You can get Zombie in NA. I rented it in Montreal a few years back. Very great movie, indeed Tuomas. LA Without a Map was shite, though. I just picked up both Aki Kaurismäki box sets here in Sweden (why is Sweden putting these things out? Says something about the state of the Finnish film industry I think) and they're very nice indeed.

And the largest output of Finnish film was in the 50s (this according to research my girlfriend did for her dissertation on the representation of Helsinki in post-War Finnish films). And non-Kaurismäki films are not all bad. I quite liked the recent biopic of Badding, for example.

Ruinously lame. Almost as bad as Chow's habit of repeating every good gag at least three times immediately afterward. (Best iteration of this habit: the knife gag, which culminated with the throwing of the handle into the landlady's face but ended up overplaying its hand with the fucking snakes.)

Well, the girl too. Neither quite as bad as the gay brother's bitch boyfriend, though. I didn't actually come down on the side of disliking 5x2, but can't really for the life of me buy anything that happened on screen. I guess it succeeds in the obvious comparison to, oh let's just say Closer because of how it eroticizes the betrayal to an almost abstract degree... plus it "ends" where it "starts," which is portracted and all but still satisfying.

I am probably going to ditch McDull tomorrow night (read: Monday) in favor of Wim Wenders at Riverview, which might be all I have the stamina for tomorrow, given the two morning shifts (read: 4:30 in the morning) on either side of the evening.

I have a STEEL MIND and STEEL BALLS when it comes to slow-moving films. How does it compare to his other films in this respect? I saw Ossos a while back.

I'm also going for Opera Jawa and The Yacoubian Building - anyone seen these? Can't be bothered with the new Hal Hartley or Michael Glawogger or Guy Maddin. What about Bamako? That sounds interesting.

I haven't seen any other Costas, so I can't compare them, but Colossal Youth isn't just slow-moving, it doesn't really move forward at all if you're talking strictly about narrative.

I assume the Maddin they're screening is Brand Upon the Brain!. It's really worth seeing if they're doing live foley/score/voiceover. Otherwise, have no regrets about skipping it.

That is good to hear about Colossal Youth, I'm so darn tired of conventional narrative at this juncture. Also I'm going to Lisbon next month (although I gather it's not a part of Lisbon a tourist would wander into).

I know a lot of people on ILX like Guy Maddin, but I'm not really a fan. It is Brand Upon The Brain!.

It's stylistically very similar to Cowards Bend the Knee, but then I've pretty much loved everything he's done since The Heart of the World.
