I had a similar scary-as-fuck experience a few weeks ago, though not with an SUV. I wasn't hurt, but I was run off the road, doing about 75, and into a concrete barrier on the highway, I spun around, went up on two wheels, and smashed into the barrier again. Fucking intense. Glad we're both ok.

By the way, I bought the Sun album and I love it.

I was just rear-ended by a large pickup truck, maybe 5-10mph. No apparent damage to my car, but it's possible I may have a sore back tomorrow. I figured I didn't need to get the cops involved, since it was so minor, so I just took his license, phone #, name, and address. Right thing to do or wrong?

i saw i gigantic refrigeration truck stop in the middle of the road and then back into some poor woman in a crappy little chevy. totally destroying the front end. it was classic. the lady was fine - if not kind of insane with anger/adrenaline - so much so that a squeegee kid had to console her and then park her car for her!

is a 5mph prang any worse than say a ride on a rollercoaster when it comes to aches sprains & whiplash?

My car-totaling was both a thrilling near-near-death experience and in a weird way a relief at not having to deal with all the crap that was wrong with my car.

aw sorry rev :( if it makes you feel any better (and i know it won't but i'm trying) i just spent 10 months doing hour and 15 to two hour trips to work (depending on transit situations)

Gave up driving for 5 years after car-total. Prob not an option for most.

I wish I could give up driving (and part of my reason for moving was that it would allow me to cut down on driving), but giving up driving altogether isn't really feasible for me at this time. I work in kind of a weird place where there really isn't any viable point A to point B connector via public transit, even though it isn't really that far away in the grand scheme of things.

Is carpooling an option, Rev? I've never tried it before myself with Metro, so I can't say...what about their Flexcar program?

My friend who I work for said he'll give me rides home (but not to) for the time being, but I'm way out of his way. The Flexcar thing is a good idea, I'll look into that. Thanks.

Drove over a piece of metal (piece of a truck or container or something) that looked like cardboard but wasn't. Loud banging noises, two right tires shredded, front wheel blocked (brake, probabaly, damage on the underside of the car. I'm fine, but damn you, anonymous truck driver. I expect my insurance will go up because in principle you have to be able to avoid or stop for everything that's on the road and stuff. :-/

so got into a minor accident last friday - car is perfectly fine except for dents + scrapes, and driver's side door won't open because of the weird way in which the front quarter panel is dented.

reported the accident to my insurance company, and the other driver did to theirs as well - now they are offering to pay out-of-pocket for my repair, to avoid premiums

any experience with this? I thought you were supposed to offer the out-of-moeny stuff before filing a claim w/ the insurance companies

so last week, I was in a parking garage trying to park so I could see Spectre. for some reason, there was a queue going up all the way to the second level so while there were tons of open spaces, I couldn't really park because I had no space to pull out enough to get into it.

in a dumb move, I tried to negotiate one of the spaces and on doing so, lightly rubbed the back bumper of a car. the person was in the car so I apologized, said it was my fault, and once I managed to be able to park legitimately, got out so I could give her my info. she called the police but as she told the police nobody was injured and the damage was under $500, as per FL law, they said they didn't need to come by. the damage was minimal to both cars - you can see a scratch on my bumper, her damage wasn't even visible in the poor lighting but I assume I left a paint trade given how mine looked. she was polite in the end and we went our separate ways.

the claim that I expected was filed, which was fine. However, then the adjuster asks me if she was in the car at the time. I stated I thought she had just gotten out, but couldn't remember clearly. He then tells me she says she was in the car and reported that she is "sore" now.

I try not to pull the "that's impossible" card because I know injuries can happen even during low speed collisions, but this wasn't a rear end collision at say 10 mph where the impacted car actually vibrated or moved forward after being hit. It was a slight rub of one bumper against another at 3 mph - the damage was so minimal you can't even see from a distance. No denting or crumpling. And she's trying to report an injury?

I also realize that injuries don't immediately show themselves, but she reported to the police at the scene that she wasn't hurt and again - the car did not move, it just rubbed. I'm typically one to give benefit of the doubt, because I know even a ten mph rear-end could hurt someone, but it seems suspect that this slight paint trade would cause her significant pain, especially after she reported no injury at the scene. also, she used exaggerated language at the scene (she actually said "You wrecked my car!" when she got out and suggested I'd been drinking at one point when I hadn't had one all night).

am I likely to get screwed on this one? I took a picture of my vehicle's bumper and sent it to my claims adjuster this morning to show how minor of an impact it was.

yeah, it's not uncommon for people to get encouraged by friends/family/etc to claim unproveable crap like whiplash in an attempt to get more money from your insurance.

I was in a partner clients building for the week and decided to go see Cannibal Corpse in Jacksonville after.

Strange, poorly lit area in the left lane and this older man had his truck sitting on the median, hanging into my lane. No lights on, didn't see him, plowed into his back end.

He was the nicest guy and apologized to me and everybody tended to me.

All things considered..coulda been worse. Windshield cracked, both bags deployed, but i'm ok. Just emotionally drained but relieved

thanks all. neck pain is better, actually was never that bad. found a degenerative disc condition in my neck but I'm willing to bet they would have found that pre-accident too.

psychologically, I was initially a mess, but had so many friends call me to check on me.

this work project is cursed. the following has happened to members of my team:

Original analyst (which is my job) got laid off
Domain mgr had to go on leave due to boyfriend w/ life-threatening condition
Customer service manager totaled *HIS* car falling asleep at the wheel last weekend
now I wrecked mine

there's only one dude left who has gotten away scot free.

i was rear-ended last wednesday. i suffered a concussion, was home resting pretty much all last week

the insurance rep called me this week and lets me know that my car (that i just spent $1800 on repairs 5 days before the accident) has been deemed a total loss. they will only pay for my rental car for 10 days. i haven't even thought for a second about buying a new car, a decision i thought i wouldn't have to make for another 3-5 years and would be able to spend months researching. now i have 10 days to do it!

When did the USB/AUX port become standard? I drive a 2001 civic so I have no clue what is standard with newer cars.

Anyway, it sucks you have to deal with that over a short-term. I get anxious having to rush through big-purchase decisions that you know are going to affect you for years to come.

lol marcos I was kinda happy to get a new one with Bluetooth as I'd pretty much been USBing all my music in the old car as I tend to lose CDs very easily.

the money you spent on repairs should increase of ACV of the car that they give you, not necessarily by that amount, but it'll help. do you know if you'll be getting more than you owed on the car? that's always nice when you can use it for a down payment.

thank you. car has huge deep scratches on the whole passenger side and veers left when I drive it. alloy wheel has half-inch gashes in it

as deeply annoying as that accident is, it's nothing at all compared to your being physically intact. pilots say any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. they're right.

so stressful. i'm stressed out of my mind. because i am a serial procastinator i hadn't yet put my new car under the policy, i thought i was within a 30-day grace period but the period is only 14 days, so my insurance co doesn't want to pay for it. im trying to work something out with them but FUCK ARE YOU SERIOUS ugh

for what it's worth I had nearly a decade of no car drama (outside of a poor raccoon that popped up on the interstate) and once I got a different car several years ago, I had *three* incidents within one year.

one was purely me and caused no damage to the other car, one was a dumb parking lot thing where I was 3/4 of the way out of the spot and stopped looking in the rearview just long enough for a lady to back out where I was moving, and for the coup de grace, I had my car parked on the street and someone sideswiped my front fender overnight and left no note

it's been smooth sailing since then, so maybe it's a jinxed period of time. it'll stop!

I think when I got this car I was paranoid enough about it that I’d logged into my insurance company’s website and added the new car to my policy by the time they’d finished pulling it around for pickup at the dealer

good news! Perhaps you could have avoided this accident and the resulting spike in stress if you were a stressed out, ultra-cautious driver. However, the sum of that ultra-cautious driving stress may be greater than that for a responsible, but reasonably chill driver that has a small accident from time to time. In this way, you have optimized a small part of your life.

I backed our truck out the other day and unwittingly almost hit our other car because I had stupidly parked it in a different part of the driveway. that would have been great, two for the price of one. it was so close, 2-3 inches.

Not me, but my cousin was t-boned today in downtown Cleveland by someone who ran a red light. According to her mom "{X} is good, headache, we are waiting to see if any scans of head are needed. Will probably need to bury the Toyota. {X} was hit and spun around so much her glasses flew off her face and thru the broken passenger window. Thank gosh she was on the passenger side and not the drivers."

She's getting married this summer and I dread the thought of her dealing with lingering pain at her own wedding.

my wife grew up in L.A. and didn't drive around too much, but i grew up in the country and everyone i knew was driving around all the time. i knew 4 people in high school who were killed in car accidents and it was always some ridiculous stupidity late at night. driving 90 MPH down a stretch of road and losing control and hitting a tree and that sort of thing. my best friend in HS died that way. my other best friend, his just-ex GF died that way.

i sort of hate cars but where I'm at it's inescapable, and i think i've turned into such a Sunday driver, especially when I'm with my kid (as one should expect!) sometimes i get a tailgater when my kid's in the back and i tell him to raise his hands up high and wave them around so the person behind me actually knows there's a kid with me. surprisingly it mostly works. less surprisingly, sometimes it doesn't.

the worst time to drive in L.A. is after 11 PM and it gets worst throughout the night. drunk drivers own the road after 2 AM around here, even w/Uber and Lyft.

is it dumb for me to assume that a lot of uber/lyft drivers drive drunk
