The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Clearly Carolina will win it all!

quincie, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

never bet against roy williams in march!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

haha

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Wake me up when Kansas doesn't get upset. Again.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Is Illinois still undefeated?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

no they lost 65-64 i the last game of the regular season a few days ago. to ohio state

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh man. That's gotta hurt.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

well going 29-1 sure beats going 1-29

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

I know, but I bet they were disappointed. I would've been.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Oakland's going dancing! Michigan reprazent! man I'm so psyched for the tourney this year. There have been some amazing games the last couple weeks.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

ST LOUIS REPRAZENT

as the host city anyway.

You can come stay in the spare room if you want.

The tourney is the weekend before election day, I will be so busy. :(

teeeny, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

FWIW - I would not pick against Connecticut. Yes, I'm biased (homestate pride wooooo), but they've been playing out of their gourd the last couple of weeks. Their soph point guard (Marcus Williams, NOT "Maurice" as Billy Packer referred to him during last weekend's Duke / Tarheel game) is doing a great job (leading the nation - !!! - in apg w/ 8.8 & also averaging double figures in ppg) (probably a better point than Taliek Brown ever was) (as if that's hard) (ungh), their front court (Charlie Villanueva / Josh Boone) is still monstrous even w/out Okafor (I'm pretty sure they're Top 5 nationwide in blocks), their scoring distribution is balanced, they've solid depth AND they've been missing one of their top scorers (Rashard Anderson) these past two weeks w/ a staph infection! And Rudy Gay - the kid with the condor-like wingspan and decent shooting touch - he's OK, too.

If someone can keep Sean May from getting the ball down low (or, more likely, if the point guards forget that Sean May is on their team), UNC is SOL.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

For the record, the only other team I've watched this year for a full game that's probably going to do something ("something" = "not one-&-out") in the tourney = Duke. (Haven't seen BC or 'Nova; Syracuse doesn't look all that tuff, tho that's because McNamara goes AWOL against UConn.) (Also, for a "good shooter", his numbers look crappy - McNamara's only hitting 30-35% of his shots!)

Can I still brag about picking the 'Cuse 2 years ago? & how about picking Georgia Tech to make the final last year?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Saluki fever commence!

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

I've watched about half their games, and Illinois will definitely be hard to beat. It's their championship to lose.

andrew s (andrew s), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Florida finally beat Kentucky last sunday in a squeaker. Should be a good loss going into the SEC tourney and make them a little more hungry than they have been. I'm hoping for no upsets and a final four appearance (for Tubby's sake).

Also EKU is making an appearance this year! Bracketology has them going first round against Duke.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

That EKU/Duke matchup would be a 14-3, I'm guessing? (Depending on how Duke fares in the ACC tourney, obviously.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Illnois has been simply stunning all season.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) I think it's 15-2 currently.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

UK/Louisville/EKU hurrah!

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I want to see a UK/Louisville elite eight matchup shut down the state.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Do you really think NC is still the team to beat considering Rashad McCant's health? Without McCants playing or at least playing as well as he was around the beginning of the year, their back court is a bit questionable and would be overmatched against Illinois.

The Illni backcourt is really, really tough and will tear apart any club whose point guard is not on the ball. I like Duke or Wake matching up against them more than NC, as they have a better back court. If Duke shoots the lights out behind the 3 line, they can beat anyone.

The tourney will probably be won by Arizona or Louisville, a team that is good that no body is picking to win it all.

It won't be Kentucky. Tubby Smith has done a great job getting that much defensive hustle and wins out of that club, but they don't have a single player that can drive to the hoop and they can be a fugly shooting squad. They win by getting other teams to turnover the ball.

earlnash, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

concerns:
1- illinois plays in indianapolis, chicago and st. louis. i do not want my alma mater to win, but playing all games within 3 hours of your zipcode is as close to home court advantage as you can get.

2- all of carolina's losses came on the road. their only big wins on the road were against schizoid maryland and an injured connecticut. i want carolina to win, but can they pull it off?

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

wake should be formidable. i watched them nearly melt down at home against duke (winning by 2 after being up big) and play like they didn't want to be there at illinois. when they are on, they are phenomenal. eric williams is outstanding. but i just don't know if they can come together as a team to play a full game of defense to get to the final four.

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

The Kentucky squad has some really streaky perimeter shooting. I'm thinking of starter Sparks specifically. When Sparks and/or Azibuke get hot it spreads the defense and the penetration goes nicely. When the perimeter is cold it gets *really* ugly and have to rely on turnovers. It's been a tale of two ball clubs most of the season.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

that should be read as:
wake *should* be formidable. *but*, i watched them...

(xpost)

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

John - technically, UConn was short a guy (maybe two), but IIRC they also turned the ball over 198 times, in every way possible (via UNC pressing, via telegraphed passes, via brain farts), & that went a loooong way towards UNC whuppin' them.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

ucon had 22 turnovers, 13 forced. they also 16 (!) blocked shots in that game. i don't mean to talk down your boys, more to raise the question about mine. UNC is a great team whom i love love love to watch. but their road sched makes me wonder how far they will go.

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Nine unforced turnovers is a buttload! (Isn't it?)

Yeah, UNC is fun to watch - I loved the Duke game on Sunday, but they looked very lost @ times, esp. in regards to recognizing how they were getting it done (INSIDE INSIDE INSIDE) & settling for questionable jumpers during a 5-6 minute stretch beginning the 2nd half. Esp. with Duke's Randolph starting off the half w/ 3 fouls - eff a jumper! Feed the big fella(s) inside, let them work on Shavlick (sic?), & get his dead ass out of the paint ASAP.

Of course, the more memorable UNC WTF? moment this year was the OTHER Duke game, where they seemingly dribbled out the clock down 1 or 2 w/ over 18 seconds left.

Also, can I bitch about the "rushing the court" thing again? UNC beating Duke = big whoop, even if Matt Doherty torpedoed Chapel Hill & this was their "big comeback", ESPECIALLY when the beating happens @ the Dean Dome & the home team has the higher rank. Get off the court, get back to drinking, & get over yrselves, plz. (I am lord of the NO FUN ZONE.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

agreed on the court rush. but what do you expect when fucking ESPN hands these kids pre-made signs promoting fucking TILT or (more insidiously) whatever game is next!?! they wanna be on tv, they'll do whatever it takes.

that duke loss was brutal. BRUTAL. 18 seconds and no shot. ugh. made me sick.

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

are we doing brackets?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

yes!

i hope illinois wins.
but i especially hope: KANSAS, duke, unc, uconn, syracuse DONT win.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Phil is now lord of the NO FUN ZONE.

Is Monmouth in it? I hope so.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

yeah, those guys can suck my dick. especially kansas because their head coach is so cute! even though he fat bitch for leaving illinois.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

i want duke to lose in first round. jj redick is fat bitch too, but also cute.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

One of those bitches is not fat like the other...

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

i hope illinois LOSES cuz they let a guy caught breaking into and stealing stuff from a student's apartment go unpunished. my alma mater -- class act.

i hope jj redick is so fucking tired from all the time he's going to have to play that he throws up airball after airball after airball.

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

what about oklahoma state who took that guy jameson curry who got arrested for moving like 10 tons of pot in north carolina? anyways, luther head said he was sorry and see look he's doing so well and staying out of trouble, and what about second chances, and hes from manley high school in chicago and then move to champaign with a bunch of farmboys who prolly leave their dorm rooms unlocked? shit bitch i would have done the same thing. and anyways luther head is kinda cute too.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

illinois ain't gonna win it - last one loss team to win it all: david thompson and nc state in 1974

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

indianapolis, chicago, st.louis - they're practically playing at home the entire tournament!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

even spookier trend though (i am giving away my supercrafty 2005 bracket strategy i fear): the majority of one-loss teams to go to the dance post-74 lost to the eventual champion.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

i just hope illinois doesn't get georgia tech or maryland in the 8/9 spot. that would suck.

otherwise i'll cry like in 1989. fucking glen rice. and sean higgins

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Yay 1989! Rumeal Robinson iz my hero! I think Illinois looks real real tough. Real tough. I'd like to think this is finally the year for Eddie Sutton, and I'll be rooting for the Cowboys, but I've seen them disappear in too many games this year. Something odd about that team. Who will be this year's Weber State? who will be this year's Harold Arceneaux?? I'm rooting for NIAGRA. Don't ask me why. I just want to root for NIAGRA. and Oakland of course. Detroit really blew it last night, poor dude couldn't make a free throw. Good game though.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

old dominion! i like their name

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

also, i hope michigan state loses in the first round. usually i try to support big-10 schools come tournament time, but i want them to be exposed for the giant fraud they are. have they beaten a ranked team in the last 2 years??

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

and how are people even talking about indiana making the tournament? they have 13 losses!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

well, they annihilated Wisconsin a couple weeks ago but that doesn't really count. I dunno, I don't see them going very far but they have definitely improved as the season's progressed. They had an absolutely brutal schedule early on.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

x-post re msu

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Go Terps Go. Please god, let them make the tourney.

I like Louisville and Wake and obv Illinois, and I agree the UCONN is playing great basketball going into the Tourney. I think Arizona will play well. We will see. There are several teams from the ACC and Big East that can beat anyone that have also lost some games, so look out. I'm going to the Big East tourney tomorrow - 4 games in a row. The perfect day!

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

is it at madison square garden?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

ooh there are $10 first round doubleheader tickets still left for that.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

So how long will Dickie V's "mid-majors get the shaft" tirade last this year? O/U is 10 minutes spread over 6 different segments. Not that I don't agree w/ what he's saying; I'm just fond / sick of his particular way of expressing his opinion on the topic - I esp. liked it the year Auburn made it in w/ a near-or-sub-.500 record, & he'd bang on the desk while yelling at Digger Phelps about some 35-2 MAAC team getting jobbed, spotlights shining off his melon like shooting stars or some shit.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

anyways, luther head said he was sorry and see look he's doing so well and staying out of trouble, and what about second chances, and hes from manley high school in chicago and then move to champaign with a bunch of farmboys who prolly leave their dorm rooms unlocked?

you go sit in your apartment while a bunch of guys rummage through your things. what're you gonna do, walk out and be like, "oh, hey! it's luther head! cool!"

i'm not talking about throwing him off the team. people have been suspended for much less on teams that gave a shit about ethics.

also, the way the champaign prosecuter handled it (basically, saying "well, son, do you want to be the steve bartman of this town? a lot of people sure would be upset") really pissed me off.

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

They had an absolutely brutal schedule early on

lessee, they played george washington, george mason, ucla, delaware state, nc asheville, wisconsin (green bay) ...oh, and duke. brutal, indeed.

pfft.

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

i'm not talking about throwing him off the team. people have been suspended for much less on teams that gave a shit about ethics.

he was suspended for four games. if you're not advocating throwing him off the team, wtf u want?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

my bad. i totally forgot about it in my annoyance.

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I am a Duke fan, and have been since I was 4 years old. It's like a right of passage growing up in rural NC, before you start kindergarden, you have to pick between Duke, State, and Carolina. And no WF please. I like our chances this year to get to the sweet 16 at least.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Also, I've met way too many Carolina fans in Chicago. I thought I was leaving that back in NC.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

why no WF?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

I've met way too many Carolina fans in Chicago.

ha ha. and so it shall remain until deng puts up some decent numbers for the bulls.

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

oh, and fuk duke.

john'n'chicago, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

I had a girlfriend in high school who was older and went off to Duke. I went down to visit for a weekend while still in high school and we went to see Duke vs. UCLA at Cameron. My mind was totally blown. I can't fathom not loving Duke after being there in the student section and witnessing that, it's like nothing else. I understand why people can't stand Duke. They're kinda like rooting for the Yankees. But damn if it all isn't so sincere and impressive when you're there.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

My 2005 Final 4: Southwest Arizona State, U and not Q, Mound View A&M, Yale

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

yeah I guess I was wrong on that Sparty schedule ... didn't look it up, was going from (faulty) memory. I thought they had faced two or three more ranked teams other than Duke in that initial stretch. I think I got them mixed up with the Wolverines, who did have it a bit tough. of course they've been a bit of a lost cause for years :(

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 10 March 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

I just saw this today: http://www.truthaboutduke.com/

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

i dont understand how some voters picked UNC as #1 this week. wtf

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

oof, looks like maryland's not going to make the tournament after losing to clemson today. oh well! though i probably would't be surprised if the committee still chose them over some 22-6 midmajor

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 10 March 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

so sad that the maryland inferiority complexes terps folded up like a travel cup. gary williams in the post-game press conference: 'this makes last year when we beat all their butts in greensboro that much sweeter.' sure it does, gary.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 11 March 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

fuck depaul lost too

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 March 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to the sec games tonight, great seats - three rows back from the court. i'm thinking of getting some louisville gear to piss off the uk fans.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

The amount of uk blue should be pretty overwhelming. Our local paper scolded the fans for flagging SEC tourney attendance in the past couple of years. Which is pretty incredible considering how dedicated and massive the fan base is. I expect the paper's challenge will be met in force.

Poor Vandy last night...

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

yeah atlanta's sorta referred to as 'catlanta' during the sec tourney, they own the dome.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

That's funny. I thought it was just local slang around here.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

well to be more accurate it is more 'kentucky owns the dome so much they call atlanta catlanta during the tourney'.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Tarheels are proving my on-the-road fears against Clemson today. Down 13 with 9 minutes to go...

john'n'chicago, Friday, 11 March 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

UNC dodged that one.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

hole-E shit. is it absurd to get so excited about beating freaking clemson?!? of course. but after 30 minutes of utter listlessness, NC has ridden a felton-led rally to victory. oh mang! phew!

john'n'chicago, Friday, 11 March 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

UNC gives me the hives.

UConn suuuuuuuuuuuuuucked tonight. To their credit, they nearly overcame an awful 1st half w/ their late run, but, man, you go 7-18 from the free-throw line, you deserve every bad break you get. (Also, 20% from 3 in 20 shots = checkout time is @ noon, come back real soon.) Kudos to McNamara, though, for actually taking the ball inside and working the mid-range runner. And Hakim Hakim Hakim. Hakim.

sweet. i'm totally in.

i'm about to settle in to watch ga-tech/duke. i think that ga-tech has more to prove than duke and as such will not fold...at least not so easily. four games in as many days makes it interesting, but duke's got less depth and is on its third. i pick ga-tech, not just out of hope, but with a degree of respect.

john'n'chicago, Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

wishful thinking on my part. it might help if Schenscher played more like he did yesterday. just cuz you're 7'1" doesn't mean you don't have to jump...

Wasn't reddick's fault, they can't help if they refs suck.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

louisville kind of got shafted. which is fine, i don't like them anyway.

also, someone explain to me why oklahoma (24-7) is a #3 while big east champion syracuse (27-6) is a #4 in the same region.

it's nice that chris paul's groin punch cost wake a #1.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 March 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

also, someone explain to me why oklahoma (24-7) is a #3 while big east champion syracuse (27-6) is a #4 in the same region.

maybe syracuse (like the rest of the big east) playing yawn-worthy nonconferece schedule, while oklahoma played at washington, at duke, uconn, minnesota, sw missouri st, at purdue.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 14 March 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

that Albuquerque bracket is INSANE! so many good teams.

Buffalo got robbed!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 March 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

okay, well maybe at purdue hurt their rpi more than it helped, but at least they schedule road games to other power conference schools.

that said, syracuse i think could make the final four.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 14 March 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

mmm. okay, that's a reason, although i disagree with it!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 14 March 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm pulling for UCLA to beat Texas Tech and Old Dominion over Mich. State

i have TT in my initial final 4

and syracuse

is there any reason to think Old Dominion will beat MSU in the opening round?

john'n'chicago, Monday, 14 March 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

other than MSU sux, i mean.

john'n'chicago, Monday, 14 March 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

No, that is pretty much the only reason I have.

Magic City (ano ano), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Tough games to pick:

1st Round-
Texas vs. Nevada
Villanova vs. New Mexico (NM is a very tough team to face as a 12 seed.)
Texas Tech vs. UCLA
Cincinnatti vs. Iowa

2nd Round-(if the matchups play out)
Georgia Tech vs. Louisville!!! (This one could be one of the better matchups in the tournament, as both teams like to run.)
Michigan St. vs. Syracuse
Wisconsin vs. Kansas

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

My intial rough draft bracket had Arizona, Wake, Duke, and Carolina in the final four. This obviously means I have watched too much ACC basketball this year.

Does anyone think it is possible for Arizona to beat Illinois?

Magic City (ano ano), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

no, i don't think arizona has the cohesion of illinois. right now, i don't think they get past osu.

so far i have vermont over syracuse and michigan state. that's the only big upset i have. it's based on 1) the syracuse game being close to home, 2) michigan state is over rated, 3) retiring coach brings out the best in his players.

john'n'chicago, Monday, 14 March 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

kansas/unc in the elite-8 would be so funny.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 14 March 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

My fantasy bracket has UK going through Duke and UNC to win in the finals versus Louisville.

I'm still tweaking but I've got upsets with UW-M over Alabama, Old Dom over Mich St. AND George Washington over Georgia Tech first round. Possibly Cuse over Duke in Sweet Sixteen... Excessive hand kneading continues.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Monday, 14 March 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

All I know is that, using my failsafe method of pulling picks out of my ass, I ended up looking like a total homer, which I might have to change.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 14 March 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I just noticed that I should probably go with New Mexico over Villanova for all inclusive 5/12 upset madness.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Monday, 14 March 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

George Washington over Georgia Tech
I had this and changed it. Then changed it back. Still pondering it.

Excessive hand kneading continues.
I have this too...

john'n'chicago, Monday, 14 March 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Vermont is a nice story, but Syracuse is tough, especially if McNamara is not sketchy at hitting the three.

I watched the New Mexico against Utah in the Big West final this past weekend, they are pretty big, athletic and physical on defense. I don't know much about Villanova, but they did beat Kansas back in January pretty good. NM's physical style still should be a good match up against a Big East squad.

There is also an ex-coach factor that can play in if Kansas and Illinois met in the final game. If the Salukis get on a run like they could also face their ex-coach in the Chicago Region.

Georgia Tech lost more games than they should this past season, but they still have most of the same crew from last year when they made a big run. I think they will get past the first round, but the matchup against Louisville is tight, as they are really similar teams.

Does anyone think Wake can actually make a run? Besides the team colors, they remind me somewhat like Purdue, which was a power in the Big Ten in the 80s/90s. Wake wins, does well in their conference and gets a good seed, but never really makes a run at the Final Four. They didn't even get far even with Tim Duncan!

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 14 March 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

I have Wake losing to U of L. More for the underseeding-chip-on-shoulder motivation factor of U of L than anything else.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

all these people picking Old Dominion over Michigan State pretty much ensures that MSU will win, so I've got them down.

the Vermont thing is more interesting to me .. have to think about this one a bit more.

but yeah New Mexico will beat Villanova. who the hell is Villanova? it's 2005 not 1985.

I also like Creighton over West Virginia. those are my only upsets for now.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

niagara over oklahoma!!!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

yes!!!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

who the hell is Villanova?

They should have beaten West Virginia but for a bad call in the Big East conference. They should have beaten BC at BC early in the year. They beat Pitt twice in two weeks. They crushed Kansas. Nighly beat UConn at Uconn. I do not see them losing til they play North Carolina.

john'n'chicago, Monday, 14 March 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

yeah but the Big East blows. and everybody crushed Kansas at some point this season didn't they? New Mexico will win that game with ease.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

yes, the big east totally blows. beating pitt? oooh, buckell did that too.

though the big10 totally blows lately too.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

uh, okay. simplemindedly, i figured that pitt, bc, uconn and even freaking west virginia and (bleh) notre dame make for a slightly tougher schedule than duquesne (my mom's alma mater), san diego state, byu, and unlv. my bad.

john'n'chicago, Monday, 14 March 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Former UConn asst Dave Laetio (sic) is the coach now - I think they won a few games in last year's tourney. And now they're going to the Big East (along w/ 95% of Conference USA). Wheeeee!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Randolph Childress was awesome. Didn't he break 100 points in a (three-game) ACC tournament? All I remember is the time he completely broke down a Carolina defender (Jeff McInnis?), motioned to him to get up, then drained a three in his jaw.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad they finally gave some time to Laettner's OTHER buzzer beater in that SC countdown (against UConn, the game after Tate George & Scott Burrell torpedoed the Elden Campbell / Dale Davis Clemson team) - THAT'S the one that killed me, esp. since, on the previous possession, Tate George lost the ball out of bounds.

After spending two hours last night, I was just like 'put any old thing down'. Kinda like Blount said, no matter how much I've spent on these things in years past I never come close to winning 'em. And honestly I really don't foresee too many crazy upsets or anything this year.

otoh .. UW-Milwaukee sure is giving Alabama what-for early on. Playing good D, knocking down the 3, doubling them up 24-11.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 17 March 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Pitt losing is bad for me but devastating for my daughter, who had them in the Final Four. At least she changed her mind last night about having them win the championship game!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 18 March 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

hah! yeah kinda. what did you think of the illini? i dont think they really played that bad - its just FDU played pretty well. actually, illinois couldn't rebound for shit, so hm. im not so optimistic about them anymore.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 March 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

yeah, you know, when it was a 1 point game at halftime I didn't think for one second the Illini would lose. These things happen all the time. I think they did a darn good job of asserting themselves in the 2nd half. They just needed to get limber. I think their biggest test will be Oklahoma St.

still can't believe Creighton lost the way that they did. ridiculous gaffe. I guess that's what separates the BCS schools from the smaller schools. the big guys don't make mental mistakes like that.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 18 March 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

chris webber?

yeah, of course i never doubted that illinois would win - but the way they played not so good during the b10 tournament, i was hoping they would come and whip FDU by like 30. the way #1 seeds are supposed to. and the walkons are supposed to be in the game with 6 minutes to go

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 March 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

Kathy Baker ("Picket Fences"), Bryan Brown
("The Thorn Birds"), Shannon Lucio (“The O.C.”) and Riley Smith ("New York Minute") star in this thriller about the invasion of a group of killer sharks on the Florida coast as a beach full of college co-eds enjoy their spring break from school.

College girl Danielle (Lucio) lies to her parents about her spring break plans and sneaks away to the fun-filled beaches of Florida with her two best friends. Soon after arriving, she falls for Shane (Smith), a handsome young blue-collar local working to raise college money.
While on vacation, Danielle seeks out her brother, Charlie (Wayne Thornley), a graduate student at the Florida Maritime Institute, whose thesis is on tiger sharks. Charlie cautions his sister to stay out of the water. He suspects that a large number of sharks are in the area due to a new artificial reef that was built to attract tourism.

Caught up in spring break fun, Danielle forgets her brother's warning. However, on an overnight boat trip she and her friends are viciously attacked by a group of sharks. As they find their way to safety on an islet, the reality of the danger hits them even harder when the body of a friend washes ashore.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Non-g00gled answer: you can't hold onto the ball for more than 5 seconds if you're not being actively defended.

g00gled answer: no help @ all.

UConn needs to stop dicking around and git r done. (And, boy, I hope quoting that Cable Guy asshat doesn't jinx 'em.)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

hey, what is the 5 second rule?

you only have 5 seconds to inbound

john'n'chicago, Friday, 18 March 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

thanks but i think david.r had the response i was looking for

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

you can't hold onto the ball for more than 5 seconds if you're not being actively defended

if you are being "closely guarded" in the front court (you can tell this is the case if the ref is counting--if enough distance is established, he'll spread his hands):

you have five seconds to hold the ball. then, you can dribble, which gives you five more seconds. then if you stop dribbling, you get five more seconds. if at any time you get enough distance from the defender, the five seconds starts over. (obviously you still only get one dribble.) it's supposed to reward good defense/prevent stalling, so if you are in the act of blowing by your defender with 4.9 seconds, it's not likely to be called.

if you're not being closely guarded, you can hold the ball forever (or until the shot clock expires, rather).

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 18 March 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Yahoo! is so messed up - if you're looking for up-to-date standings, check out the Scenario Generator. Right now, the Shamgods have only gotten 2 wrong, w/ Stence & his old skool Cardinal love-in 1 behind, and John'n'Chicago 1 behind him. 6 are tied @ 19, including yours truly.

I hope McNamara goes 5-20, and Syracuse eats it.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

I was going to say something about the officiating and the thugs in Cinci, but OMG WEST VIRGINIA!

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Sunday, 20 March 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Sunday, 20 March 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

Double overtime~! best game of the tourney.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

DOUBLE OVERTIME

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

what was the over/under on this game?

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

WEST VIRGINIA I LUV U SO MUCH RIGHT NOW

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

151 I think -- would've been over in regulation (and that's a high number to begin with!)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

holy shit, the wake forest asst coach has perhaps the ugliest tie ive ever seen!!!!

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

downey .. yikes.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

incredible, whatta game

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

well that's 2 of the final four out for me. I never should have trusted Wake to even get past Louisville (or, haha, TEXAS TECH)

why did CBS / NCAA schedule 4 games at the same time tomorrow instead of staggering them throughout the day?? idiocy.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

SO. MUCH. CARNAGE.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

well my brackets are killed now, but HAIL MOUNTAINEERS anyway!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i'm gonig to be fucking pissed if they show the damn wisconsin game instead of the duke game. I need a sattelite feed back to NC.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 20 March 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

did anyone see how oklahoma only had THREE assists in the entire game iin their loss to utah? they had the same number of blocks as assists.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

Rochester lost to Wisconsin Stevens-Point in the Div III final :( :(

looks like this is the year of Wisconsin.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 20 March 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

i realize cleveland is only a few hours from morgantown, wv, but i just love how a neutral court can tilt so heavily in favor of an upset, any upset. the wake cheerleaders had this overwhelmed look in their eyes, never mind the players.

as much as i dislike chris paul with 8.7 seconds left in the first overtime, after he fouled out, he showed what a leader he is. paul was right next to skip prosser as the coach was coming up with a play. strickland was doubled over, exhausted, maybe already defeated. paul reached over and gave him a little smack on the chin, like, "stand up and listen, man, this game ain't over." then it goes to double overtime!

also, eric williams! when the camera caught him in the congratulatory line after the game, i swear he was genuinely happy for the west virginia guys. it was like he knew their happiness and, despite his loss had a smile on his face, like "can you believe we just went through that together?!?"

john'n'chicago, Sunday, 20 March 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

first double dribble called on a team i was rooting against all tournament

andrew s (andrew s), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

holy shit!

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

this is insane

andrew s (andrew s), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

villanueva getting a rebound out of that scramble, scoring... i thought it was over. hodge is a machine right now.

john'n'chicago, Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

i actually like the 1-4-3 game scheduling because this way we get to see at least one complete game. i dunno about everywhere else, but the nyc metro has been getting fragments of everything.

andrew s (andrew s), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

AND DOWN GOES UCONN

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

that was incredible!

john'n'chicago, Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

go wisconsin! everyone is doing their best to make the big 10 look good.

andrew s (andrew s), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Five words for UConn's teams going forward:

DEFEND ONE THREE POINT SHOT

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

UW Milwaukee all the way!

Seriously, I larfed at first, but after seeing just how friggin PASSIONATE they played, I'm starting to get on this bus myself.

THIS is why I didn't do any bracket...because I knew it would be FCUT by now!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

i was about to write a scathing denunciation of cbs for not showing me the SIU-OK state game, but then it magically came on. i don't matter what the score is; nothing can save villanova-florida from being an incredibly boring game.

andrew s (andrew s), Sunday, 20 March 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

gah, siu was doing so well....

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

i do like the cowboys in this game, but am still hoping the salukis can play it pretty close for the good of the state of illinois as a whole.

andrew s (andrew s), Sunday, 20 March 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

although a gradual process is probably best for SIU's move to basketball powerhousedom. any sudden moves & the kids will burn carbondale to the ground.

andrew s (andrew s), Sunday, 20 March 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

oh well.. nice try salukis

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

god, in Chicago they're giving us freakin Bucknell / Wisconsin instead of that great Louisville / Georgia Tech matchup. what a joke. sorry Matt, but FUCK WISCONSIN.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

please join me in cheering mississippi sate to victory...

john'n'chicago, Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

ugh, i hate the midwest in march.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

I just had to buy the yahoo team package to listen to the stream online.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

no offense taken, Stormy, because I AM NOT IN CHARGE OF YOUR FREAKING CABLE SYSTEM, and if you don't want to watch two very good but not glitzy sexified teams then go do some gardening

come on Tucker, so what if you're being quadruple-teamed, you can do it

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

id rather watch any of the other games than Duke/Ms.State.... blegh

also, im very happy that the Big East has lost its 4 top teams by the 2nd round. ha-ha.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

speaking of quadruple teaming, you'd think lawrence roberts could maybe kick it out instead of going up for a layup with 4 guys on him.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

on the other hand, now that they've switched over the louisville/ga tech game, DAMN louisville is playing like they could beat the timberwolves or the blazers

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

yeah, wow, they are impressive...

and with Wake now out, have a great shot at coming out of that region

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

I think this is a GREAT tournament, one of the best I can remember. And I'm already out of it (god damned Sooners), so I can say that. Is it just the upsets that make a great tourney, or is it memorable games, or big stars emerging, or what?

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

i think everyone's lost at least 1 final four pick. between wake forest, kansas, uconn, syracuse, gonzaga, oklahoma...

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

One, three, the two teams you picked to play for the championship, what's the difference?

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

I had LSU in the finals, he he.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Please note, that each year, I pick Duke to win it all, and then pick pretty randomly for the rest. That's how the ditz in Marketing always wins the office pool.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

this tournament seems to be featuring lots of missed dunks and botched alley-oops

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

holy shit am i sick of those same goddamn television ads. enterprise will pick me up? even if i'm at a place that has a generic banner hanging that says REPAIR SHOP? i vow not to turn my tv on again until thursday night.

john'n'chicago, Monday, 21 March 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

i really would like to see the louisville/washington match

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

A note to everyone who hates UW-Madison because they play "boring basketball": we'll talk again when that is even remotely relevant.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

oh come on though. they do play boring basketball. not as bad as previous years, but i'd still much rather see louisville, washington, illinois, north carolina play. but i still want wisconsin to do well.

i think its odd that in all the articles in the national media mentioning the bruce pearl "turning in" illinois for the deon thomas bit, they forget to mention that nothing was actually proven, but the ncaa got illinois for "lack of institutional control", and that bruce pearl is a bitch. i want illinois to win by 40.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

and that the enterprise high school reunion "moose" character is also in the capital one no hassle credit card commercials with david spade. i want to scratch his face off.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

Phil I'm not disagreeing with you about who you want to watch, it's fine. I just think it's funny that people HATE (yes that word is used) a good team for their fair, clean, perhapsalittleboringandwhite style of play. I mean, I used to hate the Pistons because Laimbeer and Rodman would try to hurt opponents, but the fact that the team itself played tough physical perhapsalittleboring ball wasn't the issue. And I loved Dumars anyway.

Whatever, doesn't matter.

As far as the Bruce Pearl issue: whatever, Illinois dudes, your guys were cheating and he told (took the bullet for the head coach) and has suffered for it for 15 years. Let it go, lest ye become the true bitches.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

But the NCAA cleared Illinois of all charges regarding Deon Thomas. So they weren't cheating. But you know the NCAA - they can't start a huge investigation and come up empty handed, so they got "lack of institutional control". It ended up really killing the Illinois program for years - losing all momentum from the Flyin' Illini teams, and costing recruits like Juwon Howard and LaPhonso Ellis. How do you forget something like that? And how are some people casting Pearl as the high-minded victim here - he taped the conversation without Deon's knowledge, and pretty much entrapped him. And did some shady things too, like paid Deon's closest friend to send him reports on his every move.

"Pearl asked me, 'Deon, I heard you got $80,000 and a Blazer from Illinois,''' Thomas recounted. "I said, 'Where did you hear that?' Pearl's response was, 'I heard it through the grapevine.' My response was, 'Yeah, OK.' That was it.''

He said he was "completely shocked'' when he later was requested to attend a meeting with NCAA officials in Chicago and learned about the tape. "I knew I had been set up,'' Thomas said.

In an exclusive interview with the Sun-Times "because I want to clear my name,'' Thomas claimed that Pearl had offered to "double any offer you get from any other school'' to sign with Iowa. Thomas insisted Illinois didn't many any illegal offers.

Thomas also claimed Pearl showed up in Amsterdam while the Simeon team was participating in an international tournament. He said Pearl gave him $100, drove him and three teammates around town in a rented car and paid for their lunch. Pearl denied the allegation.

Thomas' mother claimed that Pearl threatened to make public her drug dependency if her son didn't go to Iowa.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

do you know what they eventually got "busted" for?

1. Arranging for high school coaches to purchase tickets to the 1989 Final Four. Also getting tickets for recruits.
2. Arranging special financing deals for three athletes to purchase cars.
3. Visiting a recruit a few too many times.

three years probation...

This guy breaks down the Louisville/Washington game in excrutiating detail. Too bad I live in Chicago and have to watch the illni.

also, this thread from a MSU forum cracked my shit Up.

john'n'chicago, Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

i ordered another bacon & extra cheese pizza and going to stay in all nite and watch college basketball.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 March 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

So.... Louisville is looking really good. Crushing a #1 seed and looking hungry for more the whole time... I'm looking forward to their matchup with Illinois.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Friday, 25 March 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 March 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

Damn I've got AZ/Ok.St. Good game though. I should have went to a damn sports bar.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 25 March 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

i'd rather be watching az/okla.st!!

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 March 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

Both of the night games are great. It's a shame that I can't flup back and forth, but WV/Tech should end before AZ/Okla St.

Insane turnover-block sequence there to keep WV's lead.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 25 March 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Flup? Christ.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 25 March 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

holy shit, i lied. the last minute has been crazy! that TO then the block then the offensive rebounds then 20 missed layups/tipins! AAAAAAAAIE

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 March 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

I'd rahter be watching WVU/TTech -- only 30 SECONDS LEFT ARRGHH!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 25 March 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

Cowboys up 4!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 25 March 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

i cant decide who i'd rather have win. oklahoma state or arizona. whoever illinois would match up better with. though last time illinois was #1 seed with frank williams, brian cook - they lost in the regional finals to arizona. that sucked

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 March 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

West Virginia to the Elite Eight! Oklahoma State is the only one of my Final Four left standing. My slim hopes of winning my bracket pool are going to get pretty dire if they lose.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 25 March 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

uhhh... who else was your final four??

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 March 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

i badly need duke to not make it to the final 4 to have a chance at anyhing i'm in. i was out & missed all of tonight's games. probably good because it sounds like i'd still be having a fit if i'd seen the way the TT game worked out.

andrew s (andrew s), Friday, 25 March 2005 07:22 (twenty years ago)

Bogut is a CHUMP.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Saturday, 26 March 2005 05:33 (twenty years ago)

hey phil-two, are you ready to admit that maybe the big 10 wasn't so shitty this year after all? that maybe it was, y'know, parity, with good defensive teams beating the holy shit out of each other all year?

haha! hey, i love me some big ten - and im really happy that we have three in the elite 8!! but i still think the big 10 does't have the depth it used to have. the bottom half is really really bad. but yay midwest!!!!

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 26 March 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

OKAY THEN! ROCK ON!

(you're right about the depth issue...but name a conference that really doesn't have the same problem)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 26 March 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

BOGUT BOGUT BOGUT

One of last week's games (might've been round-of-32) featured Kevin Harlan (or Tim Brando, his slightly less annoying clone) & Mike Gminski bestowing praise upon BOGUT. "BOGUT is dangerous because he's got an inside-outside game!" "BOGUT with the nice bounce pass!" "BOGUT with the cold fusion proof!" "BOGUT actually layed hands on that quadrapelegic (sic), and now she can walk!" "BOGUT! Hung like a Trojan horse!" etc. It was especially great to have them blow smoke up his small intenstine when, for example, he'd make a pass at the top of the key to someone, and they'd pass to the guy going baseline beautifully for a layup, and the announcers would praise BOGUT, because without his dipshitty little dumpdown to a wideopen guy, that other unsung guy wouldn't have been able to make the actual play. "BOGUT does the little things!" Yeah, like go 4-13 from the field, you schmucks.

Utah plays like they ate bad Mexican food. Boo hiss.

BOGUT BOGUT BOGUT

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 26 March 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

david so otm. in that game they talked about bogut should have had more assists, but his damn teammates kept missing the shots he set up and fucking up his stats. bogut's going to suck in the nba.

I love me some big ten - and im really happy that we have three in the elite 8

but then again, if wisconsin and michigan state make the final four, and illinois doesn't - i'll die.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 26 March 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

whoa west virginia

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 26 March 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

man, it's gotta be disconcerting to the defense when all conventional wisdom re: tall guys beyond the 3pt line is just Whooosh gone. Nuts.

john'n'chicago, Saturday, 26 March 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Watching this game gets me so excited about the Big East next year. I'm glad there's a team like West Virginia to keep me excited about the tournament.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Saturday, 26 March 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

hey, in my other yahoo!pickem set (Tigermilkers), i have 69 points (had wisconsin, mich st in elite 8, and UW-M into sweet16), and am #14 in the "Fans of Duke" group. i jumped like 700 places upwards since im prolly the only one there who had duke out in the sweet 16. hee-hee

Totally. The chances of the Big East scheduling them twice next year are about 99%, imho.

wow, i think this is the most exciting tournament i've ever seen. i haven't lost my shit like that over a sporting event since the chicago bears vs 49ers game in 2001 when the bears forced overtime with an onsidekick then hail mary, then mike brown intercepted that pass for a TD in overtime. it's 4:44am now, and i'm going to sleep 12 hours - just in time to watch more game tomorrow. yay march.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 27 March 2005 08:45 (twenty years ago)

john'n'chicago, Monday, 28 March 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

i don't want any of these teams to win!

you suck.

kidding.

illinois-louisville at my house, saturday - bring booze.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

i've got nothing against louisville except that i hate rick pitino.
i've got nothing specific against ill/mst (although it's annoying that paul davis looks perpetually on the edge of tears) but i'm institutionally opposed to the big ten.
i actually kind of like this carolina team (apart from mccants, whom i loathe), but that doesn't mean i can root for them. and though i respect roy, i kind of want him to continue to fall short.

guess i'll root for the spartans.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

fandom is so driven by hatred!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

why all the pitino hate?!?!?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

I loved it when Sparks got that three and immediately rushed over to Packer at the press table and started shouting at him. hahaha.

Poor Chuck Hayes. The rebounding breakdown in 1OT will haunt this team for a long time.. This young team is going to be an absolute monster for the next couple of years, but I feel so bad for Chuck right now. Such a good guy and all around great player. He never got to a final four and was one game short of setting a new all-time consecutive games started record. But Izzo was right about the only X factor between the two teams being the level of experience and the Spartans proved it.

I'm routing for Pitino and the Cards all the way at this point! And stranger still is I don't feel the slightest bit awkward about it!

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

when i was a kid and pitino was at providence, i sat near their bench when they came to town to play pitt. and he came across as a real prick. i suppose you could say this about a lot of coaches, but still...

via the transitive property, i also hate billy donovan (as a coach)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

chuck hayes shouldn't feel nearly as bad as the arizona wildcats!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I was torn up when all the seeds below 8 were eliminated. On the bright side, Duke and Kentucky have been eliminated, so life has its little consolations. MSU v Illinois in the finals.

Aimless (Aimless), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I think any of the four remaining teams can win it all. I'm pulling for Illinois to win it all beating Michigan State.

I want to see another Roy Williams tear filled angst press conference. I will never get enough of those. Patino has enough of an ego without winning another national title, his hair however is bulletproof. I like the fact that Bruce Weber seems half punch drunk and giggly through every interview. It is a nice change of pace to some of these coaches. Tom Izzo seems like a class act, but I fear MSU turning into a superpower and upsetting the balence of basketball in the midwest if he wins another title.

UK is going to be freakin' loaded next year. They will probably the pre-season #1, as I figure a couple of those NC players will turn pro.

earlnash, Monday, 28 March 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Izzo is a class act. Front page of the Herald today has a photo of Izzo consoling Chuck Hayes.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I can hardly speak ill of these 4 teams, and this tournament. Am pulling for the Spartans because of familiarity and proximity, but I'm honestly just getting a major kick outta how exciting the games are.

...but my pre-tourney pick (Louisville) is still my pick to win it all.

quincie, Monday, 28 March 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

fandom is so driven by hatred!

so true! kansas losing in the first round, while Illinois going to the final four is the best scenario i could have imagined. i wonder what bill self is thinking right now. sucka.

and duke losing to a big-10 team in the sweet16 was nice as well. and the big east = sucking again. and the ACC sucking too. Ha!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Ha - that'd be funny if the defending NCAA Champion came from the Big East AGAIN next year. (Go Pitino's hair!)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

pwned. :(

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Phil, don't frown - the Big East loves you!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

last night, i dreamt MSU lost (to whom, i dunno) when a desperation three bounced off paul davis' flat head and went straight into the bucket at the buzzer. i think the ball had rolled down the court and hit someone's clown-sized shoe before caromming off davis or something...

john'n'chicago, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

fuck! i just bought my non-refundable non-changeable ticket from nyc to chicago... on april 4th at 9pm.. which is the same time as the national championship game!!! FUCK :(

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

UGH. my wife just informed me her friend is having a wedding party saturday night at 6:00 Central Time. she tells me this whilst i'm staring at her slack jawed with my 16 year old Carolina baseball cap sitting on my head. she doesn't even much like this person!! aaargghhh.

john'n'chicago, Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

OMG I just walked into someone's office and they have final four tickets JUST SCATTERED ACROSS THEIR DESK.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

weirdly enough, i'm working on a story right now about the illinois basketball team, for the white sox web site (wtf?!?).

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Holy cow, the end of the NIT championship game was amazing! both teams trade three pointers in the last 10 seconds. crazy.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Um, its 3:14PM. The Road to the Final Four is supposed to be on CBS now. But it's not.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 2 April 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

oh well, at least louisville put up a good fight (and probably had phil shaking in his jockeys for a bit). more than i can say for michigan state. next year.

tomorrow, opening day of baseball! five weeks, kentucky derby! i love spring.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 April 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

i only saw the first half of each game, which looks like it would have been the correct decision had it been an actual choice.

andrew s (andrew s), Sunday, 3 April 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

i am so ready for this game to begin. i'm gonna be pacing the floor in front of the TV cartoon stylee wearing a groove in the wood, til it starts... then i'm gonna sit on the coffee table and lose my mind.

john'n'chicago, Monday, 4 April 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

That last game felt like someone punching me in the arm over and over and I'm not even a sportsfan! I felt like I just KNEW UNC was going to win from the first minute or so of the game. It's all my fault!!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)
