destroy: adam sandler.

It's nice that PT Anderson could make a decent movie out of Punch-Drunk Love, but I still say that Adam Sandler should not be a famous person. He's just a goddamn goof.

I'm tickled by the idea '50 First Dates' might be a kind of 'secret' 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. Is this a vain hope?

Miles Finch, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

It's cute. Miles better than, say, Happy Gilmore. Drew Berrymore is so sweet she gives you a toothache, which you have to be in the mood for, but is not always bad.

He isn't goddamned Al Pacino (paqino) .. He does an adequate job of acting in stupid movies that rake in a lot of cash. Sometimes people like stupid movies. (Some people always like stupid movies.) Do we need a "better" actor to do that?

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

We need one less.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

50 First Dates was one of the sweetest movies I've ever seen. As such, I flip back and forth between loving it and regretting the rot it hath, er, wrought upon the teeth of my soul.

His most unfairly maligned movie IMHO = Big Daddy. I would go so far as to call it an excellent movie, if there existed a version with no Rob Shneider in it whatsoever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

I had never really thought about it, but 50 First Dates really is some kinda yin to Eternal Sunshine's yang.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Happy gilmore was okay, but that one where he played a demon was utter.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Adam Sandler's entire career is justified from here on in because of "The Wedding Singer".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Anger Management was wretched, I could barely watch 10 minutes of it. I liked his small ukelele playing role in Mixed Nuts, myself.

you sound like the gym teacher from freaks and geeks when he goes "that bill murray is a wiseass!"

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

All of his films with the exception of Punch Drunk Love (one of the absolute worst films ever made - just painful to watch, terrible soundtrack and just really really boring) are great. 50 First Dates and Mr Deeds are both excellent.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I saw 'Angger Management'. It's his 'Fight Club', I guess. Kind of wastes an amazing supporting cast, and it has this bizarre conservative view of romance underpinning it, and a fucking Giuliani cameo, but it's pretty good. It's totally conflicted, Sandler keeps going off about 'crazies', without noticeable irony. As with 'There's Something About Mary' and 'Meet the Parents' I kind of feel: this didn't need all the crude stuff. Let the real humour work its magic.

Adam Sandler is the embodiment of the American Dream. Where else in the world could he star in and produce a movie where a Jew controls the entire universe with a remote control and have it be a stupid summer comedy and not an award-winning documentary? I know that Sony is pitching Click like 2006's Farenheit 911 in Saudi Arabia.

Cunga (Cunga), Saturday, 10 June 2006 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison are just timeless masterpieces. I mean, the scene at the end of HG where the golf coach, the alligator, and a clown are waving down to him from heaven is nothing short of genius.

http://www.nypress.com/20/29/film/ArmondWhite2.cfm

Sandler’s typical bratty humor rectifies the frat-boy mentality his fans might expect. Sandler and James skillfully liberate macho rigidity by spoofing gay and straight males’ skittishness. Chuck & Larry has more laughs per minute than any movie since Hot Fuzz.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

"Chuck & Larry has more laughs per minute than any movie since Hot Fuzz."

"The ultimate moral lesson—that sexuality has absolutely nothing to do with who Chuck and Larry are as people—may seem simplistic, but the focus on humanity (including a traditional courtroom climax to restore society’s balance) proves that lesson is sound."

yeah "which film critics do you trust?"

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago)

Which film critics do you trust (if any?)

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

well, many social/screwball comedies do climax w/ a restorative courtroom scene. The rest, I dunno,

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

True, but as a subset of their "focus on humanity"?

wavy g. wavegarten (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 March 2011 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

I used to love him but nowadays he mostly makes me angry. Here are the last 3 Sandlers I saw:

8 Crazy Nights : watched it on cable out of curiosity, didn't make it past an hour but holy Christ is it terrible. It has no concievable audience..the animation and musical style is supposed to make this geared towards kids, but some of the 'humor' is ridiculously blue and vulgar. Nobody could possibly like this movie.

Click : not a single part of the premise worked, though I kind of dug the weird direction the story went in later. I cannot have any sympathy for a character whose life is so priviledged that the boring parts include having sex with Kate Beckinsale. Could have been good, but the humor was really crass and didnt belong

50 First Dates : really bad in pretty much every way, I have no idea how Sandler goes from banging a bunch of hot tourists to wanting to settle down with a woman who not only has a huge mental handicap but isn't particularly attractive or sweet or even smart. Noble, yes, but this is an Adam Sandler movie.

frogbs, Friday, 25 March 2011 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

didn't mind 8 crazy nights. click is one of the worst films i have ever seen.

jordan otm i should know better

johnny crunch, Friday, 25 March 2011 21:07 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, I didn't mention the musical number with a bunch of coporate mall logos singing...wow

I saw Anger Management as well...that too was one of the worst films I've ever seen. Total waste of talent. Like...having Jack Nicholson make him stop in the middle of a busy tunnel while other motorists pass by and swear at him is A) not funny, B) completely unsafe, and C) not something that anyone would ever do. Like I understand where humor is supposed to come from, but they need to realize that you don't get much humor from having characters that do things that are absolutely psychotic and contrary to what any real person would do in that situation. This happens in literally every single Adam Sandler movie ever made.

AP story on the box office

Sandler's "That's My Boy" bombed with $13 million, the worst showing for one of his broad comedies since the mid-1990s. "That's My Boy" came in at No. 5, behind the $13.8 million for "Snow White & the Huntsman," a film that's been out for three weekends already.

"Sure, we would have liked to have done more," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution at Sony, which released "That's My Boy" and most of Sandler's past movies. "But you've got to give it to Adam. He mixes it up. This is a really off-the-wall comedy."

...

"As with most Sandler movies, the reviews were bad, but that usually does not stop his audience of young males from showing up.

The R rating for "That's My Boy" may have cut into the movie's business, prohibiting those under 17 from seeing it without an adult. Sandler's comedies usually are rated PG-13.

curmudgeon, Monday, 18 June 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, they probably fucked up in having it rated R. no one in that age range wants to see a new adam sandler movie.

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

sandler pumps out enough movies that some are bound to bomb, right?

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

i guess he's had a pretty strong string of hits tho recently

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

kind of, but how much money he's made even with movies that seem like they should be bombs is pretty amazing:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=adamsandler.htm

even Jack & Jill made $75 mil, and the only things since Little Nicky that had made less than that were the 'mature' movies (Funny People, Reign Over Me, Punch Drunk Love, Spanglish). i mean Chuck And Larry, Grown Ups, Just Go With It, 50 First Dates, fucking You Don't Mess With The Zohan, all $100 million hits.

Those early sandler movies -- and seeing them, with good justification, be defended by people - remind me of when people would rep for the early albums by critically uncool post grunge alt bands from the 90s. It's like people defending The Blue Album and Pinkerton when Rivers Cuomo released Beverley Hills.

Buscemi had already been in Reservoir Dogs by the time he crossed paths with Sandler, he's more like the Sonic Youth figure lending cred. although it's kinda sad that he's getting too old to play Butch Vig in a Nirvana movie someday.

Sandler peaked with Opera Man, 95% of his movies are worthless garbage, including Billy Madison

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

steve martin is a way classier assclown than sandler, but i just saw fletch and couldn't help thinking how much funnier it would have been with sandler instead of chevy chase. i feel like jerry lewis is more gifted in the assclown department but his body language is so full of malevolence that sandler edges him out. if you could somehow combine jerry lewis, sandler, steve martin and chris farley, you could make some kind of super-assclown.

entry-level umami (mild bleu cheese vibes) (s.clover), Sunday, 17 May 2015 03:18 (ten years ago)

The first 40 minutes of The Cobbler are obnoxious, bigoted, and unfunny; and then it gets worse, as the second 40 minutes are an inscrutable heist movie with an overweening desire to Say Something despite being completely deranged, and absurdly amoral for something nominally about doing the right thing, all while hinging its plot on the idea that every man in New York has the same shoe size. And then it gets worse. The movie plunges down and down, until it ends at its very worst moment. If there was anything in the whole 99 minute farrago to suggest that Tom McCarthy knew what humor was, I would insistently grab onto it as a parody of contemporary popcorn movies, but everything about the staging wants it to be sweet and tender and true.

entry-level umami (mild bleu cheese vibes) (s.clover), Sunday, 17 May 2015 03:19 (ten years ago)

Of course, I fully expect that some people reading this will immediately hunt the film down, and I wish to publicly and earnestly disavow any responsibility for their choices. To lead people to The Cobbler would be nothing short of a crime. Not as big a crime as having made the film in the first place, but a crime nonetheless.

When the humans defeat the aliens once and for all (spoiler alert), the pixelated Paperboy, Frogger and other attackers wreaking havoc on the streets of Washington, DC, start disappearing. Even the buxom blonde -- the one Ludlow has a multi-decade crush on; who inexplicably turns from pixel to flesh mid-battle and starts fighting alongside the humans -- fades away.

A tearful Ludlow asks why Q-bert gets to stay and not Lady Lisa. "Q-bert is a trophy," van Patten says. "We get to keep trophies." That's when the little orange alien turns itself into the platinum-coiffed object of Ludlow's affection. His dream girl is now a trophy he owns forever. Seriously. The epilogue is a shot of a crib full of little Q-berts. I couldn't make this shit up if I tried.

So on Halloween, a few of my daughters close friends' families got together for a backyard movie night after trick or treating. The kids weren't all that interested in watching a movie though, so someone got the idea to put something on for the grown-ups: the new Adam Sandler movie, Hubie Halloween. I haven't seen a Sandler film (other than the Hotel Transylvania series) since The Waterboy. I didn't actively watch any of it, but Sandler's voice throughout was enough to tell me that this wasn't for me. Worst thing was that I was having a decent conversation with another parent who I really like, but whenever anyone new arrived to the party, would break away to ask them if they'd seen it yet and tell them how many funny cameos there are.

I watched part of a couple of them with the kids. We tried Wedding Singer first and wound up turning it off. I found it painfully unfunny and uncharming. Drew Barrymore is immediately in love with him for no apparent reason, no buildup, and it's supposed to be cute that he uses her to make some kid feel better about himself and encourages ass grabbing. The Boy George joke is not only transphobia played for laps (unfortunately common in comedies until pretty recently) but just isn't even funny on its own terms and is nonetheless dragged out and repeated to exhaustion. The kids didn't really get any of the humor.

Billy Madison landed a little better because it's just so entirely absurd and without any pretense of plausibility that it gets away with a lot more. Still some pretty cringey moments and his character is just so totally unlikeable that it was hard to watch.
