The green cards asking if you’re involved in terrorism, or crime; somehow the request whether you were involved in the German government 1933-1945 carries a different piquancy, in its political specificity, its tabbed years.it feels like a roundabout route to Manhattan, for the great landmarks are visible on the skyline out left from the start, and wedrive away from them, plunge into stilled Jersey traffic, slow roads at eight o’clock like it was still rush hour. Towers, freeways, factories coming and going on either side; cars with their number plates declaring New Jersey / Garden State, don’t remind me,or occasionally a more specific New York / Park Avenue. The radio is on, dumb perpetual news whose casters also read the adverts: you enter a world and find how fixed it is on these local vexations, local news and chances. It may be hard to realize at the instant but this is as vivid asanything that will happen: the first New York hour is the epiphanic centre of it all.

Right from the start I couldn’t take my eyes off her.She was the most erotic thing I’d ever seen. She wasfair skinned and golden haired, full-blood Italian. The air was suddenly filled with banana leaves. Westarted talking and my head started to spin. Cupid’sarrow had whistled by my ears before, but this time ithit me in the heart and the weight of it dragged meoverboard.
Unbelievable bathos of that paragraph’s end: ‘She wasjust my type’.
Tom & Jerry’s: ambiguity of the name, queerinstability of local knowledge. Who would have thoughtso many different bowls existed with ‘Tom & Jerry’ onthem? The reasons are unfathomable. Scrabble is inuse; only game in town is count the numbers for theforthcoming FAPs. Everybody has plans round here."
I was in that part! Alas I am not fair skinned and golden haired :( That must have been the booze.

the man Hand, content with the release of funds, a pinnacle of out of state pioneering spirit, leads us to pastures new, a shared bar tab, the possibility of comradeship in funds, yank entrepenueralism played out in miniature, not quite Duke returning from defeat to wealth, but something,
again, in a misty cab, a sense of wonder pervades, as another tip must be paid, entitlement must be serviced, for the mere driving of a cab, through these mean streets (mean! yet the palms must be greased!). One wonders, who shall last longer, an englishman abroad, or his depleted funds? not quite Tyson and Holyfield, but a sepian Joyce, i shouldn't wonder
As the sun fades, and the smokers line up outside (like White Hart Lane in 1981, not quite Ardliles and Villa, but a yank tribute?), i wonder, is it possible to even sleep here. if so, i'm not sure how, is it required to tip the guardian of the land of nod, not quite Irving's Winkle, but greater, surely, greater than Pleat's Anderton?

Sparkly top hat/tiara sounds like appropriate Pulp in NYC wear! Right? Lord knows I can't fit in with the Misshapes crew, so best to go in the oppostire direction. I feel worse for all the other ILXors, who'll have to wear star cutouts on their shoulders and make their bodies disappear.. heh. Would that I had Photoshop or some alternative so could cross off muppets and put ILXors!

come on rrrobyn, you really ought to go + see The Pines -- they haven't played in two years and it's their only American show (North, Central or South) ever !!!
and I look forward to seeing you in any case.
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 00:44 (fourteen years ago)
bene_gesserit should probably go too unless she dislikes "folk-pop"
She's going to be at Pulp with us! Sorry :(

Pulp is the 11th? Pines are the 12th. Problem solved.

― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 03:36 (fourteen years ago)
They are one of the best bands of their era !!!
Surely not to be missed !!
[The A-Set, this is, not the Pines, who are also the above, obviously]
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 09:25 (fourteen years ago)
Anyone going will enjoy this, The Pines are great.
― Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 09:52 (fourteen years ago)
aislers set are great, i wanted to see black tambourine as well but that sold out pretty early! i'm going to try to go to this!
honestly i've never gotten into the softies, i don't know why.
― bene_gesserit, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 14:54 (fourteen years ago)
That must be one of the nicest things MDC has said since the last time he thought Robbie Keane was a good player.
bene_gesserit, BT are playing another night, at Maxwells in NJ - did you know about that? It's on Monday 9th April. Let me know if you're interested in that.
Softies don't always thrill me but on balance I think they're a good thing and I do feel rather hono[u]red to share a bill with them.
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:41 (fourteen years ago)
Pinefox in NYC from tonight. Look forward to seeing a few people.

― MIke Love Battery (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 5 April 2012 02:48 (thirteen years ago)
I am in the basement of the Chelsea International Hostel. People walk small dogs through the sunny day outside.
Mary, that sounds delightful but I have to be in DC, or rather in VA maybe, as Curmudgeon says. I will be down there till the 9th.
Rosemary, we will have to aim to meet on the 10th.
My mobile is not working here at all, among various other problems.
― the pinefox, Thursday, 5 April 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)
Mobile is working now.
Pinefox in DC, from tomorrow afternoon till Monday.
NYC plans for next week still in process for anyone interested and available.

― Michael Jones, Friday, 6 April 2012 03:51 (thirteen years ago)
Mike: no, new number is working and I got your text to that! I can't reply to you much as I only have a handful of texts' worth to UK phones, but, apparently, effectively unlimited texts to US numbers.
Rosemary: I am lunching on 11th with an academic from Cardozo - I put him that day cos you were on the 10th!
Mookieproof, I am playing NYC on the 12th, Thursday. I will be at Bell House, Brooklyn, also on Tue and Wed, and at Maxwells NJ on Monday, and probably Rock Shop Friday. I am not sure what yeungling is.
Horseshoe, when you say 'here' do you mean DC or NYC? I am in DC today-9th, then NYC 9th-15th. I would like to see you.
― the pinefox, Friday, 6 April 2012 11:02 (thirteen years ago)
I am getting a train to DC at 11 so you can see me off at Penn Station if you like.

We are!! So, on the 11th Finefine Music, Bene Gesserit (formerly belllabs), myself and some irl friends of ours are meeting at a bar near RCMH before the Pulp show. I know it'a a busy time and that area isn't likely to be one that people just happen to meet in but if anyone would like to come out and have a drink post work it would be very cool to get a chance to meet some of you. :)
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Friday, 6 April 2012 13:24 (thirteen years ago)
PF: How long is your lunch?? We could meet in the afternoon.
ENBB: I will meet up! Well, I guess it depends what is going on at work and what day off I get.

― curmudgeon, Friday, 6 April 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)
TR: Would be cool if you could! Let me talk to FFM and get and idea of when we're going to be there and I'll give an update over the weekend or early next week by which point maybe you'll know if you have Wednesday off. :)

Nice meeting you last night at Artisphere Pinefox. What a small world--singer and Chickfactor co-editor Pam B*rry, who I know from way back when, has a, uh, connection to an ilxer.

― wolf kabob (ENBB), Saturday, 7 April 2012 18:37 (thirteen years ago)
Thanks for listening and saying hello, Curmudgeon!
Mike was at Artisphere but he's five or six players away from making a real challenge. In many ways he's 30 points off the pace.
Horseshoe, are you leaving NYC? A pity as I will be back tomorrow.
Brooklyn botanics on Saturday sounds OK idea to me, can we muster a team to do that?
Rosemary, let's meet on Tuesday afternoon then - at 3 maybe?
I saw a Yeungling last night at Artisphere!
― the pinefox, Sunday, 8 April 2012 17:25 (thirteen years ago)
I have to work Tuesday, there are buyers coming that day.
Are you free Wednesday after your lunch?
I heard the Pines on the radio this evening.
― tokyo rosemary, Sunday, 8 April 2012 23:37 (thirteen years ago)
I was there with the kids for The Pines on Friday (took them home around 9) and without the kids for the duration on Saturday. Not sure if I'll have any babysitting cover for the NJ and NYC BT/Pines shows so may not see those. But that's OK, Fri/Sat were great and that's as much live music as I expected to see on this trip. Anything else is a bonus, Brian.
― Michael Jones, Sunday, 8 April 2012 23:52 (thirteen years ago)

I'm looking forward to Thursday. I'm sure the Chickfactor shows have been fabulous so far!
I signed up for an event Saturday afternoon. Maybe I could skip it, but I would feel guilty.
Is anyone interested in going to this?http://www.mercuryloungenyc.com/event/101891
I'm interested in Coasting, and just finding out about Chain and the Gang. I have this feeling the Pinefox would not approve of these bands.
― youn, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 02:22 (thirteen years ago)
The shows have indeed been good so far. Tonight in Brooklyn contained so many people I knew, it was like walking into a surprise party.
actually I think a highlight tonight for me was telling Linton about my admiration for The Aislers Set. my opinion seemed to be slightly more appreciated than I might have imagined.

I would like that. It would definitely improve my quality of life.

Man, such a pity to be missing all this. Also I am all 'hey wait a minute' at this Pam B*rry revelation above. This is because I can't keep things straight in my brain half the time.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 15:09 (thirteen years ago)
I feel confident that Mr Raggett would have enjoyed Lorelei's DC set. Second song: an LP-faithful version of Pale Saints' 'sight of you'.

That is so nice of you to say, Laurel.
(If you have ever heard any of my records, I did most of the guitar playing on those, except the parts I outsourced to Vietnamese teenagers for cheap labour, so they pretty much show what kind of a guitar player I am.)
Mary, I think that did go on late. Loved your private eye's trenchcoat.
Would love to see you, Bene, but I am at a gig in Gowanus from about 9:30. Hoping to meet Mary and Robyn before that. In fact Robyn and I are planning to go to Central Park!

Got to hear a lot of Pinefox's "American" accent last night. Do we really sound so dumb?
― Virginia Plain, Saturday, 14 April 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)
Tape yourself and listen. I did that recently and didn't like what I heard. Also I was asking somebody about their German accent the other day and they put on a comedy American accent and asked if that was preferable.
― i just believe in memes (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 14 April 2012 20:37 (thirteen years ago)
I don't think we've met before and I don't post my photos. How would you recognize me?
No, I had been sick the day before and could not bear the thought of returning home after midnight. (The thought, the reality could have been more than bearable.)
If Anita O'Day and The Rest and the song about the gymnast were played then everything was in its place and all was right with the world, at that moment.
― youn, Saturday, 14 April 2012 20:58 (thirteen years ago)
You did not outsource for their talent? Maybe they are actually talented. Maybe they possess the talents of the grand minstrel singers and troubadours and saints and could speak in tongues and play with a bow and pluck with their fingers and whisper in your ear.
― youn, Saturday, 14 April 2012 21:06 (thirteen years ago)
Ha, I don't like listening to myself but I thought it was due to my voice, not my accent.
Youn, we have indeed met in Washington, d.c. Perhaps at that time I was posting under my given name (Mary).

― World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 15 April 2012 09:20 (thirteen years ago)
Doc, that would have been good. In this Central Park instance a particular emphasis was placed on 'Washington, D.C.'. I also heard the new LP for the first time on Friday in Spoonbill books in Williamsburg. Mary was telling me last night about your enduring movie enthusiasm and Carmen Miranda plans.
James R, haven't had those encounters this time but did find a wall graffitied with Green Lantern, and was in a NON-hipster cafe on 4th Ave Brooklyn where 'Life During Wartime' came on.
Mary thinks I think all Americans are jocks. I was really just talking about the way certain people might talk about BLACK TAMBOURINE, MAN, and how SMALL FACTORY JUST LIKE BROUGHT IT. I did one illustrative line of Don Draper yesterday and was touched that two Queens residents actually thought it sounded like him. But mostly I have been relying Michael Caine, though one of Mary's librarian colleagues high above Long Island City was keen to be reminded of David Brent.
