ILX Direct Connect Hub

Crossposting from ILM:

I've just set up a Direct Connect Hub so that we may share files with one another. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this technology, direct connect is a system similar to Soulseek, except more specialised. Here's how it works:

* You download a generic Direct Connect client, like DC++ (for Windows users) or NeoModus (for OS X or Windows users).
* You up that client to share your files. (should be fairly self-explanatory) You need to share at least 500mb of stuff to connect to this Hub.
* You connect to the Direct Connect Hub located at 'ilx.p3r.net:6000' (that is, hostname 'ilx.p3r.net' on port 6000).
* You can search or browse through other user's shares, and download their stuff.

Yay.

No problem by me.

Is it just my wonky connection or is everything hella laggy?

It shouldn't be. What exactly is it that you're finding laggy? The connection process? Chat? File transfers?

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, I'm using the built in OS X firewall and the above NeoModus client. If you are behind a NAT gateway (like a home router thingee or airport express), you should set the client to use "passive mode".

If you are running the OS X firewall thingee, make it allow ports 56067 and 56130; it can be found under Preferences, Sharing, Firewall.

Problems. When I first launched the client, there were no icons in the Toolbar. Went to "Customize Toolbar" and dragged the default set, okay, no problem. According to the Welcome tab, I click "Connect" and then the "Public" button on the new window. I get a new window, but it doesn't have any buttons or icons. (Same as with the main toolbar when I launched the app.)

Mac OSX.3.2. Anybody have a suggestion?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 20 January 2005 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you tried passive mode? Your firewall might well be the problem.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 20 January 2005 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Technical question about directory names: My name comes up as part of the path for my music files. I tried changing my name on my account, but while that displays the name on the icon, when you actually look at the file path and name, my actual name is still there. If that is comprehensible, I'd like to know what I can do to change my name on the path or whatever.

Like, right now it says:

C:\Documents and Settings\Real Name\My Documents\My Music\Beck

but I want it to say:

C:\Documents and Settings\RS LaRue\My Documents\My Music\Beck

How can I make that change?

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 22 January 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 22 January 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

move your music to a folder you can call C:\MUSIC.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've tried the port-forwarding thing but have found that I can only get other peoples' file lists only when I'm in passive mode. But then people can only dl from me when I'm in active mode. So I've been switching back and forth.

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Saturday, 12 February 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, nath, like I load up dc+ and then I'm really confused as to how to point the program to ilx.wh3rd.net then I can't ever connect to the hub, can't find it, doesn't show up, whatever. I've not tried it w. other hubs (i.e. the dc+ shell comes with preset hubs it's pre-identified.) (I'm at home at the moment, i.e. not aberdeen, but I'll try these presets when I get back.) (don't hold out much hope neither though!) (s'a shame.)

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 12 February 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

It doesn't show up, cozen, you have to put the link (or address, i don't know how you call it) in the bar underneath (i think) and then connect. it's a hidden hub so you won't see it in the public ones, i think. sorry, i think think think because i don't have dc connect on at the moment...
