to remember anyone else is in the room), or maybe he's just still feeling the effects of ptsd from randy moss last week.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

Haha me and my dad turned to each other and just cracked the fuck up. I mean fuck you have to see this guy every week Boomer haha dontchya think you might want to show a little discretion!?!? I loved Marino's off camera dig too "How many playoff games did you win?" haha. But really Marino wasn't as good as Montana and Manning isn't as good as Brady (even though each might have been/be the second best QBs of their eras) and I like that Marino (who's always come off as a jerk to me) constantly gets reminded of it. I wish it would happen more in basketball and Russell would get the credit he truly deserves, but I guess it's easy to console yourself when you've got ELEVEN rings haha.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

are there any hall-of-fame qbs who were/are worth a damn (minimum requirement: kept me awake. michael irvin and shannon sharpe i'm willing to grant 'worth a damn' status to) in the broadcast booth? blocks of wood, some of them wobbly (joe montana).

note: dandy don meredith is not a hall-of-famer (neither is ron jaworski)(or haha boomer esiason).

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

Kenny Stabler is fucking god in the booth, but he's been consistently gypped out of the HOF.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

And I don't even know if he's doing games anymore. No fucking justice.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

I hope Irvin makes it to the hall. Those Cowboys teams are consistently underrated even though for that four year stretch they were amazing as hell (Aikman also gets no fucking credit which is bullshit.) Shannon Sharpe is my current favorite talking head though. He cracks me up (he was hysterical as a player too and damn if he didn't back it up--we were looking over his records today, he's fucking decimated every tight-end reception record ever. . . you've got a long way to go Tony Gonzalez.) People complaining about him being too "loud" are completely missing the point.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah the pro football hall of fame's odd, when i was a kid 'there are NO tight ends in the hall of fame wtf' was one of my fallback sports rants in talking with my grandfather, and considering some of the people who aren't in you can vaguely begin to understand why people bitch about lynn swann or franco harris being in there. it's crazy to think that someone like irvin isn't a first ballot lock. i like when they announce the inductees cuz there's always one guy you can't believe is just now going in (eg. hank stram). the basketball hall of fame's even crazier.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 January 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

"yeah the pro football hall of fame's odd"

Well the entire voting system is just fucked and there is no transparency and zero accountability. I think it's weird that Art Monk isn't in there, but really as much as I like Monk he really wasn't as great a receiver as Irvin (or Rice or probably even Owens now.) The craziest thing about this years vote though is CHARLES "SIX FUCKING SUPER BOWL RINGS ALL TIME SACK LEADER AND AN ABSOLUTE FUCKING MONSTER OF A LINEMEN AND THE PROTOTYPE FOR EVERY JEVON KEARSE/JASON TAYLOR/ETC" HALEY didn't even make it to the top 15!!! Are people who vote on fucking crack?!!?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

i've been skeptical of the "huge gulf of quality between the afc and nfc" storyline baited about this season.
The AFC was 44-20 vs the NFC this year.

Is Phil Simms in the football hall of fame? I like him in the booth.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 17 January 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah i know the afc's record against the nfc this year! i'm just saying if, o, the jets and the rams were to play head-to-head for instance the jets maybe don't blow them out. cf. the superbowl this year - belee dat! simms is nowhere near the hof, if the pro football hof were like the baseball hof (which i would prefer)(not that i don't have problems with the baseball hof but it seems the sanest of the bunch somehow) he'd be in or stand a good shot, with the pfhof wait til 2022 or so who knows.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 January 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

note: simms nowhere near hof in terms of vote getting, not in terms of my opinion of him (hell i'd put jaworski in)(not boomer though).

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 January 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

Actually I'm mistaken. Haley had five rings and a lot less sacks than I thought, but still I think he's the only guy with five rings and he was integral to every one of those teams.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

Blount, I don't get it ... a 64 game sample is pretty significant ... the AFC's best did very well against the NFC, and the NFC's best did poorly against the AFC ... I assume you're saying "NFC's best vs AFC's best" is more of a fair fight*, but that wouldn't show which conference as a whole is stronger. Ten years ago, it was generally accepted that the NFC was more dominant by exactly these sorts of arguments, plus, they had the SB dominance to prove it.

*also very contentious, i.e. Indy beat Green Bay and Minnesota, Pittsburgh KILLED Philly (who were undefeated at the time), NE beat St. Louis and Seattle, etc.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

o i'm not saying the nfc's better than the afc, just that i'm skeptical of how much of a gulf there is between the two conferences. maybe i'm just spinning an old variation on the 'parity' spiel, but if the afc team is a huge favorite, gimme the nfc and the points. i will possibly look back on this post in a few weeks with disgust/bemusement. OR I WILL BE READING IT FROM A JACUZZI - TIME WILL TELL!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Haha. Well, if Philly makes it, then I can't see the spread being any more than 5-7 points, since everyone's been saying for weeks that the Steelers, Pats and Eagles are on a different tier than the rest. I can see the Falcons not getting much respect from Vegas, though, but I think the days of 14-point SB spreads are over in today's NFL.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

yeah, eight points at most probably.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

hey i love football .. just getting caught up here :

are there any hall-of-fame qbs who were/are worth a damn (minimum requirement: kept me awake. michael irvin and shannon sharpe i'm willing to grant 'worth a damn' status to) in the broadcast booth?

Steve Young!! He's doing that crap for ESPN/ABC; he's not in now, but he will be in for sure.

it's crazy to think that someone like irvin isn't a first ballot lock.

not so sure about this one ... what's the case? He was a push off artist with an incredible supporting cast.

eg. hank stram

after halftime of the Pats/Colts game .. Jim Nantz said, "the teams are now MATRICULATING back onto the field"!!!! HAHAHAH. best moment of the weekend

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

"what IS with the eagles hate around here, anyway?!?"

Hey! I've been a fan for years. And as a long-time philly resident i had more then my share of heartbreak with all of philly's teams. i did finally give up a little on the phils. i just got so sick of watching them. although i do end up rooting for people like terry francona and curt schilling after they escape. (if the eagles lose i'll still be rooting for duce if the steelers make it.) and it was kinda nice to move to massachusetts and have the super bowl and world series wins right off the bat! (this was nice cuz now i don't feel as though my being in a town actually prevents a team from winning.) i am an official A.I. hater though after rooting for him for years. And cheers to larry brown for all your post-A.I. success!

But, um, like I said before: Go Eagles!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 17 January 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday was not a good day. The Pats defense was amazing. The Colts couldn't get one long pass play going all day and they couldn't run. Put that with an offense that doesn't let the Colts on the field...Fugly. I can't get down on the defense, they held the Pats to 20 points, which should be enough for them to win. The Colts should have gone no huddle like they did towards the end of the 2nd quarter for the rest of the game. After failing to establish the running game, they needed to open things up and not give the Pats time to set up on defense. Oh well...maybe next year.

I think an Eagles/Steelers superbowl would be a classic matchup. It is just as possible to be any combination of the teams, as I don't think there any mismatches in the NFC/AFC Championship games.

"it's crazy to think that someone like irvin isn't a first ballot lock.

not so sure about this one ... what's the case? He was a push off artist with an incredible supporting cast."

Irvin like a few other Cowboys of that time also had quite a few run-ins with the law off the field. It is a bit suprising that he was able to get a TV gig. I used to hate the guy, but that segment on Sportscenter with him and Mike Ditka is often pretty funny.

Irvin's stats are a bit padded in comparison to Monk, as the passing stats blew up big time in the 90s. When Monk caught over 100 passes in the mid 80s, it was very much an anomaly, not the norm. Irvin's career best of 111 was only one of nine players to do so that year and he didn't lead the league. Irvin had more speed than Monk, but Monk was glue on those Washington teams in the 80s. I'd say both players should get int the HOF.

earlnash, Monday, 17 January 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh, man, the New England media is a treat right now. Last night there was pretty much nothing else on the local news but the sports guy outside of Foxboro going: "Three points! We smashed them! Smashed them!" Today on the radio: "Bring it aaahn, Steelaahhs! Heinz Field! We own ya Ben!"

Monk was indeed holding the Skins together, especially since there was a revolving door on the QB spot all those years. I suppose I ought to hate Philly but I can't muster up the same hate as I have for Dallas, who somehow manage to PWN the Redskins consistently no matter how bad a team they have.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 17 January 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

That reminds me of the baseball commentator impersonations thread on ILB.

I like how "the rules of football" = "technicalities" in this guy's world.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 17 January 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

It's crazy. I mean I like Favre (it is not to like Favre esp. after his bit in There's Something About Mary--perhaps the most wooden celebrity cameo ever. . . he certain wasn't watching from Kareem's brilliant turn in Airplane! or even the Juice in the Naked Gun films there haha) but to pretend that he some sort of unique character in the pantheon of football stars is just ludicrous (if not quasi-racist.) The cult of personality that these morons have manufactured around him is just freakin' insane. Why do I have a feeling Brady even if he wins FIVE Super Bowls (he's already got one more Favre) won't be getting freaked out about like this in X years time.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 17 January 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Appearantly many of these talking heads haven't seen how Favre has done in the playoffs the past five or six years. Criminy all by his lonesome he has cost the Packers at least two of those games by doing those dumb loco toss into triple coverage passes, which he has done ever since he started in the league. Gunslinger whatever... Favre is a great one, but not as great as some of these folks want to believe.

At least at this point, Brady deserves points as he is the opposite of Favre in crucial situations. Brady takes what he can get, rarely makes a mistake, which in many ways is the best way to play the position. If Favre would have been the QB for those NE teams in the Superbowl, he probably would have tried to win the game on his own by being a gunslinger instead of making a bunch of small tosses and working them into field goal range. I'm not saying Favre isn't a clutch QB, he has been great at times, but the guy makes some really, really DUMB decisions and seems to free pass on them.

earlnash, Monday, 17 January 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm a lifelong Packers fan -- I attended the 97 Super Bowl in New Orleans -- and I'm a huge Favre fan. But you are absolutely right, Favre makes terrible decisions with increasing frequency. He's among the top 20 QBs of all time in my eyes, MAYBE top 10 if I'm feeling giddy, but the canonization process has become embarrassing in every respect, and yeah it feels more than a little bit racist as well.

The Pack offense would be killer if they'd focus on Green/Davenport, and then Favre throws down the field as a change of pace. Like the first game of the season against Carolina -- they just trampled the Panthers on the ground, and I thought shit, these fuckers are going to the Super Bowl this year, b/c Favre isn't just hucking the ball at will. Ah well, turned out they needed a defense too -- who knew?

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

falcons-patriots super bowl is my call. i picked against philly this past week (my bad!) but i didn't see anything that convinced me that my feelings on them are wrong. i can't really foresee dunn having a huge game against the eagles -- has he ever played well against physical defenses, even going back to his fsu days??? -- but the three-prong vick, dunn, duckett attack should wear out philly's front four, especially with the atl o-line chop-blocking till the sun goes down.

i keep seeing the commentators say that vick needs to be a better passer to be a true superstar. but, hello?? he wins anyway, so why make a big deal about it! his arm is inconsistent, but still, he's thrown the most beautiful ball i've ever seen in my life: his freshman year at vt in a game against some big east pushover, he throws the ball from his own 30 and it fucking sails for 60 YARDS IN THE AIR before landing perfectly in earnest wilford's hands. i was at the game, sitting halfway up the bleachers, and the ball was fucking eye-level with me before dropping beautifully. i almost cried. and think back to the fsu national championship game, and how well he played when he was overmatched. when the man is determined -- and lemme tell ya, after that injury last year he is now -- he can do whatever the fuck he wants on field. but yeah it's not just vick's team blah blah blah. and that's true. dunn deserves prop. fucking crumpler deserves props (this morning sean salisbury said that the eagles had the edge in the game cuz chad lewis and lj smith are better te's -- WTF???). kearney deserves props. and my boy deangelo hall deserves props! (look for him to come up big in the philly game.)

in the afc, pittsburgh is gonna lose, but what a fucking amazing game it's gonna be. john madden's gonna suck his own dick watching this one.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

dude it's gonna be straight tampa-philly 2000 shit. atl will be lucky to get in the fucking endzone more than once.

i wish madden would have a heart attack already. no that's mean, he seems like a decent guy. maybe just a stroke or something that would force him into retirement but leave him fully functional otherwise.

I am dying that there's someone out there nicknamed "QUADZILLA"! This has made my day.

10 or so years ago, Higley's Coffee Shop in La Canada (near Pasadena) had a four-espresso-shot drink called a Quadzilla.

Gator Magoon (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

during the game on saturday the announcers mentioned that pittsburgh kicker josh brown's nickname was QUADZILLA cuz of his huge thighs. to my friends and i (and i should admit now that was after two joints) the likelihood that someone not named JOSH BROWN would choose to name the kicker fucking QUADZILLA was near-impossible. i just now tried to write out some of the scenarios we envisioned but, uh, unsurprisingly you had to be there.

HEY GOOGLE: Paul McCartney nipple rings.

Did any pundits lay blame on Randy for that SNAFU w/ the fake field goal when it was an extra lineman's fault (from what I heard)?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

duckett got several carries, he scored the 'fuck you mike martz' td towards the end. yance i hope hall comes up big cuz he was lacking last week, the rams were picking on him like crazy early, going to curtis, bruce's backup, again and again and then flipping it to holt whenever hall covered him. alot of that wasn't his fault - the falcons were getting NO pressure on bulger at first - but still. i suspect/hope he'll come thru though, he's talented as hell, fast. vick has the best arm left in the playoffs, he's got the worst wide receivers too (and that's not counting t.o. towards the eagles).

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

"best left arm", yes. otherwise, "Accuracy".

potential best arm /= best arm arm.

he is too erratic.

"Did any pundits lay blame on Randy for that SNAFU w/ the fake field goal when it was an extra lineman's fault (from what I heard)?"

I haven't heard anyone blame him. Most of the fault seems to be laid at the horrid Minnesota coaching/communication.

I like Mike Tice, he seems like a good guy--I believe he is Peter Bagge's brother-in-law--but he just shouldn't be coaching a professional football team (OTOH there are a lot of guys coaching at the NFL level *cough* Tom Coughlin *cough* who probably shouldn't be coaching period though.)

Crazier than the fake field goal was the going-for-it-on-4th-and-22, to this observer anyway. I mean, just kicking the freakin' field goal or punt. Who in their right mind goes for it on 4th and 22?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

The wind in Philly is going to shrink the playbook quite a bit, and T. Owens would have been less of a factor even if he was healthy. I really think the pressure to win after three straight years of tripping over the last hurdle is going to get up in the Iggles' heads. On the other side, Atlanta's not in their cozy dome. I think it's going to be close and low-scoring. If I were a betting man, I'd take Atlanta +5 and I'd put big money on the under (the O/U is 37). Don't ask me to pick a winner, but I don't think the Eagles will cover.

The field is going to be SLOP in Pittsburgh. I think the Steelers are going to win outright and another low scoring game. (O/U = 34.5)

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 23 January 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, that line opened to small and big money came in on the Eagles. I was inclined to follow the money flow. Philly is a team of destiny, the defense is too good, it's cold ... they can't be denied.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

where were the falcons today?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

they weren't in philly.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

That little dance that the Eagles' recievers were doing on the sidelines is the gayest thing I've ever seen at a football game...

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh, that was a cold gatorade bath. Ooof.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

WOW! That felt good. I've only been an Eagles fan for about 15 years, but it felt like a lifetime to get to this point.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Nice win by the Eagles. This was basically Bill Simmons' "worst case scenario" for the Falcons -- Eagles jump out to a lead, Vick gets knocked all over the place, they running game goes nowhere, they have to rely on their non-existant passing game to try to catch up, thanks for showing up.

It'll be Pats 38, Eagles 21 in the Superbowl, but Philly had a good run.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

a lot of (giant-lovin') mofos at work (in manhattan) will be eating a PLATEFUL OF SHIT tomorrow morning!!

WHERE'S YANCEY?!?!?!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHAHA.

No, I'd say the 2nd gayest thing is Ray Lewis' dance.

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

i'm picking patriots, incidentally.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Brian Dawkins is my lord and personal savior.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

i'm not picking anybody, but i'd prefer the steelers. should be a great game no matter what.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Andy Reid just said that T.O. will be playing. In case ya missed it.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

im in tears. i saw the fireworks at the linc from my deck. life is beautiful.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

i have to root for the steelers cuz i always root for DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCE!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

i'm really not so disappointed, first year with this coach, this gm: this team will get alot better. i'll take pats but i'm rooting for steelers.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

turf teams need to practice on grass more often.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Brian Dawkins was pretty inspiring, wasn't he?

He is right about their defense too. Way underrated by all the people hand-wriging over Owens being injured.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

God how I loathe the Patriots.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

So much for that game...

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Yikes. Bad throw by Ben.

fuck...

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

OK, can someone give me one goddamned team that can stop the Pats? Unfuckingreal.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Some people on this thread be terrible prognosticators.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Steelers are reminding me of the John Shoop-era Bears right now. Ugh.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

I was 7-2 coming into this game. And I actually initially picked the Pats. But then I woke up this morning and panicked and had visions of a Brady meltdown. So I changed over to the Steelers side. Silly me.

But, it's early.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

um, i later changed my prognostication to the patriots (on another thread). b/c the patriots are RoboTeam -- they just form like voltron, and do what they have to do to win.

then again, this game isn't over.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

I was 6-3 and I ain't picking against the Pats until they burn me.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

No, it's over.

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Rookie QB in playoffs = death

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Let's see just how many predictions I can get wrong. Batting a thousand so far!

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah now I'd say this game is OFFICIALLY over. Whoever had visions of Brady choking clearly misread the team colors, logo and the back of the jersey of the QB.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Well, except that rookie QB has already won a game in the playoffs.

But yeah, i'm an idiot.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

This is like watching the 1998 Yankees bitchslapping the Padres. Fuck this shit.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Eagles vs. Pats is gonna be really really fun. Lots of drama with the 90's Cowboys' comparisons and the Owens' comeback. I'm quite excited.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

it ain't over 'til it's over, but sheesh.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Well, except that rookie QB has already won a game in the playoffs.

That was won more in spite of him. Edwards and Brien won that game for the Steelers.

Brady isn't gonna melt down. You have to play better than him to win. McNabb can certainly do it.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

jesus christ, this is getting ugly

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

It started ugly, it continued ugly and it's probably gonna finish ugly. Oh well Roethlisberger's young, but he's gonna have learn to have better field vision if he wants to win these games. Two terrible interceptions for TDs, two weeks in a row is ugugugugly.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

man i might have to take back my 'gimme the nfc and the points' blather above

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

There's no way the spread will be more than seven for the SB. The Eagles looked great today.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

"There's no way the spread will be more than seven for the SB."

I'm not so sure. Respect for the Patriots is gonna be at an all time high.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 January 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I figure New England opens a 3 or a 4.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 24 January 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

dare me to wear my eagles jersey down to the local drunk-tank here on martha's vineyard on superbowl sunday? those cod-fisherman can be mean in the winter.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 24 January 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

dude, scott, don't let your baby grow up daddy-less.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

ha! I forgot for a moment yer in Pats country, Scott. that should make things interesting.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 24 January 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

I don't know. I've got a weird feeling that the Eagles will be a trendy pick with Owens back; people sure seemed to like the Colts and the Steelers these last two games.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 24 January 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

Scott -- I used to wear a Bills jersey as a kid. I lived in Foxboro, too.

Remy (x Jeremy), Monday, 24 January 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Bettors always love a returning Super Bowl champ though.

Remember how big a favorite Green Bay was against Denver? That spread was ridiculous. I think Green Bay was like a 12 or something!

Or... remember how big a favorite the Rams were against these very same Patriots? I guess nobody though Bill Bellichick was such a "genius" when they were busy going to the window pounding the Rams....

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 24 January 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

the Eagles will be a trendy pick with Owens back

This isn't definite, though.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

andy reid said he was gonna play!!! andy never lies. it's against the book of joseph to lie!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 24 January 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

This is becoming worrisome.

And Givens caught that ball.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

Going for that field goal was totally gutless. That one might come back to haunt Cowher.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

always go for it in the 4th! but never any other time.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

Even with 13 minutes left, absolutely. In the AFC championship, at home, on a fourth-and-two? The touchdown-two point conversion-field goal scenario is somewhat improbable; now the Patriots have kicked a field goal again and they're right back where they started.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

Except minus 5+ minutes.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

game over.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

All the Patriots fellatio in New England is a bit much for me, but of this I have no doubt: Bill Belichick never would have kicked that field goal.

xpost - And now Roethlisberger throws an interception, pending review.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Those were two of the toughest reviews I've ever seen. Honestly I'm not sure if either one was the right call (but the first one seemed to at least have more angles. . . none of the three on the interception looked remotely conclusive.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

I will never predict a football game again.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit, that end-around. The Patriots are playing flawlessly.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

man fuck a new england. i really hate seeing the same teams win all the time. and people complain about parity!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

Man the over-under fucking sucked this week didn't it haha

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

I guess the story tomorrow will be the 4th and 2, but I don't think it's as clear-cut as the rest of you are saying. There's a whole quarter of football left, you're dominating the time of possession and yardage in the half, there's plenty of time to get a few more possessions.

If you don't score, and the Pats put together the same drive that they ended up with, then the same five minutes go off the clock and it's still a 14-point deficit.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 24 January 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

Going for the field goal is not why the Steelers lost, they just made too many big mistakes on both offense and defense. Those two early turnovers and giving up that bomb put Pittsburgh too far in the hole early in the game.

I think the Eagles could beat the Pats, but they will have to play flawless and force NE to make a couple of mistakes. I like the fact that McNabb doesn't throw a bunch of picks and he can run, this is something that I don't think NE has really faced in an opponent. I still don't like the Eagles chances, but I will be pulling for them this time.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

ESPN reported ("just for entertainment purposes only, chuckle chuckle nudge nudge wink wink") the early line is Pats -6.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

The over-under is gonna be in the fifties I swear.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

Patriots=Voltron force comment is DEAD FUCKING ON.

I'm not crazy about them but all they do is win.

I'm calling Patriots over Eagles, let's say: 27-17

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

we oughta have an ILX super bowl pool. That'd be fun as hell.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 24 January 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

IT'S TODAY!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't buy the "patriots as voltron" thing at all. Yeah, they're coached well, but they have some truly gifted players (Brady, Dillon, Seymour, Bruschi, etc.) who would excel in any system, and are not exactly anonymous either.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 6 February 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm taking the Eagles.

Fuck it, I think they can cover that 7 with ease. Moreover I think they can win this thing. Yes, I am betting against the Pats AGAIN. You would think that I would learn. I have a 7-3 playoff record ATS, and two of those losses came against the Pats. Plus, two weeks ago I initially pick the Pats, then panicked and backtracked and took the Steelers.

But, I'm picking the Pats because as I said, Vegas falls in love with returning Super Bowl champs. 7 is too high. Just like last year, when nobody gave the Panthers a chance ... well, what happened? They covered. And almost won the damn thing. And I think the Eagles might just win today.

Player-for-player, talent-for-talent, and yes, I really think: coaching-for-coaching, the EAGLES are every bit as strong as the Patriots. The only thing that worries me is the mental factor. I am a bit concerned that, in the back of their mind, the Eagles are happy to have just finally gotten over the hump, and reached the Super Bowl. The Patriots have an undeniable, well-deserved swagger. They are an intimidating bunch, there is no doubt about it. But I am hoping the Eagles won't be cowed. I think Scott Seward will end the night a very happy man. And the people of Chicago will be happy! We love Donovan! We are all rooting for the product of Mount Carmel.

also, Bill Clinton agrees with me!! Did you hear him just now? That seals it. Never bet against Bill. He said "... I think the oddsmakers have made a mistake". Or something like that, I'm paraphrasing. Anyway, he praised the Eagles D and basically said they will cover. Who knew Bill was a gambling man??

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 6 February 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

But, I'm picking the Pats because as I said

er, should say EAGLES of course

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 6 February 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

also, Bill looks REALLY frail. shit, I hope that dude's alright..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 6 February 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm praying. I really am. I'm nervous, man. I would love nothing more than to see the Eagles D put a lock on Brady. They have to be perfect today.

Wow. When that black lab and the golden retriever went at it over that little chew toy, it was more dramatic and interesting than the first two hours of this football game.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

puppy bowl seems to be a bunch of puppies in a fake football field and a bunch of toys and they bark at eachother once in a while! also there is smoothjazz playing!

The Patriots' play-calling is a lot sharper at this point than it was in the first half. This is probably the most important possession of the game from Philly's standpoint; I wonder if they're going to let McNabb take a lot of chances.

Pats-to-cover seemed like such easy money that I talked myself out of it.

Aaron A., Monday, 7 February 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, don't remind me. Every time I think about betting on the Patriots, I convince myself that they're bound to lose eventually.

Insane catch by Owens there. Can't believe Philly's still alive.

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

I keep expecting Andy Reid to rip off his headset and clobber Donovan McNabb with a steel chair and spray-paint "NWO" on his chest. What the hell is he doing? He could be out-coached by one of the Puppy Bowl puppy wranglers, apparently.

xpost - This is a THREE-POINT GAME. If Philly had a remotely capable coach and if McNabb weren't trembling every time he touches the ball like he was auditioning for "American Idol," they very well could be winning right now.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

umm McNabb deserves at least as much shit for screwing so much up royally. (xpost)

so who's gonna get MVP then?

...

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Owens was so good in that game. It's a shame that the Eagles couldn't have won, because he was the best player on the field by a mile.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

they looked fucking tired out there towards the end. soooooo sloooooooow. agonizing. i can't even bring myself to hate the patriots. they played a good game and they weren't doing much of anything for 3 quarters. it was the eagle's game to win. i go back to the end of the 2nd quarter. eagles get the ball back with 4 or 5 minutes left and they cough it right up again and the pats score 7. they hold on to the ball and they blank the champions for half a football game. coulda changed things.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Branch wins MVP, sez CNN.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

Owens is maybe the best player on any field at any time (well except for Brady. . . besides that weird ass fumble guy played another near perfect game--McNabb might want to bone up on playing under presha.) My hats off to him.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

o plz owens is better than brady, new joe montana my ass

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah he probably is, but being a great QB is more important that being a great receiver which is why Brady has the ring and Owens is getting a cup of Campbell's Chunky Soup from Donovan's mom.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 7 February 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

Were you guys watching the same game I was? I saw the Pats defense badly outplay the Eagles offense, Brady badly outplay McNabb, and the Pats running game badly outplay the Eagles running game. What's left?

It shouldn't have been that close. The Pats uncharacteristically lost the ball once inside the 10, and had to settle for a FG when they had first and goal from the three. They should have had another seven or ten points. The only reason the game was close was because the Philly receivers kept bailing out McNabb by somehow reigning in sloppy/risky throw after sloppy/risky throw.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 7 February 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

I called it back on the 17th of January. They're calling plays in to McNabb. There was no sense of urgency IMO amongst the coaching staff, and Andy Reid has to take the blame for that. McNabb will win one eventually...I guess they need to learn the hard way.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 7 February 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

So, who bet against the Pats again?
-- daria g (daria_gra...), February 7th, 2005 9:44 PM.

um, yeah Daria, I did .. as JB said .. to NOT cover the spread. Which they didn't.

Still, it feels ... what's the term? Phyrric victory? No, that's not the correct metaphor. HOLLOW victory i guess. I really, really wanted the Eagles to win. I feel for the people of the great city of Philadelphia, I really do. Some of the best people I've ever met are from Philly. Still ... the city seems cursed. I'm also a McNabb fan. I never never in a million years would have thought that the reason the Eagles would lose would be due to poor play by McNabb. Frankly, he was awful.

As others mentioned upthread -- I have never seen a more putrid two-minute offense. What in god's name were the Eagles DOING out there on those last two drives? It's like they were having a card game in between plays or something. I've never seen such an appalling lack of urgency in such a high stakes situation. Geez. such unpreparedness. Maybe Andy Reid ISN'T all that. And maybe, yeah, Belichick really IS a genius. Shit, who knows. The Patriots really are something, though.

Oh well. Props to TO on a great, great performance. You have to respect that guy.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

oh and Sir Paul was fun. I liked his performance.

I would like to see the Patriots blow someone out in the super bowl.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 7 February 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

I never never in a million years would have thought that the reason the Eagles would lose would be due to poor play by McNabb.

Why? They lost three NFC title games in large part due to crappy playing by McNabb.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 7 February 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

meh. I guess so. he was hot though, coming in to this one.

anyway, I went 8-3. what's your record tough guy?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

I think everyone went 8-3. I went 8-3. My friends all went 8-3. My dog went 8-3.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

One of the ones I missed though (the Patriot/Indy game) makes me hate my record. And I was kind of rooting for the Eagles, but in my heart I knew it weren't to be.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

8-3 AGAINST THE SPREAD. that's, um, kind of the key point

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

anyway, I am happy for Tom Brady. God bless him. I still don't think he's really that great of a quarterback!! But, what can I say, results are results. Dude is just a phenomenon. He really is. I have this female friend -- she's pretty much my best friend, we've been very very close since we were about 14 years old -- and she HATES sports. She's not into it at all. She also lives in Boston. She think Brady is HOTT. She's a big fan. The guy has big appeal. As well he should!! he's a really nice guy. And as a Michigander and a Wolverine fan, well .. as much as I was rooting for Philly tonite .. I am definitely happy for Tom.

Tom will probably be in the hall of fame now. Incredible. Unthinkable, for those of us who are devoted to Michigan football. But good for him. I'm happy for him.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

god I really love Alex's bad-assitude tho, rereading that post.

Like his fucking DOG could go 8-3 AGAINST THE SPREAD. Seriously Alex, how fucking thick are you? You think I would come on here and boast about picking straight-up winners? Do you have any fukcing idea how hard it is to win consistently against the spread? that's the whole fucking point. jackass

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

and yeah, i know, I sound like a jackass even saying that. but dude I know what it is like to write a check for a dime to a bookie. It hurts. It hurts really, really bad. But this year, for once, I kicked some serious ass. and I'm gonna go get myself a steak this week.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

diamond when you say write a check for a dime do you literally mean write a check for ten cents?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

haha sorry i'm just loving that image - "that's a roosevelt i coulda used this week man". anyhow i gotta friend who's been on some crazy streak gambling lately, winning parleys left and right, you'd think i'd maybe just copy him or at least take some advice but instead i go it on my own and follow such instincts as "schottenheimer's due". cuh-rist.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

james ... you card you! i LITERALLY mean i have actually lived through the very PAINFUL experience of writing out a check for TEN BUCKS to "my guy". Let's put it that way.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

anyway, I went 8-3. what's your record tough guy?

I wasn't gambling on the games, but if I had been (i.e. going with what my choices were at the time), I would have gone 6-5.

I think one's 8-3 gambling record is *slightly* compromised when one bets three times against the eventual champs :)

(yeah, I know the Pats didn't cover)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 7 February 2005 08:05 (twenty years ago)

Michigan football is weird thing. Big-time college programs in general are a weird thing. I mean, you wouldn't BELIEVE the kind of abuse Brady came in for when he was there. heck, you wouldn't believe the kind of abuse Brian Griese came in for when he was there! And he ended up winning a national championship!! It's unreal.

There is SO SO much pressure on these kids. I can't even imagine. College football is WAY more insane than the NFL. Like, you think any BiG-TIME College program would put up with that bullshit two-minute drill that the Eagles displayed tonite?? No way!! Andy Reid would be out on his ass tomorroW!!!

IT's insane, though. College sports are insane. How about that John Navarre kid? Nice guy, did the best he could ... but the way the Wolverine "supporters" ripped into him ... I wouldn't be surprised to find him dead in a ditch tomorrow. fucking insanity, it really is.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 7 February 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

well yeah, of the twenty largest non-racetrack stadiums in the us seventeen are college football stadiums.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

Hey, uh, Stormy Davis...sorry I called you Jim before. I confused you with the Australian dude. Really doesn't make much sense that I would do that other than that you both have electric in your email addresses.

Now that I've had some time to think about it, the game mostly sucked. I think I'll just write what I'm thinking about it in my blog as I don't feel like debating it, but I will say that I'm kinda glad the Eagles lost in a strange way. They'll still be the NFC pick for the Super Bowl next year so they should get another crack at it and hopefully they will have learned from this.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 7 February 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

yeah both teams stand a strong shot at being back - nfc the panthers will be back and atlanta will still be strong (though next season's when we hold our breath - the falcons have NEVER posted back-to-back winning seasons. HISTORY WILL BE MADE.), maybe bucs improve enough, maybe some other team jumps out, but still eagles gotta be the strong favorite. in the afc the steelers might be losing bettis, plaxico might plaxigo, and to be honest we still don't really know if big ben's for real. he might be one of those steelers qbs the fans are crazy excited about one season and then two seasons later they don't like you to bring their names up (cf. every steelers qb since tb), the colts offense surely won't be as strong, cedric benson or cadillac might be their starting rb next year for all we know, plus i'll believe it when i see it. outside of maybe the bills i don't really buy anyone else maybe looking better poised than the pats next year.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 7 February 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

J! E! T! S?

Assuming Abraham can play more than 6 games? And succeed w/ their non-Hackett OC ("Throw for a first down? What a GOOD idea!" "But what about the 2-yard screen on 3rd & 5, Coach?" *slap* "Draw play? on 1st & 20?" *slap* "Halfback opt" *slap slap* "But, Coach, Wayne Chrebet is our" "SHUT UP!")

I'm sorry - was I saying something?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

If the Bills don't win ten games next year they might as well light Drew Bledsoe on fire. I'm just saying.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

its good to be in New England these days.

JACKSONVILLE, FL—Although NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue declared the Super Bowl XXXIX experiment with in-game product placement a success, fans and players expressed mixed feelings about the championship game Monday.

Above: McNabb attempts to go long with a two-liter bottle of refreshing Pepsi in the third quarter.
"Don't get me wrong—this year's Super Bowl was an exciting face-off," said Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, whose team was defeated 24-21 in a hard-fought contest. "The Patriots only got 331 yards on our defense, mostly because it took us a while to adjust to tackling players doused in Axe Deodorant Bodyspray For Men. But you can be sure they felt the heat of our Ford Motor Company sponsored Lincoln Mark LT blitzes. Our nose tackle drove this season's hottest new luxury truck straight into their offensive line."

In spite of complaints from football fans, Super Bowl XXXIX was a tremendous financial success, with an estimated audience of 2 billion worldwide and a sponsorship revenue exceeding $820 million.

Advertisers as diverse as H&R Block, Verizon, and FTD paid top dollar to have their products and logos used or represented during game play.

"It was great for the team to earn a couple million when we lined up and used the Anheuser-Busch logo as our scrimmage formation," said Eagles safety Brian Dawkins. "Unfortunately, that logo is really elaborate, so we got flagged for having 40 men on the field."

Dawkins was hampered by penalties and flagged once for failing to dial 1-800-COLLECT.

Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who completed 30 of 51 passes for 357 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, said he would have performed even better if it weren't for the wind and the difficulties he experienced throwing the two-liter Pepsi bottle, the oversized Viagra tablet, and the 13 other objects that served as balls during the game.

"This is great for the league, but I'm not sure it's the best thing in the world for the players," McNabb said. "The anxiety made me throw to [wide receiver Todd] Pinkston a half-second before he turned and looked back for the ball—I mean, looked for the can of Campbell's new Chunky Chili. If I hadn't felt so much pressure to please the advertisers, I wouldn't have hit him in the forehead with that pass. I also believe that, if he'd been wearing a traditional helmet instead of a KFC bucket, he wouldn't be in the hospital right now."

http://premium.theonion.com/images/archives/424/article3111.jpg
Above: Dawkins (left) and Eagles defensive lineman Corey Simon praised the "smooth handling" of the Lincoln Mark LT they used to chase down Dillon in the second quarter.
The play in question earned McNabb and Pinkston $65,000 each.

Patriots running back Corey Dillon said it took some time to adjust to the new game rules.

"You expect to get hit, and you expect the game to be played hard," Dillon said. "But you don't expect the quarterback to call a lead-toss right off-tackle play and then hand off a damn 50-pound Kyocera Mita combination copier/printer/fax machine."

In spite of the unusual circumstances, Dillon went free with a 45-yard run, breaking four tackles and making clean, crisp prints all the while, in an open-field romp that office-machine manufacturers are calling the play of the century.

"One thing's certain," Dillon said. "Kyocera office products go the distance."

Patriots wideout Deion Branch, Super Bowl XXXIX's Most Valuable Player, was instrumental to the Patriots victory, catching The Pepsi Spirit, The Great New Feeling Of The Great City Of Jacksonville, and 11 passes for 133 yards.

NFL marketing chief Phil Guarascio admitted that on-field product-placement is in its early stages.

"The league is sensitive to complaints from fans who say advertising should not affect play," Guarascio said. "That's why we've urged Kyocera to develop lighter copiers."

"And we're still hearing things, good and bad, from the professional-sports community," Guarascio continued. "The NFL Player's Association has made several good points about a few ill-considered product placements that may have led to player injuries. Nonetheless, we think product placement will make the NFL a more exciting and profitable venture for players and marketers alike."

According to doctors, Patriots linebacker Teddy Bruschi is still listed in critical condition after recovering a fumble in the Kingsford Charcoal Red Hot End Zone.

Monday At Bernie's (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Being a graduate of a Big Ten school, I can honestly say the whole Michigan vs. Ohio State football thing is completely insane. I saw that billboard outside of Columbus with the "Muck Fichigan" about ten years ago.

A buddy of mine that is a huge Michigan football fan and his favorite t-shirt of all time is his "MIKE TOMCZAK SUCKS" shirt. Every year he would get his heart broken as Michigan would have a chance to win a National Title and yet somehow lose to Ohio St and screw it up, which is ironic as usually when Ohio St. has a chance to win it all they lose to Michigan. Michigan having to share their title killed him, almost as bad as Ohio State winning one.

Michigan coming to Bloomington to play Indiana is a bigger bar day than homecoming and only behind Little 5 for the amount of booze sold in town. IU fans like the tailgating, but the game is pretty much optional except when they play Purdue, which has been a joke the past ten years as the Boilermakers have gotten pretty good.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

I think the Colts will put the franchise tag on Edge and then try to deal him off to Miami. Rumor has it they are interested in Patrick Surtain. Losing James would hurt, but Dominick Rhodes his backup ran for a 1000 yards three years ago when Edge got hurt early in the season. Rhodes has pretty much only played when James was hurt, but has looked ok when he got the ball.

The Colt's defense has gotten better every year since Tony Dungy took over the team. This past year they were really good about getting sacks and causing turnovers. They were also the second youngest defense in the NFL and like four new starters. They have signed up a few of these players for a couple of seasons, so I think they could improve next season in to a top 10 defense.

If I was to pick a dark horse team I think will be tough next year, I would go with the Bengals. They didn't get as much hype as the Bills or Panthers for how well they played in the last part of the season, but they played nearly as well. If they can bring back Rudy Johnson, they will have a very high quality offense and are only a run stopper on the D-line away from being a very good all around team.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

i heard chris mortenson on dan patrick today mention the bengals as a dark horse and thought 'ooh, good pick'. palmer was looking very sharp. i can't believe i forgot rhodes! i've picked him up off the waiver wire enough times in fantasy to know that guy's plenty capable. if i was the dolphins i'd go after shaun alexander over edge but either would do. i'm sure this is go nothing local media nonsense (then again i thought the same thing when the tim hudson to the braves rumors started) but has anyone heard anything about a randy moss to the falcons for peerless price and a first rounder?
