Horrible news -- but good to hear you are indeed alive and not worse off! Rest up, do nothing, and be well soon. And no babymaking until your condition improves!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 9 January 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i was on my way to pick up my sister from work because the weather was horrible in Massachusetts and i didn't want her to drive. i took the 4-wheel drive vehicle. so i see this white suv really bombing it down the other side of the street he slides, hits the car in front of me careens off him and plows into me. airbags and all. i remember climbing out of the window to get out, looking around and then saying "wheres my ipod"? im sore as fuck and probably damamged my knees permanently...but at least im alive. thanks for the love guys. i will post pics of the car!

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Sunday, 9 January 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Medical Expenses, Loss of Income, Pain and Suffering... white suv PWNED. Still, I wish it hadn't happened.

colette (a2lette), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ah fuck, that's awful Chris. Get well soon, and make the most of the time off.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

From one Masshole to another - get well soon! yesterday was really just a circus of bad driving in MA. I'm glad you survived - and the ipod is a good piece of news as well.
Get as much as you can from insurance and...get some heat for that other car!
I didn't even venture onto the roads until today, and even today was almost taken out by several SUV's and minivans. Because they can't even see my boyfriends honda civic, which i am driving while waiting for my tiny volkswagon golf to be fixed.
People are crazy with the driving - I hope the knee damage is less permanent than you think, and my heart is with you. Vicodin and insurance forms for you, my friend! xo Alison

aimurchie, Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Get well, Chris!

.adam (nordicskilla), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Glad to hear you're (relatively) OK. It sounds like you're in good hands. Good to hear about the iPod too!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

What they all said. My big brother got hit by a train once on a level crossing, so I totally understand the "thank fuck I got out of it" feeling you must have.

Take care xx

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope you heal up soon, buddy. And it might be a good idea to get your sister to move before a fucking METEORITE lands on your condo! ;-)

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay for the iPod! Do keep us informed as to the fate of White SUV character and how said person will have to cry a lot now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG WAS IT OJ?

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 9 January 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in a car crash
Or was it the war
But I've never been
Quite the same.

Hope you recover quickly and I hope the knees aren't too seriously banged up. You seem to be in good spirits, which is the important thing.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris, I join the rest of the chorus of voices herein in saying that we wish you the best of luck in having a speedy recovery and in making sure the other driver has his comeuppance. And every person out there who is even considering driving an SUV should be forced to learn how to drive one for about a year and a half before being allowed to own one.

Signed,

An SUV driver who's much more careful than that

(Also, I'm grateful that you're still alive, hon.)

Samantha Baker (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

God that must have been a shock. hang in there Chris, hope you're doing ok.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

best wishes

isadora (isadora), Sunday, 9 January 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a pair of SUVs knock each other into oblivion at an intersection a few days back, because both were going pretty fast and it was raining, and apparently they didn't like traffic going the speed limit on slick roads. Those things aren't hatchbacks, people!

Glad you're okay!

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 9 January 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

my absolute best to you, Chris.

donut christ (donut), Sunday, 9 January 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Chris! Hope you get well soon. (If you have to do physical therapy for your knees, it will be a pain, but according to my sister's husband it's best to go through with it.)

youn, Monday, 10 January 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

how awful, Chris. hope everything heals soon.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 10 January 2005 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

SUVs should only be allowed in accidents with each other.

I had a similar scary-as-fuck experience a few weeks ago, though not with an SUV. I wasn't hurt, but I was run off the road, doing about 75, and into a concrete barrier on the highway, I spun around, went up on two wheels, and smashed into the barrier again. Fucking intense. Glad we're both ok.

Yeah, joking (above) aside, that looks like a pretty bad impact.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

I was just rear-ended by a large pickup truck, maybe 5-10mph. No apparent damage to my car, but it's possible I may have a sore back tomorrow. I figured I didn't need to get the cops involved, since it was so minor, so I just took his license, phone #, name, and address. Right thing to do or wrong?

libcrypt, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

sorry, but RONG.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Should maybe have exchanged insurance info, but yeah if it's a fender-bender no need to do much more than that. Get a heating pad, if you don't already have one, to help with the potential aches.

Jaq, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

No fenders were even bent, tho. Yeah, I should have gotten more info. I wasn't really thinking clearly at the time.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

i saw i gigantic refrigeration truck stop in the middle of the road and then back into some poor woman in a crappy little chevy. totally destroying the front end. it was classic. the lady was fine - if not kind of insane with anger/adrenaline - so much so that a squeegee kid had to console her and then park her car for her!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

is a 5mph prang any worse than say a ride on a rollercoaster when it comes to aches sprains & whiplash?

five months pass...

fucking fuck

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:04 (seventeen years ago)

I'm alright, as is the guy whose truck I crashed into, as is his truck. My car I just bought half a year ago is totalled, though. No collision insurance. : (

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

This really couldn't happen at a worse time considering not only am I flat broke, but I'm supposed to be moving this weekend.

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)

damn dude what put you in the karma hole

El Tomboto, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:07 (seventeen years ago)

that really sucks, is what I meant to say

(I can't bring myself to post to RIP threads or even birthday threads but somebody totals an automobile I'm all over it. Nice going)

El Tomboto, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:08 (seventeen years ago)

sorry to hear this rev

J0rdan S., Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

It's cool, Tombot. No offense taken.

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

this is so sad!

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)

Metro Transit's website tells me the fastest bus trip to and from work is about an hour and forty minutes, which will be but down to an hour and ten minutes after I move.

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)

cut down

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)

well that's a little better

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

must have been terrifying

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:25 (seventeen years ago)

That totally sucks, sorry to hear it.

HI DERE, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:35 (seventeen years ago)

Damn. Sorry Rev, that sounds awful.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 29 May 2008 04:06 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man, Rev. You have my condolences. When my car got totalled I felt like I'd killed one of my best friends.

Abbott, Thursday, 29 May 2008 04:30 (seventeen years ago)

My car-totaling was both a thrilling near-near-death experience and in a weird way a relief at not having to deal with all the crap that was wrong with my car.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 29 May 2008 04:32 (seventeen years ago)

aw sorry rev :( if it makes you feel any better (and i know it won't but i'm trying) i just spent 10 months doing hour and 15 to two hour trips to work (depending on transit situations)

tehresa, Thursday, 29 May 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

Gave up driving for 5 years after car-total. Prob not an option for most.

libcrypt, Thursday, 29 May 2008 05:02 (seventeen years ago)

how rotten. sorry about that.

Maria, Thursday, 29 May 2008 10:40 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks for the condolences everyone.

I wish I could give up driving (and part of my reason for moving was that it would allow me to cut down on driving), but giving up driving altogether isn't really feasible for me at this time. I work in kind of a weird place where there really isn't any viable point A to point B connector via public transit, even though it isn't really that far away in the grand scheme of things.

rev, Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

Is carpooling an option, Rev? I've never tried it before myself with Metro, so I can't say...what about their Flexcar program?

Bimble, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

My friend who I work for said he'll give me rides home (but not to) for the time being, but I'm way out of his way. The Flexcar thing is a good idea, I'll look into that. Thanks.

rev, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

sorry rev, but glad you are okay.

estela, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

Rev, I am sorry and suprised to hear this. And you are a good driver! (And I do not say that often!) Was this a driving into/under monster truck situation? That'll total any car.

the higgs, Friday, 30 May 2008 00:35 (seventeen years ago)

ay, under

rev, Friday, 30 May 2008 00:44 (seventeen years ago)

oh man Rev, so sorry to see this thread! I'm glad you're okay.

Flexcar got bought out by Zipcar - I use them occasionally.

Jaq, Friday, 30 May 2008 00:50 (seventeen years ago)

wait, rev = The Reverend? that's some sub-tomboto shit

mookieproof, Friday, 30 May 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

yeahyeahyeah, "rev" = images-off account

rev, Friday, 30 May 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

I just witnessed a church van try to beat a red light very late, clip a fairly clean hi-riser caddy, do a 180 and damn near roll over.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

Drove over a piece of metal (piece of a truck or container or something) that looked like cardboard but wasn't. Loud banging noises, two right tires shredded, front wheel blocked (brake, probabaly, damage on the underside of the car. I'm fine, but damn you, anonymous truck driver. I expect my insurance will go up because in principle you have to be able to avoid or stop for everything that's on the road and stuff. :-/

StanM, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

StanM, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

so got into a minor accident last friday - car is perfectly fine except for dents + scrapes, and driver's side door won't open because of the weird way in which the front quarter panel is dented.

reported the accident to my insurance company, and the other driver did to theirs as well - now they are offering to pay out-of-pocket for my repair, to avoid premiums

any experience with this? I thought you were supposed to offer the out-of-moeny stuff before filing a claim w/ the insurance companies

smells like ok (soda) (dayo), Sunday, 5 August 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

three years pass...

so last week, I was in a parking garage trying to park so I could see Spectre. for some reason, there was a queue going up all the way to the second level so while there were tons of open spaces, I couldn't really park because I had no space to pull out enough to get into it.

in a dumb move, I tried to negotiate one of the spaces and on doing so, lightly rubbed the back bumper of a car. the person was in the car so I apologized, said it was my fault, and once I managed to be able to park legitimately, got out so I could give her my info. she called the police but as she told the police nobody was injured and the damage was under $500, as per FL law, they said they didn't need to come by. the damage was minimal to both cars - you can see a scratch on my bumper, her damage wasn't even visible in the poor lighting but I assume I left a paint trade given how mine looked. she was polite in the end and we went our separate ways.

the claim that I expected was filed, which was fine. However, then the adjuster asks me if she was in the car at the time. I stated I thought she had just gotten out, but couldn't remember clearly. He then tells me she says she was in the car and reported that she is "sore" now.

I try not to pull the "that's impossible" card because I know injuries can happen even during low speed collisions, but this wasn't a rear end collision at say 10 mph where the impacted car actually vibrated or moved forward after being hit. It was a slight rub of one bumper against another at 3 mph - the damage was so minimal you can't even see from a distance. No denting or crumpling. And she's trying to report an injury?

I also realize that injuries don't immediately show themselves, but she reported to the police at the scene that she wasn't hurt and again - the car did not move, it just rubbed. I'm typically one to give benefit of the doubt, because I know even a ten mph rear-end could hurt someone, but it seems suspect that this slight paint trade would cause her significant pain, especially after she reported no injury at the scene. also, she used exaggerated language at the scene (she actually said "You wrecked my car!" when she got out and suggested I'd been drinking at one point when I hadn't had one all night).

am I likely to get screwed on this one? I took a picture of my vehicle's bumper and sent it to my claims adjuster this morning to show how minor of an impact it was.

yeah, it's not uncommon for people to get encouraged by friends/family/etc to claim unproveable crap like whiplash in an attempt to get more money from your insurance.

At least unlike the last time...I was sober and not at fault.

Happened 100 miles away from home. Totalled. Oi...after a 70 hour work week.

Xrays and ct scans mostly fine tho

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Saturday, 4 November 2017 22:41 (eight years ago)

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Saturday, 4 November 2017 22:45 (eight years ago)

I was in a partner clients building for the week and decided to go see Cannibal Corpse in Jacksonville after.

Strange, poorly lit area in the left lane and this older man had his truck sitting on the median, hanging into my lane. No lights on, didn't see him, plowed into his back end.

He was the nicest guy and apologized to me and everybody tended to me.

All things considered..coulda been worse. Windshield cracked, both bags deployed, but i'm ok. Just emotionally drained but relieved

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Saturday, 4 November 2017 23:40 (eight years ago)

Never made it to the show.

Was smelling airbag dust for hours. Awful scent

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Saturday, 4 November 2017 23:41 (eight years ago)

I'm extremely glad you are intact. That's awful. I hope you had no emotional attachment to the poor contraption.

Clearly this is because earlier today I thought, out of nowhere, "you know what band nobody has mentioned in my presence lately? Cannibal Corpse."

thanks all. neck pain is better, actually was never that bad. found a degenerative disc condition in my neck but I'm willing to bet they would have found that pre-accident too.

psychologically, I was initially a mess, but had so many friends call me to check on me.

this work project is cursed. the following has happened to members of my team:

Original analyst (which is my job) got laid off
Domain mgr had to go on leave due to boyfriend w/ life-threatening condition
Customer service manager totaled *HIS* car falling asleep at the wheel last weekend
now I wrecked mine

there's only one dude left who has gotten away scot free.

got new wheels. fatigue has been a huge problem since the accident. neck doesn't hurt but definitely feels 'crick'-y at times.

still...good week considering.

two months pass...

this blows

i was rear-ended last wednesday. i suffered a concussion, was home resting pretty much all last week

the insurance rep called me this week and lets me know that my car (that i just spent $1800 on repairs 5 days before the accident) has been deemed a total loss. they will only pay for my rental car for 10 days. i haven't even thought for a second about buying a new car, a decision i thought i wouldn't have to make for another 3-5 years and would be able to spend months researching. now i have 10 days to do it!

thanks everybody. i'm feeling better and as far as car accidents go a minor concussion ain't too bad. it could've been worse. i am just so bummed about the administrative hassle of having to deal with this. big purchases suck.

good to know, thanks phil! i'll likely be buying a used car - when i said "new" i guess i meant to new to me :) if i change my mind tho i'll let u know thru ilx mail!

marcos, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 21:55 (seven years ago)

man sorry about that marcos. I'm still dealing with the admin issues of mine (mostly the medical bills)....Really really fuckin sucks too when you just sunk a fortune into repairing it :(....

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 22:14 (seven years ago)

yea that is the worst part i think? i had put off repairs for like a year and then finally did them, all a bunch of small things, new tires, etc. hopefully i can recoup some of that but idk

marcos, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 22:20 (seven years ago)

one very small silver lining is that i will finally get a car with an aux port or usb or whatever. i still buy cds because my car doesn't have a tape deck or an aux port

marcos, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 22:21 (seven years ago)

SO GOODBYE CDS

(though i will probably still buy them)

marcos, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 22:21 (seven years ago)

When did the USB/AUX port become standard? I drive a 2001 civic so I have no clue what is standard with newer cars.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 22:36 (seven years ago)

Anyway, it sucks you have to deal with that over a short-term. I get anxious having to rush through big-purchase decisions that you know are going to affect you for years to come.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 22:37 (seven years ago)

usb/aux been standard for like 5-6 years at least.

many new cars don't have cd players which really fucks me up.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 23 January 2018 22:38 (seven years ago)

lol marcos I was kinda happy to get a new one with Bluetooth as I'd pretty much been USBing all my music in the old car as I tend to lose CDs very easily.

the money you spent on repairs should increase of ACV of the car that they give you, not necessarily by that amount, but it'll help. do you know if you'll be getting more than you owed on the car? that's always nice when you can use it for a down payment.

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 23 January 2018 23:02 (seven years ago)

marcos, Monday, 5 March 2018 18:35 (seven years ago)

as deeply annoying as that accident is, it's nothing at all compared to your being physically intact. pilots say any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. they're right.

so stressful. i'm stressed out of my mind. because i am a serial procastinator i hadn't yet put my new car under the policy, i thought i was within a 30-day grace period but the period is only 14 days, so my insurance co doesn't want to pay for it. im trying to work something out with them but FUCK ARE YOU SERIOUS ugh

i feel like im gonna post in the lump thread. everything sucks right now, this is such a burden that i don't feel like i can handle becaues a whole bunch of other shit is happening that i can't deal with

So what happened?

rb (soda), Monday, 5 March 2018 22:05 (seven years ago)

made a left hand turn and didn't see a car turning right from the curb lane. wasn't going fast but the collision was a slow deep grind

marcos, Monday, 5 March 2018 22:07 (seven years ago)

ugh, I'm sorry, marcos

for what it's worth I had nearly a decade of no car drama (outside of a poor raccoon that popped up on the interstate) and once I got a different car several years ago, I had *three* incidents within one year.

one was purely me and caused no damage to the other car, one was a dumb parking lot thing where I was 3/4 of the way out of the spot and stopped looking in the rearview just long enough for a lady to back out where I was moving, and for the coup de grace, I had my car parked on the street and someone sideswiped my front fender overnight and left no note

it's been smooth sailing since then, so maybe it's a jinxed period of time. it'll stop!

mh, Monday, 5 March 2018 22:49 (seven years ago)

ha definitely feels jinxed for sure

one good thing is that I read my insurance policy and the guy I talked to was most certainly wrong in telling me that the new car wasn't covered yet

marcos, Monday, 5 March 2018 23:48 (seven years ago)

I was right on the 30 days

marcos, Monday, 5 March 2018 23:49 (seven years ago)

get on that quicker in the future!

I think when I got this car I was paranoid enough about it that I’d logged into my insurance company’s website and added the new car to my policy by the time they’d finished pulling it around for pickup at the dealer

mh, Monday, 5 March 2018 23:52 (seven years ago)

lol i did that

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 March 2018 23:54 (seven years ago)

buddy it’s the US of A, you have one thing happen when you’re not covered on some sort of insurance and you’re fucked for life

well more so on health insurance but point stands

mh, Monday, 5 March 2018 23:58 (seven years ago)

good news! Perhaps you could have avoided this accident and the resulting spike in stress if you were a stressed out, ultra-cautious driver. However, the sum of that ultra-cautious driving stress may be greater than that for a responsible, but reasonably chill driver that has a small accident from time to time. In this way, you have optimized a small part of your life.

Dat Login was the dname u doofus (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 5 March 2018 23:59 (seven years ago)

it all still sucks but thank fucking christ that the insurance company will pay for everything

marcos, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 15:49 (seven years ago)

great news on the insurance, glad you're OK also

sleeve, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 16:29 (seven years ago)

I backed our truck out the other day and unwittingly almost hit our other car because I had stupidly parked it in a different part of the driveway. that would have been great, two for the price of one. it was so close, 2-3 inches.

sleeve, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 16:30 (seven years ago)

Not me, but my cousin was t-boned today in downtown Cleveland by someone who ran a red light. According to her mom "{X} is good, headache, we are waiting to see if any scans of head are needed. Will probably need to bury the Toyota. {X} was hit and spun around so much her glasses flew off her face and thru the broken passenger window. Thank gosh she was on the passenger side and not the drivers."

Millennial Whoop, wanna fight about it? (Phil D.), Thursday, 8 March 2018 17:48 (seven years ago)

my wife grew up in L.A. and didn't drive around too much, but i grew up in the country and everyone i knew was driving around all the time. i knew 4 people in high school who were killed in car accidents and it was always some ridiculous stupidity late at night. driving 90 MPH down a stretch of road and losing control and hitting a tree and that sort of thing. my best friend in HS died that way. my other best friend, his just-ex GF died that way.

i sort of hate cars but where I'm at it's inescapable, and i think i've turned into such a Sunday driver, especially when I'm with my kid (as one should expect!) sometimes i get a tailgater when my kid's in the back and i tell him to raise his hands up high and wave them around so the person behind me actually knows there's a kid with me. surprisingly it mostly works. less surprisingly, sometimes it doesn't.

the worst time to drive in L.A. is after 11 PM and it gets worst throughout the night. drunk drivers own the road after 2 AM around here, even w/Uber and Lyft.

omar little, Thursday, 8 March 2018 17:53 (seven years ago)

is it dumb for me to assume that a lot of uber/lyft drivers drive drunk

marcos, Thursday, 8 March 2018 18:28 (seven years ago)

i literally almost had another one on the way home.

Big assed semi starts to creep across to the median as I'm approaching in the left lane.

i am thinking there is no way he's going to try and pop in front of me as I would basically have to hard brake the tailgater behind me which would be a disaster in the making. so i kept going

fucker actually inches into my lane as I am approaching the same area.... like he thought I was going to stop for him. then he stops. i stupidly reflexively started to move to the right lane before seeing there was someone in it.

swerved back and was fine. and dumb semi driver then reversedhis truck back into the gas station in
