Resident Evil 4

It didn't look like there was a thread for this yet! But a few mentions elsewhere.

I got up really early this morning and went to go get this. The guy at the counter had a punisher T-shirt and gave me a special limited edition case because apparently i was the first to buy it from there or something. He also said i'd enjoy it.

I've clocked about 3 hours gametime now and i'm just gearing up for a 2nd go at the first proper boss (a gigantic..uh...thing!). So far the game is fantastic though.

Anybody else playing/played it?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

RE4! I finished it a couple of weeks ago, it was my favorite gaming experience of the current console generation for sure. I haven't played anything since (except some Mega Man and Sonic collection) because I don't know what could follow it up!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I got through the game just fine (the difficulty level is PERFECT), but my complete uselessness at the shooting gallery game and the bonus games make me think that I'm actually not very good. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

OMG, they should make multiplayer RE4 where one player is human and the other player(s) controls the zombie villagers!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah the difficulty level is just fine for me.

My eyes hurt though. I haven't played a game that intensely for a while. I didn't notice any loading really as well, which is nice.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

God i am so English. The only time i've felt scared so far is when it started raining. I was all like "oh shit, now there's a storm".

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Haha. Yeah, there's a bit where you return to the village square except it's REALLY dark and rainy (and bear-trappy and zombiey) that was one of the scariest parts of the game for me.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

I didn't figure out the shooting-bear-traps thing til like halfway through the game.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

YOU CAN SHOOT THE BEAR TRAPS?!?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Now I feel better.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Gah, where was my head.

Btw, I still feel oddly guilty about getting through the last three or four boss fights solely on the basis of the rocket launcher.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

i can't wait til i can afford that. I always almost shoot the weapons guy to death because he looks so damn creepy.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Haha! But what if you need to come back to him?! And why is he Australian?!?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

The rocket launcher is way less fun than the shotgun, which takes the place of the Doom shotgun as best video game gun ever, or the fully pimped out handgun. Max firing speed + max ammo capacity + max firepower = the crunkness.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah the handgun is awesome. I like to just carry that around and pretend that Leon = Jack Bauer (from 24).

Did anybody else kill the wolf at the beginning that looked like it needed help? I was scared that it'd bite me so i unloaded a clip at it.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

That's fucked up. Puppyshooter.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Also it shows up and helps out with the first boss fight. Only, you know, if you didn't shoot it.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

You're a very bad man, Hari.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, you're sick.

I felt really bad after shooting the cows. And chickens.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I shot a couple chickens, I couldn't get the cows to die, but i didn't want to waste shotgun bullets, so maybe that works better. I tried to hobble one by shooting it in the leg with the handgun but it didn't work.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

That was good thinking though, it ensures that it can't chase after you.

Zombie-cows were a huge missed opportunity in RE4.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

My first instinct was to try and tip the cows!

Also, I did pop the merchant in the head once but it was right after I had saved so I just resetted and he's still there in my game. It's not worth killing him, he just dies and then you don't have a merchant in that location anymore.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Zombie-cows are a huge missed opportunity in several areas of human endeavour, not just RE4, dude.

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 March 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Touche!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I thought that there must be some way i could ride the cows in the first village. I spent a good 15-20 minutes trying to find out how.

Also:

I am at the bit where you have to choose what path to take: Loads of people or that giant thing.

What does ILX advise?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

I am disappointed this isn't a picture thread, hari.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

The various panicked looks of Hari Ashurst while he is playing Resident Evil 4 (coming soon!!)

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

: )

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

I took the giant path. I felt kind of guilty about that too because I didn't even kill the giant, I just found the door key and ran away from it.

Take the people path and let me know how it goes.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

I've tried both now:

First time the villagers killed me fairly quickly and i almost shotgunned that girls head off.

second time (giant reduxe version) - I shot the boulder down and it trapped the girl over the otherside while i safely (but frustratingly) heard her perish.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh Hari, how I envy all of the fantastic set pieces you have yet to experience. I shall enjoy vicariously reliving RE4 through this thread.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Like the Dads who go to their son's football matches and shout "go on my son, shoot it in the head with the shotgun".

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 18 March 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

I took the villager path, it wasn't too bad.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

In the end i went for the 'giant route' I just ran through his legs and through the doors. Easy peasy but it felt like i was cheating.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I've gone back and am now trying to kill the giant as well for the 15,000 ptas.
Also, there seems to be another rare treasure somewhere in there (I have the treasure map), I don't want to miss that.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

hari, pictures? please?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

if you post pictures, I PROMISE to do the same when I play through, if anyone's interested I guess.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

haha!

i will do this when i get back from Bristol and really get stuck in on Sunday. PROMISE!

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

Though i might have to learn some acrobatics to take good pictures of me playing. But anything is possible.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

OK, I don't think i can kill the giant without grenades or the TMP, but I DID manage to snag the purple gem that completes my elegant mask (the red one was in the villager path) which i sold for 20,000 ptas, w00t.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Saturday, 19 March 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Sniping those dudes on the lift was pretty fun. Completed the Beerstein to sell!

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Saturday, 19 March 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

I think i'm missing a shitload of areas in this game. Each chapter end i've only killed like...10% of the enemy people. Though my style is quite stealthy kill and go - always keep moving.

Just reached the castle and i'm tempted to buy one of these new guns but that would involve trading in one of my old ones and invariably running out of ammo.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 19 March 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

I just started playing this... I've played nearly two hours in and I feel like I should start it over just because I'm unsure if I've been making the most out of it.

Generally at the end of the two (or so) chapters I've played through I've got 80%+ kill rates. But I've only got about four bullets left, and I bought a TMP. But I am sad about that, because I wanted a shotgun. I was all... "hmm, I could get a rifle, but fuck that."

Everybody knows the shotgun is where it's at.

I also realised I've been missing all the treasure. Duh.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 19 March 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

I kicked a mans head off, though. I feel pretty good about that.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 19 March 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

... And later I think I will have to go back and see what happens when I let that chainsaw guy take Leon's head off. I mean, the programmers went to all that trouble...

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 19 March 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm halfway through my second playthough of the maingame, and I've just got A CHICAGO TYPEWRITER! Arrr. It makes a lovely big mess of everything.

Mercenaries mode is HARD. But I like it.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 19 March 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

There will be plenty of opportunities for chainsaw decapitation.

I never got any of the treasure maps, and hence I missed a lot of stuff I think. I rarely got any of the treasures that you're supposed to put other treasures into and sell for lots of $$$$.

I should probably play through this again at some point (and maybe save up for the infinite rocket launcher!).

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 19 March 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Here's a really good Weapon Analysis Guide for people wondering what weapons are really worth buying. It will save you a ton of ptas.

Also, here's the link to that and all the rest of the faqs for the game for quick reference:

Resident Evil 4 FAQs & Guides

I just killed the crazy blind prisoner in 3-1. You don't have to kill him but you get 15,000 ptas if you do. Just have him get his claw stuck in the wall and blast away, you can trick him with the bells.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Saturday, 19 March 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

x-post
The treasure maps are really worth it, you'll make the money back and then some very quickly.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Saturday, 19 March 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

But I am sad about that, because I wanted a shotgun. I was all... "hmm, I could get a rifle, but fuck that." Everybody knows the shotgun is where it's at.

There's a free shotgun in the main village! Also, you need that rifle (w/ the scope). Sniping is one of the most fun things in the whole game. Fuck the TMP. It's only really good for killing giants, but grenades are better for that anyway.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Saturday, 19 March 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I worked that out later! Was so glad I hadn't had enough money to actually buy a shotgun. I felt so hardcore going back and fucking up that whole village, and then grabbing the shotgun.

I've got a rifle now, and I'm seeing why it's so necessary! (entering the castle) I didn't realise it was really any different to the shotgun, before. I sold my TMP, because, yes... fuck that.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Dammit

Digital Camera needs charging. I was just about to take some cool pictures.

*spoiler alert*

I am just about to rescue ashley again and

luis has just been killed. I have a feeling something hard is about to happen so i'm taking a break. I'm getting pretty badass though, i haven't died for about two chapters.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 20 March 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Did you do the first shooting range Hari? I got all 6 bottle caps for a prize of 15,000 ptas.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 March 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha I never got a bottlecap.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 20 March 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Ok, I just got to the first bit with Ada Wong... and being as it's a while since I played a Resi game, and that was only the first one part of the way through - can someone explain who she is, and what all the stuff with Wesker means? Ta.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh damn i got 5 bottle caps but couldn't be bothered to continue. (I did get 100% on both of the ones i did though).

A couple of times i have run out of bullets and had to use the knife on multiple attackers. Pretty scary.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Whoa I've never run out of bullets. As an RE series veteran I know not to fuck around with my ammo supply. Everyone should be using the knife on boxes and crates - never shoot them, and keep in mind that the merchant will refill your ammo when you upgrade capacity on a particular weapon. This is good news when your out of rare stuff like magnum bullets.

Has anyone managed to kill the damn snake-in-the-box BEFORE it strikes you?

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

I never shoot boxes either and i'm fairly sparing with my shots!

I have killed a couple of snakes with a double knife slash. Always play safe with the boxes.

You weren't kidding about those magnum bullets being rare. I've shot 6 bullets in my Magnum firing career. What a waste of money!

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Shit, I forgot I even had a knife to fight with! It was pretty scary for a while there, when I was running around with only one grenade to try and lead the monks in to one area so I could kill them all.

The snakes always make me jump! Fucking snakes.

This games makes me like guns. I can never decide what to buy/not to buy/sell/etc. I had to waste all my magnum bullets because it's all I had left. I was saving them for a special occasion...

The magnum is the most powerful! *reads weapon FAQ* You can get it up to 50 firepower! That's good, I think! Save it for bosses. Kill them good. With style, also. I sent a monk flying across the room with it. That was fun. I'm like Dirty Harry, motherfucker. I haven't found the bullets suuper rare, though...

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

My shotgun is maxed out and I come over all 'Ash' from Evil Dead when i reload and drop, like, 3 monks at a time.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

TIP: only ever use the magnum on bosses, it's kind of next door to the rocket launcher in RE tradition (I haven't used mine yet at all). Not a waste of money in the long run.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

oops duh, suedey just said all that. It's true though.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 March 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

One thing this game has made me love an awful lot is the gamecube controller. I don't even notice half of the stuff i do.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

I read your last post as "I come all over 'Ash' from Evil Dead".

Yeah, the GC controller is the nicest this generation.
I'd rate the controllers
GC
PS2
X-Box (Controller S)

I never owned the original X-Box controller but I understand it was even worse than the S.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

The xbox controller is so ugly and massive. It's like trying to use somebodys face to play a game or something (someone ugly).

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

OMG I just dropped that blind prison dude with two shots from my Magnum. You know you love dat.

I might have to watch Evil Dead now, just so try and do something but not play. I always mean to stop, but the temptation to see what happens is too great! I love my shotgun.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

I just did the first section where you control Ashley, which to my surprise was actually excellent.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

I've been playing in short bursts. I'm only at the sewers with the invisible lizard men things. I'll play some later today maybe.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

I stopped at 5:30 today after about 3 hours went by alarmingly fast. I haven't played since; mainly because everybody is in bed now so i'd have to use headphones and i think the game would scare the soul out of me in headphones.

I think we're at the same point in the game Suedey!

it's addictive isn't it?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

...keep... trying... to... stop...

It's like "Ah, I'll save here. And stop. Ooooh, what's behind this door?" ---- "Oooh, the end of the chapter!"

I generally manage to stop when I get to a merchant because I can't decide what to buy. So I go somewhere else to think about it. I fear I may be able to think of nothing else until this game is completed. Twice.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 20 March 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

I just went ahead and did the Ashley bit after you called it awesome. It was the creepiest bit so far for me. Those giant axe swinging armour things...

So now i'm trying to do the area with the fire breathing dragon statues. I can't wait to put that stupid castle owning guy in his place.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

OK, monks with rocket launchers is not fucking cool. I managed to avoid getting hit, but sheesh!
Them red robe monks be holding some bling. I popped the one leading the ceremony (with my semi-auto rifle, which is sweeeet) in the room when you come back from the sewers and he dropped a pendant worth 12,000 ptas.
This Red 9 really is a great handgun. I've almost got it fully upgraded and I prefer it to the shotgun for taking on small groups of monks (the plentiful handgun ammo doesn't hurt either). Just kneecap the bastards and shoot em while they're down. Headshots can be a risky proposition with those giant parasites about, definitely watch for those red eyes...

I still haven't come close to running out of ammo but this might be because I've killed nearly every enemy in the game I've come across and always pick up the items they drop.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Monday, 21 March 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I hate the snakes. That's why I did start shooting the boxes at some point. Ammo wasn't usually a concern, although I did find myself in the room where you have to fight TWO of the blind Pulp Fiction gimps and a cadre of red monks without shotgun ammo or grenades. That was perhaps my greatest RE4 achievement.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 21 March 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

I used a rocket launcher there. Oh, it was sweet. Also, getting 15000 for each of them, I could buy me another rocket launcher! I haven't yet, though.

I just played a bit which was really scary and intense... and, oh fuck, I only meant to have a quick go! I don't want to play that bit again. Just before you get to the mines. That did actually really scare me, in a good way. Someone please tell me they know which bit I mean. The one with the bad dark invincible motherfucker.

I killed the guy with the chainsaw, too. Please tell me he'll stay dead. There's a reason to own a magnum, right there. It also meant I could explode the parasite sac thingy, and get lots of gems.

I just got a stryker. But y'know... I miss my old shotgun. We were like friends. We went through the best of times, the worst of times. But we did it together! I called him Trevor. You may think "that's no name for a shotgun!", but you'd be wrong. Oh, Trevor.

I've got a blacktail now, as well. I know the Red9 is better, I just thought it looked goofy.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Monday, 21 March 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

Um, turns out buying the Magnum is a waste of money after all, at least if you can hold off on owning one until Chapter 4-1...
There's a free one you can get as soon as you're reunited with Ashley. Just backtrack to that room with the locked door just before the garden maze and have her piggyback up through the window and unlock the door on the other side. Voila, free magnum.
Since I already owned one and had begun upgrading it I sold the free one for 19,000 ptas. I sold the free rocket launcher as well. I could get the XL case now but I'm waiting to see how much that Striker's gonna cost.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Monday, 21 March 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

Woohoo, I just pwned the second shooting range. Prize was 25,000 ptas this time.
One cool thing about the bottlecaps is you find out the names of all the different enemies. For instance, the chainsaw guy is "Dr. Salvador"!

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Monday, 21 March 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

Someone please tell me they know which bit I mean. The one with the bad dark invincible motherfucker.
He's not invincible, freeze him with liquid nitrogen and shoot him with the magnum repeatedly (or just use the rocket launcher for the one hit kill, I did). He drops the crown jewels which make the crown worth 25,000 ptas.

There's a reason to own a magnum, right there. It also meant I could explode the parasite sac thingy, and get lots of gems.
Nah, you can just use the handgun on that. Takes more bullets, sure, but there's a lot of them about....

Prize for 3rd shooting range was 35,000 ptas. The monk dudes are officially called "Zealots". The red one is "Leader zealot". You get a merchant cap and a villager with a parasite coming out of his head, too! Only one shooting range left...

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Monday, 21 March 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

Aww, I missed the free magnum! I missed a bunch of stuff, actually (treasure) but I'm too scared to go back.

I know that guy isn't invincible, but damn if he doesn't scare the hell out of me! Foolishly, I'd frozen him for the third time just near the lift and thought "Ah, my magnum will probably make short work of him." It didn't. It seemed to unfreeze him a lot quicker, though.

I used the handgun for a while on the sac, but I got a bit bored. One magnum shot, however... I had loads of magnum bullets back then! Happy days.

Played this far too late in to the night. Affected dreams.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Monday, 21 March 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

dammit you're all further than me thanks to my extended break

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 21 March 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

My eyes hurt, though. All night while I slept it was, groggily "mmm, do I have more Magnum ammo? Gonna need some..."

I shall have to complete it post-haste else I the fucker shall continue to have it's dastardly hold over me.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Monday, 21 March 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Got to disc 2 (the island) tonight. Lots of soldiers about. Completed the final shooting range for 50,000 ptas.
Salazar at the end of disc one goes down pretty quick if you've been upgrading your magnum and conserving its ammo. Just shoot that red eye thing with the striker until his pod opens up, them let him have it with the magnum.

I've got body armor and a fully upgraded Red 9 now, with the exclusive upgrade it has 5.0 firepower - more than the standard shotgun! I swear I shot one soldier with it and he pirouetted in midair from the force of the blast. That Striker sure is getting sweet from the upgrades, as well.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm at the Salazar battle now. I am doing ok but i've been eaten by it a couple of times. I'm going to go in with a rocket launcher next time and let him have it.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

When it goes to chomp you, quickly jump down to the lower level.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Ha! I used a rocket launcher right away because I was so fed up of the little bastard. Two shots, one magnum in the eye, one rocket launcher in the face. "I'm going to make you suffer!" "No, you're not!"

I love it when they pirouette in midair from the force of the blast! I had to use my magnum on a group of soldiers as it was all I had left...

At the knifey bit now. It's all gone a bit Metal Gear...

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

are the controls better than the old RE games on PS1, I found the fear in them intensified as your character spun around like a twat.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

haha!

can you run and shoot, is what ronan is saying?

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Of course not! But the control is pretty great, if you ask me. Never as fiddly as it was.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

The controls are much better, Ronan. You can press one button and do a quick 180. You are right about the twat-fear factor though.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

There are other scary things that make up for it though, like teenage girls and rain.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Shit

i am at the bit after you jump down the waste disposal and i have to deal with those regenerator things. I keep running out of ammo and ashley is pretty annoying. Game suddenly got a lot harder.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

You have the infrared sight, right?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

wait

what infared sight?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Go back to the freezer!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Dammit, the freezer is the scariest bit so far.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah dude, you need the infrared sight to see the parasites inside the bodies (and on the backs!) of the regenerators, otherwise there's no way (well, I'm sure there's a way, but it probably involves lots of running).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm at a KNIFE FIGHT! Which I actually saw earlier from leaving the game on the title screen... like that the game keeps it tense, rather than falling in to a routine cut scene.

I was scared I'd missed the infrared because of fighting the first couple of regenerators without it.... brrr. Make sure you go and get it, it's very necessary. (And shoot the spiky ones in the knee so you can see the parasite on their back).

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I hated that knifey cute scene.

I could never quite get the back parasite with the sniper rifle, so once I shot them in the knee I would just bust out the shotgun and it took care of it.

There's one regenerator near the very end of the game that scared the HELL out of me.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

i'm quite far away from the freezer but i guess it beats running around pulverising them with shotguns/magnums.

i took out so many of these without this infrared device.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Even the spiky one in the lab? Jesus Hari, you ARE good.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I think that was one of the classic RE4 moments...going in and seeing the regenerator on the closed circuit tv monitor, turning around and shooting the hell out of it, and then it keeps SLITHERING TOWARDS YOU and you're skewered. Freaked me out and my girlfriend refused to watch any more afterwards.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine beat the game like 3 times without the infrared sight. This may be explained by the fact that he doesn't have a job.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

It didn't occur to me that you could turn the infrared OFF until later in the game, which made my normal sniping chores more difficult.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah the Spikey one in the lab was my most intense battle so far. I didn't have the infared so i just ran around shooting it and nearly dying (i didn't even notice the barrel that i could have shot and blown up). Just as i was about to die and run out of ammo i found 5 shotgun bullets.

I loaded up and shot it 5 times and it died. It was pretty epic. Don't even get me started on the second one of those at the bottom of the waste disposal.

I can't believe i've been taking these out the extremely hard way.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Right...

so i was making my way back to get the infrared when i reached the waste disposal bit and it did the cutscene anyway. So going back for the infrared was not an option. So with barely any ammo i took out the first spikey thing. And then the second one was much much harder because i had even less ammo. In the end i got him with a granade i didn't realise i had.

Then i move on to the next area and there are another TWO of those regenerating bastards. So i take out my 6 remaining handgun bullets and pump them into him (no avail). And then i managed to kill the first with the knife.

Now i'm really hurt but i managed to get an extra granade from the room on the right and took out the second one with that, some rifle shots and yes MORE knife action.

Perhaps my greatest Resident Evil feat. I don't know if it'll be topped either!

I'm at the bit with the hanging chamber things and the monster.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

OMG, taking on regenerators with a KNIFE! This is crazier than the pants-pissing thing!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

You could have gone back to an earlier save, but now it's a matter of honor to continue on, isn't it?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Foolishly i just overwrite all of my saves and thus, only have ONE save file...

So really i had no choice. I was fairly sure that my game of resident evil 4 had come to an end.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

POW! I beat you, game.

I hate that extra game now, though. The one with Ada. Got right to the end of it, got fed up... blah.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Hari lives dangerously. I did a new save file every time because I was terrified that I missed something critical.

I started the Ada game right after finishing the main game and said, "No shotgun? Feh!"

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

I know, I know! She really doesn't know what she's doing. I mean, "Hello Ada, not having a shotgun in a game like this... well that's just wack."

I had 20 different files to go back and play through bits, but in the end I decided to live dangerously and just save on one to force myself to make decisions and just BUY the weapons rather than thinking about what would be best to get for hours.

I didn't knife a regenerator, though. That's just crazy.

I am so crap at mercenaries.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

It also appears that I like to think that Leon would trash talk thse villager motherfuckers, and so I do it for him.

I'm a bit worried about myself.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

How far away from the end am i? roughly?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

What chapter are you on? I think the last chapter is 5-4, or maybe the last boss counts as one more chapter after that.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm not reading these posts until I beat it now. I'll report back.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

i'm on 5-1 or 5-2 i think.

5-2 actually.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha.

Go and knife a cow for a bit. And then run past it and see how it feels about you then, as well. THEY REMEMBER.

I had to take the fucker out.

I still can't stop playing this, I went back to one of my old saves because I realised I'd missed a little cut scene, and ended up playing through the village for aaaaages. As in to it as at the very beginning. Just great.

And has anyone SEEN the chainsaw guy on the waterworld-y mercenaries level? Holy jeez.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

Ok I've beaten it.

Hit ratio: 74%
Enemies killed: 983
Number of times killed: 23
Clear time: 23:37'27"

Probably could have shaved off some of those times killed but I got too lazy to reload and replay sometimes, especially on the stupid jetski and knifefight sequences...guess I gotta beat the minigames for the Chicago Typewriter and the Handcannon.
Also, I beat Saddler without using the Special Rocket Launcher, so it'll be worth 30,000 ptas on resale.
I think I tried knifing the first Regenerator exactly once before running off and finding the infared scope after it started pwning me. Coolest video game enemy idea I've seen in quite a while, though.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

This is the only game to come out in the past year besides MGS3: SE that I felt compelled to finish in a timely manner. I still haven't completed GTA: SA, Halo 2, Fable or even Katamari Damacy...

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna give a good go at beating this today when i get back.

I had to leave it on pause for about 2 hours yesterday so i won't get a good time :(

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

My clear time was precisely 18 hours and two minutes. I left it on pause for half an hour, though. Oddly, our hit ratio was exactly the same! Although I'd only killed 800 or so. My times killed way in the 40s! I continued every time, seeing Leon die in many ways is one of the highlights (I still need to see him die from acid burns)! Oh, and I killed Ashley a few times to see what happened. Although I admit, I got battered on the entering the castle section, and the QTE bits... and the jetski!

I was totally compelled to play right through this game... and I'm kind of compelled to play through it again non-stop.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

The jetski sucked ass.

Yeah, I still haven't gotten anyway in Halo 2. I think getting consistently crushed online killed any desire to finish the single player campaign.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

ps. DOOOO IT HARIIIIIII!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Dammit i suck...

Hit Ratio: 67%
Enemies: 782
Times Killed: 45
Clear Time: 19:30

i filled with dread when i saw that last regenerator. But i took him out so swiftly i was proud.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 24 March 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

ok, I am in!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

I tried to take photos cozen but it was just too taxing. I need some kind of partner in crime.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm already back at the castle my second time through. Be sure to select special costumes when you replay, Leon wears his RE2 police uniform and Ashley a white halter top and jeans.
I'm having fun blazing through and pwning fules with my fully upgraded Red 9, Striker, semi-auto rifle and Broken Butterfly magnum. You should see what the magnum with its 50.0 exclusive firepower upgrade does to the El Gigantes, they go down like little bitches.
Already did Assignment Ada as well, but Mercenaries is gonna take a while, sheesh...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

so do I! maybe my little brother can help.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure everyone will beat my original clear time. I left it on pause a lot and also killed every enemy I saw and searched every nook and cranny.

I'll give it up to whoever beats 983 kills the first time through, though. I swear I killed everything except that one giant on the forked path the first time, maybe avoided a couple villagers too.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 24 March 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Dammit i was hoping now i'd done the game i could leave it alone for a while and get on with all the important work i should be doing.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 25 March 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Fat chance, this is video crack.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 25 March 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

I highly recommend muting the game and blaring Death/Black Metal the second time through.

Anyone try professional mode yet?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 25 March 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

I did... I died at the first house.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Friday, 25 March 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

yikes

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 25 March 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I think I could do better, though!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Friday, 25 March 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

I probably won't do it until I've done everything else. Finished mercenaries, fully upgraded the handcannon, bought the Chicago Typewriter and infinite launcher, etc.

Also, there is an interesting speed competition on gameFAQs from some guy called VampireHorde:

To all the RE4 speed runners out there I will make a
chart of all the lowest clear times if you want to submit them to me.
Provide me with a screencap of the CLEAR TIME screen (not the Save
Typewriter screen) and I'll include your name here. Get speeding!

To do a full speed run, you
will need to have unlocked either the Chicago Typewriter and/or the
HandCannon. These weapons will make your speed run hella easier.

This speed run applies for BOTH difficulties. At the end of the FAQ I
will reveal my own stats.

There are three types of players in RE4:
--BEGINNER
--INTERMEDIATE
--ADVANCED

What do these ranks mean? It basically shows where you stand as a
gamer and how fast you can complete Resident Evil 4 for this speed run.
Here's the breakdown and see where you rank:

BEGINNER:
-Has finished RE4 at least once or twice
-Spends time searching through every box for ammo
-Still gets lost through the game
-Has a difficult time with the COMMAND buttons (like DODGE)
-Has died from the first Krauser encounter numerous times
-Has not unlocked any of the other secret weapons

INTERMEDIATE:
-Has beaten ASSIGNMENT ADA
-Has unlocked all secret characters in THE MERCENARIES
-Relies on goodies left over by the enemy
-Evasive and can escape situations with little damage

ADVANCED:
-Has beaten PROFESSIONAL difficulty
-Has unlocked the HandCannon and fully upgraded it
-Can evade enemies with no problems
-Can beat bosses in less than a minute (except Del Lago battle)

The rankings for each category highlight how fast you can do a speed
run. Players in each category can complete a speed run game in the
following times:

-Beginner: 5-10 hours or more
-Intermediate: 3-4 hours
-Advanced: 2 hours or more

Just for your information, there is NO possible way to beat RE4 in
under 2 hours. It's not possible! Anyway, see how you do in the speed
run!

In Professional Mode, here's my
clear time:

HIT RATIO: 29%
ENEMIES KILLED: 515
TIMES KILLED: 0
CLEAR TIME: 2 HOURS 8 MINUTES 8 SECONDS

Not too impressive, is it? But I have proof if anyone wants to see it!

There are a bunch of sequences in the game that take WAY too long (the
Ashley parts mostly). But if you have the patience to get through all
those parts then you'll have a successful speed run. GOOD LUCK!

Speed Guide

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Haha I guess I am a beginner.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 25 March 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
has anyone clocked the entire thing yet?

mercenaries mode is difficult, i can only get 3700 even on the village! it's probably one of the best games i've ever played though. the only thing i didn't like about it was the arcade bits, there was too many towards the end like that stupid knife fight, and the boss battles were a bit too easy. i loved the fight with krauser, taking out his knee caps with my TMP and then popping him in the head with my maxed out butterfly was so much fun. it's a shame capcom didn't utilise the d-pad, it could've been used for changing weapons, i reckon i spent half the game flipping through the inventory.

my proudest moment: killing the second el gigante with just a pistol and my knife, running onto his back when he goes down and slashing the fuck out of the parasite on his back. great times.

guess i should check out resident evil 0 next, anyone got it?

Jordan, no, you must play the new Advance Wars.

advance wars 2 was really hard

I might start again.

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

has anyone played it for the ps2 yet? is it any good?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

I'm playing for PS2 right now, hence my skipping through this thread without reading it. It's fun but seems way too easy, and I'm not even an "experienced gamer."

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

is it actually still scary like the original games, from screenshots it just looks like a fast paced shootem up to me.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

There's that whole extra Ada Wong chapter in the PS2 version! With ANSWERS to QUESTIONS! But I don't want to have to buy it again and replay it all, just to find them out. Bah.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

x-post

It's faster paced and more streamlined than the originals, but the changes totally work still feels like Resident Evil. And yes, it's still quite scary and atmospheric!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

that should read "the changes totally work and still feel like Resident Evil." anyway, bottom line: its a rad game!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

But is it fun easy or boring easy, Nick?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

okay i just ordered this. !

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I almost want to play it through on PS2 just for the new content. I can't imagine the controls would be as comfortable though.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

It's pretty fun, but I was expecting something more...innovative based on the hype. It seems pretty standard to me. And the cut-scenes have the worst dialogue ever.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

i've been playing this all day, one the most enjoyable games I think I've ever played. It does all seem strangely easy though.

Beautiful to look at, and there have been some great 'zombie' moments. Such as the part in the main village where you can hold up in the house by pushing furniture against the doors and windows.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 20 November 2005 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

The gamecube version is anything but easy. Especially 'mercenaries'. christ!

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Sunday, 20 November 2005 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

I just think it's a bit generous with the ammo and health pick ups.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 20 November 2005 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

There's that whole extra Ada Wong chapter in the PS2 version! With ANSWERS to QUESTIONS!

How does this differ from the Ada Wong chapter in the Gamecube version?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 20 November 2005 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if the PS2 version has been lightened up a little.

As for the extras:

The content of the GameCube version is all intact here, but in addition to that, some key extras have been added. Chiefly among them is a side story called Separate Ways, which lets you play as the elegant, enigmatic spy Ada Wong as she finds herself in the same place at the same time as Leon, the hero of the story. In addition to featuring some slick new cutscenes and more than a few more hours of great gameplay, Separate Ways sheds new light onto some aspects of the storyline and explains why some of the things that happen to Leon are more than just happy coincidences. The difficulty in Separate Ways picks up at about where Resident Evil 4 leaves off, so Ada will have a tough fight ahead of her and will likely need to avoid as many enemies as she has to kill. As such, the feel of the action in this episode is different from the parts of Resident Evil 4 during which it takes place, even though Ada plays pretty much the same as Leon (though she's a little faster and gets to use a cool grapple gun). Overall, Separate Ways is a well produced and exciting bonus.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 20 November 2005 04:27 (nineteen years ago)

That does sound like someone never played the Ada bonus on Gamecube (though maybe now it's available from the start instead of after you've played through it)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 20 November 2005 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

well it says (in the ps2 manual), there are 5 extra missions available exclusive to the playstation version when you finish the game.

took a rest from it yesterday and watched my mate play it instead, laughing at his struggle against the mad monks in the castle. Seriously good game.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 21 November 2005 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

and i found out only last night that you can combine the treasure items to form more expensive pieces. Unlucky seeing as I've pretty much sold most of it already in bits. I may start this game again.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 21 November 2005 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

That does sound like someone never played the Ada bonus on Gamecube

From IGN:

Beyond the technical feats, Ada's new Separate Ways mission is a real treat for gamers. Only after dedicating some serious time to the main mission and beating it will you unlock it, but once you do you open the way to learn more about the story than any GameCube RE4 player could have. Furthermore, there's even a custom-made new area that Capcom created just for RE4, making the mission more than just a simple sidequest through the same areas. The execution and presentation of this mission is quite detailed. As Ada, you'll have access to a more advanced stash of moves (like a grappling hook) and weapons, and you'll even have objectives that take place in the same time and space as Leon's. In the opening chapter, for example, you'll actually hear the chainsaw man chasing him down in the distance, and you'll find out exactly why those villagers clear town after the church bell rings. Interested? We thought so. It's a fine addition and reward for dedicated players.

I played the GC Ada levels. I didn't get a grappling hook. I didn't find out about the bell. And I don't think IGN are likely to have just made up things about "a custom-made new area".

I was nostalgic about this game a week after I beat it. I helped myself fall asleep for a few weeks there by trying to remember the game from start to finish. (This is an excellent subsitute for counting sheep and similar practices)

one year passes...

Anyone played the Wii version?

The Wii is my first console since the PS1, and it's the first time I've played RE4, so I am pretty much blown away completely. I'm only about 4 hours in. I finally found a Wii the day before my graduate school program started, so I've had very little time to play videogames, but when I get a chance to spend 1/2 hour on RE4, it's the best reward imaginable.

I'm jealous that your first gaming experience in awhile is (seemingly) RE4.
